• New sustainable supply chain approach for tantalum implants by Croom Medical and GAM
    3dprintingindustry.com
Ireland-based Croom Medical and US-based tantalum products supplier Global Advanced Metals (GAM) have developed a closed-loop supply chain approach to expand the use of tantalum in 3D printing.By tackling the materials processing challenges and making its use more sustainable, the two companies are ensuring a steady, recyclable supply of tantalum powder for medical applications. Their process relies on Colibrium Additives M2 laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technology to improve printing efficiency, making tantalum a more practical option for 3D printed implants.Adding to that, Croom Medical has introduced the M2 platform for tantalum under its contract manufacturing model, as several customers are already in the prototyping phase. We invest continuously in research and innovation to push the boundaries of medical device manufacturing. Although it is rare for a contract manufacturing firm to do this, our investment in future technologies underscores our commitment to innovation. The advantage of the collaboration with GAM is that by harnessing our combined strengths and resources, we can deliver solutions that precisely address the specific needs of our OEM customers, Dr. Shane Keaveney, R&D Manager at Croom Medical.Croom Medicals Additive Manufacturing Engineer operating Colibrium Additives M2 Series 5 L-PBF printer. Photo via Croom Medical.Tantalum for medical implantsAccording to the company, tantalum has long been a trusted material in the medical field, valued for its biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and mechanical strength. This material is commonly used in surgical implants such as staples, dental fixtures, and joint replacements. Its ability to support bone growth and fuse with the body reduces risks like toxicity, bone resorption, and implant loosening, issues that can compromise long-term outcomes in orthopedic procedures. One example from 2017 includes an 84-year-old osteoarthritis patient receiving a 3D printed tantalum knee implant, according to Chongqing News.Conducted at the First Affiliated Hospital in Chongqing, the surgery was led by Professor Yang Liu as part of the nations Key Technologies R&D Program. The implant was custom-made using patient scan data, designed with porosity to encourage bone growth. Surgeons aimed to expedite recovery and reduce complications, with post-surgery images showing the patient standing with a support splint.A year after that, GAM worked with LPW Technology to refine tantalum powders for PBF 3D printing. At the time, tantalum was deemed valuable in medical implants and high-stress applications but remained challenging to process. Through this collaboration, LPWs expertise helped improve processing accuracy and expand the use of refractory metals in 3D printing.Making tantalum implants viableNow, compared to materials like titanium and cobalt-chromium, tantalum has proven more difficult to process, limiting its widespread use despite its advantages in medical applications.Croom Medical and GAM are working to change that. Their closed-loop approach recycles used tantalum powder, ensuring a steady supply while reducing waste and production costs. After 3D printing, leftover powder from Croom Medical is returned to GAM, where it undergoes refining and reprocessing before re-entering the manufacturing cycle. By creating a more sustainable supply chain, the partnership is making tantalum a more viable option for advanced medical manufacturing.Notably, GAMs Pennsylvania facility produces ultra-pure, spherical tantalum powder, supplying the raw material needed for high-precision manufacturing. Meanwhile, Croom Medical has produced 60,000+ devices.Through this latest initiative, the company aims to continue expanding its work with patient-specific implants, adding tantalum to its existing portfolio of titanium, cobalt-chromium, and stainless steel.Acetabular cup made with tantalum. Photo via Croom Medical. The intrinsic purity and properties of tantalum have a wonderful fit for next-generation implants, and we feel that Croom Medical is the company with the right balance of experience, capability, and long-established customer relationships to bring this to market, said, Dr. Keaveney.A critical part of this effort is the Colibrium Additive M2 LPBF 3D printer, which aids in producing intricate, porous structures making it ideal for implants that need to integrate with bone.Built for consistency at scale, the system ensures that each component meets strict regulatory and performance standards. Its capabilities also extend beyond the medical sector, with aerospace industries benefiting from its ability to manufacture lightweight, high-strength components.What3D printing trendsshould you watch out for in 2025?How is thefuture of 3D printingshaping up?To stay up to date with the latest 3D printing news, dont forget to subscribe to the 3D Printing Industry newsletter or follow us on Twitter, or like our page on Facebook. While youre here, why not subscribe to our Youtube channel? • Fragpunk is prepared to take on the hero shooter competition
    www.digitaltrends.com
