The internet reacts to The Last of Us season two's latest episode
The internet reacts to The Last of Us season two's latest episode Joel in one. Image credit: HBO News by Victoria Kennedy News Reporter Published on April 22, 2025 The Last of Us season two is under way, and this weekend we were treated to the second episode. 'Treated' is, perhaps, the wrong word to use here. After all, there were some pretty major story beats in this episode, and well, you know voices on the internet have opinions on what happened. Please be aware of major spoilers for The Last of Us below. The Death of Console Exclusives Is Inevitable and I Don't Know How I Feel About It. Watch on YouTube We knew it was coming, but it happened perhaps sooner than many of us expected. In the second episode of The Last of Us season two, Joel is killed by Abby. Of course, there is no bad blood at all between Pedro Pascal and Kaitlyn Dever, who play Joel and Abby on the show. Soon after the episode aired, Pascal shared a heartwarming picture of the two on set, captioning the image: "Thank you, scene partner. You little miracle." Image credit: Pedro Pascal But, while Pascal and Dever are smiling in the photo, there is no denying that the moment of Joel's death was tough, for the cast and viewers. Perhaps it was harder for those coming to the show without any prior knowledge of the source material. This user seems to think so. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. But, then again, even those who already knew Joel is killed by Abby in The Last of Us Part 2 are still pretty upset. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Some have said they will never emotionally recover from seeing Ellie lying next to Joel's dead body at the end of the episode. "Ellie crawling to Joel’s body and cuddling up next to it.. that was way worse than the game," wrote one viewer. "Does it ever keep y'all up at night knowing how Joel was ready to end it all? to accept his fate in death, until he heard Ellie yelling for him to get up? What little energy he had left was used in trying to push himself to live for her," another viewer wrote, referring to the way Joel lifted his fingers while lying on the ground in a beaten bloody mess. "THE WAY HIS FINGERS TWITCH. HE WANTED TO REACH OUT TO HER. OH MY GOD," reads yet another post. Here's another user so upset by the whole ordeal that full caps lock was the only way to write. "ELLIE LAYING ON TOP OF JOELS BODY WAS THE MOST FOUL THING I’VE EVER SEEN," they wrote. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Some viewers have just decided to go into denial, and as far as they are concerned Joel is absolutely fine, thank you very much. "I'm still convinced Joel'ss death scene was a mass hallucination like no that actually did not happen," wrote one hopeful viewer. "Guys he got up !! He listened to Ellie !! im so glad hes alright that was a close one," one person said with an image of Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal on set. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "Joel Miller dies? I'm not sure what episode you're referring to. In what I watched, the old man's fine," another added. "He's working in his office with a nice cup of coffee, already halfway in on rebuilding his connection with Ellie. They're watching a movie together in the next episode, actually." To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Others shared photos of Pascal's Joel with his daughter Sarah, played in series one by Nico Parker. "25 long years later, they’re finally together," wrote one viewer with a collection of images. Image credit: @urbluestdays Also, as pointed out by several viewers online, Tommy still doesn't know his brother is dead. And, let's be honest, he already isn't exactly having the best day. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Some have now joked they need to take some time away from work on compassionate leave. Image credit: @tylerrispunk I think this user has summed things up quite well for all of us watching The Last of Us season two. They captioned an image of Pascal bobbing about in the ocean while on holiday as this: "New photo of Pedro Pascal swimming in our tears." Agree, we have probably all cried an ocean's worth since episode two aired earlier this week. At least he's still alive to look after Grogu in The Mandalorian, I suppose… Image credit: @wizardjarin On the plus side, though, at least Joel knew he was handsome before he was beaten to a pulp. Abby said it both this episode and the first episode. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Naughty Dog and HBO have already confirmed The Last of Us will be back for a third season, with showrunner Craig Mazin stating: "We approached season two with the goal of creating something we could be proud of. The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals." For more, you can check out my feature on the show's latest episode: Joel dominates headlines, but it's Tommy who shines in The Last of Us season 2 episode two.

