• Google Cofounder Exhorts Employees to Work 60-Hour Weeks to Create AI Designed to Replace Them
    futurism.com
Over the past few years, the tech industry has gone from cushy landing pad for STEM grads to a cesspit of corporate greed, where grueling hours are commonplace, and layoffs could strike at any moment.Unfortunately for employees of Alphabet, the parent company of Google, the squeeze is just getting started. In an internal memo sent out Wednesday and obtained by the New York Times, Google cofounder Sergey Brin who's been mostly absent from the company since 2019, except when issuing edicts about the importance of AI made it clear he wants his peons to focus even harder on developing artificial general intelligence (AGI), the long-promised "next step" in AI intelligence."I recommend being in the office at least every weekday," Brin wrote, implying that good employees should also spend a few weekends in the office."60 hours a week is the sweet spot of productivity," Brin added, stating that a "number of folks work less than 60 hours and a small number put in the bare minimum to get by... This last group is not only unproductive but also can be highly demoralizing to everyone else."Google's current policy only mandates three in-office days, so the boss' memo comes across as a heavy-handed suggestion especially at a corporation that's been criticized for unfairly distributing performance evaluations, leading to arbitrary layoffs. The crunch comes after waves of layoffs sent over 13,000 employees packing in recent years. Though Google posted $26.3 billion in profit as recently as last October, it continues to downsize and outsource full-time jobs in a bid to siphon its operating budget into AI development. To that end, Brin also urged his employees to use Google's own AI model, Gemini, more in their coding efforts, according to the NYT. Which is ironic, given Gemini's history of issues, like the time it told a user that one pound of bricks and two pounds of feathers had the exact same weight. The haranguing is also a bit rich seeing as ultimately, the goal of AI tech is to replace the very workers building it assuming it ever gets that far, of course."Competition has accelerated immensely and the final race to AGI is afoot," Brin wrote, simultaneously cracking the whip and hyping AI superintelligence, in a familiar register to other would-be AI moguls Sam Altman and Elon Musk.Should AGI ever arrive, it would have huge implications for labor and the broader economy. The trouble is, despite all the hype promising otherwise, there's little indication developers are actually closing in on the revolutionary tech. In fact, most evidence has instead been pointing toward a slowdown in AI progress.Though the concept of AGI has been bouncing around for years, it was generally seen as impossible or far-off. That changed when OpenAI released ChatGPT, which went mega-viral and spurred companies like Google to shred billions of dollars chasing the AGI pipe dream to the delight of investors, often at the expense of their workers."Why do we need to have the biggest model? What kind of pissing contest is this?" asked Timnit Gebruon a 2023 episode of the podcast Tech Won't Save Us.Gebru is the founder and executive director of the Distributed AI Research Institute and used to work on Google's ethical AI team, but was sacked by the company after publishing a paper highlighting the environmental, social, and financial risks posedby AI."Because [those building AGI are] the loudest, and have the most money right now," Gebru continued, "they also influence any type of AI discourse because they try to make it look as if everything theyre building is that AGI or has AGI characteristics."That certainly looks to be the case for Google, where billionaire executives employ vast armies of subcontractors to smooth over the rough edges of its increasingly expensive AI products.Whether AGI ever arrives or not, we can be sure the promise of it will be highly lucrative for tech moguls like Brin, and an ever-present carrot or perhaps stick to be dangled in front of the remaining Google employees desperately clinging to their jobs.It wasn't immediately clear how many hours a week Brin spends working in his office, as Google didn't respond to a request for comment.More on Google's labor practices: Something Bad Is Brewing Inside GoogleShare This Article

First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location. All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help since both devices will appear to be in the correct location. And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommendBrave.