Table of ContentsTable of ContentsFrom concept to realityCards and clashesCompetition breeds innovationThe hero shooter genre remains as competitive as ever. Certain titles, such as Marvel Rivals and Overwatch 2, continue to evolve. Others like Concord havent been nearly as successful. Even with some occasional flops, any new offering aims to make its mark in a highly crowded field. The next contender up is Fragpunk, an upcoming 5v5 hero shooter from Bad Guitar Studio and Netease.Fragpunk blends sci-fi and cyberpunk themes, along with fast-paced gunplay, to keep players on their toes every round. Most notably, it features a Shard Card system where teams select from a randomized pool of over 100 cards, some of which alter mechanics and environments, to make matches as unpredictable as possible.Recommended VideosI spoke with Xin Chang, creative director and producer of Fragpunk, to learn more about the project. He gave me some backstory on Hangzhou-based Bad Guitar Studio, which Chang helms, and how it went from a team of 10 to 100. A lot is riding on Fragpunks success, given that its also the debut title for most members of the development team.FragPunk Official Release Date Trailer | Game Awards 2024Fragpunk merges the adrenaline of first-person shooter combat with the unpredictability of a roguelike. Two opposing teams select characters, known as Lancers, with special perks and abilities. From there, a match turns into a frantic race to eliminate foes and plant/defuse bombs at specific sites. In between rounds, teams can also spend points to use Shard Cards, with various effects ranging from regenerative healing and increased movement speed to completely removing all doors in a level or turning a player upside down.RelatedOur team took inspiration from the successes of other FPS games such as Counter-Strike and Valorant, Chang tells Digital Trends. We knew we wanted to make a fast-paced game because its central in making our unique feature shine through. Fragpunk is, I hope, a great combination of what makes competitive FPS fun while also bringing a novel feature and strategic depth to the mix with Shard Cards.NeteaseFragpunk is expected to have 13 Lancers at launch, all with unique skills and ultimate moves. For instance, Brokers Cherry Bomb creates energy blasts, while his Smokestack Lightning skill (i.e. smoke grenade) is more defensive in nature. He also has an ultimate ability, Goddards Vengeance, where he blows up foes with a rocket launcher. Some characters are similar to Broker in that their ultimates also grant them special weapons for a limited time. Examples include Hollowpoints Meteora rail gun that fires single-shot high-powered rounds and Axons Electric Guitar that allows him to blast enemies explosives. Our Lancers were born from gameplay-first brainstorming: What element feels missing in a match? Chang says. Abilities evolved through playtests some ideas were scrapped for being too disruptive, while others [were retained] because they enabled unexpected synergies with cards. The process is long and sometimes difficult, but as long as the Lancers bring a refreshing experience for our players, then its all worth it.Chang even listed their top three characters from other sci-fi media that would fit well in Fragpunks setting: David Martinez (Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) is definitely up there because hes a rebellious soul with high-tech combat styles. Id also include Jinx (League of Legends and Arcane) due to her anarchic energy and explosive gadgets. And, of course, Neo (The Matrix films), since his bullet-dodging and reality-bending powers are perfect for our card chaos concept. The most fascinating aspect of Fragpunk is the Shard Card system. The large pool of cards allows players to strategize in between rounds, determining which options to allocate points into. As Chang tells me, Fragpunks Shard Cards have special rule-breaking powers, including changing the weather, landscape, weapon and even characters in the game. Most importantly, teams can select up to three cards each round to come up with unique and surprising combinations. One of my favorite card combos involves the use of Blade Master and Turtleback, Chang says. The former lets you block attacks from the front and the latter blocks shots from behind. When these two cards come into effect together, youre able to block bullets from the front and back, and enemies can only damage you by shooting at your legs and feet!NeteaseSince cards are randomized each round, it creates an element of uncertainty and even excitement. Of course, it can also lead to frustrations since luck plays a huge role. Randomness is inherent to our Shard Card system, Chang says. However, we did notice that some less interesting cards appeared too frequently during testing. Thats why we included a mechanic called Relic that allows players to retain a card between rounds if they find something that they like.Given all the above 13 characters, 17 weapon types, and over 100 Shard Cards at launch Fragpunk is filled to the brim with potential combinations and synergies. That said, it can be a nightmare to balance or track potential exploits. Chang agrees and shares one particular issue that the team encountered. When designing the World Flip card at the beginning, we wanted to really turn the whole level upside down. But when we started to integrate the card with the levels, we experienced tons of bugs. After [brainstorming] for a whole week, we had to change our way of thinking and turn the character upside down instead (as seen in our trailer for The Game Awards). So you can see how wild our thoughts can be sometimes! The success of hero shooters depends on how studios keep