Skate Will Not Have an Offline Mode, Still Slated for Early Access Launch in 2025
News Skate Will Not Have an Offline Mode, Still Slated for Early Access Launch in 2025 Developer Full Circle explained on Skate's official website that the game was designed from the ground-up to be online-only. Posted By Joelle Daniels | On 25th, Apr. 2025 Publisher EA and developer Full Circle have revealed more details about upcoming skateboarding game Skate. Through a new blog post featuring a Q&A, the studio has revealed that Skate will be an online-only game with no support for offline play. The studio has also reiterated that it is planning for an Early Access launch for Skate in 2025. “We are still planning on launching in Early Access later this year,” posted the studio on the official website. “We have an ambitious vision for skate.: an ever-growing, ever-evolving skateboarding sandbox that expands over time with the feedback of the players living in San Vansterdam. Our Early Access launch will only be Day One of that experience, a starting point from which new features, improvements, and content will be added over time.” The studio has also expanded on the fact that the Early Access version of Skate will not be considered a “finished version” of the game. Rather, development will continue on the game throughout its Early Access launch. At launch, Skate will feature the core gameplay, with more content planned for later. “We don’t consider the Early Access launch the ‘finished version’ of skate., and neither should you,” the studio explained. “But the skateboarding experience will be great, and you’ll have tons to do with your friends in San Vansterdam.” When it comes to having an offline mode, however, the studio wrote that the game has been designed from the ground up as being a constantly-evolving, online-only game. Throughout the game’s life, players will be able to find new content, live events, and even changes being made to the in-game city. “The simple answer: No,” wrote the studio about an offline mode. “The game and city are designed to be a living, breathing massively multiplayer skateboarding sandbox that is always online and always evolving. You’ll see bigger things evolve, like changes to the city over time, as well as smaller things, like live events and other in-game activities. In order to deliver on our vision of a skateboarding world, the game will always require a live connection. That is probably not much of a surprise if you’ve been in our playtest.” Further expanding on the state of development of Skate during its playtest, the studio has also explained why the game already features microtransactions. The decision was made in order to allow the studio to continue development on the game as it gets closer to launch. “We know that using real money during a playtest is a little unusual, but we think it’s the best way to properly assess and adjust the system before launch,” explained the studio. “If you see prices or other things changing over time, please understand that this is normal. And of course, you will receive the amount you spent during playtesting in San Van Bucks (SVB) when we reset for Early Access launch.” Skate is currently in development for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The PC and PS5 versions are undergoing playtests, while playtests for Xbox Series X/S are planned for later. Ariana Grande and Travis Scott’s Fortnite avatars to appear before jury for patent lawsuit
Epic Games has been fighting a crypto and metaverse company called Utherverse over patent infringement since 2021. Utherverse filed a lawsuit in June 2021 saying that Epic Games infringed on several of its patents related to people hanging out in big, virtual worlds with its Fortnite concert series — specifically, Ariana Grande and Travis Scott’s respective in-game performances. In January 2022, Epic Games filed a counterclaim wherein it says it has not only not infringed on Utherverse’s patents, but that several patents are invalid. Now, the two sides are headed for a jury trial set to begin on May 12, and the Grande and Scott digital performances are at the heart of it all.The two parties have been going back and forth in legal filings and meetings for years, narrowing the lawsuit down to one patent that describes technology used in “playing back an experience in a virtual worlds system,” per the original complaint. This could include letting people replay something that happened in a virtual world, like a concert or wedding. Utherverse, for its part, is self-described as “the world’s best 3D social network” where virtual events and “activities,” like weddings, are held. It’s got its own cryptocurrency that’s used in the virtual world. In the lawsuit, Epic Games has been arguing that Grande and Scott’s performances were created ahead of their concerts in Fortnite, so they aren’t recordings “of a prior experience that occurred in a virtual environment,” per a document filed Monday.Fortnite has been more than a battle royale video game for years now; it’s a space for people to hang out. Part of that experience is concerts. Epic Games broke Fornite player records in 2020 when Scott held an in-game concert that 27 million people showed up for. Grande headlined the next big Fortnite concert in 2021. Both events were huge, technical spectacles for Fortnite users to participate in. Travis Scott’s performance began with an explosion that transformed into a larger than life version of Scott as Fortnite players — in all their colorful, unique glory — danced at his feet. Fortnite players were transported into different locations as the concert continued — even heading underwater to swim around Scott as he performed. Grande’s concert took players into space and the clouds to float around Grande in bubbles. Naturally, there was plenty of space