3D printer OEM Stratasys (NASDAQ: SYSS) has announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2024 (Q4 2024) and full year 2024 (FY 2024).The results reflect a challenging year marked by revenue declines but offset by improving gross margins and a growing emphasis on high-value applications. For FY 2024, Stratasys reported revenue of $572.5 million, an 8.8% drop from $627.6 million in FY 2023. Q4 2024 revenue came in at $150.4 million, down 3.8% from the same period in 2023 but up 7.4% sequentially from Q3.While overall sales softened due to macroeconomic headwinds and constrained capital spending, the company maintained strong customer engagement and saw an increase in manufacturing applications, which accounted for 36% of total revenue, up from 34% in 2023.Despite revenue pressures, Stratasys improved profitability through cost efficiencies. Gross margins expanded to 44.9% for FY 2024, up from 42.5% in the previous year, while Q4 gross margins rose to 46.3%, compared to 44.7% in Q4 2023.The company attributed this improvement to operational streamlining, pricing strategies, and an increasing focus on higher-margin products and services. Adjusted EBITDA for Q4 surged to $14.5 million, an 88.8% Y/Y increase, as cost-cutting measures took full effect.Dr. Yoav Zeif, Stratasys Chief Executive Officer, stated, In 2024 and early 2025, we took several key steps to enhance our leadership and strengthen our position at the forefront of additive manufacturing. We took decisive actions to optimize our business while maintaining our ability to scale rapidly as conditions improve. • Innovation Brings Islands Together To Solve Critical Challenges

James Ellsmoor, CEO of Island Innovation, moderated and participated in multiple panels at COP29 in ... [+] Baku, Azerbaijan. Here, he leads the discussion on "Response to Climate Change: The Special Case of Small Island UK Overseas Territories Finance for Innovation and Research," hosted by the UK Overseas Territories Association (UKOTA) in the UK Pavilion. Panelists included Minister Mary Creagh, Hon. Dr. John Cortes MP, Professor Dr. Matt Frost, and CCJLAs Noelle Young.Island InnovationJames Ellsmoor moves briskly through the Blue Zone at COP29 in Baku, stopping to exchange words with delegates many of them stakeholders from island nations who recognize him in passing. Now attending his seventh UN Climate Summit, he is here for a specific mission: ensuring that islands many of which are on the front lines of climate change have a seat at the table. If youre in New York, London, or Brussels, convening decision-makers is relatively straightforward stakeholders are either local or can travel on short notice, he says. But if you're in Nuku'alofa, Mah, or Bridgetown, how do you participate in global discussions? These are communities that are actively being affected by climate change and developing solutions that can be replicated in other jurisdictions, but they have far fewer opportunities to meet with relevant stakeholders in those jurisdictions. That's where Island Innovation comes in.A renewable energy expert turned consultant and entrepreneur, Ellsmoor has become a key player in island-focused policy discussions. From climate summits in Antigua & Barbuda to sustainability congresses in the Faroe Islands and St. Lucia, to the UNs largest annual climate negotiations, he has built a reputation as a connector bridging the gap between island communities and global decision-makers.His company, Island Innovation, operates as a consultancy, a knowledge platform, and a convener, working with governments and island stakeholders to transform local expertise into scalable, global solutions. As climate risks accelerate, Ellsmoors work is proving increasingly essential in ensuring that the worlds islands are not just heard but actively shaping the future of climate resilience.Islands Resilient by NecessityIslands face distinct challenges in todays world. Geographic isolation, limited infrastructure, and smaller economies often mean reduced access to resources, technology, and opportunities that mainland communities take for granted. Yet these very constraints have driven island communities to develop remarkable resilience and innovative solutions, particularly in sustainability. For centuries, islanders have relied on the land and sea, building thriving communities in remote and often harsh environments with only the resources at hand. This necessity has fostered a deep understanding of resource management and sustainability skills that mainland communities, with greater access to external support, have rarely needed to develop. The climate crisis that defines this modern era presents yet another challenge an existential one, but the solutions being offered are not fit for purpose. The climate solutions designed for island nations are often developed in wealthier countries where resources are abundant, regulations are strictly enforced, and the environment is stable and predictable, Ellsmoor explains. These approaches rarely reflect the realities of island communities or the innovation needed to address their unique challenges. Many island communities already have the knowledge to sustain themselves theyve been doing it for generations. What they need most is adequate funding to scale local projects and efficient knowledge-sharing of successful models from similar environments, he nods with a half-smile. Island solutions, created by islanders, for islanders. You dont have to look far to find examples of homegrown expertise solving local challenges.Take agriculture and fisheries, for instance sectors that are pioneering new approaches to food security in some