• Nacelles New Star Trek Figures Are Perfectly Accessorized
    gizmodo.com
As io9 has pointed out previously, Star Trek is not your typical sci-fi franchise when it comes to toys. There have been some very weird releases over the years, made even more notable by the fact that Trek figures just arent as prolific as, say, the constant stream of merch that pours out of the galaxy far, far away. That means these new Nacelle figures, spotlighting less-obvious characters as well as beloved crew members in specific contexts, have been on the minds of fans and collectors since they were announced at last years New York Comic Con. Now theyre inching closer to your shelf by going on pre-order today. In a press release, Nacelle founder and CEO Brian Volk-Weiss said he was thrilled by the overwhelmingly positive response from Trek fans so far on the release; this is touted as just the first wave of figures, with a second wave (created using the help of fan suggestions) to be announced soon. Who will join the line-up next remains to be seen, but as for now, here are close-up looks at the eight releases in the first wave. (We used the shots with the accessories included because theyre just so good.) Theyre expected to ship in October, and will run you $29 for individual figures, or $225 for the full set. Pre-order details can be found at Nacelle Store. Weyoun, Deep Space Nine Nacelle As the cunning and loyal Vorta representative of the Dominion, Weyoun is both a master diplomat and a cunning enforcer, Nacelles description for this figure reads. But hes not entirely without fun: he does come with a smiling option, half a pepperoni pizza and a pair of chopsticks, as well as a supply of Ketracel White. Valkris, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock Nacelle The Klingon operative, doomed partner of Kruge, comes with a tiny Genesis Device that unfortunately, or at least probably, will not create new planets or resurrect heroic Vulcans.Tuvix, Star Trek: Voyager Nacelle A two-in-one character (three-in-one if you count the flower), yanked straight out of whats still one of the most controversial Star Trek episodes everamong fans and the actual cast members alike! Captain Sulu, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country Nacelle The beloved original character comes with a variety of phasers and communicators from different Trek projects, but you know youre gonna keep Sulu posed with his cup and saucer in hand, about to take his next sip.Captain Garrett, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Yesterdays Enterprise Nacelle Yes, a younger version of her character did pop up in Section 31, but most fans would prefer to remember Rachel Garrett from her standout TNG episode. That battle-scarred head (to capture her final, resolute moments, Nacelle writes) is certainly a harrowing inclusion. Midshipman Peter Preston, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Nacelle Another macabre alt-head, for another brave yet unfortunate hero. Captain Jellico, Star Trek: The Next Generation Nacelle You even get Picards fishbowl, so you can re-create the scene where Jellico orders it removed from the ready room on the Enterprise-D.Mirror Archer, Star Trek: Enterprise, In a Mirror, Darkly Nacelle Comes complete with appropriately evil-looking Mirror Universe beverages! An essential addition for Scott Bakula fans as well as Trek fans, at least until someone steps up with the Quantum Leap figures the world is sorely lacking. Want more io9 news? • Trumps AG Claims She Will Release More Epstein Docs, but They May Be Redacted for National Security
    gizmodo.com
The search for radical "transparency" isn't going so well inside the new Trump White House. MAGA-world was perturbed last week when President Trumps new attorney general, Pam Bondi, claimed to have finally shed light on the mysterious case of Jeffrey Epstein but, instead, released a bunch of documents that had already been publicly available for years. Now, Bondi is claiming that the reason she wasnt able to release more documents is because other government officials blocked them from being sent to her. Late yesterday, l learned from a source that the FBI Field Office in New York was in possession of thousands of pages of documents related to the investigation and indictment of Epstein, she wrote in a recently published letter. Despite my repeated requests, the FBI never disclosed the existence of the files. Bondi now claims that a source told her that there were thousands of pages pertaining to Epstein that remained in the Southern District of New York, the district where Epstein was being tried for sex trafficking when he died in 2019. Bondi has intimated that the FBI and the SDNY withheld those documents from her when she requested the full Epstein dossier. She now says that, with the help of new MAGA FBI director Kash Patel, a truckload of documents have been acquired from SDNY and that those documents will soon be made public. However, Bondi has explained that the documents that will be released may still be partially redacted. Bondi went on Fox News recently and said that aspects of the thousands