WWW.SCIENTIFICAMERICAN.COMClimate Opportunities in Greenland May Be Part of Trumps InterestJanuary 13, 20254 min readWhy Does Greenland Interest Trump? Climate Change Is Only Part of the StoryArctic shipping routes and burgeoning mining opportunities may be part of Greenlands appeal to President-elect Donald Trump, but each comes with challenges as wellBy Meghan Bartels edited by Jeanna BrynerContainer ship navigating among icebergs in the harbor of Narsaq, Southern Greenland. Leamus/Getty ImagesPresident-elect Donald Trump has been talking covetously about Greenland, the worlds largest island, among other locations. Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation, he wrote on January 6 on the social media network he founded, Truth Social. The remarks came out of the blue for many Americansand Greenlanders as well, according to Kuupik Kleist, former prime minister of the island. We dont really know what the background is, he says. But science offers some hints as to Trumps motivationparticularly whether it rests on potential ice melt and other results of the warming climate, a phenomenon Trump falsely denies is occurring or is linked to human activities.First, some background: Greenland is home to fewer than 58,000 people, about one tenth the population of Wyoming, the state with the fewest residents, or just a few thousand more people than those in the U.S. territory of the Northern Mariana Islands. Formerly a colony of Denmark, Greenland is now domestically self-governing but still under Danish control regarding issues such as financial policy, foreign affairs and security. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. And those issues are becoming more intricate as climate change accelerates, making the Arctic a center of global attention. Greenland is in a very strategic place in the Arctic for many different interests, says Melody Brown Burkins, who works on science policy and diplomacy in the Arctic and globally at Dartmouth College.Perhaps the most cited aspect of this strategic location comes from an unglamourous source: international shipping routes. As Arctic ice melts, the argument goes, the region will become more passable to ships, offering shorter routes for moving cargo between population centers. And indeed, that trend seems to be in motion: the number of unique ships entering the Arctic increased by 37 percent between 2013 and 2023, according to the intergovernmental Arctic Council. But the promise of polar routes may be overhyped, Burkins says. I think this massive idea that were going to send all ships to these new routes to save money is a little odd, she says, particularly given how harsh polar ocean conditions are and will continue to be. You can say theres going to be less ice, but theres going to be a lot more ice drifting around to puncture ships, she says.In September 2023, when Arctic sea ice was at its yearly minimum, fewer than 1,800 individual vessels ventured into the region. Thats less than 2 percent of the global fleet and 63 percent of the whole years Arctic ship traffic. Moreover, throughout the year, fishing ships outnumbered cargo ships. Combined, those numbers suggest that despite recent growth in Arctic shipping, the opportunities remain limited, as Burkins suggests. The seasons are not conducive, and its very challenging waters, she says of these northerly seas, also noting that shipping infrastructure, such as the presence of ports, remains scarce in the region. That limited infrastructure also complicates the second narrative that has often been cited as a reason for interest in Greenland: mineral extraction, says Anne Merrild, a professor of resource management at Aalborg University in Denmark, who grew up in Greenland. The minerals that are so desirable are rich in rare earth metals and other materials that could be particularly useful in renewable energy technology such as power-storing batteries and windmill magnets.Merrild notes, however, that those minerals are not, as outsiders might assume, buried under Greenlands ice sheet and frozen out of the reach of would-be miners. Plenty lie along the ice-free coastsbut firmly underground, awaiting export infrastructure, Greenlandic political will and foreign commercial partnerships. Despite Trumps comments, Merrild says that her research hasnt shown much U.S. commercial interest in the islands minerals. Nevertheless, she and Kleist believe that under the right conditions, Greenlanders would be willing to permit mining as a way of diversifying its economy beyond fishing. Each of these is fraught, Burkins says of shipping lanes and rare earth mining, as well as other explanations for Trumps interest in annexing another governments land. If national security is the concern, since the mid-20th century the U.S. has had rights to operate military outposts in Greenland. Such outposts have included an infamous would-be ballistic missile site that was abandoned in 1966, produced more than 47,000 gallons of radioactive waste and is still buried under the ice sheet, as well as a single Space Force base operating today.Greenland may not often be considered powerful, but it has real political ties with both Denmark and the rest of Europe, as well as long historical connections with Canada. Trumps apparent interest in the island may even give Greenlanders additional leverage in these international conversations, Merrild speculates. And while Greenland and Denmark are in ongoing discussions of potential independence for the island, its hard to imagine Greenlanders finally breaking ties with one colonial power only to voluntarily accept anothermaking Trumps threats to use economic or military force particularly problematic, Kleist says. Thats far beyond acceptable, he says. You dont simply do that in 2025.0 Comments 0 Shares 97 Views

