• Apple Maps now uses Gulf of America name in US, will roll out globally soon
    9to5mac.com
Yesterday, Google Maps updated the Gulf of Mexicos name for US users to read Gulf of America instead. Now, it seems that Apple Maps is quickly following suit.Maps update follows executive order to change Gulf of Mexicos nameOne of the first executive orders signed by President Trump at the start of his second term involved renaming the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America instead. This week, that change has officially been implemented by government officials and filed in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).Apple Maps has now been updated for US users to reflect the change. While currently, the actual map still reads Gulf of Mexico, if you tap to view location details, the app now shows Gulf of America as the name instead. As an overseas user, why do I have to see changes mandated by a president that only applied to a certain country? It's the same as the UK demanding personal encrypted data from ALL iCloud users around the world, not just the UK. View all commentsIt is expected that shortly, the name change will apply to the actual map itself too.The revised name only applies within the US for now, but Apple told Mark Gurman at Bloomberg it would soon roll out the shift for all users globally.Apple and Google follow local geographic naming standards, such as the NGIS, so its not particularly surprising that the change has been made. But rolling it out globally is an interesting move considering Google intends to retain the Gulf of Mexico label in all non-US countries.Well keep you posted on any new developments to this story.Best iPhone accessoriesAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • Microplastics Getting Stuck in Brain Vessels Like Clots, Scientists Find, Causing "Neurological Abnormalities" in Mice
    futurism.com
Image by Getty / FuturismDevelopmentsFor the first time, scientists have used real-time imaging to track tiny pieces of microplastics as they moved through the brain blood vessels of mice.As detailed in a recent paperpublished in the journal Science Advances, first spotted by The Guardian, the project made an alarming discovery: some of the pieces of plastic were becoming stuck, causing more chunks to accumulate behind them in what one of the researchers likened to a "car crash."In experiments, the international team of scientists found that mice that were exposed to microplastic experienced decreased motor function, hinting at the possibility that accumulating plastic may be having negative effects on the brain, including "neurological abnormalities.""This revelation offers a lens through which to comprehend the toxicological implications of microplastics that invade the bloodstream," the paper reads. It's an alarming albeit preliminary warning sign that microplastics, which have pervaded practically every part of our environment and our bodies, could be detrimental to our neurological health. Scientists have found tiny pieces of plastic chemicals in human arteries, hearts, penises, semen, and lungs.Microplastics have previously been linked to reproductive health issues and cancer risk, among other issues. Now, given the latest study, the situation isn't looking great especially as concentrations of microplastics inside human bodies continues to rise. The paper's authors gave mice water that was laced with fluorescent-coated polystyrene, allowing them to use an imaging technique called "two-photon microscopy" to track how they moved into the mice's brains. When encountering tight bends within the organs' cortex vessels, the tiny pieces of polystyrene appear to have gotten absorbed by immune cells, creating unusually-shaped cells that then become stuck. Some of these blockages became unstuck by themselves over time. However, the finding that stuck pieces of microplastics can get lodged in the first place and reduce blood flowis concerning."Environment microplastics might be another important risk factor for cardiovascular disease and received scant attention so far," the researchers wrote. "Our findings provide a mechanistic explanation for tissue damage induced by microplastics, particularly regarding their effects on vascular obstruction.""This obstruction is likely to have detrimental consequences for cardiovascular health and may result in more severe adverse effects, especially in patients with underlying conditions similar to myocardial infarction," they concluded. But as the authors note, it's important to point out that we still don't know if the same blockages would take place in the human brain as well, as our vessels tend to be much larger."Moreover, humans are exposed to a variety of [microplastic]sizes, and the combinatorial effects of different [microplastic] sizes on the likelihood of inducing infarctions remain to be estimated," they wrote in their paper. "The use of larger mammals or animal models that more closely resemble the human circulatory system, such as nonhuman primates, is thus crucial for studying this process."More on microplastics: The Weight of All the Plastic in Your Brain May Make You QueasyShare This Article

  • Wave of Vandalism and Protests Hit Tesla
    futurism.com
