• Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector review station to station
    metro.co.uk
Citizen Sleeper 2 game of the year already? (Fellow Traveller)One of the best indie titles of recent years hits new heights with an excellent sequel that becomes the first must-play video game of 2025.Despite its unusual gameplay and meditative pace, Citizen Sleeper was something of a breakthrough for UK developer Gareth Damian Martin. The dice-based space adventure racked up four BAFTA nominations and a nod at The Game Awards, albeit in the patronising Games For Impact category. The place where thoughtful, genre-defying games are lumped together and given a disengaged pat on the head, so they dont disturb the crowd pleasers. After multiple slices of DLC, Citizen Sleepers success has led to a somewhat unconventional sequel. Its bigger, richer, and builds on the originals foundations, but theres also more friction shouldering you into its survival mechanics. If you didnt play the original, Citizen Sleeper is a tabletop-inspired role-playing game driven by text-based sci-fi storytelling. You play as a Sleeper, an emulation of a human mind housed within an artificial body, who is on the run from the corporation that gave you life. This time though, youre primarily on the run from a criminal gang leader called Laine, who is trying to control your synthetic existence for his own mysterious gains. In your escape for a better life, you find yourself in the Starward Belt, a sequence of crumbled settlements at the edge of the war-torn Helion system. Instead of controlling the character directly, the game is played via an overhead view of a space station, with no action gameplay to speak of.The tabletop-style loop is hinged around fixed dice youre given at the start of every cycle, which you can use in places of interest via the aerial view, such as shops and other facilities, in order to progress the story or maintain your survival. The higher the dice number is and if your character class has the relevant skill the better your chances are of completing a task successfully, whether thats working a shift in a factory for cash or trying to hack into a device as part of a story mission.Tension comes from balancing the completion of these tasks while ensuring you have the resources to survive through each cycle, which you manually end yourself once you have used all your dice. If luck isnt on your side or you gamble with a low die, you might be punished with energy loss, which costs supplies, and in turn resources, to rejuvenate. The sequel introduces other layers of stress. If your energy runs out or if you fail certain jobs a literal stress gauge will increase and slowly erode health bars attached to your five dice. If left untreated, youll quickly find yourself on a slippery slope, with broken slots and limited options on how to crawl back to safety. To add to the pressure, theres also a new glitch mechanic. Some actions will boost a glitch meter, increasing the chance of a malfunctioning die occupying one (or several) of your slots. These only give you a one-in-five chance of success, so they become a very tempting gamble when you are clamouring for a hail Mary against the cyclical clock. These are well implemented as a death penalty too, with every wipe out (if all your dice break) applying a permanent glitch you have to contend with for the rest of the game. If you fancy an extra challenge, the highest difficulty option ends your run entirely if you die, heightening the stakes even further. If the first Citizen Sleeper was relatively relaxed in its difficulty, Starward Vector isnt afraid to squeeze your supplies and throw you into pressured situations where youre one die throw away from failure. It does still have stretches where it eases up and relishes in the cerebral atmosphere, but the overall bump in difficulty feels like a considered swerve to accentuate the role-playing systems at the games core. The graphics may not dazzle but the music is great (Fellow Traveller)These revamped systems also make every choice, whether in the dice meta-game or in the narratives dialogue options, more meaningful and consequential. The original Citizen Sleeper, while great, was largely superfluous as a role-playing game, with tacked-on character classes and skill trees which you could mostly ignore. Here, everything is cohesive and complimentary to the overall design, in a way that is far more accomplished than its predecessor. The added intensity baked into the mechanics coalesces with the narrative too. Yes, youre a Sleeper thats on the run, but your body is also in a gradual state of decline after an attempted reboot causing memory loss and other malfunctions, which you gradually unpack as you encounter characters across the adventure. While the overall premise is similar to the original, the conceit is more compelling due to the sequels expanded scope. Instead of being pinned to one location throughout, this sequel, in a similar vein to Mass Effect 2, sees you traverse to different space stations across the Starward Belt, where you encounter different characters who can join your crew. Every crew member you acquire can then be utilised in isolated contract missions, who will team up with you with their own dice and specific attributes to complete the job at hand. These contract missions act as concentrated doses of stress between the downtime of gathering resources, where youll be trying to hack into wreckage without alerting patrolling drones and mining for supplies in a race against a rival ship, among other