  • USAID Was Investigating Starlink Over Its Contracts in Ukraine | The agency was in the midst of a probe into the billionaire's company at the time of the assault.
    gizmodo.com
By Lucas Ropek Published February 5, 2025 | Comments (0) | Kenny Holston/The New York Times/Bloomberg via Getty Images Since coming into power, Elon Musks Department of Government Efficiency has barraged USAID, the international aid agency that dispenses food and supplies to nations all over the world. It is likely that the agency will soon be shuttered and could be subsumed into the U.S. State Department. Now, new reporting shows USAID was actually investigating one of Musks companies at the time that he attacked the agency. The Lever reported Tuesday that USAIDs inspector general was in the process of investigating its own public-private partnership between Musks Starlink and the Ukrainian government at the time that the billionaires DOGE crippled the agency. Publicly available information about that probe is still online. An announcement from last May reads: The USAID Office of Inspector General, Inspections and Evaluations Division, is initiating an inspection of USAIDs oversight of Starlink satellite terminals provided to the Government of Ukraine. Our objectives are to determine how (1) the Government of Ukraine used the USAID-provided Starlink terminals, and (2) USAID monitored the Government of Ukraines use of USAID-provided Starlink terminals. Musk has called the agency evil and a criminal organization, though the fact that USAID was investigating his company may suggest ulterior motivations for the billionaires vitriol. Its unclear what the Starlink probes status is right now. Musks criminal remarks are funny since it increasingly looks like Musks DOGE activities represent breaches of federal law and, therefore, may be construed as rampant criminal behavior. On Tuesday, the Washington Post noted that officials at half a dozen federal agencies had raised concerns over whether what Musk was doing was illegal. Those agencies included the Treasury Department, the Education Department, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the General Services Administration, the Office of Personnel Management, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the White House budget office, among others, the newspaper reported. DOGE also suffered its second lawsuit this week, when union groups that protect federal workers sued the organization over its hijacking of the Treasury computer systems. The litigation alleges that DOGE may be violating a federal privacy lawby allowing Musks stooges to access certain systems.DOGE has been staffed by a bunch of kids in their 20s who are now engaged in unprecedented, legally risky work. As far as I can tell, its basically Elon being followed around by a bunch of Gregs. If the bottom ever falls out of this thing and DOGE runs into legal trouble, its easy to imagine that Musks army of anti-bureaucracy grunts might be considered expendable. USAID has a long, controversial history and has often been accused by foreign governments of being a front for the CIA. While the agency dispenses aid to foreign countries, it has often been entangled in scandals. It hardly represents, as Sean Hannity recently put it, radical DEI, woke, transgender, you know, leftist, Green New Deal madness. Given its history, its obvious that Musks battle against the agency will play well with voters who earnestly believe Trump wants to destroy the deep state. That said, Elon Musk literally works for the deep state, so I dont know how his being in charge is any better.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Matt Novak Published February 4, 2025 By Todd Feathers Published February 4, 2025 By Matt Novak Published February 4, 2025 By Lucas Ropek Published February 3, 2025 By Matthew Gault Published February 3, 2025 By Matthew Gault Published February 3, 2025

  • Reddit community banned as user spat with Musk intensifies - BBC News

Reddit community banned as user spat with Musk intensifiesImage source, Getty ImagesArticle informationAuthor, Tom GerkenRole, Technology reporter2 hours agoReddit has temporarily banned one of its communities - and removed another - after X owner Elon Musk claimed comments made by the site's users about his employees were breaking the law. The r/WhitePeopleTwitter subreddit, which typically invites people to share funny posts from X, has been banned for 72 hours after some users posted comments calling for violence against members of the Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (Doge). They were responding to reports which suggested some Doge staff have been granted access to sensitive personal information of millions of Americans.Musk - who frequently champions his commitment to free speech - shared a post on X containing the comments, and stated: "they have broken the law".AdvertisementThe subreddit was banned soon afterwards.Reddit declined to comment, but directed the BBC to a public post it had made following the ban."Over the last few days, we've seen an increase in content in several communities that violate Reddit Rules," the post reads. "Debate and dissent are welcome on Reddit - threats and doxing are not."Musk has previously criticised legal action being taken against people for making comments online. In 2024, he responded to a video of a person purportedly being arrested for offensive comments online by asking "is this Britain or the Soviet Union?".Tensions growTensions have escalated between the billionaire and Reddit users in recent weeks, after more than 100 