• Delta Air Lines bets on blended-wing flight to reduce emissions
    www.theverge.com
Delta Airlines is backing a startup that wants to design more fuel efficient, blended-wing-body aircraft, in the hopes of reducing its carbon footprint and making air travel more sustainable. The airline said today that it will help support the development of startup JetZeros blended-wing-body (BWB) demonstrator aircraft that aims to cut fuel consumption, emissions, and noise. Delta isnt providing any capital investment in the company, but rather operational support to help make its dream of a blended-wing aircraft a reality. JetZero will join Deltas Sustainable Skies Lab incubator, where it will receive operational expertise from the airlines engineers in the design and construction of a BWB demonstrator aircraft, with the aim to test it in 2027. In 2020, Delta pledged to spend a billion dollars on sustainability efforts, including the Sustainable Skies Lab, with the aim of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050. The interior looks fancy, but exit doors could be a challenge. Image: JetZeroIn a BWB aircraft, theres no clear dividing line between the wings and the main body of the craft, as they are smoothly blended together. The main advantage of blended-wing designs is to reduce drag associated with conventional tube-and-wing airframes. But more than that, JetZero says BWB designs can help reduce emissions by up to 50 percent, while keeping the same engine technology and fueling infrastructure. By reducing drag, providing more lifting surface area and even load and lift distribution, and reducing the overall weight, the company said it can slash the emissions from a conventional airframe in half. The Long Beach Airport-based startup was founded in 2021 with the goal of developing next-gen sustainable aircraft on the way to zero-emission aviation. The startup says its BWB aircraft can carry up to 250 passengers, the equivalent of a mid-range international aircraft. And with engines mounted on top of the aircraft, the noise profile is expected to be much quieter. In a BWB aircraft, theres no clear dividing line between the wings and the main body of the craft.Deltas support for JetZero comes on top of a $235 million grant from the US Air Force that was awarded in 2023 for the development of a full-scale demonstrator aircraft to validate the blended-wing concept. The company is also collaborating with Northrop Grumman and Scaled Composites to build and test the aircraft.Delta also believes that JetZeros BWB design will also be compatible with sustainable aviation fuel, which the airline hopes will comprise at least 95 percent of its fuel consumption by 2050.There are some challenges in designing a blended-wing aircraft, such as designing a safe evacuation process in the case of an emergency landing. Also the seating would be theater-style, as opposed to rows in a tube-shaped airframe, which could present limitations for the number of exit doors. Boeing, Airbus, and even NASA have all worked on BWB designs, but none of their concepts have ever made it into production. FAA certification is also unknown, and until someone actually tries, we may not know what kind of safety challenges will arise. But Delta believes that JetZeros design presents a solution within reach. Working with JetZero to realize an entirely new airframe and experience for customers and employees is bold and important work to advance the airline industrys fuel saving initiatives and innovation goals, said Amelia DeLuca, Deltas Chief Sustainability Officer, in a statement.See More:

  • Nintendo wins piracy lawsuit against file-sharing site
    www.theverge.com
Nintendo has won its legal battle against Dstorage, the French company it accused of hosting pirated games on its file-sharing site 1fichier.com. In a press release sent to outlets like Eurogamer and GBATemp, Nintendo says a French Court agreed that 1fichier.com is liable for failing to remove or block access to unauthorised copies of Nintendo games stored on this platform. In 2021, a Paris court ordered Dstorage to pay Nintendo $1.13 million for failing to remove pirated games despite warnings from Nintendo. Though Dstorage appealed this decision, the court ultimately sided with Nintendo. The company later brought the case before the highest French judiciary court, which has now ruled against Dstorage as well.Nintendo is pleased with the Courts finding of liability against DSTORAGE and believes that it is significant not only for Nintendo, but for the entire games industry, Nintendo said in its press release. It adds that the decision will prevent sharehosters like 1fichier.com from claiming they need a court order to follow through on requests to remove copyrighted content.Nintendo has only stepped up its legal fights over the past year. In 2024, the company sued Yuzu, the developers behind a Nintendo Switch emulator, resulting in it shutting down completely, and also went after the Switch emulator Ryujinx. It also sued the developers of Palworld for allegedly infringing on its patents.

