HistoryA Fascinating Collection of Hungarian Sign Painting Photos, 19061976Women feature prominently in these archival images of signs and sign painters at work in Hungary.Better LettersNov 7, 2024 5 min readOutlining with a mahl stick as a straight edge in Hungary, 1976. Photo: Fortepan / FFOT.Tom Koch is currently working on a museum project for the Austrian city of Eisenstadt, which will include a permanent sign painting exhibit. To give context to some of the objects, he asked if I had any archival photos of sign painters at work. In addition to various 'Ye Olde Sign Shoppe' posts, I shared some other pictures from my collection, including this one from Hungary in 1965.Photo: Fortepan / UVATERV (97080).I can't recall where I got the photo, but Tom quickly tracked down its original source in the brilliant Fortepan photographic archive. Searching within this, he then unearthed even more archival sign and sign painting photos from Hungary. The pictures span a period of 70 yearsfrom 1906 to 1976and show work in progress on a variety of different sign types. One thing that immediately struck me was how prominently women sign painters feature among the photos, and I wondered why. It turns out that the majority of them were taken during Hungary's Communist era, which Wikipedia describes as a time when women had "greater access to secondary and university education, especially in technical fields" and were "included in the workforce in a more equal way". These images bear that out, and buck the trend of most archival sign painting photos that I've seen to date. The following are presented in reverse chronological order for your enjoyment, and thank you Tom for sharing this wonderful collection.1970sThis series of six photos were all taken in the same sign shop in 1976, but there are no details of its name or location.Photos: Fortepan / FFOT.Here are some closer crops.Photos: Fortepan / FFOT (207023).Photos: Fortepan / FFOT (207022).Photos: Fortepan / FFOT (207020).Livery work in progress at the IKARUS bus factory in Budapest, 1976.Photo: Fortepan / UVATERV (99391).Bareback brushwork, 1976.Photo: Fortepan / FFOT (207025).Publicity for a jazz festival in Cegld, 1970.Photo: Fortepan / Pterffy Istvn (142627).A closer look at some of those letters.Photo: Fortepan / Pterffy Istvn (142627).1960sAdding a shade to some transom lettering in Gyr, 1966.Photo: Fortepan / Kriss Gza (191969).Photo: Fortepan / Kriss Gza (191969).Heraldry practise at an art college in Pcs, 1963.Photo: Fortepan / Hunyady Jzsef (107131).Mural signs in Budapest, 1961.Photo: Fortepan / Mra Andrs (114992).Father and son? 1960.Photo: Fortepan / Rcz Vekerdi Gyuln (250188).1950sTank insignia from Budapest in 1956, the year of the Hungarian Revolution.Photo: Fortepan / Kurutz Mrton (12337).Kcs village in 1953. The Parisian artist carves intricate forests and stately architecture subsumed by vines and craggy cliffs all from humble cardboard, accentuating the corrugated textures to add depth and intrigue. In her Chicago debut at Mariane Ibrahim, Jospin presents a series of freestanding sculptures and wall works that invite the viewer to venture into her large-scale, yet incredibly intricate worlds. Titled Vanishing Points, the exhibition gestures toward perspective and the ways subtle details and contemplation can shift how we see. Fort troglodyte (2024), wood, cardboard, and mixed media, 72 1/2 x 59 x 31 1/2 inchesAs with earlier bodies of work, Jospins paper sculptures and vivid, silk tapestries draw on classical styles and the 18th-century tradition of follies, architectural structures designed for decoration. These often ornate buildings could be found in many Baroque gardens, which took human mastery over nature as an imperative. The artists works instead depict a convergence between the manufactured and the organic. In the six-foot tall Fort troglodyte, for example, vines crawl down from a ceiling embedded with shells and sea sponges. The exquisite vault stands parallel to a similarly shaped cavern, occupied by trees rising from a rugged bluff.Jospin walks viewers through her process and studio in the video below. • I can't recommend this rugged power station enough to drone users -- now with $340 off for Black Friday!
