9TO5MAC.COMApple might re-enter the networking market, but in a way you wouldnt expectAccording to Mark Gurmans Power On newsletter, Apple is not working on a new version of its AirPort wireless router. However, they are working on something else that could potentially serve as a wireless access point, so dont give up hope quite yet.Late last year, we got some new information regarding Apples in-house wireless networking chip, dubbed Proxima. So far, we know this chip will go in a number of home related products, including the Apple TV and HomePod. Itll also show up in iPhone 17 and Mac models later on.One interesting thing about this new chip is that its apparently sophisticated enough that Apple could choose to turn it into a wireless router:The Proxima chip is so sophisticated that it couldtheoreticallyturn a home device like an Apple TV box or HomePod into a wireless access point. Google has released products like this before, including a mixed Wi-Fi router and smart speaker.Gurman notes that the wireless features of these upcoming Apple TV and HomePods wouldnt be a highlight at all, if Apple even chooses to enable wireless access point functionality at all.I think an Apple Airport with a NAS is greatly welcomed. Integration with Matter would be awesome. Another reason would be the privacy trust that we would get with Apple. With all the trust news with manufacturers like TPLINK, I think having something I could trust would be nice. View all commentsEither way, its cool to know that it is possible. If Apple wanted to, we could have an Apple-designed wireless access point, similar to the AirPort Express, in our lives once again. Many have dreamed of this, especially since Apples AirPort lineup was discontinued so long ago. Apple released the last AirPort device in 2013.What do you think of the possibility of new Apple wireless access points? FUTURISM.COMAmazon Says All It Needs to Do Before Releasing an AI-Powered Alexa Is to Solve the Giant Engineering Problem That Nobody Else on Earth Has Been Able to SolveAmazon is still hard at work in its efforts to realize an AI-powered Alexa digital assistant. As the Financial Times reports, the tech giant still has to sort out "several technical hurdles" before rolling out the long-awaited feature. One of them, according to Amazon AI team lead Rohit Prasad, is solving the pesky issue of "hallucinations" an industry term denoting the non-factual hallucinations that large language models often spit out, to the chagrin of many companies attempting to commercialize the tech."Hallucinations have to be close to zero," Prasad told the FT.The issue? That's far easier said than done. Despite billions of dollars of investment and the construction of massive data centers to power increasingly complex AI models, even the most advanced chatbots still have a strong tendency to "hallucinate" false claims. Some experts have long argued that the issue might be intrinsic to the tech itself. In other words, hallucinations may always be a part of the equation an unfortunate reality that tech companies are unlikely to admit, especially in the face of all of generative AI's buzz right now."Theyre really just sort of designed to predict the next word," Anthropic cofounder and president Daniela Amodeitold the Associated Press back in 2023. "And so there will be some rate at which the model does that inaccurately."Meanwhile, tech companies that have invested astronomical sums in the tech's development are attempting to sweep the topic of hallucinations under the rug, insisting that it's only a matter of time until the issue is solved. Some companies, like Microsoft, believe that more AI could be the answer. The company unveiled a tool last year that uses AI to evaluate the outputs of other models, though experts have warned that the strategy may be inherently flawed."Trying to eliminate hallucinations from generative AI is like trying to eliminate hydrogen from water," University of Washington PhD candidate Os Keyes told TechCrunch last year. "Its an essential component of how the technology works."Amazon is several years behind the competition when it comes to releasing a generative AI-powered personal assistant. That's despite having worked on an Alexa redesign since late 2022, according to the FT.The long delay highlights just how difficult it is to overcome the issue of hallucinations if it's indeed possible. So far, Alexa's capabilities remain severely limited compared to AI chatbots like ChatGPT, only helping users with simple tasks like changing the music or starting timers.Making matters even more difficult is the fact that keeping AI assistants running while getting "billions of requests a week," according to Prasad, can become extremely expensivedue to the tech's power-hungry and highly energy-inefficient nature. That means turning the assistant into a money maker, even with a rumored $10 monthly subscription fee, could prove difficult. And it's not just Amazon. Apple's Siri home assistant is also set to get an AI-powered revamp. But the tech giant is giving itself until 2026 to release it,and in the meantime, Apple had to halt an AI news summary feature this week after it consistently spread hallucinated fake news to millions of iPhone users for over a month. The stakes are high for the likes of Amazon and Apple: unleashing a hallucinating assistant inside your home and giving it access to data from other internet-connected devices, such as smart doorbells or security cameras, could prove disastrous.More on Alexa: Amazon Horrified by What People Actually Use Alexa ForShare This Article0 Commentaires 0 Parts 150 Vue

