• It's So Easy to Install This Window Heat Pump I Saw at CES
    www.cnet.com
TheGradientAll-Weather 120V Window Heat Pump I saw atCES 2025was blowing crisp, cool air onto the floor of the Las Vegas Convention Center, sitting on a makeshift window at a booth shared with the other home electrification companiesBioLiteand Copper. This isn't your dad's window air conditioner. That noisy old thing couldn't keep you warm at all, much less when it's below zero outside. That's why Gradient's big window heat pump is so much larger -- and more expensive.Read more: Best of CES 2025 Winners, Awarded by CNET GroupRather than sitting inside the window and taking up all of the space, like most window units, the Gradient unit straddles the bottom of the window, with the outdoor and indoor units hanging below, like a horseback rider's legs dangling from the saddle. All the Best Home Tech Gadgets We Saw at CES 2025: Robot Maids, Fog Gardens and More See all photos A powerful heat pump for small spacesThe All-Weather model was designed to boost the heating performance of Gradient's primary model meant for moderate climates. The moderate climate model can keep a home warm when the mercury outside drops to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The All-Weather model, built to meet the needs of the New York City Housing Authority, is rated for weather down to minus-13 degrees.Gradient's heat pump can heat and cool up to 500 square feet, with 9,300 BTUs of cooling power and up to 9,000 BTUs for heating. But perhaps the coolest part is that this big device (it weighs 140 pounds) can run off a standard 120-volt outlet -- no electrical work needed. A Gradient rep told CNET by email you won't need to hire a professional to help install it. The All-Weather 120V Window Heat Pump can be installed on your own. Mist, Wi-Fi and more heat pump perksThe unit has some nifty features. The outdoor unit has a diffuser that turns any condensate into mist, meaning no water is pooling up underneath it or dripping onto the ground below. The heat pumps are Wi-Fi enabled and can be controlled either from the app or from a touch thermostat on the indoor unit. The heat pump also doesn't block the view of the window. Because it hangs below, you can still open and close the window, see outside and use the top of the heat pump as a small table surface. So far, Gradient's heat pumps have been mostly available only to specific buyers -- namely the New York City Housing Authority. But company reps told me business customers can buy direct from Gradient. A few units were made available to individual consumers through a distributor in the New York area, but those quantities were very limited, and the company mostly sells to businesses. A Gradient rep said the company believes that's the fastest way to scale up electrification, and it means you might see these heat pumps in businesses, schools or multifamily housing. The All-Weather model has an MSRP of $3,800 -- a lot more than your typical window AC, but for something with a lot more capability. And because it doesn't require any permitting, ductwork or electrical work, expect the installation cost to be a lot smaller than other ways to heat and cool your home.Correction, Jan. 29: Updated to clarify that direct-to-consumer sales are limited to one contractor. Whilst they still list Private Division as the publisher on those pages, the defunct Steam pages - which were quietly amended last week - have been updated to replace the publisher Private Division with 2K.At the time of writing, it's unclear if this is just an oversight, a licensing issue, or a signal that Roll7's portfolio did not transfer to the anonymous buyer and remains with 2K.Grand Theft Auto and Borderlands publisher Take-Two Interactive announced the sale of its indie-focused publishing label Private Division in November 2024. Additionally, the company also confirmed the closure of OlliOlli World developer Roll7 and Kerbal Space Program 2's Intercept Games, six months after CEO Strauss Zelnick insisted, "We didn't shutter those studios".

Pokmon TCG Pocket admits restrictive trading system stops players "enjoying the feature as intended"It's hardly pocket science.Image credit: Pokmon News by Vikki Blake Contributor Published on Feb. 2, 2025 Within days of launching a controversial new update that added the ability to trade cards, Pokmon TCG Pocket has acknowledged the community's backlash, saying it was "actively investigating" ways to improve.A statement posted to social media stopped short of apologising to unhappy players, but admitted some of the new feature's restrictions were actively "preventing players from being able to casually enjoy" the card game.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Xbox Developer Direct - four promising games also coming to PlayStation.Watch on YouTube"Since releasing the first iteration of the trading feature a few days ago, we have received a large number of comments. Thank you all for sharing your feedback," the statement from Creatures Inc began."The item requirements and restrictions implemented for the trading feature were designed to prevent abuse from bots and other prohibited actions using multiple accounts." To see this content please enable targeting cookies. As trading requires players use up valuable resources and adhere to a lengthy list of restrictions in order to acquire cards they don't already have, some players felt as though trading was actively discouraged, especially as its limited to players on your friends list, and only one trade can be conducted at a time. Currently, only cards of One, Two, Three or Four Diamond rarity can be offered for trade, alongside One Star rarity. Now, however, the team says that the goal had only been to "balance" the game whilst "maintaining a fair environment for all players", adding "preserving the fun of collecting cards[...] is core to the Pokmon TCG Pocket experience"."However, thanks to your feedback, we understand that some of the restrictions put in place are preventing players from being able to casually enjoy the feature as intended," the team concluded."We are actively investigating ways to improve the feature to address these concerns. Going forward, we also plan to offer multiple ways to obtain trade tokens including through event distributions."As always, thank you for being part of the Pokmon TCG Pocket community."If you're trying to navigate the new update, Eurogamer can help out with a guide to Pokmon TCG Pocket trading and how to trade cards, as well as a deeper dive into Pokmon TCG Pocket Trade Tokens and how to get them.

