• Youd Never Believe This Color-Drenched Paris Apartment Was a Former Law Office
    www.elledecor.com
Eli Mizrahi, founder of the fashion label Mnot, is known for the head-turning eveningwear he creates for friends like Hailey Bieber, Gisele, and Kate Moss. The Lebanese-born designer and longtime New Yorker has a point of view that is unique and daring. So when he took the plunge on a Paris apartment, he went big.The space, in an 1860 building near Parc Monceau, is enormous by Parisian standards, with six bedrooms and three baths4,300 square feet in all. But while its expansiveness made a statement, the apartment was far from the daring and imaginative showplace Mizrahi had envisioned. Indeed, in its most recent iteration it had been a law office. To transform it he turned to his iPhone, where his Instagram feed had lately been filled with images showcasing the eye-popping work of a young Paris-based architecture and design studio, Uchronia. They are bold and different, and thats what I liked about them, he says.Trevor TondroVerner Pantons iconic Cloverleaf velvet sofa anchors the library. For Uchronias founder, Julien Sebban, getting the equivalent of a cold call from a potential client via a direct message on social media is more the norm than an anomaly. Founded in 2019, Uchronia gained buzz when Sebban designed the decor of Forest, a brutalist brasserie at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. In a city known for restrained elegance, Uchronia instantly stood out with its playful vocabulary of bright colors, fun florals, and wavy patterns. Eli saw one of our flower tables on Instagram, and thats how it all started, Sebban says.Trevor TondroThe dining rooms custom bow curtains were designed by Uchronia in a Dedar fabric. The end chair is by Univers Uchronia.Still, Mizrahis project pushed the young Paris design firm to the next level, in both scale and budget. In this client, Sebban found an active collaborator and collector for whom the sky was the limit. Mizrahi brought to the project a trove of blue-chip art by Richard Prince, George Condo, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and many others. He also gave Uchronia carte blanche to commission art and design specifically for the Paris apartment. Im drawn to works that make me think, Mizrahi says. I look for pieces by young and emerging artists.Tour an art-filled Paris apartment designed by UchroniaBut as ambitious as the project was, Mizrahi was anxious to move in. Sebban and his team visited the space in the summer of 2023 and quickly devised a plan. Eli wanted a funkier version of a Haussmannian apartment, something with a twist, Sebban says. Uchronia served up a marigold kitchen, an emerald primary bath, and a mirrored dining room inspired by Versailles, complete with a table that seats 20 and window treatments topped with ginormous custom-made silk bows.Eli wanted a funkier version of a Haussmannian apartment, something with a twist.-Julien SebbanUnderlying the scene-stealing decor, though, is an attention to craft and an understanding of traditional architecture. Uchronia restored the apartments classic features and enhanced them with new parquet flooring, plaster moldings, and custom mirrors. The idea was to play with the classicism but give it a modern spin. For example, Sebban took a historic design tropeurns displayed on wall bracketsand turned it on its head by commissioning artist Ebony Russell to create dozens of vases in custom colors for the kitchen and the main salon. Almost everything was site-specific, Sebban says. Every room was a joint effort between us and the artists and craftsmen. In a city of restrained elegance, Uchronia instantly stood out with its playful vocabulary of bright colors and wavy patterns. Perhaps the most surprising room of all is the library, which has a custom pink ceiling, a matching velvet modular sofa by Verner Panton, and an undulating chandelier in pink and red Murano glass commissioned for the space by the designer Christian Pellizzari. Once again Mizrahi led the way. He wanted a big gesture, something interesting and fun, Sebban says. Its definitely a statement, but the room still manages to feel cozy and conversational, with its soft palette and custom shelves filled with books and art. Its like a boudoir, Sebban adds.Trevor TondroUchronias Julien Sebban (left) with his client, Eli Mizrahi in the entry hall. Somehow, within the span of a year and with a client who was deeply involved but constantly on the go, Uchronia managed to design a home that is a visual delight, to be sure, but much more than that: Its a complete work of art. Every detail in the apartment, from the lighting to the bow-shaped flatware that appears during dinner parties, was made bespoke for the project. When asked about the challenges, Sebban bursts out laughing and says, The timeline! And the goal of creating a cohesive project where everything ties together. But honestly, this was a dream. Best of all was the chance to work closely with my client and give him exactly what he wanted. This story originally appeared in the March 2025 issue of Elle Decor. SUBSCRIBE

