One of the most powerful work laptops I've tested this year is not a ThinkPad or MacBook
ZDNET's key takeaways HP's 14-inch EliteBook X G1a features AMD's latest Ryzen AI Pro chip, starting at $2,184.It's a powerful enterprise laptop with lots of I/O, a sleek form factor, and comfortable keyboard. It's expensive, and can run warm under a heavy workload. more buying choices HP reorganized its laptop lineup last year, renaming its high-performance business devices to the EliteBook X series. The first laptop from this series I've tested is the 14-inch HP EliteBook X G1a, an impressive enterprise laptop with a lot to like, but a few considerations that make it unique. Also: I tested Lenovo's budget ThinkPad, and it's a no-frills workhorse ready for the workdayThere are a few configurations of this laptop, the most premium featuring an AMD Ryzen AI 9 processor -- one of the most cutting-edge chips on the market right now -- and an OLED display, but the one I tested had the AMD Ryzen AI 7 Pro 360 processor, 32GB of RAM, and a 14-inch matte WUXGA IPS display. This is a business laptop aimed at professionals, and it aims to combine the connectivity of a ThinkPad, the sleek form factor of a MacBook, and HP's signature minimalist, if non-descript, design.  details View at Amazon On the surface, it's minimalist and rather corporate-looking, with a matte WUXGA display and an abundant selection of ports. It passes the one-finger test, and opens up to a rather standard display with 400nit brightness and 60Hz refresh rate and a compact and efficient keyboard. The keyboard is one of its best features. It's utterly silent, with a snappy tactile feel with key travel that (almost) feels mechanical. The keys are spacious and smooth, and the backlighting is effective and well-designed. Similarly, the trackpad is responsive and premium, even if the clicks feel a little on the "heavy" side. Kyle Kucharski/ZDNETI do wish it had a haptic trackpad, however, as it would go a long way toward making it more premium, especially as a device geared toward a sophisticated demographic: business leaders and tech experts. When you consider the price of this laptop, it seems like a missed opportunity. During my testing, I found this laptop really enjoyable to use for long days at work, and a big part of that was due to the well-designed ergonomics of this laptop. Unlike other machines, which require the user to adjust to bold or unorthodox design choices, the EliteBook X G1a fits like a familiar glove right off the bat, making it a solid long-day-at-work type of laptop.   Also: I've tested dozens of ThinkPads - this model checks all the right boxes for meIf the keyboard and trackpad contribute to an enjoyable physical form, the abundant I/O selection solidifies its practicality. You've got an HDMI, three USB-C (one Thunderbolt 4 on each side -- thank you), a USB-A port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Kensington lock slot. This is, in my opinion, one of the best combinations of ports you can ask for in 2025, the only thing that would make it better would be an SD card reader. It can certainly pivot to creative tasks, as well, as video editing in industry-standard programs like Da Vinci Resolve was a breeze. By the same token, gaming on this laptop is possible, but I wouldn't recommend this as a dedicated gaming machine with the 60Hz display and its heat dissipation (more on that later). While testing, I did encounter a hiccup connecting to an external monitor with the Thunderbolt 4 port. Both displays would flicker and restart intermittently, even after driver and Windows updates.Issues like this can be the result of any number of things, including issues with the operating system, hardware, or even the USB-C cord itself, so I don't necessarily fault the EliteBook, however this was the first time it happened to me after using dozens of laptops with that very connection and monitor. Also: One of my favorite laptops I've tested this year is ultraportable and has all-day battery lifeA busy workday prevented me from troubleshooting for an extended period of time, but this is where the generous port selection came in clutch, allowing me to simply swap to an HDMI connection. It's a perfect example of where redundant I/O access can solve tech problems, especially in the work setting. In terms of performance, the EliteBook X G1a is fast and responsive, with benchmarking numbers that back its claim of being a powerful enterprise machine. Cinebench 24 MCGeekbench 6.2.2 SCGeekbench 6.2.2 MCHP EliteBook X G1a (AMD Ryzen AI 7 Pro 360) 9542,81814,585Apple MacBook Pro M41,0003,82314,849Dell XPS 13 (Intel Core Ultra 7 "Lunar Lake") 5522,74311,005One thing I noticed during testing the EliteBook X G1a, however, was that it ran a bit hotter than other laptops in its class, kicking on the fans during sustained workloads in High Performance mode. When it's not being pushed, however, it's silent and cool, leading me to believe there's simply a threshold