• 10 Romantically Ghoulish Horror Movies to Stream for Valentines Day
    gizmodo.com
You could scroll straight to any romance movie section and sit through another round of The Notebook or When Harry Met Sally. But if you want some devilish delights mixed in with your declarations of love and make-outs in the rain, why not try a horror romance instead? Here are 10 on streaming services or available to rent to add a little gruesome spice into your Valentines Day viewing. Your Monster (2024) A struggling actress recovering from cancer endures another blow when her longtime boyfrienda playwright whod once seen her as his musedumps her while visiting her in the hospital. But this is no ordinary break-up tale; while licking her wounds in her childhood home, she realizes the monster she once believed lived in the closet is somehow real, and becomes a helpful if confusing part of her healing journey. Hes also kinda cute despite looking a lot like the Beast? Melissa Barrera (Scream, Abigail) is a most adorable trainwreck in this film from writer-director Caroline Lindy, now streaming on Max. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) The movie that spawned the TV sensation (hopefully soon to return!) is, yes, about a ditzy cheerleader who learns shes the chosen one, destined to rid the world of vampires. But its also got more than a bit of rom-com in its DNA, giving us an odd-couple match-up between Valley Girl Buffy (Kristy Swanson) and burnout Pike (Luke Perry), as well as a wonderful slate of supporting characters played by Donald Sutherland, Rutger Hauer, Paul Reubens, Hilary Swank, David Arquette, Stephen Root, and more. Streaming on Amazon Prime Video.Warm Bodies (2013) Before he went toe-to-toe with Count Orlok in Nosferatu, or with Count Dracula in Renfield, Nicholas Hoult starred as a zombie whose cold, dead heart is stirred back to life in the post-apocalypse when he falls in love with a human survivor (A Discovery of Witches Teresa Palmer). With a story that riffs on Romeo and Juliet and the novelty factor of a) giving that story a happy ending and b) giving a zombie story a happy ending, as well as c) telling its story from a zombies point-of-view, Warm Bodies is a surprisingly sweet treat. Streaming on Amazon Prime Video.Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010) While we eagerly await writer-director Eli Craigs new horror comedy, the evocatively titled Clown in a Cornfield, its never a bad time to revisit his feature debut, a slasher parody that asks what if the scary backwoods rednecks were actually the good guys? Theres a heaping of bromance between the title characters (Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk), but unexpected romance also sparks between a hillbilly and a college girl (30 Rocks Katrina Bowden) amid all the misunderstandings and accidental carnage. Streaming on Peacock. Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person (2023) The inspiration for this list is new to Shudder anddespite that mouthful of a titleis a surprisingly sweet tale. Two misfits meet cute when hes trying to decide if he should leap off a building, and shes trying to gather the nerve to sink her newly sprouted vampire fangs into her first living victim. Romance seems impossible, and there are some towering complications, but this tale from Ariane Louis-Seize offers hope that there really is somebody for everyone, even if one of them happens to be a blood-sucking monster. Streaming on Shudder. Bride of Chucky (1998) While these fiends are more often than not trying to rip each others throats out, theres a deep love between them that nothingnot even being transformed into hideous, cackling dollscan tear asunder. Chucky (Brad Dourif) was always a terrifying guy, but add in Tiffany (played in all her forms by the great Jennifer Tilly) and the chaos is amplified an alarming amount, not to mention the campy comedy. Rent on Amazon Prime Video. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) While a reboot/sequel/franchise revival will soon bring yet another revenge-hungry villain into the I Know What You Did Last Summer universe, the original slasher is worth a nostalgic re-watch. It fits on this list because the main couple, played by 90s teen dreams Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., actually survive all the hook-handed mayhem and misguided wait, are you the killer? suspicions. The couple that survives a slasher together, stays together at least until the sequel.Streaming on Netflix.Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) Jim Jarmuschs tale of vampire lovers (Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston) digs into an aspect of immortality that few movies ever dohow boring it can bewhile also addressing mundane quirks of vampire life, like how one needs to carefully arrange all air travel to avoid any overlap with the sunrise. Its also stylish as hell and has an aura of cool clinging to every framenot to mention a wry sense of humor. Rent on Amazon Prime Video. Attachment (2022) In this Danish film, former child star Maja (Josephine Park) recovers some much-needed excitement in her life when she forms an instant connection with Leah (Game of Thrones Ellie Kendrick). But their rapid-fire romance hits a roadblock when Leah becomes suddenly ill; Maja does her best to help her new love recover, but soon realizes theres a dark supernatural cause behind all the torment. Streaming on Shudder.Bram Stokers Dracula (1992) Admit ityouve had Francis Ford Coppolas uber-gothic, decadent interpretation of Bram Stokers classic on the brain ever since you watched Nosferatu, or perhaps even since you tried to make heads or tails of his even more decadent recent release, Megalopolis. Equal parts campy, creepy, and swoon-worthy, Bram Stokers Dracula reminds us of Gary Oldmans versatility, Winona Ryders pale glamour, and Keanu Reeves limited skills with accents, as well as filling the classic roles of Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins) and Renfield (Tom Waits) with all-time performances. Rent on Amazon Prime Video. Want more io9 news? Located on the south coast of Bahia, in Trancoso, just 700 meters from the beach and 4.5 km from the famous Quadrado, an old fishing village and now full of shops and restaurants, the GS house was designed as a haven of tranquility and replenishment. of energy for a couple from So Paulo. Total integration with greenery and lightness were the client's main wishes for the house, guiding the entire development of the project.Save this picture!Save this picture! With a plot of 3,267m and an elongated rectangular shape, the solution for implementation was to distribute the house in 04 modules throughout the land. The first two, intended for the intimate and service area, were located in the first half of the land, while the other two, intended for the social and leisure area, were located in the second half of the land, overlooking a large grassy portion of the condominium. Module 01, facing the street, consists of a gym, storage and covered parking with a pergola.