Marvel Rivals surpasses 40m players, as NetEase denies abandoning western studiosCompany has "not wavered in its global expansion plans".Image credit: NetEase News by Ed Nightingale Deputy News Editor Published on Feb. 20, 2025 Marvel Rivals has amassed over 40 million players since its launch, but Chinese publisher NetEase has denied abandoning western studios after it laid off a number of developers from the game's US development team.In its latest financial report, the company also boasted the free-to-play hero shooter topped Steam's global sellers chart after launch and had over 10 million registered users within 72 hours. However, earlier this week NetEase laid off an unspecified number of employees from Marvel Rivals' US development team, with game director Thaddeus Sasser breaking the news first. "This is such a weird industry," he wrote. "My stellar, talented team just helped deliver an incredibly successful new franchise in Marvel Rivals for NetEase Games... and were just laid off!"Marvel Rivals: Season 1.5 Update! | Dev Vision Vol. 04Watch on YouTubeNetease stated afterwards the layoffs were a "difficult decision" made to "optimise development efficiency". However, a new report from VentureBeat suggests there's more to come.Sources interviewed by VentureBeat said the company is losing its will to make games outside of China, in part due to the high cost of US developers. The success of games like Game Science's Black Myth: Wukong also prove the AAA capabilities of China's own development studios. The report also highlights that recent layoffs have coincidentally occurred alongside the trade war between the US and China, which could have further repercussions in the global games industry.NetEase has denied such allegations."As far as overseas business efforts are concerned, NetEase has not wavered in its global expansion plans," reads a statement from the company to VentureBeat."Our 'two-pronged' approach, proposed in 2022 (combining self-research and investments to explore overseas markets), is still actively progressing and yielding positive results. For titles developed by the self-owned studios, we successfully launched games like Once Human and Marvel Rivals in 2024. These projects demonstrate NetEase's ability, along with our talented development teams, to produce high-quality games loved by players worldwide. For 2025, we have an extensive pipeline of titles in development, featuring a variety of genres, including FragPunk, Ananta and more."NetEase did, however, acknowledge a "scaling down" of studios - something that has led to shutdowns and layoffs at an array of studios including Mass Effect veteran Mac Walters' Worlds Untold, Halo Infinite head of design Jerry Hook's Jar of Sparks and Just Cause creator Christofer Sundberg's Liquid Swords."As part of our investment strategy, we started scaling down two of our studios at the end of 2024," it said. "This decision was based purely on business evaluations and was not influenced by other factors. And this represents only a small portion of our overseas studio portfolio. Our studios in North America, UK, Spain, and Japan all continue to refine and develop their ongoing game projects."It continued: "We are very open and aim to leverage our company's strengths and accumulated expertise to support all developers. In order to achieve this vision, we have implemented an evaluation process, which applies equally to all NetEase studios globally both domestic and overseas."As far as the trade war is concerned, NetEase responded: "Regarding the tariff trade war, yes of course we are mindful of any developments in international trade. However, our decisions have been based solely on business evaluations and not influenced by other factors. We highly respect our gaming community in the US and their love and enthusiasm for our games is valued and appreciated."Could other Chinese games companies pull out of the US? All eyes are on Chinese conglomerate Tencent, the biggest games company in the world, which the US labelled as a military company last month. Tencent threatened "legal proceedings" in retaliation."While geopolitical concerns and cost pressures after two challenging years for the global video game industry are driving Chinese game companies to re-evaluate their US operations, this does not signal a withdrawal from operating and investing in studios overseas," gaming analyst firm Niko Partners wrote yesterday. "It instead reflects a more selective and strategic approach to overseas investments, prioritizing projects with clear market potential - a business and fiscally driven strategy."Elsewhere in its financial report, NetEase stated wuxia action game Where Winds Meet surpassed 3m downloads within four days of its PC launch in China - combined with the later mobile release, the game had 15 million players within two weeks. A release outside of China is expected this year."We boldly pushed the boundaries of innovation once again in 2024, delivering groundbreaking gaming experiences that captivated players worldwide," said CEO William Ding. "Our new hit titles not only redefined gameplay but also set new industry benchmarks, while our legacy franchises gained fresh momentum through striking enhancements in design, storytelling and immersive content. As our diverse game portfolio expands across more genres and engages an ever-growing global audience, we remain dedicated to fostering creativity and collaborating with top talent and strategic partners to shape the next wave of gaming trends."Marvel Rivals season 1.5 launches tomorrow, adding The Thing and Human Torch among other additions detailed in the patch notes. The developer recently U-turned on a decision to reset player ranks mid-season.

