The Josiah Quincy Community School and Community Center is one of the finest examples of Brutalist architecture in Boston. The building, completed in 1976 by The Architects Collaborative (TAC), is in Chinatown perched above a sunken expressway, the treacherous Mass Pike. It featured prominently in a 2021 retrospective curated by Gabriel Cira, James Heard, and Emma Pfeiffer at Pinkcomma Gallery and MIT about TAC. Across the street from TACs masterpiece now stands an extension to the Josiah Quincy School by HMFH Architects, a Cambridge, Massachusetts office. The Josiah Quincy Upper School opened its doors to students this fall. The site HMFH negotiated was a slender one, given Chinatowns hyper-density, so the architects responded with a dynamic high-rise building on a plot thats less than one acre.If you think about a school as the physical embodiment of all the talent, imagination, and possibility of the young people it servesthat is this building! Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said in a statement after the opening.The facade that edges I-90 is mostly made of brick, but its windows have polychromatic casings. Thus, the new building serves both students and the local community. Toward that end, it has a 435-seat auditorium, a black box theater, gymnasium, and media center. The cafeteria is sited underneath a multi-story atria with a mural that evokes the rich culture of the surrounding Chinatown neighborhood, the architects said.The building serves both school and community functions. The building was oriented so that classrooms face north and south for optimal daylighting. The Upper Schools mascot is a phoenix, and the elementary schools logo is a dragon. Both a dragon and a phoenix appear in a mural overlooking the cafeteria, exchanging pearls of wisdom as they dance above the two schools, symbolizing harmony, balance, and prosperity. A 16,000-square-foot rooftop green space invites students to relax and take in panoramic views of Boston. From October 31 to November 2 in Bogot and Tenjo, Colombia, I joined a group of artists, activists, architects, and curators, among other guests, at the Architectures of Planetary Well-Being biannual symposium. The event was organizedfree and open to the publicby re:arc institute, a Copenhagen-based architectural nonprofit. For the past three years, it has been working to enable climate action by funding site-specific projects and radical pedagogies around architecture.This conference was centered around the Andean concept of buen vivir (well-being), which honors the interdependence of species with their land and reclaims Indigenous identity and territory. The first two days were hosted at the cultural center Casa Lolita in Bogot, and the third took place in Tenjo, a town on the Bogot savanna east of the Andes, at Fundacin Organizmo, an education center led by architect Ana Mara Gutirrez that is focused on low-impact building techniques, intercultural knowledge, and ecological restoration. Day one began with an awareness of our bodies among flower altars and viche, an ancestral drink made by Afro-Colombian women from the Pacific Coast. Following this ritual, equity-based journalist Sher Herrera moderated a conversation on the non-western concepts of ubuntu (I am because we are, in South African philosophy) and buen vivir, with Black rights activist Marilyn Machado Mosquera and Catherine Dunga, cofounder of the nonprofit African art organization Kitambo.The first two days were hosted at the cultural center Casa Lolita in Bogot. Brazilian architect Gabriela de Matos spoke of quilomboswhere enslaved people once retreated toas Afro-Brazilian places of resistance and knowledge for contemporary architecture models; Oasis Urbano highlighted the self-built neighborhood of Moravia, rooted on a former landfill in Medelln; and Island City Lab described themselves as observers working in solidarity with the Cassava Piece community in Kingston, Jamaica, particularly on self-organized waste management systems.Brazilian architect Gabriela de Matos spoke about quilombos as Afro-Brazilian places of resistance and knowledge for contemporary architecture models. In Colombia, as in most of Latin America, the average life expectancy for trans women is 35 years. Red Comunitaria Trans, a group of sex workers recently expelled from the streets of Bogots Santa Fe neighborhood where they lived, shared how they relocated to the countryside to build a communal home where they live without fear and age gracefully with their sisters. And Comunal, an architectural practice based in Mexico, is helping rural communities continue to build through mutual aid and according to ancestral knowledge. They listen to each groups needs, from infancy to old age, and provide aid in urgent infrastructure like safe birthing houses built with and for the community. These outcomes take long periods of observation and learning, something re:arc, backed by the Interogo Foundation, has been able to provide through unique grant models. Something is changing in philanthropy specifically led by women. We are given more funds and more freedom to iterate [at our own pace,] Gabriella Gmez-Mont, a Mexican creative urbanist and re:arc Public Discourse grantee, told me over one of many nourishing meals during the symposium.Dorraine Duncan, executive director at Island City Lab described to me how re:arc, to their surprise, approached them directly and provided much needed time to build up their project through a Practice Lab grant. In about 1842, a Salem merchant, Joseph Adams, built this stately Greek Revival style mansion on Pine Street in Danvers, Massachusetts. Named Overlook, the house is a simplified adaptation of the temple-front form with three columns supporting an entablature and closed pediment above. Joseph Adams was an instrumental force who brought an Episcopal church to Danvers, bankrolling the new building there himself. By 1862, the house was owned by Milton P. Braman (1799-1882), who had just retired as pastor for the First Church of Danvers. Of particular note, when news reached Danvers of the assassination of President Lincoln, a gang of men there captured two men who had said unkind words of the late president, and tar and feathered them. A number of the mob were said to have planned to also go to Rev. Bramans house here to do the same to him, as he was said to have been a copperhead a democrat whoopposedtheAmerican Civil Warand wanted an immediate peace settlement with theConfederates. Reverend Braman got wind of the plans of the local mob and had men stationed in the windows with shotguns, with the order to shoot anyone who entered the property. Luckily for all involved, the mob never showed. He would later move to Brookline and Newton. Overlook remains a significant country estate and very well-preserved by the owners.