their player base engaged for many months. Fragpunk has competitive and strategic elements, but we also want to bridge casual and competitive crowds, Chang says. The card system lowers the barrier for entry since anyone [might be lucky enough to get] a game-changing combo, but mastery comes from leveraging RNG strategically. For example in ranked Shard Clash matches, thinking carefully when picking your teams cards and banning your enemys cards can [create opportunities] to flip a losing match into a comeback. To that end, Bad Guitar Studio focused on faster time-to-kill (TTK) ratio, as opposed to a slower pace. Faster TTK rewards sharp reflexes and positioning, while slower TTK emphasizes sustained accuracy and teamwork, Chang says. Fragpunk leans more toward faster TTK to complement its high-octane card combos. Its clear that the team wants to stand out among the competition, but that competition includes games within its own publisher. Fragpunk is being published by Netease, which is also behind Marvel Rivals. I was curious if there was a healthy rivalry brewing among Neteases development teams. We do try out each others games sometimes, but most of the time the teams work separately, Chang says. Healthy competition drives the genre forward, and were all players at heart so were excited to see how different studios interpret the hero shooter space!NeteaseChang is also a realist who recognizes that the hero shooter genre is a bit overcrowded right now and Fragpunk has to do something special to entice players. We recognize that the hero shooter market is highly competitive, but were highly motivated by our passion for this genre, Chang says. Other than the Shard Card system, we designed a Duel feature [as a tiebreaker] to highlight each players individual skill. Also, apart from the standard Shard Clash mode, we will be introducing a number of different concepts to enrich player experience such as a one-shot-one-kill mode. Theres much more to discover once we officially launch, and we are confident that we will stand out from our competitors.Fragpunk has all the tools needed to keep matches refreshing and its player base engaged. Now its up to the luck of the draw as players decide its ultimate fate.Fragpunk launches on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on March 6.Editors Recommendations

  • NATO's 'shadow fleet' dilemma has come to Asia — Taiwan says it caught a Chinese-crewed vessel slicing an undersea cable
    www.businessinsider.com
Taiwan said it detained a Chinese-linked ship suspected of cutting an undersea cable on Tuesday. It's still investigating if the incident was sabotage but warned of "gray zone" tactics from China. That mirrors a dilemma faced by NATO in the Baltic Sea with vessels linked to China and Russia. After months of suspecting that Chinese-linked ships had damaged its undersea cables, Taiwan said it might have caught a vessel in the act.The Taiwanese coast guard released a statement on Tuesday saying it detained the Hongtai, a Togolese-flagged cargo ship, after a local telecom firm reported cable damage off the island's west coast. It said the ship had been loitering in those waters since Saturday, and that the coast guard pinged the vessel seven times but received no response.Taiwanese telecom firm Chunghwa then reported in the early hours of Tuesday that a cable to the nearby Penghu Islands had been severed. The coast guard said its officials arrived at the location and found the Hongtai anchored near the damaged cable. The agency said it "stopped the 'Hong' ship in the act."Its statement added that while registered under the Western African nation of Togo, the ship bore Chinese words on its hull and all eight of its crew members were Chinese nationals.A dilemma like NATO'sTaiwan's incident closely echoes the subsea cable damage in the Baltic Sea that's been plaguing NATO, though there's no evidence linking the incidents in both regions.Western nations have long suspected that the damage in the Baltics is the result of sabotage. In December, Finland accused the Russia-linked vessel Eagle S of deliberately dragging its anchor on the seabed to sever the Estlink 2 power cable. And when two other cables in the Baltic Sea were cut in November, a Chinese cargo ship was found nearby.European NATO countries have since responded by forming a coalition to monitor the Baltic Sea with drones, marine aircraft, and ships. But it's been difficult for the Nordic nations and their allies to pin down who's behind the damage, especially since they were caused by civilian ships. For example, with no public connection between the Russian government and the Eagle S, which is owned by a UAE-registered company, the Kremlin has denied any ties to cable cutting in the Baltics. The lack of official links to Moscow has led to European leaders dubbing the vessels as Russia's "shadow fleet" which they say is also used to transport sanctioned oil and gas.The Hongtai appears to have multiple namesIn Taiwan's case, the coast guard highlighted the problems it faced in identifying the Hongtai. The agency said the ship told authorities it was the Hongtai 168 but that its vessel identifier listed it as the Hongtai 58.Local outlet Central News Agency also published a photo taken by its reporter of the detained ship's stern. The image shows a different name: the Shanmei 7.Taiwan's coast guard said it's investigating whether the incident involved sabotage or was purely an accident."It cannot be