There were mass layoffs last year with 220 roles eliminated, but the most prolific termination was Christoper Barrett. The former Destiny 2 director has filed a $200 million lawsuit against Sony and Bungie for the termination, and Sony has struck back with a response full of shocking claims.Sony responds to former Destiny 2 directors $200M lawsuitFollowing their removal, former Destiny 2 and Marathon reboot director, Christopher Barrett, filed a lawsuit against Sony and Bungie in December 2024, alleging wrongful termination. In the lawsuit, Barrett claims Bungie and Sony deliberately destroyed [his] reputation by falsely, and publicly, insinuating they had investigated Barrett and found he had engaged in sexual misconduct. The lawsuit also claims the investigation was a brazen scheme from both companies to shift blame for and deflect attention from their massive business failures, as well as to avoid paying Barrett more than $45 million he was owed under his employment agreement. Now Sony has responded to the lawsuit in a 128-page filing. Sonys response claims Barrett targeted a lower-level, female employee he wasnt working with directly and progressively pushed boundaries with the employee by making subtle references to her physical appearance or expressing his interest in her romantically.Barrett was alleged to have acted inappropriately with several different female employees, and Sonys response includes nine written excerpts from text messages and DMs. One of the excerpts includes Barrett telling VICTIM 3, I hope [your boyfriend] doesnt mind I text you a lot and I just worry. Like I really enjoy texting you and talking. I dont want him to get the right idea. Must-Listen: Publishing Manor Lords w/ Joe Robinson VideoGamer Podcast Listen Now On page three of Sonys response, Barrett sent VICTIM 2 a direct message on Instagram saying, You are the holy grail. Ihopeyou findaperson worthy ofyour attention. He also qualified the message with, Im not hitting on you. I hope it doesnt feel like that. Im married. But I can be honest. You are in the .000001 and better be treated like that forever. When VICTIM 2 responded that her boyfriend treats her well, Barrett responded, He better [.] Cuz I would hit on you if he wasnt.Sonys response argues, Barretts predatory behaviour caused victims to seek guidance from other Bungie employees on how to manage Barretts constant boundary-pushing given that he was a long-standing, senior member of the company. Multiple victims reported to Human Resources during the investigation that they were afraid for their jobs during these encounters.Christoper Barretts lawyer respondsChristoper Barretts lawyer has responded to Sonys filing in a statement sent to Game File. The statement can be found below:Sony continues to disingenuously cherry pick text messages and alleged conversations and make unsupported and conclusory statements to defame Christopher and justify terminating him to avoid paying him what he was owed under his employment agreements. It is telling that Sony does not include the full text messages as exhibits, or the full content of these conversations, and nothing in Sonys response provides a legitimate legal or factual basis to terminate Christopher for cause.Christopher is confident that when all the evidence is presented, it will be clear that Sony engaged in a scheme to strip him of his role and the equity awards he earned for his 25 years of loyal service to the company. In the original lawsuit from Barrett, it was claimed that inappropriate behaviour was part of the workplace at Bungie. The lawsuit alleged, A very senior Bungie executive texted Barrett and others sexually suggestive material, including lewd photographs, texts about his sex life (including graphic descriptions of particular sex acts), and texts concerning the appearance of women working for Bungie. The original lawsuit also claimed, Bungie maintained an email channel that shared lewd and semi-pornographic content to the entire studio. Those images were occasionally shared on a projector at studio events. In response to the above accusations of inappropriate behaviour within Bungie, Sonys filing briefly says, Defendants lack knowledge or information sufficient to form a belief as to the truth of the allegations.Lastly, Barretts overall argument is that Sony could not have legitimately fired him for cause unless he had committed specific prohibited acts such as engage in any financial improprieties or have or solicit any improper sexual relationships with his colleagues. To this, Sonys filing states, Defendants vehemently deny the allegation that Barrett did not engage in any conduct that could be the basis for a finding of Cause. For more Destiny 2, players are gettingunreleased weaponsno one is supposed to get yet, and leaks have revealed an 80% damage buff perk and weaponpre-order bonuspresumably for Apollo.Destiny 2Platform(s):Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Web, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/XGenre(s):Action, Adventure, First Person, Massively Multiplayer, Shooter8VideoGamerRelated TopicsDestiny 2 Subscribe to our newsletters!By subscribing, you agree to our Privacy Policy and may receive occasional deal communications; you can unsubscribe anytime.Share

  • Diablo creator explains ARPGs are inherently live-service to some degree, but the blame is more on WoW

