  • Two Point Museum review: British humour and Aardman-vibes make this better than school trip
    www.dailystar.co.uk
Two Point Museum may see the well-worn formula of its predecessors continue, but there's no denying it's a fun, relaxed management sim that will take hours out of your dayTech15:20, 25 Feb 2025Two Point Museum is a fun, if familiar, management sim(Image: Two Point Studios/SEGA)Have you ever had a dream of being a museum curator? No, me neither, but if its anything like running one in Two Point Museum, I reckon Im due a career change. The third entry in the Two Point series of management titles maintains the status quo as far as accessible systems and British humour go, but it adds fun new wrinkles that make it an absolute time sink. There's not a huge amount you haven't seen before, though, which may disappoint.Seeing all of this in motion will bring a smile to anyone's face(Image: Two Point Studios/SEGA)If youve spent time in Two Point County before, the good news is it feels like coming home but it might be a tad too familiar for some.Everything is just where you left it, whether youre coming from Two Point Hospital or Two Point Campus, and while its visuals stay pleasantly cartoonish, Ive come to love the commitment Two Point Studios has to its work.Everything, from guests to attractions, to staff animations has a sort of Aardman Animation vibe to it that means you could go from either of the prior two games and not feel like youve skipped a beat. Add to that the iconic tannoy announcer and her sarcastic barbs, and a slick UI that means everything feels just a click or two away, and youve got one of the cosiest experiences of 2025 so far.Visuals are cartoony, but detailedThats not to say theres nothing new here. Museums offer more open spaces, and that means you can leave the floorplan at home. Instead, youll be placing exhibits, and beautifying them with thematic garnish, like plants and standees to help nudge people to them.Exhibits are all appropriately silly, with the same British humour thats served the last two games well, and youll need to keep cleaning them if theyre to inspire donations in your well-placed coffers.Must've taken a big ol' helicopter to drop this offOne of the biggest new features this time around is the inclusion of Expeditions. After all, how else are you going to stock up your museum with priceless artifacts? These require sending staff away, often for days at a time, but come with added risk. They visit the museums helipad and are whisked away on an adventure, with more expeditions unlocking more of the map in a satisfying metagame that then leads to additional options.A successful expedition brings back a sparkly (or dusty) new exhibit for you to showcase, but its not without risks. Staffers can fall into tar pits, meaning theyre extra slow when they return. They can even go missing entirely, and youll need to balance the need for new exhibits versus keeping things running smoothly.Exhibitions are as silly as you'd imagine from Two PointTheres an element of surprise every time a crate is dropped off on the landing pad, too. Open it up, and you might find a great new exhibit that brings visitors from far and wide. Or, you might get a duplicate you can sell or convert to increased knowledge for the one you already have on display.Naturally, different museums have different themings like the science-focused Bungle Wasteland, but theres nothing quite as fun as the Wizarding School of Two Point Campus, or the alien encounters from the Two Point Hospital DLC. Its not a bad thing, but the game suffers a tad because what came before felt like it had more licence to go wild.Article continues belowFar from a stuffy school trip, Two Point Museum is a little familiar but that also adds to its cosiness. Its the kind of game that has you preparing for just one more expedition before its 4 AM and you need to get to bed, and I love it for that.Reviewed on PC. Review access provided by the publisher.

  • PS Plus March 2025 Essential games set to include Robocop, Atomic Heart and Assassin's Creed?