  • Watch: Meet the stylish new robot that threatens to out-dress you
    thenextweb.com
UK-based startup Humanoid has just shared a first look at its prototype humanoid robot the HMND 01. Its not here to overthrow humanity (yet), but it may walk, work, and possibly even out-dress you.At 59 and 154lbs, the labour automation unit is the coworker who never calls in sick, never complains about overtime, and somehow always looks sharp. Yes, HMND 01 comes with a range of interchangeable outfits. The humanoid is no slouch, either. It can walk at a brisk 5.4km/h, carry up to 15kgs, and work for four hours straight before it needs a coffee break. Or should I say, electricity recharge.Check it out for yourself in the video below:The of EU techThe latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol' founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. It's free, every week, in your inbox. Sign up now!Humanoid claims its bot has human-level (or better) dexterity for complex tasks and can navigate tight spaces like a pro. Whether its lifting, packing, or navigating tight spaces in a warehouse, this robot is ready to take on the world. And by the world, we mean retail, manufacturing, logistics, and pretty much any industry that involves repetitive tasks humans would rather avoid.Rather than plotting world domination, Humanoids founder Artem Sokolov envisions a future where humans and machines work side by side, not in competition, but in harmony. This societal shift will address social issues such as workforce shortages and ageing population while giving people more freedom to focus on more creative and meaningful work, says Sokolov, a serial entrepreneur and investor who founded Humanoid last year. The strongest argument in favour of humanoids is that the world is already designed for humans. This means humanoids unlike robot dogs or wheeled robots could move about our world with ease.Humanoid is still in the early stages of developing its robot, and it better hurry up. The space is getting increasingly crowded.Teslas Optimus is set to go on sale as early as this year, while Boston Dynamics Atlas continues to backflip its way into our dreams (or nightmares?), and Chinas Unitree bots are perfecting their dance routines. These robots are poised to take over the jobs we dont want to do and maybe a few we do.So whether youre excited or nervously side-eyeing your toaster, one things certain: the future is looking decidedly humanoid. Now, if youll excuse me, Im off to buy a new outfit. If the robots are going to out-dress me, I might as well go down in style. Story by Sin Geschwindt Sin is a climate and energy reporter at TNW. • Apple announces new Apple Health Study that uses iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods
    9to5mac.com
Apple is launching a holistic health study that aims to determine how Apple products play a role in advancing and improving physical health, mental health, and overall wellbeing. Enrollment for the brand new Apple Health Study opens today in Apples Research app version 6.0 is out today for participants in the United States. Heres more about Apples most ambitious health study to date. The study is being conducted in collaboration with Brigham and Womens Hospital, a leading research hospital and a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. []In medical research, discoveries are often limited by the number of participants who can be recruited, the amount of data that can be captured, and the duration of a given study but Apple devices expand the possibilities. The Apple Health Study builds on learnings from theApple Womens Health Study, theApple Hearing Study, and theApple Heart and Movement Study, which combined have more than 350,000 participants across the U.S.This new longitudinal, virtual study aims to understand how data from technology including Apple and third-party devices can be used to predict, detect, monitor, and manage changes in participants health. Additionally, researchers will explore connections across different areas of health. The study spans a number of health and disease areas, including activity, aging, cardiovascular health, circulatory health, cognition, hearing, menstrual health, mental health, metabolic health, mobility, neurologic health, respiratory health, sleep, and more.Apples Research app launched in 2019 and has allowed participants to voluntarily join medical research studies without doing much more than sharing information. Apple allows participants to leave its studies and stop data sharing at any time. The best part is that Apple regularly publishes insights from its studies, and the Apple Health Study is its widest net to cast yet.Read more about the Apple Health Study here, and sign up in the latest version of the Research app on iPhone. • Here are the Mac apps and utilities I couldnt live without