here with the hardware. At no point did I see any evidence of throttling, however. Continuing its specialization in the professional sphere, the EliteBook X G1a features a 74.5Whr battery, which is on the large size for a laptop of this size, earning it just over 11 hours during our standard battery test. This is good, sure, but it didn't quite translate to the spectacular duration I was expecting. Particularly when you compare this to competitors. Also: Dell's latest XPS 13 hits the sweet spot of performance and value for me. Here's whyFor example, this is about the same as what we got during our testing of the MacBook Pro M4, while that laptop's price even comes in a little less, and, well, it's a MacBook. Conversely, HP's own OmniBook X 14 with the Snapdragon X Elite was an absolute marathon machine, earning over 20 hours. Of course, the hardware on the OmniBook is a bit more modest, but its 65Wh battery overperforms in a way that can't be ignored. As I spent more time with this laptop, however, I came to understand its intended use case as a device that trades in the ultrathin and light form factor for raw power, making it a durable, reliable workhorse.ZDNET's buying adviceThere are no shortage of thin and light laptops out there with marathon batteries. The HP EliteBook X G1a is, comparatively, more focused on providing reliable muscle during working hours. The beefy hardware takes full advantage of the large battery, the abundant ports keep your options open, and the comfortable keyboard acts as an ergonomic command center so you can hunker down and get work done. However, all that hardware can run warm when it's pushed, and this is not a cheap laptop. If you're looking for a 14-inch device that's fully committed to the enterprise use case, it's a solid option, but keep in mind that it's quite specialized for that role. If you're looking for a similar laptop for a little less, I recommend the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 – another workhorse laptop with lots of connectivity and the same processor around the $1,500 mark.  How are the tariffs in the U.S. affecting consumer tech? The recent US tariffs on imports from countries like China, Vietnam, and India aim to boost domestic manufacturing but are likely to drive up prices on consumer electronics. Products like smartphones, laptops, and TVs may become more expensive as companies rethink global supply chains and weigh the cost of shifting production.Consumers may also experience notable price increases on robot vacuums and smart home products. Manufacturers are exploring options such as relocating production to countries with lower tariffs, but such transitions are complex and may not provide immediate relief. In the short term, shoppers should anticipate higher costs for robot vacuums due to these trade policies. Show more Featured reviews

4 Unforgettable Photos That Remind Us Why Extinction Feels Personal — From The Nature Photography Contest 2024
Across continents and species, these photos from the 2024 edition of The Nature Photography Contest ... More reveal how human hands now shape the survival of creatures that once thrived without us.© Diem Cao, The Nature Photography Contest 2024 Human-wildlife interactions take on many shapes, much like the evolving form of this school of fish in Nurturing the Living, Diem Cao’s stunning submission to The Nature Photography Contest 2024. The purpose of the contest, which invites photographers from all around the world, is to celebrate nature in all its vibrancy. This year, though, it saved a special spot for those quiet, powerful moments when human and animal lives intersect. Beyond Diem Cao’s work, the aptly named Sharing the Planet category includes a few other standout photographs, each a gentle reminder that life on Earth is, at its core, a shared endeavor. 1. Sweet Girl’s Essence By Sina Ritter“Sweet Girl” was a juvenile humpback whale from French Polynesia who met a tragic death when she was ... More struck by a speeding vessel, prompting calls to regulate traffic around the region’s islands.© Sina Ritter, The Nature Photography Contest 2024 In Sina Ritter’s category winner, Sweet Girl’s Essence, a juvenile humpback whale named Sweet Girl approaches diver Rachel Moore with calm familiarity in an interaction that, while remarkable, wasn’t rare for this individual. Known locally for her unusually gentle and inquisitive nature, Sweet Girl was a familiar presence off the coasts of Tahiti and Moorea. Just days after this photograph was taken, she was killed by a fast-moving vessel with her jaw broken and her head nearly severed. The collision occurred in a high-traffic corridor commonly used by ferries traveling at speeds up to six times the recommended limit during whale season. Her story is heartbreakingly common. It is estimated that four to five humpback whales are killed by vessel strikes between summer and fall, while five to six humpback whales meet the same fate between winter and spring in U.S. waters alone, according to a July 2021 study published in Frontiers in Marine Science. Sweet Girl’s death prompted renewed calls for regulatory changes, including a push to lower boat speeds to under 12 knots within a two-kilometer buffer zone of French Polynesia’s islands. Vessel strikes continue to be a cause for concern for humpback whales globally. For juvenile whales in particular, who spend more time near the surface and often explore coastal shallows, the risk is acute and growing. 