• 14 Changes That Will Make Your Macs Finder App Way More Useful
    lifehacker.com
Finder is your pathway to all your Mac's files. Yes, you can (and should) use Spotlight to quickly find and open files. But when it comes to actually managing and working with files, folders, and documents, the Finder app is essentialespecially since none of us know how to create a folder hierarchy anymore. It's good news, then, that Finder does a really good job of helping you organize files. But there are certain things about it that could be improved. What if every new Finder window didnt automatically default to the Recents folder? What if you could easily see the detailed path for a given folder? Or organize files using tags? Well, you can: heres how to customize what you see in the Finder app.How to customize the sidebar in Finder Credit: Khamosh Pathak The sidebar is where youll probably start interacting with Finder, so you should take some time to add the things you want to see there and remove whats cluttering it up.Go to Finder > Preferences > Sidebar. From here, select the sections that you want to show or hide. For example, you can remove the Tags section, limit the Locations items, and prune down the Favorites section. After you've done that, navigate to some of your frequently used folders and drag them to the Favorites section so youll always be able to access them easily. How to change Finder's default folder By default, Finder launches with the Recents folder ready to go. This may not be useful for youif you store all your files in the Downloads or Documents folder, it might be better to use one of those as a starting point.Go to Finder > Preferences > General > New Finder Windows Show. Here, choose any folder to serve as the default when you open a new Finder window. How to show the path bar in Finder Credit: Khamosh Pathak Every finder user should enable the path bar. It gives you a sense of where exactly you are in a file directory. Go to View > Show Path Bar to turn it on.Youll now see the path for every folder at the bottom of the Finder window. You can click on any folder from the path to navigate to it. You can also quickly copy the full pathname by clicking on a folder from the path and choosing the Copy as Pathname option. If you dont want to always see your file path, you can choose to display it selectively; just right-click on the file or folder name at the top of your Finder window to see a list of all the folders or files your current file/folderstems from. How to show the Finder status barBy default, the status bar in Finder only does two things: It shows you how many items there are in a folder (and how many are selected), as well as how much space is left on your Mac. Thats generally good info to have, so its worth turning on. To do so, go to View > Show Status Bar.How to customize the Finder toolbar Credit: Khamosh Pathak You can customize the Finder toolbar just like you can the one in Safari. Right-click in the empty space in the Finder toolbar and choose the Customize Toolbar option. Here, you can rearrange elements or drag or remove elements from the top. (Adding buttons for Delete and New Folder will be really helpful.)How to increase the font size in Finder Credit: Khamosh Pathak If you're using a 13-inch MacBook Air, you might find it difficult to view a long list of file names. Try increasing Finder's font size. To do this, go to View > Show View Options, and from the Text Size option, bump the text size up to a reasonable number (16 is probably a good choice).Open new Finder folders in windows instead of tabsFinder now has tabs, just like Safari. Simply double-click a folder while holding the Command key to start using them. However, if you'd rather go back to using windows with this shortcut instead, that's still an option. To revert back to the old behavior, go to Finder > Preferences and uncheck the Open folders in tabs instead of new windows option. Change folder view and sorting Credit: Khamosh Pathak Finder offers you powerful ways to customize how you view and sort items in your folders. First, the Views. Click on the Views icon in the top toolbar to choose between Icons, a List, Columns, and a Gallery. Each view is useful depending on the folder's content. Icons are the default, but you can switch to the Gallery view to make it easier to view images in a larger preview size. The Columns view shows you a multi-pane structure, so you can keep digging deeper into your folder structure while still keeping an eye on higher-level folders. List is the most powerful view, and it's what I usually default to. It shows all files and folders sorted based on different metrics, like name, last time updated, or size. You can click on any of these properties to change the sorting, and all this metadata is always available right next to the file name, which is super handy. You can also choose the Group icon from the toolbar to group files based on different criteria like name, application, tags, size, when the files were last updated, and more. Credit: Khamosh Pathak The only thing to note here as that all these view settings are on a per-folder basis, so you'll need to change the settings for each folder as you navigate through them. Though, once they are set, Finder will remember your settings going forward.Show hidden files on MacIf you use hidden files often, or you need to see hidden files in the system or Library folder, you can quickly use the keyboard shortcut Command+Shift+. (period) to make them appear or disappear. And if you're into keyboard shortcuts, try out the Marta app. It's a third-party alternative to the Finder app built around the idea of navigating files using the keyboard.Change default search locationUsing Finder means using its search feature, but you might find it a bit annoying without making some changes. By default, it searches only the current folder that you're in, not your entire Mac.Go to Finder > Settings > Advanced. In the "When performing a search" section, switch to the Search This Mac option. Or better yet, switch to Use the Previous Search Scope to make sure the Finder remembers whichever option you used last.Don't be afraid to use Tags Credit: Khamosh Pathak