In its latest earnings report for the previous fiscal year, Bandai Namco has revealed how well some of its titles did. As caught by Automaton, the company has seen its profits go up by an incredible amount – 995 percent – owing in large part to the success of the Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree, as well as the release of Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO. While profits saw a great jump, overall revenue had increased over the previous year by 22.3 percent, amounting to roughly $3.16 billion. This figure is well over the company’s own forecast of $2.57 billion in revenue. On the profits side of things, the company made $475 million, which was also well over the forecasted $208 million in profits. According to the earnings report, Bandai Namco’s revenue was helped quite a bit by major console releases. Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO, for instance, had sold more than 5.4 million copies. Overall sales of console games has been on the rise for Bandai Namco, with the company reporting 42.6 percent more sales than it had seen in the previous year. When it comes to its mobile titles, Bandai Namco is also seeing growth there, albeit at a slower rate. The company has reported a growth of 3.5 percent in sales year-on-year, with licensed titles based on popular manga and anime like Dragon Ball and One Piece, as well as other titles like Gakuen Idolmaster being major parts of the growth. Bandai Namco had revealed back in November that it was seeing great revenue increases thanks to Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO, which the company had also confirmed had sold more than 3 million copies in its first 24 hours of release. At the time, the company had reported net sales having increased 21.8 percent over the previous year, as well as a 188 percent increase in profits. Back in June 2024, Bandai Namco had confirmed that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree had sold more than 5 million copies. The sales figure came despite the backlash the DLC was seeing at the time, being perceived by many as being unfairly difficult. Developer FromSoftware had since responded to the complaints with a series of patches that brought down some of the game’s difficulty, however. Bandai Namco dropped a trailer Friday for (deep breath) new Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot downloadable content, Daima – Adventure Through The Demon Realm Part 1 arriving July 17. More importantly, it revealed what players can expect from their adventure to the Demon Realm. The trailer isn’t even a minute long, but it included enough hints to let players know it’ll focus on the first half of the 20-episode anime Dragon Ball Daima. In terms of characters, only Glorio, Shin, Panzy, and Goku (obviously) are featured. The minotaur Goku and Glorio spook in the show, and some Gendarmerie soldiers, also make an appearance. What’s perhaps most notable is what didn’t make the cut for the trailer — namely, all the cool stuff that happens in the second half of Daima, like Vegeta’s Super Saiyan 3 transformation and Goku’s new form, which I won’t spoil for you in case you’re waiting for the English dub to wrap up. Much like with Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero’s Daima DLC, it seems like the the content fans are most eager for won’t arrive until the game’s second Daima DLC arrives — whenever that is. No Tamagami showed up in the trailer, meaning Goku’s fight against Tamagami 3 may or may not be included in the first DLC. Interestingly, the trailer — posted to Bandai Namco’s American YouTube channel — includes Japanese voices, like the Daima characters in Sparking! Zero. It seems like the DLC will be released in Japanese, so hopefully an English dub arrives sooner rather than later, though there hasn’t been any official word yet. Dragon Ball Daima’s English dub is still releasing on Crunchyroll, and will be wrapped up a few weeks from now. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will also get a new physical edition that includes a download code for the Daima DLC, for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. It’ll be released on July 18 for $49.99. The trailer, as well as the box art, notes the Switch version will include A New Power Awakens, previously released DLC with content from early Dragon Ball Super like the Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue transformations for Goku and Vegeta, but it is not included in the PS5 version.

