• Ariana DeBose Reveals One of Her Dream Broadway Roles
    www.denofgeek.com
Its safe to say Ariana DeBose knows her way around the American theater. While the multi-hyphenated talent has been mostly focusing on movies as of late (after all, she won an Oscar for Steven Spielbergs remake of West Side Story in 2022), DeBoses career began and will forever be linked with the stage. Before film and streaming, DeBose made her acting debut in the original cast of Bring It On: The Musical in 2011, which in turn paved the way for appearing in various Broadway productions throughout the 2010s, including in the original cast of Hamilton and as the title character in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, for which she was nominated for a Tony. Hollywood has come calling since, but DeBose hasnt forgotten her roots; in fact, shes hosted the Tony Awards three times in just the past five years. All of which is to say when we sat down with DeBose to discuss her new film project, Love Hurts, it still seemed prudent to ponder about a future on Broadwayand what might be some of the iconic musical roles DeBose would like to still play.If I told you, it wouldnt be a surprise, DeBose at first teases. There are many characters that I do love, and some of them wont make sense but you could say Velma Kelly is a touchstone. I actually love the Broadway production of Chicago because its simple, its not doing too much, it stands on its own, and thats why its run for so many years. It will never go out of style.Indeed, the current iteration of the Kander and Ebb musical about independent women in Jazz Age Chi-Townand the men they kill along the wayhas been playing in New Yorks Theater District since 1996 and is currently the longest-running musical still playing on the Great White Way. It is also a revival of the original Bob Fosse production from 1975, which perhaps serendipitously starred Chita Rivera in the role of Velma Kelly. Rivera also originated on stage the character of Anita in West Side Story. Thats the role DeBose won an Oscar for reinterpreting in this century.I will play Velma Kelly one day, DeBose continues. I dont know when that day will be. But I got some things up my sleeve, which is why Im not telling you my ultimate goal, because I want you to be surprised when I do it.In the meantime, DeBose is getting to let her action badass flag fly in Love Hurts, a comedy genre film where her Rose is a semi-femme fatale agent of chaos in the life of mild-mannered Gable (Ke Huy Quan), a pleasant seeming realtor who is revealed to be a retired assassin that once was ordered to put DeBoses Rose in the ground. Instead he let her go, not expecting her to ever show up again in his life. Its complicatedas are fight sequences that let DeBose indulge in a different kind of choreography than of the Broadway variety.I look at fight sequences, action sequences, and its just another form of dance, DeBose explains. Its the same palette, different colors, right? So its not like Im going to fight from a blue space. Im fighting from blood-burgundy and burnt orange, and it was just really fun, and it was really freeing and I could trust my body, trusted the team around me to let me try. If you talk to [director Jonathan Eusebio], hell tell you I was always like, Can I do more? Can I kick my legs more?Love Hurts will kick into theaters on Friday, Feb. 7, just in time for Valentines Day.

  • What a return to supersonic flight could mean for climate change
    www.technologyreview.com
This article is from The Spark, MIT Technology Reviews weekly climate newsletter. To receive it in your inbox every Wednesday, sign up here. As Ive admitted in this newsletter before, I love few things more than getting on an airplane. I know, its a bold statement from a climate reporter because of all the associated emissions, but its true. So Im as intrigued as the next person by efforts to revive supersonic flight. Last week, Boom Supersonic completed its first supersonic test flight of the XB-1 test aircraft. I watched the broadcast live, and the vibe was infectious, watching the hosts anticipation during takeoff and acceleration, and then their celebration once it was clear the aircraft had broken the sound barrier. And yet, knowing what I know about the climate, the promise of a return to supersonic flight is a little tarnished. Were in a spot with climate change where we need to drastically cut emissions, and supersonic flight would likely take us in the wrong direction. The whole thing has me wondering how fast is fast enough. The aviation industry is responsible for about 4% of global warming to date. And right now only about 10% of the global population flies on an airplane in any given year. As incomes rise and flight becomes more accessible to more people, we can expect air travel to pick up, and the associated greenhouse gas emissions to rise with it. If business continues as usual, emissions from aviation could double by 2050, according to a 2019 report from the International Civil Aviation Organization. Supersonic flight could very well contribute to this trend, because flying faster requires a whole lot more energyand consequently, fuel. Depending on the estimate, on a per-passenger basis, a supersonic plane will use somewhere between two and nine times as much fuel as a commercial jet today. (The most optimistic of those numbers comes from Boom, and it compares the companys own planes to first-class cabins.) In addition to the greenhouse gas emissions from increased fuel use, additional potential climate effects may be caused by pollutants like nitrogen oxides, sulfur, and black carbon being released at the higher altitudes common in supersonic flight. For more details, check out my latest story. Boom points to sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) as the