  • Don't worry, everybody, the team behind Pokemon TCG Pocket has heard you, and changes are in the works for that weirdly limited trading feature

Bid-oofDon't worry, everybody, the team behind Pokemon TCG Pocket has heard you, and changes are in the works for that weirdly limited trading featureJust don't ask when, because they haven't said.Image credit: The Pokemon Company News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Feb. 2, 2025 Whoops, Pokemon TCG Pocket players haven't been the biggest fans of how trading works in the game, so some changes are in the works.Trading finally arrived in Pokemon TCG Pocket earlier this week, but despite being a highly anticipated feature, it hasn't gone down great with players thanks to the feature's particular requirements. To even be able to trade in the first place, you need both trade tokens and trade hourglasses, and even then you can only trade cards that have a rarity of 1-4 diamonds, or 1 star. Players don't really understand why the requirements are so restrictive, and clearly enough of an uproar has been made that The Pokemon Company has put out a statement to say that changes will be coming to the feature (at some point). To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "Since releasing the first iteration of the trading feature a few days ago, we have received a large number of comments," reads the statement. "The item requirements and restrictions implemented for the trading feature were designed to prevent abuse from bots and other prohibited actions using multiple accounts. Our goal was to balance the game while maintaining a fair environment for all players and preserving the fun of collecting cards that is core to the Pokmon TCG Pocket experience. To see this content please enable targeting cookies."However, thanks to your feedback, we understand that some of the restrictions put in place are preventing players from being able to casually enjoy the feature as intended. We are actively investigating ways to improve the feature to address these concerns. Going forward, we also plan to offer multiple ways to obtain trade tokens including through event distributions."That'll obviously be good news to players who have been frustrated with the limitations. There doesn't seem to be any indication as to when these changes will be implemented, so you'll just have to keep an eye out in the meantime. And if you really hate how trading works, then you'll have to collect that new Space-Time Smackdown set the usual way.

  • Review: The Stone Of Madness (Switch) - An Ambitious But Unpolished Stealth-Tactics Gem
    www.nintendolife.com
Captured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked)If you ever thought monasteries were just devoted to worship, feasting abbots, and choral chants of Ave Maria, The Stone of Madness is set on proving you dead wrong. This is The Game Kitchens first foray into the stealth-tactics genre (a distinctly Spanish obsession we discussed with the devs last year) after the team's stellar work with the Blasphemous Metroidvanias. Two separate campaigns take place in an imposing 1800s Pyrenees monastery, which doubles as an insane asylum. This mountaintop prison offers no redemption, nor escape from earthly woes, for five luckless inmates aiming to escape, or destroy, their captors. The hospitality of these cruel nuns and friars may feel as cold and stony as the slabs making up the monasterys walls, but we still marvelled at this sordid Jesuit asylum that drips with the Spanish Inquisitions cruelty and sorrow. A magnificent stealth sandbox, hand painted in rich gothic atmosphere and Catholic pageantry, creates a reactive simulation of its daily operations: Fretful inmates roam common areas. Nuns and friars tend herb gardens, wash laundry, or attend to holy study under fearsome inquisitors and mother superiors. When the clock chimes three oclock, monks march from their Angelus prayers from the chapel into the dining hall. Upon nightfall dreadful anima spirits stalk the halls.Captured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked)The strikes of patrolling guards and the alarms of passing clergy may be your biggest concern, but your own capabilities come a close second. Limited to a team of three, as in Commandos or Shadow Tactics, your inmates path is defined by their abilities. Some skills are conventional; the strong knock out guards and stuff them into the closest wardrobe, the small pickpocket keys and other goodies before sliding through narrow crevices unnoticed. Others are more creative, and impressive: a witch hexes guards into tripping when giving chase, a child provokes guards to abandon their posts by blowing a cheeky raspberry before leading them to plant a foot onto an awaiting mousetrap. At its best, its like a morbidly madcap Scooby Doo adventure full of chases and unexpected twists.Surprisingly, we found the creative use of barriers as memorable as our abilities. If tasked with speaking to a nun then dont use Eduardo - the gentle mute cant utter a word. And a pile of papers holds many secrets, but thats no use to the child Amelia whos yet to learn to read. There are many routes, though only a few usable at any time. Its an immersive-sim-inspired