• When Your Product Outgrows Its Original Vision
    www.informationweek.com
Innovation rarely follows a straight path. More often than not, it takes unexpected turns that even its creators dont foresee. What starts as a solution to a specific problem can grow into something far more versatile, opening doors to new opportunities. This is a story many of us in tech live through -- a moment when our product grows beyond its initial scope and forces us to think bigger. The challenge for creators? Recognizing and embracing this evolution without losing sight of the products original vision and purpose. The Straight Path That Never WasIn the early stages of product development, defining a specific niche often feels like the safest choice. It simplifies messaging, helps teams focus on solving a core problem, and provides a clear entry point into the market.Take Notion as an example. Originally conceived as a simple note-taking tool, its ease of use and flexibility attracted users who began building databases, workflows, and even full-fledged project management systems.Docker is another example. It began as a tool to package and ship applications in isolated containers. Developers loved its simplicity, and it quickly became a go-to solution for building microservices architectures. The Singular Use Case EvolvesRelated:Once a product enters the hands of users, its true potential begins to develop. People are naturally creative, finding ways to stretch a tools functionality to fit unique use cases.Slack, initially designed as a communication tool for a game development team, evolved when users began integrating Slack with their workflows, turning it into a powerhouse for automation and productivity. Similarly, Jupyter Notebooks, originally designed for data science, found a second life in education, becoming a staple for teaching programming and computational thinking. The lesson? Users will always stretch what a product can do, often transforming it into something greater than its creators ever imagined.Listening to Users Is KeyUser feedback is the most valuable resource for any product team. For example, a study on the Android operating system revealed that aligning development efforts with user feedback significantly contributed to the platform's success. The research found a strong correlation between user-requested features and their implementation in subsequent releases, underscoring the importance of responding to user needs.Examples abound:Terraform, a tool for managing infrastructure as code, expanded its plugin ecosystem based on user demand. These plugins now allow Terraform to manage not just cloud infrastructure but databases, monitoring systems, and even SaaS tools.Related:Kubernetes, initially developed to orchestrate containers, gained features like Helm charts and StatefulSets after users pushed for better ways to manage complex applications.AWS Lambda, designed for serverless backends, gained significant adoption among DevOps teams automating infrastructure tasks. AWS responded by adding integrations with CI/CD tools and observability platforms.By listening to users, these tools not only stayed relevant but expanded their capabilities to address broader needs.Real-World Example: Growing Beyond the NicheWhen our company first launched, it was recognized as a data orchestrator, a natural entry point given the pressing challenges faced by data engineers. Managing ETL pipelines, automating repetitive workflows, and ensuring better data flows were the core problems we aimed to solve. But as the platform matured, we began seeing unexpected use cases emerge -- driven entirely by our users. One early adopter, a global retail company, initially used us to migrate their data workflows. He quickly realized the platform's flexibility could serve needs far beyond data engineering.Related:Before long, they were:Automating microservices deployments;Managing infrastructure provisioning; andEnhancing customer data with third-party APIs.These were use cases we hadnt explicitly designed for, but they highlighted Kestras potential as a general-purpose orchestration platform. The evolution wasnt something we imposed; it was a natural progression driven by our users needs.By listening closely and adapting to their feedback, weve been able to expand Kestras scope without losing sight of its core strength: making complex workflows simpler and more efficient.Lessons from Product EvolutionTo reiterate, here are a few lessons from across the organization as our company grew and found new entry points for our product:Flexibility is keyProducts with modular architectures, like Terraform, adapt more easily to user demands. Modular design allows teams to experiment without disrupting the core functionality.Let users leadObserving how users interact with a product often reveals growth opportunities. For example, when developers started using GitHub Actions to automate workflows beyond code, GitHub expanded the feature set to include integrations with DevOps pipelines.Iterate, dont overhaulGradual changes ensure that existing users dont feel alienated. This approach worked well for VS Code, which started as a lightweight editor but added extensibility and support for entire development workflows.Evolve your narrativeAs a product grows, so must its messaging. Platforms like Tableau expanded from focusing on data analysts to speaking to decision-makers and entire organizations as they evolved into enterprise solutions.Final ThoughtsThe journey of a product is rarely linear, and thats a good thing. What starts as a specialized solution can grow into a platform that serves diverse needs, creating new opportunities for both its creators and users. For innovators, the takeaway is clear: dont resist when your product outgrows its original vision. Lean into the possibilities, stay connected to your users, and remember that the most impactful innovations are often the ones you didnt plan for.