  • Daredevil: Born Again An Unexpected Connection to the Netflix Series Could Right a Decade-Old Wrong
    www.ign.com
Streaming Wars is a weekly opinion column by IGNs Streaming Editor, Amelia Emberwing. Check out the last entry Severance Chikhai Bardo Explained: What Really Happened to Gemma? This column contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Episodes 1 and 2.When Daredevil: Born Again was announced, I was excited to see the Avocados at Law back in action, but I was unsure how Disney would honor the Netflix series we all loved. With these first two episodes, its evident that the House of Mouse was prepared to pay homage to the oners and violence alike, but my favorite callback actually came in quite the unexpected form: BB Urich (Genneya Walton). Stick with me for a moment, because the why requires that we time-travel a bit.Waaay back in 2015 a sentence that it physically hurt to type we watched Wilson Fisk (Vincent DOnofrio) murder Ben Urich (Vondie Curtis-Hall) in his home. It was a devastating turning point in the shows first season, successfully driving home what a threat Kingpin was in a way the mob boss previous murders didnt. Bens death hit harder because he was important, not just to the series itself but to Daredevil (and occasionally Spider-Man) canon as a whole. It was unexpected, brutal (Fisk strangles him to death), and, unfortunately, almost entirely Karen Pages (Deborah Ann Woll) fault.PlayFisk was there to murder Urich because the reporter had brought his mother Marlene Vistain (Phyllis Somerville) into their little dispute by questioning her for an article. Urich lied to Fisk right before his death, insisting that he had gone to see Marlene on his own. However, seeing Marlene wasnt Urichs idea, but Pages, and to make matters worse, she had burst into the elderly womans room in hospice against Urichs advice. It took me a really long time to forgive Karen Page for her role in Ben Urichs death, with her own emotional despair being of little comfort. We were supposed to feel for her because she didnt know any better, but I mostly just hated her because she was warned by someone who did know better and they died for it. It was also particularly frustrating because Ben was a more interesting character than Karen had been at the time. Obviously, this changed over time. Karen grew, learned to honor Ben in her own way throughout the seasons, and eventually became a contributing member of the team instead of tears and mistakes wrapped up in a nice outfit. The first couple of episodes of Born Again reduce her to despair once more, but its different this time. She is rightfully devastated over Foggys (Elden Henson) death, but she also squares up with Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) when he begs her to talk to him. We learn in Episode 2 that Murdock disappeared after Foggys death, leaving her without either of her best friends, and she reasonably stands her ground against Hells Kitchens former defender. Enter BB Urich, Bens niece with the same penchant for journalism as her uncle. Ben Urich has a brother and nephew in the comics. Arnold is his brother, and Phil his nephew. Arnold doesnt play much of a role in the comics, but Phil follows in his uncles footsteps as a journalist and eventually becomes a version of the Green Goblin, Hobgoblin, Goblin Knight and is currently the Goblin King. Phils full name is Phillip Benjamin Urich. We meet BB in Born Again over the course of a series of clips. Shes entirely off-camera until Episode 2, interviewing various citizens of New York on their opinions on various matters like Fisks mayoral campaign, Daredevils disappearance, and more. Shes green and shes hungry, with her ambition eventually landing her in Mayor Fisks office where she asks about his wife Vanessas (Ayelet Zurer) absence from his campaign. Fisk answers jovially, but young BB is crossing the same line that got her uncle killed in plain sight. Its a dangerous game shes playing, one that her uncle Ben would have undoubtedly coached her through.Meanwhile, Deborah Ann Woll is currently billed for the rest of the season, and this series killing off both Foggy and Karen would try my patience in a way that feels difficult to articulate (I am very mad about Foggy Nelson). Daredevil: Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane also spoke to IGNs Scott Collura about just how important her character is to the series, saying Karen Page is the heart and soul of this universe and of this daredevil mythology and Karen's interaction with our story and this season and beyond is huge. And I can't give too much away, but families tend to fracture when a loved one passes. And in that fracture, they can rebond in ways that are surprising and new. And that's what I think we were going for.PlayWith that in mind, it feels safe to say that theyre not going to keep her out of New York for the entire series either, which means she needs something to do other than pat Matt Murdock on the head until he gets his groove back. For my money, theres no better full-circle arc for the character than to have her mentor BB in Bens stead, especially because young BB is skipping down the same path Karen did in 2015 with somehow even more reckless abandon and no one to advise her otherwise.BBs future holds two potential paths. One is filling the role of Ben Urich, a respected reporter who plays pivotal ground-level roles across many of the most crucial comic stories (Secret Invasion, Civil War, etc.). The other is a new version of Phil, which feels less likely given his deeper connection to the Spider-Verse rather than Hells Kitchen. Regardless of which fork the character heads down, I hope that if theyre going to tie her to an existing character, they at least make her unique in her own way. And, of equal importance, I want to see Karen Page be a part of her growth.