solution to this problem. After all, these alternative fuels could potentially cut out all the greenhouse gases associated with burning jet fuel. The problem is, the market for SAFs is practically embryonic. They made up less than 1% of the jet fuel supply in 2024, and theyre still several times more expensive than fossil fuels. And currently available SAFs tend to cut emissions between 50% and 70%still a long way from net-zero. Things will (hopefully) progress in the time it takes Boom to make progress on reviving supersonic flightthe company plans to begin building its full-scale plane, Overture, sometime next year. But experts are skeptical that SAF will be as available, or as cheap, as itll need to be to decarbonize our current aviation industry, not to mention to supply an entirely new class of airplanes that burn even more fuel to go the same distance. The Concorde supersonic jet, which flew from 1969 to 2003, could get from New York to London in a little over three hours. Id love to experience that flightmoving faster than the speed of sound is a wild novelty, and a quicker flight across the pond could open new options for travel. One expert I spoke to for my story, after we talked about supersonic flight and how itll affect the climate, mentioned that hes actually trying to convince the industry that planes should actually be slowing down a little bit. By flying just 10% slower, planes could see outsized reductions in emissions. Technology can make our lives better. But sometimes, theres a clear tradeoff between how technology can improve comfort and convenience for a select group of people and how it will contribute to the global crisis that is climate change. Im not a Luddite, and I certainly fly more than the average person. But I do feel like, maybe we should all figure out how to slow down, or at least not tear toward the worst impacts of climate change faster. Now read the rest of The Spark Related reading We named sustainable aviation fuel as one of our 10 Breakthrough Technologies this year. The world of alternative fuels can be complicated. Heres everything you need to know about the wide range of SAFs. Rerouting planes could help reduce contrailsand aviations climate impacts. Read more in this story from James Temple. SARAH ROGERS / MITTR | PHOTO GETTY Another thing DeepSeek has crashed onto the scene, upending established ideas about the AI industry. One common claim is that the companys model could drastically reduce the energy needed for AI. But the story is more complicated than that, as my colleague James ODonnell covered in this sharp analysis. Keeping up with climate Donald Trump announced a 10% tariff on goods from China. Plans for tariffs on Mexico and Canada were announced, then quickly paused, this week as well. Heres more on what it could mean for folks in the US. (NPR) China quickly hit back with mineral export curbs on materials including tellurium, a key ingredient in some alternative solar panels. (Mining.com) If the tariffs on Mexico and Canada go into effect, theyd hit supply chains for the auto industry, hard. (Heatmap News)Researchers are scrambling to archive publicly available data from agencies like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The Trump administration has directed federal agencies to remove references to climate change. (Inside Climate News) As of Wednesday morning, it appears that live data that tracks carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is no longer accessible on NOAAs website. (Try for yourself here)Staffers with Elon Musks department of government efficiency entered the NOAA offices on Wednesday morning, inciting concerns about plans for the agency. (The Guardian) The National Science Foundation, one of the USs leading funders of science and engineering research, is reportedly planning to lay off between 25% and 50% of its staff. (Politico) Our roads arent built for the conditions being driven by climate change. Warming temperatures and changing weather patterns are hammering roads, driving up maintenance costs. (Bloomberg) Researchers created a new strain of rice that produces much less methane when grown in flooded fields. The variant was made with traditional crossbreeding. (New Scientist) Oat milk maker Oatly is trying to ditch fossil fuels in its production process with industrial heat pumps and other electrified technology. But getting away from gas in food and beverage production isnt easy. (Canary Media) A new 3D study of the Greenland Ice Sheet reveals that crevasses are expanding faster than previously thought. (Inside Climate News) In other ice news, an Arctic geoengineering project shut down over concerns for wildlife. The nonprofit project was experimenting with using glass beads to slow melting, but results showed it was a threat to food chains. (New Scientist)

  • Decision to demolish Grenfell Tower would put disaster out of sight and out of mind, says survivor
    www.bdonline.co.uk