recipe for improvisation, and the set-up for many, many accidents waiting to happen.Captured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked)And thats only the start. In a frightful twist, one mechanic is designed to make us even more accident-prone: each character begins the game with a phobia. Whenever triggered, their sanity plummets. Alfredo the priest cant bear the sight of violence, or its results in the form of corpses or unconscious bodies. Eduardo is afraid of the dark. Meanwhile, Leonara may serve as the groups muscle but she cant face an open flame. This approach results in a doom spiral from levels that make you confront your worst nightmares. Does Eduardo sprint through an unlit corridor at a dreadful cost or wait for Alfredo to accompany him with his oil lamp? A treasure chest in a dark room full of corpses deters the squeamish, and if you have a headache then better avoid the noisy piano player.Even worse, if your sanity hits zero youre knocked out for the day with an all-new phobia for your trouble. After being afflicted with rheumatism, Agnes spent much of our playthrough unable to sprint; Eduardo became claustrophobic and refused to hide in cupboards. With our options constricted, more mishap awaits.Captured on Nintendo Switch (Docked)The Stone of Madnesss day-night cycle creates a sense of an ongoing escape plot. By night you plan, craft makeshift tools, heal your wounds, and soothe your fractured minds. By day, the clock ticking, you act. Its a partial reset, an opportunity to reconfigure your party and equipment almost befitting a roguelite. With no objective timer, the situation is dire but the pressure is low. Messed up? Try again tomorrow. This forgiving attitude is why you wont find a manual save system, or a game over failstate, in a commendable bid to solve stealth tactics longstanding reliance on save-scumming. But we did find ourselves quitting and reloading saves as a result of the games biggest issue: its intimidating difficulty. When the game takes the guardrails off, our most devious plots werent always matched by the ability to find a path forward, or execute our plan once wed found a way forward. The information breadcrumbs towards your objective sometimes feel obscure, too easily missed - even with hints turned on we struggled with one quest to collect several mandrakes with frustratingly elusive solutions. And the monasterys subterranean crypts, stately cloisters, and winding passages make for dramatic levels, but at the cost of narrowing the open space to avoid line of sight or find refuge in the shadows. When guard patrols and formidable special characters are at large in forbidden areas, challenges like carrying a single plank of wood to create a makeshift bridge to reach the abbots quarters feel near impossible.Captured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked)These wouldnt be an issue without an unintended consequence of the day-night cycle. On normal difficulty, when things get bad, or you take too long to advance, it takes time to recover when resources dwindle. On several occasions, our suspicious misdeeds left heightened guard patrols wherever we needed to break in, our psyches so fragile just one fright left us bedridden. Accident befell us all too easily.More unhappy accidents. We noticed some performance issues, including frame-rate slowdown in crowded scenes and, in docked mode, the games impeccable art style was held back by blurry textures. There were a number of glitches in our playthrough, too. Troublingly, an introduction to a pianist froze the game entirely, forcing a restart to a save that the game told us was from several hours before! Fortunately, it had miscounted - one of a number of glitches we encountered in our time with the game.We also missed quality-of-life features and some recent genre innovations. No AI commands or options to pause and queue actions by multiple characters simultaneously like Shadow Mode from Shadow Tactics. Instead, outside of an imperfect follow/unfollow command that resets when you go to a new area, you tab between characters and do it all manually.Captured on Nintendo Switch (Docked)This busywork spoils the remarkable heist fantasy achieved in so many other ways, and creates too many windows for guards or phobias to strike. As Alfredo may utter in one of his guard-distracting sermons, the spirit is willing but the flesh (or at least our thumbs reflexes) is weak.ConclusionFor all its sins, theres the makings of a stealth-tactics classic in The Stone of Madness. Its grisly sensibility, rock-hard difficulty, and inconvenient bugs at launch mean its not a game for the weak-hearted, but 20+ hours with its rich, system-driven drama produced many delightful escapades worth admiring - even if a good number ended with us back in our cell miserably plotting our next attempt.Gothic handpainted visuals with character to match a '90s Disney movieDeviously twisted monastery asylum rich with sinister secretsCreative and unexpected tools of mischiefRock-hard difficulty and obscurely hidden objectives can cause frustrationSorely misses genre QOL featuresGood 7/10

  • AI systems with unacceptable risk are now banned in the EU
    techcrunch.com