  • Why the Perfect Time to Work with an Interior Designer Is Now
    www.elledecor.com
Interior-design projects almost never have a precise, definable beginning. You might know from the moment you move into your home that it needs an overhaul. Or you might live there comfortably for years before your needs changethe kids go off to school, your job goes remoteand so you need the house to change with you. Or maybe you just feel a little dissatisfied with a certain room, always wondering vaguely how you could use and enjoy it more.Whats certain, though, is that its never too early to bring a designer on board. Take these three scenarios handled by designers with Decorating Den Interiors, a collective of individually owned and operated design firms across the U.S. Theyll show you that no matter where you are in your particular projectdreaming about it, actively planning it, or wondering if you need to do it at allthe time to enlist professional expertise is right now. When the entire space needs reimaginingDesigner: Krista Shugars | Photographer: John ColeWhen Krista Shugars, owner and lead designer of KD Designs Custom Interiors, turned to the dining area in a historic home in Baltimore (one of multiple rooms there that she and her team designed), she didnt start with paint colors and fabric swatches. That would all come much later. First, she and her team had to more or less create the room from scratch, knocking down two brick walls and moving an entire kitchen.KD Designs essentially served as project manager on the renovation, not only envisioning how the space could be reconfigured, but diving deep into the feasibility and cost of the complex undertaking. On major projects like this one, Shugars says, we provide schematic and rendering drawings for how the space should look. Its really a collaborative effort between our firm, the general contractor, and the client. Here, the firm had to contend with the fact that 10 solid marble columnsa defining feature of the historic 1880s homeneeded to be retained. (At top, you can see how the dining room flows into the great room, which is defined by these massive structures.) The challenge was to develop a more contemporary feel that was still in keeping with the houses grand scale. The client loved the historic feel of the home, but inside it was designed very traditionally, and thats not their style, Shugars said. They wanted a place that they actually wanted to live in and enjoy without being stuffy. So not only did the team demolish the two walls and relocate what Shugars calls an odd, unused space that housed a kitchen, bathroom, pantry, and laundry areathey also reframed the windows and added an additional skylight to the two existing ones, flooding the room with natural light. A new built-in beverage bar modernized the room and added versatility. And then they moved on to paint colors and fabric swatches. When you have a room you dont know what to do withDesigner: Kimberly Paulus | Photographer: Andrei RestrepoSometimes, a design project starts with a brainstorming session. Well have people call us and say, We just dont use this room at all, and we dont know what to do with it, says Kimberly Paulus, owner of Sienna, Texas-based Monarch Designs. In this particular case, she started with a freewheeling interview about what the family liked to do, what activities they enjoyed that werent accommodated by existing rooms. For this family with two daughtersone in high school and the other in collegethe answer turned out to be hang out and drink coffee. So Paulus turned their unused formal dining room into a European-inspired coffee bar and internet caf.The traditional dining-table-and-chairs setup was replaced with a coffee station and three bistro tables. A high table with stools facing a window makes it almost like you are sitting in a coffee shop, Paulus says. Additional vintage-look features like stonework, ceiling beams, and hand-painted tiles provide theme-appropriate finishing touchesso it feels like a place you might find on the street in Barcelona. Paulus points out that designers dont just need to know what colors you like and whether your tastes are more traditional or more modern. Some of the questions we ask are personal: How do you spend your free time; what are your likes and dislikes from a hobby standpoint? she says. Clients ask, Why do you need to know this? But really, we do. The only way a designer can help your home reflect you is if you let them know you. When the way you use your space changesDesigner: Claudia Leah | Photographer: Darren MilesThe pandemic was what spurred one couple with a vacation home in Naples, Florida, to turn their part-time status there into permanent residence. That, in turn, meant that their casual home office in a detached cabana was no longer sufficient. A lot of people found that a certain functionbeing able to work from homewas just not there, says Claudia Leah, owner of Claudia Leah Design. For this client, the space was too high, so it echoed. They didnt have a good enough backdrop for video meetingsit showed the pull-out bed. The function wasnt there. So Leah proposed an office purpose-built to fit their needs, enclosing a dining area and truly drilling down into exactly how they planned to work in the room. Walls were installed with acoustic backing for soundproofing. To help the client better control the rooms lighting while working at the computer, existing French doors were given adjustable-louver shutters, which also allowed for more privacy. And the overall layout was designed with the need for an appealing background for video chats in mind. Its now probably the most-used room in the house, Leah says.Part of a designers skill is we see the thread that goes through, Leah says. A certain style of furniture, a certain color, how a room is arranged, how the light is filtered or capturedthings like that. Its a matter of asking and eliminating and finding the right path. It comes down to listening to the clientand also educating them.