subreddits banned users from posting links to X in protest at Musk's controversial arm gesture at a rally celebrating Donald Trump's return to office. The billionaire twice extended his arm out straight as he thanked the crowd for "making it happen" - critics, including some historians, said it was a Nazi salute, while Musk dismissed that, saying comparisons with Hitler were "tired" and "dirty tricks".Video caption, Elon Musk draws scrutiny over arm gesture at post-inauguration rallyThe moderators of the r/WhitePeopleTwitter subreddit removed many of the offending comments after they became publicised, but this was not enough to prevent a temporary ban.Any attempt to access the subreddit now displays a message reading that it has been "temporarily banned due to a prevalence of violent content". "Inciting and glorifying violence or doxing are against Reddit's platform-wide rules," it states, adding the subreddit will reopen in 72 hours.Reddit has also taken action to issue a subreddit entitled r/IsElonDeadYet - in which a user posted near-daily that Musk had not passed away - with a permanent ban.Bans and threatsThe posts came in response to moves being reportedly made by the Doge - which is not a government department, but a team within the administration. The team has been given the job of radically reducing regulation and federal government spending.US media has reported the Trump administration gave Musk's deputies access to the federal payments system that controls the flow of trillions of dollars in government funds every year.It has led to backlash online with people criticising the decision, and the names of the Doge staff involved being shared publicly. But the decision to remove the subreddit may have been about more than Reddit enforcing its policies. On Monday, a prosecutor appointed by Trump said the FBI was investigating the "targeting" of Doge staff."Our initial review of the evidence presented to us indicates that certain individuals and/or groups have committed acts that appear to violate the law in targeting Doge employees," said United States Attorney for the District of Columbia Edward Martin. In a letter to Musk he posted on X, Mr Martin said he would "not tolerate threats against Does workers or law-breaking by the disgruntled". "Any threats, confrontations, or other actions in any way that impact their work may break numerous laws," he wrote."We will pursue any and all legal action against anyone who impedes your work or threatens your people."

  • Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 wouldn't be nearly as good if it wasn't this challenging
    www.vg247.com
It's a Hard LifeKingdom Come Deliverance 2 wouldn't be nearly as good if it wasn't this challengingHere I go, wading into the video game difficulty debate again.Image credit: Warhorse Studios Article by Connor Makar Staff Writer Published on Feb. 5, 2025 In Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, two angry dudes on the side of the road can kill you. They'll be looting a body, by a horse, as you roll up and immediately threaten you with a bad time. Take them on, and you might come out unscathed. But if you're caught in your noble-wear or with broken equipment a single hit will eat chunks from your life bar. This life which can only really be recovered meaningfully in a bed you own or a valuable potion. It's a hard life.A bed which, unless you want to risk getting arrested, must be one you own or pay for. A potion which you must either luckily stumble across, but at significant expense, or brew yourself. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is, among many other things, a saga of such hurdles. And without them, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 wouldn't be nearly as good as it is. These hurdles are the game! They are the journey. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Now, the video game difficulty debate has gone on for years and it's not gotten any less stale. Yes, I feel that people should probably be able to adjust some kind of difficulty bar to make things a bit easier generally speaking. I don't think it hurts anyone. However, I also respect the decision of developers to present a singular, intended difficulty, especially in games in which the struggle adds something more than just additional challenge for its own sake.Take Street Fighter 6. That game added a "modern" control scheme to help remove the barrier to entry inherently present in fighting games. Usually, you have to learn how to throw a fireball. You have to do the motions, then you have to be able to do it consistently, then you have to learn to do it quickly in a real match. Modern removes the directional inputs so it's far easier to perform such attacks. One can argue that building that muscle memory is a part of the long-term joy of self-improvement. I've certainly enjoyed getting better at fighting games over the years, but for the casual player who'll spend 20-30 hours in-game with friends that struggle doesn't really add much.In Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, the inherent challenge presents itself in high-stakes, costly decisions and time-consuming tasks. Henry, the main character in the game, is just some guy. He falls off a rock and forgets any Latin he may have learned, and he can't swing a sword super well. You fill the shoes of a wandering, largely useless dude. This guy, fresh from a tumble, shouldn't be able to craft a perfect sword in 30 seconds. He shouldn't be able to kill four bandits at once, and he shouldn't have a paranormal sense as to where the nearest