• Thinking about merging finances with your partner? Here’s what to consider.
    www.vox.com
In the name of love, couples make all sorts of arrangements, from which side of the bed each partner sleeps on to who does the food shopping and laundry. But, according to Ramit Sethi, author of Money for Couples, couples talk far less often about their finances. Ill tell you that most couples do not have substantive conversations about money ever, Sethi says. And when they do, its usually after something has gone wrong, like when a bill goes unpaid or a secret purchase is made. One pivotal financial decision that awaits many couples in long-term relationships is whether or not they will merge finances. Most consider the maneuver ahead of milestones like moving in together, marriage, or having kids, but the conversation can also be prompted if one partner has lost a job or is taking time off work to go back to school. Every pair will have their own reasons for or against combining bank accounts and there are a variety of ways to go about it.The decision may be one that triggers emotions like anxiety or shame, experts say, so it shouldnt be made lightly. This is one of the most significant financial transitions or changes that we experience in our lives, says financial therapist Amanda Clayman, going from a financial me to a financial we.Do you have a clear financial picture? Long before ever considering combining finances, you should have a pretty good idea of your partners financial situation and vice versa. You should be transparent about each persons income, saving habits, and debt, including how theyre planning to pay it off or if they might accumulate more, says financial planner Natasha Knox.Clayman describes the financial arrangements most couples use as a one pot, two pot, or three pot system. One pot is obviously everything goes into one pot, she says. Two pots is we keep everything separate, and three pots is we have a joint pot, and then we each maintain our individual kind of autonomy. Of course, you can always open multiple joint accounts for various expenses, like a vacation fund or home renovation savings. Think about the pros and cons for each system. Some scenarios where couples might want to keep their money separate, according to expertsIf youre established in your financial routinesIf you or your partner have been divorced and your post-separation finances are complicatedIf you or your partner has experienced financial infidelity or financial abuse (when a person has control over their partners finances)If your partner has a serious addiction that puts you and your family at riskHowever, Sethi recommends that each of you should keep an account thats totally private to use for whatever reason you want. Only you have access to it, your partner does not, he says. But its never secret. If you are weighing whether to open a joint account, you should have a candid discussion about what fairness looks like. Will both parties be expected to contribute equally or will the higher earner commit to a larger amount? What happens if one person suffers a financial setback or their circumstances change? For example, if one of you loses your job or receives a large medical bill? Is that person expected to support themselves from their individual savings or can they draw from the joint account? This is one of the most significant financial transitions or changes that we experience in our lives. It is really important for people to understand their full financial household picture, Knox says, and if they dont understand that, they cant really make reasonable decisions together.A part of this financial picture is each of your money baggage. Discuss how your past financial experiences shaped your relationship with money today, suggests Megan Ford, a clinical assistant professor and director of the Love and Money Center at the University of Georgia. For example, try to understand the context in which your partner might have accumulated debt or the reasons youre anxious about making big purchases. Finally, look toward the future. What do you want to spend money on? What purchases make you happy? What are your short- and long-term money goals? This can range from a robust retirement savings to a lavish vacation. Another early consideration, according to Ford, is to discuss the upsides of combining finances. Be sure to also address potential downsides and any negative emotions that arise, too.For instance, it may be simpler to open a joint checking account from which utility payments can be automatically drawn each month. There could also be emotional upsides, like feeling more secure in your relationship if you merged finances in any capacity. Dont ignore your feelings as you think through these decisions. If youre unsure youll be together long-term, it may not make sense to open a joint account even if it might make your life easier in the interim. Whenever emotions arise, ask yourself why, Clayman suggests, instead of assuming trepidation means youre making a bad decision. Are you anxious because youre uncomfortable relinquishing some control over your money? Perhaps you agree to create a system where you and your partner only contribute a specific amount to a joint account and keep the rest of your finances separate. Money is going to surface feelings, Clayman says. What we need to develop is a way to meet that with self-compassion and some inquiry to find out more. How much financial privacy are you comfortable with? With completely disentangled finances, the buck literally stops with you. But if another person is relying on you to pay bills, the mortgage, and contribute to the vacation fund, you need to be prepared for transparency. Whatever system you use to divide or combine your money, Sethi believes both partners should know about every account each person has. Problems can arise when couples arent totally honest with each other. Financial infidelity when couples lie about their purchases or hide debt