ruled out that it was a gray zone intrusion operation by China," its statement said, using a term describing hostile acts of subversion or sabotage that fall short of open war. When reporters asked China's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday if it could comment on the Hongtai's detainment, a spokesperson said: "I'm not familiar with what you mentioned, and this is not a question related to foreign affairs."Why the cables matter to Taiwan and ChinaThe detaining of the Hongtai, which Taiwan said is now held at the Anping port, comes as Taipei has voiced suspicions for over a year that Chinese ships were damaging its undersea cables. In January, Taiwan's coast guard reported that the Shunxin39, a Chinese-linked freighter on its way to South Korea, could have severed a subsea cable and ignored instructions to turn around for an investigation."The proximity between the different 'accidents' shows that there is indeed a pattern," Benjamin Blandin, a researcher who studies Asian maritime security at the Yokosuka Council on Asia-Pacific Studies, told Business Insider. These cables often carry vital internet access or electricity. In 2023, Taiwan said Chinese ships had damaged two subsea internet cables to the outlying Matsu Islands, which suffered from limited online access afterward."This was not just any random cable, but one connecting the north of the main island to an archipelago off the coast of Fuzhou," Blandin said. "That has strategic importance as a forward operating base and a way to monitor China."Blandin said Tuesday's incident involved a cable linked to the Penghu Islands, which also serve as a base for observing Chinese movements."If one day China takes these islands, or the Wuqiu and Kinmen Islands, Taiwan will be partially blind," he said.

  • 'The White Lotus' star Patrick Schwarzenegger says he sometimes wishes he didn't have his last name

"The White Lotus" star Patrick Schwarzenegger says he sometimes wishes he didn't have a famous last name.He says people who criticize him for being a nepo baby don't see the work he puts into his career. But nepotism isn't only in Hollywood; the business and tech worlds have their fair share of nepo babies, too.Patrick Schwarzenegger, 31, says a famous last name like his can sometimes be a burden especially since he's also trying to break into Hollywood. In an interview with The Times published on Sunday,"The White Lotus" star pushed back against nepotism claims from people who say that he only landed the role on the award-winning HBO show because of his familial ties."I know there are people who'll say I only got this role because of who my dad is," Schwarzenegger told The Times. "They're not seeing that I've had 10 years of acting classes, put on school plays every week, worked on my characters for hours on end or the hundreds of rejected auditions I've been on."Schwarzenegger is the son of Arnold Schwarzenegger, a bodybuilder, actor, and former governor of California, and Maria Shriver, a journalist and niece of former US President John F. Kennedy."Of course, it's frustrating and you can get boxed in and you think at that moment, I wish I didn't have my last name. But that's a small moment. I would never trade my life with anyone," Schwarzenegger said.At the end of the day, he is "very fortunate" to have the life and family that he has, including "the lessons and values" that his famous parents have instilled in him.Nepotism is everywhereNepo babies, or "nepotism babies" have been a hot topic since New York Magazine published a story in 2022 about the famous kids of Hollywood celebrities. Many nepo babies have criticized the label, saying that it diminishes the work that they put into their careers. In June, Emma Roberts Julia Robert's niece called out the use of the label, saying that people who criticize nepo babies "don't see all the rejection along the way."Some parents of nepo babies have weighed in on the discourse, too.In 2023, Tom Hanks whose son was cast to play his younger self in the film "A Man Called Otto" said it's no surprise that all four of his kids are in the industry since it's "the family business." He added that if he had been in a different field, "the whole family would be putting in time at some point."But nepo babies aren't just in Hollywood; The business and tech worlds have their fair share, too.All five of LVMH chairman and billionaire Bernard Arnault's children work at the company and its brands.Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, the eldest sons of US President Donald Trump, manage the Trump Organization together.Even regular people who aren't rich or famous use their connections to gain an advantage in the workplace.A 2023 survey of 2,000 workers68% of Gen Z workers have used nepotism to land a job offer.Career coaches previously told Business Insider that it's fine to use your network sometimes."Using your network and personal connection to learn information and gain introductions is generally seen as acceptable, even sensible. However, using your network to get unfairly hired into a role you may not be deserving of is generally seen as unacceptable," Hannah Salton, a UK-based career coach and author, said.Although most reputable companies tend to have fair recruitment processes that don't allow nepotism, in practice, it's often hard to ensure impartial hiring always happens, she said.A representative for Schwarzenegger did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours.

