WWW.DIGITALTRENDS.COMCheck out this great movie before it leaves Amazon Prime Video next week (April 2025)Table of Contents Table of Contents It’s a great introduction to its star and director It’s delicate without ever feeling slow The movie ends at exactly the right moment If you’ve ever found yourself browsing through Amazon and wondering which titles you should be prioritizing, you’re not alone. Even if you know that there are 15 things you want to watch, deciding which one to check out first can be a major challenge. One way to prioritize all of those movies, though, is to determine which ones will become unavailable soon. Past LivesAmazon Prime at the end of April, and it’s worth taking the time to check it out if you haven’t already. The movie follows two Korean children who, over the course of decades, grow apart in spite of having a close bond when they were kids. When they reunite in New York, they begin to reckon with all the ways their lives have pulled them apart. Here are three reasons you should watch it: Recommended Videos A24 Past Lives was written and directed by Celine Song, and the movie is remarkably assured given that it’s a first-time feature. Song is someone who will hopefully have a long career ahead of her, and few debuts have been more promising in recent years than this one is. Related The same is true of Greta Lee, the film’s star, who is not a fresh face, exactly, but got an opportunity here to show what she’s capable of. As Nora, Lee is heartbreaking and fully realized, a woman who understands that life is full of choices and that each choice forecloses another path. A24 Past Lives was a breakout hit at Sundance, and with good reason. The film definitely feels like an indie, but it’s absent many of the things that can make Sundance movies feel pretentious or dull. This is a movie that zooms through its story, following characters across decades and through a number of intimate, revealing conversations. It’s a movie that you want to crawl inside of and live in, filled with carefully cultivated atmosphere. The movie’s second half, which is set almost entirely in New York, feels like the rare movie that loves the modern iteration of the city. A24 Another thing that those annoying indie Sundance movies almost always struggle to do is end at the right time. Past Lives doesn’t have that problem in the slightest. The movie ends at a moment of utter devastation, but one that also feels like the perfect culmination of the story it’s been telling the whole time. We understand that these two people have deep feelings for one another, but also that they’re not meant to be together, as tragic as that might be. Stream Past Lives on Prime Video. WWW.BUSINESSINSIDER.COMShe'd dreamed of retiring in Malaysia for years. At 58, she packed up her life in New Zealand and went for it.Jill Tozer retired and moved to Penang, Malaysia, alone a decade ago. CrystalFoto/Getty Images/iStockphoto 2025-04-21T00:37:01Z Save Saved Read in app This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now. Have an account? Jill Tozer, 68, left New Zealand to retire in Malaysia a decade ago. She now lives in a $450-a-month apartment with sea views in Penang. She says she loves the warm climate, the lower cost of living, and the welcoming local community. Ten years ago, Jill Tozer packed her bags, said goodbye to her daughters, and moved alone to Penang, a state in the northwestern part of Malaysia.A former physiotherapist, Tozer was born and raised in New Zealand. She had been living in Christchurch for years,In 2011, an earthquake reduced much of the city of Christchurch to rubble. Tozer's business was also affected."I was at a crossroads in jobs since the earthquakes had kind of finished what I was trying to set up at the time," Tozer, now 68, told Business Insider."I crunched the numbers and thought, am I better off staying in New Zealand and paying ridiculous amounts for rent, unable to get a well-paying job, or coming to Malaysia and living off investment income? I figured I possibly would be better off here," she said. Jill Tozer said goodbye to her two daughters and moved from New Zealand to Malaysia alone. Jill Tozer. The idea of retiring in Malaysia had been on her mind for years.Tozer had been there before to visit her friends, and she longed to return every time she came back from her trips."I would be back in New Zealand thinking, 'Oh, Heather and John are still sitting on their porch, having a sundown every night of the year. And I'm inside, huddled beside the fire, freezing," Tozer said. "And so I thought, yeah, I'd like to give it a go."A breezy apartment with a sea viewTozer had moved abroad once before — to Canada — when she was in her 20s.Even so, it was intimidating to do it again. This time, it also meant leaving her two adult daughters behind. She left her two adult daughters behind and made the move alone. Jill Tozer. "But my older daughter said, 'Mom, just go for three months, and