Don't sleep on Finder Tags. They are just as useful as the tags in your reminders app. Right-click on any file or folder to assign a colored tag to it. If you click on the Tags button, you can also create a new custom tag, with a color of your choice. Tags that are in use will automatically show up in the Finder sidebar for quick access.Tags are a great way to group similar files in one view, without moving them between folders. This way, you can collect all the files related to a project in one section, and then get rid of the tag when the work is done.Customize Quick Actions Credit: Khamosh Pathak Quick Actions is a relatively new addition to Finder, but already hosts one of the best new hidden features on the Mac. Right-click on an image, choose Convert Image, and you can convert a HEIC image to JPEG, or reduce an image's size with ease. But you can also click the Customize button to add more features to this menu. The best thing to add to Quick Actions, though, are Shortcuts. You can create shortcuts to resize images or move or manipulate files, helping automate your browsing process.Improve Quick LookQuick Look is one of my all-time favorite Finder features. You hit the Space bar, and instantly you're greeted with a preview of what's in the file you have selected. It's the fastest way to read through a PDF or see a video. By default, Quick Look doesn't work for all file types, but Mac developers have created lots of Quick Look extensions that help you preview ePubs, content in zip files, and more. We've highlighted the best Quick Look plugins in our dedicated guide. You can also use an indie app called Peek to add support for more than 600 file types.Pin Finder to all DesktopsIf you use multiple monitors on your Mac, you can pin the same Finder window to all desktops. Right-click on the Finder icon in the Dock and go to Options > All Desktops. Now, as you move between your desktops, the same Finder window will move with you.

  • The 65-inch LG C3 OLED TV is cheaper than ever right now
    www.engadget.com
The Super Bowl is just around the corner, and theres no better way to enjoy the game at home than watching them on a large TV particularly an OLED, thanks to its color accuracy. The 65-inch LG C3 OLED TV is again at the lowest price that we saw during last years holiday season. Its currently 20 percent off and down to $1,197. While this is the older C3 model from 2023, the newer C4 model costs more, and it remains a good choice if getting the absolute latest model isnt a priority. The LG C3 OLED TV supports Dolby Vision and HDR10, perfect for streaming shows and movies. The 4K panel also has a 120Hz refresh rate, which is great for console gaming, especially with a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S. To make the gaming experience smoother, theres NVIDIA G-Sync, AMD FreeSync Premium and VRR to prevent screen tearing. Theres a reason we selected it as one of the best gaming TVs, and it still holds true even with newer models on the horizon. • Trump just rebranded the U.S. Digital Service as DOGE
    www.fastcompany.com
President Donald Trump has brought the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to lifesimply by renaming an existing government agency. The U.S. Digital Service (USDS) is now known as DOGE, due to executive order Trump signed Monday that renamed the executive branchs technology agency. The USDS website has not been updated at time of writing. A landing page at doge.gov displays its new logo, featuring a puppy holding an American flag. The order states that federal agencies will each establish their own DOGE teams made up of a team leader, engineer, human resources specialist, and attorney who will coordinate with the USDS administrator. That administrator is tasked with starting a software modernization initiative to improve the quality and efficiency of government-wide software, network infrastructure, and information technology (IT) systems and promote inter-operability between agencies, according to the order.A screenshot of doge.gov on January 21st, 2025.In short, the administration is co-opting USDSs brand and infrastructure to form DOGE. This now makes DOGE as a concept sound less like the groundbreaking, red tape-cutting initiative first conceived than it does USDS under new name with a mission to improve the federal governments IT. Fast Company reached out to USDS asking if there is a plan to merge the two sites, and it did not respond to request to comment by time of publication.A PLAN TO IMPROVE EFFICIENCY, TEN YEARS AND GOINGUSDS originally launched in 2014 during former President Barack Obamas administration, and created standards to guide federal web design. It also worked to overhaul the federal governments 26,000 websites and cut through longstanding digital bureaucracy. Former President Joe Biden, meanwhile, launched the U.S. Digital Corps in 2021 to recruit young tech talent into government. There are ways that the department could deliver on its mission to make government leaner and more cost-efficient through improvements to its tech and web infrastructuresay, by making the delivery of social security more efficient and less onerous. But to make services more efficient, you need great people and great tech. Whether that happens remains to be seen. DOGES EVOLUTIONAlready, DOGE has taken on a different form than its original chairs, Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, first envisioned. (The name itself was a bit of a misnomer, as only Congress has the power to crate new government departments.) Musk and Ramaswamy had previously said in a November Wall Street Journal op-ed that DOGE would be an outside advisory group, which would recommend government reforms and $500 billion in annual spending cuts. But in that form, DOGE already faced lawsuits. One group alleged that, as an outside advisory group, it operated as a federal advisory committee in violation of federal law. DOGE, as its described in the executive order, gets around that by becoming an official government agency. (Ramaswamy has also left DOGE as he pursues a run for Ohio governor.)Musk responded to a post on X about the executive order establishing DOGE, writing Legit.

