  • Everything we know about 'Alien: Earth,' which brings the xenomorphs to TV
    www.businessinsider.com
"Alien: Earth" is a new prequel TV series to the "Alien" franchise. It takes place two years before the first "Alien" movie is set.The FX series starts when a spaceship crashes on Earth with a xenomorph on board."Alien: Earth" is bringing the xenomorphs somewhere they've never been before: Television. The FX TV series developed by Noah Hawley, who created fan-favorite shows including "Legion" and "Fargo," will expand the "Alien" timeline to before Ridley Scott's original 1979 movie. It's a good time to be a fan of the franchise, since 2024 also saw the release of "Alien: Romulus," which surprised audiences with its ultra-gory sequences and jump scares. As the title suggests, the 2025 TV series brings the xenomorphs to Earth. The films often mention that if the deadly creatures make it to Earth, it will be game over for the human race. This will no doubt raise questions for sci-fi fans about the continuity of the long-running movie franchise. Here's everything we know about "Alien: Earth" so far.'Alien: Earth' is set two years before the first movie. The "Alien" timeline is starting to get quite messy with the various sequels and prequels. But Hawley is keeping things fresh by rolling back the clock so that "Alien: Earth" is set two years before the first movie. The first teaser for the series confirmed the year that it takes place with the ominous tagline: "In 2120, Mother Earth is expecting."1979's "Alien" takes place in 2122, and by giving the show a little breathing room from the movies, it can hopefully stand on its own two feet. The synopsis from FX reads: "When a mysterious space vessel crash-lands on Earth, a young woman (Sydney Chandler) and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet's greatest threat in FX's highly anticipated TV series 'Alien: Earth' from creator Noah Hawley."Hawley told Deadline in September: "There's something about seeing a xenomorph in the wilds of Earth with your own eyes. That is truly chilling to think of it moving here among us, and so I can't tell you under what circumstances you'll see that, but you'll see it and you're going to lock your door that night."The 'Alien: Earth' cast includes Timothy Olyphant, Sydney Chandler, and Alex Lawther. In November 2023, Deadline reported that Sydney Chandler will play Wendy, who has the brain of a child and the body of an adult. She is joined by "Scream" and "The Mandalorian" star Timothy Olyphant, who plays Kirsch, a synthetic android who looks after Wendy. They're joined by "Andor" actor Alex Lawther as a soldier called CJ, Samuel Blenkin as a CEO called Boy Kavalier, and Essie Davis as Dame Silvia.'Alien: Earth' starts in summer 2025.A new teaser for the show confirmed that it will start airing on Hulu in summer 2025, but didn't give a release date. The shows the xenomorph's perspective as it scrambles around a mysterious spaceship that is hurtling into the Earth's atmosphere. It's a unique approach to depicting the iconic creature, so hopefully, Hawley has some tricks up his sleeve to make "Alien: Earth" stand aside from its cinematic counterparts.

  • New Captain America and Superman movies getting Fortnite skins says rumour
    metro.co.uk
Pictured: us whenever a new Marvel character who isnt Squirrel Girl gets a Fortnite skin (Disney/YouTube)The two main stars of the new Captain America movie look like theyre getting their own skins, alongside a new one for Superman. With a new Marvel movie scheduled to arrive in cinemas in just a couple of weeks, there is one thing you can almost guarantee will come out of it and thats another Fortnite crossover. The battle royale has been inundated with Marvel themed character skins since 2019 and after Disney invested $1.5 billion into Epic Games last year you can bet thats not going to stop.As always, details on new skins appear to have leaked online first, with a new rumour claiming to know of two new Marvel skins that are coming to Fortnite as well as one from DC.The leak reveals that the two Marvel skins will be for Falcon and the Red Hulk, which is perfectly believable since those two characters are the main stars of Captain America: Brave New World. This comes courtesy of insider Nick Shpeshal Baker, who has accurately predicted Fortnite skins in the past, such as the Doom Slayer and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It was the seconded by prominent Fortnite dataminer ShiinaBR on X, who has backe dup Bakers claims. While the rumour lists Falcon as one of the skins, its presumably referring to the new Captain America, aka Sam Wilson, who took up the mantle in the Disney+ show The Falcon And The Winter Soldier. His old role of Falcon has been passed onto a new character, who will also appear in Brave New World. There arent any leaked images of the skins (yet), but thats certainly what ShiinaBR is implying, based on the accompanying images they shared of Red Hulk and the Sam Wilson Captain America, who keeps the shield but also boasts a wingsuit so he can still fly.More TrendingPresumably, both skins will become available in Fortnite around the time of Brave New Worlds release, which is scheduled for February 15.As for the new DC skin, Baker claims it will be Superman. That may sound