    www.dailystar.co.uk
The PlayStation Plus games for March 2025 are being revealed in just a few hours, but fans have been piecing together predictions for the biggest new additions for Essential playersTech14:55, 25 Feb 2025Updated 16:41, 25 Feb 2025PlayStation Plus is bringing more new games to Sony console owners(Image: Sony )PS Plus subscribers at the Extra tier got some fresh new games to play this month including Star Wars Jedi Survivor, but fans will no doubt be itching to see what's new for Essential subscribers. It's been a busy month for Sony, what with a big PSN outage and a State of Play event, but fans will be hoping for some big games to see them through after last month saw Payday 3, High on Life and Pac-Man World Re-Pac arrive. In the absence of any leaks, PlayStation Plus subscribers have taken to the service's subreddit to plot out their predictions, and some are pretty plausible indeed.Over on the PlayStation Plus subreddit, fans are hopeful we'll see RoboCop: Rogue City or Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden although others suspect those are more likely to be included for March's 'Extra' members.Other requests are Atomic Heart, Psychonauts 2, and Hades, but it's Assassin's Creed that comes up most often. While PS5 owners will seemingly be happy with Mirage's stealthier entry in the long-running series, it's perhaps more likely Valhalla arrives. The game is the last big, RPG-like Assassin's Creed release before the Japan-set Shadows, so some are positing that it'll be used to entice fans back.Naturally, some fans are predicting games they've purchased recently, which does often seem to be the case. Games in that category include Resident Evil: Village, Robocop: Rogue City, and Mortal Kombat 1.The PS Plus Essential Games for March are expected tomorrow, February 26, at 4:30PM UK time.As for when you can play them, get your console storage freed up by March 4. The games are usually available by around 10am, although there's no official timing on that.Don't forget, you won't be able to download last month's games for free after the new games cycle in so grab Payday 3, High on Life and Pac-Man World Re-Pac while you can.Article continues belowFor the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.

  • Starbucks Quietly Phases Out Plastic Cups at 580 Stores. Heres Why.
    gizmodo.com
Joseph Winters, Grist Published February 25, 2025 | Comments (0) | Plastic cups aren't recyclable, according to environmentalists. Yellyana/Shutterstock Starbucks customers across hundreds of locations in the United States started their weeks off with a surprise: Their beloved Frappuccinos and iced espresso drinks served in paper cups, not plastic. The Seattle-based coffee company announced this week that about 580 of its stores had begun replacing its cold drinks cups typically made out of polypropylene,a type of rigid plastic with paper versions lined with a thin layer of bioplastic for liquid resistance. A company spokesperson declined to provide a list of stores affected by the change, but said Starbucks wants to comply with the growing number of local ordinances restricting the distribution of single-use plastics. Some advocacy groups, however, have suggested that the transition away from polypropylene plastic cups is more connected to Starbucks own sustainability targets specifically, a goal the company set last year to make all of its packaging reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2030. The companys continued use of the plastic, which is neither reusable or compostable, seemed to hinge on the idea that the cups could technically fall under the recyclable category. Jan Dell, an independent chemical engineer and founder of the nonprofit The Last Beach Cleanup, says theyre not, and that Starbucks is now acknowledging it. This is a clear admission that polypropylene cups are not recyclable or, at least, that they dont get recycled in practice, Dell told Grist. Dells conclusion is based, in part, on an effort she spearheaded last year to see what happens to Starbucks plastic cups when deposited in the chains in-store recycling bins. She and a partner, Susan Keefe now with the nonprofit Beyond Plastics placed tracking devices in empty Starbucks cups across Southern California, dropped the cups off in the chains recycling bins, and followed their movements after they were picked up by waste trucks. In almost all cases, the trackers went to a landfill or an incinerator rather than a recycling center. Her investigation was repeated on a larger scale by CBS News, which tracked cups dropped into 57 Starbucks recycling bins across the country. Of the 36 trackers that produced reliable location information, 32 last pinged at locations that appeared to be landfills, incinerators, or waste transfer stations. Just four pinged at locations that appeared to be material recovery facilities, the places where used plastics are sorted for recycling. A Starbucks spokesperson told Grist that the companys polypropylene cups are recyclable in many locations where there is local infrastructure. But it is unclear where such infrastructure