can stem from feeling ashamed of the amount of money you spent on a jacket or deeper issues like a gambling addiction. To avoid these financial secrets, its important for couples not to judge each other for purchases they may deem frivolous or unnecessary, says Megan McCoy, an assistant professor at Kansas State University. Instead, understand why these purchases are so important to your partner. This may be a situation where you may opt for private accounts for personal discretionary spending. For more serious financial issues, you may want to devise a plan for discussing the problem with your partner in a direct, but non-accusatory tone and seeking the help of a mental health professional.RelatedWho pays?Maintaining trust and transparency with your money doesnt mean demanding perfection from your partner, Clayman says. When people are expected to adhere to rigid, nearly impossible standards, they may hide purchases they think their partner wont like. Then we get a lot of secrecy in relationships, Clayman says. The best case is when [you admit] I am an imperfect financial person, because we all are, and I am looking for a person with whom my complexity and their complexity can at least be compatible.Do you have a plan?If you feel confident that you want to combine finances in some capacity, youll want to outline exactly how youll do it and when. To what extent will you merge money? Will you open up a new account at one of your established banks or will you explore another bank? How many joint accounts will you open and how much will each person contribute and when? For what purposes will those accounts serve? Give yourself a timeline for which youll take next steps, Clayman says. Set deadlines for yourself: By next month, well have had more conversations about money. The following month, well discuss how exactly well combine our money. The month after that, well open the account. You could practice looking at your numbers together for a while, Clayman says, before you jump into open[ing] up a bank account and move everything over there. This gives you space to work through any lingering emotions and for potential nerves to wear off. During this on-ramp, set a date for when youll check in to review if this structure works for you. At this point, you can address any points of conflict. There are no right or wrong paths here, experts stress. Instead its about finding a way to manage the financial decisions in your unit that are efficient and comfortable for all parties involved. • Capcom to showcase new Onimusha next week but where is Resident Evil 9?
    metro.co.uk
Onimusha is set to return in 2026 (Capcom)Monster Hunter Wilds and Onimusha: Way Of The Sword will be shown in two separate Capcom presentations next week, as fans hope for Resident Evil 9 news.Ahead of the launch of Monster Hunter Wilds in late February, Capcom has announced two showcase presentations for next Tuesday.First off, a 20-minute Capcom showcase will take place on February 4, 2025, which will feature updates on the recently announced Onimusha: Way Of The Sword, Street Fighter 6 DLC, Capcom Fighting Collection 2, and Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics (likely because of the belated Xbox One version). This will be followed by a 15-minute presentation for Monster Hunter Wilds, led by producer Ryozo Tsujimoto. He will introduce a new trailer for the game and information on the second open beta, which kicks off on Friday, February 7 in the UK.Despite talk of multiple titles, the main draw for the initial showcase is Onimusha. This reboot of the samurai action game was announced last year at The Game Awards, and is scheduled to be released sometime in 2026.The series last mainline entry was 2006s Onimusha: Dawn Of Dreams on the PlayStation 2, although a remaster of the first game came out in 2018. Capcom is also developing a VR entry entitled Onimusha VR: Shadow Team, so Capcom is certainly pushing for a franchise comeback. While it seems unlikely, considering it isnt mentioned, some fans are also hoping for news on the future of Resident Evil during the presentation. Resident Evil 9 is currently in development, while theres rumours that remakes of Resident Evil Zero and Code: Veronica are also in the works.https://twitter.com/CapcomUSA_/status/1884769389930774934Considering Monster Hunter Wilds is likely Capcoms main priority right now (Monster Hunter: World is the biggest-selling game in the companys history) theres little chance any news about Resident Evil will arrive until after Wilds launches on February 28, 2025.If the series makes a no-show at this event however, it could crop up at a future State Of Play presentation. Resident Evil Village was announced during a reveal event for the PlayStation 5 back in 2020, so its possible the sequel could also debut at a Sony showcase.Notable insider NateTheHate, who was correct around the Switch 2 reveal date, previously claimed a State Of Play is planned for February at some point, although he gave no specific date.More TrendingSony has traditionally held a State Of Play event within the first three months of the year. Last year, one aired on January 31, while 2023 and 2022 saw presentations in February and March, respectively, so its likely another will happen this year around the same time. Resident Evil Zero is rumoured to be the next remake (Capcom)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.GameCentralSign up for exclusive analysis, latest releases, and bonus community content. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. • No Opioids, No Addiction: FDA Approves First New Type of Painkiller in Decades
    gizmodo.com