Ace Attorney developer responds as AI research pits various models against original game with mixed results
Ace Attorney developer responds as AI research pits various models against original game with mixed results "It's supposed to be simple for a human." Image credit: Capcom News by Tom Phillips Editor-in-Chief Published on April 22, 2025 A developer who worked on Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney has commented on recent research that pitted various AI models against the classic courtroom series' first installment. As reported by Automaton, Hao AI Lab used Ace Attorney to try and benchmark four AI models' memory, reasoning skills, visual understanding and strategic decision-making - with some performing better than others. While none of the AI models managed to beat the game, Google Gemini and Open AI's o1 managed to reason their way through to its penultimate episode. "This index uses Ace Attorney to evaluate the AI's practical ability to 'find inconsistencies in testimony, select appropriate evidence to support them, and refute them most effectively'," AI researcher K Ishi wrote. "As a result, the best 'lawyer' was o1." The research was designed to test each AI's ability to consider "the entire flow of the case and make decisions without being limited to current testimony", Ishi added, as well as having the "ability to consider the timing of 'meaningful' situations and create the most effective strategy". Each AI's understanding would also have to remain flexible enough to react to fresh evidence coming to light mid-trial, he continued. You can watch each of the four AI models tested play the game via the video in the embed below. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "How should I put this, I never thought the game I worked on so desperately 25 years ago would come to be used in this way, and overseas at that (laughs)," wrote Ace Attorney developer Masakazu Sugimori, who composed the game's soundtrack and voiced antagonist Manfred von Karma. "I find it interesting how the AI models get stumped in the first episode," Sugimori continued, in response to seeing the research. "[Ace Attorney director Shu] Takumi and [executive producer Shinji] Mikami were very particular about the difficulty level of Episode 1 - it's supposed to be simple for a human. Maybe this kind of deductive power is the strength of humans?" "The reason why Takumi and Mikami were so particular about balancing the difficulty level of Ace Attorney's first episode was because 'there was no other game like it in the world at the time'," Sugimori added. "It had to be a difficulty that would be acceptable to a wide playerbase, but it had to avoid being insultingly simple too. They were going for the kind of difficulty that gives you a sense of satisfaction when the solution hits you." And as far as we know, no AI has been programmed to feel that same sense of satisfaction - yet. Come back in five years, though, and it'll be interesting to see whether the AI models of 2030 can beat the game. Eurogamer recently visited Microsoft to see more of Muse, its generative AI game tool everyone hates. What's really going on and why is it being marketed at Xbox fans? We took a look.

Diablo 4 devs want to make the game much harder and more methodical, but don’t want the game to become a “slog”
You can trust VideoGamer. Our team of gaming experts spend hours testing and reviewing the latest games, to ensure you're reading the most comprehensive guide possible. Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games here The next Diablo 4 season is almost upon us, reviving the Lord of Lies for a brand-new boss fight and allowing players to use Boss Powers as their seasonal bonus. Following the positive response to the higher difficulty of the Season of Witchcraft, Blizzard wants to continue making the game harder. However, while the Diablo 4 team is working to make the game more challenging for long-time players, they also explain that they can’t make the game too hard. With this in mind, the team has a tough balance to find—one that make take a while to truly nail—and they’re hoping they don’t accidentally turn the game into a “slog”. Diablo 4 difficulty will ramp up even more Speaking to Polygon, Blizzard revealed its plans to slow Diablo 4 down and make it more methodical and challenging, similar to Diablo 2. Lead live game designer Colin Finer explained that there were parts of Season 7 where players could just AFK their way through the game, which “wasn’t something that we felt was true to Diablo” as a whole. In PTR tests for the current season, some players were unhappy at the new powerful bosses due to Blizzard’s “extreme” testing. With this in mind, Season 8 is the start of a new push for a harder ARPG, but more changes are coming. “It’s still a little bit more difficult than season 7,” Finer said. “We think that that little tick of difficulty is really going to help the overall game feel much more rewarding because you’re overcoming actual challenges.” The Diablo 4 developer explained that there’s a tonne of work to be done on refining the game’s difficulty. With an internal 10-year roadmap of improvements coming to the game, Blizzard is hoping to keep the current game going for a long while, and that means they need to make sure the game is satisfying for all players. “It’s a tricky balance because to feel rewarded for something, you have to overcome a challenge. If there isn’t enough challenge, then it just sort of feels like you’re getting candy for free and you don’t really feel that satisfaction of overcoming a boss,” he said. “[Diablo 4 needs to be] just challenging enough to feel rewarding, but not so challenging that it feels like we’re just slowing the game down and making it a slog,” he continued. New images could change cancer diagnostics, but ICE detained the Harvard scientist who analyzes them
