    Tablet PCs and pen displays have long been considered a luxury among digital artists and designers, but not everyone considers them to be the best tool. Although its not how we would normally draw on paper, some find the screen-less drawing tablets to not only be more affordable but also more usable and more efficient, at least after a certain learning curve. It allows users to keep their favorite laptop or stick to their carefully calibrated monitors while encouraging a posture that is also more ergonomic than hunching over a display.That said, the design of these drawing devices hasnt changed much over the course of the years, especially Wacoms aging Intuos Pro line. That changes now, however, with a new design thats not only slimmer and sleeker but also completely changes the way you use these black slates, for better or for worse. You could say that Wacom is giving its drawing tablet line a new twist, quite literally.Designer: WacomThe first thing youll notice in the new design is that the physical controls are no longer off to the side but are at the top. Wacom has already been using this convention on the non-Pro Intuos line, so this is a case of the more premium models playing catch up. This design allows for greater flexibility for right and left-handed users without having to go through the process of turning the tablet to one side or the other and then configuring the software to use the correct orientation.The controls themselves have also changed their design, with five buttons now lumped together in a single, space-saving circle. The touch-sensitive Touch Ring has also been replaced with a proper dial, delivering tactile feedback that makes it easier to make more precise changes. That said, having the controls above the drawing area rather than to the side might also be awkward for some who find it more natural and comfortable to have their non-drawing hand off to the side as well.Once you get over the changes to the buttons and dials, however, you will finally notice how compact and thin the new 2025 Intuos Pro tablets have become. They are physically smaller than their predecessors, but they offer the same or an even bigger active area, so youre not missing out on anything. Their slimmer design makes it even easier to bring them anywhere with you, in case you have some downtime to do some creative work on the go.Modernizing the design of the Intuos Pro line has been a long time coming. For a device aimed at artists and designers, its decades-old appearance was no longer inspiring or usable. In the meantime, Wacoms rivals have grown and improved, offering products that at the very least cannibalize the giants bottom line.     MacworldCollating pages used to be an intensely manual process. A printera human being, not a devicewould produce many copies of the same pages and workers would collate or gather those into the right order for final assembly, whether to become a book or a stapled stack. Collating via printing software is a lot easier. But its also a little murky since the term doesnt describe an act most of us remain familiar with.In Apples Print dialog, the Collation option under Print Handling has a precise meaning when you choose to print two or more copies: print the entire document from start to finish for each copy before starting the next. If you disable Collation, each page is printed the number of times you specified in order from start to finish.If you have a five-page document and print three single-sided copies, heres how that differs:Collation on:1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5Collation off:1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5Theres an asterisk required for the Collation order, however: with some printers, outputting pages 1 to 5 in order would result in the wrong order, with 1 on the bottom of a stack and 5 on the top. Apple provides a separate function to handle whether a printer outputs face down or face up: Sheet Order. The three options for Sheet Order are Automatic (the default), Normal, and Reverse.macOS determines face up or face down from the printer driver, so leaving Sheet Order set to Automatic should correctly print collated pages in the order 1 to 5 for face-down printing and 5 to 1 for face-up. Although the technology remains unpredictable and sometimes baffling, individuals from all across the world and from all walks of life are finding it useful, supportive, and comforting, too. People are using large language models to seek validation, mediate marital arguments, and help navigate interactions with their community. Theyre using it for support in parenting, for self-care, and even to fall in love. In the coming decades, many more humans will join them. And this is only the beginning. And my son likes to hear the stories.I dont think using AI will be optional in our future lives. I think itll be widely adopted across all societies and companies, and because the internet is already part of my childrens culture, I cant avoid them becoming exposed to AI. But Ill explain to them that like other kinds of technologies, its a tool that can be used in both good and bad ways. You need to educate and explain what the harms can be. And however useful it is, Ill try to teach them that there is nothing better than true human connection, and you cant replace it with AI.

The initial release was targeted at visualization, but in 2023 Chaos added support for rendering deforming meshes, like animated characters, and began pitching Vantage at VFX work.Vantage 2.7: support for more native V-Ray scattering features and the VRayDirt textureVantage 2.7 adds support for more of V-Rays native features, particularly from Chaos Scatter, its object scattering system.The renderer now supports scatter distribution maps, introduced last year in V-Ray 7, and scatter surface color from .vrscene files.Vantage also now supports V-Rays VRayDirt texture map, described on Chaoss blog as a highly requested change.The Sun and Sky system has been updated to the PRG Clear Sky model introduced in V-Ray 7, which generates more realistic results at sunrise and sunset.New lens distortion, vignetting and Blur/Sharpen effectsVantage 2.7 also introduces a new lens distortion system, with users able to mimic distortions created by real-world camera lenses using ST maps, as in many compositing and camera tracking apps.The renderer also now supports vignetting both camera vignetting and optical vignetting and gets new Blur/Sharpen controls in the Color Corrections tab for post effects.Support for OCIO and DLSS 4Other key changes include support for VFX color management standard OCIO (OpenColorIO).DLSS, NVIDIAs AI-based image reconstruction system, first integrated into Vantage in 2023, has been updated to DLSS 4, the current generation of the technology.According to Chaos, the change improve[s] temporal stability to minimize artifacts like ghosting and flickering during real-time rendering.The update also adds support for video encoding on AMD and Intel GPUs, and the option to export 16-bit as well as 8-bit PNG files, although they remain standard dynamic range images.Price and system requirementsChaos Vantage is compatible with Windows 10+ and DXR-compatible AMD, Intel or NVIDIA GPUs.