    9to5mac.com
My colleague Zac Hall yesterday shared the Mac apps he currently uses, and it got me thinking about the Mac apps and utilities I couldnt live without. Some are major apps, like Final Cut Pro, but there are a bunch of utilities I use on a regular basis that Id really miss if I didnt have them My key Mac appsFinal Cut ProMy colleagues Jeff Benjamin and Fernando Silva dash off about seven videos before breakfast each morning. My own video output is, er, slower. Admittedly not quite as slow as my YouTube feed would suggest, as a lot of my videos are unlisted and only produced to share with friends. But it is something I really enjoy, and I took the decision that since I was bound to want to upgrade from iMovie to Final Cut at some point, I might as well just do it from the outset a solid benefit of apps with a one-off cost.Spark MailI re-try Apples own Mail app every few years, but have mostly used third-party apps based on a mix of offering better organization for multiple accounts, and more pleasing aesthetics. (Its always seemed weird to me that Mail doesnt seem to reflect any of the design skills we associate with Apple.) For the last few years, thats been Spark, which combines clean, sleek looks with easy management of accounts and smart mailboxes. I dont bother with the AI subscription stuff.Lightroom ClassicIve used Lightroom for many years, and when Adobe turned it into a subscription app with a very different UI, I was relieved to see that the original version was retained as Lightroom Classic, even if it did now require a subscription. For me, its just a really well thought out app whose workflow mirrors the order in which I typically do things, from culling and prioritizing through editing to output. Ive created a whole bunch of my own presets over the years, so editing is usually a very efficient process.PhotoshopWe use a slot of stock images for our pieces here, and I dont want those cluttering up my photo libraries, so I use Photoshop for editing these. Most edits are simple, so I could probably use a more basic editor, but Adobes subscription packages mean you cant get Lightroom without Photoshop, so I must say, though, that the generative AI features make it super easy to create the 2:1 aspect ratio we use, which often requires generating additional content and Im generally very impressed with the results.ScrivenerI havent written any books for quite some time, but when I do I wouldnt use any other app. In novel-writing, there are planner and pantsers the latter being people who write by the seat of their pants, making it up as they go. Im very definitely a planner, creating a very detailed outline of the structure before I write a single word. Scriveners card-based system is great for that, but it also makes it really easy to refer back to earlier scenes during the writing process. The Billion Dollar Heist was 145,000 words across 204 scenes (I structured it more like a movie than a book), with constantly-switching viewpoints, and Scrivener made it s a breeze to keep track of everything.Final DraftScreenshotFor screenplays, however, Final Draft is my preferred tool. Im still very new to writing scripts, so its great to have an app that takes care of all the formatting for me. I just select Dialog, for example, which can be done with a single key-press, and Im prompted for the character name. Avoid characters whose names begin with the same latter and another single key is enough to autocomplete their name and leave you setup to type the dialog.UtilitiesThe links below are mostly to my reviews, so you can check those out for more details.TextSniperAt 9to5Mac we frequently need to quote from press releases and other source material, and sometimes this isnt as simple as it might seem. Patent documents, for example, have weird formatting which makes it almost impossible to simply copy-and-paste, and dont get me started on companies which make announcements in the form of graphics images posted to X TextSniper is a utility which allows you to copy any text, even from a photo, and is really quick and easy to use.MoomThis is my preferred macOS window management tool, enabling me to quickly switch between different window and desktop layouts on both my MacBook Pro and external monitor.PhraseExpressTextExpander without the subscription. The UI is clunkier for sure, but its not often that I interact with it I have literally dozens of macros I use all the time.Hidden BarA menubar manager, similar to Bartender.iPhone MirroringI love this app. When I have my Mac in front of me, I much prefer to do everything there, so having access to iPhone-only apps right on my Mac is really handy.NordVPNI use a VPN anytime Im accessing potentially sensitive sites on public Wi-Fi networks, including anything used to access my own files (like DropBox). NordVPN is also really handy for getting around geo-blocks, as the company seems to be better than anyone else as keeping ahead in this cat-and-mouse game. What are your must-have Mac apps and utilities? • How to Steer AI Adoption: A CISO Guide
