The sets are selected to reflect a variety of price points, materials, and styles, and we pride ourselves in giving each set first-hand, real-world use. What Is Bamboo Viscose Versus Bamboo Rayon?Good question, and one we know a lot of shoppers might have. When it comes to the world of linens, bamboo fibers are made from the bamboo plant, which requires far less water than cotton and regrows quickly, so bamboo sheets are often considered one of the more eco-friendly options available. Bamboo fabric can come in a variety of blends and weaves that will change the texture, softness, breathability, and general propensity for wrinkling.Bamboo viscose is made from a pulp that is then turned into fibers, while rayon is made of cellulose spun into the fibers. Lyocell is also made of pulp as well and the manufacturing process is considered the least wasteful of the three. All are antimicrobial, soft to the touch, and absorbent.Depending on if and what they are blended with, they can take on more linen- or cotton-like properties; generally, viscose is considered to be softer than lyocell. Twill weave and sateen weave are the most common options in bamboo sheets, and while sateen weave is softer, twill weave is stronger.

  • DOGE Now Has Access to the Top US Cybersecurity Agency
    www.wired.com
Edward Coristine, a 19-year-old engineer with Elon Musks so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) known as Big Balls, is now on staff at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), WIRED has confirmed. He is joined by another member of the DOGE team, 38-year-old software engineer Kyle Schutt, who is now also on the CISA staff, according to a government source.CISA referred WIRED to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), of which its a component agency, when reached for comment. DHS did not immediately reply to a request for comment.Coristinebriefly an intern for Musks brain-computer interface company, Neuralink, as WIRED has reportedhas been working his way through numerous federal agencies and departments as a DOGE operative since January. He has been tracked at the General Services Administration (GSA), the Office of Personnel Management, the State Department, and FEMA. At States Bureau of Diplomatic Technology, he potentially had access to systems containing sensitive information about diplomats and many sources and spies around the world who provide the U.S. government with intelligence and expertise. As the journalist Marisa Kabas was first to report, he has now moved to CISA, a division of DHS. He is listed in the staff directory as a senior advisor.A second DOGE worker, Schutt, has also joined Coristine at CISA. Schutt has reportedly also been at the GSA. Prior to his work with DOGE, he worked on the launch of WinRed, a fundraising platform for Republicans that helped the party raise $1.8 billion during the 2024 election campaigns. Its not clear yet what level of access Coristine might have to data and networks at CISA, but the agency, which is responsible for the defense of civilian federal government networks and works closely with critical infrastructure owners around the country, stores a lot of sensitive and critical security information on its networks. This includes information about software vulnerabilities, breaches, and network risk assessments conducted for local and state election offices. Since 2018, CISA has helped state and local election offices around the country assess vulnerabilities in their networks and help secure them. CISA also works with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Security Agency to notify victims of breaches and process information about software vulnerabilities before the information becomes public.Got a Tip?Are you a current or former government employee who wants to talk about what's happening? We'd like to hear from you. Using a nonwork phone or computer, contact the reporter securely on Signal at Kimz.42.Coristine, as WIRED has previously reported, worked briefly in 2022 for Path Network, a network monitoring firm known for hiring reformed blackhat hackers. According to security journalist Brian Krebs, an account once associated with him was also previously linked with a loosely-formed cybercriminal community known as The Com, whose members have been responsible for various hacking operations in the last few years, including the hack of numerous Snowflake accounts. Coristine has not been associated with the Snowflake breaches, but as WIRED has reported, an account that has been associated with him did appear to suggest the owner of the account was seeking help to conduct a Distributed Denial of Service attacka criminal technique that involves launching extensive traffic at a domain to disable it and prevent legitimate traffic from reaching it. Krebs also reported that Path had fired Coristine for allegedly leaking internal company documents to a competitor. The Washington Post reported last week that Coristine had been assigned to the DHS as a senior advisor, but didnt indicate what part of the sprawling agency he had joined.Whats the point of fighting cybercrime if were just going to give access for government networks to people with cybercriminal gang affiliations? says a cybersecurity researcher who tracks cybercriminal groups.

