• The Massive 24TB Seagate External Hard Drive Is on Sale This Week at Best Buy
    www.ign.com
If you're shopping for a huge amount of local storage, this is one of the best deals available right now. For a limited time, Best Buy is offering this massive Seagate Expansion 24TB USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive for only $279.99 shipped. That averages out to just $11.67 per TB of storage and the best route for anyone who wants to stack tons of storage and doesn't want or need to pay extra for SSD speeds.Seagate 24TB External Hard Drive for $280Seagate Expansion 24TB USB 3.0 Desktop Hard DriveThe Seagate Expansion boasts a single 20TB disk drive so it's no bigger than any other desktop hard drive. It features a USB 3.0 interface with roughly up to 100MB/s transfer speed, which is in line with what you'd expect from a traditional hard drive. It also includes recovery software and automatic recognition of both Windows and Mac computers.Although SSDs are all the rage these days, traditional hard drives are still the superior choice for long term storage. For one, hard drives are significantly less expensive. Compared to this hard drive's $11.67/TB cost, a solid state drive would run you at least $50/TB. Hard drives also have a much higher maximum capacity. Consumer SSDs generally cap out at 8TB, which pales in comparison to the 20TB capacity of this drive. Perhaps most importantly, although SSDs can equal HDDs in terms of lifespan, it's much easier to recover data from a HDD than SSD if either one fails.Looking for more alternatives? • Towards Zero Ending Explained and How It Changes the Agatha Christie Book
    www.denofgeek.com
Warning: contains finale spoilers forTowards Zero. Why have a husband when you can have a lawyer? asks Lady Tressilian in episode one ofTowards Zero. Its a maxim that Audrey Strange would have done well to follow, considering how this twisted story unfurled. The name Nevile Strange with its idiosyncratic one-l spelling was a clue hiding in plain sight thatTowards Zeros handsome tennis star was no hero, but an evil stranger (indeed, in Agatha Christies 1944 novel on which this three-parter is based, Nevile isnt even a blood relative of the Tressilian family but Sir Matthews ward who grew up with them under an assumed identity after committing a childhood murder).A cold-hearted psychopath who saw everything as a contest and who couldnt stand to lose, Nevile very nearly succeeded in having Audrey hanged for his aunts murder. In fact, hewas the one whod bashed in her ladyships skull and smothered family lawyer Mr Treves with a pillow two more killings to add to that of young Peter James, a child shot dead by Nevile as a boy, using a bow and arrow as a boy. Thanks to Inspector Leach, Neviles plan was scuppered and he was sent to the gallows, ridding his family of a foul canker. Heres how it all played out.Why Did Nevile Try to Frame Audrey? To punish her. An obsessively competitive man, Nevile felt that Audrey had publicly humiliated him when she sued for divorce on the grounds of adultery. He had been a serial philanderer throughout their marriage, but Audrey had suffered in silence until he began an affair with Kay Elliott. Finally deciding to act, Audrey stole Kays monogrammed compact and planted it in Neviles car as evidence of the adultery, which forced him to publicly confess and to grant her a divorce.Nevile pretended to feel remorse for his behaviour and to want to stay friends with Audrey, when in reality he was seething with resentment and planning her downfall. He married Kay, whom he never loved, and arranged to spend their honeymoon at Gulls Point when he knew that Audrey who had also grown up there as a ward of his lord and ladyship would also be visiting. There, he carried out his plan to kill Lady Tressilian and to frame Audrey for her murder in an act of revenge.Kay and Louis Secret PastNeviles second wife Kay, somewhat incidentally, was revealed along the way to have been a con-artist who, along with her rakish paramour Louis Morel, preyed on the wealthy. She had first approached Nevile Strange at a tennis match in the South of France intending him as one of her marks, but then betrayed Louis by falling for Strange and his luxurious lifestyle and choosing to stay with him. That explains the tension between Kay and Louis when the gang spend the afternoon dancing at the Easterhead hotel where Louis is staying.Trying to make Thomas Royde jealous, Mary later invites Louis to Gulls Point, making Nevile, Audrey and Kays love triangle a love square. After Neviles arrest, Kay and Louis are seen driving away together, reunited, and now its unclear perhaps having inherited Neviles money, inadvertently making him the ultimate mark of all.Mac the Illegitimate SonWhen Nevile Stranges new valet Mac (real name Matthew Hutton) sized up his