    thehackernews.com
CISOs are finding themselves more involved in AI teams, often leading the cross-functional effort and AI strategy. But there aren't many resources to guide them on what their role should look like or what they should bring to these meetings. We've pulled together a framework for security leaders to help push AI teams and committees further in their AI adoptionproviding them with the necessary visibility and guardrails to succeed. Meet the CLEAR framework. If security teams want to play a pivotal role in their organization's AI journey, they should adopt the five steps of CLEAR to show immediate value to AI committees and leadership:C Create an AI asset inventoryL Learn what users are doingE Enforce your AI policyA Apply AI use casesR Reuse existing frameworksIf you're looking for a solution to help take advantage of GenAI securely, check out Harmonic Security. Alright, let's break down the CLEAR framework. Create an AI Asset InventoryA foundational requirement across regulatory and best-practice frameworksincluding the EU AI Act, ISO 42001, and NIST AI RMFis maintaining an AI asset inventory. Despite its importance, organizations struggle with manual, unsustainable methods of tracking AI tools. Security teams can take six key approaches to improve AI asset visibility:Procurement-Based Tracking Effective for monitoring new AI acquisitions but fails to detect AI features added to existing tools.Manual Log Gathering Analyzing network traffic and logs can help identify AI-related activity, though it falls short for SaaS-based AI.Cloud Security and DLP Solutions like CASB and Netskope offer some visibility, but enforcing policies remains a challenge.Identity and OAuth Reviewing access logs from providers like Okta or Entra can help track AI application usage.Extending Existing Inventories Classifying AI tools based on risk ensures alignment with enterprise governance, but adoption moves quickly.Specialized Tooling Continuous monitoring tools detect AI usage, including personal and free accounts, ensuring comprehensive oversight. Includes the likes of Harmonic Security.Learn: Shift to Proactive Identification of AI Use CasesSecurity teams should proactively identify AI applications that employees are using instead of blocking them outrightusers will find workarounds otherwise. By tracking why employees turn to AI tools, security leaders can recommend safer, compliant alternatives that align with organizational policies. This insight is invaluable in AI team discussions.Second, once you know how employees are using AI, you can give better training. These training programs are going to become increasingly important amid the rollout of the EU AI Act, which mandates that organizations provide AI literacy programs:"Providers and deployers of AI systems shall take measures to ensure, to their best extent, a sufficient level of AI literacy of their staff and other persons dealing with the operation and use of AI systems"Enforce an AI PolicyMost organizations have implemented AI policies, yet enforcement remains a challenge. Many organizations opt to simply issue AI policies and hope employees follow the guidance. While this approach avoids friction, it provides little enforcement or visibility, leaving organizations exposed to potential security and compliance risks.Typically, security teams take one of two approaches:Secure Browser Controls Some organizations route AI traffic through a secure browser to monitor and manage usage. This approach covers most generative AI traffic but has drawbacksit often restricts copy-paste functionality, driving users to alternative devices or browsers to bypass controls.DLP or CASB Solutions Others leverage existing Data Loss Prevention (DLP) or Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) investments to enforce AI policies. These solutions can help track and regulate AI tool usage, but traditional regex-based methods often generate excessive noise. Additionally, site categorization databases used for blocking are frequently outdated, leading to inconsistent enforcement.Striking the right balance between control and usability is key to successful AI policy enforcement. And if you need help building a GenAI policy, check out our free generator: GenAI Usage Policy Generator.Apply AI Use Cases for SecurityMost of this discussion is about securing AI, but let's not forget that the AI team also wants to hear about cool, impactful AI use cases across the business. What better way to show you care about the AI journey than to actually implement them yourself?AI use cases for security are