to emote, too. The concerts were replayed several times each over a course of a few days. The Fortnite concert series — regardless of the performer — has been a huge success for the game, which has continued to expand outward with its live events. But it’s the Travis Scott and Ariana Grande concerts that Utherverse is specifically calling out. Utherverse wants Epic Games to pay 15% of the revenue it earned from the two concerts. That information isn’t public, but a Forbes report from November 2020 suggested Scott grossed $20 million, including merchandise sales, from the Fortnite event. The jury trial set for May 12 is expected to run for four to five days. Polygon has reached out to both Utherverse and Epic Games for comment.See More: FortniteAndroidAndroidOS logoiOSiOS logomacOSmacOS logoNintendo SwitchNintendo Switch logoPlaystationPlaystation logoPlaystationPlaystation logoWindowsWindows logoXboxXbox logoXboxXbox logoExplore The GameWhy it mattersWhen Epic Games released the battle royale game, it took players and new platforms like Twitch by storm and drew more than 125 million players in its first year. The Next Skate Game Won’t Be Playable Offline To Support Its “Multiplayer Skateboarding Sandbox”
Players have asked EA for years to bring back the Skate series, and four years ago, EA finally answered those prayers with the official confirmation that the skateboarding series would indeed be coming back. Four years later, we know that was just an announcement at the time and that this new Skate game was only beginning its development when EA confirmed the series' return. But now that we're approaching its early access release sometime this year, we're learning more about it, and the latest bit of confirmed news is one that definitely won't go down well with fans. Spotted by Eurogamer, developer Full Circle confirmed that the new Skate game will not have an offline mode. You'll always need to be online and connected to the game's servers when playing. In an FAQ section towards the bottom of a new blog from Full Circle, the studio bluntly answered the question about an offline mode. "The simple answer: No. The game and city are designed to be a living, breathing massively multiplayer skateboarding sandbox that is always online and always evolving. You'll see bigger things evolve, like changes to the city over time, as well as smaller things, like live events and other in-game activities. In order to deliver on our vision of a skateboarding world, the game will always require a live connection." It's disappointing news for veteran fans of the series, many of whom likely don't want to be bothered with the live service elements of the new Skate game. They were just looking to spend hours enjoying the skateboarding mechanics and feeling that only the Skate series provided back when the original trilogy was in its heyday. While this new Skate game will launch in early access later this year, Full Circle also confirmed that more than 200,000 players have already gotten the chance to check it out in the game's closed alpha test that's been running since September 2024. If you want to join that number, you can still sign up for the playtest and hope to be selected. There's also always the hope that Full Circle will run an open beta ahead of the early access release closer to the launch. Deal of the Day

    Migrating away from Gamedev.net
Author @witchlord I tried sending an email but I'm not sure you got it (or any of my other emails for that matter, maybe they're going to spam or something 😅) so I'll propose this also in the forum instead.Over the years, the gamedev.net forums have become synonymous with problems: very slow website access, posts not being posted, posts showing up double, old threads getting locked, and (for the last few weeks) getting 502 server errors. It's becoming more and more of a burden to report issues, request features, comment on feedback etc., which in my opinion hurts Angelscript as a whole. (I know it's a little bit ironic that I'm posting this on gamedev.net; perhaps this could also be a call for GDNet admins to look into some of these problems 🙂)I think it has been requested in the past, but have you considered migrating the (official) Angelscript communication platform to something else? Perhaps the entire project could move from Sourceforge to Github (or any other service like it, I personally am a fan of Codeberg too), which would give a better place for discussions, bugreports, pull requests, and is in general a better way to find Angelscript's source code in modern day programming.I know it's a potentially big undertaking, so I fully understand if you're not ready for something like this. However, I'm happy to help in any way I can. Miss said:perhaps this could also be a call for GDNet admins to look into some of these problems 🙂)Indeed. Site performance is much better, but that has led to some stability issues as well as an over aggressive caching strategy (which is why your posts may take a moment to show). These are under investigation. Once resolved, the forums will be as good as any. Advertisement @miss I haven't received any e-mails from you. Are you using the correct e-mail? andreas@angelcode.com Feel free to just send a test e-mail to confirm it is working.I have indeed considered moving the source code repository to girhub. Especially due to their automated build and test tools for a variety of platforms. And in doing so I'll probably start using whatever they offer for bug reporting and tracking. However, I have no plans to move away from GameDev.net for the forum discussions. This has been my home for the last 25 years 🙂 I agree that there are issues the moment, and I've reported several to @khawk myself, but I'm certain Kevin will sort them out and make the GDnet forums great again as it used to be.