employers clothing against himself, it looked as though he were plotting to usurp Neviles position. Was he in cahoots with Kay, as it seemed when they shared a sip of whisky from the same hip flask? No. Hutton was simply comparing his and Neviles shoesizes and more to spot a family resemblance because they were cousins. Unlike the book, in which there is no Mac character, and Nevile is not a blood relation of Sir Matthew Tressilian, in the TV adaptation Nevile is Sir Matthews nephew and Matthew Hutton is Sir Matthews illegitimate son.Matthew (clearly named after his biological father) was the product of a liaison between Sir Matthew Tressilian and a 16-year-old scullery maid. When Lady Tressilian found out about the pregnancy, she sent the maid away and kept it as a family secret explaining why she watched Sir Matthew drown without alerting any help, told Inspector Leach that its a terrible thing to be angry at the dead, and smashed her husbands framed photograph.Nevile hadnt factored in Mac/Matthew Huttons role when he killed his aunt to frame Audrey. Because Hutton was wrongly arrested for her ladyships murder, Nevile was forced to commit another murder that of Mr Treves while Hutton was in police custody, in order to incriminate Audrey.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox! With Nevile hanged, did Mac inherit his fathers house in the end? Despite noting that bastards cant inherit, he is seen packing the place up at the end of the three-parter, so perhaps he did end up with Gulls Point? As for Audrey, she left the place behind, finally free of Neviles psychological torment and the starvation of their relationship.Mary and ThomasNot involved in either of the Gulls Point murders, ladys companion Mary and cousin Thomas were each rewarded by substantial payments from Lady Tressilians will, freeing them up to leave Salt Creek and become independent. Mary told Thomas that she planned to use her money to travel, first on le train bleu to Nice and then on the Orient Express (the setting for one of Agatha Christies most famous Hercule Poirot novels).Thomas now had the money he needed to return to his Malaysian rubber plant, and sets off there but promises to keep up his and Marys correspondence, hinting that the couples path may cross in future too.The Murder of Young Peter JamesIn the novel, it isnt explicitly revealed that young Nevile Strange was Peter James killer, but all the ingredients are there for the reader to work it out. In the book, Mr Treves tells the story of a child killed by another child using a bow and arrow, and says that the killer was sent away and raised under a new identity. The murderer, says Treves, had a certain physical peculiarity that would mean they could be correctly identified even in adulthood. Treves is telling the story as a warning because he has recognised just that physical peculiarity among the guests at Gulls Point (Nevile Strange has a shortened finger on one hand, which we assume is the peculiarity) and is trying to warn Nevile that hes onto him. In the TV adaptation, its made much clearer that Nevile killed Peter but owned up to it and pretended that the murder was a tragic accident, which Thomas Royde knows to be a lie.Inspector Leach, Sylvia and BarrettThree lonely souls were united at the end ofTowards Zerowhen the previously suicidal Inspector Leach, whod suffered with PTSD and survivors guilt after World War One, offered to become the ward of orphan Sylvia, whose previous guardian Mr Treves had been murdered by Nevile Strange.Joining them will be Mrs Barrett, the housekeeper at Gulls Point now in need of work following her ladyships murder. Leach and Barrett shared a tender moment when he expressed shame for having led men like her son to their deaths in the war, and guilt for having returned alive when so many of them did not. Barrett wisely told him that his death wouldnt have kept her son alive, and not to carry the guilt. The three of them will now form another ersatz Salt Creek family, but hopefully a less viperous and much happier one than lived at Gulls Point.Inspector Leach doesnt feature in Agatha Christies 1944 novel Towards Zero, but is instead a composite based on three characters in that book: (1) Superintendent Battle, who investigates the murder at Gulls Point with his local bobby nephew (2) James Leach while on holiday where Leach is posted, and (3) Angus MacWhirter, a guest at the Easterhead hotel who attempted to take his own life a year before the events of the novel. The Sylvia of the novel is not an orphan and Mr Treves ward, but the daughter of Superintendent Battle. In the book, when Sylvia confesses to thefts that she didnt commit at school, it inspires Battle to realise that Nevile was the true culprit all along. All episodes of Towards Zero are available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.