if you don't like it, come home and look at it as if you had a good three-month holiday.' And I thought that's a jolly good way of looking at it. So that's what I did," Tozer said."But 10 years later, I'm still here," she added. The apartment-hunting process was smooth. Within a week of arriving in Malaysia, Tozer found an apartment that fit all her requirements."I found an agent, and she spent two days just taking me around. I gave her some parameters. I wanted a sea view. I wanted a pool and a big enough area to do yoga," Tozer said. It took her less than a week to find her apartment — where she still lives, a decade later. Jill Tozer. After viewing about eight different units, she decided on a three-bedroom apartment in Tanjung Tokong, a neighborhood near Penang's capital city, George Town. It's 1,200 square feet, with a small balcony and two extra bedrooms for her daughters or friends to stay in when they visit. Rent is 2,000 Malaysian Ringgit, or about $450, a month. She got the sea view she wanted, and the nearest grocery store is five minutes away. A slower life, but with 'plenty' to doTozer is on the Malaysia My Second Home, or MM2H, visa, which was introduced in 2002 to attract foreigners who want to retire and live in the country. There were 58,468 active MM2H pass holders in the country as of December, Malaysia's minister of tourism, arts, and culture, Tiong King Sing, said in a parliamentary response on February 24. It's a three-bedroom apartment with plenty of space for her to practice yoga. Jill Tozer. For Tozer, one of the biggest perks of living in Malaysia has been the climate."The main reason I'm here is for the weather. I love never being cold," Tozer said. "I love being able to leave my doors and windows open day and night. I love being able to go swimming anytime I want."She also says the community has been inclusive and welcoming."In New Zealand, as in many Western countries, older people are kind of almost invisible, but here you get more respect. People are actually nice to you, notice you, and want to help you," Tozer said. The apartment even comes with sea views, exactly what she wanted. Jill Tozer. The lower cost of living helps, Tozer said. Her monthly living expenses, including bills and food, are often less than 4,000 Malaysian ringgit. This doesn't include extras, like travel expenses if she decides to take a trip somewhere."Food for me is very cheap. I don't eat meat, dairy, cheese, or anything like that that's imported and expensive," Tozer said, adding that she eats out three or four times a week. The lower cost of living means she can afford to eat out more often. Jill Tozer. Her life here is also much slower than it used to be, partially because she is fully retired. However, she says there are "plenty" of things to do that keep her busy."Yoga, swimming. Play Mahjong. Play Bridge. There's so much to do," she said. "It's just so nice to be able to meet up with people without having to worry about, 'Oh my God, how much is this going to cost?'"Even though she didn't know anyone in Penang when she first arrived, it wasn't hard to find her community. She joined expat Facebook groups and began attending meetups hosted by fellow members. She's still friends with some of the people she met at her very first event.Deciding what's nextWhile the MM2H has made Malaysia an attractive place for expats, the most recent rule changes, announced in 2024, included stricter financial requirements. There are now three different categories of the visa. Depending on the category of visa they apply for, applicants are required to have fixed deposits of between $150,000 and $1 million and also buy property in Malaysia.Tozer isn't due to renew her visa for a few more years, but says that will be when she starts thinking about whether she wants to return to New Zealand. Tozer says moving abroad alone is "not as scary" as one might think. In this photo, she is pictured with one of her daughters and her son-in-law. Jill Tozer. "I'm not sure at this point. Eventually, I might need my kids around closer. It just depends on what happens," Tozer said. She said her time in Malaysia has been fulfilling, and moving to a new country alone is not as scary as one might think."One of the reasons I came here, particularly to Malaysia, is because it's safe. For a single woman, that's quite a big consideration," Tozer said. "There are lots of places I wouldn't move to on my own, but Malaysia, no problem."Do you have a story to share about relocating to a new city? Contact this reporter at agoh@businessinsider.com. METRO.CO.UKGames Inbox: Will GTA 6 be on Nintendo Switch 2?Surely this is impossible on the Switch 2? The Monday letters page looks forward to Star Wars Zero Company, as one reader explains why they’ve cancelled their Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.uk The grail I’m seeing rumours about Assassin’s Creed Shadows coming to Nintendo Switch 2 and I wouldn’t be surprised. Or