• Trump’s Guantnamo plan is an old idea with an ugly history
    www.vox.com
President Donald Trump is looking to vastly expand immigrant detention in Guantnamo Bay, Cuba.Trump hopes to eventually detain up to 30,000 immigrants at Guantnamo, which would require a massive investment in infrastructure, given that existing immigrant detention facilities are only designed to hold about 120 people. The Trump administration has already sent a few dozen immigrants those deemed high-risk to Guantnamo. That includes 13 known members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, which the federal government designated last year as a transnational criminal organization.Trumps team is reportedly planning to ramp up to at least one military flight carrying detainees per day, and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visited Guantnamo on Friday to survey the site. However, those plans might face roadblocks in the courts: On Sunday, a federal judge prevented the Trump administration from sending three Venezuelan immigrants accused of gang ties to Guantnamo.Under Trumps plans, most immigrants will not be held at the notorious terror suspects prison. Instead, theyll be put in immigration detention facilities nearby. But those facilities have their own sordid history, and critics argue that Trumps plan will violate immigrants human rights. And while the Trump administration has tried to wave away those concerns, history is on the critics side. Both Republican and Democratic administrations have a record of detaining and mistreating immigrants at Guantnamo, mostly Cubans and Haitians traveling in boats intercepted at sea. The most egregious abuses occurred in the early 1990s amid a refugee crisis in which the US kept Haitians in inhumane conditions at Guantnamo rather than allow them to reach American shores.Trump is trying something new: He is now planning to send people arrested in the US to the American naval base on a large scale. But just as in the 1990s, his plans raise concerns about inhumane detention conditions, especially given his first administrations lack of oversight even in US facilities on the mainland.Sending immigrants from the U.S. to Guantnamo and holding them incommunicado without access to counsel or the outside world opens a new shameful chapter in the history of this notorious prison, Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the Immigrants Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement Friday. The history of immigration detention at GuantnamoTrumps Guantnamo efforts resemble dark episodes in the countrys past. During the 1990s, Haitians were detained there by the thousands in horrific conditions with little oversight. Guantnamos remote location, outside the bounds of the mainland US or Cuban jurisdiction, has long shielded US operations there from public scrutiny. Out of sight, out of mind, is kind of the whole intention with Guantnamo, said Setareh Ghandehari, advocacy director for Detention Watch Network, a coalition of immigrant advocates focused on immigration detention. The Reagan administration began the practice of interdicting boats of Haitians. The Haitians were fleeing the repressive regimes of Franois Duvalier and his son, but Reagans team denied them political asylum and sent them back to the oppressive regime. But it wasnt until 1991 when Haitis democratically elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was deposed in a military coup and his supporters brutally hunted down that the US began detaining Haitian emigrants in large numbers at Guantnamo. Blocked by the courts from resuming automatic repatriations of Haitians who would face certain danger back home, US President George H.W. Bush established a refugee camp at the naval base. At its peak, more than 12,000 Haitians were held there. The conditions were like hell and detainees were treated like animals, as one witness recounts in Jonathan Hansens Guantnamo: An American History. They were served food that had maggots in it and sometimes made to sleep on the ground, the book says. The latrines were brimming over. There was never any cool water to drink, to wet our lips. There was only water in a cistern, boiling in the hot sun. When you drank it, it gave you diarrhea. Rats crawled over us at night. When we saw all these things, we thought, its not possible, it cant go on like this. Were humans, just like everybody else, said one detainee Hansen cites. The US government denied the emigrants access to legal counsel on the basis that Guantnamo was outside American constitutional jurisdiction. And despite court rulings, the Bush administration still sought to repatriate Haitians who did not qualify for asylum. They faced an almost impossibly high bar to qualify, in part because American officials downplayed the crisis in Haiti. The officials argued that they were not returning Haitians to life-threatening conditions, which is prohibited by US and international asylum law.Several hundred Haitian detainees at Guantnamo who had tested positive for HIV were also denied adequate medical care and isolated in separate spaces, cordoned off with barbed wire. Congress in 1987 had voted to bar HIV-positive individuals from entering the US. So even though many such Haitians had qualified for asylum, they were told that they would have to remain at Guantnamo for 10 to 20 years until a cure for AIDS was found.President Bill Clinton was elected in 1992 on the promise that he would end Haitian repatriations and detentions, but instead, his administration continued the Bush-era policies. Eventually, in 1993, a US federal court ruled that the detention of HIV-positive Haitian asylees was unconstitutional. It was only after