  • Big Telecom Is Terrified Of New State Laws Demanding They Make Broadband Affordable To Poor People
    www.techdirt.com
Big Telecom Is Terrified Of New State Laws Demanding They Make Broadband Affordable To Poor Peoplefrom the enjoy-the-problem-you-created deptFri, Feb 28th 2025 12:17pm - Karl BodeDuring peak COVID lockdowns, New York State passed a law requiring that ISPs (with more than 20,000 subscribers) offer low-income state residents (and low income residents only) a 25 Mbps broadband tier for $15. Big Telecom didnt much like that, but their multi-year effort to kill the law, first passed in 2021, recently fell apart when the Trump Supreme Courtrefused to hear their challenge. Now telecom giants, long fat and comfortable thanks to regional monopolies, are worried by the fact that other states are following suit. Vermont, California and Massachusetts recently proposed their own versions of New Yorks law requiring ISPs make broadband affordable for poor people. For a generation, the U.S. government largely looked the other way as big telecom companies like AT&T and Comcast crushed all competition underfoot, then lobbied or literally bribed lawmakers to look the other way. The result: Americans pay significantly more for patchy, slower broadband than in most developed nations. With terrible customer service to match. Telecom lobbyists have long insisted that having government do anything to address this competitive logjam is radical overreach. Whether net neutrality, privacy oversight, or most notably price caps. Yet at the same time, theyre on the cusp of a generational victory that has the Trump administration effectively destroying the entirety of whats left of federal consumer protection. So not too surprisingly, states are rushing to fill that void federal regulators are leaving. And telecom giants are whining about a problem they created; first by dismantling competition and jacking up consumer rates, second by dismantling federal oversight:Any attempt by individual states to regulate prices or other parts of the broadband market will undermine all of the connectivity progress we have made, discourage investment, and end up hurting consumers. When New York passed its law, AT&T lobbyists put on a little performance where they pretended they were leaving New York state due to a hostile business environment. In reality, the company barely did business in the state in the first place; its home 5G service in question having extremely limited availability. AT&T engaged in the ploy in the hopes that the Supreme Court would reconsider its refusal to hear the case. But, apparently busy doing other favors to AT&T (like eviscerating the entirety of U.S. federal consumer protection oversight), the Supreme Court again this week refused to hear the case. That opens the door to other states following suit, much to Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, and Charters chagrin. As with everything (net neutrality, privacy, basic transparency requirements), telecom will insist that any government action to lower broadband prices is radical overreach. But requiring they provide a cheap, slow tier to poor people isnt a huge ask. In the gigabit era, providing a 25 Mbps tier costs big providers a tiny pittance of their fat, captured revenues. Its also worth noting that companies like AT&T are massively politically powerful in state legislatures, and the Vermont, California and Massachusetts bills havent passed yet. And despite kicking this all off with its own law mandating affordable broadband to the poor, New York has yet to actually enforce its own law, so the full scope and impact of this will be nowhere as dramatic as telecom lobbyists will claim.

  • I know complaining about the campaign in Monster Hunter is silly, but I cant get over how much of a downgrade Wilds campaign is compared to Worlds
    www.vg247.com
Zorah MagnifiedI know complaining about the campaign in Monster Hunter is silly, but I cant get over how much of a downgrade Wilds campaign is compared to WorldsBefore you give me crap for arguing the merits of one Monster Hunter feature hardly anyone is going to care about after the first week, I need to make a case about Wilds nothing-campaign.Image credit: Capcom Article by Sherif Saed Contributing Editor Published on March 1, 2025 I am, by any realistic metric, fairly new to the Monster Hunter series. I held off playing the games for years, because they were locked to handheld consoles I didnt care about - and they frankly looked like they ran like s**t.Monster Hunter World was my first, and its what made me fall in love with the series; Ive been a fan ever since. I have over two dozen hours into Wilds as I write this, and I decided to mainline the campaign before fussing about with sidequests. And boy, was that such a let down.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Monster Hunter campaigns arent known for their narrative chops or clever setups. They mostly exist to shepherd you through tutorials of the many, many, many systems and mechanics youre going to rely on in your next 100+ hours. Structurally, they serve as a tour of each games menagerie. They always play out like this: your squad is on the hunt for a mysterious monster whose presence is affecting the regions of the world you get dragged into. On their trail, you keep getting interrupted by some other monsters, before you finally learn whats caused your original target to blah blah blah. You reach the big fella, have a showdown with it, and the campaign is over. Youre then introduced to High Rank and the actual game of Monster Hunter begins. In a very broad sense, that description fits the campaign of Wilds about as well as it does Worlds. The specifics, however, vary greatly - and its in those missing details that one campaign can make for