at least I wouldn’t be surprised that Ubisoft is trying but I would be shocked if it looked anywhere near as good, because Shadows is lowkey one of the best-looking games of recent years.Cyberpunk 2077 is no slouch either and we’ve already had hands-on reports for that. My question is just how far can it go? What’s the most graphically impressive game the Switch 2 could manage? If it’s as powerful as a PlayStation 4 does that mean we could get a game that looks as good as Horizon Forbidden West or God Of War Ragnarök – both of which are cross-gen? If that’s possible then what about the holy grail of GTA 6? I know the trailer looked impossible even on a PlayStation 5 but as people are keen to point out, Rockstar and Nintendo do get on pretty well and I’m sure that when the game started development it was aiming for the PlayStation 4 – so perhaps there’s a way to get it working on Switch 2 using those early experiments.Lemmy Worldwide problem I’m sure Americans are happy the Switch 2 isn’t getting a price increase but why do I get the feeling that the money Nintendo is losing on that is going to be passed onto the rest of the fans around the world. There’s no reason we should suffer but I bet we do.After all this wait, it’s very unfortunate timing for Nintendo and I do feel sorry for them to a degree. Their refusal to announce a lot of the UK prices is very suspicious though and I fear that whatever thy were going to be they’re now going to get a price hike. Likewise. those games that have no price anywhere, like Hyrule Warriors, I worry are going to be more than was originally intended.Terry Gold Old problem I don’t know what to think of that Star Wars Outlaws trailer for the Switch 2. It definitely doesn’t look as good as the PlayStation 5 version, but it still looks okay, about as good as you’d expect I suppose? There’s not really anything to compare it to at the moment, so it’s hard to know whether to be disappointed or impressed. I think probably I’m just neutral about it though. The obvious problem is what are Ubisoft going to charge for it? The PlayStation 5 version is officially £70 but it’s been on cheap almost since it came out. If Ubisoft were sensible they’d make it so it’s only £50 or so but I can’t see that. So who wants an inferior version of a year old game that costs more? It’s the same old problem of any third party game on a Nintendo console.Focus Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.uk Andor: The Video Game I share GC’s enthusiasm for Star Wars Zero Company and I’m a lot more interested now that it seems like it will have permadeath and some sort of meta strategy element, which they didn’t make clear in the trailer.I’m not sure even Star Wars can help make these games a hit but I’m glad they’re at least trying, because I love XCOM and almost anything else similar to it. I’m not sure I really get the Clone Wars setting though, as that seems a bit limiting, given how little danger battle droids are in small numbers. I would’ve thought that the getting a crew together for covert ops thing would’ve been better for something set closer to the original trilogy too – especially if it leaned into the style of Andor. Not that I’m going to complain though, any big budget new turn-based strategy is good by me.Costa Budget birthday I know the Inbox likes to celebrate non-significant anniversaries, so I’d just thought I’d point out that Fire Emblem was 35 on Sunday. I’m sure none of us played it back then, because it was Japanese-only for a long time, but it’s a neat bit of trivia. The obvious question is how long will it be before a new game is announced for the Switch 2? Not long, I imagine, but I’m curious to see what it is. Three Houses did unexpectedly well but it was very low budget, then Nintendo followed that up with Engage… which looked even cheaper. I get that turn-based games don’t usually get a lot of money spent on them, but I’d like to see at least one attempt with Fire Emblem. It was always one of the best looking 3DS games.Onibee Combat re-evolved There’s always a lot of talk about when Halo will eventually turn up on PlayStation or Switch but what I don’t hear is what is Microsoft actually going to do with the franchise now? It’s only four years since Halo Infinite but it feels like forever, with that game being such a failure I’m almost surprised they didn’t just give up on the series.Although I guess they have essentially, as there doesn’t seem any hope of anything new coming out anytime soon and even when it does the rumours say the first game is going to be another remake. I imagine that’s going to be the first one to go multiformat because, let’s face it, PlayStation and Switch owners are not going to be impressed by Halo Infinite. The problem is that any new game is going to bring with it so much baggage that the only sensible option is a full reboot, but do Microsoft have the guts for that? I’ve played almost all the Halo games, and I didn’t