The Aurore project is an architectural ensemble that includes the renovation and extension of the Tour Aurore at La Defense, along with the construction of a ten-story service building, the Pavilion, at the front of the tower. Sisto Studios, as an associate architect, is responsible for designing the Pavilion and some of the tower's common spaces.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Pavilion Manifesto - The Pavilion challenges the prevailing architectural trends in a Defense district. The Pavilion is surrounded by three towers, reaching heights of 100 and 200 meters, which overshadow its location. Only its southern faade opens onto Place de l'Iris and the historic axis of La Defense. To offer a fresh perspective on how this district is inhabited and experienced, the Pavilion's design is guided by two organic principles: - An innovative lifestyle program dedicated to the users of the Aurore Tower and surrounding buildings, the Pavilion provides versatile and inviting spaces for work and leisure. These include shops, restaurants, a business center, an auditorium, lounges, coworking areas, and a rooftop. A living architecture shaped by free movement. Inspired by the image and function of a lantern, the Aurore Pavilion captures and diffuses light, creating an open, dynamic space. Its design embraces fluidity, encouraging interaction and movement within its environment.Save this picture!Save this picture! The Metamorphosis - The Pavilion is a precious glass object, reflective by day and transparent by night. It is encircled by vertical slats of frosted glass, acting as subtle filters that serve both the building and its users. This organic skin captures shifting light throughout the day, either amplifying or diffusing its glow. It creates a rare sense of architectural intimacy in a district dominated by office towers, offering controlled, discreet views of the surrounding neighborhood. The rhythm of the slats fully reveals its potential where the building's geometry creates angles. However, the Pavilion does not conform to strict right angles. Each of its corners has its own significance: bow, retreat, caesura of the longest faade - reinforced by the building's creation of three urban levels (slabs). This is living architecture in its truest sense, organic both in form and function. The public can move freely within and around the Pavilion, from the circular level to the rooftop, from Place de l'Iris to Place des Reflets, or into the Aurore Tower's reception area. An internal street, designed as an extension of Place des Reflets, links the tower and the Pavilion, enhancing the fluidity of movement. These new pathways, integrated into the project, contrast with the district's original design, which enclosed the circular level in relation to the pedestrian forecourt.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Materials - The materials used in the Pavilion's construction are an integral part of its identity and urban design. In contrast to its smooth, watertight glass exterior, the building's core is composed of opaque, warm, and porous materials. A steel structure with a 15-meter span minimizes vertical supports, freeing up the faade to function like a delicate curtain. The strict repetition of glass slats, combined with the building's 'irrational' geometry and organic flow, gives it a timeless elegance. The materials were chosen for their intrinsic qualities - raw, unadorned, and sustainable. This reflects both an aesthetic and ecological vision, breaking away from the conventional plaster and carpet finishes typical of commercial interiors.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeSisto studiosOfficePublished on February 26, 2025Cite: "Pavilion Aurore / Sisto studios" 26 Feb 2025. inZOI director Doesn't Think of It as Competitor to The SimsWith EA dominating the life simulation field with The Sims, a new player like inZOI becomes a competitor automatically. However, its director Hyungjun Kim doesn't think so. To him, it's not a rivalry."We see inZOI not as a competitor to The Sims, but rather as another option that fans of this genre can enjoy," Kim told PC Gamer. "We have great respect for the legacy The Sims has built over the years, since we know that reaching that much depth in such a short period of time is no easy task. This is due to the nature of life sim games which cover the vast and complex concept of 'life,' making it difficult to capture its every aspect."That's a very diplomatic approach, but after so many years of Sims monopoly, fans will surely compare the games in every aspect, whatever their creators say, especially since The Sims developers' reputation dropped significantly because of ridiculously priced DLCs, tons of missing features, and those accursed loading screens.Speaking of, this is what makes me feel skeptical about inZOI: EA didn't downgrade The Sims 4 without a reason, so I wonder how KRAFTON tackled performance issues with those fancy graphics."Our aim is to provide a different experience by highlighting our unique features," Kim continued. "inZOI is designed to allow players to freely shape the life they desire, using various creative tools. To achieve this, we have a realistic visual style powered by Unreal Engine 5, in-depth customization features, and AI-driven creative tools. We hope that players explore these features to bring their imaginations to life, become their own protagonists and live in those worlds."Hopefully, all these features will not make our PCs boil we'll see on March 28.