First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location. All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.Remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. WWW.EUROGAMER.NETStar Wars Jedi: Survivor gets a PSSR upgrade on PS5 Pro - and image quality is much improvedStar Wars Jedi: Survivor gets a PSSR upgrade on PS5 Pro - and image quality is much improvedThe most glaring issues addressed, but there's still work to be done.Image credit: Respawn Entertainment Face-off by Oliver Mackenzie Contributor Published on Jan. 18, 2025 After some impressive upgrades to PS5 Pro games with the implementation of PSSR machine learning-based upscaling, post-launch issues started to emerge and several games we tested exhibited some serious issues. Foremost amongst them was Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, where RT upgrades were marred by foliage strobing so bad, we had no idea how the patch escaped quality control.Other affected games have since added FSR toggles or reverted to standard upscaling, but Jedi: Survivor is intriguing in that a different approach has been taken. Developer Respawn says it has implemented the latest version of PSSR and having reviewed the latest patch, we can confirm that there are genuine improvements.Looking at the performance mode first, the pulsing and strobing effects are much, much improved - and mostly gone. The notorious river run, which previously looked pretty disastrous, now presents much more cleanly and there is some suggestion that Respawn has put in additional effort to get this area into shape. While there are improvements, some PSSR issues persist, with a persistent noise on opaque geometry, while bizarrely, an unwanted vignetting effect is now present on the edge of the screen.A new look at Jedi: Survivor on PS5 Pro - and it has been improved!Watch on YouTubeThe improvements are clear, however, and do seem to be down to PSSR and further tweaks from the developer. One route forward for boosting quality would have been to increase resolution, but in our tests, the pixel counts remain much the same and performance is still solid - so there hasn't been a 'brute force' attempt to increase quality in that way. There are still issues to address, however, tied more closely to PSSR's ongoing evolution. We have to remind ourselves that PSSR is still a first generation product that will evolve and improve over time. The instability, break-up and noise problems stand in stark contrast to the older CNN version of Nvidia DLSS, for example, though in our head-to-head comparisons, PSSR does seem to present more sharply in motion. We also took a look at the quality mode in the game, which targets 30fps and while the downgrade to frame-rate is obvious, the improvements to resolution make the 4K output from PSSR more convincing - though still some way short of the standard set by DLSS at a similar internal resolution. This mode generally looks fine - with no vignetting problems - though again, there are some issues such as 'black holes' in the ray-traced global illumination. This issue was there in the last patch, but it hasn't been addressed and if anything, seems to present more frequently than it did before. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Ultimately, there's the sense of general improvement - especially in the performance mode - and that's good news. Jedi: Survivor is in reasonable shape overall now, even if we aren't seeing the kind of night and day improvement over FSR 2 upscaling we were hoping for from PSSR when upscaling from lower pixel counts. This is clearly an ongoing project for Sony and we wonder how much the recently announced Amythest collaboration between PlayStation and AMD will yield benefits. We saw FSR 4 at CES 2025 and we were genuinely impressed with the Radeon team's 'AI Research Project'.Beyond Jedi: Survivor, we've seen a number of games address their own PSSR problems by either reverting to other upscaling solutions (the Silent Hill 2 remake went back to Epic's TSR for its performance mode) or offering the ability to choose between FSR and PSSR, as seen in Alan Wake 2, Avatar and Star Wars Outlaws. Will these - and other affected games - update with the latest version of PSSR? We'll report back if they do.0 Commentaires 0 Parts 158 Vue