have a clue what was going on in Infinite and I’m sure that didn’t help its sales. They need to make the remake the new Halo 1 and carry on from there. If it was possible they should’ve got Bungie to do it, but now Sony own them. It’d be some irony if they sold them back to Microsoft though, given how badly things have worked out for them at PlayStation. Bungie is one of the best known developers in the world and yet they’ve been owned and bought so many times you’d think they were some useless indie developer.Bluto Proper upset We’ve seen a lot of back and forth on the Switch 2 over the last few weeks, for obvious reasons. but for me the biggest disappointment was finding out that The Duskbloods was multiplayer only. That instantly means I have no interest in it and it means two multiplayer games in a row from FromSoftware. When are we going to learn what their next proper game is? I know they don’t see it like that, but I am desperate for a new single-player game from them and at this rate I’m not going to get one for at least two or three years.Tacle Fool me once Switch 2 is exactly what I wanted, but I’m going to cancel my pre-order.The Switch is hands down my favourite console. I have loved Nintendo games since The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time on the N64. After playing text-based adventure games like The Hobbit on the Spectrum, I dreamed of a game like Ocarina Of Time, where you could see your character traverse the landscape and fight in 3D. Minus the Wii U, I have owned every Nintendo console since. The functionality of the Switch was, literally, a game-changer for me. Being able to take my favourite games on holiday or instantly swapping to handheld mode when the wife wanted to watch EastEnders was a blessing I didn’t know I needed. Ever since rumours of the Switch 2 first started circulating several years ago, I prayed they would keep the same form, just more powerful and maybe with a new Nintendo style gimmick thrown in for good measure. Now it’s been announced, I find myself seriously underwhelmed. I won’t use the camera and the chat, and mouse options didn’t really grab me either. I love Nintendo for their unique first party offerings, but their launch games have left me disappointed. Given the time since the previous one I was expecting a new 3D Mario at least announced, even if not releasing day one. I also had, I don’t think unreasonable, expectations for a new Animal Crossing. For me Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza are not system sellers. With Metroid Prime 4 I’m concerned we will have a long period of cross-generational releases, especially with the huge userbase of the original Switch. I had my fingers burnt with PlayStation 5, which I also got day one and still haven’t used for anything I couldn’t have done on my PlayStation 4. My fault entirely for getting caught up in the hype, but I don’t want to repeat the same mistake again. Until we get more exciting first party games, Switch 2 exclusive releases announced I’m happy to stick with my original.AjH (reader since the days of Teletext) GC: So far, Metroid Prime 4 is the only first party game confirmed to be cross-generational, no doubt because work on it began long before the Switch 2 was announced. Mario Kart 8 is Nintendo’s best-selling game ever, so to suggest World isn’t a system seller is a bit odd. Inbox also-rans How much does the new Nintendo Switch cost?PaulaGC: It’s £395.99 or £429.99 with a digital copy of Mario Kart World. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any game leaked as much as Oblivion. I really hope it gets announced this week because I am absolutely sick of hearing about it.Nibblet More Trending Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.uk The small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend. GIZMODO.COMBring Her Back Summons a Creepy New CommercialToday’s Easter, the day when Jesus resurrected from the dead. You know who else rose from the dead? Potentially someone in Bring Her Back. To celebrate the holiday, A24’s put out a promo for the upcoming horror movie which teases the rise of…something. It appears to involve a young orphan named Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips). As the movie opens, he’s recently been adopted into a family whose mother Laura (Sally Hawkins) just thinks the world of him. Yeah, he’s eating dead bees and staring out the window, but he’s just adjusting to his new living situation! Unfortunately, it begins to dawn on her other two adopted children (Billy Barratt and Sara Wong) that something’s not right with Oliver. And whatever it is, Laura had something to do with it, which may end up endangering them all. Bring Her Back comes from brother duo Danny and Michael Philippou, who helmed 2023’s breakout hit Talk to Me. A lot of people thought that was the scariest movie of the summer, and this looks as disturbing, if not more. The vibes here are not great, punctuated by