You can trust VideoGamer. Our team of gaming experts spend hours testing and reviewing the latest games, to ensure you're reading the most comprehensive guide possible. Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games here Contents hide David Brevik, the creator of Diablo, has plenty of experience with live-service development. From his regret-filled departure from Marvel Heroes to his early plans for Diablo 3, Breviks career has evolved alongside what we now know as a live-service game. For many modern developers, including current head of Diablo Rod Fergusson, ARPGs and live-service go hand-in-hand. Some say the early success of ladders in Diablo 2 led to the rise of live-service later on, but Brevik believes theres a huge difference between players deciding to play a game as a lifestyle game and a game being designed around it.Diablo 2 didnt create live-serviceSpeaking on the latest episode of the VideoGamer Podcast, Brevik explains that the claims of Diablo kicking off live-service is probably true to some degree. However, when Diablo 2 was seeing massive online success in the early 2000s, that success wasnt coming because of continued updates, it was because the game was fun. Save Up to $1,200 on the Samsung Galaxy S25! Pre-order now and save big with trade-in and Samsung credit. Limited time only! *Includes trade-in value + $300 Samsung credit. The audience that played for the ladders and things like that, they were a hardcore audience, Brevik explained. But a great majority of the people who played Diablo 2 didnt play it as a lifestyle game to be on the ladders, they just played it as a lifestyle game because they enjoyed the game.Brevik believes that Diablo 2 eventually became kind of a lifestyle game but not in the same way they are now. As Diablo was exploding in popularity, MMOs like EverQuest and World of Warcraft were actually creating the foundations of what a live-service game would be. It just happened to be a formula that would slot into ARPGs very well more than a decade on. Must-Listen: Publishing Manor Lords w/ Joe Robinson VideoGamer Podcast Listen Now As for ARPGs like Diablo 2 being the origin of live-service, Brevik doesnt believe that to be true. While it is true that Breviks work on Hellgate: London and Marvel Heroes helped to popularise live-service ARPGs, even those games had inspiration from games like WoW.[Ladders are] not the same as some of the live-service games now where youre competing in this particular thing or youve got some kind of special mechanic for this season and youve got a season pass, Brevik said. That stuff didnt really come out of Diablo 2.Nowadays, Diablo 2 can be enjoyed as a live-service game. Project Diablo 2, which Brevik helps with occasionally, has seasons, new uber bosses and more coming to the game all the time. As Brevik explained, theres a great link between ARPGs and live-service, they slot together well, extremely well, but the genre can, has, and will, live without live-service.Diablo 2Platform(s):PCGenre(s):UnknownSubscribe to our newsletters!By subscribing, you agree to our Privacy Policy and may receive occasional deal communications; you can unsubscribe anytime.Share

  • Is the Cabinet of Curiosities Making a Comeback?
    www.architecturaldigest.com
If theres one single aesthetic thats been slowly creeping into mainstream fashion, culture and interiors, it may just be Victorian. With icons as far-flung as Nosferatu and Simone Rocha referencing the era recently, its undeniable. And, with the recent collecting craze of everything from Sonny Angels to antique glass swans, the trinket is alive and well. Enter: the modern-day cabinet of curiosities, which seems to be flourishing in 2025.For the unfamiliar, the cabinet of curiosities emerged in the Renaissance era. These large, spellbinding glass cabinets (or small displays, or entire rooms) were full of rare objects from around the world, including everything from portrait miniatures, coral, rare coins, jewels, and shells. Though inherently a Renaissance idea, the concept was perfected in the Victorian era (from 1837 to 1901) due to increased travel and exploration. This year, the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City is opening an exhibition devoted to cabinets of curiosities in fashion; David Yurmans new Miami Design District boutique has a cabinet of curiosities on display; and people of all ages are creating their own versions, stacking them with personal items, collectibles, and even vintage objects like makeup compacts or rare jewelry or shoes, putting them on display. The cabinet of curiosities is thriving, it just might contain shell-shaped Miu Miu shoes from 2017 instead of preserved animals. At least mine does.Eileen CostaWhat makes the idea of a cabinet of curiosities compelling is that it is so personal. Historical paintings may show pieces like natural specimens (naturalia) or scientific instruments, but the reality is that a true cabinet of curiosities could contain anything interesting, most often items picked up during travel or given as gifts. A lot of my research into the history of the cabinet through the 18th century focused on what kinds of objects were collected within the cabinets, explains Colleen Hill, curator of Fashioning Wonder: A Cabinet of Curiosities at the Museum at FIT. I thought it would be really interesting to look at some of these larger categories, everything from objects of illusion to anatomical specimens to shells, and see how fashion has and continues to reference those same kinds of themes that inspired collectors hundreds of years ago.Unsurprisingly, even hundreds of years ago, shoes were at the top of collectors lists, not just to wear but rather to display as beautiful items in ones home interior. Cabinets of curiosities were meant to be this microcosm of knowledge, so you would collect not just objects from the natural world, but also human-made artifacts, Hill says. She cites super-tall Chopins, embellished shoes from India, and rare jewelry as some of the