  • Solar crushed 2024, but emissions were up as industry used more natural gas
    techcrunch.com
The U.S. invested a record-breaking $338 billion in the energy transition last year, according to a new report, but it wasnt quite enough to lessen the countrys overall carbon emissions.Solar took the lead, adding 49 gigawatts of new electrical generating capacity in 2024, far more than any other technology. Solar and wind together now represent nearly a quarter of electricity demand and nearly 10% of all energy consumption in the U.S., said the report, released Thursday by the BloombergNEF and the Business Council for Sustainable Energy. At the same time, demand for natural gas was up 1.3%, enough to nudge U.S. carbon emissions higher by half a percent. The uptick was driven primarily by industrial users and power plants that burn natural gas, primarily to generate power or heat. The new report lands at a time when the U.S. is at a crossroads. The countrys carbon emissions are down nearly 16% since 2005, with power-related emissions down over 40% over the same period. The U.S. has also gotten more productive with the energy it uses, generating 2.3% more economic output last year for a given amount of energy consumed. At the same time, report from Grid Strategies, the U.S. could use 15.8% more electricity by 2029. Which technology supplies that electricity could determine the countrys impact on climate change for decades to come.Skyrocketing demand from data centers is the single biggest driver of new electricity demand. Tech companies have been investing in massive new data centers to power cloud operations and fuel their AI ambitions. The pace of additions has quickened to the point that half of all new AI servers could be underpowered by 2027.Such forecasts have nudged tech companies to secure power sources for the coming years. Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have all announced significant investments in nuclear power, backing startups like Kairos and X-Energy while simultaneously reviving old nuclear reactors given they do not directly release carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gas emissions. They are also continuing to add renewable power to their portfolios. This year alone, to meet the growing demands of its power-hungry data centers, Amazon has entered into agreements with energy producers to add 476 megawatts, while Meta bought 200 megawatts in one deal and 595 megawatts in another. The deals have been dominated by solar, mirroring the trend nationwide. Thats in part because the technology is inexpensive, and new solar farms are fast to bring online. For power-crunched tech companies, cost and speed matter.Efficiency-minded consumption might further help tech giants, by wringing more power out of the grid without needing dramatically more capacity. A study published last week suggests that subtle tweaks like scheduling computing tasks at times of lower power demand or shifting them to regions with more capacity could unlock 76 gigawatts of headroom in the U.S. Thats as much as 10% of peak power demand nationwide.Clever adaptations like those might be required if the U.S. is to keep pace with global competitors. Despite record outlays on the energy transition, the U.S. still lags China in deploying capital. Where the U.S. spent 1.3% of GDP on the transition last year, China spent 4.4%.

  • New Holographic TVAM 3D Printing Method Accelerates Production
    3dprintingindustry.com
A team of Europe-based researchers has developed a novel holographic 3D Printing method. The group created a modified Tomographic Volumetric Additive Manufacturing (TVAM) technique capable of shortening 3D printing times to mere seconds while increasing efficiency.Unlike conventional layer-by-layer 3D printing methods, TVAM can create entire objects in one shot by shining light patterns into liquid resin, which solidifies when the light intensity is high enough. While this approach can fabricate support-free, micro-scale parts within tens of seconds, it is highly inefficient. This is because under 1% of the encoded light reaches the resin vial. Conventional TVAM can also lead to unwanted distortions and poor resolution due to light blurring and projection artifacts. To address these limitations, the researchers developed HoloVAM, a new technique that uses a 3D hologram instead of conventional volumetric light projections. This approach reportedly boosts light efficiency by 20 times, resulting in faster and more accurate 3D printing. According to their paper, published in Nature Communications, HoloVAM successfully fabricated several millimeter-scale objects in under 60 seconds with fine details as small as 31 micrometers. The scientists behind the discovery are