  • How Watch Dutys wildfire tracking app became a crucial lifeline for LA
    www.theverge.com
If you live in Los Angeles, you are probably already intimately familiar with Watch Duty, the free app that shows active fires, mandatory evacuation zones, air quality indexes, wind direction, and a wealth of other information that everyone, from firefighters to regular people, have come to rely on during this weeks historic and devastating wildfires.Watch Duty is unique in the tech world in that it doesnt care about user engagement, time spent, or ad sales. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit behind it only cares about the accuracy of the information it provides and the speed with which the service can deliver that information. The app itself has taken off, rocketing to the top of Apples and Googles app stores. Over 1 million people have downloaded it over the last few days alone. The elegance of the app lies in its simplicity. It doesnt scrape user data, show ads, require any kind of login, or track your information. Its simple tech stack and UI most of which is maintained by volunteer engineers and reporters has likely helped save countless lives. While Watch Duty is free to use, the app accepts tax-deductible donations and offers two tiers of membership that unlock additional features, like a firefighting flight tracker and the ability to set alerts for more than four counties. With plans to expand the service across the United States, as well as overseas and into other emergency services, Watch Duty may eventually replace some of the slower and less reliable local government alert systems for millions of people. Photo by Lokman Vural Elibol / Anadolu via Getty ImagesAn app born from fireThe idea for Watch Duty came to cofounder John Mills while he was trying to protect his off-grid Sonoma County home from the Walbridge fire in 2020. He realized there wasnt a single source for all the information people needed to protect themselves from the blaze, which ultimately killed 33 people and destroyed 156 homes. John and his friend David Merritt, who is Watch Dutys cofounder and CTO, decided to build an app to help. This came out of an idea that John had, and he talked to me about it four years ago, Merritt tells The Verge. We built the app in 60 days, and it was run completely by volunteers, no full-time staff. It was a side project for a lot of engineers, so the aim was to keep it as simple as possible.Fire reporting is piecemeal at best in fire-prone areas and frequently scattered across platforms like Facebook and X, where fire departments and counties have verified pages sharing relevant updates. But increasingly, social media platforms are putting automated access for alert services behind paywalls. Governments also use a wide variety of alert systems, causing delays that can cost lives, especially in fast-moving fires like the Palisades and Eaton fires that have forced evacuations for more than 180,000 people. And sometimes, these government-run alerts are sent out mistakenly, causing mass confusion. Watch Duty simplifies all that for millions of people. We view what we are doing as a public service, says Merritt. It is a utility that everyone should have, which is timely, relevant information for their safety during emergencies. Right now, its very scattered. Even the agencies themselves, which have the best intentions, their hands are tied by bureaucracy or contracts. We partner with government sources with a focus on firefighting. We view what we are doing as a public service. One of the biggest issues around fires, in particular, is that they can move quickly and consume large swaths of land and structures in minutes. For example, the winds that drove the Palisades fire to spread to more than 10,000 acres reached 90 miles per hour on Tuesday. When minutes matter, the piecemeal alert system that Watch Duty replaces can cause delays that cost lives. Some of the delivery systems for push notifications and text messages that government agencies use had a 15-minute delay, which is not good for fire, says Merritt. We shoot to have push notifications out in under a minute. Right now, 1.5 million people in LA are getting push notifications through the app. Thats a lot of messages to send out in 60 seconds. In general, people are getting it pretty much all at the same time. Image: Watch Duty Image: Watch DutyA simple tech stackFor Watch Duty, this kind of mass communication requires reliable technology as well as a group of dedicated staff and skilled volunteers. Merritt says that Watch Duty relies on a number of corporate partners with whom it has relationships and contracts to provide its service. We shoot to have push notifications out in under a minute. The app is built on a mix of technology, including Googles cloud platform, Amazon Web Services, Firebase, Fastly, and Heroku. Merritt says the app uses some AI, but only for internal routing of alerts and emails. Reporters at Watch Duty those who listen to scanners and update the app with push notifications about everything from air drops to evacuation updates are mostly volunteers who coordinate coverage via Slack. All information is vetted for quality over quantity, he says. We have a code of conduct for reporters. For example, we never report on injuries or give specific addresses. Its all tailored with a specific set of criteria. We dont editorialize. We report on what we have heard on the scanners.According to Merritt, the app has 100 percent uptime. Even though it started with volunteer engineers, the nonprofit has slowly added more full-time people. We still have volunteers helping