tasks. Your decision over which crewmates you take on missions often boils down to balancing attributes to counter the weaknesses in your build, but you will also start to form favourites based on their personalities.Between these isolated jobs and the greater freedom in its design, Citizen Sleeper 2 is a far more robust gaming experience when compared to the original. You are essentially just travelling between different menu screens, sure, but the extra layer of consideration space travel brings to the table with each trip requiring you to refuel your ship only reinforces the convincing illusion that you arent simply clicking on widgets.Like the first game, the characters you meet are the soul of Citizen Sleeper. These are all individuals who, like the protagonist, are trying to deal with situations beyond their control, in one form or another, as they search for purpose and solace on the periphery of an escalating war. Its pertinent and, at times, disarmingly touching especially in its final act. The dialogue choices you make, which are occasionally skill dependent, alter other characters arcs in notable ways too, giving you the incentive for repeat runs with other character classes.None of this would work without the exceptional writing, which always feels uncluttered and purposeful. Its particularly impressive when, for long stretches, youre simply reading text off a screen with static character artwork (excellently drawn by Guillaume Singelin) and occasional white flashes for dramatic effect, yet it manages to be more absorbing than many fully realised 3D worlds.More TrendingIts a testament to the writing but also the subtle soundtrack by Amos Roddy, which is all spacious synth trickles and atmospheric soundscapes that allows your imagination to fill in the blanks. If the original Citizen Sleeper was an engrossing but flawed introduction to its hybrid tabletop concept, Starward Vector represents a true original flourishing into its full potential. Like the best sequels, it builds on and refines whats come before, but it also charts its own distinctive paththrough the specific choices of its design. It might only be January, but this game of the year contender deserves to land with maximum impact.Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward VectorIn Short: A fantastic sequel which succeeds in providing a mechanically deeper role-playing experience, while still being one of the best-written games around.Pros: Revamped role-playing systems and increased challenge heighten the original games best qualities. Absorbing presentation with a better open structure. Excellent writing and a great cast of characters, who play a more meaningful role in the story.Cons: Some of the space stations can feel somewhat barren, with few activities. • BioWare prepares for Mass Effect 4 by cutting its own staff
    metro.co.uk
All eyes are on Mass Effect now (EA)Despite promises that many BioWare staff have found new roles elsewhere at EA, it seems quite a number of them have simply been let go.Last week, EA admitted that both EA Sports FC 25 and Dragon Age: The Veilguard havent been performing as well as the company hoped. While the former is by far the most shocking, considering EAs football games are one of its biggest sources of revenue, its the latter that has had the most immediate impact.EA didnt share exact sales figures, only saying The Veilguard engaged approximately 1.5 million players during the third quarter of the fiscal year (October 2024 to December 2024), which is almost half of what EA wanted. The Veilguards failings have led to developer BioWare undergoing a reorganisation, as they continue work on the next Mass Effect, and while at first it was implied this wouldnt involve any redundancies that doesnt seem to be the case.BioWare general manager Gary McKay broke the news of the reorganisation yesterday in a blog post, with a far more positive spin on the situation and without any acknowledgement of The Veilguards underperformance. Now that Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been released, a core team at BioWare is developing the next Mass Effect game under the leadership of veterans from the original trilogy, including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley, and others, wrote McKay.The new Mass Effect is obviously a delicate project within BioWare. Its been more than a decade since the original and beloved trilogy ended, and 2017s Mass Effect: Andromeda was a mixed bag that failed to resonate with fans.Youd think BioWare would want all hands-on deck for it and yet McKay wrote: Given this stage of development, we dont require support from the full studio. That means an unknown number of staff have been taken off the game to work on other unknown projects.McKay added that the studio has managed to find new positions for some of its staff at other departments within EA, but this still means BioWare was subject to layoffs.Neither BioWare nor EA have openly acknowledged this, but a number of BioWare employees have since posted to social media saying theyre looking for new work. This includes:Over on Reddit, Insider Gamings Mike Straw also claims to have heard that at least a few dozen were let go from BioWare and there could potentially be more layoffs to follow.IGN has asked EA for specifics on BioWares restructuring, but all the company has said is, The studio has the right number of people in the right roles to work on Mass Effect at this stage of development. Its not clear how far along the next Mass Effect actually is. It was unveiled with a short