  • Is Elon Musk a government employee? Heres why it matters
    www.fastcompany.com
Elon Musk, the worlds richest man, is CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, but when it comes to his work with the federal government, his status is a lot less clear. While hes firmly in charge of Donald Trumps Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), whether he will actually become a government employee is still an unanswered question. That might seem like a technicality. Musk has Trumps ear and the two have basically been inseparable for months now. But as Trumps second term gets underway and DOGE begins to have actual power in the administration, whether or not Musk is named a special government employee could have some real impactsas well as lead to some legal challenges, some of which have already been filed.Since DOGE is not an official government department, Musk did not have to go through any sort of vetting or confirmation process. The department will report to the White House chief of staff Susie Wiles via an administrator (though its unclear if Musk will fill that role), according to the executive order establishing it. DOGE will actually be a reorganization (and renaming) of an existing division called the United States Digital Service, which was established in August 2014 by President Barack Obama.Elon Musk was initially expected to have an office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is part of the White House complex, but not part of the West Wing. Now, according to a report in the New York Times, Musk might be moving into the same building as Trump, giving him even more access to the executive office.Musks formal employment status will impact what sort of restrictions he could face. (Fast Company reached out to the White House inquiring about Musks employee designation and will update this story if we receive a reply.)If Musk becomes a special government employee, he would face conflict-of-interest restrictions that could impact several of his businesses, which have several billion dollars in government contracts. He also would have to file financial disclosure forms, unless he chose to take no salary (something he has indicated he is open to). Also, with special government employee status, Musk would be restricted by federal ethics laws, which make it illegal for any government employees to participate in official matters in which they, their families, or their organizations have a financial interest. (Trump, though, could give Musk a written waiver from those, according to a report in the Times.)But remaining a private citizen doing work for the government might not align with Musks goals, either. In doing so, he would run into a rule: the Federal Advisory Committee Act. This law requires advisory committees to make committee meetings open to the public, along with all documents and materials submitted to or produced by the department. As a special government employee, DOGE would have the option of conducting some business in full view of the public and some in a more private manner.Elon Musk has said DOGE will work with full transparency. DOGE, so far, has been largely operating in secret, aside from occasional posts on X.Of course, if opponents have their way, the whole question of Musks status as a special government employee could be moot. Minutes after Trump was sworn in on Monday, a lawsuit was filed by National Security Counselors, a public interest law firm, alleging DOGE violated federal transparency laws tied to the Federal Advisory Committee Act.DOGE, the suit alleges, has failed to allow the public to attend meetings, keep minutes, file a charter with Congress, and more, as Musk and crew began looking for potential cuts shortly after the election was called. Ideas for cuts, the Washington Post reports, were exchanged via encrypted messages on the Signal app. That suit is just one of four filed against DOGE on Monday. They hope to shut down the department until it begins to comply with the transparency rules.

  • OpenAI and Softbank are starting a $500 billion AI data center company
    www.theverge.com
A plan to build a system of data centers for artificial intelligence has been revealed in a White House press conference, with Masayoshi Son, Sam Altman, and Larry Ellison joining Donald Trump to announce The Stargate Project. Their companies, Softbank, OpenAI, and Oracle (respectively), along with MGX are listed as initial equity funders for $500 billion in investments over the next four years, building new AI infrastructure for OpenAI in the United States.According to a statement from OpenAI, Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI are the initial tech partners, with a buildout currently underway starting in Texas as other sites across the country are evaluated. It also says that Oracle, NVIDIA, and OpenAI will closely collaborate to build and operate this computing system.Separately, Microsoft announced an update to its partnership with OpenAI, saying that the key elements of their deal remain in place through 2030, covering our access to OpenAIs IP, our revenue sharing arrangements and our exclusivity on OpenAIs APIs all continuing forward. What is changing is that Microsoft says OpenAI has made a new, large Azure commitment that will continue to support all OpenAI products as well as training. However, their exclusive arrangement for new capacity is changing so that now Microsoft has a right of first refusal over OpenAI building new capacity. In a press conference announcing the project, which has been rumored since early last year, Son and Altman spoke directly to Trump, insisting that the project only happened because of his election victory.