  • Oh dear, after BioWare moves a bunch of its staff to other EA studios, one report says they won't be able to move back
    www.vg247.com
Bad MoveOh dear, after BioWare moves a bunch of its staff to other EA studios, one report says they won't be able to move backThe headcount at BioWare is looking a lot smaller these days.Image credit: BioWare News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Feb. 2, 2025 After announcing that BioWare is being downsized, with some staff moved to other studios, a new report says that said staff didn't know the move would be permanent.Earlier this week, BioWare essentially announced some layoffs without calling them layoffs, the wording particularly obtuse considering seemingly none of Dragon Age: The Veilguard's main writing team is at the studio anymore. At the time of the announcement, BioWare said it had "worked diligently over the past few months to match many of our colleagues with other teams at EA that had open roles that were a strong fit," but a new report from Bloomsberg has shed some light on the situation. As stated by BioWare, staff from the studio have been moved to other studios, but according to sources Bloomsberg spoke with, while the "loans" were just meant to be temporary, they now appear to be permanent. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Bloomberg explained that those that would want to work at BioWare again would only be able to do so by applying to any job openings that become available in the future. Unsurprisingly, this news hasn't been popular with a lot of employees, given they're now on new teams at studios they had never intended to work at. Some even noted that they specifically wanted to work at BioWare so they could work on RPGs, and don't particularly like the idea of being assigned to action or sports games.Quite notably, this rearrangement of staff and layoffs has led the studio to be cut in half, with the headcount being 200 hundred a couple of years ago, now at 100. The remaining staff are currently working on Mass Effect 5, which I imagine will now be something of a hail Mary given the bomb that was Anthem. Fingers crossed the game pulls through for a studio that has long been recognised as a developer to aspire to be like.

  • Feature: Nintendo Life eShop Selects (January 2025)
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Nintendo LifeThank goodness January is over, right?January 2025 felt like the longest month ever thankfully, we're here to brighten your day with our first eShop Selects for the year. We're starting things fresh for 2025 and going back to basics focusing on the games we've reviewed. The winners are voted for by Nintendo Life staff and contributors, who pick their top three from the eShop games listed below. Before we dive into what has been a surprisingly packed January for the eShop, let's look back at our final Readers' Choice winner: the adorable Quilts & Cats of Calico. Based on the board game of the same name, you have to make lovely quilts for the cosy cats. It can be played solo or with up to three friends, so it's the perfect cosy party game.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube795kWatch on YouTube While we wait for more details on the Switch 2, there are plenty of games to get lost in. So let us indulge you on the very best eShop releases in January... They keep on comingHonourable mentionsLike we said above, January was a packed month, particularly over the final few days. Five of the eight games featured here launched on or after 28th January so we're sure plenty of you were scrambling like us to get your ducks in line and make space for some excellent games. This month, everything eligible got at least a 7/10 from us you're spoilt for choice if you're a Metroidvania fan, as you can see.Blade Chimera | Review: 9/10ENDER MAGNOLIA: Bloom in the Mist | Review: 9/10Freedom Wars Remastered | Review: 7/10Hello Kitty Island Adventure | Review: 8/10The Stone of Madness | Review: 7/10It was an incredibly close month for votes, with every game getting at least one vote from the Nintendo Life team. But here are the ones that we consider to be the cream of the crop...3rd Place - Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of WinterPublisher: United Label / Developer: Odd Bug StudioRelease Date: 28th Jan 2025 (USA) / 28th Jan 2025 (UK/EU)The first Tails of Iron came up in one of our Games We Missed features back in 2023. We're very glad we had a chance to go back and play that game in preparation for the sequel, because Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter is everything a follow-up should be and more.Extremely challenging and beautiful to look at, Tails of Iron 2 challenges your combat mastery with tough boss battles and rewarding combat. We may have scored Tails of Iron 2 a respectable 7/10, but it's a worth choice for third place here only repetitive level design and excessive backtracking hold it back from being the big cheese. Violent vermin2nd Place - Laika: Aged Through BloodPublisher: Headup / Developer: Brainwash GangRelease Date: 30th Jan 2025 (USA) / 30th Jan 2025 (UK/EU)This one's been a long time coming Laika: Aged Through Blood launched on PC and other consoles in late 2023. The Switch version was meant to follow in 2024, but it got delayed very last minute (as in, it actually launched and was then pulled from the eShop, so some of you have probably already played this).Luckily, the wait