of the worlds most vulnerable regions.CEO, James Ellsmoor and Director of Projects, Grace Henry take the floor to talk about Island ... [+] InnovationIsland InnovationIslands Rethink Conservation and Food SecurityFor island nations often called "big-ocean states" due to their expansive maritime territories and comparatively small land and resources environmental stewardship must be balanced with the need for viable industries, food security, and economic resilience. So when Palaus Prime Minister, Surangel Whipps Jr. announced that the country would reduce their marine sanctuary target from 80% to 30%, a global outcry denounced the move as a step backwards for international conservation. On paper, this decision made little sense, but as Whipps pointed out, [The original target] wasnt based on science, it wasn't based on any data, it was just that we felt good about it. So we set it at 80%. People are stuck on percentages when really what... everybody should be working toward is 100% managed, that's what we should be working toward."Palaus previous policy, though well-intentioned, had unintended economic consequences. According to the Whipps administration, the exclusion of commercial fishing from 80% of its waters strained the countrys fisheries sector, weakened food security, and impacted revenues. Enforcing protection over an area roughly the size of Spain proved logistically impossible. By scaling back to a more manageable target and partnering with The Nature Conservancy to modernize its fisheries industry, Palau is betting on a more sustainable long-term approach one that balances conservation with economic reality.Fishing boat in Peleliu Island, Palau. In 2015, Palau set a global standard for ocean conservation ... [+] by banning foreign fishing in its waters. However, the economic fallout sparked debate among locals some see reopening to commercial fishing as necessary for financial stability, while others fear it could undermine hard-won environmental gains.gettyPalaus re-calibration reflects a broader trend among island nations: pragmatism over idealism. In the Caribbean, a similar shift is taking place in agriculture, where hydroponic farming is gaining traction as a scalable solution to climate-related food insecurity. A pilot program in Anguilla, Barbados, and the Cayman Islands is demonstrating how controlled-environment agriculture can mitigate extreme heat and unpredictable weather.According to Fork Farms, the Flex Farms hydroponic technology offers unrivaled efficiency, scalability, and transformation. Outside of its ability to yield more than 25 pounds of fresh leafy greens within a short 28-day time frame, the setup has been optimized to recycle as much water, soil and fertilizer as possible while being incredibly energy and space-efficient. These properties make the technology perfectly suited for deployment on islands where energy, water, and space constraints are a real issue.Beyond increasing local food production, hydroponic systems create skilled jobs, strengthen supply chains, and reduce reliance on costly food imports. For island nations that import up to 80% of their food, solutions like these provide an opportunity to build a more self-sufficient and resilient agricultural sector.Protecting biodiversity is just as critical to food security as expanding food production. The Pacific Community (SPC)'s Centre for Pacific Crops and Trees (CePaCT), a regional seed bank based in Suva, Fiji, is working to preserve the genetic diversity of staple crops to help island nations adapt to climate change.CePaCTs collection of over 2,200 crop varieties acts as an insurance policy against food insecurity, with seedlings routinely sent to neighboring islands to bolster resilience against extreme weather and disease outbreaks. Without active protection, these unique genetic resources that we depend on for our food needs [...] will disappear forever, warns Logotonu Meleisea Waqainabete, Programme Leader for Genetic Resources at SPC.Crossbreeding programs at CePaCT have already yielded hardier, climate-resilient crop varieties suited to island environments an effort that earned the program an Island Innovation Award. The Centre for Pacific Crops and Trees (CePaCT) safeguards the genetic diversity of key Pacific ... [+] crops and tree species, ensuring long-term conservation while promoting underutilized crops to enhance regional food security and resilience.Centre for Pacific Crops and Trees (CePaCT) Despite progress, island nations still face a major hurdleknowledge-sharing. While Caribbean and Pacific initiatives are making waves, scalable solutions remain scattered across regions.A more structured network connecting island nations could accelerate sustainability efforts, reduce redundancy, and improve resilience. With climate change intensifying economic and environmental pressures, islands that adapt pragmatically prioritizing both conservation and economic stability will be best positioned for the future.Building Virtual Bridges Across IslandsJames Ellsmoor with Sir Alok Sharma, Member of the House of Lords of the United Kingdom at Island of ... [+] Hope at COP28Island Innovation"By creating digital bridges virtual spaces and online events for stakeholders to share expertise on island issuesthe potential for breakthroughs, innovation, and impactful partnerships grows exponentially," Ellsmoor explains. "Island Innovations communications network and open-access virtual events have been doing this long before the COVID-era shift to online platforms."What began in 2018 as a newsletter for sustainability practitioners on islands has grown into a knowledge network and global