2. Led To Safety By Richard De GouveiaWhile southern white rhinos are numbered much higher than their northern counterparts, they’re still ... More being poached at alarming rates, putting their status in grave peril.© Richard De Gouveia, The Nature Photography Contest 2024 In Richard de Gouveia’s Led to Safety, a female southern white rhino is guided away through the scrublands of South Africa’s Marataba Camps. It’s a brief moment of calm in what is, by necessity, a tightly orchestrated operation. The rhino is being relocated for collaring, a procedure that enables rangers to monitor her movements in real-time using AI-assisted tracking systems. This intervention is part of a growing set of strategies aimed at protecting rhinos from poachers. Between 2013 and 2021 alone, Kruger National Park lost 60% of its white rhino population. In 2024, South Africa still recorded 420 rhino killings, down from previous years, but still averaging more than one animal killed per day. While dehorning, relocations and collaring have shown localized success, they are no silver bullets. Poaching networks operate with military-grade precision, fueled by a transnational black market where rhino horn can fetch up to $400,000 per kilogram, a price tag that makes gold look cheap. This image is a reminder that every rhino saved today comes at considerable cost, coordination and urgency. 3. Mini Winnie By Renato GranieriMini Winnie is one among just over a hundred rescued western chimpanzees at Tacugama Chimpanzee ... More Sanctuary, a center in Sierra Leone that cares for chimpanzees orphaned by poaching and the illegal wildlife trade.© Renato Granieri, The Nature Photography Contest 2024 At first glance, Mini Winnie captures a tender exchange between species. A caregiver feeds a young chimpanzee at Sierra Leone’s Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary. But this quiet and humane moment belies the broader urgency of its context. Mini Winnie is a western chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus), a subspecies whose numbers have plummeted by more than 80% in the last two decades. The study found a 6% annual decline, driven by poaching, habitat loss and weak law enforcement. Once ranging across West Africa, the western chimpanzee is now extinct in at least three countries and confined to fragmented strongholds in places like Guinea and Sierra Leone. Sanctuaries like Tacugama increasingly becoming the final stronghold for survival. Founded in 1995, Tacugama today cares for over 100 rescued chimpanzees, many of them orphans from the illegal wildlife trade or victims of bushmeat poaching. Rehabilitation at Tacugama involves five phases, transitioning chimps from quarantine to semi-wild habitats within Sierra Leone’s Western Area Peninsula National Park. Photos like Mini Winnie reveal the infrastructure of survival for western chimpanzees quietly operating behind the scenes, one orphaned life at a time. 4. Vulture Restaurant 4 By Alain SchroederVultures at Jatayu vulture restaurant are cared for and provided a safe space to feed on cattle and ... More other animals that die of old age, without the risk of accidental diclofenac consumption.© Alain Schroeder, The Nature Photography Contest 2024 In Alain Schroeder’s frame, a vulture lies cradled in a burlap sling, its head gently supported by gloved hands, as conservationists in hazmat suits perform a routine health check. Taken at Nepal’s Jatayu vulture restaurant, the image captures the clinical, careful and deeply human reality of modern vulture conservation. The bird is being weighed, monitored and protected in a program that has become a model for vulture recovery worldwide. In the 1990s and early 2000s, South Asia’s vultures suffered the fastest population collapse ever recorded in the avian world. Species like the white-rumped vulture (Gyps bengalensis) declined by more than 99.9% due to a veterinary drug called diclofenac, used widely in livestock and lethally toxic to vultures consuming treated carcasses. Nepal banned diclofenac in 2006. That same year, conservationists and local communities established Jatayu — named after a mythical vulture from Hindu lore — as the world’s first community-managed vulture restaurant. Here, farmers bring old cattle to live out their final days. Once they die naturally, their drug-free remains are laid out for vultures in monitored “safe feeding zones.” By 2017, nesting sites in Pithauli, where Jatayu operates, had jumped from fewer than 20 to over 70. Tracked vultures from the site have flown as far as Pakistan, proof that the reach of recovery is spreading. Do photos like these inspire you to form deeper connections with the world around you? • Early RTX 5060 Ti benchmarks reveal why Nvidia withheld the 8GB version from reviewers