  • Are Wall Clocks Dated or Cool? Designers Have STRONG Opinions
    www.housebeautiful.com
Every item on this page was hand-picked by a House Beautiful editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.Wall clocks used to be all about practicality. But as weve gotten flooded with ways to check the timecellphones, smart watches, and even luxury alarm clockstheyve evolved from utilitarian to decorative and even kitschy. So, do wall clocks have a place in design today? While wall clocks have not entirely gone the way of the telephone table, they are not as commonplace as they once were, says the team behind architecture and interior design firm Kaminiski + Pew. A wall clock is not something we typically consider when developing a design for space, but the right piece can create impact and add personality. Laura ResenThese days, most homes designers enter dont have wall clocks. On the special occasions when they do, the placement is specific. The only scenarios in which I tend to see wall clocks are in childrens rooms, although even in those spaces theyre increasingly less common, says designer Jennifer Press. Wall clocks in other roomsliving room, family room, den, etc.look pretty dated in a home. Since I only see them in childrens rooms, the ones that are most common are colorful and playful and tend to be more Scandinavian in design. William WaldronA kitchen by designer Miles Redd.Designer Ryann Swan Hacketta mom of three young kids who says she relies on the microwave and oven digital clocks to get her family out the doorhas seen a wall clock become a useful tool for big families beyond the aesthetics. We recently had the privilege of designing a home for a family of eight, and the number-one accessory design directive was an analog wall clock in full view of the breakfast area, she says. The owners felt the clock held each member of the family personally accountable for managing their own schedule and stressed executive functioning. Her team sourced a vintage Adolf Loos wall clock for that project. She recommends 1stdibs and Chairish as go-to sources for vintage options. For contemporary spins on wall clocks, she suggests Design Within Reach. I would treat the clock as an extension of the interior design and ensure its consistent with your aesthetic, she adds. And maybe avoid anything reminiscent of your fourth grade classroom. Andrew FraszA dining room by designer Corey Damen Jenkins. While Shari Francis hasnt used any wall clocks in recent projectsonly variations of digital alarm clocks and vintage radio clocksthe designer has noticed a trend in wall clock craftsmanship leaning heavily toward the use of natural materials like wood and stone, often accented by metal and sculpted into minimalist designs, she says. Ive also come across some vintage-inspired pieces that pull from Scandinavian design, offering a mix of clean lines and whimsical charm. Francis calls out the Arhaus marble clock, Lumens Punta wall clock, and Lumens Colgante marble wall clock as cool, timeless options shes currently seeing. She echoes prominent online sources for unique pieces, naming a bespoke wood clock by Randy Bader on 1stdibs and a green marble wall clock by Euromarmi Store on Chairish. If youre into finding one-of-a-kind pieces, Etsy is always a solid choice for discovering cool, handcrafted wall clocks from independent makers, Francis says.Danielle Chiprut is also seeing wall clocks in homes today as large-scale, sculptural decorespecially in traditional or European-inspired designs, the designer says. • Flooring Ideas That Will Instantly Elevate Any Space
    www.housebeautiful.com
Ever stop to consider that your floors make up some of the largest visual real estate in your home? Which, of course, means that the surfaces spanning the entire square footage of your living space have a huge impact on the overall design and mood of your entire house. "Flooring is by far one of the most important materials we spec," says New York City-based interior designer Nicole Arruda. "You can have the most beautiful home with beautiful paint colors and furnishingsbut if the flooring isn't right, nothing really is."Getting it right can require anything from sanding and staining to ripping out unsalvageable old floors and laying down new planks. And whether your budget allows for installing coveted hardwoods or simply taking a savvier approach with vinyl, The Home Depot has you covered. Its vast selection of flooring options, both in-store and among THD's endless online "aisles," makes it easy to find the perfect material, color, and finish for your design scheme. To take the stress out of this hugeand semi-permanentdecision, the retailer also offers a floor-visualizer tool, so customers can see their selects in their space before purchasing. And samples are readily available to obsess over at home (much as you would with paint swatches). Here, we break down the features and benefits of two of the most popular flooring options, vinyl and engineered hardwood, to help you decide which might be right for your space. The Home DepotVinyl: Budget-Conscious and Family-FriendlyForget the outdated material of yesteryeartoday, not all vinyl flooring is the same. Newer, higher-end options effectively mimic hardwood while being both more durable and more affordable. "Vinyl has come a long way," Arruda says, noting that in the past, she would reserve the synthetic flooring for basement or laundry-room projects. But innovative printing technology means todays vinyl flooring works well in just about any room. When shopping for vinyl, think "the more texture the better," suggests Arruda, "because that is what's going to most closely resemble solid wood and bring that warmth into your home." Lifeproof's beautiful wood-emulating floors, exclusively sold at The Home Depot, feature variegated colors and grain patterns. Some favorites include Fresh Oak, resembling natural oak with knots and distinctive graining; Trail Oak, a warmer, more rustic style; Vesinet Oak, which is light and Scandinavian-inspired, and the popular Dusk Cherry. Lifeproof's luxury planks are scratch- and stain-resistant and can withstand a beating, making them especially great for active families with kids and pets. (Let the Nerf battles begin!) The low-maintenance finish is also easy to cleanjust sweep, vacuum, or damp-mop as usualand 100 percent waterproof. Dreaming of a spa-like bathroom complete with soothing wood floors? These planks won't warp like most natural woods and laminates. Another bonus: You don't need to hire a contractor to put in vinyl flooring, which is constructed for easy DIY installation. Just clear your schedule and then drop, lock, and tap each piece of the interlocking design into place. (Of course, if handiwork isn't your thing, you can also take advantage of The Home Depot's breezy delivery and installation services.)The Home DepotEngineered Hardwood: Gorgeous and Earth-FriendlyIf the beauty of real wood is non-negotiable, but your bank account can't quite cash that check, you'll be happy to know there's a happy medium: engineered hardwood flooring, which is constructed using a thin hardwood plank glued to thick plywood or fiberboard underlay. The result achieves the look and feel of hardwood but is far more budget-friendly.One common misconception about this type of flooring is that it can't ever be refinished. In truth, it simply can't be sanded down as often as hardwood. Depending on the quality of your flooring, you can resurface the planks between one to three times over their lifetime. And since it doesnt expand and contract as much as solid wood, it's "totally fine for a wet room, like a kitchen or bath," says Arruda. One more plus: The manufacture of engineered wood makes use of fewer trees than are cut down for true hardwood flooring, making it more environmentally friendly. From The Home Depot's vast selection of engineered-wood flooring, Arruda is a big fan of Home Decorators Collection in Kensington, a wide plank with a hickory top layer featuring knots and streaks. "I love the texture and the natural grain," she says. Shes also drawn to the rich palette, which reflects the overall interior-design trend toward deep, elegant brownsHome Decorators Collection in Hayes Mill Oak is another example. (But fear not, lovers of minimalist Scandi decor: Arruda says our love affair with blond woods isnt going anywhere, as evidenced by options like Home Decorators Collection in Wymill Hickory.) Hospitality scaleup Mews, based at TNW City in Amsterdam, has secured $75mn in its third major cash injection of the last year. The round follows a raise of $100M in credit financing in September and a $110mn equity round in March 2024 when the startup became a unicorn. • Hands-On: PolarPros new LiteChaser 16 Slim Where minimalism meets professional filters
    9to5mac.com
