  • Data Science in Mental Health: How We Integrated Dunns Model of Wellness in Mental Health Diagnosis Through Social Media Data

LatestMachine LearningData Science in Mental Health: How We Integrated Dunns Model of Wellness in Mental Health Diagnosis Through Social Media Data 0 like February 10, 2025Share this postAuthor(s): MSVPJ Sathvik Originally published on Towards AI. The World Health Organization suggests that about one in four people in todays world experience mental health conditions at some point in their lives, which are not only confined to emotional well-being but also physical, social, and cognitive abilities.Counselling session by a therapistIn our work on medical diagnosis, we have focused on identifying conditions such as depression and anxiety for suicide risk detection using large language models (LLMs). Our previous approach considered additional factors associated with mental illnesses, such as Perceived Burdensomeness (PBu) and Thwarted Belongingness (TBe).But later on, we realized that the overall parameters of a persons well-being would provide a broader view, which can be critical for early detection and medication rather than just focusing on a diagnosis, like particular mental health issues. For this, we have worked on the MULTIWD dataset that identifies the wellness indicators in social media posts. We crafted it to support a multi-dimensional analysis beyond the traditional categories determining mental health issues. Our MULTIWD dataset has been a fantastic resource in helping detect multiple wellness dimensions in Reddit posts. This dataset represents a valuable tool for mental health research, letting researchers perform fine-detailed multi-label classification tasks for analyzing mental well-being in real-world social media contexts. What are wellness dimensions?Considering its structure, we have taken Halbert L. Dunns wellness model as a base for our MULTIWD dataset.Dunns model categorizes wellness into six dimensions:Physical: Often impacted by lifestyle and medical conditions related to ones bodyEmotional: Emotional stability, resilience, and mental strengthSocial: Social interactions, relationships, and social networksIntellectual: Creative thinking, Active learning, and cognitive abilitiesSpiritual: Meaning to ones life, the purpose of the soulOccupational(Vocational): Work-life balance, job satisfactionFocusing on Reddit posts, the MULTIWD dataset annotates these posts with the above wellness dimensions, providing greater scope for analysis of mental health issues. The MULTIWD Dataset: Structure and PurposeHow did we collect the data?We have collected data from two particular subreddits: /depression and /SuicideWatch,Going anonymous for self-expression has bundled these forums with information that is quite useful for mental health studies. We have carefully curated3,200 postsHow did we build our model on the base of Dunns model?Labeling the wellness dimensions requires a clear understanding of social and psychological factors; we have invited an expert panel, including a clinical psychologist, rehabilitation counselor, and social NLP researcher. This panel has designed the guidelines for annotating the wellness dimensions and categorized the posts into the six wellness dimensions based on the sensitive content of each post. They have established clear criteria with many examples and allowed their well-trained student annotators to classify each post meticulously. What does the dataset provide? In conclusion, it has been observed that the posts in the dataset ranged from brief messages to detailed personal anecdotes with a maximum post length of 300 words. A clear distinction of imbalance has been made among the six dimensions, with the higher representation of the Social, Emotional, and physical aspects. We summed up from this that the skew indicates that the users often share more information about their social connections, physical health issues, and emotions than their vocational and spiritual experiences on these forums.Data science for mental healthData Analysis Techniques in MULTIWDWe have used machine learning and data science techniques to explore the wellness dimensions in rich and unstructured crude text. The techniques we used for in-depth analysis were:Multi-Label ClassificationThe first step to proceed with our MULTIWD was Multi-Label Classification. Each Reddit post can relate to multiple wellness dimensions, which made it essential to use models that can assign various labels. After a detailed evaluation of traditional classifiers and transformer-based models like BERT and GPT-3, MentalBERT and BERT became the best-performing models, achieving a fantastic F1 score of over 76%. This indicates that they can accurately portray the complexity of multiple dimensions in social media language.Handling Imbalanced DataTo address the class imbalance in our MULTIWD dataset, with notably fewer instances for Spiritual and Vocational aspects, we have used data augmentation techniques that can help generate synthetic data for the classes on a different level than others. This would help balance the training set and improve the models performance.Additionally, we have used