As of Sunday in the European Union, the blocs regulators can ban the use of AI systems they deem to pose unacceptable risk or harm.February 2 is the first compliance deadline for the EUs AI Act, the comprehensive AI regulatory framework that the European Parliament finally approved last March after years of development. The act officially went into force August 1; whats now following is the first of the compliance deadlines. The specifics are set out in Article 5, but broadly, the Act is designed to cover a myriad of use cases where AI might appear and interact with individuals, from consumer applications through to physical environments.Under theblocs approach, there are four broad risk levels: (1) Minimal risk (e.g., email spam filters) will face no regulatory oversight; (2) limited risk, which includes customer service chatbots, will have a light-touch regulatory oversight; (3) high risk AI for healthcare recommendations is one example will face heavy regulatory oversight; and (4) unacceptable risk applications the focus of this months compliance requirements will be prohibited entirely. Some of the unacceptable activities include:AI used for social scoring (e.g., building risk profiles based on a persons behavior).AI that manipulates a persons decisions subliminally or deceptively.AI that exploits vulnerabilities like age, disability, or socioeconomic status.AI that attempts to predict people committing crimes based on their appearance.AI that uses biometrics to infer a persons characteristics, like their sexual orientation.AI that collects real time biometric data in public places for the purposes of law enforcement.AI that tries to infer peoples emotions at work or school.AI that creates or expands facial recognition databases by scraping images online or from security cameras.Companies that are found to be using any of the above AI applications in the EU will be subject to fines, regardless of where they are headquartered. They could be on the hook for up to 35 million (~$36 million), or 7% of their annual revenue from the prior fiscal year, whichever is greater. The fines wont kick in for some time, noted Rob Sumroy, head of technology at the British law firm Slaughter and May, in an interview with TechCrunch.Organizations are expected to be fully compliant by February 2, but the next big deadline that companies need to be aware of is in August, Sumroy said. By then, well know who the competent authorities are, and the fines and enforcement provisions will take effect.Preliminary pledgesThe February 2 deadline is in some ways a formality. Last September, over 100 companies signed the EU AI Pact, a voluntary pledgeto start applying the principles of theAI Actahead of its entry into application. As part of the Pact, signatories which included Amazon, Google, and OpenAI committed to identifying AI systems likely to be categorized as high risk under the AI Act.Some tech giants, notably Meta and Apple, skipped the Pact. French AI startup Mistral, one of the AI Acts harshest critics, also opted not to sign. That isnt to suggest that Apple, Meta, Mistral, or others who didnt agree to the Pact wont meet their obligations including the ban on unacceptably risky systems. Sumroy points out that, given the nature of the prohibited use cases laid out, most companies wont be engaging in those practices anyway. For organizations, a key concern around the EU AI Act is whether clear guidelines, standards, and codes of conduct will arrive in time and crucially, whether they will provide organizations with clarity on compliance, Sumroy said. However, the working groups are, so far, meeting their deadlines on the code of conduct for developers.Possible exemptionsThere are exceptions to several of the AI Acts prohibitions. For example, the Act permits law enforcement to use certain systems that collect biometrics in public places if those systems help perform a targeted search for, say, an abduction victim, or to help prevent a specific, substantial, and imminent threat to life. This exemption requires authorization from the appropriate governing body, and the Act stresses that law enforcement cant make a decision that produces an adverse legal effect on a person solely based on these systems outputs. The Act also carves out exceptions for systems that infer emotions in workplaces and schools where theres a medical or safety justification, like systems designed for therapeutic use.The European Commission, the executive branch of the EU, said that it would release additional guidelines in early 2025, following a consultation with stakeholders in November. However, those guidelines have yet to be published.Sumroy said its also unclear how other laws on the books might interact with the AI Acts prohibitions and related provisions. Clarity may not arrive until later in the year, as the enforcement window approaches. Its important for organizations to remember that AI regulation doesnt exist in isolation, Sumroy said. Other legal frameworks, such as GDPR, NIS2, and DORA, will interact with the AI Act, creating potential challenges particularly around overlapping incident notification requirements. Understanding how these laws fit together will be just as crucial as understanding the AI Act itself.