A groundbreaking microscope at Harvard Medical School could lead to breakthroughs in cancer detection and research into longevity. But the scientist who developed computer scripts to read its images and unlock its full potential has been in an immigration detention center for two months — putting crucial scientific advancements at risk. The scientist, the 30-year-old Russian-born Kseniia Pertova, worked at Harvard’s renowned Kirschner Lab until her arrest at a Boston airport in mid-February. She is now being held at ICE’s Richwood Correctional Center in Monroe, Louisiana, and fighting possible deportation to Russia, where she said she fears persecution and jail time over her protests against the war in Ukraine.Petrova’s case and the detention of academics across the country has damaged the ability of universities in the United States to recruit and retain leading talent, experts and Petrova’s colleagues said. In fields where expertise is often highly specialized, the loss of talent could have dire consequences globally for the future of medicine and scientific discovery. Scientists and faculty members are planning to leave institutions across the country, legal experts said, because they’re worried that their visas could be revoked or that they could be swept up in immigration actions.“I would call it a grinding machine,” Petrova,Petrova’s first immigration court hearing in Louisiana is scheduled for Tuesday morning. Her lawyer, Gregory Romanovsky, said that they expect to have more information on her asylum case after the hearing.Dr. Leon Peshkin, a principal research scientist at Harvard’s Department of Systems Biology and Petrova’s manager and mentor, received a call from Customs and Border Protection on Feb. 16 after agents detained Petrova at Logan International Airport in Boston for failing to declare samples of frog embryos to be used in scientific research.“We just got a call saying, ‘She’s denied entry. That’s all we can tell you to protect her privacy,’” he said. Peshkin added that the caller didn’t disclose Petrova’s whereabouts, leaving him scrambling  to track her down.Romanovsky said that CBP typically imposes two penalties for such customs violations: the forfeiture of the items and a fine, usually around $500, and that “for a first-time violation, the fine is typically reduced to $50.” Instead, officials canceled Petrova’s J-1 scholar visa.“It appears to be part of a broader effort to create an unwelcoming and hostile environment for noncitizens,” Romanovsky said. A DHS spokesperson told NBC News on Monday that Petrova had been “lawfully detained after lying to federal officers about carrying substances into the country.”“They asked if I have any biological samples in my luggage. I said yes,” Petrova said before describing her confusion over procedures and an interrogation by Customs and Border Patrol officers.“Nobody knew what was happening to me. I didn’t have any contact, not to my lawyer, not to Leon, not to anybody. And the next day, they didn’t say what would happen. I was waiting in a cell,” she said.Kseniia Petrova.Courtesy Petrova's attorneyPeshkin said international researchers have become increasingly worried in response to the Trump administration’s aggressive approach to illegal immigration. When asked whether he’s concerned that these policies might discourage other international scientists from coming to Harvard, he said: “I’m not concerned that it may. I am horrified that it does.” “It’s already having an effect. I hear from many colleagues that people who were planning to stay have changed their minds because they need to travel,” Peshkin said, adding that scientists often attend conferences around the world to present their research and share knowledge. A recent survey by the scientific journal Nature revealed that 75% of the 1,600 scientists surveyed were considering relocating to Europe or Canada, citing actions taken by President Donald Trump. Separately, a tracking database from Inside Higher Ed shows that, as of April 18, more than 240 colleges and universities have reported that over 1,550 international students and recent graduates have had their legal status changed by the U.S. State Department. About 180 international students have filed 28 federal lawsuits seeking to regain their Student and Exchange Visitor Program status or U.S. visas, Inside Higher Ed reports. A lawsuit filed by international students, among them Ph.D. candidates in STEM fields, on April 15 argues that recent visa terminations are “arbitrary, capricious, and contrary to constitutional right, power, privilege, or immunity.” The plaintiffs argue that the sudden policy changes threaten their academic and professional futures.Harvard recruited Petrova about two years ago. She graduated from the prestigious Russian Physics and Technology Institute and came highly recommended, Peshkin said. She also attended the same high school in Moscow that he did, a place he describes as being for “people who are usually selfless, devoted, fanatic scientists, ascetics.”