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Module 02, with two floors, is composed on the ground floor of two guest suites, cellar, toilet, kitchen, laundry area and caretaker's house; on the upper floor, there is a master suite, two suites for the children, a TV room and a small office. All suites face east. The suites on the upper floor received extra protection on the facade, a wooden muxarabi-type frame, bringing more thermal comfort and privacy. All suite bathrooms, as well as the toilet, have a private garden.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Module 03 corresponds to the living, dining and balcony rooms. The double height ceiling and the frames on all sides favored good ventilation of the space and complete integration with the landscaping. Module 04 corresponds to the gourmet area, designed as a large covered but open balcony. A soft stone box provides privacy from the neighboring land. The baths were positioned underground. Embracing module 04 is the swimming pool, which has a sundeck, small beach, hydro and a lane for swimming. The triangular shape of the pool follows the shape of the land itself.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Modules 03 and 04 are close to a large grassy area of the condominium, which, thanks to the low landscaping of the border, is mistaken for an extension of the land. Connections between the modules are made through a wooden walkway, which invites you to take a walk amidst the greenery, the sounds of birds and the water mirrors, which also have a cooling function.Save this picture!Save this picture! The structure of the house is entirely made of glued laminated wood, except for the 2-story modules, where the ground floor functions as a concrete box to anchor the wooden structure on the upper floor. The use of this system enabled a slimmer structure, which was the client's wish, covering larger spans and requiring less maintenance.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! To reinforce the connection with nature, the elements used are, for the most part, natural, such as the wooden structure, micro cement flooring, cumaru wood deck, pool covering and water mirrors in green candeias granite, moledo stone on the garden walls, pine wood tiles and copper lamps.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The interior design was also prepared by Attmo Arquitetos, seeking references from objects and furniture from the region, such as old trunks, copper pans, screws from old mills that were transformed into lampshades. Straw produced in the region is present in the lining and canvas and twill fabrics were used, with light colors.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeAttmo arquitetosOfficePublished on February 13, 2025Cite: "GS House / Attmo arquitetos" [Casa GS / Attmo arquitetos] 13 Feb 2025. • Which body parts do humans not need?
    www.popsci.com
Our bodies are like museums of evolution. We walk on two legs because a common ancestor evolved to do so millions of years ago. And, like any showroom, we house organs and functions that have outlived their original purpose.Take the appendix, for example. Once a heavyweight in digesting a plant-heavy diet, it was dismissed by evolutionary scientist Charles Darwin, who wrongly decided that it was no longer necessary due to dietary shifts. Wisdom teeth helped early humans gnaw through raw roots and tough meats, but today, theyre little more than an expensive dental complication since our food is more processed. Even goosebumpsonce a handy way to fluff up body hair for warmth or protect against predatorsare now seen as little more than a fleeting moment of aesthetic drama. So why do most of us still have these body parts and functions? Its likely because they arent causing us any harm, explained Matthew Ravosa, the director of the Center for Functional Anatomy and Evolution at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Even though they may not present an advantage, the lack of disadvantage reduces the natural selection pressures that typically eliminate traits within a population. Some of these features have been co-opted or repurposed for a different function due to evolutionary changes in environment, behavior, or selective pressures. The appendix is a good example of that, added Ravosa.[ Related: Could we ever regrow our adult teeth? ]Once considered vestigial, the appendix may play an essential role in gut health, helping the immune system fight pathogens. It contains a high concentration of immune tissue and houses beneficial bacteria that repopulate the gut microbiome after an illness or antibiotic use. This understanding has challenged the long-held belief that the appendix is a redundant organ.Sometimes redundancy has a way of showing up under certain conditions; theyre not truly redundant, said Michael Snyder, director of the Snyder Lab at Stanford University. Going back to the appendix, its been suggested that it does have a use. Get the Popular Science newsletter By signing up you agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Its not well understood whats truly vestigial and what body parts may still be functioning, albeit in a different way. Still, we are beginning to see people born without some body parts commonly understood to be pointless. Studies have shown that around 35 percent of the population are now born without wisdom teeth. (Lucky!) The palmaris longus, a tendon in the forearm present in some but absent in others, once aided in climbing and gripping but is now functionally irrelevant. Research has shown that a small percentage of the population is even born without itand not having the muscle doesnt affect grip strength in any significant way.Since evolution is ongoing, could we be on the verge of shedding more parts as our diets, medical interventions, and technology advance? As is often the case with future-oriented scientific questions, the answer is that no one really knows.Theres no indication that we have any idea about what the future has in store for us because the pace at which technology is changing and that might be affecting evolution is so great, and its a lot less predictable than one would think, explained Ravosa. Were learning about vestigial organs largely by looking backward, he added. Well have to just sit around and see because we cant predict the future. This story is part of Popular SciencesAsk Us Anything series, where we answer your most outlandish, mind-burning questions, from the ordinary to the off-the-wall.
