For this years Christmas special, Joy to the World, writer Steven Moffat plans to put a unique twist on the concept.Imagine that a hotel chain got hold of the idea of time travel, Moffat revealed to BBC South East in a recent interview (via Total Film). Whats the first thing a hotel would do if they had time travel? Theyd realize they have an opportunity to sell all the unsold nights in their old hotels [throughout] history.Fans already saw a bit of that hotels function in a teaser released back in July. The short begins with Ncuti Gatwas Fourteenth Doctor popping into various visitor spaces throughout space and time, offering a ham and cheese toastie and a pumpkin latte. Halfway through, we meet Joy, a kind but lonely young woman played by Nicola Coughlan. As soon as Joy gets into her room, shes interrupted, first by a Silurian in a business suit and then by the Doctor, once again bringing breakfast.Moffats explanation helps us better understand whats happening in that teaser. The Doctor is investigating the hotel chain, going through its various rooms and looking for a person who can help, a person who loves ham and cheese toasties and pumpkin spice lattes.The meal is a classic Moffat tautology, in which wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff puts the effect before the cause. One of the most delightful versions occurred in The Big Bang, in which the Doctor slakes his thirst with a drink he steals from the past, which makes him parched in the first place. Then theres the River Song plot throughout Moffats episodes, in which we meet the Doctors wife as a woman moving backwards through time and eventually learn that shes the daughter of Amy Pond. But the best might be from Moffats first episode Blink, where the Doctor communicates to Carey Mulligans Sally Sparrow through a message distributed across VHS tapes.While these types of episode were common under Russell T Daviess first tenure as showrunner, which was followed by Moffat in charge for seven years, they more or less fell away after Chris Chibnall took over in 2018. But with Davies back for a few more seasons, Moffats style of Doctor Who adventure has a home once again.In fact, they work particularly well within the series current overarching mystery, which began with last years Christmas special, The Church on Ruby Road. Instead, like most Christmas specials, it will let the Doctor run around with another special companion. Ken Fulk may be one of the worlds most in-demand designers, but hes really more of a cinematographer, with his genre-bending amalgams of glam rock and Tudor; out-to-sea and down-to-earth; and Howard Hughes and hacienda across countless interior projects. Rooms, as he likes to say, take shape like movies in his head.Fulks latest blockbuster? A brick-and-mortar store opening today in Los Angeles, whose script goes a little something like this: I was inspired by Bunny Mellon, thinking that she had kept a little tucked-away bungalowmaybe in the Kennedy erasecretly in Hollywood, the designer tells us. Translation? Interior design heaven.Douglas FriedmanYou can find the Ken Fulk store tucked into a squat building at 555 Norwich Drive (conveniently across the street from the Pacific Design Center), shielded by hedges and painted in an eye-catching pea-green with trompe loeil stonework. It has almost a secret feeling, Fulk tells us.I was inspired by Bunny Mellon, thinking that she had kept a little tucked-away bungalow.Its a secret that wont be safe for long. Beginning Friday, visitors can shop Fulks magical universe, from vintage furniture thats been lovingly reupholsterered (or Fulked up, as the designer says) to dandy-ish prints in tramp art wood frames to all the accouterments needed for a fabulous Fulked-up dinner party.Douglas FriedmanThen theres custom things that weve madecustom candles and pillows, adds Fulk. All of our studios tend to feel more like fabulous lofts or apartmentsnot like a workplace.I really wanted it to feel like a home. That residential sensibility permeates virtually every nook of the store, for which decorative artists created elegant trompe loeil drapery and where timber case goods overflow with cushions and textiles. The message? You may not be able to afford a full Ken Fulk home makeover, but you can live the fantasy by dropping by the store and by bringing a piece home for yourself.We [design for a] rarefied few, says Fulk, whose clients range from Instagram founder Kevin Systrom to Vice President Kamala Harris. Fulk credits this venture to his companys CFO, retail veteran Dave DeMattei.