  • House of Culture by Alvar Aalto: A Study in Organic Modernism
    archeyes.com
House of Culture | Wotjek GurakThe House of Culture (Kulttuuritalo) in Helsinki, completed in 1958, is a significant example of Alvar Aaltos architectural mastery. Designed for the Finnish Communist Party, the building reflects the socio-political currents of post-war Finland, a period of ideological shifts and cultural expansion. It was conceived as a space for artistic expression and intellectual discourse, embodying political and civic aspirations.House of Culture Technical InformationArchitects1-2: Alvar AaltoLocation: Sturenkatu 4, Alppila, Helsinki, FinlandClient: Finnish Communist PartyProject Year: 1955 1958Photographs: Wotjek Gurak, Hannu RytkyBuilding art is a synthesis of life in materialised form. His organic modernism, deeply influenced by nature and vernacular traditions, is evident in the House of Culture. This project showcases Aaltos ability to reconcile sculptural form with civic purpose, advancing architectural dialogues around public space and cultural institutions. The House of Culture comprises three primary elements: the large auditorium, administrative offices, and auxiliary cultural spaces. These are arranged asymmetrically, yet their relationships create a balanced architectural composition. Aaltos sensitivity to urban form is evident in how the building engages with its surroundings, maintaining a human scale while asserting a distinctive presence. The focal point of the designs auditorium features a striking curved roof that lends the structure its sculptural dynamism. This sweeping gesture defines the exterior silhouette and enhances acoustic performance within. The administrative wing, by contrast, is more restrained, employing rectilinear forms that ground the composition. Aaltos spatial strategybalancing monumentality with intimacyexemplifies his nuanced approach to public architecture.Aaltos material choices in the House of Culture are pivotal to its architectural language. The extensive use of red brick establishes a tactile connection with Helsinkis historic urban fabric, lending the building a sense of permanence and contextual sensitivity. The curvature of the auditorium roof is accentuated by an exposed copper finish, which has aged to a rich patina over time.Internally, Aalto orchestrates a warm and inviting atmosphere through wood paneling, custom-designed light fixtures, and carefully modulated natural light. The contrast between raw and refined materials underscores his ability to craft expressive and functional spaces. The House of Culture is a study of spatial movement and sensory engagement. Visitors are drawn in through a subtly recessed entrance, leading to a dynamic interior sequence. The auditoriums sweeping ceiling creates an immersive spatial experience, fostering an intimate relationship between the performer and the audience.Externally, the interplay of brick masses and curved surfaces generates a complex visual rhythm. Modifying solid and void elements ensures that the building remains visually permeable despite its substantial form. Aaltos light, texture, and circulation orchestration transforms the House of Culture into a dynamic architectural organism rather than a static monument.House of Culture Architectural MeritsOne of Aaltos most notable achievements in the House of Culture is his synthesis of structural logic and organic expression. The auditoriums undulating roof exemplifies an early experimentation with freeform structures, a precursor to later explorations by architects such as Jrn Utzon and Eero Saarinen.Acoustics plays a defining role in the design. The curvature of the roof and the finely detailed interior surfaces ensure optimal sound distribution, demonstrating Aaltos meticulous attention to sensory experience. Moreover, his commitment to human-centered modernism is reflected in carefully calibrating seating arrangements and sightlines. The House of Culture can be seen as an experimental counterpart to Aaltos later civic projects. While Finlandia Hall (1971) refines the expressive language introduced here, the House of Culture remains unique in its combination of sculptural ambition and programmatic specificity. It also shares material affinities with Aaltos earlier brick-clad buildings, such as the Baker House Dormitory at MIT (1949), though it explores a more dynamic interplay of mass and curvature.Legacy and Contemporary RelevanceToday, the House of Culture continues to function as a venue for cultural events, concerts, and public gatherings. Despite political and institutional affiliations shifts, its architectural integrity remains largely intact. Recent preservation efforts have sought to maintain