a compelling adventure and the other barely registers. The thrust of Worlds campaign is what made it great. Zorah Magdaros was a new type of monster, so colossal in size that it needed an entire village of people simply to slow it down. This thing is large enough that you could fight multiple monsters on its back and thered still be room for more.Clearly, this was am ambitious undertaking for the team; an attempt to introduce a new type of encounter to Monster Hunter. Most people didnt like it. Fighting Zorah Magdaros involved a lot of constructing elaborate ramparts to slow it down; running to load up cannons to chip away at its health, and generally do things that are very unlike what you come to Monster Hunter for. Yes, Wilds ramps up the spectacle - but only sporadically. | Image credit: CapcomI, however, liked them precisely because of that. See, Zorahs decidedly different gameplay segments not only managed to break any monotony of fighting one monster after the other in the campaign before it could set in, the game also used its journey through the world as a way to advance the narrative.Every time it would move to a new area of the map, that part would be unlocked for you to explore. And each time you did that, youd see firsthand the effect it's had on the local ecology. The game kept you in the dark for almost the entirety of the campaign about the true purpose of Zorahs migration, but the chase gave the story some urgency and an enticing mystery to learn. Now, compare that to the Wilds campaign. Theres no Zorah, no larger looming threat. Arkveld, the flagship monster of this particular game, shows up here and there to do something the characters cant explain, before it vanishes - and you dont see it again for another hour or two. Its not the final boss, that honor goes to a sleeping giant that you only learn of its existence one mission prior. There is no sense of large, different groups of people coming together to stop a common threat to be found here. In fact, some of the monster introductions in the campaign feel like Capcom simply couldnt find a way for them to properly leave the green room, so they just sort of insert themselves into some missions and force you to fight them then and there. Why am I now just learning about capturing monsters, Capcom?Image credit: CapcomTheres a distinct sense that something tying the different camps of characters together used to exist before it was cut. Some of the NPC conversations, and even a couple of lines of dialogue in cinematics allude to, well, something more going on - but you never get to see it.Even the mystery of the forerunner civilization and their people's weather-manipulating tech ultimately bringing about their doom falls flat when it just ends up being a tale sporadically told in cutscenes that feels more like it belongs in a lore book.Theres a lot about the Wilds campaign that could be seen as a microcosm of the main games core problems. It does away with a lot of the charm; sands down the rough edges in an effort to make it more accessible. But I am not sure those were the right areas to target. Were likely going to mostly forget about the existence of the main Wilds campaign very soon as more of the games triumphs and misfires come to the fore, but I dont think I can stop wondering what a true sequel to the World campaign wouldve looked like.

Cadet Gavin Lane - recruit, Runny SnakeImages: Nintendo Life*BRRP, BRRP! BRRP, BRRP!*OLLIE: Team, this is Colonel Reynolds; its been a long time. Whats the situation?JIM: Reynolds? It cant be! Hearing you loud and clear, Colonel.GAVIN: NO RESPONSE.ALANA: Colonel, I think Cadet Lane is struggling to get through. Ive been storing rations but Im not sure when the four of us will reconvene in person.GAVIN: *BRRP* Sorry, Colonel. I had a handkerchief stuck around my radio. I dont need a handkerchief. One of those ear implants would be handy, though.OLLIE: Excellent, age hasnt slowed you down one bit I think. Now, our next mission takes us to the nuclear weapons disposal facility on Shadow Moses Island, where well be shadowing (chortle!) a known Special Operations soldier called Solid Snake. I understand that none of you have had any prior experience with Metal Gear Solid, is that right?ALANA: Thats not quite correct, sir. I visited Shadow Moses with my brother as a wee lass long ago, then on my own much later. Its been a while since, but I have been hankering to revisit the place. And what a revisit.JIM: It wasnt only a first visit to Shadow Moses for me, sir, but a first visit to the Metal Gear series. It has been a blind spot for a while, I am ashamed to admit.GAVIN: Same here, Im a total MG rookie - an N64 kid who didnt have the funds for multiple consoles. I would have loved to play this back in the day and gotten the contemporary effect, I was just on a different track.Images: Nintendo LifeOLLIE: Apologies, Sgt. Hagues, the Pentagon must have given me the wrong brief. Lets start with our high-level thoughts, then. Hagues, as someone returning to Shadow Moses in 2025, what did you make of your time with the game?ALANA: Oh, I fell in love all over again, Colonel. Its amazing how much of the beginning I remember. There are few things as iconic as those opening moments as youre sneaking into the facility. It does take me time to adjust to the controls and the feel, but one thing that always stands out is the atmosphere. MGS feels incredibly unique, even within its own series. And its a technical marvel for the time, too. Its just fabulous as far as nuclear facilities go.OLLIE: Yes, its amazing just how unique it still feels. Cadet Norman, lets go to you next. What did you make of your experience this first go around?JIM: Prepare to have a giant exclamation mark appear out of your noggin, Colonel, because I found it to be fine. Insubordination of the highest degree, Im sure, but there was something about the uniqueness of it all that never really gelled with me. Putting on my historical hat and looking at it as a product of the time and a precursor for so much stealth that followed was my way in, but I struggled to get on board with a lot of it, Im afraid.OLLIE: I need scissors! 