  • First-Ever Asteroid Mining Mission Loses Contact With Earth
    futurism.com
Last week, California-based space company AstroForge launched what it claimedwas the first "commercial deep space mission in history."The company's plan was to send its washing machine-sized spacecraft, dubbed Odin, to visit an asteroid millions of miles from Earth and scout it as a potential mining site. But mere hours after the spacecraft lifted off atop a SpaceX rocket last week alongside Intuitive Machines' Athena lunar lander the AstroForge team encountered issueswhile trying to communicate with the probe. Then, less than 24 hours following launch, the team lost contact entirely."I think we all know the hope is fading as we continue the mission," AstroForge founder Matt Gialich admitted in an update on X-formerly-Twitter over the weekend, as flagged by Space.com. "So we're going to keep our head up. We're going to keep trying over the weekend, and we'll see how far we get."A number of space companies have raised huge amounts of funds with the promise of turning errant space rocks into a lucrative source of money. But many have failed to live up to that promise, folding before even venturing into space. As the New York Times reports, AstroForge did initially make headway, sending a demonstration satellite into orbit in 2023.Its followup Odin mission, though, is looking rough.Odin made it over 186,000 miles away from home. The spacecraft did manage to unfold its solar panels and likely started charging, according to the company. But then the company ran into some "massive issues," as Gialich wrote in an extremely detailed update posted on AstroForge's website on Saturday. The team found that the polarization on Odin's antennas was "wrong" meaning that "both uplink and downlink for the first 4 hours of the mission did not work.""No commands were getting through, and also, no data was getting down," Gialich wrote. Despite sending a number of commands, "we received nothing in return."In the company's X update, Gialich said that the spacecraft may be tumbling at a "really, really slow speed."The last contact the team received from Odin was 20 hours after liftoff. But the team isn't giving up yet."We have a plan over the weekend, and there is still a chance that we are going to be able to recover the vehicle," the founder said. "We do think we have some theories on what's going on, and if one of them is true, there is still a recovery path."Beyond Odin, AstroForge is already eyeing an asteroid landing mission, dubbed Vestri, despite the major challenges with its current probe."We have probably the best group of investors in the world. A lot of them have doubled down on this company," Gialich said. "So regardless of the outcome of Odin, regardless if we ever talk to it again or we don't, we're going to roll these findings into the next mission."More on mining asteroids: Asteroid Mining Startup About to Launch First MissionShare This Article

  • Analysts Warn That If AI Agents Succeed, the "Internet Will Go Dark"
    futurism.com
In the logic of the machine learning gold rush, the next breakthrough offering in the industry will be "AI agents" personal assistants, basically, that can use apps and computers to do tasks on your behalf. If that actually happens a serious "if," but not a completely far-fetched possibility, as early efforts have already started to hit the market there a major side effect: it'll totally change the ecosystem of information online if it's mainly being consumed by neural nets instead of humans.AsBusiness Insider reports, financial analysts are warning that if the use of AI agents becomes widespread, there will be sweeping knock-on effects throughout the economy.Take Bernstein wealth management analysts Mark Shmulik and Nikhil Devnani, who wrote in a recent investor note flagged by BI thatthe effects on the economies of the internet will be seismic as apps and websites start to be designed with AI users in mind instead of human ones."If AI agents truly become useful, the internet will go dark," Devnavi and Shmulik wrote in their investor note, viewed by BI.Instead of switching between car-share services to find the lowest price, for example, your AI agent could simply find the cheapest ride for you, effectively taking the mental labor out of deciding what to do.That's a benign enough example, but others could be more confounding. If it becomes de rigueur to catch up on the news of the day by having your AI agent summarize the work of various publications, that means that no human is viewing their ads anymore so at that point, who's funding the reporting of tomorrow's news?It would also give extraordinary economic power to AI agents and their creators, because they'd be the new gatekeepers between consumers and a broad swath of products and services.Currently "aggregators have control over the