specialized evaluation metrics such as the Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC) to gauge the models performance beyond accuracy, providing an improved measure that accounts for false positives and negatives.Semantic and Contextual AnalysisWe found dealing with semantics, vocabulary, and context quite challenging since social media posts contain ambiguous language, metaphors, or slang, complicating analysis. Per se, the word head can refer to either physical pain or mental distress, depending on context. We realized wed need advanced natural language understanding and attention mechanisms to differentiate the meanings. Using BERT and MentalBERT, we could capture these subtleties effectively by contextualizing each word based on the surrounding text. This helped us make it well-suited for the intricacies of wellness dimension identification.Experimental results for fine-grained performance evaluation and aspect-based analysis through existing classifiersPractical Implications of the MULTIWD DatasetThe MULTIWD dataset presents many applications for monitoring mental health, longitudinal studies, and interventions. Further, researchers have a great scope to identify individual mental health trends by analyzing wellness dimensions over time, providing good insights into social-emotional and physical factors contributing to ones mental well-being.Expanding this dataset, we have observed some suitable applications:Early mental health crisis detection: The posts indicating significant signs and changes in the emotional and social well-being of individuals who are clearly at risk of mental health issues serve as early warning signs, allowing for timely interventions.Longitudinal Analysis: This dataset is entirely compatible with studies that assess wellness changes over time. Researchers can develop models that track well-being patterns by mapping the dimensions to different users previous posts. This would greatly support the mental health practitioners who are monitoring at-risk individuals.Informing Public Health Initiatives: If a specific wellness dimension is persistently associated with high distress and anxiety, targeted initiatives can address these issues. Analysis of this dataset can also guide the design of the policies that might highlight common mental health issues the users face. Conclusion: The pathway to draw better insights from mental health data using data scienceThe MULTIWD dataset has significantly contributed to mental health research and still has a broad scope for application in the same field. By shifting the focus from individual diseases or disorders, blending the wellness dimension parameters into this helped us and other researchers to analyze the social media data to reflect the complexities of mental well-being. On taking this forward by refining the dataset, adding more balanced wellness dimensions can yield better insights into how wellness changes over time and how data science and analysis can contribute to meaningful mental health diagnosis.Citation: MSVPJ SATHVIK , Muskan Garg . • Why Are the Thunderbolts* Called That, and Did Marvel Just Explain the Asterisk in the Title?
    www.ign.com
The asterisk in the title of Marvels upcoming Thunderbolts* has had fans puzzled since it was first revealed as part of the films marketing. What is the asterisk hinting at? Is Thunderbolts not really the name of this team? Are they the new Avengers? (Or the New Avengers, to be more comics accurate?) Even the trailers have had fun with the moniker of the super-team, with David Harbours Red Guardian declaring We are the Thunderbolts! even while his teammates seem to hate the idea. But timed to the recent Super Bowl trailer came a tweet from Marvel Studios Japan featuring an international Thunderbolts* poster which seems to give away the meaning of the asterisk:*The Avengers are not available it reads.Look closely...This also ties into Julia Louis-Dreyfus characters line at the start of the trailer: Lets talk facts, she says, seemingly in front of some kind of Congressional hearing. The Avengers are not coming. Who will keep the American people safe? If the Avengers are not available, it sounds like its time for the Thunderbolts and their asterisk.Assuming that poster has spilled the beans on the Big Asterisk Mystery, this solution pretty much makes sense. Marvel is clearly positioning its marketing of the movie so that the Thunderbolts* are seen as a more humorous variation on a superhero team (nevermind that theyre mostly made up of former assassins and killers), and so the gimmick of the asterisk is just one aspect of that approach.