  • World of Warcrafts Player Housing System Already Wants to Differentiate Itself From Final Fantasy XIV
    gizmodo.com
For almost as long asWorld of Warcraft has been around, players have been asking to be able to put down more permanent roots in its fantasy world of Azeroth in the form of player-owned housinga feature that has spent decades flourishing in other MMOs following in the wake of Warcrafts rejuvenation of the genre, while largely being kept at arms length inWoW itself. Late last year, Blizzard announced that it would finally be acquiescing to those demands, and now, the studio is beginning to highlight how itll all workand some key ways it wants differentiate its own version from similar players in the MMO space. Today Blizzard revealed the first early details of how it plans for player housing to work when the function goes live with the release of the two-decade-old games next expansion,Midnight. It is, unsurprisingly, similar in a lot of ways to how player housing has worked for years in other MMORPGs likeThe Elder Scrolls Online or, perhaps most famously in the genre right now,Final Fantasy XIV, where player housing is an incredibly popular, and occasionally controversial, feature. At launch players will be able to build homes in two residential zones: one for each ofWarcrafts primary factions, with an Alliance housing area inspired by the human civilizations in Elwynn Forest, and a Horde area inspired by the rocky deserts of Durotar. From there, theyll be able to claim a plot in a neighborhood, customize a house as much as they want (using a mix of items procured in-game or via Warcrafts real-world cash shop), and then use it as a social hub for other players, and across their own characters, regardless of what faction they belong to. A Night Elf cant buy land in Horde territory, but theycan show up and relax among the Tauren and Goblins in a home established by a Horde character on their players account. All this is pretty standard for what players have not just wanted, but come to expect from a housing feature through years of watching other MMOs adopt the function while Blizzard repeatedly pushed back on it. World of Warcraft is late to the game here, and Blizzard clearly understands that. But in being late to the game,Warcraft has been allowed the opportunity to look at stress points in the systems adoption elsewhere, and start planning to avoid itespecially, it seems, with casting a minds eye to the issues Final Fantasy XIV players have with how Square-Enix handles player housing. How Blizzard plans to approach that is two-fold in ways that particularly seem pointed atFinal Fantasy XIV. The first is a play towards broad accessibility: player housing in World of Warcraft wont be tied to players in-game financial status (or more specifically, wont be restricted by exorbitant requirements or high purchase costs), and wont be distributed through a lottery system. The second is maintenance: once a player has a house, they wont lose it or their plot of land, even if their subscription to the game lapses. Wide adoption is a primary consideration for us as well. Most players should want a house in Azeroth, and if a player wants a house in Azeroth, they can have a house in Azeroth, Blizzards development blog reads in part. Furthermore, Housing is being designed to scale with the players interest. If someone wants to spend dozens of hours a week on their house, thats great! If theyre only interested in coming and going once or twice a month, thats great, too!Why that feels particularly pointed towardsFFXIV players is that those are some of the biggest grumbles they have about the games otherwise wildly adored housing system. A house in FFXIV is incredibly hard to get, not only because a plot of land can cost tens of millions depending on size, but since 2022, the majority of access to those plots has been managed by a lottery system that holds your bid in escrow, in an attempt to mitigate large groups of players banding together resources to buy out whole neighborhoods worth of limited land across Eorzeas myriad housing wards. Not only is there a randomized and price-based barrier, once you do have a plot, you have to keep regularly playingFFXIV to maintain ownershipplayers have 45 days since they last entered their house (not just logging into the game, but actually visiting the plot) before Square-Enix demolishes it, takes back your land, and puts it back up for sale. Its a controversial aspect of the system, one that the developers have had to repeatedly suspend in recent years to accommodate real-life events, ranging from mild things like the difficulty of logging into the game around the launch of Endwalker, or more recently when demolition was suspended across North American servers to allow players impacted by the LA wildfires time to eventually log into their virtual homes to savethem from destruction. Kind of grim!Blizzard might be incredibly late to the game on player housing, but at least its using that to its advantage in potentially improving on areas of stress other pioneers in the MMO field have faced implementing it themselves. Time will tell just whatWorld of Warcrafts housing system looks like in-gameMidnight is expected to release sometime later this year or into early nextbut the dream of affordable housing for all might be achievable in Azeroth, at least. The project was to fully renovate the client's home where he was born and raised. The surrounding area is lined with similar ready-built houses, and we needed to consider the line of sight between neighboring houses when planning the house.Save this picture! The client seemed to vaguely envision a post-renovation image of being surrounded by an earthy texture, so our challenge was to figure out how to propose this image in the renovation of this ready-built house. With this in mind, we designed the main second-floor LDK (living, dining, and kitchen) area with a distinctive earthy texture and a sense of presence that can be perceived both inside and outside.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Without changing the original functions of the building, we have arranged a bathroom and storage on the first floor, an LDK on the second floor, and private rooms on the third floor. One unique feature is that the kitchen/dining table, floor, walls, ceiling, etc., are all finished with a uniform texture. Specifically, we used PVC flooring and Porter's paint on the walls due to the weight limit, and we decided on the colors after repeated adjustments.Save this picture! To create the desired atmosphere on the second floor, we decided that the exterior walls would also need some modifications, and we demolished the existing exterior walls and balconies and built new ones. The first and third floors were renovated in a simple manner, resulting in an impressive interior and exterior renovation of the second floor.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officePublished on February 06, 2025Cite: "House Renovation in Suita / FujiwaraMuro Architects" 05 Feb 2025. • Civilization 7 - Ideologies Guide (Democracy, Fascism, And Communism)