Belladonna plant is. Yes, combat is very hard. | Image credit: Warhorse StudiosHenry is not Lu Bu, no matter how many points in strength he has, and to take away ample threat from even basic encounters would take away from the world building, narrative, and stakes of the game. If Henry can face off against hordes of Cumans without a sweat, the whole rigmarole falls apart. Why then would you need to brew potions to heal or save often. Why be sure to sleep often to regain your strength. If Henry had infinite carry capacity, then the whole economy falls apart. What benefit then does the player gain from the game's intricate trading system with its stolen property detection and haggle mechanics. Why lockpick anything? It's all connected. Parts compliment each other when working as intended, and drag each other down when circumvented. It would tear the roots in historical accuracy the Warhorse team so carefully nurtured. Because the act of Henry learning what he's good at is you learning what you're good at. I hate alchemy, it's for nerds. So I didn't spend much time looking for herbs. I did, however, pick up a nice counter attack with a one handed sword, and thus dedicated myself to a defensive agile playstyle. Henry followed suit. I actually managed to hit enemies with a bow more times than not, so Henry morphed into this agile scout, forgoing plate armour in favour of a quieter, nimble getup. It all naturally came together over my hours of play time, in a way that was deeply fulfilling. He who seeks revenge digs two graves. | Image credit: Warhorse Studios/VG247When it comes to difficulty, Souls games are the usual battleground. A game that too embraces challenge so that players get this celebratory eruption upon taking down that one boss that's had them stumped for hours. Taking away the combat difficulty there robs you of that, but you'd at least still be able to appreciate the lore, the world, the various quests.I actually think removing hurdles from Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is worse. I think adding a crosshair to ranged weapons, or lowering combat damage, or adding herb trackers on the map would each be taking an ace out of a house of wobbly house of cards. In my review posted yesterday, I gave it five stars. If I played the game on some hypothetical easy or story difficulty, it would be a full star worse. So, if you're curious about Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 today but are worried about how hard it all is, I'm begging you to brave it. Just give it a shot. It's entirely expected that you aren't amazing with everything, but there are routes for every kind of Henry to revel in. Give it a proper bash before you head to Nexusmods or other modding hubs to tone it down. You'd be playing a worse game if you cave too quickly.

  • Jurassic World Rebirth's first trailer goes back to where it all began, and yes, it still looks like it was a bad idea to bring dinosaurs back
    www.vg247.com
Cue The ThemeJurassic World Rebirth's first trailer goes back to where it all began, and yes, it still looks like it was a bad idea to bring dinosaurs backAnd it also suggests that making mutant dinosaurs probably wasn't a good idea either.Image credit: Universal News by Oisin Kuhnke Contributor Published on Feb. 5, 2025 After all this time, the first trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth reminds us that trying to bring dinosaurs back from the dead probably isn't a good idea. It's kind of ironic that a line like "your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should" is still stuck in the minds of so many Jurassic Park fans today, as you could easily switch out scientists with producers and apply it to the Jurassic World series. Yet here we are, three years on from Dominion with the first trailer for Rebirth, a film that's acting as a bit of a soft reboot for the series after the last entry didn't do so well with critics and fans, even if it made a billion dollars at the box office. You can check out the trailer for yourself below, which is, unsurprisingly, filled with a whole bunch of dinosaurs (and a few humans you're supposed to care about too).Watch on YouTubeA synopsis for the film explains that "five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planets ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures across land, sea and air within that tropical biosphere hold, in their DNA, the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind."To see this content please enable targeting cookies. The island they visit in question is seemingly the place where the original Jurassic Park did all of its testing, and it appears that some of those aforementioned scientists took some liberties in places. An interview with director Gareth Edwards (Star Wars: Rogue One) from Vanity Fair explained that the film features a fictitious dinosaur that's inspired by Star Wars' Rancor, H.R. Giger, and the original and classic T. rex, which you'll probably be able to spot in the trailer.Edwards is hoping to inject some scares into the series again, explaining that "Jurassic Park is a horror film in the witness protection program. Most people dont think of it like that. We all went to see it as kids. But I was scared shitless, to be honest, when I was at the cinema watching the T. rex attack. Its one of the most well-directed scenes in cinema history, so the bars really high to come on board and try and do this."You won't have to wait all that long to find out if he was successful or not, as the film is currently set to be released in cinemas this coming July 2.