*The Avengers are not availableThat said, there has been reason to think maybe there would be more to the name than just playing it for laughs. Thunderbolts* is the film that is next up after Captain America: Brave New World, where Harrison Ford takes on the role of Thaddeus Thunderbolt Ross (formerly played by the late William Hurt). The former nemesis of the Hulk is now a Red Hulk himself according to the Brave New World trailers, and the comics version of the character has served as a member of the Thunderbolts in the past (there have been a bunch of rosters and variations on the team over the years). So one theory among fans has been that Ross will die in Brave New World, and that for some reason the team, which also includes Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Bob/the Sentry (Lewis Pullman), would take the former general/presidents name. But when you think about it, that notion doesnt seem to really fit with the tone of the movie Marvel is selling, does it?As for how the name came about in the comics, it was fairly random there too. Team member Citizen V (who was actually Baron Zemo in disguise, and who disappointingly does not appear to be in the movie) said they got the name from a line by 17th century poet Thomas Randolph: Justice, like lightning, ever should appear to few mens ruin, but to all mens fear. Adds Zemo: Our hope is that we can be that lightning -- that justice. (Of course this is all a ruse, since the original Thunderbolts were actually the bad guys known as the Masters of Evil, but you can read more about that in our Thunderbolts explainer.) Interestingly, apparently Randolph was erroneously credited with that line in the comic, and its a bit of a mystery where it actually originated. So maybe the asterisk doesnt mean all that much beyond being part of a cute joke. And if it does just boil down to the Avengers not being available, well then, that actually makes total sense in the context of the MCU. After all, we havent seen Earths Mightiest Heroes in quite some time

  • OpenAI expects to have its first custom AI chip by the end of the year
    9to5mac.com
As the industry embraces artificial intelligence, the need for chips ready for AI tasks has increased considerably in recent years. While Nvidia is currently the main supplier of AI chips, OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT) wants to have its first custom chip ready by the end of the year.OpenAI working on its own AI chipAs reported by Reuters on Monday, OpenAI has been pushing ahead with its plans to design and build its own AI-ready silicon by the end of this year. Sources familiar with the matter say the company is finalizing the design and plans to send it to manufacturing in the next few months. TSMC, which already supplies chips to Apple, is rumored to produce OpenAIs first chip. The report notes that tape-out, which is the final stage in the process of designing a new chip, costs tens of millions of dollars and can take up to six months before production begins. This is a critical stage as the first chips produced on a large scale could fail and this would require redoing the whole process. At first, the OpenAI chip would be used to run AI models with a limited role, but the chip also capable of training AI models and may be used for this purpose in the future. If all goes well, OpenAI engineers already have plans to develop even more powerful chips. If OpenAI succeeds in building its own chip, the company will not only have more control over how it processes data for AI training, but will also reduce its reliance on Nvidia. Apple, for instance, currently uses Amazon chips to pre-train Apple Intelligence models. However, the company is also rumored to be working on its first custom server chip for AI tasks in partnership with Broadcom.Other companies such as Meta and Microsoft have also been spending billions of dollars on AI infrastructure. At the same time, the latest AI model introduced by Chinese startup DeepSeek has shown the world that its possible to develop powerful AI models with fewer hardware resources.Photo byLaura OckelonUnsplash.Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • As Elon Musk Reviews Moon Program, Boeing Warns Workers Building Artemis Rocket of Mass Layoffs
    futurism.com
Aerospace giant Boeing is warning that hundreds of workers currently working on NASA's Artemis Moon rocket could be laid off in the upcoming months.A Boeing spokesperson told The Register that "to align with revisions to the Artemis program and cost expectations, we informed our Space Launch Systems team of the potential for approximately 400 fewer positions by April 2025."The notifications were intended to give workers a more than 60-day notice in advance of mass layoffs, to adhere to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (or WARN) Act."We are working with our customer and seeking opportunities to redeploy employees across our company to minimize job losses and retain our talented teammates," the statement reads. The Space Launch System (SLS), an expendable heavy-lift launch vehicle that's been in the works for well over a decade, has already experienced years of delays not to mention billions of dollars in budget overruns. Now that SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has become an integral part of the US government's operations, where he's actively looking for places to slash the budget with the help of his so-called Department of Government Efficiency, the rocket could soon land on the chopping block.Musk has already hinted at scrapping NASA's Moon program, tweeting in December that the "Moon is a distraction" and that "we're going straight to Mars" instead. At the time, Musk argued that the "Artemis architecture