  • Populous reveals plans for new stand at Wrexham football club
    www.architectsjournal.co.uk
The Welsh side, co-owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, unveiled proposals for the new Kop Stand yesterday (3 February) designed by the sports specialist architect, which replaced AFL on the job last year.Populouss proposals which have been submitted to Wrexham County Borough Council include seating and safe standing for 5,500 supporters and a hospitality space, which has been designed to allow for future capacity increase and non-matchday use.The seating bowl and roof are designed to amplify the sound of spectators towards the pitch, Populous says, with promises that the new stand will create an atmospheric home for the Welsh football sides home fans.AdvertisementThe stand will have a red brick exterior with a lattice effect and two dragon-shaped brick motifs representing the football clubs badge. Populous describes this as a modern interpretation of the history surrounding the locally-produced Ruabon red brick and Wrexhams Terracottapolis nickname a reference to the citys manufacturinghistory of tiles and other terracotta products. The practices global director and senior principal, Declan Sharkey, explained: We have designed the new Kop Stand to be both authentic and unique in its approach to hosting Wrexhams passionate fans. The striking form and profile of the stand facade uses Ruabon-style red brick with dynamic textures and modern interpretation. The angled planes and carved form of the brick faade echo the strata of coal and slate seams that represent the industrial heritage of the local area, with the feeling that they have emerged organically from the ground they stand on.A contemporary approach to the brick detailing enables layers of transparency through the brickwork that dissolve the boundary between the stand and the public plaza outside. This allows visibility into and out of the stand, responding to the clubs role as an open and integral part of its local community.Populous was appointed as architect for the Kop Stand in October as part of a masterplan for the entire STK Cae Ras stadium after a previous design by AFL Architects was shelved.AdvertisementAFLs scheme won planning approval in November 2022 but the club later said that several matters need to be resolved before the stand could progress. Source:AFLAFL's unrealised Wrexham plansOutstanding issues included the grant funding agreement from the borough council and changes to the existing lease structure of the ground. Prior to the clubs takeover by Reynolds and McElhenney, the club had a complicated ownership structure which involved the local university and several other stakeholders.Wrexham says the Populous overhaul of the ground will make the Kop fully compliant with UEFA Category Four stadium requirements and will be completed in time for the UEFA European Under-19 Championship final tournament in 2026. This will allow the league one side to bring international football back to north Wales.Wrexham AFC chief executive officer Michael Williamson commented: The new Kop Stand marks a special moment in the history of the STK Cae Ras, allowing us to restore the traditional four-sided enclosure of the stadium, providing new and improved facilities and experiencesfor our fans and visitors to the stadium alike.'The distinctive design of the new Kop Stand embodies the history and heritage of Wrexham rooted in the local community creating a timeless, authentic piece of civic architecture that complements other landmarks. It will provide an iconic landmark standing at the gateway to the city giving it a true sense of place.Wrexham had hoped the previous design would be built out by the 2024/25 season.Earlier this month, Populous posted accounts which revealed its turnover had quadrupled from 34.9 million to a record 136 million.According to the companys accounts covering the EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) region for the year ending 31 December 2023, profit before tax rose 1,500 per cent, from 731,000 to 12 million in 2023. Meanwhile, the average number of staff in the EMEA region almost doubled from 166 to 288 employees (of which 257 were architects). Source:PopulousPopulouss Wrexham football club plans (January 2025)

  • Listing bid to save Wolverhamptons 1960s art school from demolition
    www.architectsjournal.co.uk
The 1960s Brutalist building overlooking the citys ring road faces redevelopment as part of the universitys plans for a radical overhaul of its estate. The AJ understands that under the plans, the post-war art school would be demolished and the site redeveloped on the advice of university consultants despite campaigners arguing that it has abundant potential to be retrofitted. But the redevelopment plans could be scuppered if Historic England approves a listing application for the building, which it is currently considering.AdvertisementThe nine-storey tower block, known as the George Wallis building, sits in Wolverhampton city centre, bounded by Stafford Street to the east, North Street to the west and the ring road to the south. Its primary structure consists of reinforced in-situ concrete, with elevations characterised by