    www.zdnet.com
The DJI Power 1000 power station in action. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNETWhat's the deal? There's currently a $340 coupon on Amazon for the DJI Power 1000 power station.ZDNET's key takeawaysThe DJI Power 1000 power station is available on Amazon for $799 on Amazon. It's a powerful, premium quality power station that's built to satisfy the needs of professional drone pilots.Unfortunately, there's no storage compartment for the SDC accessory cables, nor is there a built-in 12V car adapter port.I've tested dozens of power stations over the past year, but there was one that really piqued my interest from the moment I first heard about it. DJI, a leader in bothdronesandaction cameras, has used its expertise in battery technology to enter the competitive world of portable power stations. And the company made a dramatic entrance into this market with its first offering -- the Power 1000.Also:The best drones you can buy: Expert testedFor the past week, I've been testing the Power 1000, the bigger of the two power stations released by DJI earlier this month. It's one of -- if not the first -- power station on the market that is specifically designed to meet the needs of professional drone pilots.DJI Power 1000 tech specsBattery Capacity: 1024WhCell Chemistry: LFP (lithium ferrophosphate)Cycle Life: Maintains over 70% capacity after 4000 cycles.Ports:2x AC Output, 2x USB-C, 2x USB-A, SDC, SDC Lite, AC InputAC Output:AC 100-120 V, 50/60Hz, max continuous output: 2200W, AC 220-240 V, 50/60Hz, max continuous output: 2200W, max output: 2400W (total)AC Output (Bypass Mode):AC 100-120 V, 12 A, 1440 W, AC 220-240 V, 10 A, 2200WUSB-A Output:5V, 3A, 9V, 2A, 12V, 2A, Max output power per channel: 24WUSBC Output:5V, 5A, 9V, 5A, 12V, 5A, 15V, 5A, 20V, 5A, 28V, 5A (EPR), Max output power per channel: 140WSDC and SDC Lite Output:SDC: 9-27 V, max current: 10A, max output power: 240W, SDC Lite: 9-27V, max current: 10A, max output power: 240WNet Weight: Approx. 13 kgDimensions: 448 225 230 mm Note: The product featured in this review was tested with UK sockets.I've tested numerous power stations in the 1,000Wh range, and the size and weight of the Power 1000 align with my expectations. However, one aspect that stood out immediately to me was its solid construction: The outer shell is tough, effectively resisting knocks and bumps without flexing or bowing, which is what a power station like this something that's been built to take out and about -- really needs. Also: This handheld power bank is powerful enough to jump-start your carThe "ammo crate" style handles facilitate easy movement, whether with one hand or two, and they are smooth and comfortable to grip, which is definitely an advantage since this unit is a significantly weighty bit of kit. The Power 1000 is built tough. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNETThe interface of the Power 1000 is refreshingly simple, featuring just a few buttons and switches along with an LCD. It avoids the confusion of tiny, difficult-to-identify "mystery meat" buttons or the need to rely on an app for essential functions.I particularly appreciate the lack of app dependency for controlling the power station, although connecting the unit to a computer for firmware updates can be somewhat cumbersome. The LED display seems to be a quality, custom part -- a welcome deviation from the lower-quality panels I've seen used by many other power station manufacturers. It remains clear even in bright sunlight, offering an uncluttered view that makes it easy to quickly take in all the important information on display. The ports are sensible: you have two AC outlets, two USB-C ports supporting 24W output, and a pair of USB-C ports that can deliver a full 240W. A sensible selection of ports. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNETI appreciate the solid port covers on the AC inlet and the DC ports of the Power 1000. They're robust and don't seem likely to rip or fall off easily, unlike some others I've seen. However, it's a bit surprising that DJI chose to cover these ports while leaving the AC sockets and USB ports exposed. Ideally, all ports would have covers to provide some level of protection from dirt and moisture, enhancing the unit's durability and functionality in inclement environments. Also: The best portable power stations of 2024: Expert testedI carried out my usual barrage of tests on the Power 1000, which included verifying the unit's battery capacity and charge times, checking if the ports deliver their rated power, and testing how the AC outlets handle being overloaded. The Power 1000 passed all tests successfully. Port covers on the Power 1000 are robust. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNETCharge times for the Power 1000 are around 70 to 75 minutes in fast-charge mode and about 130 minutes in standard mode. While the fast-charge option is convenient if you're in a hurry, using standard mode is generally recommended. This slower charging pace puts less stress on the batteries, potentially extending their lifespan. And under severe overloading, the unit simply shuts off without any adverse effects, which is a reassuring safety feature. In use, the Power 1000 is quiet, with the cooling fan only kicking in when needed, and even then not being all that noticeable, which is handy when using the power station indoors. Overloading the Power 1000 with a kettle. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNETThe unit also supports solar charging, but this requires a separate solar power adapter module, and as I was not sent one for testing, I can't comment on this. However, I do like this idea of not having to pay for the solar charging module if you won't ever need solar charging, as this keeps the price down. Also: I found the most powerful robot vacuum on the market, and it's cheaper than you'd thinkThe SDC ports on the Power 1000, designed specifically for fast-charging DJI drone batteries, are indeed a thoughtful and useful addition for drone pilots. Each port can be used to charge one battery at a time, which works efficiently if you consistently recharge your batteries immediately after use, rather than waiting until you have a pile of them. However, to charge your drone batteries you will need bespoke cables, which are sold separately, adding to the cost. There are cables for the Air 3, Mavic 3, Matrice 30, and Inspire 3 drones. My workaround for cable storage! Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNETIt's also slightly inconvenient that there is no storage space for these cables on the unit. As a workaround, I've taken to tying them around the handles of the Power 1000, which, while effective, isn't the most elegant solution. This is one aspect that could be improved for better user convenience. There are also cables to transform the SDC ports to a 12 V car adapter outlet and XT60 port.ZDNET's buying adviceI was impressed with the DJI Power 1000. It has all the features you'd expect from a general mid-sized unit, but with the added functionality that it's been built with drone pilots in mind. The 1000Wh capacity is about the limit of what you want to lug about, and it has enough ports to distribute this power in a sensible way. I've seen power stations absolutely festooned with ports, but two AC, USB-A, and USB-C ports, along with the SBC and SBC Lite ports, is a sensible loadout. The Power 1000 is priced at $959, which aligns with similar units on the market. And for now, you can get $400 on Amazon simply by clicking on the coupon.Featured reviews

  • T-Mobile Hack Linked To Chinese State Sponsored Hackers
    www.forbes.com
T-Mobile was hacked by Chinese state sponsored hackers 'Salt Typhoon."Copyright 2011 AP. All rights reserved.T-Mobile is the latest telecommunications company to report being impacted by a large-scale cyber-espionage campaign linked to Chinese state-sponsored hackers. While T-Mobile has stated that customer data and critical systems have not been significantly affected, the breach is part of a broader attack on major telecom providers, raising concerns about the security of critical communications infrastructure across the industry.Details of the Data BreachThe campaign, attributed to a hacking group known as Salt Typhoon, also referred to as Earth Estries or Ghost Emperor, targeted the wiretap systems telecom companies are required to maintain for law enforcement purposes, as the WSJ Reports. These systems are essential for facilitating government mandated surveillance and are a crucial part of telecom infrastructure.According to federal agencies, including the FBI and CISA, the hackers successfully accessed:Call records of specific customers.Private communications of targeted individuals.Information about law enforcement surveillance requests. The breach appears to have focused on sensitive communications involving high-ranking U.S. national security and policy officials. This suggests a deliberate effort to gather intelligence on key figures, posing potential risks to national security.MORE FOR YOUOnly Part Of An Industry Wide CampaignT-Mobiles disclosure is one part of a broader effort by federal agencies to track and contain the impact of the Salt Typhoon campaign. Other major U.S. telecom providers, including AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen Technologies, have also reported being affected. The attack highlights vulnerabilities across the telecommunications sector, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to strengthen security measures. As telecom providers handle sensitive communications for governments, businesses, and individuals, they are increasingly targeted by state-sponsored actors seeking valuable intelligence.T-Mobiles Cybersecurity ResponseT-Mobile has emphasized that it is actively monitoring the situation and working closely with federal authorities to investigate the breach. The company maintains that, to date, there is no evidence of a significant impact on customer data or the broader functionality of its systems. In a statement to Reuters, a T-Mobile company spokesperson said, T-Mobile is closely monitoring this industry-wide attack, and at this time, T-Mobile systems and data have not been impacted in any significant way, and we have no evidence of impacts to customer information."This latest incident comes at a time when T-Mobile has been enhancing its cybersecurity practices. Earlier this year, the company resolved a $31.5 million settlement with the FCC related to prior breaches, half of which was dedicated to improving security infrastructure. As part of its commitments, T-Mobile has been implementing measures such as:Phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication.Zero-trust architecture to minimize access vulnerabilities.Network segmentation to contain potential breaches.Data minimization to reduce the amount of sensitive information stored.Telecommunications as Critical InfrastructureThe T-Mobile breach highlights the unique challenges facing the telecommunications industry, which is classified as critical infrastructure under federal law. Telecommunications companies are the backbone of global communication, enabling everything from emergency services and government operations to business transactions and personal connectivity. As such, these networks are prime targets for state-sponsored cyber campaigns that seek to exploit their role in facilitating sensitive communications. This incident demonstrates a troubling shift in cyber-espionage tactics. By targeting wiretap systems and sensitive communications, attackers like Salt Typhoon aim not just to steal data but to compromise the integrity of systems critical to national security.T-Mobile has been contacted for comment and have not yet responded.