us, but its becoming more on the internal paid staff as we grow, as things get more complex, and as we have more rigorous processes, he says. All information is vetted for quality over quantity. He says there are no plans to ever charge for the app or scrape user data. The approach is kind of the Field of Dreams method to building a free app that saves peoples lives: if you build it well, the funding will come. Its the antithesis of what a lot of tech does, Merritt says. We dont want you to spend time in the app. You get information and get out. We have the option of adding more photos, but we limit those to the ones that provide different views of a fire we have been tracking. We dont want people doom scrolling. Photo by FREDERIC J. BROWN / AFP via Getty ImagesCollecting information in the era of TrumpWatch Duty relies heavily on publicly available information from places like the National Weather Service and the Environmental Protection Agency. Should the incoming Trump administration decide to execute on threats to dismantle and disband the EPA (which monitors air quality) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the parent agency to the National Weather Service, such moves would impact Watch Dutys ability to operate.Even still, Merritt is optimistic. We will be pretty well insulated from any change to policy, he says. We are either buying that information ourselves already or we are happy to buy it, and we will take that cost on. The fact that were soon going to be covering the entire US will defray the cost of anything that shifts from a policy perspective. Our operation costs are mostly salaries. We are trying to hire really good engineers and have a really solid platform. If we need to raise a grant to buy data from the National Weather Service, then we will.Regardless of what the next administration does, its clear that Watch Duty has become a critical and necessary app for those in Southern California right now. The app currently covers 22 states and plans to roll out nationwide soon.We got 1.4 million app downloads in the last few days, according to Merritt. I think we have only received 60 support tickets, so that shows that something is working there. We are really just focused on the delivery of this information.

  • Its time for Apple to modernize its iCloud storage tiers
    9to5mac.com
Apple introduced iCloud back in June 2011, and since then, the free tier of iCloud has remained at 5GB. However, Im not here to talk about that today. While 5GB of free iCloud is definitely too little for our needs nearly a decade and a half later, I think Apple has a bigger issue to address with iCloud: its paid tiers.iCloud storage historyFor a decent while, Apple has offered 50GB of iCloud for $0.99/month, 200GB for $2.99/month, and 2TB for $9.99/month. This pricing was introduced in 2017, and has remained that way since.Between 2015 and 2017 though, $9.99/month got you just 1TB, and 2TB would be $19.99/month. Its certainly neat that Apple brought 2TB down in price since 2015, but eliminating 1TB certainly left a gap in the storage lineup and thats where my gripe is. Ill get to that later, though.Apple has done a few other things with iCloud since they set this pricing in 2017. iCloud now includes Private Relay, Custom Email Domains, Hide My Email, and HomeKit Secure Video (for users with 2TB or higher). Apple also rebranded its paid iCloud tiers in 2021, now referring to them as iCloud+.In 2023, Apple decided that a lot of people actually want more iCloud+ storage. After all, after the launch of Apple One in 2020, users discovered that you could purchase Apple One Premier for $34.95/month (which includes 2TB of iCloud), and also stack a separate 2TB iCloud subscription for $9.99/month, unlocking 4TB total.Im not sure how many people actually purchased Apple One Premier for the sake of unlocking 2TB of iCloud storage, but Im sure it wasnt zero. Regardless, Apple introduced new 6TB and 12TB iCloud+ tiers in 2023, after the launch of iPhone 15 Pro. These tiers came in at $29.99/month and $59.99/month, respectively. And, that was it. Apple made no changes to any other tier of iCloud+ when they made that upgrade. The tiers originally introduced in 2017 stuck around, just with some new higher-end tiers for heavy users.Apple likely benefits a ton from the three tier setup (excluding the extreme tiers) that it offers today. Ive long requested that Apple make a simple 1TB plan in between 2TB and 2TB, but theres probably some well-thought-through business reason for not wanting to do that. So, instead, I have an easier proposal. My proposalInstead of introducing a new fourth lower end tier, why not just adjust how much storage everyone gets? After nearly ten years of the lower end 50GB and 200GB plans remaining at the prices they are today, I think its about time to change things up. After all, file sizes are only getting larger. 