    Phantom Blade Zero Takes Inspiration from Souls Games For Exploration and Resident Evil for Vibes – Director
    While the studio behind Phantom Blade Zero has been clear about designing the upcoming RPG as being closer in gameplay terms to a title like Devil May Cry 5 than it would be to Dark Souls, the studio has mentioned that is taking inspiration from several games, including FromSoftware’s Souls franchise. Speaking to GamesRadar, developer S-Game spoke about how Phantom Blade Zero‘s various aspects have been inspired by Devil May Cry, Souls, and even Resident Evil. Where Devil May Cry was the inspiration behind combat, the Souls franchise is where the studio is taking its cues from for level design. Resident Evil, on the other hand, will serve as the inspiration for the game’s narrative design and general atmosphere. “On the Souls-lite level design side, we are definitely a fan of and inspired by the pre-Elden Ring, interconnected, tight level design,” said a representative from S-Game. They also mentioned that director “Soulframe” Liang studied architecture at school, “so the level design is something that’s very important for us and we want to have very robust levels, have a lot of depth to them, very dense.” Liang himself spoke about how the various inspirations for Phantom Blade Zero came together in different ways. Taking to GamesRadar, he describes the title as being more like a Resident Evil game with an emphasis on fighting with swords. “Before, everyone thought we’re making a Soulslike game,” explained Liang. “So in order to prove we have a totally different combat system for the core gameplay, we’re showcasing these combat demos. But now people have maybe come the other way around, they think it’s a hack-and-slash with no story and you just go kill to the end, but it’s not something like that. It’s more like a Resident Evil but fighting with blades.” Liang also spoke about how exploration will be a core part of the gameplay in Phantom Blade Zero along with its fast-paced action gameplay and character progression. He describes the game’s exploration aspects as coming from a Souls games, while the “vibes” come for Resident Evil. “Anything that is useful and good for us to make our pillar, a playable kung fu movie with exploration and character progression, we’ll make use of it,” he said. “Whether it’s exploration from a Souls game or vibes from Resident Evil or combat from this hack-and-slash game, we’ll take that and bring them together. But the overall experience is still very coherent. It’s not ripped apart from something else.” Ultimately, S-Game wants to bring back classic kung fu action back in its own way. With Phantom Blade Zero, the studio says that its ideologies and principles in game design hold everything together. If one aspect were to fail, it would also bring the rest of the game down with it. “We have deeper ideologies and principles in designing the game,” said Liang. “If we don’t have that, every element we brought from different genres would feel separate and fall apart. One is to bring back the golden age of Chinese kung fu movies, starting from Bruce Lee in the 1970s and into maybe the early 2000s. We want to rekindle this passion for the kung fu movie. The other one, for gaming itself, we want to rediscover the golden age of PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2.” Phantom Blade Zero is currently in development for PC and PS5. While it doesn’t have a release date as of yet, the studio might be targeting a Fall 2026 release window.     ‘Sunderfolk’ Review: Revolutionary Smartphone Controls Make This D&D-Inspired Tactical RPG a Co-Op Blast
    You’ll put your controller down a lot while playing “Sunderfolk” — but that’s a good thing. The new tactical RPG video game puts control of its fantasy creatures in the palm of your hand (alongside up to three of your friends) with some revolutionary smartphone controls. Instead of using a PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch controller, you’ll use an app on your phone to control your character’s movements and attacks as they fight hordes of enemies in turn-based combat. Taking place in a mystical world called the Sunderlands, a peaceful village called Arden, where its denizens are magical, talking animals, is under attack by dark forces. A group of six heroes, including the arcanist crow, bard bat, berserker polar bear, pyromancer salamander, ranger goat and rogue otter, must team up and stop the spread of evil before it takes over the Sunderlands. Related Stories The good vs. evil story is simple and fine enough, but it takes a backseat to the crisp graphics, intricate co-op gameplay and seamless controls from your phone. “Sunderfolk” is the debut game from new studio Secret Door, released by developer and publisher Dreamhaven. Michael Morhaime, the co-founder and former CEO of Blizzard Entertainment, created Dreamhaven with many of his past colleagues, and the charismatic characters and sharp controls of Blizzard’s prestige games shine through in “Sunderfolk.” The goofy grin of the pyromancer as you launch a fireball, the stoic, humorless gaze of the ranger and the bruising hammer slam of the berserker are some of the infectious character quirks that make each animal a joy to play. Popular on Variety With six characters, there are dozens of gameplay combinations to try out and master in “Sunderfolk.” While the game is mean to be played in couch co-op with up to four people, one solo gamer can take control of 2-4 of the heroes and tackle missions just as easily. You can swap characters between missions, and each hero equally levels up and unlocks more powerful abilities as the game progresses, so nobody is lagging behind. If you want to rush in, absorb blows and dole out damage, then the berserker (naturally) is for you. Pairing the berserker with the ranger or bard, who can power up party members and weaken enemies, makes for a good team composition. And more magical users may gravitate toward the pyromancer, who can litter the field with fire and heal itself with the flames, or the arcanist, who deploys decoys on the field and can teleport long distances. There’s a character for every playstyle, and plenty of combinations to fight through each mission. With just the flick of a finger, you can control the movement, choose attacks and do just about everything else from a smartphone. The only time you need to use a normal controller is booting the game up and launching the software, from there you can ditch your controller completely and use your phone. It takes a bit to get used to, but the controls quickly become second nature and intuitive. It may be out of the norm to use a phone for most games (if you’re not playing “Jackbox”), but it makes for a refreshing experience that more titles could surely employ. It’s hard to capture the tabletop magic of playing Dungeons & Dragons with your friends, but “Sunderfolk” comes pretty close. Playing with 1-3 other players in couch co-op makes for strategic gameplay that rewards thought-out combat and combining heroes’ skills. Only one copy of the game is needed to play locally, but on the down-side, gaming online with friends requires screen-sharing or remote play. At a time when co-op games seem to be having a renaissance, it would’ve been easier if “Sunderfolk” had the same online friend pass that recent hit “Split Fiction” used. Nevertheless, assembling a party of heroes or playing solo is just as fun. Overall, “Sunderfolk” is perfect for fans of tactical RPGs or D&D fantasy action. The characters invite you right in, and the strategic, varied levels will keep you hooked.

    Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza prices remain unchanged for physical and digital editions
    Nintendo announced Friday via an update to its website that Nintendo Switch 2 games Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza will sell for the originally announced prices of $79.99 and $69.99 respectively, including both the physical and digital versions of the titles. This comes after the company previously delayed Switch 2 pre-orders, prompting speculation that the console and game prices would be raised in light of the Trump administration’s announced tariffs. On Friday, Nintendo also confirmed that pre-orders for the U.S. would now go live on April 24, and that prices for the console would are unchanged. The Switch 2 will remain priced at $449.99 for the unit alone and $499.99 for the Mario Kart World bundle. However, per the company’s statement, “Nintendo Switch 2 accessories will experience price adjustments from those announced on April 2 due to changes in market conditions. Other adjustments to the price of any Nintendo product are also possible in the future depending on market conditions.” You can find more details on the pricing on the company’s website. The Switch 2 launch date of June 5 remains the same.

    Blizzard Will Detail Diablo IV’s Season 8: Belial’s Return On April 24
    Blizzard has announced that it will host a Diablo IV developer live stream on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 11 a.m. PT / 2 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. BT, where it will announce details about the upcoming Season 8: Belial's Return, which is due to launch on April 29, 2025, five days after the livestream. The live stream event will also be followed by a Q&A period during which players can ask questions directly to the development team. Should you miss it in the moment and don't want to rewatch the entire stream, Blizzard will also publish an article recapping everything the live stream discusses. "Tune in to learn more about the new questline coming with the season, new seasonal powers, and more," Blizzard wrote in a blog post. More in-depth details about everything coming in Season 8, like the patch notes, will likely come closer to its April 29 launch. This live stream will instead be our first real look at the new season, and hopefully, some details on the quality of life changes, the new collaboration with an outside series, and Blizzard's plans for Diablo IV's second anniversary, all announced in the 2025 roadmap. Also revealed in that roadmap was the news that Diablo IV will not have a full expansion in 2025 but instead will receive a series of seasonal updates throughout the year. A new expansion on the scale of Vessel of Hatred will be out sometime in 2026. That's not to say the seasonal updates won't have anything exciting for players. Season 8 in particular will let players take advantage of boss powers for the first time, which players have already been testing in the PTR for over a month now.     Star Wars Crossover Coming Soon To Monopoly Go
    Starting May 1, Monopoly Go players might see some characters appearing from a galaxy far, far away. That's because the mobile game is getting a Star Wars collaboration that will see Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader meeting up with Mr. Monopoly.Announced at Star Wars Celebration Japan, the Monopoly Go crossover will cover the Skywalker Saga as well as The Mandalorian. Confirmed characters coming to the game (along with the previously mentioned) include Han Solo, R2-D2, Yoda, Anakin Skywalker, and Qui-Gon Jinn. There will be a Star Wars Go sticker album to unlock as well as special tokens, shields, and emojis. The Star Wars collaboration will run through July 2. Monopoly Go was the biggest mobile game launch of 2023, according to developer Scopely. The free-to-play game reportedly brought in over $2 billion in revenue after just 10 months of availability.
