• Games Inbox: What will be in the February State of Play for PS5?
    metro.co.uk
Will we be seeing more of Death Stranding 2 this month? (Sony Interactive Entertainment)The Thursday letters page hopes for some imminent Bloodborne remastered news, as one reader makes a startlingly well-timed prediction about Nintendo. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.ukDirect bingoSo there seems to be a good chance therell be a State of Play this month, based on previous years and rumours, so what are people thinking will be featured? I see on X that Hideo Kojima seems to be getting a new trailer ready for Death Stranding 2 and its out this year, so that seems a definite.Ghost Of Ytei is also out this year, so I guess thats the next most likely, but I hope we see something else brand new. The problem with something like Ghost Of Ytei is that, after playing the first one, I feel I can already guess what the sequel is. Which doesnt mean Im completely uninterested in it, but I felt Ghost Of Tsushima outstayed its welcome as it is and I dont really need another one. What Id much rather know is what Housemarque and Bluepoint Games are working on. Although I wonder if Bluepoint has been doing anything after its game got cancelled. That would be a real shame if theyve been forced to just waste the last few years.Id cry if thats the same for Housemarque though because I loved Returnal and I really admire them for saying no to a sequel and doing something new again.AnselThe end pointI love how these giant American companies keep thinking they can buy Nintendo and then they just turn round and laugh in their face, even in the darkest days of the Wii U! It wouldnt be surprised if thereve been other attempts too, that weve never heard about. Google or Amazon seem like the sort that wouldve seen buying Nintendo as a shortcut into the games industry. And its always about a shortcut with these companies. We know from the disgusting email from Phil Spencer that he had zero respect for Nintendos independence and just saw it as another trophy for his wall. And this is a guy who, on some level, likes and understands the games industry. Just think what some soulless suit from Meta or Apple would have thought about the new asset theyd just acquired. The day Nintendo is bought out, or releases games on PC or whatever other terrible idea people suggest for them is the day gaming ends. Especially with the rapid decline of PlayStation you can just stick a fork in it right then and write video games off as a 50 year old fad.IshiTwo-faced truthInterestingly, Ive learned of Nintendos attachment to the number two branding since Switch 2s reveal. The time of the Switch 2 reveal was 22:02 in Japan. The trailer is 2 mins 22 seconds long. The first Switch 2 Direct is on the second of the month (prepare a bucket of salt for April Fools Day) and that date is 2 months, 2 weeks and 2 days after the consoles initial reveal.Shall we expect it to go live at 2pm somewhere?Bad EditGC: Well, thats pretty spooky. You sent this email just hours before Nintendo, for no apparent reason, announced the time of the Nintendo Direct as 2pm. For your next trick, can you take a guess at what games theyll show?Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukThree roles to playNeed a question answered. Im considering buying a role-playing game this month and its because its my favourite genre, but Im eyeing three releases and the first smash hit of 2025 is on the radar. Im of course referring to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. But Im also considering Metaphor: ReFantazio and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Which just coincidentally released for PC.Ive heard Deliverance 2 is fantastic, but Im turned off by the realism. A hunger system, the dirt and cleanliness requirements, and the horrific combat system. Its clearly a niche title, but I see my two other choices are more mainstream. So, Id like to ask GC and readers alike, which title should I go for? Its for my handheld, by the way, The OneXPlayer OneXFly.Shahzaib SadiqGC: Deliverance 2 is good; we wouldnt say it was fantastic. The other two are in our top four games of last year.Raiders of the lost ARCTo answer captainbloodsnots HDMI cable query, if the AV receiver is not 4K compatible then take the high speed HDMI cable from the PlayStation 5 and plug that into a 4K capable port in your TV. Then on the TV connect a high speed HDMI cable from the ARC port on your TV and plug it into a port on your AV receiver. Select the channel or port on your AV receiver, for it to process the sound coming from the TV. On the TV select the HDMI port your PlayStation 5 is plugged into. You must have passthrough selected and turned on your AV receiver to get 5.1 surround sound; you may need to choose multi-channel surround as the output on the receiver. The ARC (audio return channel) will bypass the TV for the audio but display the 4K content the TV is receiving from the PlayStation 5, as long as that HDMI source is selected on the TV. You may have to select and specify the output in the receiver settings. Make sure all HDMI cables are high-speed 2.1 or 2.2 rated. Sounds complicated but its not.Fatclock (gamertag)/FaTcLoCk1978 (PSN ID)GC: That seems very thorough, well done.Sony who?I guess with the Bloodborne takedown activity from Sony and a February State of Play likely, many will hope a remake/remaster will be announced at it. Maybe with a PC release.God knows, Sony could do with a PR win these days and thatll definitely earn them some points.I dont know if its due to their live service plans or just a fairly traditional console maker lull in output, but its marked how little Sony are in my thoughts for games Im excited about this year. Its all Xbox and Nintendo and Rockstar. But as many, maybe all eventually, of those Xbox games will arrive on PlayStation and Sony nabbing the best third party exclusives like Silent Hill 2 its probably not going to harm them at all.But a surprise on the first party front at a State of Play would be nice.SimundoAny excuseI love what complete white noise that excuse is from EA, for why Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed. As GC pointed out, the obvious comparison to make was with Baldurs Gate 3, which doesnt have anything like live service options or shared world features whatever exactly thats supposed to mean.It failed because EAs marketing was terrible and they clearly had no faith in it form the start. Their trailer for it seemed positively embarrassed of what it is, which I found to be a very enjoyable action role-player with excellent combat. So instead of thinking where they got things wrong theyre going to blame the developer and use it as another excuse to give up on a single-player games.GhiveHidden purposesOne thing that intrigues me about the Switch 2, and the application of a mouse mode for the Joy-Cons isnt so much what games will use it but why would they bother? Maybe Im being unimaginative in only thinking of applications for PC type titles and it wont just work in the same way as a regular mouse, but how much of the current Switchs userbase play the console in a situation where having a Joy-Con as a mouse is even viable?I dont think Ive ever heard of or seen anyone settling down to use their Switch on a desk or table in a way that would allow them to roam around with a mouse next to it. Even in tabletop mode its on small tables on trains or planes or kids in coffee shops. Casting my mind back to the adverts of the original Switch, the one with cool millennials at rooftop parties or out walking their dogs some bloke sat at a desk in his bedroom playing Pikmin on his own, as if its a PC doesnt seem like a market Nintendo will be making a play for?Its true there is likely something we havent seen, some gimmick that will really show this to be a game changer. However much like existing motion controls (or even the touchscreen in the current Switch) I only see it being of interest to a niche part of the market. Featured in a few third party titles early doors, that dont sell very well, before being relegated to future Mario Party and WarioWare titles.MarcGC: We can see exactly where youre coming from. Well be very interested to see how Nintendo themselves uses the feature and if its ever a primary control system or essentially an optional extra.Inbox also-ransGiven that news about Age Of Empires coming to PlayStation 5 I would all but guarantee that means theyre also coming to the Switch 2 with mouse support. Wouldnt be surprised if they were launch games even.DaliCapcom are really terrible at putting on their own Directs, eh? I dont think I learned a single thing from the one on Tuesday night. The didnt even show any new footage for Onimusha!XreaMore TrendingEmail your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.ukThe small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend. • Physical Movie Releases Shouldnt Be This Annoying to Get
    gizmodo.com
With Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and more shopping destinations removing their film and music media, were missing buying our little entertainment treats while on errandsthe adult version of being a kid racing up and down toy aisles to see whats new. Even shopping online for movies has lost some of its enjoyment, especially if youre a physical media collector, with limited editions of films selling out too quickly if you missed the drop. One recent example: Walmarts Wicked steelbookthe retailer was the only one to carry the collectors editionsold out online months in advance of the films physical media release this past week. Fine, ok, things sell out online. But on top of that, fans like myself who were hoping to hunt down the Wicked steelbook in stores have also run into obstacles. Not only has the release proven difficult to find, theres been a bit of confusion about whether the steelbook release was actually online-only. On Walmarts web site, the option to search nearby stores is clickablebut when you hit it, no nearby stores are reflected as actually carrying it. Meanwhile the shipping and delivery options are greyed out, which is frustrating because not only are entertainment aisles in stores rare these days, but the scarcity is hitting online too. Walmart.com But you can buy the standard cover, which is aesthetically less appealing; instead of the movie poster, it opts for big close-ups of the films main characters. And that style choice has become