In brief: Nvidia's marketing for the RTX 5060 Ti has so far focused exclusively on the 16GB model, raising eyebrows as the company has refused to provide reviewers with access to the 8GB version. This decision suggests an effort to downplay the cheaper variant's underwhelming performance, and an early review appears to confirm those suspicions – at least, in certain scenarios. A review on Bilibili offers an early look at the 8GB version of Nvidia's RTX 5060 Ti, which has not been made available to Western media. The video reveals that halving the VRAM significantly affects performance in several notable games and hampers the effectiveness of multi-frame generation, the RTX 50 series' standout feature. To be fair, the 8GB RTX 5060 Ti holds its own against the 16GB model in synthetic benchmarks and many titles, including Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty (at reasonable settings), Counter-Strike 2, Resident Evil 4, Forza Horizon 5, F1 24, Call of Duty, and even Alan Wake 2. However, performance gaps do emerge in more demanding scenarios. Assassin's Creed: Shadows shows a 10 percent performance gap between the two variants, but the 8GB model performs significantly worse in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. At 1080p, average frame rates are about 23 percent lower, with one percent lows dropping by a staggering 30 percent. The gap narrows somewhat at 1440p. Even multi-frame generation can't fully mask the disparity due to the 8GB card's limited VRAM. In Cyberpunk 2077 at max settings, the 16GB model dips to 18 FPS, while the 8GB version bottoms out at just nine FPS. Activating 2x framegen equalizes performance, but a slight gap reappears at 4x, indicating that the 8GB card may struggle to benefit fully from multi-frame generation in future titles. Our recent review of the 16GB model labeled the RTX 5060 Ti as yet another misfire in an already disappointing lineup, and we haven't even touched the 8GB variant. Releasing a mid-range graphics card with just 8GB of VRAM in 2025, eight years after AMD's Radeon RX 580 launched with the same amount, should be unacceptable. Expect a full review from TechSpot once the 8GB 5060 Ti reaches store shelves. // Related Stories The continued push for 8GB mainstream GPUs is troubling, especially since this segment dominates the most popular price tier. Most of the top 10 GPUs on Steam are 60-class Nvidia cards with 8GB of VRAM, a trend the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB and the upcoming standard 5060 are likely to extend for years. That means a large share of PC gamers will remain stuck with memory-constrained hardware, limiting their performance in modern and future titles.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows appears to have been rated for the Nintendo Switch 2
The Pan European Game Information website, better known as PEGI, just rated Assassin’s Creed Shadows for the Nintendo Switch 2 — and that’s a pretty solid indication the game could make its way to the console either at or after its June 5 launch. That said, it’s also possible that someone simply clicked the wrong checkbox on the backend of the site and that Ubisoft has no intention of porting the game to the Switch 2, so take this with a grain of salt. PEGI is basically the European version of the ESRB, responsible for suggesting the appropriate target age for a game. If you go to the specific page for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it doesn’t list the Nintendo Switch 2, but if you look at the “Most Searched Games” subhead, it shows up there. Ubisoft While it’s not confirmed, chances are pretty good that this is a legitimate leak. With games like Cyberpunk 2077 getting a release on the Nintendo Switch, the age rating isn’t much of a concern. Ubisoft has also announced plans to release Star Wars Outlaws on the Nintendo Switch 2, so it isn’t a leap for the company to bring the latest Assassin’s Creed over, too. However, even if Shadows does launch on the Switch 2, it might not be a day one release title. Star Wars Outlaws doesn’t drop until September 4, and it’s possible that Shadows could get see a release later in the year. Recommended Videos Ubisoft may address the leak, but it isn’t likely. That said, it would be a nice perk to see Assassin’s Creed Shadows come to the Nintendo Switch 2. Several other entries from the franchise came to the original Switch, including the Ezio Collection and Assassin’s Creed III. The Switch 2 is certainly capable of running the title, although its graphics might be scaled back a bit. Editors’ Recommendations

What does quantum theory really tell us about the nature of reality?