Image: PolarPro/Ryan CantyPolarPro has announced its new LiteChaser 16 Slim case for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. PolarPro was kind enough to send over both a case and a full set of their filters to check it out. While Im normally a no-case kind of guy, the added filter attachments might just switch me over for when Im around town and need to scratch my photography itch.If you dont know who PolarPro is, theyre best known for their professional camera filters and matte boxes. However, they have brought those filters to the iPhone, giving you all the same quality but in a small enough package to equip onto your phone. In the past, PolarPro has tailored its phone cases to the ultra video-focused users who want the ease of just using their iPhone, but the perks of a fully modular system youd find on a professional kit. The LiteChaser 16 Pro features 1/4 inch threads for tripods or other attachments, a hand grip, and the SlideLock mount for your camera filters. The Slim version of this case changes the market up a bit. What is the PolarPro LiteChaser 16 Pro Slim?Ditching the bulk of its BaseCase and ProCase siblings, the LiteChaser 16 Pro Slim removes the grip and 1/4 inch threads, slimming the case down as a whole. Rather than looking or feeling like a case designed for the harshest conditions, it feels more like a traditional MagSafe case from Apple. Perfect for walks around town or as an everyday case.If it actually werent for the SlideLock mount on the front, you would probably just think it was a normal iPhone case. However, the SlideLock is a crucial part of the case as it offers you access to PolarPros wide option of camera filters to easily slide in front of your camera. The extra locking feature and button release help ensure the filter wont come loose while youre capturing your shot. What filters are supported?PolarPro brings its filter experience to the iPhone with high quality and easy-to-use variable ND, mist, and FX filters. The most useful for my sort of content has been the large variable neutral density filter, which goes from a 2ND to a 5ND. This helps block out bright lights that could overexpose your shot. Perfect for the summer months when you might spend more days outside in the bright sun. While the FX lenses, which are fun to use, only allow use of the main camera, the VND, mist, UV, and circular polarizer filters support all three lenses at once. Below is a full list of filters you can purchase from PolarPro:Filters that support all three camerasUV FilterCircular PolarizerBlack MistGold MistShortStache Everyday Filter (Combo of the polarizer and black mist)ShortStache Mist-PLVND 2-5VND 2-5 Black MistFX Lenses that only support the main cameraWarp 1x (Adds halo rings around the edges of the photo)Warp 2xSplit WarpRefract (Adds a kaleidoscope effect)Shifty (Mirrors center of image on either side)All the filters are extremely fun to use in creative ways and are super high quality as you would expect from PolarPro. The SlideLock attachment point makes changing out filters super easy and quick.Full MagSafe support, moreThe case itself feels like a cross between a hard plastic case and soft silicone. So while it might not keep it safe in extreme circumstances, it will likely do the job for short drops and regular wear and tear. While the camera filters are the main selling point of the LiteChaser 16 Slim, it is also a full-featured iPhone case. This includes full MagSafe compatibility with added magnets for increased strength. The case fully encloses all of the buttons of the iPhone 16 but excludes the touch-sensitive Camera Control bar and the charging port. The LiteChaser 16 Slim also comes in multiple colors: Black, Ocean Blue, Seafoam Green, and Purple. I received the black option, but DroneDJs Jared Sanders received the green, and the vibrant colors look amazing. Is the PolarPro LiteChaser 16 Slim worth buying?PolarPros LiteChaser lineup of cases has always been designed for the creative iPhone owners. Those who could use a full camera but instead choose the simplicity of making their iPhone their camera. The array of filters brings the versatility you can only get with a full-size camera down to your phone. So if thats you, and you dont want or need the extra accessories that come with its BaseCase or ProCase options, then the LiteChaser 16 Slim is perfect for you. The slimmed-down design makes it pass as an everyday case, but when you need the filters, its just an easy add.The PolarPro LiteChaser 16 Slim case starts at $49.99 for both the Pro and Pro Max. You can also get the Cinematic Kit that includes the VND 2-5 for $99.99.Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links.