of newly discovered documents may still be shielded from public scrutiny. Were gonna go through it as fast as we can, but go through it very cautiously to protect all the victims of Epstein, Bondi said, implying that the identities of victims would remain secret. Is that the only thing that will be redacted? asked Hannity. National security? the host tried a little later. National security, some grand jury informationwhich is always going to be confidential. But well see. Lets look through them as fast as we can, get it out to the American peoplebecause the American people have a right to know. Not only on that, but on Kennedy, on Martin Luther King. Given Bondis discussion of JFK and MLK in the same conversation, its unclear if her national security concerns applied to those cases rather than to Epsteins, althoughgiven the fact that those figures died half a century ago, its unclear why any of Americas national security interests would be impacted by information pertaining to those cases. Gizmodo reached out to the Justice Department for clarification. The internet certainly took Bondis rhetoric to mean that the Epstein case might have national security implications. As one commenter put it, heres an idea, how about you tell us WTF a known human trafficker and pedophile has to do with our national security?? Bondis bizarre claims about the FBI and the SDNY suggest two equally disturbing possibilities: 1) there is some sort of conspiracy involving a rogue wing of the FBI and the legal system in New York or 2), Bondi, the Attorney General of the United States, is basically inventing a narrative to justify the governments resistance to the long-sought transparency that Trumps base has been asking for. Julie K. Brown, perhaps the most authoritative journalist when it comes to the Epstein case, has pointed out that some 10,000 pages of heavily redacted Epstein case files are already publicly available on the FBIs website. Many of those files were publicly released during Bidens administration. If the subsequent files that the DOJ releases duplicate those documents, it will have meant that Trumps government is essentially re-releasing already available documents and attempting to present them as new. Brown has also noted that Bondi was the Attorney General of Florida between 2011 and 2019, a period of time when Jeffrey Epsteins plane records became public, victims lawsuits were filed, and a lot of new evidence against Epstein surfaced. So questions should be asked about why she didnt take up the case or launch a probe when she was attorney general in Florida. The news that Bondis supposed document dump will be redacted has only further spurred long-circulating conspiracy theories that Epstein was an intelligence asset that either worked for the CIA, Israels Mossad, or both. Theories that Epstein may have been a spook have been around for years and seem to have first germinated due to the mysterious circumstances in which Epstein was given a plea deal in Florida when he was first arrested for sex crimes in 2006. The non-prosecution agreement that many deemed highly lenient was overseen by then U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Alexander Acosta. Acosta is reported to have later said: I was told Epstein belonged to intelligence and to leave it alone. Acosta was later made Trumps labor secretary and was also reportedly in the running to replace Trumps Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, but was dropped from the list of contenders a day after Brown published a story on his Epstein sweetheart deal. But Epsteins possible links to the spook world go further than that. Ghislaine Maxwell, Epsteins longstanding partner in crime, is the daughter of Robert Maxwell, a publishing magnate who enjoyed ties to the Israeli government and who died under suspicious circumstances in 1991. It has long been rumored that Maxwell worked for Mossad, Israels top intelligence agency. The reigning conspiracy theory is that Epsteins sexual exchanges with young girls werent just about his own perverse desires but were part and parcel of a broader honeypot operation to entrap powerful men with compromising material. This is, again, a conspiracy theory, and no evidence has yet surfaced to substantiate itthough its worth pointing out that Epstein did know a hell of a lot of powerful men, and ferried them (and lots of women) around on his private jet (which has since been dubbed the Lolita Express). Epstein was found dead in his prison cell in 2019, and a coroners report produced by the New York City medical examiners office stated that Epstein died by suicide. However, Epsteins death has long been the subject of conjecture and conspiracy theory, leading to the oft-heard refrain Epstein Didnt Kill Himself, which has circulated the internet for the past half-decade. Odd aspects of the casesuch as the malfunctioning of the prison security cameras in front of Epsteins cell on the day of his deathhave contributed to public suspicions about the case. A forensic pathologist hired by Epsteins brother in 2019 produced a report that stated homicide appeared likely in the case.