  • What You Should Know About Ovarian Cancer Vaccines
    www.forbes.com
Researcher holding vaccine Copyright 2021 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. There are no routine screenings for ovarian cancer for women. Yes, ovarian cancer is rare, representing 1% of new cancer diagnoses every year in the U.S. But, its a serious disease as only half of the nearly 20,000 women diagnosed each year survive past 5 years. Thats quite low as compared with breast cancer, where the 5-year survival rate is over 90%.Scientists at Cancer Research UK were recently awarded 600,000 to develop the first ovarian cancer vaccine, called OvarianVax. Medical oncologist and immunologist Dr. Matthew Block from the Mayo Clinic is working to develop an ovarian cancer vaccine using engineered white blood cells from patients with ovarian cancer. The vaccine will target a protein called folate receptor alpha that is associated with ovarian cancer.Dr Block shared, One way in which the two vaccines differ is in their intended patient populations. The vaccine developed at Mayo Clinic is being used in patients who already have ovarian cancer; both as a means to prevent ovarian cancer recurrence for patients in remission from cancer (secondary prevention), as well as in a regimen treating active ovarian cancer. In contrast, the UK vaccine, while it will first be tested in ovarian cancer patients, is being developed primarily to prevent ovarian cancer from developing in patients who are at risk for the disease but have never had it (primary prevention).Dr Block explained that the commercially available human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, Gardasil 9 prevents cancer by preventing long-term infection with cancer-causing HPV strains. He explained, Since ovarian cancer is not known to be caused by a virus, ovarian cancer vaccines target proteins expressed by the tumor cells rather than viral proteins. Similar to the commercially available HPV vaccine, the UK ovarian cancer vaccine is designed to be used in patients who do not have cancer, with the researchers looking to see if the risk of cancer will be substantially reduced.Dr Melissa Frey, gynecologic oncologist and Director of the Genetics and Personalized Cancer Prevention Program at Weill Cornell Medicine, explains that there are currently no reliable methods to screen for ovarian cancer. For women who are higher risk for ovarian cancer, for example women with BRCA1/2 mutation or Lynch syndrome, some physicians recommend transvaginal (pelvic) ultrasound and a CA-125 blood test.MORE FOR YOUDr Frey shared, These tests may result in increased detection of early stage ovarian cancer, versus late stage ovarian cancers. However, these tests are not included on National Comprehensive Cancer Network guideline recommendations for women with hereditary ovarian cancer predisposition and large clinical trials suggest that these tests do not translate into improved survival for people found to have ovarian cancer. Dr Frey explained that there are several groups working on cancer vaccines and there are open clinical trials with this goal, however, we remain several years away from an FDA- approved vaccine for this indication.

  • President Trump to Remove Capital Gains Tax from Certain US Cryptocurrencies
    techreport.com
Key TakeawaysA new report suggests that Trump might remove capital gains taxes on US-issued crypto tokens. This would mean that investors will no longer have to pay taxes on the profit they make from trading in crypto. However, this offer is only applicable to companies registered in the US. If non-US companies want to benefit from it, they should relocate to the US.Donald Trump is reportedly planning to eliminate the 37% capital gains taxes on U.S.-issued cryptocurrencies. This would mean that US investors will no longer have to pay any taxes on the profit they make from certain cryptocurrencies.Currently, the worst part about this tax scheme is that users also have to pay a tax for using crypto in their daily life, such as for buying clothes or shopping online.A Trump Transition Team member added that this would only apply to companies that registered in the US before the token was issued. However, its not a problem even if the company is a non-US one, as it can still manage to benefit from this offer by relocating to the US.However, even in that case, i.e., if a company relocates to the US, only those tokens that have been issued after the relocation will be tax-free.Its worth noting that while campaigning, Trump had promised to make considerable changes in the crypto market of the US. In his own words, he wants the country to become the crypto capital of the world. And it looks like hes going to keep his word. This is also why the crypto market is booming since Trumps victory, with Bitcoin reaching all time highs. Whats more, veteran trader Peter Brandt foresees Bitcoin hitting $327K.Implications of This Policy ChangeIf this tax policy is actually implemented, the outcome will be huge for the US. It could lead to a significant change in investment strategy as investors will start to prefer domestically-issued tokens over foreign assets.Tax exemption will benefit the companies as much as it will benefit the investors, so foreign entities might be tempted to move to the US because not many countries offer tax exemption