50GB is probably barely enough for most peoples iPhone backup at this point. This is what I suggest:Free: 5GB (I know, this sucks, but this isnt the focus here)$1.99/month: 100GB$3.99/month: 400GB$9.99/month: 2TBI took inspiration for the 100GB plan from Google, who currently offers 100GB for $1.99/month. Seeing as Google and Apple share the same $9.99/month price tag for 2TB, I think its a fair reference point for pricing.Above that, theres the 400GB plan for $3.99/month. I think thats a nice balance between offering more storage for an okay price and not completely cannibalizing the customer base for the 2TB tier. Many would likely argue that Apple intentionally keeps a large gap between 200GB and 2TB to push people to pay for storage they dont need, but I dont necessarily agree. I think in most cases, once running into the 200GB iCloud limit, customers just end up using iCloud storage less, whether that be by storing photos/videos locally, or straight up finding things to delete.Wrap upIn a lot of peoples minds, itll be a long time before they can utilize 2TB, so why pay for it now? My proposed pricing tier bridges that gap a fair bit, and provides an ample amount of storage for todays world. When Apple introduced the storage tiers it offers today, iPhones were just transitioning from 32GB to 64GB of base storage. Nowadays we have 128GB and 256GB depending on which iPhone you buy, so I think its fair for the iCloud tiers to reflect that.Do you agree with these proposed tiers, or would you like to see something else? Im sure many people would suggest more than 5GB for free, which would also be a welcome change. • 9 Great Horror Movies to Watch on Prime Video This Weekend
    www.cnet.com
Prime Video has a lot to offer horror fans, from classic movies like American Psycho to more recent releases like Abigail. Ads are now a part of the streaming service, but if you'd prefer to watch your spooky content without commercial interruptions, you can pay an additional fee to remove them. Here are some highly rated horror films to satisfy your cravings. Dim the lights, grab the popcorn and enjoy your creepy feature. Universal Pictures Abigail (2024) Wild, gruesome and a lot of fun, this horror movie follows a group of kidnappers -- including a woman played by Melissa Barrera -- who discover a little too late their young captor is far from helpless. Paramount Pictures A Quiet Place: Day One (2024) Aliens that kill based on sound populated the worlds of the post-apocalyptic horror films A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II. This spin-off prequel written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (John Krasinski helmed the originals) shows the creatures invading New York and stars Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn. Lionsgate American Psycho (2000) In case you haven't yet been introduced to well-groomed investment banker Patrick Bateman, it's time to pull out your business card and get acquainted. Elements of dark comedy, thriller and horror are on display in this film, a satire of late '80s excess that stars Christian Bale as a wealthy young professional with murderous hobbies. Totally Killer (2023) Want to revisit the '80s? Kiernan Shipka time travels to the decade and takes on a killer in this new Prime Video slasher comedy. Randall Park and Julie Bowen also make appearances. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre/YouTube The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) Five friends cross paths with cannibalistic monsters -- including the chain saw-wielding Leatherface -- in this 1974 film directed by Tobe Hooper. The influential horror movie will thrill and disturb you. Amazon Studios Nanny (2022) Nanny is an increasingly unnerving movie about a mother working in the US and separated from her son in Senegal, whom she hopes will soon join her. The powerful, chillingfilm -- led by a captivating Anna Diop -- takes viewers through her difficult, haunting wait. Universal Candyman (2021) Jordan Peele and Nia DaCosta are at the helm of this gripping slasher. A sequel to the 1992 film of the same name, Candyman tackles issues such as gentrification and police brutality. Prepare for blood, swarming bees and people making the unfortunate decision to recite Candyman's name in front of a mirror. Candyman is available to watch for free with ads. Amazon Suspiria (2018) If you like your horror films interspersed with a bit of contemporary dance (and who wouldn't!), then Suspiria is definitely the one for you. It tells the story of a supernatural dance academy run by a coven of witches and features themes like motherhood, guilt and abuse of power. An homage to the original 1977 film, Suspiria stars Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton. Amazon Prime Coherence (2014) Coherence is a huge favorite here at CNETand it's a terrifying watch. Not necessarily in the traditional, gory, horrific sense but more in terms of the concepts. It's a multiverse movie released before multiverses were cool and is not what you expect. Coherence is the kind of movie you'll finish and immediately rewatch to try to rewire your brain. It's a fantastic achievement and amust watch. Related stories

  • What the US PornHub ban is really about
    www.independent.co.uk
What the US PornHub ban is really aboutAge verification laws designed to block children from online porn sites are sweeping the US, Io Dodds writes. But do they actually protect children, or is there another agenda at work?Saturday 11 January 2025 15:37 GMTUS states where Pornhub and other US states are blocked (The Independent)Age verification systems are surveillance systemsThe latest headlines from our reporters across the US sent straight to your inbox each weekdayYour briefing on the latest headlines from across the USYour briefing on the latest headlines from across the USI would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read ourprivacy policyNearly one third of U.S. states with a combined population of just over 104 millions people are now unable to access PornHub, the worlds largest pornography site. That is because all those states have passed laws requiring porn websites to verify that their users are under-18, such as by checking their drivers licenses, or else be vulnerable to civil lawsuits. The result is that online porn giant Aylo, which