TECHCRUNCH.COMWhat we know about the TikTok banWelcome back to Week in Review. This week, were looking at the impacts of the looming TikTok ban in the U.S., including the TikTok refugees moving to Chinese app RedNote, the surge of English speakers learning Mandarin on Duolingo, and more! Lets get into it.The Supreme Court upheld the law that will effectively ban TikTok tomorrow. The decision marks the end of TikToks monthslong legal fight against a law that essentially forces the app to shut down unless it divests its U.S. operations. Starting Sunday, it will be illegal for app stores and internet hosting services to distribute TikTok. The company warned that the app will go dark on Sunday, but its unclear what exactly will happen when the ban takes effect.American users are flocking to RedNote, a Chinese short-form video app also known as Xiaohongshu, making it the No. 1 free app on the U.S. App Store. RedNote hits a lot of the right notes for creators looking for a TikTok alternative: It has a layout thats similar to Pinterests, it is typically thought of as Chinas answer to Instagram, and it boasts a number of social shopping features. But the transition hasnt been easy for some people.TikTok users are using Duolingo to learn Chinese in increasing numbers amid their adoption of RedNote ahead of the TikTok ban. According to Duolingo, the app has seen roughly 216% growth in new Mandarin learners in the U.S. compared to this time last year, with a sharp spike in mid-January as RedNotes adoption took off. This is TechCrunchs Week in Review, where we recap the weeks biggest news. WWW.ZDNET.COMHow to upgrade your 'incompatible' Windows 10 PC to Windows 11 in 2025Mihaela Rosu/Getty ImagesOn October 14, 2025, Microsoft will stop delivering security updates to your Windows 10 PC unless you're willing to pay an exorbitant price to join the Extended Security Updates program. If you try to upgrade to Windows 11 on a PCthat's more than a few years old, you'll be told -- in no uncertain terms -- that your old PC doesn't qualify because its CPU isn't on the official list of compatible processors. Microsoft has made it abundantly clear that it will not revise those requirements. You will also hit roadblocks if your PC doesn't have a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0.Also: Can your old PC handle the Windows 11 upgrade? How to find out - before you tryThat might be the official policy, but -- as with everything Windows-related -- it pays to read the fine print. Those pesky restrictions prevent you from automatically upgrading to Windows 11 using Windows Update or the Windows 11 Installation Assistant. Yet there are fully supported workarounds for most PCs that are capable of running Windows 10, as I document inZDNET's Windows 11 FAQ.Over the past year or so, Microsoft has played a cat-and-mouse game with enthusiasts, adding occasional speed bumps that make it more difficult to bypass these compatibility checks. There are workarounds for most modern PCs, but some older devices, especially those built using AMD processors, might be out of luck. The instructions in this post take all those developments into account. Also:You can still upgrade old PCs to Windows 11, even if Microsoft says no: Readers prove itOf course, everything in this article requires that you be signed in as an administrator on the PC you want to upgrade.Which option should you choose? Please don't skip over this section. This article describes two upgrade options. To take advantage of the workaround described in option 1 below, your computer must meet all the other requirements for Windows 11.It must be configured to start up using UEFI, not a legacy BIOS configuration.Secure Boot must be supported, although it does not need to be enabled. (But seriously, folks, you should enable it.)A TPM must be enabled; version 1.2 is OK, but a system without any TPM or with the TPM disabled will fail. Also:Microsoft will start charging for Windows 10 updates next year. Here's how muchTo check these details on a PC you're considering upgrading, run the System Information utility, Msinfo32.exe, and look at the System Summary page. Pay special attention to the BIOS Mode value. If it says "Legacy," you'll need to reconfigure your system to UEFI mode (and convert your system disk from MBR to GPT partitioning) before you can install Windows 11 as a normal upgrade. To see whether your PC has a TPM enabled, run the Trusted Platform Module Management tool, Tpm.msc. If your computer includes a TPM and it's turned on, this app will display information about it. If there's no TPM, or if the TPM is disabled in firmware settings, you'll see a message that says "Compatible TPM cannot be found."If you're unable (or unwilling) to change from Legacy BIOS to UEFI, or if you have an older PC that doesn't have a TPM option at all, you'll need to use the second option, which takes advantage of an undocumented hack that allows you to bypass the compatibility checks and complete the upgrade. Skip to the "Option 2" section of this post for details on how to use the free Rufus utility to perform this upgrade.Note that a new set of restrictions, introduced as part of the Windows 11, version 24H2 update, require a CPU that supports specific instructions -- SSE4.2 and PopCnt. Most PCs with Intel CPUs that are from 2009 or later will meet this standard. AMD