odd since Superman was already added to Fortnite back in 2021, but its likely meant to be the version of the character thats set to appear in this years movie reboot from James Gunn.ShiinaBR claims theyve heard about the Superman skin too, but they havent been able to confirm it. It seems like a safe bet, though, considering DC has also loaned plenty of its characters to Fortnite. If so, this new Superman skin probably wont arrive for several more months, since the movie isnt slated until July. Aside from being yet another reboot, this Superman movie will also serve as the first film in DCs new cinematic universe. You can have your Fortnite skins; we just want this movie to be good (Picture: YouTube/Warner Bros. • Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Says Xbox Isnt Looking to Gatekeep Games on Its Hardware
    gizmodo.com
In an interview on the GamerTag Radio podcast, Xbox head honcho Phil Spencer reinforced the companys current strategy of releasing more first-party games on multiple platforms while telling the hosts that Xbox isnt done making, well, Xboxes. Early in the interview, Spencer responded to speculation that Microsoft would eventually exit the console-making business entirely. He said, I think its fundamental to what Xbox is. Its not lost on me that Box is in the brands name. He added that hardware is a critical part of what we do. With Xbox games appearing more frequently on PlayStation 5 and Switch, Phil Spencer told GTR hosts Danny Pea and Parris Lilly that, as much as he wants our hardware to win, hes noticed that in the last 20 years, its been really games first, not platform first. He stressed that the most successful games can be played across multiple consoles. He added, In the position Im in, I look at hardware as a critical part of what we do, not trying to gatekeep the games off other places. He reiterated that theres still some work to be done to make Xbox games more playable on existing handheld PCs like the Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go. This is good to hear, considering an Xbox handheld is likely still a few years away.Sony has followed a similar strategy over the past couple of years, with games like Ghosts of Tsushima, God of War, and Spider-Man 2 making their way to PC some time (often over a year) after being released on PlayStation 5. As making games becomes increasingly more expensive, releasing a game exclusively on a single console may not be financially viable. Spencer also expressed his excitement about the Switch 2 and confirmed that Xbox would support Nintendos new console in some capacity with its games.During the interview, we didnt hear much about Game Pass. Xboxs game subscriptionoverhauled its pricing model over the summer, arguably ruining the best deal in gaming. For years, Game Pass has been touted as the best reason to get an Xbox as a place to play its Day One exclusives; I can understand why we hear less about the service, especially with the companys current move to get games on other platforms that may not support Game Pass.

  • Lady Gaga Is OK With You Hating Joker: Folie Deux
    gizmodo.com
That the world is still talking about Joker: Folie Deux is a testament to our collective disappointment. Sure, some people enjoyed Todd Phillips brash sequel to his dark and gritty DC film, but for the most part the reviews and box office for the sequel vastly underperformed expectations. That was rough for fans, but youd have to think it was even rougher for the people who made the movie and thought they were doing something special. One of those people is Lady Gaga, the mega-superstar musician who drew on her acting talents to play Arthur Flecks (Joaquin Phoenix) love interest, Harley Quinn. Gaga is famous enough that she doesnt do a ton of interviews, so its taken a few months for one to come up and for her to reflect back on the reception to the film. And, as one may expect, shes completely at peace with it. People just sometimes dont like some things, Gaga said in a new interview with Elle Magazine. Its that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didnt connect in the way that you intended When [fear of failure] makes its way into your life, that can be hard to get control of. Its part of the mayhem. Mayhem is a good word for this situation. Not just in the context Gaga is using it inthat artists need to have a thick skin and take chancesbut also just the Joker 2 ride in general. After the surprise success of the original film, which made over a billion dollars and saw Phoenix win the Oscar for Best Actor, Phillips and Phoenix were hounded about doing a sequel. Then, finally, they caved. Anticipation grew as production ramped up, Gagas casting only added to that, and the first trailers made everyone incredibly excited. Then, of course, people saw it and their reactions were not good. Buzz quickly subsided, box office followed, and now its buried on Max to watch at anytime. It was quite the ride. What do you think about Gagas thoughts here though? Is failure a given with art? Do you consider Joker 2 that? Let us know below. Want more io9 news? Check out when to expect the latest Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, whats next for the DC Universe on film and TV, and everything you need to know about the future of Doctor Who.