Vox PopuliBeing the hatchetman for the Trump administration has made Elon Musk a more controversial figure than ever and the people are letting him know it: across the globe, protestors are vandalizing cars made by Tesla, Musk's automaker and his largest cash cow.One of the latest incidents occurred on Friday, when a Tesla dealership in Colorado was vandalized with spray paint, with red Xs defacing the windshields of vehicles like the Cybertruck. Police said that there was even an arson attempt, and have requested that the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives get involved. The phenomenon is also strikingly international, mirroring Tesla's plummeting global sales. Earlier this month, a Tesla showroom in the Hague was vandalized with anti-Nazi imagery and messages. A group of activists in Germany, meanwhile, projected the word "Heil" along with Musk's Nazi salute on the exterior of Tesla's Berlin gigafactory. Some of the acts of vandalism seem pretty spontaneous. But in other cases, Musk's detractors are getting organized. Demonstrations have sprung up across the US, rallying against what critics argue is Musk's unconstitutional gutting of federal agencies through his so-called Department of Government Efficiency.Over the weekend, well over 1,000 San Diegans marched against Musk and Trump, voicing cries that "Nazis have to go" the city's third such protest that week. The demonstration was primarily to rail against the Trump administration, but the anti-Musk sentiment was just as strong."The people will not bend down and let Elon Musk ravish the treasury and destroy regulations meant to protect the people," one protestor shouted through a megaphone, per The San Diego Tribune. And there's been no shortage of demonstrations specifically targeting the president's "First Buddy." On Saturday, over fifty people attended a protest outside a Tesla dealership in Southern California, with one protestor that Musk "is shredding our democracy."That same weekend, about thirty people crowded outside a Tesla showroom in Manhattan, organized by an activist group called Rise and Resist, there to protest Musk and Trump's "administrative coup.""We were upset with Musk taking over the government," one of the organizers .Incidents like these show that while Musk himself may seem impervious to the outcry considering he did two Nazi salutes and is still Trump's right-hand man his behavior and parroting of far-right politics can blow back on his businesses.Sales at Tesla have faltered in part due to the negativity surrounding Musk, who's inextricable from the automaker's image. Several countries, including Poland and Canada, have called for boycotting the automaker or targeting it with tariffs. A lot of Musk's personal fortune is tied up in Tesla stock, and so there may come a point when he starts to feel actual, material consequences. At any rate, we feel that now's a good time to invoke a favorite slogan of Musk: Vox Populi, Vox Dei. The people, it seems, have spoken.More on Elon Musk: Elon Musk Makes Huge Bid to Seize Control of OpenAIShare This Article

  • Chat With an Astronaut on the ISS Wednesday: How to Tune In
    www.cnet.com
Most of us will never get to go to space, but this week you'll at least have the chance to chat with someone who's up there right now. NASA has announced a first-of-its-kind Twitch stream where astronauts from the International Space Station will engage with viewers live on the platform. The stream is planned for Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 11:45 a.m. ET (8:45 a.m. PT) on NASA'sofficial Twitch channel. The event will feature NASA astronaut Don Pettit, who joined the ISS crew back in September as part of the Expedition 72 launch. Pettit is known to manyfor the amazing space photos he regularly posts on social media. He'll be joined by NASA astronaut Matt Dominick, who's currently on Earth after returning with Crew-8 in Octoberafter being delayed by Hurricane Milton. Dominick has also taken some showstopping pictures from the ISS.Read more: Astronaut Suni Williams Sets Record on Spacewalk Outside ISSThe two will hang out on Twitch chat and discuss things like daily life on the ISS and what it's like to conduct research in microgravity. They will also talk about how ordinary citizens can engage with NASA, including citizen science projects and programs across the STEM field."This Twitch event from space is the first of many," Brittany Brown, a communications director at NASA, said in a blog post. "We spoke with digital creators at TwitchCon about their desire for streams designed with their communities in mind, and we listened. In addition to our spacewalks, launches, and landings, we'll host more Twitch-exclusive streams like this one. Twitch is one of the many digital platforms we use to reach new audiences and get them excited about all things space."Where to watch the NASA Twitch stream Upgrade your inbox Get cnet insider From talking fridges to iPhones, our experts are here to help make the world a little less complicated. To watch the stream, simply head to NASA's Twitch channel at 11:45 a.m. ET on Feb. 12. The stream will act like any other Twitch stream where you can chat and watch, except this time it'll be with someone who is 250 miles above the Earth's surface.Twitch chats can be volatile on occasion, so hopefully, NASA packed enough moderators in case things get rowdy. Not NASA's first Twitch streamThis isn't NASA's first jaunt on the Amazon-owned Twitch from outside the confines of Earth's atmosphere. The agency has streamed space walks on Twitch and its own NASA+ platform in the past. However, this will be the first stream where people in the chat have a chance to engage with astronauts, ask questions and otherwise interact with people in space. Prior streams were mostly view-only.