exists. Last year, CBS News reported that Starbucks was only able to list one facility that turns polypropylene plastic cups into new products, KW Plastics in Alabama. A 2022 Greenpeace report found that this facility has the capacity to recycle only about 1 percent of the United States total polypropylene waste, and may not accept polypropylene waste from states outside the Southeast due to transportation costs. Another limiting factor is the high rate of contamination with other types of plastic, or liquids and food residue. Polypropylene bales from California, for example, have an average contamination rate of 31 percent far higher than the 2 percent contamination rate KW Plastics says it accepts. KW Plastics did not respond to Grists request for comment. (An industry group told Grist there are several more polypropylene recycling facilities in the U.S., but a Grist review of the list it sent found inconsistencies: One facility said it doesnt accept bales of polypropylene, for instance, and another appeared to not yet be operating.) Considering all of the 160,000 tons of plastic cups and plates produced in the U.S. in 2018 the last year for which federal data is available about 81 percent was landfilled and 19 percent was burned. That leaves roughly 0 percent for recycling: a negligible amount, as the Environmental Protection Agency puts it. Dell said the high-profile investigations embarrassed Starbucks and may have contributed to its move away from polypropylene cups. The company knows its customers want to feel good about their cold drink or their hot drink cups, she said. Consumers do not want to feel guilty. Lisa Ramsden, a senior oceans campaigner for Greenpeace, said Starbucks may also be trying to get ahead of anti-plastic regulations in California, which are expected to ban certain types of plastic in the coming years. Already, the state requires the substantiation of recyclability labels like the ubiquitous chasing arrows symbol, imprinted on Starbucks polypropylene cups and advertised on its in-store recycling bins. Companies that want to label their products as recyclable in the Golden State have to maintain written records explaining why they believe the recycling claim is true, and showing that those products are widely collected and turned into new products within California. A Starbucks spokesperson said the companys polypropylene cups are compliant with applicable consumer protection laws and declined to provide additional evidence that the cups are recycled. They said that recycling is complex and challenging, and that the companys goal is always to reduce the amount of plastic in our waste stream. Along with the move toward compostable paper cups, Starbucks, which is navigating a flurry of changes as its new CEO attempts to improve the companys image and bottom line, says it is making ceramic mugs available for in-store dining and allowing more customers to order drinks in their own reusable cups. As for Starbucks plastic cups, its unclear whether and when they will be phased out from the more than 16,000 locations in the U.S. that are still offering them. Last April, the company said it had redesigned its single-use plastic cups to use up to 20 percent less plastic a move that would allegedly keep more than 13.5 million pounds of plastic from landfills each year. According to Dell, Starbucks move away from plastic cups is a crack in the wall of the campaign to promote polypropylene recycling particularly from The Recycling Partnership, an industry-backed nonprofit that in 2020 launched an initiative called the Polypropylene Recycling Coalition to ensure the long-term viability of polypropylene plastic. As of December, The Recycling Partnership said it had distributed $22 million in grants to recycling facilities to improve the collection and sorting of polypropylene. The organizations chief policy officer, Kate Davenport, told Grist this money has helped bump up the recycling rate for polypropylene packaging. She said polypropylene recycling has needed a lot of investment, although her organization also sees a need to reduce plastic production overall. Starbucks is a founding partner of one of the Polypropylene Recycling Coalitions steering committee members, the NextGen Consortium, and has donated millions of dollars to this organization to explore the circularity of polypropylene, among other objectives. The Starbucks spokesperson said the company would continue to fund these and similar efforts. Starbucks declined to say whether it would eliminate additional forms of single-use plastic, like snack boxes and prepackaged beverages, or comment on whether the company would expand compostable cups nationwide. Environmental advocates say Starbucks should eliminate nonrecyclable single-use plastic across the country, although Dell acknowledged that doing so could take some time due to supply chain delays and the vast number of stores Starbucks is the second-largest restaurant chain in the world, after all. She called on the company to be more transparent about its plans, and to change in-store recycling bin labels to make it clear that only