historical examples.Even though were living during unprecedented times, the art of collecting is more popular than ever. Like the aforementioned Sonny Angels craze that has spurred meet-up groups, others are collecting rare archival fashion or antique objects, many for the first time. Unsurprisingly, this seems to be coinciding with the rising popularity of thrifting and antiquing. Jacquelyn Rambo, a Massachusetts-based teacher and content creator who often thrifts her favorite objects and lives in a 1940s stone Cape Cod-style house, frequently finds antiques like a convex glass curio cabinet that she found in early 2023 on Facebook Marketplace for $200. I started researching cabinets and found photos of curio cabinets like these and how people would style them in eclectic ways, she recalls. I went to a bunch of antique stores in my area of Pennsylvania, but wasnt able to find the right onesome didnt have a locking mechanism, some had new glass. I resorted to Facebook Marketplace and almost immediately found the one we would eventually take home! It was the first piece my partner and I bought together for our home and curated the rest of the room around it and our fireplace.Photo: Jacquelyn RamboRambo is deeply inspired by the Aestheticism and Arts and Crafts movements from the Victorian era, emphasizing how painstaking details were ever present. Her own cabinet of curiosities is used to store cabinet cards, tintypes, and oddities from the mid 19th century through the 1930s, including turn-of-the-century medical equipment like a pharmaceutical kit, glass eyes, animal skulls, and Victorian mourning pieces. She also collects brooches and pendants, even watch chains made of finely woven human haira common theme for sentimental jewelry in the 19th century.

  • DOGE Has 'God Mode' Access to Government Data
    www.theatlantic.com
Illustration by Paul Spella / The Atlantic. Source: Getty.TechnologyDOGE Has God Mode Access to Government DataThe presidents special commission now has an unprecedented ability to view and manipulate information at many federal agencies.By Charlie Warzel, Ian Bogost, and Matteo WongFebruary 19, 2025, 3:59 PM ET If you have tips about the remaking of the federal government, you can contact Charlie, Ian, and Matteo on Signal at @cwarzel.92, @ibogost.47, and @matteowong.52.DOGE has achieved God mode. Thats according to an employee in senior leadership at USAID, who told us that Elon Musks Department of Government Efficiency now has full, unrestricted access to the agencys digital infrastructureincluding total control over systems that Americans working in conflict zones rely on, the ability to see and manipulate financial systems that have historically awarded tens of billions of dollars, and perhaps much more. The employees account, along with the accounts of several others across federal agencies, offers the clearest portrait yet of just how deep DOGE has burrowed into the systems of the federal governmentand the sensitive information of countless Americans. In the coming weeks, the team is expected to enter IT systems at the CDC and Federal Aviation Administration, and it already has done so at NASA, according to sources weve spoken with at each of those agencies. At least one DOGE ally appears to be working to open back doors into systems used throughout the federal government. Thomas Shedd, a former Tesla engineer who was recently appointed director of the Technology Transformation Services, requested privileged access to 19 different IT systems administered by teams within TTS, according to two federal workers we spoke with who are familiar with his request. With this level of control, Shedd would be able to not only view and modify federal data, but also grant and revoke access to other people. (In a written statement, Will Powell, the acting press secretary for the General Services Administration, of which TTS is a part, said Shedd needs this level of access to rapidly identify areas for optimization and efficiencies and insisted that he is working with appropriate GSA officials to follow established protocols.)Read: The governments computing experts say they are terrifiedOver the past few days, weve talked with civil servants working for numerous agencies, all of whom requested anonymity because they fear what will happen if they lose their jobnot just to themselves, but to the functioning of the federal government. Their observations reveal the abnormal degree of power that DOGE has already achieved. Federal agencies are subject to various forms of administrative and legal oversight, but they operate separately from one another for good reasons: to support a specialized purpose and to insulate them from undue outside influence. Now they effectively roll up to Elon Musk. (Neither the White House nor DOGE responded to requests for comment for this story. Earlier this week, a White House official claimed that Musk is not the head of DOGE. He is clearly the groups functional leader.)Among the federal agencies we reported on, USAID is the only one where we could confirm that DOGE has acquired God-mode access across the entire digital system. (The Trump administration has sought to effectively shut down USAID since the inauguration.) But as Musk and his acolytes enter a growing number of federal databases and IT systems, their unfettered access at USAID offers a sense of what they might be able to do elsewhere. At NASA, for example, it could mean access to knowledge about sensitive government technologies used for defense. At the CDC, such ability could expose millions of Americans health data and allow DOGE to access labs that store deadly pathogens. At Treasury, such access would allow Musks employees to view