based between the Laboratory of Applied Photonic Devices at Switzerlands EPFL and the University of Southern Denmarks Centre for Photonics Engineering. They believe this new approach offers value for medical bioprinting applications, thanks to HoloVAMs use of self-healing beams. These can generate and retain their shape when passing through materials, which is particularly valuable when 3D printing with cell-laden bio-resins and hydrogels. The researchers holographic 3D printing technology. Image via Nature Communications.Holographic 3D printing enhances speed and efficiency A key challenge in existing TVAM approaches is efficiency. Most light is lost, wasting energy and reducing 3D printing accuracy. To tackle this, the researchers used a hologram tiling technique called HoloTile. Invented by University of Southern Denmark professor Jesper Glckstad, this approach breaks the 3D hologram of the desired part into smaller tiled sections. It works by projecting multiple detailed holograms into the resin, which solidifies where the light is most intense.A key challenge in holographic projections is speckle-noise, unwanted patterns caused by laser light interference. To eliminate this, the HoloTile system rapidly displays holographic patterns up to 22,000 per second. Additionally, the laser beams phase is adjusted to break up noise patterns, while specialized Bessel and vortex beams provide more stable light distribution. Unlike traditional 3D printing, which constructs objects layer by layer, HoloTile leverages a rotating resin veil. This continuous motion shifts the speckle pattern, naturally blurring out noise and resulting in smooth edges and fine details. The researchers tested their novel method using a commercial polyacrylate resin and a hydrogel with embedded cells to 3D print a range of high-resolution objects. These included 3D Benchy models, microscopic pillars, and lattice structures.Small details like the Benchys sharp bow, hollow cabin, and chimney were well preserved. One Benchy test even showcased a 28.6 times increase in light efficiency, compared to conventional methods. Additional test prints, including a cylinder with a hole, a Bucky Ball, and a Poporo artifact, were printed in 37.03 seconds and 29.88 seconds, respectively. They exhibited impressive quality and surface finish, confirming the holographic methods versatility. The technique was also successfully applied to hydrogels containing living cells. The researchers found that using Bessel and Vortex self-healing beams improved 3D print quality and penetration depth in these soft, scattering materials. Additionally, unlike conventional methods, no digital correction of projection patterns was needed, highlighting its value for biomedical applications.3D Benchy fabricated using holographic 3D printing. Photo via Nature Communications.Research unlocks 3D bioprinting breakthroughs3D bioprinting is a key focus among academics, with many institutions working to optimize this valuable process. Indeed, the HoloVAM team is not the only group pursuing volumetric printing for biomedical applications.Scientists at UMC Utrecht previously made several key innovations in this field. These include creating biologically functional regions in 3D printed cells, optimizing bioprinted cells with granular gels, and 3D printing blood vessels using volumetric bioprinting and melt electrowriting. The team hopes these breakthroughs will pave the way for expanded clinical use of 3D bioprinting.Elsewhere, researchers from Collins BioMicrosystems Laboratory at the University of Melbourne introduced a new 3D bioprinting approach called Dynamic Interface Printing (DIP). Unlike layer-by-layer approaches, DIP uses acoustic waves to guide cells into precise configurations, allowing complex, 3D printed human tissues to be fabricated in seconds. This reportedly offers the potential for customized, high-fidelity tissue structures that offer value across regenerative medicine and disease modeling applications.Who won the 2024 3D Printing Industry Awards?Subscribe to the 3D Printing Industry newsletter to keep up with the latest 3D printing news. You can also follow us on LinkedIn, and subscribe to the 3D Printing Industry Youtube channel to access more exclusive content.Featured image shows a 3D Benchy fabricated using holographic 3D printing. • A duplex by Ultramoderne in Providence, Rhode Island, offers a contemporary take on cheapskate architecture
    www.archpaper.com