is extremely inefficient, as it is a jobs-maximizing program, not a results-maximizing program," in a separate tweet. "Something entirely new is needed."That's despite NASA still hoping to launch the rocket as part of its Artemis II and III missions in 2026 and 2027, respectively, culminating in the first human landing attempt on the Moon in over half a century.NASA released a statement over the weekend, reaffirming its commitment to the rocket as an "essential component" of its Artemis program."NASA and its industry partners continuously work together to evaluate and align budget, resources, contractor performance, and schedules to execute mission requirements efficiently, safely, and successfully in support of NASAs Moon to Mars goals and objectives," a spokesperson told Ars Technica's Eric Berger. "NASA defers to its industry contractors for more information regarding their workforces."The agency's upcoming Artemis launches are highly technical in nature and involve a laundry list of contractors, most notably Musk's SpaceX.As currently planned, Artemis III will make use of the firm's Starship, which will be used to lower astronauts down to the lunar surface.Whether the SLS will be swept up in the SpaceX CEO's efforts to slash massive swathes of the government's budget remains to be seen, but given the inherent conflict of interest, it's certainly a possibility.President Donald Trump also supports the idea of "launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars," according to his inauguration speech last month. However, the Trump administration has yet to comment on the fate of NASA's Artemis program, which was established during Trump's first presidency.Musk has also yet to reveal what he meant with his plans for "something entirely new," if there are any, to begin with.Given Boeing's latest fidgetiness, NASA's stalwart contractors are getting cold feet, and starting to wonder if Artemis will even exist by the end of the year. But as Berger writes, there "has been a healthy debate within the White House and senior leadership at NASA" about a "future of the SLS rocket and the Artemis Moon program."Besides, if the SLS were to be canceled or radically changed, it'd be a highly unpopular move in Congress, as SpaceNews points out.More on Artemis: Elon Musk Trying to Scrap NASA's Moon ProgramShare This Article

  • Allstate Says Almost All Its Communications About Insurance Claims Are Done With AI Now
    futurism.com
Insurance company Allstate has revealed that almost all of the communications its reps send out to claimants are now written by AI, the Wall Street Journal reports. It's a surprising revelation, highlighting the significant role generative AI will play and is already playing in our daily lives. In other words, there's a growing chance an AI will be denying your insurance claim in the near future, or that it already has.Allstate chief information officer Zulfi Jeevanjee told the WSJ that AI-generated emails tend to be less accusatory and jargony."When these emails used to go out, even though we had standards and so on, they would include a lot of insurance jargon," he said. "They werent very empathetic... Claims agents would get frustrated, and so it wasnt necessarily great communication."Of course, the tech Allstate is making use of, which is based on OpenAI's GPT large language models, is far from perfect."The claim agent still looks at them just to make sure theyre accurate, but theyre not writing them anymore," Jeevanjee told the WSJ.But it's nonetheless a sign of the times, underlining a race to automate communications.Allstate claims that it's not expecting any layoffs as a result. However, executives have long warned that lower-level employees, particularly in the world of customer service and even "midlevel engineers," may soon be out of a job due to the rise of AI.Despite Jeevanjee's reassurances that human staffers look over the output of an AI for accuracy, we've already seen the tech cause plenty of chaos. In the medical industry, for instance, "hallucinating" AI models have been shown to still make easily avoidable mistakes.Health insurance company UnitedHealthcare, whose CEO was gunned down late last year, is also facing a class action lawsuit over its use of AI to often wrongfully deny claims. In fact, UnitedHealthcare is only one of three insurance companies in the US facing class action lawsuits after algorithms denied potentially lifesaving care. Competitor Cigna was recently accused of denying more than 300,000 claims in just two months, spending ascant 1.2 seconds on average on each one.Whether Allstate has learned those lessons and studied the many limitations of the tech remains to be seen. While simultaneously advocating for replacing human communication with the output of an AI model, Jeevanjee argues that the tech will allow reps to better understand the needs of customers."If I think about the insurance industry in general, we havent really done a great job of being customer obsessed," he told the WSJ. "Thats really what Im trying to drive."More on AI and insurance: Murdered Insurance CEO Had Deployed an AI to Automatically Deny Benefits for Sick PeopleShare This Article