consultancy working with governments and intergovernmental agencies to build capacity and drive sustainable solutions. At its core, Island Innovation addresses a critical gap: the lack of opportunities for island leaders to collaborate across geographic boundaries. Its flagship Virtual Island Summit (VIS) exemplifies this approach. The inaugural event drew 3,000 participants; today, it attracts over 10,000 annual registrations, featuring heads of state, government officials, and island experts worldwide. In her 2022 VIS opening speech, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley underscored its significance: The ability for leaders and experts of island nations to come together on the basis of our shared experiences during this climate crisis is of great importance not just to us who live in island nations, but indeed to the entire world.Beyond fostering dialogue, Island Innovation amplifies underrepresented voices and expands access to climate adaptation and sustainable development discussions. "Many take for granted the tools and opportunities for engagement that are not readily available everywhere," says Ellsmoor. "Spaces like COP are often the only times island leaders and remote communities can connect in person. A virtual platform helps level the playing field, making these conversations more inclusive."Island Innovation also provides strategic expertise, including media outreach for the High Ambition Coalitions regional 30x30 campaign, communications strategy support for UNDP Pacifics renewable energy initiatives, and pathways for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) researchers and climate activists to engage in global forums.Islands Coming Together To Drive Global ChangeIn response to audience demand, Island Innovation now holds an annual in-person conference covering key sustainability challenges and solutions on islands. Co-hosted and organized alongside local governments, the conference is held in a different island region each year. This years edition is being held in St. Kitts and Nevis following successful iterations in Prince Edward Island (Canada), and Madeira (Portugal). In just a few years, Island Innovation has evolved from a digital content aggregator to a driving force in island resilience efforts. What began as a solo venture is now a full-fledged organization with 18 staff members most from islands and all working remotely using the same digital tools the organization promotes. Our team isnt just working on island issues we live them, says Ellsmoor. That perspective is what makes Island Innovation so effective: island solutions for islanders, by islanders. The worlds islands hold a wealth of knowledge and innovation from Palaus fisheries transformation to the Caribbeans hydroponic expansion and CePaCTs agricultural future-proofing. But in the face of escalating climate risks, their resilience is being tested like never before. To safeguard their future, island nations must do more than implement solutions they must share them. By strengthening connections and pooling expertise, they can maximize limited resources, scale impact, and shape a more sustainable future.Members of the Island innovation team having fun in AzerbaiajnIsland innovation

Instead, it's just filling in the blanks between existing facts what he called "manifold filling."Wolf argues that for AI to drive real scientific breakthroughs, it needs to do more than retrieve and synthesize information. AI should question its own training data, take counterintuitive approaches, generate new ideas from minimal input, and ask unexpected questions that open new research paths.Wolf also weighed in on the idea of a "compressed 21st century" a concept from an October essay by Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei, "Machine of Loving Grace." Amodei wrote that AI could accelerate scientific progress so much that discoveries expected over the next 100 years could happen in just five to 10."I read this essay twice. The first time I was totally amazed: AI will change everything in science in five years, I thought!" Wolf wrote on X. "Re-reading it, I realized that much of it seemed like wishful thinking at best."Unless AI research shifts gears, Wolf warned, we won't get a new Albert Einstein in a data center just a future filled with "yes-men on servers."Wolf did not respond to a request for comment, sent outside standard business hours. The rise of agentic AIWolf's comments come as the AI world focuses on agentic AI.Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has predicted that this may be the year the first "agents" a set of artificial intelligence tools that can perform tasks independently "join the workforce.""If 2024 was the year of LLMs, we believe 2025 will be the year of agentic AI," Praveen Akkiraju told Business Insider in January. He's a managing director at Insight Partners, a VC firm whose agentic plays include Writer, Jasper, and Torq.Investors are betting big on this idea. According to PitchBook data, startups exploring the application of agents raised $8.2 billion last year.Unlike AI assistants, which mainly retrieve and summarize information, agents can break down complex tasks, make decisions, and refine their approach based on outcomes.Researchers have also used AI to achieve scientific breakthroughs.Oxford professor Matthew Higgins used AlphaFold2, an AI tool from Alphabet-owned DeepMind, to crack the shape of a key malaria protein something his lab had struggled with for years. That breakthrough led to an experimental malaria vaccine being tested in people.Without AlphaFold, "we'd probably still be trying, to be honest," Higgins told BI in 2023.