Americans names, Social Security numbers, and financial information. It is not ridiculous to think theyd have bank-account and routing numbers for every single person in the United States, the senior USAID source said. What do you do with this information? I had to ask myself, Do I file my taxes this year or not? I had to sit and debate that. The federal government does not typically grant such wide-ranging access to a single entity, let alone one that is effectively under the control of an unelected, erratic, and politically extreme actor such as Musk. The group is working on behalf of Donald Trump, but sources we spoke with emphasized that the level of access DOGE possesses means that the organization may already be able to siphon data that Musk or his agents could hold on to forever, long after his time as a government liaison, or even after a potential falling-out with the president. One experienced government information-security contractor offered a blunt response to the God-mode situation at USAID: That sounds like our worst fears come true. The purpose of DOGEs incursions remains unclear to employees at these agencies. Musk was supposed to help improve the workings of the governmentthat is DOGEs stated purpose. But in the offices where the team is reaching internal IT systems, some are beginning to worry that he might prefer to destroy it, to take it over, or just to loot its vaults for himself.Once theyre in, theyre in, the USAID employee told us. And this is a big part of the problem in a nutshell: Access is everything, and in many cases, DOGE has it.At USAID and other agencies whose employees we spoke with, leaders explained that Musks team could copy and remove information from government servers without anybody knowing. The team could then feed this classified information into AI tools, either for training purposes or to mine the data for insights. (Members of DOGE already reportedly have put sensitive data from the Education Department into AI software.) Within USAID, DOGE has full access to human-resources informationSocial Security numbers, addresses, reputational data such as performance reviews, plus classified information and disciplinary information. The USAID source noted that DOGE can also control USAID systems that help with disbursement of funds, building-access tools, and payroll: If they wanted to change how much a person is making, they could modify that, given their access in the system. According to the employee, DOGE is also inside of an internal system for managing contracts and grants, which functions like a high-security online marketplace where USAID plans and approves billions in government spending.Inside NASA, according to one agency employee we spoke with, DOGE workers already have access to contracts, partnerships, performance reviews, classified national-security information, and satellite data, among other materials. The NASA worker told us that such knowledge could erase generations of advantage in aerospace and defense capabilities if it falls into the wrong hands. Agency technologies such as propulsion systems, novel materials, and satellites overlap with Department of Defense projects. Someone with information about NASAs thermal-protection or encryption technologies could take advantage of vulnerabilities in aerospace vehicles, for example.Derek Thompson: DOGEs reign of ineptitude USAID employees have felt more acute effects of DOGEs operations. Employees there say they have been rattled by the demands of DOGE engineers: They have walked in and said to senior staff, You have 15 minutes to do this or youre fired, the USAID senior leader told us. Now USAID staff are operating in a zero-trust environment. With its God-mode IT control at the agency, DOGE can read emails and chats, plus see whos attending which meetings. The source described employees in a recent meeting growing alarmed when transcription services seemed to turn on without warning. An employee at NASA reported similar concerns, after unfamiliar messages appeared on workstations. Were operating believing our systems are completely bugged, one person told us.The senior USAID official fears that DOGE could terminate somebody working in a conflict zone like Ukraine, Sudan, or Ethiopia from an agency system. If they lose access to their USAID laptop, phone, and accounts, for a lot of them thats their only means of communication. We are putting their lives on the line, one said. For those who have watched DOGE storm into their workplace, what is perhaps most terrifying is its attempts to scale. If DOGE were to acquire God-mode administrative access across many systems, several sources told us, that level of control could affect every citizen at home, and many American interests abroad: personal financial data, defense secrets, and more, all in the palm of Musks hand.Theres reason to believe that health information may be next. The Trump administration fired roughly 700 people at the CDC last weekend. As in other agencies, the firings will hollow out expertise but also remove obstacles to further changes. A CDC employee told us that the agencys Office of the Chief Information Officer is expecting DOGE, but no one has seen anyone yet.The individual, who has knowledge of how CDC information systems work, fears that DOGE could gain access to an abundant store of sensitive information about health and disease. This year, the CDC is supposed to roll out a central data platform for public-health surveillance and emergency response to better address new threats such as H5N1 bird flu and old ones such as measles. The new system, called the One CDC Data Platform, promises to aggregate all of the CDCs public-health data, including hundreds of