open-frame, stretched octagonal openings. The building was commissioned by the County Borough of Wolverhampton and designed between 1966 and 1970 by architect Diamond, Redfern & Partners in collaboration with the Staffordshire county architect A Chapman. It was officially opened in 1970 by sculptor Charles Wheeler, a former Wolverhampton University student. Source:Sharonjit SuttonUniversity of Wolverhampton School of Arts protestA Change.org petition rallying against the demolition has already racked up more than 3,500 signatures since it was launched last week (30 January). The campaign describes the building as more than just an art school', insisting it is a landmark and part of Wolverhamptons skyline and heritage.Architectural heritage campaigner the Twentieth Century Society submitted a listing application for the School of Art last year, prompted by its very real and immediate threat of demolition.AdvertisementThe society said the building was in very good condition, externally and internally, insisting its demolition would simply be wasteful, irresponsible and anti-growth.A spokesperson added: Defined by its sculptural concrete exoskeleton, this is an excellent surviving example of a post-war art school that has remained in its original use and survives in very good condition, both externally and internally. It clearly has abundant potential to be sympathetically upgraded or reconfigured to suit whatever plans the university may develop in the years to come.Along with demolishing the art school, the universitys plans for a radical shake-up of its estate include the planned closure of its Telford campus and replacing its city centre sports hall with a new medical school.A Historic England spokesperson said: We are currently in the process of assessing University of Wolverhamptons School of Art for listing. In due course, we will submit our advice to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), who will then make the final decision on the case.

  • Best Leaf Blowers in 2025

Our Picks Best overall cordless leaf blower Greenworks 80-volt cordless leaf blower View details $250 at Best Buy View details Quietest leaf blower Ryobi 40-volt Whisper Series cordless leaf blower View details $329 at The Home Depot View details Best cordless leaf blower on a budget Litheli 20-volt model U20BR00-0A220 View details $170 at Walmart View details Best leaf blower for professional use DK2 Elite Energy 57.6-volt walk behind leaf blower View details $2,470 at DK2 View details Table of Contents Which is the best leaf blower? If you're still manually raking the leaves in your yard, do yourself a favor in 2025 and invest in a leaf blower. It'll save you time and back pain while helping you keep your outdoor space nice and tidy. From cordless models to budget leaf blowers, we've tested the best outdoor leaf blower options across a range of price points to find the best options for your yard maintenance needs. If youve spent time in the suburbs or in more rural parts of the US, its tough to think of a time when leaf blowers didnt exist. Even if your family didnt have one, chances are a friend, neighbor or that guy down the street definitely did. Although larger walk-behind versions were available as early as the 1950s, the more traditional backpack and handheld types didn't appear until the 1970s, according to theOctober 1977 issue of Popular Science. The landscape is changing. All those leaf blowers we remember from years past were gas-powered. Today, some cities and states have outlawed gas-powered leaf blowers outright, and some areas restrict the days and times you can use any type of leaf blower because there's no worse pollution than noise pollution.Of course, if you'd rather get rid of your leaves without worrying about gas or batteries, a rake can do the job for much less money. But it'd be a bad idea to dismiss leaf blowers outright. They are helpful tools for keeping your yard neat with far more speed and efficiency. They also offer more variety, with different types and great options available. Choosing between gas leaf blowers or their electric counterparts is all about whether one suits your needs. Even so, our top pick is theGreenworks Pro 80-volt cordless leaf blower. This leaf blower is energy-efficient and has strong air power. Don't forget to consider price, noise level and weight when looking for a new one.Leaf blowers are one of the quickest and most effective ways of moving leaves and other bits of debris around on your property. They're much faster than raking and sweeping, though a fair bit noisier, so be aware of when you're going to use them. We've tested several of the standard electric models on the market today, considering things like how much power their airflow actually offers and other common concerns like battery life and noise level. Let's look at the best leaf blowers for your home and yard care needs. Best leaf blowers for 2025 $250 at Best Buy This 80-volt Greenworks model proved to be our best overall leaf blower and our most powerful leaf blower. During our propulsion tests, where we use each leaf blower to power a custom-built air cannon and see how far they'll shoot a weight, Greenworks was the clear winner in the "turbo mode" category, with