61!Sorry Your response caused some minor malfunction there over the Codec Thats fine though, Norman, totally fine. Cadet Lane, where do you sit with this?GAVIN: I really enjoyed it. Normally when I play something older and a bit clunky, as Jim says, that historical context cap is essential. With this, though, it felt like it was schooling me on an entire console. Its just dripping in PS1 and that period of gaming, and I took great pleasure in the history lesson. Some parts hit much more than others, but thats standard for any game.Images: Nintendo LifeOLLIE: Indeed, it almost feels like the quintessential PS1 game in many ways. A lot has been made of the games story over the years; Kojima has become known for his lengthy cutscenes and excessive exposition, but its safe to say that this particular entry perhaps isnt as egregious as his later titles. What did you all make of the story and, in particular, how it was told over cutscenes and Codec calls?GAVIN: I liked how it leaned into the melodrama in a B-movie fashion, and the Codec felt like a fairly fresh narrative tool, especially with the fourth-wall breaks all over the place. I loved the fact that the NO RESPONSEs always have an in-game reason when you know all the twists and reveals - its never just, Oh, the devs didnt write or record dialogue for that bit. The whole thing was silly, schoolboy nonsense, but I went with it and was entertained.JIM: Im not the biggest Kojima-head, but I totally agree that this wasnt quite as dialogue-y as I was expecting. That said, some of those calls dont half go on! As Lane mentioned, the Codec calls and fourth-wall breaks were a big win for me, and I warmed to it when things went a little campy, but the 'schoolboy'-ness of it all never sat all that well with me. I dont know, I have never particularly warmed to the Cool Dude With Gun genre, so perhaps I was doomed from the jump.ALANA: I think thats a fair comment the humour and the tone of MGS is very Hideo Kojima, and that doesnt always sit well with me either. Many of his female characters point to that. But to pivot a little, I think it largely works here; the balance of the stupid, bombastic moments, the melodrama, and the ridiculous things you can do in combat (Ive never used ketchup like that before, Snake, but Ill always remember), really balances out the very serious moments, the moments where Snake or Meryl or Sniper Wolf show vulnerability.I think 'cinematic' is overused as a descriptor in general, but MGS is one series that fits that term perfectly. In 1998, the storytelling and the way it was presented were revolutionary. And like I mentioned, I think its still very unique today. Other MGS games feel a bit too self-indulgent, in my opinion. Other than MGS3.GAVIN: As I was playing I kept thinking of Resident Evil and how both Konami and Capcom leaned into the B-movie cheesiness that really works given the hardware fidelity and restrictions of that era. Its kitsch now but it holds up because it never takes itself too seriously. For me, all the militaristic fetishism was the weakest part - it was the freaks and misfits' carnival cast that I enjoyed.Images: Nintendo LifeOLLIE: The comparison to RE also highlights just how insanely good the voice acting was for the time. RE is famous for its cheesy dialogue and, lets be honest, awful delivery, but the story in MGS was told wonderfully well, and the actors did a marvellous job.Keeping with the story, but also injecting a bit of gameplay in here, lets talk about the boss characters. The series as a whole is well known for its memorable boss encounters, and this is no exception. What did you make of the villains, and did you have a favourite?JIM: While the controls got on my nerves a little in these instances, I enjoyed most of the bosses. They crossed over into full-on silliness for me in a way that the rest of it didnt. Honestly, Ocelot got me the most in this respect. The entire fight is like a scene from Scooby-Doo and it had me genuinely chucking throughout.GAVIN: Yeah, it had me humming Yakety Sax. I liked all the characters but it wasnt until the second Sniper Wolf fight that I felt I wasn't fighting the controls, I loved that one. I took down Liquid in the helicopter first time, too.ALANA: The bosses are the highlight for me, particularly in the latter part of the game. The second Sniper Wolf fight is incredible, and the last Vulcan Raven fight is tense, too. Plus, Metal Gear REX, as clunky as it can be to fight cmon, you're fighting a mech. I love how almost every boss feels different sometimes youre being chased around in a small space and trying to get an advantage, others you have to physically do something in the real world. And then the final boss is literally a fist fight. After all that fancy stuff before.OLLIE: I can understand why the somewhat dated controls would present a bit of a problem during the boss encounters. For most of the game, youre encouraged to sneak your way past the guards and not get spotted, and now youre suddenly thrust into a relatively small space and forced to use your weaponry.Image: Nintendo LifeSpeaking of which, did you have a specific weapon youd fall back on throughout the game, or were you more inclined to experiment depending on the situation?GAVIN: I generally went with whatever the game indicated via the ammo lying about. I did come to love chaff grenades.ALANA: Chaff grenades are the way, Lane. Im much the same. I do enjoy screwing with the patrol