cans or plastic bottles which are recycled at much higher rates than polypropylene cups are accepted. Ramsden said that, while compostable cups are a step in the right direction, Starbucks should place its focus on reusable containers whenever possible. We need to move away from the single-use mindset, whether its plastic or aluminum or bioplastic containers, and move toward systems of refill and reuse. This article originally appeared in Grist at https://grist.org/accountability/why-some-starbucks-locations-are-switching-from-plastic-to-paper-cups/.Grist is a nonprofit, independent media organization dedicated to telling stories of climate solutions and a just future. Mailen Design's Lee Terrace is an elegant new build in dialogue with the architectural context of the Blackheath area. Mailen Design has completed Lee Terrace, a new-build, family home in Blackheath, South East London. The practice has redeveloped a triple-garage infill plot within a historic conservation area into a three-bedroom, free-standing property. Inspired by mews houses, the contemporary home is sympathetic to the character and appearance of the surrounding architecture and street scene, which includes several Grade II listed Victorian properties. Its detailed execution fulfills Lewisham and Blackheath councils' ambition to introduce sustainable new construction into the area, setting a benchmark for integrating new architecture across the whole of London. Referencing the traditional relationship between mews buildings to the end of plots of large listed buildings, Mailen Design's Lee Terrace has a contextual nature. The first and second stories are recessed, aligning with the front elevations of the adjacent terraced houses. The house's stepped facade consists of London stock brickwork and pre-cast stone, featuring ornamental angled brick detailing that complements the visual language of the area. On top sits the crowning volume, clad in subtly undulating aluminum panels with a bronze finish, a sophisticated yet unobtrusive gesture that allows the new home to settle into the architectural context of the area whilst quietly stating its own personality.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! An existing garden wall has been extended to conceal the open ground floor and main entrance to the house. From the street, a black timber door opens onto a small front courtyard paved in large ceramic tiles. Expansive glazing stretches across the ground floor elevations, giving a view through the interior to the rear garden beyond. Part of the courtyard is sheltered due to the first story of the house cantilevering outwards, creating a small canopy complete with a skylight. During the design process, Mailen Design worked closely with an arboriculturalist to assess and protect the two mature trees near the site, underscoring the studio's commitment to minimizing the scheme's environmental impact by prioritizing the existing natural landscape. This collaboration influenced key design decisions, including the layout and foundations of the house, to ensure that the trees' root systems remained undisturbed. The front courtyard's design thoughtfully recesses, leaving ample space for the branches of a mature lime tree in the adjoining garden, which backs onto Lee Terrace.Save this picture!Internally, a series of wonderfully bright living spaces feature a tactile palette of exposed concrete and oak joinery. Entering the home, the stone paving from the courtyard flows inside forming the interior entryway. A large roof light punctuates the exposed concrete ceiling to draw in natural light from above. Ahead, a wall of oak joinery conceals a bathroom utility room. A single step leads down into an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space where floor-to-ceiling glazing spanning the rear elevation allows the garden to serve as a backdrop. The dining area sits between the front entrance and a U-shaped kitchen with marble worktops and extensive cabinetry in dark forest green. Exposed concrete continues to run overhead and along sections of the wall, creating a cool contrast to the herringbone parquet flooring underfoot, whilst a second-long roof light draws in even more light. With much of the ground floor composed of glazing, what are outside forms an integral part of the interior experience, natural views of the sky and garden foliage filter in through roof lights and windows, intentionally creating a continuous dialogue with the natural landscape.