an average distance of 34 feet and 11 inches. Even in standard mode, its average distance of 26 feet and 8 inches would have placed third overall in the turbo category. No other leaf blower we tested moved air with more power.Additionally, Greenworks seems to have the most efficient power relay in terms of being able to translate its voltage system and included battery into raw power. Our only real criticism on the power front is that the Greenworks leaf blower comes with the smallest battery capacity of all units we've tested -- a lowly 2.5 amp-hours. Still, that size battery is probably good enough for most medium and lighter jobs -- and the fact that the output is the highest of all the units tested means you'll likely spend less time on the same job than you would with other, less powerful leaf blowers. This is one of the heavier models we tested, at about 10 pounds, which can become tiring after you've held it for some time. As with most units, you do have a strap option and there are already metal hooks in place on the unit for that exact purpose. At $250, the cost is relatively average among the models we tested, so I would consider this a great buy. If you also own any other Greenworks 80-volt battery-platform tools, the leaf blower's battery can power those, too. $329 at The Home Depot This Ryobi unit had a fair showing overall. Only one other leaf blower we tested cost less, and it outperformed a few models that cost more in our propulsion tests. That left it as a reasonable middle-of-the-pack performer -- but if you're looking for something quiet, it might be the exact leaf blower you're looking for. While all of the other leaf blowers we tested hit decibel levels nearing 100dB, the Ryobi blower was the quietest, ringing in at a more moderate 81.5dB.Like the Greenworks model, the Ryobi leaf blower's battery is compatible with other Ryobi tools, making some nice added value for brand loyalists. With a massive tool platform behind it, and at a time when restrictions on non-electric leaf blowers are on the rise, this is an easy pick. $170 at Walmart This Litheli unit is the cheapest on our list closely accompanied by Craftsman and Seyvum, and it's one of three models we tested that runs off 20 volts or less. Even so, it managed to punch above its weight in our tests, earning third and fourth places, respectively, in our normal and turbo mode propulsion tests (excluding the DK2 model).Another key point: It's also one of the lighter leaf blowers we tested. That makes it a great choice for anyone who might find a heavier leaf blower exhausting to carry. The above-average performance, the lightweight design, and the appealingly low price point make the Litheli leaf blower our best budget pick for the leaf blower category.

  • Ill-fated Nintendo PlayStation's first game was a space shooter, says former exec Shuhei Yoshida

Ill-fated Nintendo PlayStation's first game was a space shooter, says former exec Shuhei YoshidaAnd his thoughts on the Switch 2 reveal.Image credit: Game Arts / Sony News by Ed Nightingale Deputy News Editor Published on Feb. 4, 2025 The legendary, unreleased Nintendo PlayStation was due to get an unnamed 2D space shooter as its first game - and the project was almost finished. It's well-documented how Sony and Nintendo first partnered on an ill-fated disc drive add-on for the SNES - a project that ultimately resulted in Sony launching the PlayStation as its own console. But in a new interview with MinnMax, former PlayStation exec Shuhei Yoshida discussed playing the prototype Nintendo PlayStation system for the first time. The first game everyone played, said Yoshida, was a 2D (or 2.5D) space shooter with assets streamed from the disc to offer richer graphics than had been seen at the time.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Xbox Developer Direct - four promising games also coming to PlayStation.Watch on YouTubeYoshida compared the graphics to Silpheed developed by Game Arts that was released on Sega's Mega CD and used pre-rendered animation as a full motion video background.Yoshida said he doesn't remember who developed or directed the game, though he wouldn't be surprised if the game still existed in Sony's archives on a CD.As the Nintendo PlayStation was never released - and only one prototype seemingly still exists - Yoshida's comments are the only snippet we have of what kind of games players could have expected from the system.Speaking of Nintendo, Yoshida also thought the Switch 2 announcement could have been a "larger reveal". "I am surprised there are not many surprises," he said, adding that the mouse controller was the only real shock. The mouse functionality is something Yoshida can see being used for FPS games, he said. "But hopefully because it's Nintendo they'll use it in some more weird, bizarre, amazing way," he continued. "Something people wouldn't anticipate."Yoshida hopes Nintendo Switch 2's full reveal in April will show us something new that's still hidden to us about the console.Yoshida left PlayStation last month after over 30 years at Sony. He's since been discussing his time at the company and, in a previous interview, discussed how the PS Vita almost had Switch-like capabilities.