(John Ruskin, The Seven Lamps of Architecture)Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The countryside surrounding Grado is so flat that the mountains appear like a cut-out backdrop on the horizon. The sea is out of sight but palpably close, and everything here benefits from fertile land, just lightly brushed by the salt air. The orderly boundaries of the large garden one corner of the ancient agricultural centuriation that stretches to the lagoonbarely contain a wild disorder, the untamed chaos of nature left to itself for decades. The vegetation is so lush that, on approaching, the roof of the manor house can only just be glimpsed. Almost nothing of the original building remained: after heavy remodeling in the 1960s that irreparably altered its image, the villa had been abandoned for decades. The roof and openings were on the verge of collapse and the early 20th-century typological features were entirely lost. Only inside could the traces of its origins still be discerned: the doors, floors, and a staircase with a carved wooden railing sketched the outlines of a history that seemed erased from the outside.Save this picture! The safety intervention requested by the municipal administration aims to provide a straightforward solution to preserve the building. This was achieved through the reconstruction of the roof, the replacement of the windows, and the restoration of the external surfaces. Securing a building is far more than merely repairing evident damage; it is a comprehensive effort to ensure its protection and structural durability over time. It means enabling the building to endure, to survive until someone else takes it over and brings it to life with new stories. It is about pausing the accelerated decay caused by neglect and abandonment and protecting the structure to pass it on to the future. This intervention was designed to fit into a specific temporal phase in the life of a building: after the original construction and the changes that altered its envelope, the project focuses on addressing "necessary states" in both functional and aesthetic terms. It works on the ancestral role of architecture as a mediator between form and function, through the history and narratives that every artifactand every architectcarries. Beyond the technical solution, the project sought to do more: to rebalance the building's envelope, bringing it back to a neutral state that marks the start of a new phase in its existence. The white cube now shines as though newly arrived, while the landscape recognizes it as an ancient, dominant element. It merges with nature, not through continuity but juxtaposition, in a stereometric rigor that doesn't clash with the garden's wildness but instead engages in constant dialogue. The vegetation doesn't touch the structure, except for the shadows it casts, yet it pervades it with its presence, enveloping and protecting it.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Depending on the movement of the sun, everything changes in the relationship between the house and the garden. Branches and leaves create an ever-shifting design on the white canvas of the facades, while inside, the trees' foliage becomes living paintings framed by the villa's large windows, gazing out at the landscape. The interior remains untouched a new chapter in its story will address it in the future. In this prolonged moment frozen in time, the building will continue to exist, silent but safe a refuge of calm and order within the wild essence surrounding it. Once the shutters flush with the external cladding, are closed, the villa transforms into an impenetrable treasure chest, a contemporary castle awaiting its next invaders. • Trouble with Your New Year's Resolution? Here's How to Make It Achievable
    www.discovermagazine.com
According to one survey, only around 9 percent of people achieve their New Years resolutions, even though around a third of us attempt them. Most of our resolutions revolve around improving physical and mental health, which are important life changes that can have a positive impact on the lives we live.So this year, instead of just giving up on the important changes that might improve the quality of your life, why not tweak them according to science to make them more achievable? Why We Can Fail at New Years ResolutionsPart of the reason that we fail to keep our resolutions is because they arent that well thought out. We tend to choose drastic, rigid goals that dont have enough flexibility and would be difficult to add into our daily lives, says Carla Marie Manly, a clinical psychologist and author of the book Joy From Fear: Create the Life of Your Dreams by Making Fear Your Friend. She adds that we also tend to fear failure, which makes us even more rigid. When we have even one slip up as were rewiring our brains to create new habits, we feel like failures and tend to give up, says Manly. One way to make healthier, more sustainable resolutions is to realize that were all imperfect and that we will make mistakes, but the goal is to transition into healthier habits. Choose resolutions that are more realistic and reachable because small steps are always better than no steps.Read More: How to Improve Your Mental HealthCreating More Achievable ResolutionsWere more likely to achieve goals that add in something rather than take something away, according to a December 2020 article published in the journal PLOS One.One of the main findings in our study was that among participants with approach-oriented goals, there was a statistically significant higher ratio of successful resolvers compared to those with avoidance-oriented goals, says Martin Oscarsson, lead study author and a PhD Student at Stockholm University.Approach-oriented goals allow us to do more of something, for example, adding in yoga or running, rather than avoidance-oriented goals, which involve avoiding an activity like drinking less, stopping smoking, or avoiding fried foods.Goal StrategiesAnother strategy is to use an approach-oriented goal to achieve an avoidance-oriented goal. For example, if you want to drink less, add in a yoga class during your happy hour, or if you want to eat healthier meals during the day, add meal planning to your Sunday routine so that you have healthy meals at the ready when youre busy during the work week.If you want to stress less, consider what you would do more of if you were less stressed, says Oscarsson. Maybe you would spend more time with your family, read more, or choose another hobby to reduce stress.Or if you want to quit smoking, youre not just missing the nicotine, youre missing the breaks that you took during the workday or the social aspect of smoking. This means that when youre planning on achieving a goal, you need to look for ways to replace whats missing from your life, like taking a walk during your smoke break or calling a friend to replace those missed social interactions. If youre going to stop something, you have to have something to replace it with, which means spending more time planning and thinking about the New Years resolutions you hope to achieve. While Oscarsson says that Americans are the most likely to make resolutions, its a global phenomenon that largely revolves around health goals. Millions of people resolve to make positive changes at the beginning of each year, and Oscarsson says, Finding ways to increase their likelihood of success is a good thing.Article Sources:Our writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards.