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!A large sliding door opens onto a tiered garden where a patio is paved in the same ceramic tiles as the courtyard and the entryway hugs the rear elevation. A built-in seating area lies beneath a stone wall and between two sets of patio steps, respectively leading up to a larger paved section and a turfed area that encircles a mature poplar tree. Shielded from overlooking neighboring properties, the patio feels intimate and private - an attribute not commonly associated with end-of-plot mews-style houses. Designed as a versatile space, the patio offers sanctuary for family life while extending the indoor entertainment area, fostering seamless indoor-outdoor living. Inside, an oak staircase ascends to the first floor, featuring two bedrooms and a family bathroom, the walls transitioning from exposed concrete to white painted plaster. A balustrade of bespoke joinery floats along the stairwell. A second oak staircase detailed with shadow gap skirting leads up to the master bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and en-suite bathroom.Save this picture! As an avid advocate for integrating sustainability into projects from their inception, Mailen Design's Lee Terrace is a highly efficient new family home that reuses a once-dilapidated brownfield site. Serving as a benchmark for the area, the project exemplifies high-quality, sustainable architecture that aligns with local sustainability goals. An air-source heat pump, directly connected to a ground-floor service cupboard, provides an efficient system for heating the house's water. In addition to high levels of air-tightness and insulation, the home incorporates carefully positioned glazing and efficient ventilation to minimize energy demands on the building.Save this picture!Lee Terrace is an elegant and warm family home that responds to the historical context of the neighborhood and wider Blackheath conservation area. Hidden behind the extended garden wall, is a secret chic and sophisticated interior, a composition of raw and organic materials, modern design and an abundance of natural light. Ben Mailen, Project Architect, Mailen Design said: 'Lee Terrace is an example of efficiency and creativity within the challenging conditions of the historic Blackheath conservation area. This new-build family home balances modern functionality with sensitivity to the area's architectural heritage, stringent local planning and townscape requirements, and protects the two mature trees on and adjacent to the site. We have maximized the internal volume quality by designing a layout that maximizes usable space and strategically positioning glazing to bring in natural light, creating an airy, light-filled and fluid internal floorspace that feels spacious and connected to the outdoors.'Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeMailen DesignOfficeMaterialsMaterials and TagsPublished on February 25, 2025Cite: "Lee Terrace Home / Mailen Design" 25 Feb 2025. • Scotland certifies official tartan to honor its witches
    www.popsci.com
The North Berwick Witches meet the Devil in the local kirkyard, from a contemporary pamphlet, Newes from Scotland. Credit: Wikipedia CommonsShareThere are thousands of officially registered Scottish tartan designs, but only one is dedicated to the witches of Scotland. Certified earlier this month, the tricolor pattern is intended as a memorial honoring the thousands of women who were falsely accused of witchcraft during the 16th through 18th centuries. Most of the victims were hanged following sham trials and unjust convictions. Following their executions, their bodies were also burned and denied proper burial.Accusations of witchcraft have offered a convenient way to subjugate and silence persecuted people for centuries. In Europe, this frequently also stemmed from a growing stigmatization of folk medicine and midwifery, practices most often associated with women. The most recognizable example in the United States is the Salem Witch Trials of 1692-1693. Over 200 people were accused, resulting in19 hangingsincluding 14 women. In Scotland, however, the Witchcraft Act of 1563 remained codified law for nearly 200 years, and helped justify the deaths of thousands of people. Witches of Scotland, an advocacy group campaigning for a formal governmental pardon and the construction of a national memorial, estimates around 84 percent of those cases centered on women. But while the organization secured an apology from then-First Minister Nicola Sturgeon in 2022, an official pardon and historic monument plans remain elusive. In the meantime, Witches of Scotland co-founder Claire Mitchell thought of another way to commemorate the Witchcraft Acts many victims. The Witches of Scotland pattern officially became part of the Scottish Register of Tartans on February 11. Credit: Scottish Register of Tartans In collaboration with designer Clare Campbell, Mitchell created a new tartan whose tricolor scheme, weaving, and patterns all directly recall the Scottish witchcraft trials. Speaking with The Herald, Mitchell explained that the red threads represent the victims blood, the gray serves as a reminder of the ashes left after authorities burned their bodies, while the pink mimics the color of the tape used to tie legal documents. Each black square contains 173 threads for every year the Witchcraft Act was enforced, while the thin lines have either 15 or 17 threads15 is the sum of the digits of the year the Witchcraft Act was passed (1+5+6+3), and 17 for when it was repealed (1+7+3+6). However, unlike other tartan patterns, wearers arent restricted to a specific family or clan. Anyone can sport the pattern in support of the unjustly persecuted and vulnerable populations, both then and now.