The problem with quantum mechanics, or at least the reason even physicists don’t understand it, isn’t that it paints an unfamiliar picture of reality. It isn’t difficult to accept that the world of fundamental particles, of which we have no direct experience, is radically different to the world we perceive. The problem is instead that it doesn’t portray the hinterlands between these two worlds, offering no clear outline of how one emerges from the other. As a result, a century after it was committed to canvas, we still don’t know what this scientific masterpiece means for our understanding of reality. This article is part of a special series celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of quantum theory. Read more here. We aren’t short of ideas. Which of them you prefer is largely a matter of taste, or at least philosophical consideration, because they don’t tend to submit to experimental testing. As physicist N. David Mermin has joked: “New interpretations appear every year. None ever disappear.” In the past decade, however, something has begun to shift. One new twist on quantum theory is the first to make explicit observational predictions, raising hopes of empirical progress. Another, meanwhile, has gathered momentum because it can seemingly solve several perplexing quantum mysteries in one fell swoop – even if it implies that there is no such thing as objective reality after all. More promising still, physicists have even begun to feel out new ways to test the validity of such assumptions. As they turn mind-boggling thought experiments into real-world tests, we might finally be able to make progress on the question of what…

Security startup SplxAI raised $7 million to preemptively police AI. Here's its pitch deck.
Companies are racing to adopt AI in pursuit of productivity and profits, but the last thing anyone wants is a chatbot going off the rails.AI systems are vulnerable to all kinds of new threats, from data poisoning to adversarial attacks. In a World Economic Forum survey of over 200 business leaders in 2023, more than half said generative AIIt's now two years later, and it seems the majority of those business leaders were right: AI has given cyber attackers the upper hand. In a recent Accenture survey of 600 bank cybersecurity executives, four in five said generative AI is helping hackers faster than banks can keep up.As more companies worldwide adopt AI, Croatian security startup SplxAI wants to redefine howOne way companies do this now is through red-teaming, which involves simulating adversarial attacks on an AI system. But red-teaming can often take a few weeks or even months, and companies are racing to vet tools before they deploy them, SplxAI's CEO Kristian Kamber told BI. The company takes an offensive approach by adjusting system prompts — guidelines that shape how an AI model responds to user queries — reducing the need for additional defensive guardrails later. Before clients connect to SplxAI's platform, the company sends them a questionnaire to understand what risk means to them. They ask questions like, "Are there any questions your chatbot should not answer?" or "Which parts of the system prompt are confidential?"Elin.AI, for example, a chatbot geared toward Gen Z, said it "needs to do swearing because it needs to speak the language of the kids," Kamber said.Once SplxAI customizes its approach, it runs a series of attacks. It can run over 2,000 attacks and 17 scans in less than an hour. These include prompt injection attacks, in which AI systems are fed malicious prompts to check for profanity, misinformation, or data poisoning. It runs tests to check for bias, harmful content, or intentional misuse.Kamber said the tests have revealed a wealth of bias, misinformation, and vulnerabilities in the technology companies use.SplxAI ran tests on a popular workplace productivity tool that revealed it could let data leak between colleagues. Its tests on a healthcare company that operates chatbots at pharmacies revealed that the bots hallucinated when giving medical instructions. They told patients to take pills at the wrong times or offered incorrect instructions on how to use injection needles. It uncovered gender bias in a chatbot that provided career advice to students. The bot told young women to pursue careers as secretaries and young men to pursue careers as business managers.Based on its tests, SplxAI generates a report that lists the vulnerabilities of a system and its suggestions for fixing them. But the company goes a step further by changing system prompts. Kamber calls it "hardening" and said it's the biggest driver of the company's business. "We're doing a huge piece of remediation because otherwise no one will buy the platform if it's just testing and offensive security suggestions," Kamber said.An Arabic chatbot popular in the Middle East and Africa approached SplxAI with a request to ensure the chatbot didn't speak negatively about Abu Dhabi's royal family and other sensitive topics in the region. "We hardened the system prompt that much that you cannot even ask suggestive questions," Kamber said.Companies are these days preoccupied with shoring up not just one, but multiple agents, chatbots, or applications, as they automate complex tasks. After being approached by several Fortune 100 CEOs about red-teaming this type of work, SplxAI unveiled Agentic Radar — an open-source tool for mapping vulnerabilities in operations with multiple agents.Kamber said he's shocked by how quickly the world has woken up to the dangers of agentic AI. "Last year, no one was really understanding why AI red-teaming was needed. Now everyone is running to our door."Take a look at their 12-slide pitch deck. Controversial DeSantis-Linked Charity’s Zoom Meeting Hijacked by Porn and Nazis