Aaltos original vision while adapting the building for contemporary use.Aaltos House of Culture offers valuable insights for architects who design public and cultural spaces. Its integration of materiality, acoustics, and human experience underscores the enduring relevance of Aaltos approach. In an era increasingly dominated by digital formalism, the building serves as a reminder of the importance of craftsmanship, contextual sensitivity, and sensory engagement.House of Culture PlansFloor Plan | Alvar AaltoElevation | Alvar AaltoSection | Alvar AaltoHouse of Culture Image GalleryAbout Alvar AaltoAlvar Aalto (18981976) was a Finnish architect and designer renowned for his humanistic approach to modernism. • Alumnae Memorial Library Elms College // 1973
    buildingsofnewengland.com
Located just north of and in stark contrast to the ornate Neo-Gothic 1932 Administration Building of Elms College, the schools main library building showcases how much architecture styles changed in just 40 years. The colleges library was long in the main Administration building, but was outgrown in the latter half of the 20th century. The two-story steel and cast-concrete library building was built in 1973 with exterior details in red brick and concrete, a nod to the historic materials of the older campus buildings. Unapologetically Modern, and somewhat Brutalist, the building has complex geometry of sunken voids and solid sections, broken up by a horizontal band of windows with concrete fins to mitigate sunlight. The building was designed by Boston architects, Carroll & Greenfield, and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

  • New TikTok BanAmericas AI Warning Changes Everything
    www.forbes.com
Everything suddenly changes for TikTokNurPhoto via Getty ImagesThere is something poetically ironic about the news this weekend, that DeepSeek and Huawei have teamed up as Chinas newest and oldest U.S. tech adversaries target home advantage. The most recent Chinese security threat to trigger much handwringing in Washington, with the OG that kicked off the whole U.S. versus China tech war in the first place.Interestingly, thats exactly how the South China Morning Post framed this latest news: Tech war: Huawei cloud unit powers DeepSeek models in Chinas bid for AI autonomy. If youre in America, this will not directly impact you. This is more about what happens in China. But as ever with the Chinese tech industry, its very interlaced and all these collaborations foster competitive advantage on foreign soil.Which brings us to TikTok. While we still await news on which suitor will win the viral video prize, and the platforms U.S. business changes hands to maintain its right to operate. Absent that, as things stand, and the ban kicks in (again) and those 170 million users lose access (again). Everything has changed though whether politicians like it or not. DeepSeek has admitted many of the data accusations leveled at and denied byTikTok. Here your data really does end up in China. Period.MORE FOR YOUThere are some parallels between TikTok and DeepSeek. Just as TikTok seems a new U.S. ownership structure, DeepSeek technology is being made (safely) available via Microsoft, Amazon and others. But the app has not been banned, despite the risks and it soaring to top the App Store and Play Store download charts. And clearly there is no onus on U.S. players behind the scenes to stop working with the platform, as Oracle and did with TikTok to comply with the ban.The threat of a new (or re-enforced, to be exact) TikTok ban hands over the company and its users, and the current ban has prevented the app from being installed afresh or updated from either Apples or Googles stores. But its hard to see how such a ban would figure now against this new backdrop, with serious DeepSeek-inspired AI warnings hanging in the air. The politics have changed, and I suspect (if tested) the legal case would present very differently as well. The irony here should come across as stark. China cares about Huawei (its tech champion) and DeepSeek (its primary Silicon Valley disruptor) in a way it has never cared for ByteDance or TikTok. Per SCMP, the move to launch DeepSeeks models on a home-grown hardware backbone highlights Chinas progress in cutting dependency on foreign technology and bolstering its domestic AI industry amid growing efforts by the U.S. to choke off Chinas access to high-end chips that the U.S. government said could be used to advance military aims.Which brings us to the final final irony. All this is happening just as President Trump retakes office. The first time around was interesting on China tech. Were barely a fortnight into the sequel, and it looks we havent seen anything yet.