the ruling that the Clinton administration changed its policies, and the Guantnamo detention camps were mostly cleared out. Will this dark history repeat during Trumps administration? The US risks reliving past abuses at Guantnamo under Trump. The president has offered little assurance that his plans to revive Guantnamo as a site for large-scale immigration detention will meet humane standards. More than a dozen organizations, including the ACLU, signed a letter to the Trump administration Friday demanding access to detainees there. Immigration attorneys for the three Venezuelans subject to Sundays federal court ruling have also argued that the mere uncertainty the government has created surrounding the availability of legal process and counsel access at Guantnamo is enough to justify blocking further transfers.Theres a very long, documented, clear history of how abusive detention conditions are across facilities, wherever they are, said Ghandehari, the immigrant advocate. It does take things to another level to be somewhere like Guantnamo, thats so far away, thats a military base, that has a really sordid history of being a site of abuse and torture. But its not just the history of immigration detention at Guantnamo that should raise concerns about Trumps efforts to expand capacity there. Trumps first term offers plenty of warning signs.During Trumps first term, the administration routinely failed to respond to abuses in mainland US immigration detention facilities unless pressured by the public or the courts. On Trumps watch, a rogue doctor gave detained immigrant women medically unnecessary hysterectomies without their consent. Immigrants were kept in freezing cold US Customs and Border Protection cells known as hieleras with only mylar blankets to keep them warm. Children were separated from their parents, in some cases permanently, and kept in cages. Immigrants were deprived of basic hygiene products and provided with spoiled food. Immigration detention guards were accused of sexually assaulting and harassing detainees at one facility in Texas on a systemic basis. In most of those cases, the administration only intervened following widespread public outcry or a court order. The problem is that its much harder to have a window into conditions at Guantnamo than it was for any of those facilities exposed during the first Trump administration. Thats a key concern for immigrant advocates, who already struggle to deliver adequate access to counsel and oversight at mainland facilities, said Faisal Al-Juburi, a spokesperson for the immigrant legal defense organization RAICES.Trump has also recently fired a slew of inspectors general, including one at the Department of Health and Human Services, who is in part responsible for overseeing detention conditions along with one at DHS. It is unlawful for our government to use Guantnamo as a legal black hole, yet that is exactly what the Trump administration is doing, Gelernt said.See More:

  • EA Sports FC 25 will reintroduce Diego Maradona three years after legal dispute
    metro.co.uk
Who here is thrilled to see him return? (EA)The late Diego Maradona will soon be added to EA Sports FC 25, nearly three years after he was removed from FIFA 22.Back in 2022, EA suddenly and unexpectedly removed Argentinian player and manager Diego Maradona from that years football game, FIFA 22.At the time, all EA said was this was due to a third-party legal dispute, though it was believed EA had failed to properly secure the rights to the late Maradonas likeness.EA expressed hope that it would be able to reintroduce Maradona back to the game. Its been nearly three years since then and after three sequels and a rebranding to EA Sports FC, Maradona is officially set to make a comeback. When is Diego Maradona being added to EA Sports FC 25?According to a post shared to the EA Sports FC 25 X account, Diego Maradona will be added to the game this week on February 14.EA hasnt provided any further specifics though, only posting an image of Maradona alongside the EA Sports FC 25 logo and a date to announce his return. At the very least, Maradona should be made available in EA Sports FC 25s Ultimate Team Mode, allowing players to recruit him for their squad. In FIFA 22, he boasted extremely high stats so hell no doubt be heavily sought after upon his return. As a reminder, EA thought it did have permission to use Maradonas likeness from his former manager, but it turned out said manager never held the rights. To make things extra confusing, there was a separate legal battle going on between two other parties Maradonas lawyer and Maradonas heirs over who actually held the likeness rights following Maradonas death in 2020.More TrendingPer a report by The Associated Press, a company owned by Maradonas lawyer named Sattvica tried to claim ownership of the Maradona trademark, but an attempt at a transferal was cancelled by Maradonas heirs and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), which said the company hadnt provided sufficient documentation.Sattvica tried to get around this by appealing to the General Court of the European Union but, in November 2023, said court rejected the appeal and sided with the EUIPO, saying, The documents submitted in support of the request for registration of the transfer do not justify an assignment of the trademark to that company.Presumably, this means EA has been negotiating with Maradonas heirs to resecure the likeness rights though the company is unlikely to go into the nitty gritty of the matter. While this is some good news for EA and fans, Maradonas return is unlikely to be an instant fix for EAs current financial woes. The company recently admitted that EA Sports FC 25 hasnt been performing as well as hoped though EA CEO Andrew Wilson is confident things will pick up later in the year. EA Sports FC 25 was the best selling game ever in the UK last year (EA)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.GameCentralSign up for exclusive analysis, latest releases, and bonus community content. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. • kami creator tells fans to avoid Wii version ahead of sequel