supply," the Bernstein analysts wrote, "but if demand consolidates and gets fulfilled through an AI agent, you may never need to open your rideshare app again!"Combine that realignment with the other ways that AI is threatening to cut into jobs that have traditionally been done by humans, and you have the makings of a great economic upset. And of course, that's all assuming that AI becomes extremely clever in the future, while in reality the tech's accuracy and reasoning abilities have often lagged behind the hype. In Shmulik and Devnani's future, are the AI agents offering perfect advice to navigate a challenging world, or are they gullible dupes that make harebrained recommendations especially once AI agents start to penetrate high-stakes industries like health care and insurance? But for those looking to cash in on the AI hype train, that's nothing to worry about there's money to be made."Welcome to the Agentic AI era," Devnani and Shmulik wrote. "There's nowhere to hide."Share This Article

  • Should we be moving data centers to space?
    www.technologyreview.com
Last week, the Florida-based company Lonestar Data Holdings launched a shoebox-size device carrying data from internet pioneer Vint Cerf and the government of Florida, among others, on board Intuitive Machines Athena lander. When its device lands on the moon later this week, the company will be the first to explicitly test out a question that has been on some technologists minds of late: Maybe its time to move data centers off Earth? After all, energy-guzzling data centers are springing up like mushrooms all over the world, devouring precious land, straining our power grids, consuming water, and emitting noise. Building facilities in orbit or on or near the moon might help ameliorate many of these issues. For Steve Eisele, Lonestars president and chief revenue officer, a big appeal of putting data storage on the moon is security. Ultimately, the moon can be the safest option where you can have a backup for your data, Eisele says. Its harder to hack; its way harder to penetrate; its above any issues on Earth, from natural disasters to power outages to war. Lonestars device is equipped with eight terabytes of storage, about as much as a high-end laptop. It will last for just a couple of weeks before lunar night descends, temperatures plummet, and solar power runs out. But the company expects that to be enough time to test practicalities like downloading and uploading data and verifying secure data transfer protocols. And it has bigger plans. As early as 2027, the company aims to launch a commercial data storage service using a bunch of satellites placed in the Earth-moon Lagrange point L1, a gravitationally stable point 61,350 kilometers above the moons surface. There, the spacecraft would have a constant view of Earth to allow continuous data access. Other companies have similar aspirations. The US space company Axiom, best known for organizing short trips to the International Space Station for private astronauts, intends to launch a prototype server to the station in the coming months. By 2027, the firm wants to set up a computing node in low Earth orbit aboard its own space station module. A company called Starcloud, based in Washington state, is also betting on the need to process data in space. The company, which raised an $11 million round in December and more since then, wants to launch a small data-crunching satellite fitted with Nvidia GPUs later this year. Axiom sees an urgent need for computing capacity in space beyond simply providing an untouchable backup for earthly data. Todays growing fleets of Earth- and space-observing satellites struggle with bandwidth limitations. Before users can glean any insights from satellite observations, the images must be downlinked to ground stations sparsely scattered around the planet and sent over to data centers for processing, which leads to delays. Data centers in space will help expedite many use cases, says Jason Aspiotis, the global director of in-space data and security at Axiom. The time from seeing something to taking action is very, very important for national security and for some scientific applications as well. A computer in space would also save costs that you need to bring all the data to the ground. But for these data centers to succeed, they must be able to withstand harsh conditions in space, pull in enough solar energy to operate, and make economic sense. Enthusiasts say the challenges are more tractable than they might appearespecially if you take into account some of the issues with data centers on Earth. Better in space? The current boom in AI and crypto mining is raising concerns about the environmental impact of computing infrastructure on Earth. Currently, data centers eat up around 1% or 2% of the worlds electricity. This number could double by 2030 alone, according