was worth it. The second brutally difficult game on this list, Laika: Aged Through Blood is one of the most unique Metroidvanias we've ever played. Motocross exploration mixed with stylish gunplay combat and beautiful visuals, we awarded Laika a 9/10 in our review. What a lovely day!1st Place - Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward VectorPublisher: Fellow Traveller / Developer: Jump Over The AgeRelease Date: 31st Jan 2025 (USA) / 31st Jan 2025 (UK/EU)One of our most anticipated games of the year has delivered in Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector. Bigger, bolder, but still just as thoughtful as the first game, Citizen Sleeper 2 expands the scope of the game by giving you your own ship and crew, allowing you to explore the Starward Belt. You'll take on contracts and forge friendships throughout your time, but you also need to manage your stress levels in order to survive. Its deeply anti-capitalist message and focus on bonds and relationships elevates this beyond the 2022 original in our eyes.Congrats to Citizen Sleeper 2, the first winner of our eShop Selects in 2025. Hugely deserved. If you can't tell, we absolutely love this game, so check out our 9/10 review to find out exactly why. To qualify for this list, these games must have been released as a digital-only Nintendo Switch eShop title in that particular month, and must have been reviewed on Nintendo Life; we select the qualifying games based on their review scores.Staff are then asked to vote for three games that they think deserve to sit right at the very top of that list; first choice gets three points, second choice gets two points, and third choice gets one point. These votes are then tallied to create a top-three list, with the overall winner taking that month's top prize.Up Next: December 2024See AlsoShare:00 Alana has been with Nintendo Life since 2022, and while RPGs are her first love, Nintendo is a close second. • Dub: the copy trading app that has teens talking
    techcrunch.com
Social media changed everything from news consumption to shopping. Now, Dub thinks it can do the same for investing through an influencer-driven marketplace where users can follow the trades of top investors with a few taps. Think of it as TikTok meets Wall Street.Founded by 23-year-old Steven Wang a Harvard drop-out who began investing in second grade with his parents blessing Dub is betting the future of investing isnt about picking stocks but picking people. The app allows users to follow the strategies of traders, hedge funds, and even those mimicking high-profile politicians. Instead of making individual trade decisions, Dub users can copy entire portfolios. The concept has struck a chord. Dub has already surpassed 800,000 downloads and raised $17 million in seed funding with a new round seemingly in the works. Less clear is whether Dub can avoid the pitfalls of previous fintech startups.Inspired by GamestopRetail investing has evolved dramatically over the past two decades. The days of $7 trading commissions and clunky brokerage interfaces were blown apart roughly a decade ago by mobile-first platforms like Robinhood that invited people to trade for free. At the same time, social media is reshaping how people, and particularly members of Gen Z, make financial decisions. As a Harvard student during the pandemic one who was trading from his dorm room because you couldnt really do anything at school Wang came to believe these two trends, retail investing and influencer-driven decision-making, were on a collision course. Between the Gamestop saga, Elon Musks ability to move the Dogecoin and Bitcoin markets with every tweet, and peoples willingness to really follow ideas and individuals to a whole new level, Wang decided to drop out in 2021 and start building Dub.Right now, the platforms average user is between 30 and 35, says Wang, though New York-based Dub is clearly finding its way in front of an even younger audience. In recent weeks, this editors 15-year-old has asked more than once about investing like Nancy Pelosi after marinating in Dub ads on Instagram.Pelosi isnt personally trading on Dub; its just a trader on the platform mirroring her disclosed moves. Still, the idea has caught fire. Nancy Pelosi is up 123% on Dub with real capital, says Wang, and weve made our customers millions of dollars since that portfolio was launched on the platform.Dub isnt free. Wang was determined to generate revenue from the outset, and Dub does that today through a $10-per-month subscription model. Wang says further that some top portfolios on the platform charge management fees and Dub takes a 25% cut of those fees.In the meantime, Dub has scaled in part through organic growth. Creators who are good traders on the app are incentivized to bring their audience, says Wang, whose parents immigrated from China and who grew up in Detroit. Dub is also investing aggressively in advertising, leaning heavily into Meta ads in particular to acquire users, including on Instagram. Weve been really lucky where I think the broader American population really believes there are other people out there that have an edge over them when it comes to the investing world, says Wang.Image Credits:DubFighting wordsThe question now is whether Dub will follow a similar path as other fast-growing fintech startups, many of which have found themselves in the crosshairs of regulators. Robinhood disrupted finance by making trading free, but it also faced regulatory scrutiny ahead of its 2021 IPO, ultimately ditching a feature that showered users with digital confetti every time they made a trade.Dub says its keen to avoid the same mistakes. The company spent more than two years working with FINRA and the SEC before launching, ensuring its model complied with financial regulations. We didnt just navigate regulation at Dub we embraced it, Wang says.