    metro.co.uk
Go for the HD version, says Hideki Kamiya (Capcom)The director behind kami has expressed his dislike for one version of the game, as he continues work on the follow-up.Developer Hideki Kamiya is known for directing some of the best games ever, between his work at Capcom like Resident Evil 2 and Bayonetta at PlatinumGames. One of his most beloved titles is kami, which he directed under Capcoms Clover Studio. The action-adventure game was originally released on the PlayStation 2 in 2006 (and 2007 in Europe), but was later ported to the Wii by another studio, Ready At Dawn, in 2008.While the Wii version arguably had superior controls, with the motion controls allowing you to draw with the celestial brush, Kamiya has told players to play the other versions instead. In response to a fan who asked if they should play the Wii version over PC, Kamiya replied: The Wii version is not the original. I made the PlayStation 2 version. If youre going to play it now, the best version is the HD version. Personally, I dont want you to play the Wii version. While he doesnt give an explicit reason for his preference, kami on Wii has a troubled history. The creative director on the port, Ru Weerasuriya, previously described its development as a technical challenge.https://twitter.com/HidekiKamiya_X/status/1885827363419894090We started with no assets and literally reverse-engineered the whole thing back onto Wii, he told VG247. It was not your typical port, but it was fun.Kamiyas distaste for the Wii version might be because it doesnt feature the original credits created by Clover due to legal constraints, something which he expressed back in 2008.More TrendingIm not disappointed because my name was removed from the game, Kamiya wrote (via Eurogamer) at the time. Of course, we all have pride in our work; we all want to stand up and say, I made this. Yet more importantly, I find it extremely regrettable that the [thoughts, emotions and messages] that went into the staff roll are gone from the game as well.Another ding against the Wii version is its box art, which was found to have an IGN watermark on it shortly after release.Kamiya is working on a sequel to kami at his new studio Clovers, alongside some of his former PlatinumGames colleagues. Little is known about the sequel, but Capcom has warned itll be a few years away yet. This isnt the first kami sequel though, with a spiritual successor, titled kamiden, being released for the Nintendo DS in 2010. • Trump Tells U.S. Treasury to Stop Making Wasteful Pennies
    gizmodo.com
By Matt Novak Published February 10, 2025 | Comments (0) | Photo by Jabin Botsford/The Washington Post via Getty Images Donald Trump announced over the weekend that the U.S. would stop minting pennies. And it might be the first good thing the fascist president has done since taking office. For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful! Trump wrote on Truth Social. I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies. Lets rip the waste out of our great nations budget, even if its a penny at a time. The cost of minting a penny has long been higher than the face value of the coin, but the price has gotten even higher in recent years. Creating a penny cost 2.7 cents in 2022 but skyrocketed to 3.7 cents in 2024, according to the Wall Street Journal. Supporters of getting rid of the penny point to other countries that have done the same with success. Canada got rid of the penny in 2012, while Australia ditched the 1-cent piece in the 1990s. The last time the U.S. stopped minting a coin was the half-cent piece in 1857. Adjusted for inflation, the half-cent was worth roughly 18 cents in todays currency when it was abolished in the mid-19th century. Back in 2014, Gizmodo wrote about this little fun fact when the price of the half-cent from 1857 was worth about a dime. Defenders of the penny argue that it would be too difficult for merchants to round payments up or down to the nearest 5 cents, but other countries do that just fine. And when the U.S. got rid of the half-penny people no doubt felt the same.Another thing the U.S. could do to save money is ditch the $1 bill, which has a much shorter lifespan than a $1 coin. The U.S. has a $1 coin that has never been widely adopted, thanks in large part to the existence of the $1 bill. Canada ditched its $1 bill, which led to widespread adoption of the $1 coin. And if the U.S. wants to actually see its people use the coin, itll need to stop making $1 bills. The U.S. could also change the materials in its currency since the country is stuck in the 20th century with bills made of cotton and linen. Countries like Britain, Australia, and Canada have adopted polymer-based currencies that are able to circulate for much longer without getting torn to shreds and needing to be replaced.Getting rid of the penny just makes sense at this point and its good that Trump wants to abolish it. But just about everything else the president is currently doing could be easily classified as bad or just plain evil. Trump has tried to abolish both USAID and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau while allowing Elon Musk and his rogue band of 20-something dipshits to ransack federal agencies for highly sensitive data. Musk is reportedly setting his sights on Social Security and the Pentagon next. And while the courts have officially put a pause on many of Trumps extreme actions, theres no indication yet that a court order is going to stop Musk from just doing whatever he wants. Meanwhile, the Democrats are fighting back with a lot of tough words but very little action. And some Democratic leaders arent even bothering with tough words, instead insisting they have no real power. What leverage do we have? Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a viral video clip over the weekend. They control the House, the Senate, and the presidency. Its their government.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By James Whitbrook Published February 10, 2025 Allison Stanger, The Conversation Published February 10, 2025 By Lucas Ropek Published February 7, 2025 By Matt Novak Published February 7, 2025 By AJ Dellinger Published February 7, 2025 By Matt Novak Published February 7, 2025

  • Heres How One OEM Is Fighting Against Nvidia RTX 5090 Scalpers
    gizmodo.com
Scalpers have a stranglehold on online orders, and theNvidia GeForce RTX 5090andRTX 5080 GPUswere only the latest victims of money-grubbing resellers. Nvidias high-end graphics cards had such limited supply and enormous demand that leeches started sellingsome cards for three orfour times the price of the $2,000 5090. One OEM has a novel solution to the scalper problem. Rather than dropping more stock on digital storefronts, its selling its cards through a direct-to-consumer raffle. Those who join the U.S. Discord for Zotac and show that they are human by posting and engaging can enter the companys raffle to buy the RTX 5080 or 5090 at MSRP.Videocardz first caught onto the scheme, whichdespite its casino natureseems much fairer to buyers than trawling through eBay looking for a second-hand GPU. Screenshot: Zotac / Discord Screenshot: Zotac / Discord Starting Feb. 7, the company has offered giveaways (though we should note its not a giveaway if you still have to buy it) for RTX 5080 and 5090 cards at regular intervals. Participants have around two hours to put their names in the hat. These drops occur on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT or 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. ET. One of Zotacs community moderators clarified on Discord that It is completely RNG-based. This is an opportunity to win to PURCHASE the card; this is NOT for a free graphics card. In its announcement post, Zotac explained that participants must be server members and actively engage in challenges, discussions, and community activities. Spam low-effort messages will not count. Theres only one card per household. Even better, Zotac said it keeps track of serial numbers if somebody tries to resell the card immediately for a premium. Anybody who wins the raffle wont know how much the card will cost until Zotac reaches out to them. The OEM has promoted its three-fan config $2,200 GeForce RTX 5090 SOLID, SOLID OC, and 5090 AMP Extreme INFINITY on its site. Those cards are currently out of stock from popular websites like Newegg. Zotac is a smaller OEM than competitors like Gigabyte or Asus, and it only receives half a dozen or fewer cards for sale at a time. The situation is so ridiculous that some consumers prefer an RTX 50-series raffle to the current stock situation. Before launch, Nvidia told buyers there wouldnt be enough GPUs to meet demand. Nvidia previously told Gizmodo its still expecting to launch the RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti sometime this month, though the company has yet to provide a more specific release date. As noted by VideoCardz, French retailer topAchat listed RTX 5070 availability as Feb. 20. Either way, we may not have to wait long to learn if the mid-range Nvidia GPUs will have as limited stock as the $1,000+ graphics cards.

In the heart of Riga, five monumental pavilions stand as a testament to architectural reinvention. Riga Central Market, built in 1930, is designed circularly, repurposing the metal structures of former German Zeppelin hangars from World War I. Today, it is Europe's largest market, situated within the UNESCO-listed historic center of Riga. Within the Meat Pavilion, onlyonly studio has introduced a new architectural intervention, adding a contemporary layer to this story of transformation.Save this picture! The degustation zone stands as a luminous volume inside Meat Market Pavilion, beneath its historic exposed trusses. Translucent metallic curtains envelop the space, creating a flexible boundary that can be configured to suit various events and group sizes of up to 50 people. Light filtering through the translucent metallic curtains creates an ethereal atmosphere, turning the degustation area into a glowing focal point within the market hall. Following New European Bauhaus principles of sustainability and cultural inclusion, the design thoughtfully integrates with existing market elements while creating new possibilities for cultural exchange. The adaptable curtain system allows the space to shift between public and private configurations, serving both traditional market functions and contemporary needs for culinary tourism and cultural programming.Save this picture!Through this intervention, onlyonly studio demonstrates how sensitive architectural additions can create new cultural destinations within historic structures, enriching the market's role as a meeting point between local traditions and contemporary urban life.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeMaterialsSteelFabricMaterials and TagsPublished on February 10, 2025Cite: "Pavilion Within / Onlyonly Studio" 10 Feb 2025.