cinematic trailer in 2020 and BioWare has only shared even vaguer teases since. Not to mention, BioWare already suffered from layoffs in 2023, losing roughly 20% of its workforce. McKay justified this at the time by saying it was done to meet the needs of our upcoming projects and continue to hold ourselves to the highest standard of quality; phrases he reiterated in yesterdays blog post.Frankly, with the way BioWares been handled in the last decade, its a miracle the studio hasnt been shut down yet. After Mass Effect: Andromedas disappointing launch, BioWare took a crack at multiplayer live service game Anthem in the hopes of rivalling Bungies Destiny.More TrendingAnthem launched in 2019, garnered mixed reviews, failed to meet sales expectations, and despite promises of a substantial reinvention, was abandoned in early 2021.Dragon Age: The Veilguard (or Dreadwolf as it was originally subtitled) became BioWares next priority, but that was hardly smooth sailing either. Reports claim it was envisioned as a multiplayer live service game, but was transformed into a traditional single-player experience, partially due to Anthems failure. The game then fell off the grid for years, only appearing at last years Xbox showcase with a new subtitle and a poorly received trailer. As a result, theres now more pressure on Mass Effect to succeed than ever before. And if it underperforms as well, BioWare may well not get another chance. What did you think of the new Dragon Age? • Trump Blames DEI for Plane Crash That Killed 67 in Ridiculous Press Conference
    gizmodo.com
By Matt Novak Published January 30, 2025 | Comments (8) | President Donald Trump speaks to reporters about the collision of an American Airlines flight with a military Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan National Airport, in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House on January 30, 2025 in Washington, DC. Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images President Donald Trump held a rambling, unhinged press conference Thursday about the midair collision between a commercial plane and military helicopter in Washington, D.C. Wednesday night that killed 67 people. The entire press conference was a long series of excuses about why Trumps administration wasnt to blame for the crash and the president repeatedly said diversity in hiring of air traffic controllers was to blame. The FAA is actively recruiting workers who suffer severe intellectual disabilities, psychiatric problems, and other mental and physical conditions under a diversity and inclusion hiring initiative spelled out on the agencys website. Can you imagine? Trump said. Trump said the Democratic presidents that preceded him were to blame for the crash because they instituted policies that hired people who were unqualified to be air traffic controllers. You had a helicopter and a plane. That shouldnt have happened, Trump said. And well see. Were going to look into that and were going to see. But certainly for an air traffic controller, we want the brightest, the smartest, the sharpest. Somebody thats psychologically superior. And thats what were going to have. The helicopter and a plane Trump was referring to included an American Airlines flight carrying 64 people and a U.S. Army helicopter carrying three people. Trump said the helicopter should have been at a different height, while also blaming DEI for the crash.Reporters in the room repeatedly pushed Trump on his claims that DEI initiatives had somehow caused the crash, including Kaitlan Collins from CNN. You are blaming Democrats and DEI policies and air traffic control and seemingly the member of the U.S. military who was flying that Black Hawk helicopter. Dont you think youre getting ahead of the investigation right now? Collins asked. Trump deflected and said Collins was asking stupid questions.Another reporter in the room asked about why Trump was blaming members of the military for the crash. You then said perhaps the helicopter pilots were the ones who made the mistakes. Thats why Im trying to figure out how you can come to the conclusion right now that diversity had something to do with this crash, the reporter asked. Because I have common sense, okay? Trump replied. And unfortunately, a lot of people dont. We want brilliant people doing this. This is a major chess game at the highest level. REPORTER: I'm trying to figure out how you can come to the conclusion right now that diversity had something to do with this crash TRUMP: Because I have common sense, ok? And unfortunately a lot of people don't pic.twitter.com/bVph92zAFG Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) January 30, 2025 Trump continued by rambling about computer systems he clearly knows nothing about. When you have 60 planes coming in during a short period of time and theyre all coming in different directions, and youre dealing with very high-level computer work and very complex computers, Trump said. And one of the other things I will tell you is that the systems that were built, I was going to rebuild the entire system. And then we had an election that didnt turn out the way it should have. But they didnt build the systems properly. A large contingent from the clown car of the Trump regime was also at Thursdays press conference, including Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Something the President said that I think bears re-emphasizing, which is that when you dont have the best standards in who youre hiring, it means on the one hand youre not getting the best people in government, but on the other