WWW.EUROGAMER.NETSonic 3 film credits animator discusses making Classic Shadow an official realityThe animator behind the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film credits has detailed the creation of its low poly character models, including the first ever Classic Shadow. Each of the Sonic films has had a retro-themed credits sequence, gradually moving from 2D pixels to the low poly 3D models in this film, which were based on arcade game Sonic the Fighters. However, with the inclusion of Shadow the Hedgehog in the film, this provided an opportunity to create a Classic Shadow model for the first time.I worked on Sonic 3.Watch on YouTubeBack in 2023, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka told GameInformer (thanks Sonic Stadium) during a Sonic Superstars preview that Shadow would not be mixing with classic characters."Shadow is from the Modern series of characters and gameplay that we have introduced," he said. "The Classic series exists before the Modern series, so they haven't met at that time. There's no relationship, so we won't be bringing Shadow into the Classic series."Then, with last year's Sonic x Shadow Generations, Iizuka confirmed to Eurogamer before its release there would be no Classic Shadow.Yet animator suitNtie managed to do it, which he's detailed in a new video discussing the creation of the credits."[Shadow's design] is something that is probably one of the most important things to me on the project," he said."It feels almost like [Sega is] allergic to this idea completely. So I was really sceptical if I was going to be able to."The model itself was based on the same used for Sonic, but with a few tweaks: the colour scheme, of course, as well as the shoes and eyeliner. These low poly models are such a thrill for fans | Image credit: Sega / Paramount / Picturemill"But then it came down to the torso - what I would consider Classic Sonic's main thing is the torso and also the proportions," he continued, pointing to the model's round body design. "Will they want the more normal Sonic Adventure-style body, instead of this Classic one?"If you watch the movie you see that it's Classic Shadow! I got Classic Shadow in an official Sonic product!"Elsewhere in the video, suitNtie discusses how he got the job. At the end of 2023 he was laid off from his job as a VFX artist in the games industry, similarly to so many employees. It's great, therefore, to see such a success story emerging from its aftermath. In addition to the video, the animator has shared a thread on X discussing some extra titbits, including how he tried to sneak a Dreamcast console into the background. To see this content please enable targeting cookies.Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been a resounding success for both Sega and Paramount, as the film franchise has surpassed $1bn at the global box office."Sega and Paramount more closely align game and film worlds for an authentic Sonic romp with added Keanu cool," reads our film review of Sonic the Hedgehog 3.There are also multiple post-credit sequences: what could they be hinting at for Sonic 4?0 Comments 0 Shares 96 Views

WWW.VIDEOGAMER.COMDBD leaks reveal Resident Evil 2v8 killers, abilities and possibly new skinsYou can trust VideoGamer. Our team of gaming experts spend hours testing and reviewing the latest games, to ensure you're reading the most comprehensive guide possible. Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games here Contents hide Dead By Daylight 2v8 mode is a lot of fun, and BeHaviour has promised that it will come back in the form of a third iteration. While nothing is official yet, DBD leaks have revealed new Resident Evil 2v8 killers and abilities, and it seems we might also be getting fresh skins for a beloved Resident Evil character. New Dead By Daylight 2v8 Resident Evil killers We previously reported on leaks that suggest Dead By Daylight is teaming up with Resident Evil for 2v8 mode. Its believed that the LTM will return in February, although theres no confirmation of anything yet from BeHaviour Interactive. BeHaviour previously discussed the difficulties with getting licensed killers for 2v8 mode, but it seems Resident Evil could be happening because its two rogues from the same IP teaming up instead of two bad guys from different franchises. Mathieu Cote said it was difficult getting the okay for team ups such as Nemesis with Chucky, so partnerships within the same IP make a lot of sense. According to Dvveet, both Nemesis and Wesker will team up in 2v8 mode. They will also be accompanied by the previously leaked Legion. While not official, these leaks come via datamines shared on the DBDLeaks Discord by Wazzup and Masusder. As for abilities, Wazzup reports that Nemesis and Wesker will spawn Supply Crates containing a new limited item that is able to cure both of their infections. Its also claimed that this item holds 3 