so prevalent on family films, especially with animation. Want to add Pixars Toy Story to your collection with the poster art from the original film? Nopebest you can do is get one with Woodys giant forehead slapped across the front. And yes, I get that this could seem like a childless collectors gripe, but I have a kid and Id much rather have the gorgeous imagery of the poster art as part of their physical media collection. My childhood memory is of my VHS clamshell with Buzz and Woody flying over Andys bed. Let kids grow up with taste! Disney Pixar Its becoming harder for upcoming generations to rediscover the power of actually owning the things they buy. We need Gen Z to save video stores and sections like they did books at Barnes and Noble, something they did thanks to social media and popularizing the stores as hangout spaces. Theyre already being pushed out of movie theaters thanks to pricing, meaning theyre missing out on the experience of going to the cinema, then going to the store to look around for movies. That was a fundamental part of my teen years, and its something that seems to be getting lost in the sea of internet consumerism. Having a kid now, Im learning to treat the things they grow up with with more reverence, much like when my father would buy the special edition Star Wars trilogy set with the gold box and Vader slip. Thats a clear image of my childhood, going to the video section with him and picking it out to replace the previous versions we had at home. Id like my kid to have those kinds of memories over just an email alert and a click of a button. Admittedly, I havent been great at following through on those intentions; its easier for me to be like, Ok, Tuesday Target run: toilet paper, baby wipes, cheese, and Moana 2 steelbook once all the adulting is done. How can it be easy to remember when a collectors edition movie release will go up for pre-sale, when as soon as I hit a browser or open my phone Im hit with distractions that make me forget why you reached for it in the first place? I must confess I was on my phone at a quarter to midnight refreshing the Walmart app for another shot at the Wicked seelbook the night before the street dateonly to be thrown off by Reels to pass the time, and then it was 12:30 a.m. and it was sold out.The push to digital life and leasing things in a space where anything can just suddenly disappear is one of the ugly takeways from our current state of dystopia. Its been amazing to visit Barnes and Noble during this resurgence in shoppers who are getting to know the beauty of wandering through curated spaces to inspire knowledge and create more tastemakers of physical storytelling culture to pass down. Its cute to see tablet-raised youth seek out books, records, and CDs, and hopefully time will extend their interest to movies too. At least B&N carries Criterion releases, which happen to include a really neat edition of Pixars Wall-Eat least. So while, were sad we dont have the Wicked steelbook in hand, well hope to fare with better luck upon the physical release of Nosferatu, which better come in a coffin. Want more io9 news? Check out when to expect the latest Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, whats next for the DC Universe on film and TV, and everything you need to know about the future of Doctor Who.

  • An Antarctic Fossil From 69 Million Years Ago Reveals Earths Early Birds
    www.discovermagazine.com
The ancestors of modern waterfowl werent all that odd. Diving for fish and other prey in the waters of Antarctica, they looked like todays birds, but were they truly modern?A new paper published today in Nature tells us all about these ancestors of modern-day ducks. Assessing a newly found fossil of Vegavis iaai from the Late Cretaceous around 69 million years ago, the paper confirms the classification of the species as a truly modern bird, not wholly unlike the ducks and geese of today.Few birds are as likely to start as many arguments among paleontologists as Vegavis, said Christopher Torres, a study author and a now-professor at the University of the Pacific, according to a press release. This new fossil is going to resolve a lot of those arguments. Chief among them: Where is Vegavis perched in the bird tree of life?Modern or Not?Around 20 years ago, a team of paleontologists identified Vegavis iaai for the first time, citing a fossil from Antarctica, around 68 million years to 66 million years old. At the time of the identification, the paleontologists classified the species as a modern bird, but their classification has been controversial and tricky to confirm since. Part of the problem was that all of the fossils that paleontologists had to work with were partial fossils featuring skeletons without skulls. But the newly found fossil changes all that, featuring what the previously found fossils lack. Collected in Antarctica in 2011 as part of the Antarctic Peninsula Paleontology Project, the 69-million-year-old specimen is an almost complete skull, providing new insights into the species classification. Featuring a modern-shaped beak and a modern-shaped space for a brain with traits that are consistent with those of waterfowl today, the fossil suggests that the initial classification of