To treat acute pain, doctors in the U.S. commonly prescribe opioids: powerful painkillers with dangerous side effects including serious risk of addiction and overdose. Now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has green-lighted a promising alternative: a new non-opioid pain medication. The FDA has approved a new type of drug called suzetrigine, branded Journavx, to treat acute pain in adults without the risk of addiction. Suzetrigine represents the first new class of pain medicine approved by the agency in over two decades, as well as the first medication of its kind ever approved. The announcement marks a significant milestone in the development of safer pain management, as detailed in a statement the FDA released yesterday. This is an incredible day for patients and physicians alike who now have an approved non-opioid treatment that delivers effective acute pain relief and a favorable safety profile without addictive potential, Jessica Oswald, a member of the Vertex Acute Pain Steering Committee, said in a Vertex statement. Vertex Pharmaceuticals is the Boston-based biotech company that developed the newly approved drug. I believe JOURNAVX could redefine the management of pain and become a foundational treatment option for people with all types of moderate-to-severe acute pain, where options aside from opioids have been so desperately needed, she added. Since 1999, hundreds of thousands of Americans have died from opioid overdose. Despite the epidemic, doctors in the U.S. dispensed 125 million opioid prescriptions in 2023 alone. Opioids activate receptors in the brain to block pain signals and cause the release of endorphinsthe bodys feel-good, natural painkillerswhich is why we risk becoming addicted. Suzetrigine, on the other hand, selectively blocks sodium channels on pain-sensing neurons, preventing the pain signal from reaching the brain in the first place, and doesnt give any opioid-like high. Its described as an effective and well-tolerated drug, according to the Vertex statement.Right now all the evidence suggests this has no addiction potential at all, said Richard Rosenquist of the Neurological Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, as reported by NBC News. Its no different than Tylenol or ibuprofen in terms of addiction potential. Terp Vairin, who participated in a 2023 clinical trial of the medicine after undergoing nose surgery, told Nature that she felt very lucid after taking the drug, and didnt experience side effects linked to opioid medication like grogginess or nausea.Todays approval is a historic milestone, Reshma Kewalramani, Vertex CEO and president, said in the Vertex statement. We have the opportunity to change the paradigm of acute pain management and establish a new standard of care. However, given the medications steep price$15.50 per 50-milligram pillit remains to be seen whether suzetrigine has the practical potential, in addition to the medical one, to truly become a widespread opioid alternative.

  • WhatsApp Says Some Users Targeted by Israeli Spyware
    gizmodo.com
By Todd Feathers Published January 31, 2025 | Comments (0) | WhatsApp has been a popular target for spyware companies. JarTee/Shutterstock WhatsApp says that civil society workers and journalists on its platform were the targets of hacks by the Israeli spyware company Paragon Solutions. A company official told Gizmodo that WhatsApp had detected the hacking attempts in December and closed down the attack vector. WhatsApp believes around 90 users of the platform were targeted by a malicious PDF file that could be sent to a group chat and would automatically download itself onto the victims phone, infecting it with spyware that potentially granted the operator broad access to the device beyond just WhatsApp. The company, which is owned by Meta, sent Paragon a cease-and-desist letter. WhatsApp has disrupted a spyware campaign by Paragon that targeted a number of users including journalists and members of civil society, the spokesperson said. Weve reached out directly to people who we believe were affected. This is the latest example of why spyware companies must be held accountable for their unlawful actions. WhatsApp will continue to protect peoples ability to communicate privately. The revelation comes a month after WhatsApp won a lawsuit against another Israeli spyware company, NSO Group, that reverse-engineered the popular messaging app in order to install malware on the phones of at least 1,400 human rights activists, diplomats, attorneys, journalists, and other hacking targets. The case was the first time that a court held a spyware firm liable for breaking U.S. law. Paragon Solutions is headquartered in Tel Aviv, Israel but has an office in Virginia. An American venture capital firm, AE Industrial Partners, purchased the company for as much as $900 million in December, according to Israeli media reports. That acquisition came shortly after Paragon entered into a one-year, $2 million contract with Homeland Security Investigations, a branch of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for its flagship spyware product Graphite. That deal was quickly criticized by civil society groups, who said that it likely violated a 2023 executive order issued by former President Joe Biden banning federal departments from purchasing spyware products that pose significant counterintelligence or security risks to the United States Government or significant risks of improper use by a foreign government or foreign person. It was not immediately clear who was behind the most recent hacking attempts that WhatsApp disclosed.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Matthew Gault Published January 17, 2025 By AJ Dellinger Published January 14, 2025 By Todd Feathers Published December 23, 2024 By Matt Novak Published December 4, 2024 By Todd Feathers Published November 13, 2024 By Matt Novak Published October 29, 2024