  • New clues to the nailed head ritual uncovered in Spain
    www.popsci.com
One of the severed heads found at Ullastret in northeastern Spain. MAC-Ullastret a De Prado, 2015ShareWhy did prehistoric people on the Iberian Peninsula sever the heads of some of their dead and put iron nails in their skulls? This question has been debated by archaeologists for years and we finally have some new clues. The nailed head ritual may have been as a way to intimidate their enemies and celebrate their ancestors. The findings published in the April 2025 issue of the Journal of Archaeological Science: ReportsSevered heads like these were a unique funerary practice within the Iron Age Iberian world. For archaeologists and anthropologists, they offer a way to analyze these prehistoric communities. Most bodies were cremated at this time, so there is very little evidence of death rituals in the archaeological record. After death, iron nails were placed into the skulls of certain individuals. The skulls were then put out on exhibition for all to see. Archaeologists have recovered some of these skulls with signs of nailing and in some cases with the nail still embedded into the skull. Over time, archaeologists have debated if these skulls were war trophies, relics of important members of the community, or something else. Get the Popular Science newsletter Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. By signing up you agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. These hypotheses, however, based on oral and ethnographic sources, have not yet been verified, nor has there been in-depth studies on the relationship between these groups and the land they inhabited, Rubn de la Fuente-Seoane, a study co-author and archaeologist at the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Spain, said in a statement. Our premise in approaching the study was that if they were war trophies they would not come from the sites analysed, while if they were venerated individuals, these would most likely be local.Seven skulls tell the taleIn the study, the team looked at seven nailed skulls dating back to the last millennium BCE. The male skulls were uncovered in two archaeological sites that date back to this period of the Iron AgeUllastret (about 84 miles north of Barcelona) and a settlement called Puig Castellar. The sites are roughly 60 miles apart and both hosted ancient cities that were abandoned when the Romans arrived towards the end of the third century BCE.Our results reveal that the individuals from Puig Castellar and Ullastret would not have been randomly selected, said de la Fuente-Seoane. There would have been a homogeneous trend towards men in these rituals. However, the mobility and localisation patterns suggest a greater diversity, which could also imply social and cultural differences among the individuals of the two communities. To take a more in-depth look at the skulls, the team combined bioarchaeology techniques and isotope analysis. They looked at the strontium and oxygen isotopes in the dental enamel recovered from the skulls, which can reveal details about the individuals diet. The team also took detailed samples of the sediment and vegetation collected near the sites to reference it with the data uncovered from the tooth enamel. This can tell scientists whether the food they ate was grown locally or further away and offers an educated guess at where the individuals were from.Locals and outsidersThe analysis revealed that three of the four individuals found at Puig Castellar were likely not from the community. Ullastret had a mixture of non-local and local groups. This result suggests that the practice of severed heads was applied in a different way at each site, which seems to rule out a homogeneous symbolic expression. But more research is needed to be sure, said de la Fuente-Seoane.An aerial view of Puig Castellar in northeastern Spain. Credit: Museu Torre Balldovina. According to the team, the fact that the Puig Castellar skulls were exposed in an area like a wall leads them to believe that they were displayed as a demonstration of power and coercion. This could have been for both internal repression and towards some group of outsiders. In Ullastret, the two local individuals were found in a street in the middle of the city. This suggests that they put on display on a wall or a doorway of the houses next to it. This supports the hypothesis that the skulls belonged to important community members. A third Ullastret skullpotentailly of foreign originwas found in one of the external walls of the settlement. The team believes that this could represent a war trophy.A more complex ritualThe study shows some direct evidence of how prehistoric humans moved around the northeastern Iberian Peninsula during the Iron Age. It also offers some new perspectives on the territoriality in the region.Earlier studies suggested that there were major differences in how these societies used and exploited the resources surrounding them. The team from this study was able to use the Puig Castellar and Ullastret skulls to show different mobility patterns and values. The vegetation samples also show different resource management practices at each site. This differentiation reflects a dynamic and complex society with important local and external interactions, said de la Fuente-Seoane. Our study is a first approach to this archaeological problem using a method that is revolutionising the way we study mobility in the past. At the same time, it suggests that the selection of individuals for the severed heads ritual was more complex than initially thought.