  • Googles Gmail UpgradeDo Not Leave Your Account At Risk
    www.forbes.com
Gmail has changedhere's what you need to do.NurPhoto via Getty ImagesBe warned if you dont get on top of the AI being stitched through your apps and platforms, you will have no control over what data is being shared and who its being shared with. Thats behind the raft of new Gmail warnings, with millions of users now caught in a new world that few understand and that seemingly evades controls. Heres what you need to do now. With Googles recent upgrade to add default AI settings to key Workspace apps first and foremost Gmail, those wanting to safeguard their data are looking for easy-button controls. But right now, thats a major issue. As 9to5Google explains, as Gemini is now readily available to Google Workspace subscribers, admins have found that the ability to disable the new AI features is hidden behind a conversation with Google support. Not good.Data leakage through AI engines is now headline news courtesy of DeepSeek, Chinas answer to Gemini and ChatGPT. And while that example is clearly acute, with user data and tracking heading to China by default and weak security controls, Gemini has also come in for criticism. Opting out of Gmails Gemini AI summaries is a mess, 404Media has warned, advising users heres how to do it, we think. Again, not good.As one Redditor complained, I was annoyed by the new Gemini for Workspace features. In the admin page --> generative AI --> Gemini for Workspace, there were no settings to toggle on / off. I chatted with customer support, and at my request they ADDED the settings, after which I was able to toggle off all Gemini for Workspace settings (gmail, etc.).MORE FOR YOU9to5Google explains that its quite frustrating that, for a number of Workspace admins, the ability to turn off Gemini AI features appears to just not exist by default. Google, on a support page, says that the ability to manage access to Gemini features in Workspace services is only available to Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus accounts. That appears to be true, as a number of admins have found that the Workspace Admin Dashboard shows no option to turn off Gemini features. Some Enterprise users claim to not have these settings at all too Customer support representatives apparently have the ability to enable a new menu of settings which can be used to turn off Gemini on the Google Workspace Admin Console. The AI data leakage was behind the DeepSeek scare, when the security industry pointed out that all the data shared with Chinas disruptive AI engine was (unsurprisingly) heading straight for China. But as I have said before, while the Chinese angle has intensified the debate, it didnt create it. The risk is still there, even with U.S. and other western engines.Harmonic Security warns in a new report that generative AI tools "come [with] significant risks related to data security. Despite their potential, many organizations hesitate to fully adopt Al tools due to concerns about sensitive data being inadvertently shared and possibly used to train these systems. Organizations risk losing their competitive edge if they expose sensitive data. Yet at the same time, they also risk losing out if they dont adopt GenAl and fall behind. This is not isolated to enterprise users. The entire AI ecosystem now being added to the critical platforms and services we use needs a clear set of controls and policies. Instead it is evolving in real-time with little consistency. As 404Media says, while some users will love the new AI features, others are going to want to run away from it as quickly as possible. Many peopleincluding usare already furious that they were automatically opted into it. Turns out, disabling it isnt straightforward. And so, whether youre a home or enterprise user, take some time to decide whats right for you (or those youre responsible for) and adjust your settings accordingly. Dont be bounced into taking risks youre not comfortable with by a mix of hype and FOMO. Harmonic Security says more than 80% of companies now worry about sensitive information leaking via GenAI.I have reached out to Google for their thoughts and advice.