still in their infancy, but security teams are already seeing some benefits for detection and response, DLP, and email security. Documenting these and bringing these use cases to AI team meetings can be powerful especially referencing KPIs for productivity and efficiency gains.Reuse Existing FrameworksInstead of reinventing governance structures, security teams can integrate AI oversight into existing frameworks like NIST AI RMF and ISO 42001. A practical example is NIST CSF 2.0, which now includes the "Govern" function, covering: Organizational AI risk management strategies Cybersecurity supply chain considerations AI-related roles, responsibilities, and policies Given this expanded scope, NIST CSF 2.0 offers a robust foundation for AI security governance. Take a Leading Role in AI Governance for Your CompanySecurity teams have a unique opportunity to take a leading role in AI governance by remembering CLEAR:Creating AI asset inventoriesLearning user behaviorsEnforcing policies through trainingApplying AI use cases for securityReusing existing frameworksBy following these steps, CISOs can demonstrate value to AI teams and play a crucial role in their organization's AI strategy. To learn more about overcoming GenAI adoption barriers, check out Harmonic Security.Found this article interesting? www.technologyreview.com
This is today's edition ofThe Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of what's going on in the world of technology. Robots are bringing new life to extinct species In the last few years, paleontologists have developed a new trick for turning back time and studying prehistoric animals: building experimental robotic models of them. In the absence of a living specimen, scientists say, an ambling, flying, swimming, or slithering automaton is the next best thing for studying the behavior of extinct organisms. Here are four examples of robots that are shedding light on creatures of yore. AI crawler wars threaten to make the web more closed for everyone Shayne Longpre is a PhD Candidate at MIT, where his research focuses on the intersection of AI and policy. He leads the Data Provenance Initiative. We often take the internet for granted. Its an ocean of information at our fingertipsand it simply works. But this system relies on swarms of crawlersbots that roam the web, visit millions of websites every day, and report what they see. Crawlers are endemic. Now representing half of all internet traffic, they will soon outpace human traffic. This unseen subway of the web ferries information from site to site, day and night. And as of late, they serve one more purpose: Companies such as OpenAI use web-crawled data to train their artificial intelligence systems, like ChatGPT. Understandably, websites are now fighting back for fear that this invasive speciesAI crawlerswill help displace them. But theres a problem: This pushback is also threatening the transparency and open borders of the web. Read the full story. City centre scheme was given planning a year agoCGI of Hawkins Browns proposals for a 13-storey library for Manchester Metropolitan UniversityWork on a 90m scheme to build a new library designed for Manchester Metropolitan University is finally set to start at the end of this year. The 13-storey project in the city centre will see the partial demolition of the universitys existing All Saints Library and the construction of a low-carbon replacement containing just over 22,000 sq m of floorspace. The job, which has been designed by Hawkins Brown, was approved by the local council a year ago.But a university spokesman said it hasnt yet appointed a main contractor for work despite the job being slated to start last year and finish in 2028.He added: We havent appointed a contractor. The reason for this is that the designers have been asked to make some changes to their proposals nothing major but it has meant that we havent been in a position to appoint a contractor for the works yet.Work is expected to start on demolishing the existing building at the end of this year. The scheme features a dramatic zig zag facadeThe 1970s All Saints Library and neighbouring All Saints Building would be cut in two under the plans, with the latter to be totally demolished and the former to be stripped back to its core and covered with a new facade.Library specialist Schmidt Hammer Larsen is working with Hawkins Brown on the plans, with Turner & Townsend on board as project manager alongside planning consultant Deloitte and cost consultant Gardiner & Theobald.Planit IE is also on the team as landscape architect while Buro Happold has multiple roles including structural and civil engineer, facade engineer, MEP engineer, fire engineer and transport consultant. The building will house around 3,800 study seats, a range of event spaces, bookable rooms, a prayer facility, wellbeing spaces, office space for library staff and 9,000 linear metres of books.