Laura looking at Oliver and wondering aloud if she even did her ritual correctly. If that sounds like your cup of tea, the Philippou brothers are ready to meet that demand when Bring Her Back hits theaters on May 30. Want more io9 news? COGIMAGI.MEDIUM.COMExtracting a Summary of Industry Applications from One Week of arXiv AI PapersExtracting a Summary of Industry Applications from One Week of arXiv AI Papers9 min read·Just now--Capstone — Gen AI Intensive Course 2025Q1https://www.kaggle.com/code/helgaguerreiro/capstone-gen-ai-2025q1-1-week-arxiv-summaryGoalThis project aimed to build a practical method to get a clear overview of what AI researchers are working on, segmented by real-world industry applications.Take one week of AI papers from arXiv, classify them by Industry, and then summarize how those papers contribute to the Industry.Problem statementGetting a bird’s eye view of research in AI as a hobbyist or curious external observer is surprisingly complex. The field is drowning in hyperbole and fad trends.Communication channels are often polarized by generalist clickbait headlines and super dense academic or Industry channels specializing in specific sub-fields.The arXiv dataset, which Cornell University graciously makes available, contains more than 1 million articles from arXiv. The sheer number of AI papers is overwhelming, and the trend is that it will continue to increase over time. For this illustration, we use the first version of the date on the arXiv dataset. Each bar represents the number of papers created in 1 week. The large number of submissions makes it hard to analyze without automation of some kind.Every summary is a projection of some kind. You want to take something larger and represent it in a smaller size while retaining its general information.A good metaphor is thinking of shadows on a wall. Presume you have this dispersed set of objects, and you want to be able to tell what they are just by seeing their shadows. We think of the papers as objects whose key shapes and features we need to recognize clearly. The model and prompt are like a bright, precisely positioned light that we shine on these objects. By first organizing objects into clearly defined groups, we ensure each group’s shadows remain a good representation of the group. Then, within each group, we auto-cluster similar objects to ensure similar objects are reflected together; this helps preserve their shape in the reflection, adding definition to the diversity of shapes within the group.Methodology (Data, Classification, Embeddings, Clustering, Summarization)DataWe start with a JSON list of [ arxiv_id, title, abstract, v1_date ] from 23–03–2025 to 29–03–2025, extracted from the arXiv dataset.ClassificationFirst, we want to determine which industries are mentioned in a paper. Each paper will be assigned an industry list attribute, which can be:N/A — no industry mentionedOther — not part of our listList of industriesGiven the number of papers involved and my goal of running this pipeline regularly for personal use, cost is an important factor.Using a pro model would undoubtedly produce better results, but it would also be significantly more expensive. For that reason, I prioritized integrating flash models as much as possible throughout the pipeline. To better optimize the balance between quality and cost, it was important to understand the limitations of flash models and design acceptable trade-offs that still produce meaningful results.GroundingIn preliminary tests, simply asking the model to identify industries or industrial methods often produced hilarious — and unusable — results. For example:Paper 2402.09573 — “Changes by Butterflies: Farsighted Forecasting with Group Reservoir Transformer” — was assigned the industry “Butterflies.”This kind of noise was frequent and made the Industry lists unmanageable.I grounded the model by providing a manually curated list of generic industries to circumvent this. It’s worth noting that the list of industries is arbitrary.Any attempt at rigid classification is subject to inherent limitations because industry applications often overlap and defy strict categorization.(For instance, should satellites fall under telecommunications, or are they also tools of environmental science?)However, because the industry list is stored externally in a configuration file, it can easily be adjusted or expanded later if needed.Example prompt excerpt for clarityYou are a research assistant tasked with identifying the relevant industries for a given academic paper.Below are predefined industries you must choose from:Industry: HealthcareKeywords: doctor, hospital, medical, imaging, diagnosis, clinicalExamples: Detecting tumors from MRI scans.Industry: Finance & BankingKeywords: finance, banking, fraud, credit, insurance, investment, stockExamples: Predicting credit default risk using machine learning.