thousands of daily anonymized lab tests, data from emergency-room visits, and measurements from wastewater disease-reporting sites. The design and rollout of this system were already controversial inside the agency, our source said, even before Trump and Musk came on the scene. Putting everybodys health data in one place carries risks. Although the health data the CDC houses are usually de-identified or aggregated, people with very stigmatizing illnesses could be identified by certain characteristics if the data are exposed or misused, the CDC worker said. Whats more, plenty of health data contain information that, when correlated with other data outside the system, could pinpoint specific individuals. Given all of the data that DOGE appears to be capable of siphoning from all over the government, such identification could become much easier. The CDC collects electronic health-record details from all over the country, meaning that this could affect just about everyoneincluding us, and you too.CDC systems control more than mere information about disease. At the agencys facility in Atlanta, the CDC stores the microbes that cause disease and can hold secrets to treatment. Some are relatively benign, such as strains of E. coli. Others are intrinsically dangerous, including the Ebola and Marburg viruses, and bacterium that causes tuberculosis. These materials are housed in labs with associated biosafety levels. The highest level, BSL-4, applies to only a small number of labs around the world containing dangerous and exotic microbes, as the CDC describes them, that pose a high risk of spread.Access to such labs is managed by computers, and management of those computers is local to the CDC. If DOGE got the same kind of access to CDC IT systems as it has elsewhere, would that give the group direct access to CDC facilities? Yes, those are all out of CDC level, our source at the agency told us. Does that mean that DOGE could gain direct access to BSL-4 labs? we asked. Its definitely possible, the employee said.Read: If DOGE goes nuclearOur source hoped that such a prospect would be averted. (To repeat, DOGE hasnt taken control of CDC IT systems yet, at least as far as our source knew.) But the employee also explained that the recent layoffs will reduce the agencys ability to defend against IT or security errors, on top of diminishing morale. The CDC did not respond to requests for comment about whether someone with full, local IT control could indeed grant entry to, or control over, BSL-4 labs and their contents. The risk of harm, abuse, or political revenge is clear. But simple, brazen corruption is also a concern among the federal workers we spoke with. The CDC staffer wondered if DOGEs unelected and seemingly unaccountable leadership, including Musk, might simply want to sell the public-health data the CDC collects. Democratic leaders have also expressed the worry that Musks interest in SpaceX, which has received billions of dollars in contracts from NASA over the years, creates an untenable conflict of interest. The NASA employee worried that Musk would end up reaping all of the profits of the investment that the American public put into NASAs research, which was being shared with the country. NASA holds technical specs and research data for SpaceX competitors, and insiders fear that such information will soon be compromised, too. They also worry that classified NASA R&D in areas such as quantum, biotech, and astrobiology could be stolen for private gain.A number of lawsuits have been filed seeking to limit DOGEs access, with mixed results. Meanwhile, Trump and Musk have both attacked judges who have ruled against their interests; Musk has said they should be impeached. Trump has also indicated that he might just ignore the courtsan act that would be challenging to counter, providing plenty of opportunity for the administration to get its way. Across agencies, leaders have started to step aside voluntarily. Jim Jones, head of the Food and Drug Administrations food division, resigned this week. Michelle King, who ran the Social Security Administration, stepped down too rather than carry out DOGEs wishes. The resignations may be principled, but they open the door for more compliant replacements. The request from Shedd, the former Tesla engineer, in particular, illustrates the variety of avenues and back doors that DOGE and Musks allies may have available to enter the governments systems. According to the two federal workers we spoke with about Shedds efforts, such access typically is not granted to TTS leadership and requires a specific reason and the permission of each systems owner. Shedd initially issued a blanket request, the sources told us, and is now attempting to bypass the individual system owners by seeking permission from other officials, circumventing standard security procedures. He also had not completed a background check, which is usually required for such access, at least as of when he first made the request, according to our sources. How much access Shedd has been granted remains uncertain. This is the DOGE playbook: There are no norms to be respected, and everything is up for grabs. Once the damage is done, it will be difficult to remedy, especially if DOGE staffers can themselves grant or remove access to others at their discretion.Musk and DOGEs first month has been so chaotic, their incursions so haphazard, that assessing what has even happened is difficult. DOGE claims to be improving the government, but the agency workers we spoke with feel that they are being hacked instead. So it is worth stepping back to note the most basic fact: No good reason or case can be made for one person or entity to have this scope of access to this many government agencies containing this much sensitive information. Even in one government office, full administrative access to all systems is the rarest privilege. In the aggregate, across the whole of the government, it would be unfathomable.Explore More Topics