    www.gamespot.com
In some of your campaigns in Sid Meier's Civilization 7, you might play nice with your neighbors--everyone's singing Kumbaya from the start all the way to the point when one of you sends a person to space. However, it's more likely that conflict is bound to arise, especially due to disparate belief systems. Here's our guide to help you with the best Ideologies in Civilization 7.The best Ideology in Civilization 7 - Democracy, Fascism, or CommunismThe Civilization 7 Ideology system plays a key role during the Modern Age, a time when nations have unburdened themselves with superstition and feudalism, ready to take the next step in industrialization. However, the ideological belief that you choose might cause you to make new enemies. This then leads to the Military Legacy objective where you earn points from capturing the settlements of your opponents. How to unlock IdeologiesYou can unlock a Civilization 7 Ideology once you study the Political Theory civic during the Modern Age. Three panels with their respective options should then appear: Democracy, Fascism, and Communism. You need to study the first tenet in any of these panels, which then locks you in to that particular belief. However, take note that civs that focus on other tenets will be considered ideological enemies, causing issues with your diplomatic relations. Democracy civics and rewardsDemocracy:Social Policy: Fireside Chats - +4 happiness from specialists; -3 gold in towns.Social Policy: Suffrage - +3 culture from specialists; -3 production in towns.Free units: +4 infantry units.Free attribute points: +1 Cultural and +1 Diplomatic.Liberalism:Social Policy: Free Press - Towns gain culture equal to your Cultural attribute; -5 science in cities.Social Policy: Welfare State - Towns gain happiness equal to your Diplomatic attribute; -5 production in cities.Progressivism:Social Policy: Avante Garde - +2 culture and happiness from displayed Great Works.Social Policy: New Deal - +30% production when constructing Wonders.Social Policy: Their Finest Hour - +25% production when training air units; +5 combat strength for air units in your own territory. Fascism civics and rewardsFascism:Social Policy: Assembly Line - +3 production from specialists; -3 food in towns.Social Policy: Dirigisme - +6 gold from specialists; -3 happiness in towns.Free units: +3 cavalry units.Free attribute points: +1 Economic and +1 Militaristic.Radicalism:Social Policy: Martial Law - Towns gain production equal to your Militaristic attribute; -5 happiness in cities.Social Policy: Propaganda - Towns gain gold equal to your Economic attribute; -5 culture in cities.Absolutism:Social Policy: Military-Industrial Complex - +50% production when training military units; +1 gold maintenance for all units.Social Policy: Strategic Railways - +20% production when constructing buildings and improvements in cities with a Rail Station.Social Policy: Scorched Earth - +5 combat strength for all units when attacking; +25% yields and HP from pillaging. Communism civics and rewardsCommunism:Social Policy: Productive Forces Determinism - +3 science from specialists; -3 gold in towns.Social Policy: Proletariat - +6 food from specialists; -3 happiness in towns.Free units: +3 ranged units.Free attribute points: +1 Expansionist and +1 Scientific.Centralism:Social Policy: Collectivization - Towns gain food equal to your Expansionist attribute; -5 happiness in cities.Social Policy: Naukograd - Towns gain science equal to your Scientific attribute; -5 culture in cities.Socialism:Social Policy: Defense of the Motherland - +3 combat strength for all land units in your own territory.Social Policy: Police State - +8 happiness in cities whenever you're at war.Social Policy: Public Works - +30% production towards completing projects. The best Civilization 7 IdeologyOddly enough, we feel that the best Civilization 7 Ideology is Fascism, with Communism coming as a close second:Fascism complements a highly aggressive playstyle for warmongers, especially if you plan on conquering your neighbors to claim a Military Victory. The three free cavalry units, in most cases, tend to be Tanks at this stage, allowing you to crush your foes with ease. Then, when you add Military-Industrial Complex, you'd end up with an unstoppable juggernaut.Communism, meanwhile, works best for those who want to focus on a Science Victory. Both Productive Forces Determinism and Naukograd add significant bonuses. Later, once you're enacting Space Race Projects, Public Works grants some much-needed boosts to speed things up.Sadly, Democracy lags behind, given its focus on Culture. The problem is that a Cultural Victory in the Modern Age isn't affected by cultural gains per turn, unlike in previous games. Instead, you rely on Explorers and Artifacts, far removed from any perks you might obtain from these civics. In fact, the extra production from Communism: Public Works is better if you're going for a Cultural Victory since you still need to complete the World's Fair Project to win. Capturing settlements for a Military Victory based on opposing ideological beliefsRegardless of what we consider as the best Ideology in Civilization 7, it bears mentioning that the tenet you choose determines how you progress if you're going for a Military Victory. Here are a few things to remember:Aside from other requirements, you need to amass Ideology Points by capturing settlements from other civs. Those with no Ideology grant +2 points per settlement, and those with an opposing Ideology grant +3 points per settlement. However, you won't earn points if the settlement is: Given and recaptured - Give a city as part of a deal and conquer it again come the next war.City-state territories - City-states that you conquer do not grant points.Resettled tiles - Let's say you earn points upon capturing a settlement and you decide to raze it. If another leader resettles on the same tile/area, and you conquer those lands again, you won't earn points. That does it for our Civilization 7 Ideology guide. Don't forget that earning points is just one part of the Military Legacy path in the Modern Age. You still need to complete Operation Ivy (or fulfill other victory conditions) to conclude the campaign.Explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate your way to victory with the help of our Sid Meier's Civilization 7 guides hub.