  • Mini Review: Momodora: Moonlit Farewell (Switch) - This Exquisite Metroidvania Is The Series' Best
    www.nintendolife.com
We love it when a studio demonstrates significant growth and improvement with each of its subsequent projects. With Bombservice specifically, the team has always boasted a strong understanding of what makes Metroidvanias click, and with Momodora: Moonlit Farewell, its delivered what may well be its finest game yet.The latest chronological entry in the series, Moonlit Farewell is a noticeable step up from its already-excellent predecessor, Reverie Under the Moonlight, in terms of scope, visual design, and gameplay. Right from the start, youre greeted by stunning scenes of pixel-art wizardry, with Bombservice showcasing its mastery of colour and atmosphere. This extends to the characters and enemies, with each and every bizarre creature feeling both alien in design and yet perfectly suited to Momodoras ethereal world.Gameplay will feel familiar if youve played the previous entries, with main protagonist Momo utilising melee attacks and a long-range bow to deal damage. You obtain new, permanent abilities such as double-jump, sprint, and wall jump periodically throughout the game, while sigils can be found or bought from stores for additional perks. Experimentation to find which sigils best fit your playstyle is encouraged: do you want more potency in your Healing Bells or will you find more success in increasing the strength of your arrows?Exploring the world and defeating standard enemies rarely provides much of a challenge, but significant difficulty bumps rear their heads when taking on boss characters. Like all good action games, though, success comes when you take a step back, learn your foes attack patterns, and wait for the opportune moment to strike. As mentioned in our review of Minoria, however, our favourite encounters came with the ferocious one-on-one battles against bosses of a similar build to Momo herself. Monstrous, screen-filling creatures are great and look fantastic, but they can feel a tad shallow by comparison. The game does a lot to ensure that you never feel too lost. Friendly characters provide loose objectives to follow, giving a rough idea of where to go. Meanwhile, the map itself separates the various biomes via colour while also including handy icons to designate save points, stores, fishing spots (yes, you can fish!), and hidden items. There's still a fair bit of backtracking involved, but when the game looks this good, we don't mind quite so much.If we were to describe Momodora: Moonlit Farewell in one word, it would be exquisite. This isnt a game that necessarily attempts to do anything new in what is undoubtedly a crowded genre, but everything it does, it does very well. Its a slick experience with gorgeous visuals, engaging combat, and challenging, yet fair boss encounters. The soundtrack has also been noticeably improved over the previous game, making this a must-play for fans of the series and, indeed, Metroidvanias in general.

  • Google launches new AI models and brings thinking to Gemini
    techcrunch.com
Google launched its much-anticipated new flagship AI model, Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental, on Wednesday. The announcement was part of a series of other AI model releases. The company is also making its reasoning model, Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking, available in the Gemini app.Notably, Google is releasing these AI models as the tech world remains fixated on cheaper AI reasoning models offered by the Chinese AI startup DeepSeek. DeepSeeks models match or surpass the performance of leading AI models offered by American tech companies. At the same time, businesses can access DeepSeeks models through the companys API for a relative steal.Google and DeepSeek both released AI reasoning models in December, but DeepSeeks R1 got a lot more attention. Now, Google may be trying to put its Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking model in front of more eyes through its popular Gemini app.As for Gemini 2.0 Pro, thesuccessor to the Gemini 1.5 Pro modelGoogle launched last February, Google says that it is now the leading model in its Gemini AI model family. Google accidentally announced the Gemini 2.0 Pro models release in the Gemini apps changelog roughly a week ago. But this time, its for real. The company is releasing an experimental version of the model on Wednesday in its AI development platforms, Vertex AI and Google AI Studio. Gemini 2.0 Pro will also be available to subscribers to Gemini Advanced in the Gemini app.Specifically, the new Gemini Pro model excels at coding and handling complex prompts, per Google, and it comes with better understanding and reasoning of world knowledge than any of the companys previous models. Gemini 2.0 Pro can call tools like Google Search, and execute code on behalf of users.Gemini 2.0 Pros context window is 2 million tokens, meaning it can process about 1.5 million words in one go. Expressed another way, Googles newest AI model could ingest all seven books in the Harry Potter series in a single prompt and still have about 400,000 words left over.Google is also making its Gemini 2.0 Flash model generally available on Wednesday. This model was announced in December and is now available to all users of the Gemini app.Lastly, possibly to rival the excitement surrounding DeepSeeks models, Google is introducing a new, more cost-efficient AI model, Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite. The company says this model outperforms its Gemini 1.5 Flash model, but runs at the same price and speed.