Angela Rayner said work to demolish the remains of the tower would start in JuneA survivor of the Grenfell Tower fire has said the governments decision to demolish the remains of the building would put the tragedy out of sight and out of mind for those responsible.Deputy prime minister Angela Rayner told a group of bereaved and survivors yesterday that work to take the 24-storey block down to ground level would start this June to make way for a permanent memorial. But the decision has been met with anger from some members of the Grenfell Community, who said their views had been ignored.Emma OConnor, who lived on the 20th floor of the west London tower, said its upper floors, which have been declared structurally unsafe by engineers, should be demolished but rebuilt as a memorial.> Also read:Grenfell Tower: what happens next will define how we rememberShe told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme: To me, it just seems like if its out of sight, its definitely out of mind for the people that are actually responsible for the lack of respect to human beings.OConnor added that government officials in the meeting did not give full answers to questions and would not say whether the decision to dismantle the tower was reversible.Grenfell United, a group which represents the families of victims, said that Rayner had refused to confirm how many bereaved and survivors had been spoken to during a four-week consultation carried out ahead of yesterdays meeting.Todays meeting showed just how upset bereaved and survivors are about not having their views heard or considered in this decision, the group said.> Also read:Construction sleepwalking to repeat of Grenfell due to culture of silence, says industry organisationIgnoring the voices of bereaved on the future of our loved ones gravesite is disgraceful and unforgivable. The government is expected to make a formal announcement on the decision tomorrow. The shell of the building is still covered in the protective wrapping which was installed two months after the fire which ripped through the tower in June 2017, killing 72 people in what was the UKs deadliest residential fire since the Second World War.The tower pictured in the weeks after the fire, before it was covered in a protective wrappingThe final report of a public inquiry into the disaster published last September found the combustible cladding on the building which allowed the fire to rapidly spread to upper storeys was the result of systematic dishonesty from those who manufactured and marketed the materials.Inquiry chairman Martin Moore-Bick concluded that the disaster was avoidable and caused in most cases through incompetence but, in some cases, through dishonesty and greed.Rayners decision comes three years after plans by former communities secretary Robert Jenrick to demolish the building were shelved by his successor Michael Gove following an outcry from bereaved families. An international design competition to design a memorial to the victims of the fire was launched last July, with a winner due to be announced this spring.> Also read:RIBA names five teams on shortlist to design Grenfell Tower memorialThe government has set aside a site of just under 3,000sq m for the memorial, which includes the ground on which the tower block stands in North Kensington and adjacent land on either side. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has been contacted for comment.

  • Bloodborne PSX demake now completely removed, but Nightmare Kart continues with DLC
    www.eurogamer.net
Bloodborne PSX demake now completely removed, but Nightmare Kart continues with DLCIs remake news afoot?Image credit: Lilith Walther News by Ed Nightingale Deputy News Editor Published on Feb. 6, 2025 Nightmare Kart is set to receive an expansion, despite a DMCA takedown from Sony against the developer's Bloodborne PSX demake.Originally known as Bloodborne Kart, the racer is a spin-off from the Bloodborne PSX demake from fan developer Lilith Walther. The name was changed to Nightmare Kart once Sony got involved and requested Walther "scrub the branding" from the game.Earlier this week, a legal takedown was issued by MarkScan Enforcement against a YouTube video of Walther's Bloodborne PSX demake. Now the full game itself has been removed from itch.io with a notice from the same company.Nightmare Kart Expansion DLC: The Old KartsWatch on YouTubeMarkScan represents Sony Interactive Entertainment, with the notice claiming copyright infringement."No person is entitled to upload, stream (live, delayed, repeat etc.), make available for download, broadcast and/or communicate to the public, the copyright content listed above, in any manner whatsoever, through any transmission platform, including the internet, for viewing on devices such as computers, laptops, mobile phones, tablet computers, etc. without express authorization from our client," the notice reads. As reported earlier this week, another fan project from modder Lance McDonald has also been hit by a claim, which enabled Bloodborne to run at 60fps.McDonald shared a social media post from Walther confirming both projects had been hit by DMCA takedown requests. Walther's post has since been removed.Eurogamer has asked Sony for comment, but has not yet received a response. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. It seems, therefore, that Sony is gradually targeting all Bloodborne fan projects. But why? Hope has, of course, turned to a possible official remake, though Sony or FromSoftware are yet to announce anything. In the meantime, Nightmare Kart is still available for free. It released in June last year, and its suitably named DLC The Old Karts will add in a new mini campaign, as well as new racers, karts, tracks, and power ups.Bloodborne DLC The Old Hunters introduced Lady Maria, who's already paralleled in Nightmare Kart as Mistress Mary. Perhaps we'll get an Orphan of Kos equivalent?Former PlayStation exec Shuhei Yoshida reckons Bloodborne creator Hidetaka Miyazaki is "so busy" a remake hasn't been possible."Miyazaki-san really, really loved Bloodborne, what he created. So I think he is interested but he's so successful and he's so busy, so he cannot do it himself, and he doesn't want anyone else to touch it," said Yoshida.Last year, Miyazaki told Eurogamer he's "very happy" to see so many passionate fans calling for a Bloodborne remake."Put simply, it makes me very happy to see it's a title with a lot of specific memories, both for me and the staff who worked on it," he said. "And when we see those passionate voices in the community, of course it makes us feel thrilled, it makes us feel very fortunate to have that and to have those memories."