Sous les ailes is a bioclimatic house nestled at the edge of the Fontainebleau forest, in the painters' village of Barbizon, just an hour from Paris. A stone outbuilding occupies the northeast corner of this nearly 2000 m plot, while two concrete extensions currently adjoin the building. To the south, the characteristic rocks of the Fontainebleau forest unfold under the shade of tall oak trees.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The owners dream of generously glazed spaces, in harmony with the surroundings, opening up to the surrounding nature. They desire spaces bathed in light while remaining discreet and blending seamlessly into the calm and preserved environment around them. Their vision goes beyond aesthetics: they wish for an environmentally friendly house, self-sufficient in terms of energy and water, to create a sustainable living space in perfect symbiosis with its environment.Save this picture! The two extensions are demolished, revealing and enhancing the stone of the original building. The height of the original building's gutter determines the height limit for the new constructions. A first volume, built with a mixed structure of wood and hemp-lime blocks, houses the living areas. It stretches parallel to the northern boundary of the plot. The entrance, running alongside the stone of the existing house, opens directly onto the garden, while the structure remains discreet thanks to its transparency. This volume, generous in height, is divided into three sections by functional blocks, separating the entrance, the living room, and the kitchen/dining area.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! On the south side, the facade is largely glazed and protected by a cantilevered roof designed to limit summer sunlight. On the north side, small openings create a sense of cross-views. The volume dedicated to the sleeping areas is designed with essential simplicity. Built entirely of hemp-lime, it blends discreetly under the "wings" of the main volume, extending towards the rocks where it finds shelter. The master bedroom, intimate and soothing, is nestled in the undergrowth, offering a true haven of peace in harmony with the surrounding nature.Save this picture! To the north, in the less prestigious part of the plot, the garage and workshop are located, away from the heart of the house but perfectly integrated into the landscape, forming a harmonious complement. In the existing house, fully insulated with bio-sourced materials such as sprayed hempcrete for the walls and wood wool for the roof, there is a bathroom, a laundry room, and a guest room. Two rainwater harvesting tanks and a treatment system ensure water self-sufficiency. • Curvy spaceplane is one step closer to its ISS rendezvous
    www.popsci.com
Sierra Space has passed yet another major benchmarkone that didnt involve inflating (and subsequently popping) space station module models. According to the startups January 29 update, the companys retro-futuristic spaceplane, Dream Chaser, recently demonstrated the ability to handle critical payloads destined for the International Space Station. Beyond the ISS, Sierra Spaces Dream Chaser Cargo System (DCCS) may also serve future orbital installations in similar capacities.Milestones like Sierra Spaces Joint Test 10B are needed to confirm Dream Chasers ability to handle specialized payloads such as vital scientific research, Pablo Gonzalez, Sierra Space Vice President of Crew and Cargo Transportation Systems, said in a statement earlier this week.Dream Chaser may arrive at the ISS as early as May. Credit: Sierra Space Last months test required coordination across multiple locations. While Dream Chaser itself was located at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, control rooms also participated in the exercise at Sierra Space in Louisville, CO, and the Marshall Spaceflight Center in Huntsville, AL. During the test, Dream Chaser demonstrated the ability to exchange data between multiple payloads inside the pressurized cabin, air-cool capabilities, and the need to consistently maintain in-cabin power.Joint Test 10B focused on three payloads, all of which are potentially slated to be aboard DCC-1, Dream Chasers first official ISS mission currently scheduled to launch no earlier than May. The first cargo, a cryogenic preservation system designed by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, will store scientific samples at temperatures anywhere between -95 and 10 degrees Celsius (-130 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit). The Powered Ascent Utility Locker (PAUL) from Sierra Space collaborator, Space Tango, is intended to hold a pair of CubeLab experiments requiring power during Dream Chasers ascent to the ISS. Finally, NASAs Single Stowage Locker is a standard compartment system frequently used to transport experiments and other materials to and from the ISS.[ Related: Watch a giant, inflatable space station prototype explode during its intentional ultimate burst ]Dream Chasers design is noticeably different from current reusable payload systems like the SpaceX Dragon or Northrop Grumman Cygnus capsules. Instead of parachute reentry systems, Dream Chaser is much more like a NASA space shuttle, and returns to Earth through a runway landing. The aesthetic callbacks arent an accident, either. As New Atlas noted on January 30th, Dream Chaser is based largely on the HL-20 Personnel Launch System, a spaceplane concept first developed by NASA in the 1980s. The HL-20 itself is descended from the US Air Forces X-20 Dyna-Soar spaceplane originally meant for missions during the 1960s.An earlier iteration of Dream Chaser was originally in the running for NASAs astronaut transport contracts, but lost out to SpaceX and Boeing. Sierra Space has since retooled the spaceplane, removing the passenger section and installing an expendable cargo module capable of ferrying 11,000 lbs of pressurized cargo along with 1,100 lbs of unpressurized cargo into orbit. During its return flights, the Dream Chaser Cargo System (DCCS) can also handle 3,860 lbs of cargo.Dream Chasers first transport mission is at least a few months out, but as Gonzalez explained this week, tests like these brings us another step closer to launch. The post Curvy spaceplane is one step closer to its ISS rendezvous appeared first on Popular Science.