“These are people who aren’t in science to make money. They’re in science because they feel it’s their mission to understand how nature works and find cures,” Peshkin said.Peshkin immediately saw this quality in Petrova’s devotion to her work and her willingness to go beyond computational science, which was what she was recruited to do. He explained that their lab’s research “requires a unique set of skills because you have to both be able to work as an embryologist and do applied math, modeling, data analysis and bioinformatics — all in one package.”When asked how many people in his lab could do all of that, he said simply: “That was only her. It was only her.”Others echoed that sentiment. Dr. William Trim, a postdoctoral fellow who is a co-worker and housemate of Petrova, underscored her irreplaceable role in their research project using the one-of-a-kind microscope. Petrova developed the computer scripts to analyze the 100,000 images contained in the microscope.“I’m very confident she is the only way we can achieve the true potential of this microscope and the insights we could make,” Trim said. “Without her, I fully believe that all the insights into cures or fundamental biology that we could make will not be made.”Trim visited her at the correctional center in Louisiana. He recently sent her biology books upon request, so she can study while in detention. He, like others, described her as uniquely dedicated to her work.Petrova doesn’t see herself that way — she’s just passionate about the work and her team, and told NBC News in interviews over video link that she thinks the job at the Kirschner lab was “a miracle.”In 2021, after earning her master’s, Petrova was recruited by Dr. Konstantin Severinov, a prominent Rutgers molecular biologist, for a genome-sequencing project in Moscow. “She’s a very talented scientist with huge potential … the capacity to be the best of the best,” he said. When asked about her political activism, Petrova said that she believes there “should be democracy in science,” and that America was a “beautiful place” where people can express themselves freely.“I don’t want to hide my political opinion,” she said. “If you want to say something against Putin, there is no way you won’t be in prison. There is no way you won’t be arrested.”Trim and a growing number of international scientists are increasingly worried by how immigration policies are being enforced in the United States. Meanwhile, he and his colleagues anxiously await Petrova’s fate. “We really don’t know if we’re ever going to see her again,” he said, “because if they deport her to Russia, we may never see her again.”

Diablo 4 is changing its battle pass to be more like Call of Duty starting with Season 8, and it actually doesn't sound terrible
Wary of Reliquaries Diablo 4 is changing its battle pass to be more like Call of Duty starting with Season 8, and it actually doesn't sound terrible Season 8: Belial’s Return arrives soon in Diablo 4, and with it, a new battle pass system that's a little more complicated than the one we currently have. Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment. News by Sherif Saed Contributing Editor Published on April 22, 2025 Blizzard has officially revealed a few of the remaining details about the next Diablo 4 season, coming to the game on April 29. We’ve known much about Season 8: Belial’s Return thanks to the PTR (Public Test Realm) the developer hosted for the new season last month, and quite unsurprisingly, not much has changed. Separate from all the new content and changes to the endgame, Season 8 will also see the introduction of a new type of battle pass that should offer players more freedom in how they unlock its content. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Season 8: Belial’s Return arrives alongside patch 2.2.0, which includes the bulk of the changes that affect all players. As the name suggests, the big baddie this season is Belial - or, at least, his Apparations, which have now flooded Sanctuary. Sayeena, and Jarius are your NPC handlers this season, and they’re who you’ll be dealing with throughout the seasonal quest, and it's to them you'll turn in your bounties to earn faction rep. The Lord of Lies quest itself can be started by speaking to the Stranger in Kyovashad’s city centre by the Waypoint. Said faction rep can be earned mainly by taking part in Apparition Incursion, which is the new rotating event in Season 8. The longer you stay in the event zone and the more of them you cull, one of ten Apparition Bosses will spawn to hunt you down, and each of them has a unique Boss Power you can claim. The big spread. | Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment. Which nicely leads into the big mechanic this season: Boss Powers. Each power has two