charges.Lastly, in the previous leak, it was discovered that Racoon City Police Station will be a new 2v8 map, and there will also the addition of a new survivor class called Meat Shield. This class is capable of dashing, which can absorb hits and stun killers. Image credit: DBDLeaks Discord New DBD skins In addition to Wesker and Nemesis joining DBD 2v8 mode as new killers, BeHaviour will enable Blights William Birkin skin along with Legions Hunk skin. These are both based on Resident Evil, and they will have a special in-game portrait for the LTM. While BeHaviour enabling licensed skins is great news for the LTM, its speculated that we could possibly getting a new skin for Ada Wong. Leaks have found seemingly new or currently missing audio related to Ada Wong, and this could signal a new Cosmetic for her. Its important to stress that a new skin for Ada is speculation compared to the addition of Nemesis and Wesker as killers for 2v8. BeHaviour could possibly release a new Ada skin as they are releasing Resident Evil killer and survivor skin bundles in February according to leaks, but nothing is concrete right now. WWW.ARCHITECTURALDIGEST.COM9 Renovations That Can Devalue Your HomeEmbarking on a home renovation can be an exciting timedepending on the project, you have carte blanche to make your home unique, fix problem areas that have been neglected, and even boost your homes value should you decide to sell it down the line. But not every renovation will sustain that last goal. In addition to renovations that dont increase value, there are even some that can hurt a sale. Ahead, seasoned realtors and home improvement pros reveal the nine renovations that can devalue your homeplus what you should be considering instead.Overly personalized designIts natural to make your home your own, but if you have plans to sell your house at any point, steer clear from overcustomizing your space. This can include anything from eye-catching kitchen backsplashes to trendy wallpapers or painted murals. Bold accent walls, ultra-modern fixtures, or anything too niche can turn buyers off, explains Yoann Dorat, global real estate advisor with ONE Sothebys International Realty. They cant picture themselves living there, and buyers think renovation project as soon as they see it. Neutral design wins every time.Bedroom conversionsWorking from home has become more ubiquitous, so converting a bedroom into a beautiful home office (or a home gym or even a walk-in closet) might feel like a smart movebut beware if you do. This one is a deal killer. Bedrooms add direct value, and most buyers search for homes based on bedroom count, says Dorat. Turn a bedroom into an office, walk-in closet, or gym, and you lose serious appealespecially if youre dropping from four beds to three.Garage conversionsMost buyers still want garages. If you plan to use yours for something other than storing cars, consider if its an easily reversible design should you plan to sell in the future.Photo: Don Mason/Getty ImagesConversely, if you barely use your garage for housing your car, it might seem smart to convert that space into something livable or more usablelike an accessory dwelling unit or a gym. But resist the urge if you plan to sell, because garages are truly valuable to a prospective buyer. While its tempting to create extra living space, buyers still want garages, Dorat says. In suburban and family-friendly markets, this is especially true. Losing a garage often means losing buyer interest.Overimprovingor overbuildinga homeEven if you have the funds to add more square footage or luxury, high-end finishes, it doesnt make sense if itll make your home stand out badly. An oversized home in a neighborhood of modest three-bedroom homes can make the property stick out to the point that it can deter prospective buyers, says Leo Peak, a realtor with Peak Family Real Estate Group. People shopping for homes in a specific price range or community often expect homes that align with the areas overall aesthetic and functionality.Adding a poolPools can be great in the summer. But their seasonality and upkeep can make them unattractive to potential buyers.Photo: Scott Van Dyke/Getty Images0 Comments 0 Shares 89 Views

WWW.VG247.COMThe battle wages on: Sonic 3 is the second highest grossing video game movie in the US behind Mario, though the gap between them really shows who's the top dogHog Not Quite TiedThe battle wages on: Sonic 3 is the second highest grossing video game movie in the US behind Mario, though the gap between them really shows who's the top dogYou can already guess who I'm talking about here.Image credit: Universal/ Illumination/ Paramount/ Nintendo/ Sega News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Jan. 13, 2025 Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is now the second highest grossing video game movie in the US, with only his old rival Mario ahead of him. It's a tale as old as time: plumber versus hedgehog, Mario versus Sonic. OK, maybe not as old as time, more like a tale as old as the late '80s/ early '90s, but still, the two have a long history and rivalry together. If we're being real, we all know that Mario is the more successful of the two, especially because Sega to this day hasn't quite found its footing with Sonic's transition to 3D. Still, it can't be denied that the blue hog is popular, as the franchise is now a billion dollar one as of the third film. On top of that, though, it's also now the second highest grossing video game movie in the US ever, having reached over $204 million domestically, taking over its predecessor Sonic 2. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Only Mario is ahead of it now, but uh, the gap is quite large. Domestically The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed just shy of $575 million, almost $300 million more than Sonic 3. That doesn't mean everyone's favourite speedster is doing bad by any means, but it does also mean that yet again Mario has come out on top. Though Sega, if for some strange reason you're reading this, don't worry, you have the better film (maybe not that first Sonic film, why did you basically remake 2011's Hop, complete with James Marsden and all).Still, aside from doing better domestically, the Mario Bros. movie also grossed over $1 billion alone, so it really is clear who won the console war in the end. A sequel is on the way for Mario and co, and a fourth Sonic film was greenlit before the third one even arrived in cinemas, so the lesson here is actually that the real winners are the production companies that made them.0 Comments 0 Shares 100 Views

TECHCRUNCH.COMFloat Financial, which aims to be the Brex of Canada, lands US$48.5M Series BFloat Financial, an expense management and corporate card startup focused on the Canadian market, has raised $48.5 million in a Series B funding round. The Toronto-based fintech likens itself to U.S.-based fintech giants Brex and Ramp but says it is different in that its sole focus is on Canadian SMBs, which CEO and co-founder Rob Khazzam said are overlooked due to Canadas banking monopoly and tough economic climate.Goldman Sachs Growth Equity led the financing, which included participation from OMERS Ventures, FJ Labs, Teralys and existing investor Garage Capital. The raise brings Float Financials total venture funding to US$92.6 million since its 2020 inception. The company also raised a $36.9 million credit facility in February of 2024, which it is using to extend credit to customers. The company declined to reveal valuation, noting only that it was an up round from its US$30 million Series A raise led by Tiger Global in November of 2021.While Khazzam declined to reveal hard revenue figures, he claims that Float has seen its revenue increase by 50x and total payment volume by 45x since that Series A raise. It also says it has seen a 30x increase in assets under management, he added. The company is not yet profitable.Float launched its first product in May of 2021 and has slowly been expanding its offering from corporate cards and expense management to include bill pay, high-yield accounts, accounts payable automation and virtual physical cards in both Canadian and U.S. dollars. Jane Software, LumiQ, Knix are among its 4,000 customers.Khazzam dismissed what he described as talk in the media lately that Canadian businesses are not a good place to invest right now.The landscape of Canadian SMBs is rich and diverse and chock full of potential, he told TechCrunch. At Float, we understand that addressing the needs of these businesses requires a distinctly Canadian approachOur financial system needs to match the speed and ambition of Canadian businesses if we want to thrive locally and compete globally.Float plans to use its new capital to further expand its product offering and regional presence within Canada as well as continue hiring.Laura Lenz, partner at OMERS Ventures, believes that Floats ability to work within the Canadian regulatory framework andunderstand the nuances of this market is critical to its success. It takes someone intimately familiar with these nuances to be able to create a product that works, she said. As investors with strong Canadian roots, we know there is an urgent need for banking infrastructure that helps Canadian businesses keep pace with their US counterparts and remain competitive on the global stage.Want more fintech news in your inbox? Completed in 2024, this 200-square-meter project transforms the process of wood burning into a spatial experience. Through the interplay of dark hues, fiery accents, and sculptural forms, the design explores a narrative where wood transforms into glowing embers.Hookah Restaurant Technical InformationArchitects1-4: Freya ArchitectsLocation: Belgrade, SerbiaArea: 200 m2 | 2,150 Sq. The architects used this concept to craft a symbolic and functional interior. The dark tones represent smoldering coals, while bright orange accents evoke the fiery nature of burning wood. These elements, combined with the forms of custom lighting and material selections, create a warm and dynamic atmosphere. The spatial organization of the Hookah Restaurant reflects a balance of functionality and storytelling. The layout revolves around a bar, serving as a physical and conceptual centerpiece. This bar, shaped like a massive, petrified tree stump, acts as a hub connecting various functional areas. Behind the bar, a passage leads to the kitchen and technical zones.Natural wooden tables line the windows opposite the bar, offering seating arrangements encouraging social interaction. The dining hall features a movable screen adorned with suspended fragments of burnt wood, creating seating zones that can adapt to different group sizes.
