  • ResilienceVC bucks trend, unveils $56M fund to back fintechs working on financial inclusion
    techcrunch.com
ResilienceVC, a new seed-stage fintech venture capital firm based out of Washington, D.C., is announcing its $56 million debut fund, the firm shared exclusively with TechCrunch.Founded by Tahira Dosani and Vikas Raj in 2023, ResilienceVCs mission is a straightforward one: to back fintech companies dedicated to helping Americans find financial stability. Its writing checks into companies that can help people address challenges such as becoming homeowners, getting affordable insurance and accessing government benefits. We invest entirely in visionary startup entrepreneurs that are leveraging new technologies and new business models ultimately to drive financial resilience for all Americans, Raj said. For many Americans, the financial system is just not doing what its supposed to do.The pair have a history of investing in companies that help boost financial inclusion. They previously worked together for several years as former co-managing directors at Accion Venture Lab before leaving to start ResilienceVC. Examples of their achievements include Dosani helping launch Afghanistans first mobile payments platform while on the ground in the country and Raj founding a microlending company in Bangalore, India, which sparked his interest in microfinance and led him to invest in fintech. In their more than eight years investing at Accion, a global seed-stage fintech investor in the U.S. and in developing markets, the duo invested in over 50 companies, including a number of unicorns. Dosani and Raj have been raising capital for ResilienceVCs first fund for about 18 months, with the final close taking place in late 2024.ResilienceVC plans to make 25 investments out of the fund, which the pair described as oversubscribed with an initial target of $50 million. Portfolio companies include Alice, Chaiz, EarlyBird, Foyer, Mirza, OS Benefits, PartnerSlate, and Suma, among others. Initial investment per company is around $1 million. To date, 75% or six out of eight of its portfolio companies are underrepresented founders. We expect to follow on in roughly 50% of our companies, looking to double our stake in their next round, Dosani said. That will depend on portfolio performance but well be doubling down on our winners. The firms limited partners are a combination of institutions, banks, family offices, high-net-worth individuals and foundations and include MetLife, Skoll Foundation, and Ally Financial, among others.Notably, ResilienceVC is intentionally headquartered out of D.C. Raj told TechCrunch, so that it can leverage its location and relationships with regulators and policymakers. We think its an important place to be if youre investing in fintech in particular. This is a time of great change, nearly daily change, in the regulatory environment and the policy environment, he added. I think its very clear that everyone in financial services needs to have deep connections to decisionmakers, regulators, policy makers, agency heads. And thats especially true of startups. So we position ourselves here in D.C. as a conduit to those entities.Dosani also believes that being located outside Silicon Valley gives the firm a vantage point to see the growing number of founders who are operating in other cities around the country.Overall, with ResilienceVC, the pair are hoping to buck a trend that weve seen in fintech investing: businesses focused on high-net-worth customers or large enterprises.Too often, low to moderate income or American small businesses are just considered too small, too risky, and too hard to get in front of to serve, leaving a really big gap forinvestors that are focused on the startups that are using new technologies, such as AI and embedded fintech, to build big profitable businesses while building for everybody, Raj told TechCrunch. We want to sit in that gap and invest exclusively in the best fintech startups that are explicitly serving the mass market, he said.

  • Long-dormant Mac malware returns with advanced capabilities
    www.foxnews.com
close Dakota State University president talks cybersecurity concerns in agriculture Jose-Marie Griffiths discusses the increasingly important subject with Fox News Digital. It's early, but 2025 is not shaping up to be a great year for Mac cybersecurity. In less than two months, we've seen numerous Mac malware threats targeting Apple laptops, which are generally considered very secure. These threats range from infostealers to malicious software capable of reading screenshots and stealing passwords. Now, Microsoft has identified a resurfaced malware that has returned after years, equipped with new malicious capabilities, including stealing sensitive information such as digital wallets and data from the legitimate Notes app.STAY SAFE & IN THE KNOW AT NO COST! SUBSCRIBE TO KURTS THE CYBERGUY REPORT FOR FREE SECURITY ALERTS & TECH TIPS Illustration of a hacker at work (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)What you need to know about the malwareMicrosoft Threat Intelligence has discovered a new version of XCSSET, a dangerous macOS malware that spreads by infecting Xcode projects, which are files used by developers to create Mac apps. While this malware is currently being seen in only a few attacks, it has been upgraded with new tricks to make it harder to detect and remove. One of the biggest changes is how the malware hides itself. It now scrambles its code in a more unpredictable way, making it difficult for security software to recognize. It also renames parts of its code to disguise its true purpose, allowing it to stay hidden for longer.WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?Once it infects a Mac, the malware ensures it keeps running even after the computer is restarted. It does this in two ways. First, it inserts itself into system files that launch when the computer starts. Second, it replaces the shortcut to Launchpad, which is the tool used to open apps, with a fake version that runs both the real Launchpad and the malware at the same time. This malware also finds new ways to sneak into Xcode projects, making it more difficult to spot. If an infected project is shared or downloaded, the malware can spread to other devices without the user realizing it. A person working on their Mac (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)What data can it steal? The XCSSET malware is designed to steal a variety of sensitive information from infected Macs, putting both personal and financial data at risk. One of its primary targets is digital wallets, which are used to store cryptocurrency. If a user has a crypto wallet on their Mac, the malware can attempt to access and steal funds. It can also collect data from the Notes app, where many users store personal information, passwords and other sensitive details. If important data is saved in Notes, it could be accessed and sent to hackers.Beyond this, the malware can exfiltrate system information and files, meaning it can gather details about the Mac itself, installed applications and even specific files stored on the device. This could include work documents, saved login credentials or any other valuable information. Because XCSSET is a modular malware, meaning it can be updated with new capabilities, it may gain even more data-stealing abilities over time.GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE A woman working on her Mac (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)5 tips to protect yourself from Mac malwareFollow these essential tips to safeguard your Mac from the latest malware threats, including the notorious XCSSET.1. Have strong antivirus software:Protect your Mac from XCSSET and other threats by installing strong antivirus software on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe.Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.2. Be cautious with downloads and links: Only download software from reputable sources such as the Mac App Store or official websites of trusted developers. Be wary of unsolicited emails or messages prompting you to download or install updates, especially if they contain links.Phishing attempts often disguise themselves as legitimate update notifications or urgent messages.3. Keep your software updated: Ensure that both macOS and all installed applications are up to date. Apple frequently releases security patches and updates that address vulnerabilities. Enable automatic updates for macOS to stay protected without having to manually check for updates. If you need more help, see myguide on keeping all your devices updated.4. Use strong and unique passwords:To protect your Mac from malware, its also crucial to use strong, unique passwords for all your accounts and devices. Avoid reusing passwords across different sites or services. Apassword manager can be incredibly helpful here; it generates and stores complex passwords for you, making them difficult for hackers to crack. It also keeps track of all your passwords in one place and automatically fills them in when you log into accounts, so you dont have to remember them yourself. By reducing the number of passwords you need to recall, youre less likely to reuse them, which lowers the risk of security breaches. Get more details about mybest expert-reviewed password managers of 2025 here.5. Use two-factor authentication (2FA): Enable2FA for your important accounts, including your Apple ID, Google account, email and any financial services. This adds an extra step to the login process, making it harder for attackers to gain access even if they have your password.Kurts key takeawayMac users cant afford to be complacent anymore. Gone are the days when Macs were considered "safe by default." Cybercriminals have leveled up, moving beyond basic adware to full-blown information stealers. Theyre swiping passwords, hijacking authentication cookies, intercepting OTPs and even emptying crypto wallets. The threats are getting smarter and more aggressive, and no platform is off-limits. Staying ahead means taking security seriously, because the bad guys definitely are.Do you think Apple is doing enough to protect users from the rise in malware? • Nvidia CEO claims reasoning models will boost GPU demand

NewsNvidia CEO claims reasoning models will boost GPU demandThe availability of the DeepSeek-R1 model resulted in a big drop in Nvidias share price, but CEO Jensen Huang believes this is just a blipByCliff Saran,Managing EditorPublished: 27 Feb 2025 15:32 Nvidia has continued its dominance of artificial intelligence (AI) datacentres, with its latest quarterly results showing revenue growth of 16% a 93% increase from the same period last year. The companys datacentre business reported quarterly revenue of $35.6bn, and revenue of $115bn for the full year a 142% increase compared to last year.In his prepared remarks, Nvidia CEO and founder Jensen Huang said: Demand for Blackwell is amazing as reasoning AI adds another scaling law increasing compute for training makes models smarter and increasing compute for long thinking makes the answer smarter.Weve successfully ramped up the massive-scale production of Blackwell AI supercomputers, achieving billions of dollars in sales in its first quarter. AI is advancing at light speed as agentic AI and physical AI set the stage for the next wave of AI to revolutionise the largest industries.During the earnings call, financial analysts questioned Nvidia over DeepSeek, which requires less powerful graphics processing units (GPUs), and the fact that cloud service providers (CSPs) such as Microsoft are designing their own custom chips optimised for AI workloads.According to a transcript of the earnings call posted on Seeking Alpha, CSPs account for about half of Nvidias business. But there is also growing demand from enterprise customers. Huang said: We see the growth of enterprise going forward, which he believes represents a larger opportunity to sell Nvidia GPUs long term.Huang used the earnings call to discuss why he thinks new AI models will drive up demand, even as AI models become more computationally efficient. The more the model thinks, the smarter the answer, he said. Models like OpenAI, Grok-3 and DeepSeek-R1 are reasoning models that apply inference time scaling. Reasoning models can consume 100 times more compute. Future reasoning models can consume much more compute. When asked about the risk that CSPs were developing application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) instead of using GPUs, Huang responded by talking about the complexity of the technology stack that sits on top of the challenge, implying that this would be a challenge if custom chips were deployed instead of standard GPUs. The software stack is incredibly hard. Building an ASIC is no different to what we do we build a new architecture, he said.According to Huang, the technology ecosystem that sits on top of this Nvidia architecture is 10 times more complex today than it was two years ago. Thats fairly obvious, he said, because the amount of software that the world is building on top of architecture is growing exponentially and AI is advancing very quickly. So bringing that whole ecosystem [together] on top of multiple chips is hard.Discussing the Nvidia results, Forrester senior analyst Alvin Nguyen said: Having yet another record performance from Nvidia seems commonplace despite the enormity of the feat. The record earnings represent the continued demand for Nvidia AI products. The emphasis on reasoning models driving more, not less, computation is a good verbal counter to the worries about DeepSeek impacting their demand. However, in Nguyens opinion, Huangs responses to questions on custom chips that offer an alternative to Nvidias GPUs was dismissive.Their response to the question about custom chips from Amazon, Microsoft and Google threatening their business was dismissive and ignores the need for these companies to have options outside of Nvidia and to have semiconductors tailored specifically to their AI training and inferencing needs, he said.Read more about AI accelerationBudget flexibility for on-prem AI: Given that some data cannot ever be shared with a public large language model, IT leaders need to consider their options for deploying AI systems that need to remain private.DeepSeek-R1 budgeting challenges for on-premise deployments: The availability of the DeepSeek-R1 large language model shows its possible to deploy AI on modest hardware.