Seven fresh roles were shared in total, with the likes of Cyberpunk sequel associate game director Paweł Sasko boosting them in an effort to say 'Hey, come work with me'. As ever, unless you're already in game development, odds are there are few of them you're qualified for or will find interesting, but there is one potentually interesting deal in the listing for a lead encounter designer."Work in close collaboration with the systems design team to create the most realistic and reactive crowd system in any game to date," reads one of this gig's daily responsibilities. It's not that surprising to see CD Projekt looking to up its game in terms of crowds with Cyberpunk 2 - given random NPC behaviour and how they interacted with things like police chases were arguably one of the base game's weaker points at launch (to be clear, I mean unnamed street-walkers there, the game obviously did a lot of cool stuff with its quest character encounters and dialogue). It's got fans on Reddit debating whether the studio might be able to top what the likes of Rockstar Games has accomplished in terms of open-world detail with the likes of Red Dead Redemption 2.They're not asking whether Cyberpunk 2077's sequel will have horse balls that dynamically grow and shrink, but f**k it, that's very much what I'm now wondering. It does, however, seem like the majority of even the hardcore CD Projekt stans on the Cyberpunk subreddit think the publisher will have a tough time blowing away what Rockstar has done in terms of NPCs, and could raise the game on even further when it drops a little game called GTA 6 later this year.Do you think Cyberpunk's sequel will end up topping anything we've ever seen before crowd system wise? • ValarAtomics comes out of stealth with $19M and a pilot reactor site
    techcrunch.com
Companies developing small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) have raised more than $1.5 billion in the past year, as tech companies hunger for power to train AI models and governments decide to commit to the industry. For example, X-energy raised $700 million this month, and Paris-based Newcleo raised $151 million last year, and one would be remiss to not mention the $700 million invested into Oklo, NuScale and Nano Nuclear for similar projects in the U.S. While nuclear fusion still looks relatively far away, SMRs are todays hot atomic property. So its significant that SMR startup ValarAtomics has raised $19 million in a seed funding round to develop its first test reactor. The financing was led by Riot Ventures, with AlleyCorp, Initialized Capital, Day One Ventures and Steel Atlas participating.Valars SMR technology is based on a helium-cooled, high-temperature gas reactor. These will be built out of a nuclear equivalent of a gigafactory (where batteries are built), except Valar calls them gigasites.By effectively creating a production line of SMRs, Valar hopes to drastically reduce the costs associated with building nuclear reactors, which are traditionally bespoke projects.Valars co-founder and CEO, Isaiah Taylor, told TechCrunch that the constraint on building reactors isnt the technology as much as how its deployed. He hopes Valars gigafactory approach could fix that by being industrial instead of artisanal. The company plans to build hundreds of SMRs at predominantly off-grid sites to power data centers and industrial plants. It has an initial contract with the Philippines Nuclear Research Institute to build a reactor in the country. Under the contract,Valarplans to pilot a test-scale reactor, and build two full-scale reactors before the first integrated reactor comes online. Were going to make the first one, the second one, the third one, and that will organically evolve into a factory, he said.Valars underlying technology uses helium gas to reach temperatures up to 900C triple that of conventional nuclear reactors. This means Valar could also produce hydrogen efficiently and combine it with captured CO2 to create low-carbon synthetic fuels for vehicles and infrastructure. If you can get a nuclear reactor that hot, you can produce hydrogen very cheaply, and you unlock all sorts of things. One of those things being synthetic fuels. We want to be able to make that process cheap and make the reactors cheap, too, said Taylor. We designed, engineered, and constructed our thermal test unit in a period of about 10 months. Its possible after all, the first nuclear reactor ever was built in eight months, in 1943, he added.Taylor, whose grandfather was, coincidentally,a nuclear physicist on the Manhattan Project, dropped out of high school at 16, and went on to study software systems as well as found startups. The companys technical efforts are led by its chief nuclear officer,Mark Mitchell (the former president of modular reactor firm Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC), and leader of the worlds first small modular reactor project at South Africas Pebble Bed Modular Reactor). The startups team also has several folks from USNC, including its head of mechanical engineering, Willem van Rooyen. While the companys plans are ambitious, there seem to be ample tailwinds for such nuclear projects. TheU.S. Inflation Reduction Acthas unlocked private investment into clean energy infrastructure, while China isalso investing $440 billionin new nuclear plants. Plus,14 of the worlds largest bankshave expressed support for tripling nuclear energy by 2050.