Architecture and design firm Ultramoderne recently asked the question: What would Frank Gehrys 1980s concept of cheapskate architecture look like right now? Coprincipal Yasmin Vobis elaborated: With construction as expensive as it is today, how can standard construction methods be at the core of a progressive approach to architecture? And how can this attitude allow architecture to be more generally accessible to the public at large? The studio provides one answer with its latest two-family residential project, Friendship. Ultramoderne applied ingenuity and enlisted community collaboration in the development of a new sustainable blueprint that can be used toward future projects. The 4,300-square-foot duplex occupies a previously vacant lot next to I-95 on Friendship Street in central Providence. Although similar in size to the areas surrounding triple-decker homes, Friendship grabs the attention of passersby with its black corrugated-metal facade. The sleek exterior is a quiet base on which the windows and light monitors are placed across the building. The latter offer a unique anatomical view of the buildings structural bones as they exhibit the wood framing behind translucent acrylic panels. In one location, the device is used to reveal a hint of the bright pink fiberglass to the street. These touches offer a playful, abstract sensibility to Friendship while also contributing to the buildings high R-value.Friendship is similar in size to the areas surrounding triple-decker homes. (Courtesy Ultramoderne)Ultramoderne coprincipal Aaron Forrest shared with AN that Friendship began when he received a tip from the project builder that the design team could obtain discarded materials from local construction projects and use them for Friendship. Although Forrest was initially skeptical, this idea ultimately spurred the projects success. In the end, all of the wood flooring, tile, and skylights were sourced this way, and it allowed us to get a much higher level of finish in the project than the budget would otherwise have allowed, he explained. The newly gained experience and strategy from Friendship will be used for future endeavors, Forrest added, including a new 12-unit multifamily project with the same developer. Friendships black corrugated metal facade, with a peek at the pink insulation. (Courtesy Ultramoderne)Vobiswho teaches at UC Berkeley, as does Forrestreflected that the process of creating Friendship changed how Ultramoderne designs. We had to reexamine the basic ingredients of architectureits organization and typical construction methods in this cityin order to find a generosity in the spatial design while also keeping things as cost effective as possible, she said. This challenge and constant exchange with the client was ultimately also the most rewarding part of the project and has made us rethink the way we approach projects in the future. Ultramoderne, with structural engineer Brett Schneider, also explored the creative potential of mixed-material architecture through studio courses, and the results were recently published by Birkhauser in the book Heterogeneous Constructions. The team used discarded material for skylights, wood floors, and more.(Courtesy Ultramoderne)Translucent acrylic panels offer a glimpse of the wood framing. (Courtesy Ultramoderne)All over Providence, the phrase What Cheer can be found in businesses and on government paraphernalia like the citys seal. It stems from the original greetingWhat Cheer, Netop!extended from the Narragansett Native Americans to city founder Roger Williams in the early 1600s. Translated from Narragansett and English, it means, Hi, neighbor or Greetings, friend. Ultramodernes Friendship takes up the kind part of this ethos. The sensibility is even formal, as seen in the loosely symmetrical layout of the two homes mirrored across a demising wall. Below, they share a garage, and above, a rooftop terrace, which encourages engagement among residents.(Courtesy Ultramoderne)Ultramoderne created a loosely symmetrical layout for the two homes, as seen in the long section. (Courtesy Ultramoderne)Like the future neighbors of this Friendship project who might encounter each other on the outdoor deck, sometimes we need a nudge to make things happen. In the case of Friendship, a little push in a different direction went a long way and ultimately answered Ultramodernes initial question: Innovative architecture is still possible in todays economic climateit just requires a new approach.Project SpecificationsDesign architect: UltramoderneArchitect of record: UltramoderneStructural engineer: Boulay ConsultingCivil engineer: MJF Engineering AssociatesGeneral contractor: BSPVL ConstructionWindows: DoorwinGlass: ACRYLITE Resist

    www.archpaper.com