effects, Main and Modifier. You can equip one Main and three Modifiers at any one time. Most Boss Powers can be acquired at any difficulty level, but some are only available in Torment I or higher. There are 24 of them, which you can claim from World, Event, and Lair bosses after killing them for the first time. The other major gameplay addition in Season 8 is the rework to the endgame boss ladder, now simply known as Lair Bosses. Not much has changed there since players got a chance to test out the new system with the 2.2.0 PTR, but the idea is that summoning each boss is now a much more straightforward process, and you’ll more clearly be able to see their location on the map, and how much of the required materials you have. Bosses have also been rearranged into three tiers: Initiate, Greater, and Exalted. Now, the battle pass. Starting with Season 8, the old linear track of rewards will be going away, and replaced with Reliquaries, which sort of work like Sectors in a Call of Duty battle pass. Each Reliquary is made up of standard rewards, and a bonus reward you earn once you buy everything else. Similarly, you’re free to pick any Reliquary to start with. As a result, there’s now yet another currency, one used specifically to unlock items within the Reliquaries. It’s called Favor Tokens, and much like the battle pass tokens in Call of Duty, they’re earned by slaying monsters and completing quests, i.e., playing the game. You can hold up to 99 Favor Tokens, and save as many for future seasons. Watch on YouTube The normal battle pass, starting with Season 8, will contain four Reliquaries. Only one - Belial’s Return - is free, while the rest will cost you Platinum. You can buy a bundle that contains all of them for 1,000 Platinum (same price as the premium pass in the current model), or pick the ones you want individually. Each one is designed to have a theme; one will only contain weapon skins, animal skins and so on. In order to earn that season’s full amor set, however, you’re going to need to buy and complete all Reliquaries, because each one’s bonus reward is one piece of the set. This is the new battle pass screen. | Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment. Much like Call of Duty, this new system allows for limited-time battle passes that exist alongside the main seasonal one. Blizzard is calling those Event Reliquaries, and they’re going to arrive whenever there’s a an event active in-game. We’re also getting one with each IP collaboration, starting with Berserk - which will be available May 6 - June 3. The Accelerated Battle Pass is also gone as a result of this overhaul, replaced with the Deluxe Battle Pass Bundle, which costs the same 2,800 Platinum ($25), unlocks the full Guise of the Deceiver armor (this season’s set), wings, and the new Owl pet. The Season Journey, however, will remain, it’s just gonna live under a different menu now. You can still tick the quests off the board to earn each page’s set of rewards. This menu now also includes Season Blessings, which is where you'll go to spend your Smoldering Ashes on game-wide buffs like you’re used to. Catch up on the full Blizzard blog post for more, if you’re interested.

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Now Boasts 300 Playable Titles
Image: Damien McFerran / Nintendo LifeWith the recent addition of the GBA title Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion, the paid service now boasts a total of 300 playable titles in the West. So to be clear, this count excludes SP titles, Japanese exclusives, and the upcoming line-up of GameCube titles for the Switch 2. And yes, just to address the elephant in the room, we would have already hit 300 titles if it weren't for the removal of Super Soccer back in March. Still, 300 games is a lot, not to mention the access you're also getting to titles like F-Zero 99, Tetris 99, the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass, Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Happy Home Paradise, and Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion. And even if you're not on the higher tier, you've still got a wealth of classic titles to choose from – 187 of them, in fact! Are there still improvements to be made? Sure. We'd love it if everything were just included in one app (and technically it is, if you head into the Nintendo Switch Online hub – but we mean the proper game catalogue apps), and like many folks, we wish that we could still purchase titles on an ad-hoc basis like the old days. Alas. It's a pretty great line-up of games though, and we know it's going to increase by at least three when the Switch 2 launches on 5th June 2025. GameCube games will be available exclusively on the new hardware at the Expansion Pack level, adding The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, SoulCalibur II, and F-Zero GX on day one. Nintendo will also be expanding its online capabilities with the Switch 2 by introducing GameChat, allowing you to talk directly with friends online via a built-in microphone. A camera will also be on sale that will allow proper face-to-face conversations during gameplay (and you don't need the official camera, either - any USB-C compatible device will do the job).