owns PornHub, RedTube, and YouPorn has simply stopped operating in those states, arguing that it cannot comply with the laws without violating its users privacy.Advocates say these laws are necessary to prevent children from accessing online porn, which they claim is distorting young peoples sexuality and normalizing sexual abuse.Critics argue that they are ineffective, burdensome, and effectively ban reputable providers from operating at all as well as potentially being a Trojan horse for crackdowns against sexual and gender freedom. At the core of the debate is a genuinely thorny technical and legal question: how to verify someones age over the internet without exposing them to cyber theft or government surveillance.Age verification providers are adamant that this is possible. But in practice, that question is overshadowed by Americas culture war and by the rising tide of social conservatism that seeks to control and suppress sexuality itself. This is the canary in the coal mine. It isnt just about porn, digital rights advocate Evan Greer told the BBC.HTMLAge verification systems are surveillance systemsIn July 2024, Donald Trump ally and Project 2025 contributor Russell Vought sat down in a five-star hotel room in Washington, DC to meet two men whod represented themselves as relatives of a wealthy potential donor.Wed have a national ban on pornography if we could, right? Vought allegedly said. Wed have the porn companies being investigated for all manner of human rights abuses. But instead, he explained, were doing it from the back door starting with the kids.In fact, the two other men were undercover agents of a British environmentalist nonprofit, who then shared the video of their conversation By back door, Vought was referring to a new type of anti-pornography law that has attracted broad bipartisan support, even as they provoke numerous first amendment lawsuits. This wave is the product of a strange alliance between Laurie Schlegel, a sex addiction therapist and freshman Republican state legislator in Louisiana, and Gail Dines, a British radical feminist who helped build bipartisan support for Schlegels bill. You cant be 10 years old and go into Mr. Binkys thats an adult bookstore in my district, Schlegel Schlegels bill was passed almost unanimously by Louisianas state legislature, with the support of both parties. That pattern has repeated across the US.Most of these laws are similar to Schlegels, which citizens to sue porn providers if they fail to implement reasonable age verification methods, either directly or through a third party provider. The law isnt very specific about what methods count as reasonable, but gives checking government IDs and checking transactional data (such as mortgage or employment records) as examples.Schlegels law also requires age verifiers to delete all identifying information after access has been granted.Yet porn sites and free speech activists say these laws are riddled with problems. Aylo has publicly supported age verification of users for years, a spokesperson for Aylo told The Independent. [But] any regulations that require hundreds of thousands of adult sites to collect significant amounts of highly sensitive personal information is putting user safety in jeopardy.Age checking methods that use government IDs also freeze out the sizable number of people who do not have one.Age verification systems are surveillance systems, says the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Once information is shared to verify age, theres no way for a website visitor to be certain that the data theyre handing over is not going to be retained and used by the website, or further shared or even sold.A 2022 report by Frances data regulator CNIL found that there was no solution on offer that simultaneously offered sufficient reliability, complete coverage of the population, and respect... for privacy and security.Opponents also argue there are less intrusive ways to stop children from accessing adult content such as stronger parental controls on devices. Given that, they argue, why should adults be required to expose their identity simply to access a legal and constitutionally protected art form?Besides, most users will be able to find porn elsewhere, on websites that do not even try to comply. Porn companies that have tried to implement age checks say their users largely refuse to participate. To speak frankly, this is leading to the suppression of the most responsible sites in the industry in favour of those that often do not verify uploaders, do not moderate content, do not integrate age verification, a spokesperson for porn site xHamster told the BBC.This can be done in a privacy-preserving wayAge verification providers and child protection advocates insist that its possible to check users age without creating some dodgy database of citizens masturbation habits. When the UK first tried to do this back in 2017, there was a very legitimate question about how this could technically be done, Andy Burrows, head of a British child protection group called the Molly Rose Foundation, tells The Independent.Weve now had the best part of a decade of the market developing solutions... and I think we can say with certainty that there are robust technical means to age assure at 18 in a privacy-preserving way.Take Yoti, a British company that works with adult sites and apps such as OnlyFans, as well as tobacco vendors, gaming companies, and social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.Weve done over 700 million age checks over the last five six years, and all of those 700 million checks have been deleted immediately