  • Our Gut Microbiome Turns Sugar into Compounds Vital for Our Health
    www.discovermagazine.com
The Industrial Revolution 150 years ago transformed human life in many ways, including granting us unlimited access to sugar. But combined with other technological advances, much of the Western population now leads a more sedentary lifestyle. The result is a society grappling with obesity and related conditions, such as type 2 diabetes. While metformin is one of the most widely prescribed antidiabetic drugs worldwide, its precise interaction with sugar has not been fully understood until now.Researchers from Kobe University in Japan have found that metformin influences sugar flux in the gut and uncovered how gut bacteria use sugar to produce compounds vital for human health. Their study, published in Communications Medicine, marks an exciting discovery of a previously unknown physiological process that may aid in the development of new diabetes therapies.Intestinal glucose excretion represents a previously unrecognized physiological process. Understanding its molecular mechanisms and how drugs influence this system could lead to the development of novel therapeutics targeting gut microbiota and their metabolites, said Wataru Ogawa, an endocrinologist from Kobe University, in a press release. When Sugar Gets Out of BalanceSugar has developed a somewhat negative reputation, but it is the body's primary energy source, fueling cellular functions and playing a crucial role in brain activity, primarily in the form of glucose. When glucose levels are high, the liver and muscles store the excess for later use. The hormone insulin regulates this process by promoting glucose uptake into cells. However, when the body becomes resistant to insulin, diabetes develops.Type 2 diabetes is the most common form and is often associated with excess weight, age (typically over 35), a family history of the disease, or a sedentary lifestyle. Medications such as metformin help manage blood sugar levels and reduce complications.A Physiological PhenomenonPrevious research showed that metformin increases the excretion of glucose into the intestines, prompting researchers to investigate the dynamics of this process in greater detail. In their study, they used a newly developed bioimaging technique called fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomographymagnetic resonance imaging (FDG PET-MRI) to track metformin induced glucose movement in both humans and mice. For the first time, the team observed glucose excretion in the small intestine, followed by its transport to the large intestine and rectum. It was surprising to find that even individuals not taking metformin exhibited a certain level of glucose excretion into the intestine. This finding suggests that intestinal glucose excretion is a universal physiological phenomenon in animals, with metformin acting to enhance this process, said Ogawa in the release.Their findings reveal that metformin significantly increases glucose transfer from the bloodstream to the intestines. But why is sugar being redirected back into the gut?Microbiome's Role in Sugar Metabolism Expanding their research, the team explored glucoses role in the large intestine and found that gut bacteria metabolize it to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs).Gut microbes generate many substances essential for human health, including SCFAs, which serve as a primary energy source for the cells lining the gut. While bacteria that feed on undigested fiber typically produce SCFAs, the study found that glucose excreted into the intestine can also fuel this process, even in the absence of fiber. This suggests that intestinal glucose flux provides an alternative carbohydrate source for gut bacteria, enhancing SCFA production, particularly with metformin treatment. This process may contribute to the symbiotic relationship between gut microbiota and their human host.Ogawa and his team aim to further investigate how metformin and other diabetes medications affect glucose excretion, gut microbiota, and their metabolic products. Additionally, they seek to address some limitations of their study and deepen our understanding of this newly recognized physiological phenomenon.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards. • Surgeons implant teeth in patients eyes to restore vision
    www.popsci.com
A procedure similar to the one depicted above uses a patient's tooth as part of the ocular implant. Credit: Deposit PhotosShareA trio of Canadians are on track to become the countrys first residents to have their eyesight restored thanks in part to their teeth. Osteo-odonto keratoprosthesis, more commonly known as tooth-in-eye surgery, involves harvesting the bodys strongest natural substance to craft a specialized lens implant for patients with severe corneal blindness from conjunctival scarring. Tooth-in-eye surgery remains a comparatively rare procedure even 60 years after its development, but advocates hope the newest success stories can help popularize the treatment option for some of the most difficult cases of blindness.Pioneered by Italian ophthalmologist Benedetto Strampelli in the early 1960s, tooth-in-eye surgery is intended to minimize the risk of a patients body rejecting a foreign implant by mostly relying on its own biological material. Surgeons first extract a tooth (usually a canine), then shave it down to form a rectangular layer called a longitudinal lamina that includes a hole drilled in its center.Once the frame is finished, doctors install a tiny plastic telescopic lens into the dentine case before temporarily sewing the implant into the side of a patients cheek, where it remains for a few months as new tissue grows around it. Another surgery removes the scar tissue from the patients eye and replaces it with healthy tissue also harvested from a cheek. In a final procedure, doctors sew the implant into the eye socket under the cheek tissue transplant, where the lens helps partially restore sight. Previous surveys indicate many patients vision improves enough to allow them to drive cars.Tooth-in-eye surgery is only applicable for specific instances of severe corneal blindness, when trauma only damages the front surface of an eye and not its retina and optic nerves. This was the case for Brent Chapman, one of the three surgical patients profiled by the CBC program As It Happens last week. Chapman, a massage therapist from North Vancouver, lost his vision at age 13 after over-the-counter pain medication triggered a rare auto-immune reaction called Stevens-Johnson syndrome that resulted in a weekslong coma and severe burns across his body and eyes. Chapman, now 33, has since undergone roughly 50 surgeries including 10 corneal implants, but none managed to permanently restore his vision.A patients eye after the tooth has been surgically implanted over the eyeball in tooth-in-eye surgery. Credit: Greg Moloney / Providence Health Care Due to the potential risks involved in tooth-in-eye surgery, physicians are only attempting the procedure on one of each patients eyes. But despite the potential complications, tooth-in-eye surgery maintains a high success rate across the 10 countries in which it has been performed. A 2022 study from Italy, for example, determined around 94 percent of implant recipients could still see even 27 years after their surgeries. Although Chapman admitted to feeling a little apprehensive after first learning about the option, a quick chat with a woman who successfully received the same treatment convinced him to volunteer. She had been completely blind for 20 years, and is now snow skiing, he said, adding: I know it sounds a little crazy and science fiction-y.