[…. Other industries]Do this step by step. You will be given a title and abstract of a paper.First, carefully read the abstract to find any clear mentions of industries or application domains.Only then skim the title if needed to supplement missing context.Map the findings to one or more industries from the list above. If no category is a good fit, assign the Industry:OtherSummarize this paper based on its contributions / impact into the identified industries Finally, estimate “Relevance Score”, On a scale from 0 (not related) to 100 (highly related), how strongly is this paper connected to the [Industry] industry based on its topic and content? Provide only the numeric score.A weak match should have a Relevance Score of 50 or less.A strong match should have a Relevance Score of 80 or more.Do not infer other sectors not mentioned.Do not guess possible applications.Ignore general technologies like “Machine Learning” or “Artificial Intelligence” unless the Industry itself is the tech industry (e.g., software engineering, chip design).Title: [the title]Abstract: [the abstract]Return your answer as JSONExpose your reasoningExample response format paper matches category x because y category alfa because beta“`json[{“industry”: “Healthcare”, “relevanceScore”:80, “summary”: “relevant because it improves or impacts gama”}{“industry”: “Legal & Compliance”, “summary”: “relevant because it improves or impacts teta”, “relevanceScore”:20]` “Task Diversity in Small ModelsWe initially attempted to have the flash model detect whether a paper was industry-related and, if so, classify it into relevant industries. This approach consistently failed: even with the temperature set as low as 0.2 and explicit step-by-step instructions, the model frequently hallucinated potential applications instead of restricting itself to explicit mentions. To address this, we split the task into two stages:Stage 1: Determine if the paper explicitly mentions any industry or application domain.Stage 2: If so, classify it into the appropriate industry categories. This adjustment significantly improved performance, allowing us to rely predominantly on flash models for industry classification while preserving acceptable quality levels.Semantic limitations in small modelsSmall models, like flash models, struggle when instructions require non-trivial reasoning. The further the required judgment drifts from “explicitly stated” information, the more unreliable the model becomes.A common failure mode was loose mentions of industry or technology domains being over-interpreted as strong industrial relevance. To mitigate this, we implemented two heuristic checks:Multiple Categories: We flagged the result as suspicious if more than two industries are assigned to a paper. (While cross-industry methods exist, hallucination was more common.)Assignment of “Other” Plus Specific Categories: Assigning “Other” alongside one or more concrete industries often indicates model confusion. When these conditions were met, the classification was re-run using a Pro model, and the corrected results were stored.Example of semantic limitationsThis example highlights how the small model inferred potential applications as Industry matches, while the pro model correctly distinguished between potential use and explicit industry relevance.Paper 2503.19267 — NeoRL-2: Near Real-World Benchmarks for Offline Reinforcement Learning with Extended Realistic ScenariosThe flash model returned:Transportation & Logistics — ‘The paper introduces a new benchmark, NeoRL-2, for offline reinforcement learning that addresses challenges encountered in real-world applications, including those involving deployed control systems and delayed action effects, which are relevant to optimizing transportation and logistics operations like fleet management and delivery routes.Manufacturing — paper introduces a new benchmark, NeoRL-2, for offline reinforcement learning that addresses challenges encountered in real-world applications, including those involving deployed control systems and delayed action effects, which are relevant to optimizing manufacturing processes and supply chain managementEnergy & Utilities — paper introduces a new benchmark, NeoRL-2, for offline reinforcement learning that addresses challenges encountered in real-world applications, including those involving deployed control systems and delayed action effects, which are relevant to optimizing energy distribution in smart grids.Aerospace & Defense — The paper introduces a new benchmark, NeoRL-2, for offline reinforcement learning that addresses challenges encountered in real-world applications, including those involving deployed control systems and delayed action effects, which are relevant to optimizing Aerospace & Defense applications.’