  • Nintendo admits sales "below expectations", as wait for Switch 2 continues
    www.eurogamer.net
Nintendo admits sales "below expectations", as wait for Switch 2 continuesCompany lowers forecast as hardware slumps 30%.Image credit: Nintendo / Eurogamer News by Tom Phillips Editor-in-Chief Published on Feb. 4, 2025 Nintendo has reported a huge drop in sales of its hardware and software, with Switch 1 console sales down 30.6 percent year-on-year for the nine months ending 31st December.Switch 1 software sales also fell significantly - down 24.4 percent. In a statement, Nintendo blamed the scale of the drop on tough comparisons with 2023, and the launches of both The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros Wonder.Sales of the aging Switch 1 have been falling for years, meanwhile, but Nintendo's latest results are worse than the company previously forecast. Alongside the impact of a poorer US dollar exchange rate, Switch 1's performance has now forced Nintendo to lower its expectations again for the remainder of the financial year. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart 9 have been revealed - but questions remain.Watch on YouTubeThe company is now forecasting its net sales for the financial year ending on 31st March as 1.19tn yen (6.16bn), down seven percent from its previous expectations, and its net profit as 270m yen (1.39m), down 10 percent. It wasn't all doom and gloom. New releases included The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, which sold 3.91m copies - a good number, though predictably nowhere near the sales of either Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom.Nintendo also launched Super Mario Party Jamboree, which sold an impressive 6.17m copies. And, of course, the unstoppable Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continued to sell well. It shifted another 5.38m copies over the last nine months of 2024, and now stands at a whopping 67.35m copies sold.Switch 1 now stands at 150.86m consoles sold to date, just shy of the Nintendo DS's lifetime total of 154m. While Nintendo should squeak past that, its less certain the console can reach the record 160m sales of PlayStation 2.How many more units can Switch 1 sell? Nintendo's software line-up currently looks slim, with Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition due in March, before Metroid Prime 4, which feels likely to be a Switch 2 cross-gen game, later this year.Switch 1 still has one final Pokmon game up its sleeve, Pokmon Legends Z-A, expected to arrive this summer. But it's now clear that Switch 2 can't come soon enough. We're next due an update from Nintendo - when presumably we'll hear about Switch 2's release date and price - in April.

However, many Fortnite players believe that the game developer will bring back the original Season 2 Battle Pass as well. Will you really have a chance to obtain exclusive Fortnite skins and emotes soon? Lets find out!Is Fortnite Season 2 Battle Pass coming back?Back in Fortnite Season 2, Epic Games released the first Battle Pass. Besides skins, owners of the pass were also able to unlock a couple of iconic emotes, such as The Worm. With the return of OG Season 2 on January 31, many members of the community believe that Epic will bring back the original Battle Pass as well. This is mostly based on a trailer, which shows Sparkle Specialist right after the its all back message. Furthermore, some players still think that Season 1 cosmetics should have never returned. The OG Season 2 trailer shows a teasing message. Image by VideoGamerTo start off, its important to clarify that Season 1 items have never been exclusive. From the very first Battle Pass, Epic Games clarified that the included cosmetics are exclusive. However, the first Fortnite season did not have a Battle Pass. Instead, it had a so-called Season Shop, which was never meant to be exclusive.Back in the summer of 2024, the company made seasonal passes non-exclusive.