CPUs from 2013 or later should also meet these requirements. For details, see"Microsoft blocked your Windows 11 upgrade? This trusty tool can (probably) fix that."Also:Your Windows 10 PC can't be upgraded? You have 5 options before support ends in 2025If you plan to perform a clean installation of Windows 11, you can boot from installation media and run Windows Setup. That option skips the CPU compatibility check completely (but still requires a TPM and Secure Boot support). After the installation completes, you'll need to reinstall all your apps, restore your data files, and tweak settings to personalize your system preferences.Want to avoid all that hassle? Choose the option that's appropriate for your hardware.Option 1: Use this simple registry editBypass CPU checks and accept any TPM version with this registry edit. Please be aware that this option requires that you run the Setup program from within your current Windows installation. You can't boot from a USB flash drive and install Windows 11 this way. This process requires four steps. 1. Change one key in the Windows registry You need to make one small change to the Windows registry, as documented in thisMicrosoft support document. This change tells the Windows 11 Setup program to skip the check for compatible CPUs and to allow installation on a PC with an older TPM (version 1.2). The usual warnings apply when working with the registry; I recommend you make a complete backup before proceeding.Open Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and navigate to the following key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetupIf the MoSetup key, doesn't exist, you need to create it. Right-click the node for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup in the left-hand navigation pane, then choose New > Key. Name it MoSetup and press Enter. Also: Wiping your Windows laptop? Here's the simplest way to erase all personal dataSelect the MoSetup key and then right-click in any empty space in the pane on the right. Choose the option to create a new DWORD value. (Don't choose the QWORD option!)Replace the default name for that key by typing the text AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU and then press Enter. Then double-click the new value and change the "Value data" box to 1. The result should look like this: Show more Use this registry tweak to override the Windows 11 CPU compatibility check. You must have a TPM (any version) and Secure Boot must be enabled. Screenshot by Ed Bott/ZDNETClick OK to save your change, and then restart your PC. 2. Download the Windows 11 ISO On the PC you want to upgrade, go to the Windows 11 Download page (aka.ms/DownloadWindows11) and choose the option at the bottom of the page, "Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices." Save the ISO file in your Downloads folder.Note that this is a big file. Depending on the speed of your internet connection, the download could take a while. Show more 3. Mount the ISO file in File Explorer After the download completes, open File Explorer and double-click the ISO file you downloaded in the previous step. Doing so mounts the file as a virtual DVD drive in its own folder, with its own drive letter. Show more 4. Run Windows Setup In File Explorer, find the Setup.exe file and double-click it to begin the upgrade. You'll see a stern warning about compatibility issues, but you can safely click Accept to move past it. (For details on what that warning message really means, see "Is Microsoft really going to cut off security updates for your 'unsupported' Windows 11 PC?") After you click OK on that dialog box, your upgrade should proceed without any serious issues. If you're upgrading from the same edition (Home or Pro), you'll have three options: You can keep your apps, settings, and files (Full Upgrade); keep your data files but start fresh with apps and settings (Keep Data Only); or start completely fresh (Clean Install). Show more Option 2: Use the free Rufus utilityOn older PCs without a TPM and on PCs that don't support Secure Boot, you'll need to use an undocumented hack to bypass the compatibility checker. You can do this manually by replacing the Appraiserres.dll file (in the Sources subfolder on the Windows 11 installer drive) with a zero-byte version and then making a series of registry edits. But it's simpler to use the free, open-source Rufus utility to make a USB drive that includes this file.To get started, download Rufus version 4.6 or later. (Earlier versions won't work, thanks tochanges Microsoft made in October 2024to its compatibility checking tools. For details of how the newer versions work, see "Microsoft blocked your Windows 11 upgrade? This just-released tool can get the job done.") Do not try to upgrade by booting from that USB drive and performing a clean install; it won't work.)As is the case with the other option, you'll see a warning about compatibility issues. It's a scare tactic. (For details on what that warning message really means, see"Is Microsoft really going to cut off security updates for your 'unsupported' Windows 11 PC?")