men inside Shadow Moses by leaving them little items or magazines and the like, before I take them out quietly. But otherwise, I am situational, but always with my trusty SOCOM and suppressor.GAVIN: There are loads of legit options I never even considered. When Id almost finished, I saw a video of someone destroying all the cameras with rockets - something I never did as I was too worried about ammo conservation.JIM: I am in much the same boat! Maybe its something that comes with playing more Metal Gear, but I feel like I went about things in a very boring way. The combat would generally take me a little by surprise and Id panic-default back to the SOCOM unless the game was guiding me otherwise.OLLIE: The SOCOM is so reliable, particularly if you manage to pick up the suppressor, too.Well, were nearly at an end with our Shadow Moses mission, but I have to admit that my revisit has got me itching to replay the multiple sequels. Sgt. Hagues, did you feel the same way? And Cadets Norman and Lane, are you inclined to try out the rest now that youve dipped your toes in the series?ALANA: I admit Colonel, it did and does but it also makes me wistful for that era of Konami. Lane mentioned Capcom, too; the PS1 and PS2 era felt magic for those two developers. MGS2 improves on 1 in many ways, particularly gameplay-wise, and it leans into the craziness of MGS even more, so if anyone is on the fence, that might temptJIM: I still have about an hour left (I believe) and I have certainly been swayed enough to see it to the end. Something like Twin Snakes might be on my list as a way to find out whether it was the gameplay or the story that rubbed me the wrong way, but I cant say that Ill be rushing to it. Hey, it cant be for everyone!Images: Nintendo LifeGAVIN: Im in two minds. I get the sense that the series doubled down on the lore stuff with Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, bloody Exposition Snake and the rest in a way Id find less interesting. Back in 98, this must've felt cutting-edge and far less 'B-movie'; more T2 than Timecop. I can see how younger players especially would have invested in the lore and the on-the-nose themes and found it incredibly profound. Maybe Ive got the measure of the series wrong, but it feels like it went a bit more po-faced as the tech enabled Kojima and co. to push the boat out production-wise. Is that an accurate assessment, Colonel?OLLIE: The series retained its unique sense of humour and whimsy heck, theres a monkey in MGS4 that loves to smoke and guzzle cans of soda but I would certainly say that the more freedom Kojima had, the more bloated each entry became. There was a slight overcorrection with MGS5 and that rubbed a lot of hardcore fans the wrong way, but this may have been a symptom of the rift between Kojima and Konami at the time. Its a big commitment to play through the entire series, and Id say if youre not quite sold on the story from the first game, then youd be fine skipping the rest. As much as it pains me to say.Thats all weve got time for today, friends. I believe next time well be checking out Pikmin?GAVIN: Correct, Colonel. Well be taking to the stars once more, on course for PNF-404.OLLIE: Excellent. In the meantime, if you need to, you can contact me by Codec. My frequency is 140.85. • How to get rid of the new Apple Mail redesign
    techcrunch.com
There are three inevitabilities in life: death, taxes, and tech platforms making design changes that are universally disliked. The latest victim to this phenomenon is the Apple Mail app, which got a major redesign in iOS 18. This update is also rolling out on iPads and MacBooks. The new Apple Mail design separates emails into categories, like Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions. It also gives contact photos to each sender, which aligns with the companys new branding features for businesses across the iOS ecosystem. While some users find the redesign visually unappealing and difficult to navigate, others find that they are more likely to miss important messages, which is understandably not ideal.Across social media, beleaguered iOS users have described this update as completely unreliable, indecipherable, and so ugly. Some have gone as far as to wish the apps UX designers would poop hedgehogs. Thankfully, there is a way to turn off these updates without manifesting this unthinkable rectal pain into the world.First, open your Mail app on iOS 18.Locate the three-dot menu in the upper right corner of your screen. From there, select List View instead of Categories as your display. While this at least returns your inbox to whatever setup you had before, theres still a lot of visual clutter, since contact photos still appear in the app. This may be convenient when youre texting via Messages because you probably have contact photos for your friends and family. But in your mail inbox, it doesnt really help to see a little yellow shopping bag next to every single email from a retailer especially since multiple tech blogs and newsletters I subscribe to get flagged with the same icon as H&M or Anthropologie, which are ostensibly a different kind of business. To get rid of the contact photos on your iOS Mail app, follow these steps.Open up the Settings app on your iPhone.Scroll to the bottom of the screen, where you will see a section called Apps. From the Apps menu, scroll until you find the Mail app (or just type Mail into the search bar to save yourself a solid five seconds life is short). Under the section labeled Message List, toggle off the option that reads Show Contact Photos. At last, your Mail app is free from clutter well, except for those promotional emails from H&M and Anthropologie that you dont really open anyway. Maybe its time to unsubscribe from a bunch of mailing lists? Youre on your own for that one.