}]🤓 Pro model returned 🏆Other — This paper introduces NeoRL-2, a benchmark for offline reinforcement learning algorithms, focusing on general real-world challenges like conservative data and delayed actions, rather than specific industry applications. Its contribution is methodological, aiming to improve RL algorithms for potential use across various unspecified domains.Classification NumbersPapers: 1905Identified as Industry related: 968 (50.8%)Suspicious Classifications Identified: 201 (20.7% of industry-related papers)Given the relatively low rate of suspicious classifications, relying primarily on the flash model with selective fallback to a pro model remains more cost-effective than using the pro model for all classifications.EmbeddingsEmbeddings transform raw data — like text — into compact semantic vectors, making it possible to measure relationships and patterns. However, embeddings are projections: they capture some aspects of the original data while discarding others. The inherent loss of information in the process makes the chosen embedding algorithm critical — poor embedding risks losing the very properties we need for downstream tasks like clustering or semantic comparison. The quality of what we can infer later depends heavily on what we choose to preserve now.For embedding, we use a modern semantic model (text-embedding-004) to better preserve meaningful relationships in textClusteringMost clustering algorithms work on one of two principles: frequency analysis or semantic proximity. Abstracts are relatively small bodies of text; therefore, frequency analysis will be inferior because any variation will disproportionally distance papers that could be close. For this reason, we choose a semantic algorithm that can handle noise and variable density like HDBSCAN.The final problem to solve is large clusters. Even with segmentation by Industry, some clusters will be over 100 papers, ex: “medical imaging”.If you feed an LLM 100 abstracts, you’re guaranteed to collapse information into distortion. To minimize this, we first instruct the model to summarize the industry applications of a smaller cluster of papers and then run the group of summaries again for a broader summary. We understand this process can exacerbate bias present in the individual groups. Is it a poorer choice than letting the model choose what information to preserve from a more extensive collection of abstracts?SummarizationThe goal is to create 1 section per Industry. Each section contains multiple clusters and one “General Outlook” summary representing the papers that did not fit any clusters. We also ask the model to assign a representative title for each cluster. For the papers that didn’t match a cluster, we only summarize those to which the model assigned a relevance score > 90, which helps ensure that only very strong matches to the Industry are included. Results and FindingsThe compilation of summaries feels repetitive and is not proper for direct publication, but it could be a good base for human review.Future Improvements, Reflections and LimitationsInefficiencies — Duplicate records in the embeddings.Since a single paper can be assigned to multiple industries, and ChromaDB lacks the ability to filter individual values within a list stored in metadata, we chose to encode the record ID as <arXiv_id>__< Industry>.This approach enables per-industry filtering but results in duplicate embeddings for papers associated with multiple industries.Poor evaluation mechanisms. Most evaluation steps in this pipeline are manual. While intermediate outputs are saved for inspection, verifying their quality currently requires human review. There is no automated mechanism to quantify output quality. Future work could focus on developing evaluation metrics by Industry to fine-tune industry keywords and examples, improving classification accuracy.Information lossRelying solely on abstracts is a limitation, as industry applications are often better described in the introduction sections of papers.Future improvements could involve lightweight NLP techniques to extract high-relevance semantic excerpts from the first page, increasing coverage without dramatically raising token usage.Clustering OptimizationCurrent clustering relies on a single embedding model and algorithm.Future iterations could experiment with alternative embedding models and clustering algorithms to assess their impact on the quality and interpretability of the thematic groupings.ConclusionThis is a prototype; it contains many weaknesses that can be improved. The goal was to outline a structure that could be improved modularly. The basic outline of its components:A seed semantic structure to ground the model when classifying the papers into buckets — the industry listA structured outline that can be ingested into a document to be reviewed by a human and turned into a newsletter or executive summary — the section list outputOne way to further filter and sort large buckets is the relevance score, which we recognize is an arbitrary and unreliable metric as the flash model in this pipeline primarily assigns it.An automated clustering mechanism for the buckets to further subdivide large semantically similar groups.0 Σχόλια 0 Μοιράστηκε 52 Views