(Like Robinhood, Dub is a fully licensed broker-dealer.)A big distinction, argues Wang, is that Dub is designed to educate users, not just encourage blind speculation. The platform displays risk scores, risk-adjusted returns, and portfolio stability metrics to help investors make informed decisions, he says.He suggests its safer for investors than Robinhood. Says Wang: I have a lot of respect for what [CEO] Vlad [Tenev] has done in making trading free. But at the end of the day, making it super easy to trade without expert guidance, without education, is really just gambling for the broader population. To underscore his point, Wang points to the decision of Robinhood along with Coinbase and other exchanges to make the meme coin TRUMP available for customers ahead of President Donald Trumps inauguration. While it initially surged in price, its price has plummeted since. Says Wang, I think fundamentally the incentives are just misaligned between these big platforms that are public companies now that need to make money and that generally their customers have probably lost money.(Worth noting: in a separate, recent conversation with Robinhoods Tenev about Dub, Tenev proposed to TechCrunch that copy trading could become of greater interest to regulators, and that Dub may not yet be under the magnifying glass because of its comparatively smaller size.)Either way, not everyone is sold on Dubs vision. The biggest knock against such platforms, says critics, is that stock picking underperforms passive investing over the long run, with studies showing that most actively managed funds fail to beat the S&P 500.Its a criticism with which Wang is familiar and on which hes quick to push back. For one thing, he argues that many such studies are cherry-picked. (I bet a lot of those are sponsored by the passive investing index companies, he says.)Further, says Wang, theres a reason that actively managed hedge funds like Citadel are thriving. If you look at what the ultra wealthy can do, theyre giving their money to Ken Griffin of Citadel, [because] theyre consistently putting up non-correlated returns year after year after year, he says.If one more broadly looks at the growth of the hedge fund space and the asset management space, continues Wang, theres a reason why its growing. Its because they are making money for their customers.

There arent many details about how it will actually work, but Confetti is reportedly tied to iCloud and could also be the beginning of a broader revamp of Apples Calendar app.It also sounds like the feature release will be tied to iOS 18.3, the latest update to Apples iPhone software that began rolling out Monday and opts users into Apple Intelligence.TopicsApple, Apps, Confetti, iOS

  • Your iPhone Is About To Get An Unexpected New Feature, Report Says
    www.forbes.com
Apple is about to release a surprise new feature for the iPhone (and likely the iPad and Mac) to help you invite people to parties and other events, according to a new report, as part of a revamp to Apples calendar app. And its coming soon, for employees to test, it seems.A new app could be coming to the iPhone soon. 2025 Bloomberg Finance LPAs early as this coming week, Apple plans to introduce a new iCloud-based service dubbed Confetti internally. As the festive code name implies, the service offers a new way to invite people to parties, functions and meetings, according to Bloombergs Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter.Note that Gurman refers to it as a service, so its possible that it wont be a standalone app but rather an enhanced part of the Calendar app or iMessage, perhaps. For years, Apple has been seeking to revamp its calendar app and this new initiative could be the beginning of a broader effort. The release is tied to iOS 18.3, which just started rolling out last Monday, Gurman goes on.This chimes with a report from 9to5Mac in January which referred to something called Invites, discovered in the iOS 18.3 code, which suggests that the Invites app will integrate with iCloud and will even have a web version on iCloud.com. The new app also integrates with a new iOS 18 daemon called GroupKit, which manages database models for groups of people. This daemon has been present since the first release of iOS 18.0 and hasnt been used by any Apple apps so far.MORE FOR YOUIt seems that it will work by showing a list of the people invited to that event and which ones have confirmed their attendance. It could be that Apple has plans to integrate it with other parts of the system (such as a mini iMessage app). Presumably, the app will have a more fun interface than what the Calendar app currently provides for inviting someone to an event, 9to5Mac goes on.Whats most intriguing is that Apple has never dropped the slightest hint that its working on this update, which could mean it wont appear. But Gurmans belief is that it might be just days away from employee testing, which could mean public release will follow soon after. More details as they emerge.
