Another was purportedly ordered to delete a post on social media about how to continue working remotely at the company. One was allegedly told to stop talking about pay on internal messaging systems and warned that the tech giant was monitoring these discussions. And another, software engineer Cher Scarlett, was purportedly railroaded out of the company after creating an online pay survey for workers at the trillion-dollar company.Those claims form the basis of a federal government charge accusing the Cupertino iPhone giant of illegally interfering with, restraining and coercing employees exercising their rights under the National Labor Relations Act to help each other with workplace issues.Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the administrative complaint, filed Oct. 31 by the National Labor Relations Board.The legal action by Scarlett the former employee and the agency that enforces the Labor Relations Act also claims that Apple denied an employees request to create an internal-messaging channel about pay equity, telling the worker the messaging platform was only for business purposes despite letting other employees use it for non-business topics.Additionally, the complaint alleges, Apple told an employee not to speak to the press after they were quoted in the media about workplace issues.The worker who was ordered to remove the social-media post about remote work was also asked by a human resources representative to provide names of other Apple employees the person had talked with about working remotely, the complaint claims.A manager in a phone call told a worker that Apple did not want employees talking about wages or pay equity, the complaint alleges.The alleged incidents are purported to have happened in 2021.According to the complaint, Scarlett helped found Apple Too, modeled after the #MeToo movement against sexual violence, and intended to encourage Apple employees to share stories and create transparency around incidents of discrimination, inequity, racism and sexism they experienced in the course of their employment at Apple.In the summer of 2021, Scarlett created and posted online a pay-equity survey where Apple employees could anonymously share information about their compensation, job categories, experience and personal information in order to identify potential pay disparities. Scarlett posted the survey on her personal account on social media platform Twitter, now called X.The labor board and Scarlett argue in the complaint that she was forced to leave the company by its response to her work on behalf of her fellow Apple workers. She announced on Twitter in November 2021 that she was leaving the company; technology website The Verge reported that she had reached a settlement with Apple.Apple allegedly cracked down on other employees who took action in response to Scarletts advocacy. Apple demanded that one worker refrain from participating in the wage survey and was threatened with unspecified reprisals if they did, or if they continued to take part in wage discussions on the internal messaging platform, the complaint claims.An Apple human resources manager refused to meet collectively with Apple workers concerned about the results of the wage survey, and insisted on individual meetings, the complaint alleges.     You would have that the PS5 Pro's astronomically high price point might have had an impact on sales, but as it turns out, that's not the case.When the PS5 Pro was revealed back in September, I was honestly a bit gobsmacked at how expensive the thing was - $700? Are you having a laugh? I knew I wasn't going to get one anyway, especially because I just don't care enough about graphics or framerates and other such nonsense to justify such an expenditure, but I still thought that might put enough people off of picking one up. There's no concrete way to tell if more a huge amount more people would buy it if it was cheaper, but as shared by Genki_JPN on Twitter, Sony president Hiroki Totoki shared in a livestream following a recent investors call that the pricing hasn't had a "negative impact" on the console's sales.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "Hardcore users are the target of this hardware," Totoki said in the livestream. "In terms of the pricing many people made different comments on that, but pricing on PS5 Pro has not had a negative impact I don't think." Of course, it's still early days, as the console literally only just came out. Interestingly enough, it's not actually that difficult to get one. In fact it's so easy to get one that scalpers are reportedly having to sell units they picked up at a loss in some cases, which is quite nice because I always like to see scalpers making utter fools of themselves. Mostly the fact it's in stock is interesting because the PS5 was infamously difficult to buy in its early years, but demand for the Pro was never going to be as high anyway. That's not a bad recipe by any means, but it's certainly one predestined not to leave a mark. That said, the reality is that, as good as it turned out to be, this Metal Slug spinoff is a niche release and won't have much of an impact when all is said and done. Yet it tries really hard regardless to please its target audience with fresh twists on the tactical turn-based strategy formula and never takes the easy route.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Leikir Studio's post-Synergy early access game seems straightforward on the surface. You've got the classic isometric view, the tiles, the perfect military-themed lore for yet another take on the tactics subgenre. It looked like an easy win from the get-go, and the sharply pixeled visuals perfectly adapted that unmistakable Metal Slug aesthetic. Lesser developers would've just rolled with the basics and leaned hard on the iconic audiovisual presentation. But this ain't an uninspired project. Quite the opposite.Mind you, Metal Slug Tactics could've used some more time in the oven. Bugs plague some combat encounters, and the UI can get messy and opaque at times, not really letting you know whether a squad member will get cooked next turn or not. As clear and easy-to-grasp as its moment-to-moment mechanics and larger systems are, mayhap this roguelite turn-based game (yes, didn't you know?) could've used a bit more testing on that front. All this is an easily fixable and minor annoyance once you fully realize with how awesome everything else is though. Image credit: Dotemu, Gamera GamesThe game's first big win comes when the adequately thin tutorial highlights that Metal Slug Tactics is all about movement instead of turtling or finding the perfect position to attack and defend from, instantly turning most of the subgenre on its head. Sure, your characters (each with a distinct set of abilities and strengths) often need straight lines to land their shots and hits, but you'll have to balance that with their need to move around the battlefield.You see, skills are 'fueled' by adrenaline, and you earn that by moving them around as much as possible each turn, never staying put in one place. Even the characters will get annoyed when they're not running around enough. It's all Metal Slug-y