on digital assets. In fact, as per reports, Italy might be planning to increase taxation from 26% to 42% from 2025. This might push a lot of Italian crypto firms to move their base to the US, which in turn will strengthen the USs crypto market and boost its economy. Some crypto experts also believe that this move will encourage certain US states to introduce new legislation supporting Strategic Bitcoin Reserve a stock of digital assets held by the government to be used in emergencies.Such a reserve can give the US an advantage over its rivals and protect it from economic instability. If this really does happen, the US wont be the only country to do that, seeing as at least 5 other countries are also contemplating imposing a national Bitcoin reserve. Its Not EasyHow successful Trumps attempt at making cryptocurrency tax-free will be remains a huge question, though. After all, at the end of the day, cryptocurrencies are also currencies and theres no solid argument (apart from tax exemption being an incentive for investors) for making it tax-free.In fact, some staunch opposers argue that it should be taxed more heavily considering how energy-intensive it is.Let me explain: the cost of creating fiat currency is minimal. However, creating new cryptocurrency tokens requires a lot of energy and computing power, which has a significant impact on the environment. So, if anything, these digital assets should be taxed more to make up for the damages they cause. Nevertheless, Trump has breathed new life into the crypto currency market, but the coming weeks will reveal just how serious the new US President is about revolutionizing the US crypto scene.Add Techreport to Your Google News Feed Get the latest updates, trends, and insights delivered straight to your fingertips. • X Rival Bluesky Gains 1.25 Million New Users in Just a Week After Trumps Victory
    techreport.com
Key TakeawaysMicro-blogging startup Bluesky, which is also a rival of X, has gained 1.25 million new users in just a week. After the results of the US presidential election came out, a lot of X users left the platform because Musk is a staunch supporter of Trump. These users then joined Bluesky and Metas Threads, another X rival.Xs newest rival Bluesky has gained more than 1.25 million users over the last week, pushing it to the #1 spot on the Apple App Stores US chart this week. Its closely followed by Metas Threads, which is at #2, while X is far away at the 27th rank.Almost 100,000 new users have been joining the platform every day since the US elections. Most of the new users that have joined the platform in the past week are from the US, Canada, and the UK.Were excited to welcome everyone looking for a better social media experience, Jay Graber, CEO of Bluesky, said. What Caused This Shift? Its believed that this sudden surge in the user base of Bluesky (and Threads) is a direct result of the mass exodus from X following the results of the US presidential election. Its no secret that Elon Musk is a huge supporter of Trump. In fact, to reward him for his relentless support, Trump recently announced that Musk will be co-leading the newly formed D.O.G.E. (Department of Government Efficiency) alongside Vivek Ramaswamy. However, Trumps extremist policies have earned him a significant number of haters, too. And these people dont want to be on a platform (i.e. X) that has been used to campaign for him.Its appalling that Elon Musk has transformed Twitter into a Trump propaganda machine, rife with disinformation and misinformation, a user said in a post on Bluesky. Therefore, just a day after the election, 115,000 US users left the platform. This is the highest number of single-day exits the platform has witnessed in the entirety of Musks tenure.Things went further south for X when prominent journalists such as the New York Times Mara Gay and the Atlantics Charlie Warzel announced their departure from the platform, too. UK newspaper The Guardian also said that it would no longer post on X because it is a toxic platform. When such popular and well-respected names express their concerns against a platform like X which is already controversial, by the way its natural for other users to reconsider their choices, too. Now, almost everyone is aware of Threads, given that it has been a rival of X for a long time. However, Bluesky is relatively new to the scene. It was created in 2019 as an internal project within Twitter when Jack Dorsay was still the CEO. Then, it was officially launched in February 2024 and has since managed to garner 15.2 million users.Ive tried it out first-hand and it looks and feels very similar to X in terms of its design and interface. However, its yet to show any ads and develop a business model. All in all, its still early days for Bluesky.Speaking of its user base, this is the second time it has witnessed a massive surge in its user base within a short span. The first time happened in September when shortly after Brazil banned X for not complying with the local laws, Bluesky gained 2 million new users. However, Bluesky still has a long way to go. Its 15.2 million users is minuscule compared to the number of users on Threads (275 million monthly users), let alone X (600 monthly users).Add Techreport to Your Google News Feed Get the latest updates, trends, and insights delivered straight to your fingertips.