to a Goldman Sachs report published last year. Space-tech aficionados think orbiting data centers could solve the problem. Data centers on Earth need a lot of power to operate, which means they have a high carbon footprint, says DamienDumestier, a space systems architect at the European aerospace conglomerate Thales Alenia Space. They also produce a lot of heat, so you need water to cool them. None of that is a problem in space, where you have unlimited access to solar power and where you can simply radiate excess heat into space. Dumestier, who led an EU-funded study on the feasibility of placing large-scale IT infrastructure in Earths orbit, also sees space as a more secure option than Earth for data transportation and storage. Subsea fiber-optic cables are vulnerable to sabotage and natural disasters, like the undersea volcanic eruption that cut Tonga off from the web for two weeks. High above Earth, data centers connected with unhackable laser links would be much harder to cut off or penetrate. Barring antisatellite missiles, space-based nuke explosions, or interceptor robots, these computing superhubs would be nigh untouchable. That is, except for micrometeorites and pieces of space debris, which spacecraft can dodge and, to some extent, be engineered to withstand. Outside of Earths protective atmosphere, the electronic equipment would also be exposed to energetic particles from the sun, which could damage it over time. Axiom plans to tackle the problem by using hardened military equipment, which Aspiotis says survives well in extreme environments. Lonestar thinks it could avoid the harsh radiation near the moon by ultimately placing its data centers in lava tubes under the lunar surface. Then there is the matter of powering these facilities. Although solar power in Earths orbit is free and constantly available, its never previously been harvested in amounts needed to power data infrastructure at the scale existing on Earth. The Thales Alenia Space study, called ASCEND (an acronym for advanced space cloud for European net zero emission and data sovereignty), envisions orbiting data platforms twice as large as the International Space Station, the largest space structure built to date. The server racks at the heart of the ASCEND platforms would be powered by vast solar arrays producing a megawatt of power, equivalent to the electricity consumption of about 500 Western households. In comparison, the solar panels on the ISS produce only about one-quarter that amount240 kilowatts at full illumination. Launch costsand the environmental effects of rocket launchesalso complicate the picture. For space-based data centers to be an environmental win, Dumestier says, the carbon footprint of rocket flights needs to improve. He says SpaceXs Starship, which is designed to carry very large loads and so could be cheaper and more efficient for each kilogram launched, is a major step in the right directionand might pave the way for the deployment of large-scale orbital data centers by 2030. Aspiotis echoes those views: There is a point in the not-too-distant future where data centers in space are as economical as they are on the ground, he says. In which case do we want them on the ground, where they are consuming power, water, and other kinds of utilities, including real estate? Domenico Vicinanza, an associate professor of intelligent systems and data science at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK, tempers the optimism, however. He says that moving data centers to space en masse is still a bit of a moonshot. Robotic technologies that could assemble and maintain such large-scale structures do not yet exist, and hardware failures in the harsh orbital environment would increase maintenance costs. Fixing problems in orbit is far from straightforward. Even with robotics and automation, there are limits to what can be repaired remotely, Vicinanza says. While space offers the benefit of 24-7 solar energy, solar flares and cosmic radiation could damage sensitive electronic equipment and current electronics, from mainstream microchips to memories that are not built and tested to work in space. He also notes that any collisions could further crowd Earth orbit with space debris. Any accidental damage to the data center could create cascading debris, further complicating orbital operations, he says. But even if we dont move data centers off Earth, supporters say its technology we will need to expand our presence in space. The lunar economy will grow, and within the next five years we will need digital infrastructure on the moon, Eisele says. We will have robots that will need to talk to each other. Governments will set up scientific bases and will need digital infrastructure to support their needs not only on the moon but also for going to Mars and beyond. That will be a big part of our future.