    M. Paul Friedberga pioneering landscape architect, artist, planner, and educatordied on February 15 at age 93. News of Friedbergs passing was shared by The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF). Charles Birnbaum, TCLF president and CEO, interned for Friedberg in the 1980s, and the pair had been close ever since. In describing Friedbergs legacy, Birnbaum said the late visionary was serious about the idea of childs play and an unrepentant believer in the virtue of cities when U.S. cities were at their nadir.Friedberg was renowned for his tenure at City College, where he established the Urban Landscape Architecture program. Hes also remembered for his work at public housing sites in New York, and St. Louiss Pruitt-Igoe on spaces for children.Friedberg was born in 1931 in Brooklyn but spent his childhood in Pennsylvania. He went on to earn a degree in horticulture from Cornell University. Friedberg started his eponymous New Yorkbased practice in 1958.Friedberg enthusiastically embraced the participatory design movement of the late 1960s, Michael Allen a history professor at West Virginia University, told AN after the landscape architects death.Aerial view of Friedbergs Jacob Riis Plaza (Courtesy M. Paul Friedberg & Partners)One of Friedbergs first projects was at Pruitt-Igoe, the canonical St. Louis public housing development by Minoru Yamasaki. Friedberg worked alongside community activist Macler Shepard; he was brought onto to help save the development in the mid-1960s, almost a decade after construction ended, when the project was in dire straights. In his essay Incomplete by Design: Reconsidering the Life and Death Pruitt-Igoe, Allen notes that 70 percent of Pruitt-Igoes roughly 12,000 residents were under the age of 12. Together with Shepard, Friedberg interviewed children at Pruitt-Igoe to inform the ultimate design for new outdoor spaces.Allen told AN that what made Pruitt-Igoe stand out was how Friedberg treated children there as clients. Friedberg listened to their needs and developing playground models with their input, Allen said. His work led to the construction of well-used adventure playgrounds in 1967, an under appreciated bright spot for the troubled housing project amid its decline.Friedbergs master plan for Pruitt-Igoes open areas delivered a 250-seat amphitheater, and six playgrounds replete with wooden modular furniture. Later, in 1971, late St. Louis architect Charles Fleming was tasked with another master plan to save Pruitt-Igoe, nevertheless one that ended in vainPruitt-Igoe was demolished in 1976.Fountain at Peavey Plaza in Minneapolis (Jim Winstead Jr./Wikimedia Commons/CC BY-SA 2.0)Prior to Pruitt-Igoe, Friedberg had garnered acclaim for his work in Harlem at Carver Houses, and at Jacob Riis Houses in Lower East Side. Today, Jacob Riis Plaza is widely considered among Friedbergs best works. Then came Peavey Plaza in Minneapolis, and Central Parks Billy Johnson Playground. At Jacob Riis Plaza, Friedberg said he employed something he called a total play environment, a space that encouraged physical, emotional and sensory exercise and participation. Landscape architect Peter Walker said in 2004 that what Jacob Riis Plaza was to landscape architecture, Mies van der Rohes Barcelona Pavilion was to architecture. Like Mies Barcelona Pavilion it was unlike anything seen before in the modern city, Walker said.Later, Friedberg helped revitalize New Yorks Battery Park City; he also designed projects in Canada, Japan, and elsewhere. He was awarded the ASLA Medal in 2015.Friedberg is survived by his wife, Doris Shahar, and three children.

  • Holyhood Cemetery Chapel // 1857
    buildingsofnewengland.com
Holyhood Cemetery in Brookline, Massachusetts, was laid out in 1857 under the direction of FatherJoseph M. Finotti, pastor of Assumption Parish , which included Brookline and Brighton. The cemetery reflects the mid-19th century influence of the Rural Cemetery movement and the romantic landscape cemetery planning begun at Cambridges Mount Auburn Cemetery in the 1830s. A plan of the cemetery was drawn up by Shedd & Edson and published in August 1857. It shows curvilinear avenues and paths named after former bishops of Boston and Biblical figures. All were welcome to be buried except those who died in a state of Drunkenness, Duel, or by self-destruction, unbaptized, non-Catholic, or otherwise opposed to the Catholic Church. In the 1857 Shedd & Edson plan forHolyhood Catholic Cemetery, a chapel was located at the center on the hill shown in a small drawing on the edge of the plan. Known as St. Josephs Chapel, the stone building was designed byPatrick Keely, the successful and influential New York architect of many mid-19thcentury Catholic churches. The chapel would be dedicated in 1862. Decades later,a cemetery office was plannedand built across Heath Street from the cemetery gates, but was demolished sometime in the 20thcentury. The cemetery grew and it along with the mid-19thcentury chapel, has been lovingly maintained to this day.