like that; standing still was a quick way to get one-shotted in the difficult mainline 2D action game series. It's a simple yet game-defining decision that makes very good use of the IP and how it's behaved for decades elsewhere. Somehow, we don't see this happening too often when developers are invited into someone else's sandbox. Image credit: Dotemu, Gamera GamesIn the same way that Fire Emblem always was a perfect fit for the Musou genre, Metal Slug's own setting and history always felt tailor-made for a solid tactics game. It's finally arrived, but thankfully, it's not a cheap cash-in. Even before getting into the actual battles (which can even turn into hasty escape missions due to some objectives), the world maps themselves and the small cutscene that takes the characters into the region overtaken by bad guys are brimming with charm that goes beyond getting the previously established art style right.Gameplay twists go beyond the aforementioned adrenaline system and the need to scrounge for ammo ahead of boss fights if you've pulled the trigger of your big guns too much. Mummies (for example) turn the heroes into mummies in the same way they did in the original games. Far from a curse, this status only switches things up. Mummies suck at taking cover and moving quickly around, but deal massive damage with two different attack options. What could've been an annoyance or something to fear (like those bugs in XCOM) becomes a wrinkle that can be turned against the attackers themselves. It's great stuff. Same applies to the titular metal slugs and other vehicles but in the opposite direction: They can be of great help, but also vulnerable in different ways. Image credit: Dotemu, Gamera GamesThere are more examples of the devs looking at what they were working with and picking the right Metal Slug element for the right game design idea, but spoiling everything would be a disservice to this little banger. It's a thoughtful rework of everything that makes Metal Slug so good, and the fact it's actually a highly replayable roguelite (cool unlocks and extra-punishing difficulty levels included) only makes it even better and more appealing to today's mainstream crowd, so it's a bit of a head-scratcher that marketing didn't lean harder on that.Maybe the fact it comes out swinging so hard with its own ideas and little quirks makes me a bit sad that it doesn't have a bigger scope to adapt more of Metal Slug's zanier bits, such as those irksome aliens and truly wonderful settings in later entries over outdated Middle East and 'jungle native' cliches. Who knows, maybe it'll get juicy DLCs down the line. Personally, I think everyone involved (don't forget Dotemu's efforts reviving old properties) nailed it so hard that Metal Slug Tactics could become a subseries rather than a one-off experiment, which is why I need you to buy/play it ASAP.Metal Slug Tactics is now available on PC, Xbox consoles, PS4/5, and Nintendo Switch. It's also part of Game Pass' November offerings on both consoles and PC.

However, the platform is seemingly preparing to open up the chatbot to free users.Over the weekend, several app researchers and users posted about a free version of Grok being made available to people in certain regions.TechCrunch was able to confirm that X is at least testing access to Grok for free users in New Zealand. Late last month, the company also gave the model the ability to understand images.All these features were available only to Premium and Premium+ users until now. By opening up Grok to free users, xAI is possibly looking for a more significant userbase and faster feedback cycle for its products, so that it can better compete with other models on the market like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.Last month, The Wall Street Journal reported that xAI was in talks to raise several billion dollars at a valuation of $40 billion.

    India, the worlds most populous country and the second-largest internet market after China, is becoming increasingly digitally active. However, this rapid digitization comes with a growing risk of online fraud.Cyber fraud is mounting in India to the point where the Indian government estimates it could amount to 0.7% of the countrys GDP over $14 billion within the next year. Even the government-backed systems, including Aadhaar, have been targeted by bad actors in some cases.New Delhi keeps introducing new regulatory requirements to limit fraudulent digital transactions. Nonetheless, these updates often place a burden on businesses to regularly update their tech. Efforts to eradicate digital fraud sometimes also result in disruptions. For instance, the recent clampdown on unauthorized use of the permanent account number disrupted transactions for some fintech platforms.Equal, a Hyderabad-based startup, aims to address all this with its suite of identity verification and financial data-sharing products.The two-year-old startup helps businesses streamline know-your-customer (KYC) requirements, fraud prevention, and regulatory compliance by integrating more than 50 identity databases and thousands of API providers. The startup also recently acquired an undisclosed stake in account aggregator OneMoney to combine its identity verification services with the latters consent-based financial data sharing.Data sharing is still a major problem in this country if its not done digitally with consent, Keshav Reddy, the son of GVK Groups vice chairman GV Sanjay Reddy, told TechCrunch.Reddy founded Equal with former Swiggy engineering director Rajeev Ranjan after moving back to India from the U.S.For over the last two years, Reddy bootstrapped Equal, and the startup has added more than 350 customers, including State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Reliance Jio, Airtel, Uber, and Zoom.The startup has now raised a Series A round of $10 million at a post-money valuation of $80 million to scale its operations, expand the product suite, and forge strategic partnerships. The round was led by Prosus Ventures, along with Tomales Bay Capital and Reddy himself, and saw participation from other investors, including Blume Ventures, DST Global, Gruhas VC, and Quona VC.Equal is not alone in the space, as the market already has players such as Perfios (backed by Warburg Pincus and Teachers Venture Growth), IDfy (backed by TransUnion), and Bureau (backed by GMO VenturePartners). However, Reddy told TechCrunch that unlike the competition, Equal plays the role of an aggregator and partners even with some of its competitors.Ravi Kumar, co-founder and CEO of Upstox, who has also invested in Equals maiden round and is one of the early customers for its identity verification and account aggregator, told TechCrunch that its the cost and uptime that gives the trading platform a reason not to look for building a similar tech in-house.Upstox has been using Equal for about a year and is processing around 350,000 transactions a month. Before that, Kumar said, the platform was relying on existing ID-verification providers.Equal has been able to aggregate across a slew of different APIs and ensures very high uptime between all those different connections, he said.