And any US alcohol they buy could get more expensive: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday said he would impose retaliatory 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of American goods.Eric Gregory, the president of the Kentucky Distillers' Association, said in a Tuesday statement on X that retaliatory tariffs would have "far-reaching consequences across Kentucky, home to 95% of the world's bourbon."Canada's retaliatory measures will "jeopardize growth for years," he said.Gregory's statement comes as several Canadian provinces have clamped down on US-made alcohol this week. Provinces like Ontario and New Brunswick instructed state-affiliated alcohol retailers, which regulate the sale and distribution of alcohol in their regions, to pull US products from their shelves.Ontario's government instructed the Liquor Control Board of Ontario to "immediately" cease imports of US alcohol and stop selling American products, the LCBO said on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the government of New Brunswick said on Facebook that it would not purchase any new US alcohol products. The government said it had removed US-made alcohol products from the shelves of Alcool NB, a government-affiliated alcohol retailer.Quebec followed suit. The Socit des alcools du Qubec, a government-run alcohol retailer, said in a Wednesday X post that it was wiping all US products from branches and its website "at the request of the Qubec government."Before the trade war kicked off, Canada was a large importer of Kentucky-made spirits. The Canada-Kentucky agricultural trade totaled $691 million in 2023, with Kentucky exporting $43 million worth of whiskey to Canada that year, the Canadian government said on its official site.AndPaul Coomes, a professor of economics at the University of Louisville, wrote in a 2023 report that Canada was the biggest importer of Kentucky-made spirits in 2022.It's not just Kentucky bourbon makers who lamented Canada's retaliatory measures.Lawson Whiting, the CEO of Brown-Forman, the parent company of Jack Daniel's, said on a Wednesday earnings call that the retaliation was "worse than a tariff" and a "disproportionate response" to Trump's tariffs. In June, the company said in its annual report that Canada accounted for 1% of total sales, while 45% came from the US.Trump said in early February that he would impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada. The shrine enshrines a deity widely revered at a well-known shrine in the Kansai region, and the building itself holds a deep connection with the local community.Save this picture! For us, this was a rare and meaningful opportunity to work on a project involving a sacred space, following a previous commission to design a residence for a former head representative of Ise Jingu. This building has been cherished not only by its residents but also by the local community and worshippers over many years.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! Our design approach carefully respected the purpose and historical significance of the building while aiming to create a space that harmonizes with modern living. The finishes, predominantly plasterwork, were thoughtfully reintroduced to honor the existing textures and materials, resulting in surfaces that gently embrace the light. By maximizing the use of natural light through the openings, the interior is bathed in a play of light that shifts throughout the day, adding depth and character to the space. This creates a warm and tranquil environment where comfort and serenity coexist.Save this picture!Save this picture! The garden was carefully restructured by removing unnecessary elements and restoring its original beauty. This meticulous effort highlights the garden's inherent charm and ensures a harmonious integration with the building. The revitalized garden brings a sense of calm and tranquility to the overall space.Save this picture!Save this picture! We closely collaborated with the client to realize their vision, focusing on creating a comfortable environment that supports daily life and childcare. While honoring the history and spirituality embedded in this site, we have shaped a space that bridges generations, offering a new stage for living that connects the past with the future.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeKoyoriOfficePublished on March 07, 2025Cite: "The House in Shgoin / Koyori" 07 Mar 2025.