The next version of the PlayStation 5 Pro AI-powered PSSR upscaler will come with some significant improvements, according to rumors circulating online. In a new video shared on YouTube, Moore's Law is Dead, who previously provided correct information regarding the PlayStation 5 Pro and the PSSR upscaler before the official announcement, revealed that Sony is training a new lightweight neural network requiring less frame time to upscale that will offer higher image quality, no matter the base resolution a game is upscaled from. Currently, PSSR requires a base resolution of 864p, which is pretty high compared to the Ultra Performance NVIDIA DLSS option, for example, but the next iteration of the upscaler should be able to deliver better image quality upscaling from lower base resolutions. According to the leaker, one of the main reasons Sony is working on this new version of the PlayStation 5 Pro upscaler, which may not even be marketed as PSSR 2, because they want to get better at running 4K resolution at 120 FPS and offer 8K resolution output at 60 frames per second. While some games already offer 4K resolution at 120 FPS with the current version of PSSR, the new version of the upscaler will make it so that games that currently can't push past the 70, 80 FPS range can offer better performance besides the improved image quality, which will see improvements in line with the leap in quality from AMD FSR 2.0 to 3.1. Additionally, the new version of the upscaler will offer wider resolution offerings, supporting 1440p and 1080p resolutions at locked 120 FPS, which the current version of the upscaler doesn't, as it only used to offer 4K resolution output. Better image quality is reportedly also coming to PlayStation 5 Pro games that don't use PSSR to upscale with MFSR, which was the internal acronym for the upscaler. MFSR will be an alternative option to TAA to offer better image quality. With the current implementation of the PlayStation 5 Pro upscaler having been hit-and-miss so far, it's not surprising that Sony is working on a new iteration that will likely benefit the future console generation, considering the PlayStation 6 will likely support PSSR as well. Hopefully, it won't take long to see this new version of the upscaler in action and to know whether it will deliver all of these rumored promises. Deal of the Day

But what about once you’ve done that and are ready to stop reading about gaming and start doing it? What to play? Well, we have some recommendations. (If I’m ready to say goodbye?)Another weekend, another few days I will be playing Clair Obscur. Of all the pleasures and surprises of Expedition 33, one was particularly unexpected: It’s making me social! As I go out into the world and chat with people about games, this one keeps coming up. It seems, from my small sample size anyway, that this game is a rewarding nostalgia trip for us 30-somethings who grew up playing a ton of late-‘90s-era Final Fantasy and other JRPGs. In our last couple of entries of the Weekend Guide, I’d said that while I may have been enjoying other aspects of it, I wasn’t totally sold on the game’s story yet. Well folks, that’s changed. Clair Obscur has a fantastic plot and premise, but its characters are what really pushed me over. This is a crew of complex 30-somethings (well, 32-year-olds and one 16-year old, to be precise), pondering how they should respond to a crisis. Yeah, that’s pretty relatable right about now. Like in a good, classic Final Fantasy, these characters clearly need each other to get through the unexplainable journey they find themselves in. In that, the story also provides me with some headcanon-adjacent metaphors about getting older, relying on others, and living in fear of powers that loom over you. Stuff like this is why I’m a lifelong lover of Final Fantasy VIIVIII (IX also has these elements, of course, but I haven’t spent enough time with that one). So if you’re looking for something to play and have ignored my recommendations for Clair Obscur the past two weeks, maybe the third time’s the charm! Seriously. I enjoyed that game, but I really love this one. It’s third-person, a lot sillier, and it makes kicking the tiny little creatures who inhabit its perilous worlds all the more cruel. I’m not entirely convinced the sense of humor in its spoof ads is for me, but exploring ever-further around these bonkers planets with my ever-growing suite of abilities and weapons is such a satisfying experience. It’s a deckbuilding roguelike puzzle strategy game that mashes a minimalist city builder into the mold of Tetris. Tiles fall and you have to arrange them inside of a grid. Get a full line and instead of clearing away it will transform into part of a map, granting you resources from the corresponding terrain that appears. Cards, meanwhile, are placed to create buildings or to wage war against enemy units that eventually appear.It’s both kind of bonkers and surprisingly clever. Time is not really of the essence. Drop Duchy is a pretty chill game from what I’ve played so far. But the formula feels like a neat spin on tile-placing city builders like Dorfromantik. I wish it leaned a bit more into the frenetic urgency and planning of actual Tetris, but for now I’m enjoying myself enough to see if more playthroughs end up yielding deeper strategic tradeoffs in other parts of the game. — Ethan GachPrevious SlideNext Slide5 / 6List slidesBaldur’s Gate 3List slidesBaldur’s Gate 3Image: LarianPlay it on: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows PCs (Steam Deck OK)Current goal: Survive the ShadowlandsI gave Baldur’s Gate 3 the old college try back when it first came out but, while I admired much about it, the combat didn’t quite click with me, and I abandoned the attempt somewhere late in Act 2. Following the recent news that the game’s final major patch has now landed, though, I opted to give it another shot, starting fresh from the beginning, and it’s all going much better this time around. Something in my brain has shifted, and where the combat once often felt like a slog, I’m now enjoying making the most of my party members’ varied abilities to overcome the game’s many challenges. However, that doesn’t mean that things always go my way. I’ll avoid spoilers, but early in Act II, there was a battle which my party survived, but in which a number of innocents perished. I know it’s possible to handle the battle such that this doesn’t happen, and I thought long and hard about loading an earlier save and preventing this tragedy from occurring. Ultimately, though, I decided that the story is more interesting to me if I keep it pure, accepting the consequences of this failure, even if it means I miss out on some “content” later on, as no doubt some of the characters who died would have had more to do in the game’s third act if they’d survived. I think of it this way: if this were an actual tabletop RPG campaign I was playing and one battle wound up having dire consequences, I probably wouldn’t beg and plead with the DM to let me try the battle again from the start. That’s not really how D&D works; failure is interesting in its own way, and I think this tragedy should only make my party members hate the game’s main villain even more. Plus, this way I have an incentive to play the game again at some point in the future and keep all those characters alive. Part of what makes Baldur’s Gate 3 so impressive is the way that its story can flow in many different directions and accommodate the results of so many successes and failures.