By AJ Dellinger Published April 19, 2025 | Comments (0) | Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and his wife Casey DeSantis look on during a campaign stop with "DeSantis 2024" signs behind them © Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images The Hope Florida Foundation was supposed to be the kind of organization that would help Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ wife, Casey, build her resume for future political aspirations. It’s starting to look like it’ll sink them, instead. In the latest turn in the story of the charity-turned-trainwreck, a virtual board meeting for the DeSantis-backed organization was derailed by trolls who flooded the Zoom call with porn and Nazi symbols, according to a report from the Tallahassee Democrat. The meeting of Hope Florida Foundation’s leadership was scheduled for the morning of April 17, but, per the Tallahassee Democrat’s account, was quickly interrupted because the members didn’t know how to prevent audience members from sharing their screens. That led to folks hanging in the crowd stealing the show, displaying all sorts of unwanted content. The meeting was paused, and a “technical difficulties – please stand by” message was displayed while the admins tried (and failed) to get a handle on things before ending the affair altogether. When they tried to restart the meeting, it failed because, according to a pop-up message seen by people trying to join the second attempt, “Host has another meeting in progress.” So, about the “why” of that meeting, which did eventually happen six hours after its scheduled time, according to the Tampa Bay Times. The Hope Florida Foundation is in a bit of hot water. The organization, which was started by Casey DeSantis to reduce government spending on social welfare programs by replacing them with faith-based organizations and non-profits, is at the center of a probe over an allegedly illegal donation that is rapidly unraveling the board and even has Ron DeSantis trying to distance himself from his wife. It all started with a suspicious $10 million donation made to Hope Florida, which came from Medicaid care operator Centene. That big check was part of a larger $67 million out-of-court settlement between the company and the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration. According to Politico, Centene was directed to put $10 million of that settlement directly in the coffers of Hope Florida Foundation, which may have amounted to an illegal transfer of funds that should have gone to the state. That $10 million was allegedly used by Hope Florida to help two organizations—Save Our Society from Drugs and Secure Florida’s Future—with their efforts to defeat a ballot measure that would have legalized marijuana in the state, which ultimately failed to garner the 60% support needed to pass last November. Those donations from Hope Florida to the groups were reportedly encouraged by Governor DeSantis’ then-chief of staff James Uthmeier, and, according to the Tampa Bay Times, those two groups went on to make significant donations to the political action committee controlled by Uthmeier, who was named Florida attorney general earlier this year. The web is already pretty tangled, and that’s just the start of it. Republican state representative Alex Andrade has accused Uthmeier and Hope Florida of engaging in fraud and money laundering, and they don’t seem to have any good answers for those accusations. In the initially hijacked meeting, Hope Florida president Joshua Hay admitted that he couldn’t account for the $10 million donation, nor what it was used for. “We have no monitoring procedures. We have no staff,” he said on the call. The developing scandal appears like it might put an end to Casey DeSantis’ political ambitions before they even start, as it was expected that she would launch her own bid to become Governor of Florida in 2026 after her husband’s second term comes to an end. Now, Ron seems like he’s making sure that it’s only her career that is over. Earlier this week, when asked about the situation at Hope Florida, DeSantis took the opportunity to throw his wife under the bus and back it up just to make sure he hit her. “I really had no ownership of this,” he told the media. “I didn’t devise it. She devised it. She set the vision. She executed the vision.” He did say that the organization has had “positive results,” but that seems like a cherry on top of a shit sundae that he served to her. Sure seems like he’s not interested in being the first man. That said, being an alleged fraudster is anything but a career-ender in Florida. Republican Rick Scott was the CEO of a company that was hit with the biggest fine ever for Medicare and Medicaid fraud, and he managed to win not just two terms as Florida’s governor but is still representing the state in the US Senate. There’s not much that is truly disqualifying down there. Unlocking the diversity of wild and domesticated rice
Nature, Published online: 16 April 2025; doi:10.1038/d41586-025-01158-0The construction of a ‘pangenome’ sequence collection that incorporates the genomes of nearly 150 wild and cultivated rice varieties captures all the genetic diversity found in this plant. It reveals genes associated with disease resistance that are unique to wild rice, and provides insights into the origins of domesticated rice.