hand it puts stresses on the people who are already there, Vance said.Sean Duffy, the former reality TV star and recently confirmed Secretary for the Department of Transportation, also spoke forcefully while pretending he was an important voice of authority who knew what he was doing. Duffy has no background or expertise to be the Transportation Secretary, aside from perhaps being on a reality TV show called Road Rules, but was confirmed anyway, including by a large number of Democrats. We will not accept excuses, Duffy said in the middle of a press conference that was nothing but making excuses. We will not accept passing the buck, Duffy continued while passing the buck. We are going to take responsibility at the Department of Transportation and the FAA to make sure we have the reforms that have been dictated by President Trump in place to make sure that these mistakes do not happen again, Duffy said, trying to give credence to Trumps absurd arguments about diversity being the cause of the crash. Trumps administration instituted a hiring freeze on air traffic controllers in the earliest days of coming to power. Ranking members of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure even issued a statement raising serious concerns about safety on Jan. 22 about the hiring freeze and calling out the ostensible reason for the move: DEI. Hiring air traffic controllers is the number one safety issue according to the entire aviation industry, wrote Rep. Rick Larsen, a Democrat from Washington. Instead of working to improve aviation safety and lower costs for hardworking American families, the Administration is choosing to spread bogus DEI claims to justify this decision. The FAA had been operating without an administrator but Trump named Chris Rocheleau for the post during his press conference.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Matthew Gault Published January 30, 2025 By AJ Dellinger Published January 29, 2025 By Matt Novak Published January 29, 2025 By Matt Novak Published January 28, 2025 By Matt Novak Published January 27, 2025 By AJ Dellinger Published January 24, 2025

The project was developed as a part of the Postgraduate Program Building Beyond Borders at Hasselt University in collaboration with BC Studies & Materials. The site of the intervention was the garden of the old vicarage (Pastorie) in Helchteren, Belgium. The vicarage had been abandoned for several years, but the local community aims to bring back life to this building and create a vibrant community center. To initiate this transformation, BBB students were tasked to reactivate its garden.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! After months of research and community meetings, the design emerged in two parts: a pavilion situated deep in the garden among the trees, offering a serene retreat, and an earth oven positioned closer to the Pastorie, serving as a prominent landmark visible from the street, like a flag signaling the reawakening of the site. The two structures were built by students with support from residents, while numerous local companies and organizations contributed to the project in various capacities. Beyond its participatory nature, the project placed a strong emphasis on the materials that were used and the way they were sourced. Priority was given to local bio-based, geo-based, and reclaimed materials recovered from the buildings planned for demolition.Save this picture!Save this picture! No concrete was poured into the ground; instead, screw foundations were installed on one side of the pavilion, while the other side was supported by a foundation constructed from reclaimed materials topped with precast concrete elements. The pavilion's reversible design allows for deconstruction, removal, and reuse, reducing waste and impact on the site. This approach embodied the project's ethos of urban harvesting - recovering and utilizing building materials from urban environments.Save this picture! The wooden structure of the pavilion was assembled from scrap wood donated by a local construction company, reflecting the project's dedication to circular construction. By repurposing this second-hand wood, the project not only reduces waste but also extends the lifespan of this valuable material. The roofing was made from shakes that were manually crafted from logs sourced from the local forest. The bench inside the pavilion, made from compressed earth bricks (CEBs) serves a dual purpose. It adds to the structure's aesthetic and functional value while its weight helps anchor the wooden construction, working in tandem with the screw foundations to prevent the pavilion from being lifted by strong winds.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Similarly, the earth oven's foundation and plinth were built using reclaimed materials, mirroring the approach developed for the pavilion. The oven itself was built primarily from molded earth bricks (MEBs) and was finished with a layer of lime plaster to ensure its durability against weather conditions. This project emphasizes the importance of thoughtful material use and community engagement in building a truly regenerative future. It serves as a model for how architecture can be both environmentally responsible and socially inclusive, fostering resilient communities that are deeply connected to their built and natural environment.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeMaterialsWoodConcreteMaterials and TagsPublished on January 30, 2025Cite: "Building Beyond Pastorie Pavilion / Building Beyond Borders Hasselt University" 30 Jan 2025.