  • Check Your Pantry for These Recalled Tuna Products
    www.cnet.com
Tri-Union Seafoods, a California-based seafood company, has recalled numerous canned tuna products due to a "manufacturing defect" in the easy-pull tab.The defect "may compromise the integrity of the product seal (especially over time), causing it to leak, or worse, be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, which can lead to a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, the company announced in an alert shared by the Food and Drug Administration.Clostridium botulinum is the bacteria that can cause botulism, a rare but possibly fatal illness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, botulism can cause "difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and even death" and is considered a medical emergency. The recalled products were sold under the brand names Genova, Van Camp's, H-E-B and Trader Joe's and were distributed in numerous states. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall at this time, according to the FDA announcement. If you have any of the recalled products in your home, you should not eat the tuna and dispose of the cans immediately.Below are all of the recalled products, Universal Product Codes that are located near the product's bar code and where the products were distributed. • Why Private Forecasting Companies Cant Replace the National Weather Service
    www.scientificamerican.com
February 11, 20255 min readWhy Private Forecasting Companies Cant Replace the National Weather ServiceNOAA and the NWS provide public weather data that private companies cannot recreateA senior hurricane specialist works at the NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida. Joe Raedle/Getty ImagesThe following essay is reprinted with permission from The Conversation, an online publication covering the latest research. When a hurricane or tornado starts to form, your local weather forecasters can quickly pull up maps tracking its movement and showing where its headed. But have you ever wondered where they get all that information? The forecasts can seem effortless, but behind the scenes, a vast network of satellites, airplanes, radar, computer models and weather analysts are providing access to the latest data and warnings when necessary. This data comes from analysts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, known as NOAA, and its National Weather Service. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today.Atmospheric scientists Christine Wiedinmyer and Kari Bowen, who is a former National Weather Service forecaster, explained NOAAs central role in most U.S. weather forecasts. When people see a weather report on TV, what went on at NOAA to make that forecast possible?A lot of the weather information Americans rely on starts with real-time data collected by NOAA satellites, airplanes, weather balloons, radar and maritime buoys, as well as weather stations around the world. All of that information goes into the agencys computers, which process the data to begin defining whats going on in different parts of the atmosphere.NOAA forecasters use computer models that simulate physics and the behavior of the atmosphere, along with their own experience and local knowledge, to start to paint a picture of the weather whats coming in a few minutes or hours or days. They also use that data to project seasonal conditions out over weeks or months. When severe weather is on the way, the agency issues the official alerts youll see in the news and on your phone. All of this analysis happens before the information reaches private weather apps and TV stations. No matter who you are, you can freely access that data and the analyses. In fact, a large number of private companies use NOAA data to create fancy maps and other weather products that they sell.It would be extremely difficult to do all of that without NOAA.The agency operates a fleet of 18 satellites that are packed with instruments dedicated to observing weather phenomena essential to predicting the weather, from how hot the land surface is to the water content of the atmosphere. Some are geostationary satellites which sit high above different parts of the U.S. measuring weather conditions 24/7. Others orbit the planet. Many of these are operated as part of partnerships with NASA or the Air Force. Some private companies are starting to invest in satellites, but it would take an enormous amount of money to replicate the range of instrumentation and coverage that NOAA has in place. Satellites only last so long and take time to build, so NOAA is continually planning for the future, and using its technical expertise to develop new instruments and computer algorithms to interpret the data.Maritime buoys are another measuring system that would be difficult to replicate. Over 1,300 buoys across oceans around the world measure water temperature, wind and wave height all of which are essential for coastal warnings, as well as long-term forecasts.Weather observation has been around a long time. President Ulysses S. Grant created the first national weather service in the War Department in 1870. It became a civilian service in 1880 under the Department of Agriculture and is now in the Commerce Department. The information its scientists and technologists produce is essential for safety and also benefits people and industries in a lot of ways.Could a private company create forecasts on its own without NOAA data?It would be difficult for one company to provide comprehensive weather data in a reliable way that is also accessible to the entire public. Some companies might be able to launch their own satellite, but one satellite only gives you part of the picture. NOAAs weather observation network has been around for a long time and collects data from points all over the U.S. and the oceans. Without that robust data, computer models and the broad network of forecasters and developers, forecasting also becomes less reliable.Analyzing that data is also complex. Youre not going to be able to take satellite data, run a model on a standard laptop and suddenly have a forecast. And theres a question of whether a private company would want to take on the legal risk of being responsible for the nations forecasts and severe weather warnings.NOAA is taxpayer-funded, so it is a public good its services provide safety and security for everyone, not just those who can pay for it.If weather data was only available at a price, one town might be able to afford the weather information necessary to protect its residents, while a smaller town or a rural area across the state might not. If youre in a tornado-prone area or coastal zone, that information can be the difference between life or death. Is climate data and research into the changing climate important for forecasts? The Earths systems its land, water and the atmosphere are changing, and we have to be able to assess how those changes will impact weather tomorrow, in two weeks and far into the future.Rising global temperatures affect weather patterns. Dryness can fuel wildfires. Forecasts have to take the changing climate into account to be accurate, no matter who is creating the forecast.Drought is an example. The dryness of the Earth controls how much water gets exchanged with the atmosphere to form clouds and rainfall. To have an accurate weather prediction, we need to know how dry things are at the surface and how that has changed over time. That requires long-term climate information.NOAA doesnt do all of this by itself who else is involved?NOAA partners with private sector, academia, nonprofits and many others around the world to ensure that everyone has the best information to produce the most robust weather forecasts. Private weather companies and media also play important roles in getting those forecasts and alerts out more widely to the public.A lot of businesses rely on accuracy from NOAAs weather data and forecasts: aviation, energy companies, insurance, even modern tractors precision farming equipment. The agencys long-range forecasts are essential for managing state reservoirs to ensure enough water is saved and to avoid flooding. The government agency can be held accountable in a way private businesses are not because it answers to Congress. So, the data is trustworthy, accessible and developed with the goal to protect public safety and property for everyone. Could the same be said if only for-profit companies were producing that data? This article was originally published on The Conversation. Read the original article.