  • ICON raises $56M in a latest Series C funding round
    3dprintingindustry.com
Texas-based construction 3D printing company ICON has secured $56 million in Series C funding, following a layoff announcement last month.Co-led by Norwest Venture Partners and Tiger Global Management, this funding round marked the first close with an additional $75 million in funding expected. Existing investors, including CAZ Investments, LENX, Modern Ventures, Oakhouse Partners, and Overmatch Ventures, also participated. Having previously invested in the company, Will Hurd, a former Congressman and Presidential candidate, has joined ICONs board of directors. While ICON has not disclosed its current valuation or whether it has changed since previous rounds, the company has now raised more than $500 million in total funding according to TechCrunch.A large portion of the new capital is being allocated toward Phoenix, ICONs line of multi-story 3D printers, with plans to make the technology available to builders. The company has also developed a new low-carbon building material designed for use in multi-story construction.Even as it moves toward equipping builders with its technology, the Texas-based firm isnt stepping away from direct construction. The company still plans to take on select projects across residential, hospitality, and affordable housing, as well as work with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).Interior aspects of ICONs 3D printed homes. Back in 2022, the construction company raised $185 million, extending its $207 million Series B funding round from the previous year.Led by Tiger Global, this funding came from existing backers and pushed ICONs total funding to $461 million, with its valuation reportedly nearing $2 billion. While ICON didnt comment on the raise, its previous funding rounds focused on scaling operations, growing its team, and advancing research and development (R&D) in construction 3D printing. In 2018, the company pulled in its first funding round valuing $9 million to construct sustainable 3D printed houses around the world. One of the recent ICONs housing projects include eight single-family homes in Wimberley Springs, 40 miles south of Austin, Texas.Designed using ICONs AlphaBeta and TexNext collections, these homes range from 2,800 to 4,000 sq. ft. with four to five bedrooms. Built with high thermal performance concrete and low-carbon materials, they meet EnergyStar standards and offer enhanced energy efficiency. Equipped with smart thermostats, video doorbells, and durable 3D printed walls, these homes are available for pre-sale, starting in the upper $800,000s.In December 2022, ICON landed a $57.2 million NASA contract under Phase III of the SBIR program to push forward Project Olympus, a plan to build lunar structures using 3D printing and lunar regolith. The project involved testing the system in space and studying lunar materials to fine-tune construction methods. As part of NASAs Artemis Program, the goal was to lay the groundwork for a sustainable human presence on the Moon.NASAs Vulcan 3D printer installed at the NASA Johnson Space Center. Photo via ICON.Investment in construction continuesAs the potential of construction 3D printing is being realized, many companies have started investing in the technology. Last year, Amazons Climate Pledge Fund joined Holcim and British International Investment (BII) in a Series A-1 investment round for 14Trees, a company focused on 3D printing for construction.Although the amount remains unknown, the investment is said to support the deployment of advanced 3D printers, software, and sustainable materials to develop low-carbon data centers, large-scale buildings, and utilities across Europe and the U.S.Two years ago, Mighty Buildings raised $52 million in funding to accelerate its expansion into fastest-growing construction markets, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. In addition, the company also sought to scale U.S. production to meet rising demand for sustainable housing. This round was co-led by Waed Ventures, backed by Saudi Aramco, and BOLD Capital Partners, with nearly 20 investors, including Khosla Ventures and South Koreas KB-Badgers, participating.What3D printing trendsshould you watch out for in 2025?How is thefuture of 3D printingshaping up?To stay up to date with the latest 3D printing news, dont forget to subscribe to the 3D Printing Industry newsletter or follow us on Twitter, or like our page on Facebook. While youre here, why not subscribe to our Youtube channel?