Vegavis is a correct one, with the Late-Cretaceous fossil representing one of the earliest modern birds ever discovered. A Not-So-Odd BirdAccording to the authors of the new paper, the other birds that were around 69 million years ago were strange and not so similar to the birds of today.Places with any substantial fossil record of Late Cretaceous birds, like Madagascar and Argentina, reveal an aviary of bizarre, now-extinct species with teeth and long bony tails, only distantly related to modern birds, said Patrick OConnor, a study author and a professor at Ohio University, according to the release. Something very different seems to have been happening in the far reaches of the Southern Hemisphere, specifically in Antarctica.Unlike the Antarctic of today, Late-Cretaceous Antarctica was warmer and wetter, with temperate weather and lush vegetation. How this environment shaped early birds into modern birds is hard to say exactly, though it is possible that it established some of the traits seen in modern waterfowl today. This fossil underscores that Antarctica has much to tell us about the earliest stages of modern bird evolution, OConnor said in the release.Beyond its insights into the evolution of the earliest modern birds, the new paper also paints a picture of how Vegavis lived. The bird was able to propel itself through Antarctic waters in pursuit of fish and other prey thanks to its powerful feet, and it snapped them up thanks to its powerful jaws, a feeding strategy thats more similar to a modern loon than a modern duck.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards. • Meteorites From the Earliest Planets Reveal How Earth Lost Certain Elements
    www.discovermagazine.com
A medley of elements make life on Earth possible, yet the ways in which our planet has gained them and lost some in the process have been on scientists minds for years. The major building blocks of life, like water, carbon, and nitrogen, often take center stage, but scientists have recently made sense of another foundational component in Earths framework moderately volatile elements (MVEs).MVEs, containing such elements as zinc and copper, work in tandem with life-essential elements like oxygen and carbon to form the basis of planetary chemistry. However, MVEs are not as abundant as they once were on Earth. In a new study published in the journal Science Advances, researchers have figured out how our planets MVEs were depleted over time, detailing a crucial chapter in Earths early history.Meteorites From the Early Solar SystemIn the study, the researchers sought to understand what led to Earth and Mars containing significantly fewer MVEs than chondrites, which are primitive meteorites that hold clues about planetary formation during the dawn of the solar system. To find answers, the researchers turned to iron meteorites remnants of the metallic cores of the earliest planetary building blocks. These budding celestial bodies, otherwise known as planetesimals, are thought to be the initial form of Earth and other planets in the solar system, developing around 4.6 billion years ago as dust particles coalesced. We found conclusive evidence that first-generation planetesimals in the inner solar system were unexpectedly rich in these elements, said Damanveer Grewal, a professor of experimental cosmochemistry and geochemistry at Arizona State University and lead author of the study, in a statement. This discovery reshapes our understanding of how planets acquired their ingredients. How MVEs Went MissingPreviously, many scientists believed that MVEs were diminished on Earth because they never fully condensed in the early solar system or escaped during planetesimal differentiation differentiation describes the assembly of planetary materials into layers; the process of differentiation on Earth, for example, caused the heaviest materials (like iron and nickel) to sink and manifest into a molten core, while less-dense silicates formed a mantle and the lightest silicates formed a thin crust. The study established that differentiation, however, was not responsible for the loss of MVEs. Instead, early planetesimals retained their MVEs even during differentiation. This means the original materials that eventually developed into Earth and Mars lost their MVEs later on in the formation process, during a period of violent collisions between small cosmic bodies that caused the planets to expand.A New Planetary TheoryThe researchers determined that many inner solar system planetesimals kept MVE abundances (similar to the high concentration of MVEs found in chondrites) as they accumulated more material for growth and experienced differentiation. In this case, the planetesimal that was the beginning stage of Earth didnt drop its MVEs at the start of its development. Instead, the loss of its MVEs occurred over a prolonged period of time, setting the stage for the chemical composition of Earth. Our work redefines how we understand the chemical evolution of planets, said Grewal. It shows that the building blocks of Earth and Mars were originally rich in these life-essential elements, but intense collisions during planetary growth caused their depletion.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards.