after we estimated the age, chief executive Robin Tombs tells The Independent. No porn site gets to see anything [about the user] apart from an over 18 or an under 18 result. Thats not well explained by many privacy organizations, and by some adult sites who basically dont want to see age verification come in.With this method, users take a photo of their face which is then analyzed by AI to estimate their age. Tombs says this involves no analysis of the users actual identity, and that all photos are deleted once the check is finished. Hence, neither Yoti nor the porn site ever needs to know who you are.AI face estimation is not without drawbacks. Tombs admits that users at the borderline, who have only recently come of age, sometimes cannot use it, because they may still look to young for the AI to be confident that they really are over 18.Another method, used in Germany, lets people show their ID card at a post office and get a unique ID to access adult sites. This could potentially be done without logging the persons identity, but as CNIL points out such systems require much work to set up.Burrows agrees that striking a good balance between safety and privacy requires a high degree of regulatory clarity and engagement something few US age verification laws currently provide. We find ourselves being asked to justify some of the legislation coming from red states that isnt being constructed or driven the way we would look to do it, he says.Legislation should be drafted in a way that... there isnt the potential for mission creep, which starts taking us into a more subjective measure of what is and isnt harmful for children.Mission creep is exactly what opponents fear will happen. The chilling effect here is the point, Michael Stabile of the Free Speech Coalition, an adult industry trade group, Vought himself said as much in the undercover recording. What happens is, the porn company then says were not gonna do business in your state. Which is of course entirely what we were after.Indeed, Project 2025 calls for porn to be outlawed entirely, with creators jailed and librarians who stock such material its odd definition fo pornography including the omnipresent propagation of transgender ideology be classed as sex offenders. Given American conservatives sustained attempt to tar LGBT+ people in general as child abusers, its easy to see why some Americans wouldnt trust these new laws. All of which leaves us with yet another new front in the culture war, but not much in the way of actually effective age verification systems that are widely used and trusted. A cynic might suspect that thats the point.Join our commenting forumJoin thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their repliesMost PopularPopular videosSponsored Features

  • Researchers open source Sky-T1, a reasoning AI model that can be trained for less than $450
    techcrunch.com
So-called reasoning AI models are becoming easier and cheaper to develop. On Friday, NovaSky, a team of researchers based out of UC Berkeleys Sky Computing Lab, released Sky-T1-32B-Preview, a reasoning model thats competitive with an earlier version of OpenAIs o1 on a number of key benchmarks. Sky-T1 appears to be the first truly open source reasoning model in the sense that it can be replicated from scratch; the team released the data set they used to train it as well as the necessary training code.Remarkably, Sky-T1-32B-Preview was trained for less than $450, the team wrote in a blog post, demonstrating that it is possible to replicate high-level reasoning capabilities affordably and efficiently.$450 might not sound that affordable. But it wasnt long ago that the price tag for training a model with comparable performance often ranged in the millions of dollars. Unlike most AI, reasoning models effectively fact-check themselves, whichhelps them to avoid some of thepitfallsthat normally trip up models. Reasoning models take a little longer usually seconds to minutes longer to arrive at solutions compared to a typical non-reasoning model. The upside is, they tend to be more reliable in domains such as physics, science, and mathematics. The NovaSky team says it used another reasoning model, Alibabas QwQ-32B-Preview, to generate the initial training data for Sky-T1, then curated the data mixture and leveraged OpenAIs GPT-4o-mini to refactor the data into a more workable format. Training the 32-billion-parameter Sky-T1 took about 19 hours using a rack of 8 Nvidia H100 GPUs. (Parameters roughly correspond to a models problem-solving skills.)According to the NovaSky team, Sky-T1 performs better than an early preview version of o1 on MATH500, a collection of competition-level math challenges. The model also beats the preview of o1 on a set of difficult problems from LiveCodeBench, a coding evaluation. However, Sky-T1 falls short of the o1 preview on GPQA-Diamond, which contains physics, biology, and chemistry-related questions a PhD graduate would be expected to know. Also important to note is that OpenAIs GA release of o1 is a stronger model than the preview version of o1, and that OpenAI is expected to release an even better-performing reasoning model, o3, in the weeks ahead. But the NovaSky team says that Sky-T1 only marks the start of their journey to develop open source models with advanced reasoning capabilities. Moving forward, we will focus on developing more efficient models that maintain strong reasoning performance and exploring advanced techniques that further enhance the models efficiency and accuracy at test time, the team wrote in the post. Stay tuned as we make progress on these exciting initiatives.
