• Damn, the First Electric State Reactions Have Been Brutal
    gizmodo.com
Few things get the internet going like a movie that gets all the critical lashes. If you thought reactions toBorderlandslast year were bad, those forThe Electric Statemay set a new bar. Netflixs upcoming sci-fi action film from the Russo brothers and starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt doesnt hit until next week. But those who got to see it early are now sharing their thoughts and hoo boy, they aint kind. Our own Germain Lussier didnt review it, but he considered among the most average of the Russos work, so take from that what you will. But at time of writing, Electric Statehas a Rotten Tomatoes consensus of 27%, their third-lowest rated film ahead ofA Merry Friggin Christmas(14%) and You, Me, & Dupree (20%.). Prior to that, it was 10%, which wouldve made for their worst-reviewed film ever. Yeesh. Weve posted some impressions below for you to laugh (or wince) at the spectacle of it all. For the most part, this sounds like a stinker that cant even be saved by cool-looking robots. Thats a shame, since folks really dug Simon Stlenhags popular graphic novel Electric Stateis based on. That the movie is an incoherent mess is disappointing on its own, but its even sadder when you learn its budget was reportedly over $300 million, making it one of the most expensive movies ever made. Good thing the Russos are gearing up to do the next twoAvengersmovies, right? The Electric Statehits Netflix on Friday, March 14so if youre not in theaters watchingNovocaine, Opus, Day the Earth Blew Up,orBlack Bag,you could always watch that and see if its as bad as it sounds. And then come Tuesday, you can act shocked when Netflix calls it the most-watched movie on the platform but givesnohard numbers to back it up. Want more io9 news? This single-family Neo-Tudor home in Park Slope has a rich history of alterations that reflect its evolving use. The goal of this project was to create a modern living space for a couple and their young daughter, while paying homage to some of the home's unique elements.Save this picture! The building was originally built in 1919. It was renovated throughout the 20th century to serve its varied uses, including a doctor's office and a bed and breakfast. To accommodate the mixed occupancies of the building, much of the original exterior detailing had been removed and multiple entrances had been introduced. In the 1990's the house underwent a large renovation which restored the front faade to its original state, to match its twin sister directly next door. Unfortunately, during that last renovation, the remaining original details inside the home were removed.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Rather than re-introduce old details, the new aesthetic is modern and simple. Bleached walnut serves as a unifying element throughout the home, bringing warmth and richness to the minimalist aesthetic. The walnut detail is most prominent on the first floor, where it seamlessly transitions into a curved railing that leads the occupant to the upper levels of the home.Save this picture!Save this picture!Given the home's smaller footprint, storage was integrated into corners and walls of millwork. To delineate the rooms on the first floor a multi-functional piece of millwork was used, which also serves as a pantry, closet, kitchen cupboard, and niche for the dining room bench. Additionally, the homeowners have an extensive book collection which became a major design element throughout the house. A long bookcase on the 1st floor extends almost the entire length of the house. It adds color and liveliness to the space, but also draws the occupant from the living room to the dining room, through to the kitchen where it transforms into a bench.Save this picture!Save this picture! The existing openings at the rear faade were enlarged to visually and physically invite you into the charming backyard garden, and enhance the connection between the home and garden.Save this picture! The primary suite was redesigned to include a large dressing room adjacent to the primary walk-in closet, shower, and wash closet. The primary bedroom was relocated to the back of the house to feel more secluded and removed from the road, and reduced in size to provide a cozier atmosphere. A new, large dormer was added to the Primary Bedroom to create a window bench that looks onto the roof deck and its lush greenery.Save this picture! The Brooklyn Studio collaborated closely with the interior design firm Jesse Parris-Lamb to ensure that the style and character of our design aligned with their interior selections. The result is a cohesive aesthetic that exudes comfort and warmth, yet sophistication and elegance.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeThe Brooklyn StudioOfficePublished on March 08, 2025Cite: "Park Slope Neo-Tudor House / The Brooklyn Studio" 08 Mar 2025. Featured on CGMeetup Gallery https://www.cgmeetup.com/gallery "Red Gaia" traces the existential journey of an AI android on Mars, focusing on how it interacts with the remnants of human civilization to understand and preserve them. The film shows the AI examining artifacts, accessing archived data, and simulating human social and religious practices to grasp their underlying meanings. It also portrays the AIs efforts to sustain the last living tree on Mars, symbolizing its role in ecological preservation. Throughout, the AI's programming evolves, enabling it to question its purpose and the values it was designed to uphold, highlighting its journey towards a potentially autonomous identity.Production details and background on the project"Red Gaia" is my first narrative personal project after 20 years of honing my skills as a designer and visual effects artist.Dedicating nights and weekends, the film was almost entirely self made: researched, written, produced, directed, modeled, animated, lit, rendered and composited. • How Antarcticas Only Native Insect Survives the Extreme Cold
    www.discovermagazine.com
Across the South Poles frozen expanse, there lives only one purely terrestrial animal: a tiny insect called the Antarctic midge. This flightless creature, just 0.2 inches long, has eked out an existence in one of the worlds most unforgiving climates for some 30 million years, since its home continent split off from South America.Researchers have studied these midges for decades, documenting their impressive resistance to extreme conditions. But it was never clear how they endured the frigid polar winter. Now researchers at Japans Osaka University have uncovered the physiological mechanism behind Belgica antarcticas mastery of the cold one thats never been observed in any other species.Cold Temperatures for an Insect Like hibernating bears, many insects slow their bodily processes during the tough winter months. But for them dormancy comes in two distinct flavors. The first, called quiescence, relies on environmental cues when temperatures plummet, metabolism automatically tapers off. The second, called diapause, is genetically programmed to kick in at a specific stage in biological development, regardless of what the weathers doing.Quiescence and obligate diapause have different advantages, and most insect species opt for one or the other. The Antarctic midge, however, employs both during its two-year life cycle. Its an unprecedented combination. Lead author Mizuki Yoshida, now a postdoctoral researcher at Ohio State University, explains that this helps them make the most of the short summers. Its an ingenious strategy. During their first winter, midges go with quiescence because it enables a swift transition between active and inactive lifestyles, as Yoshida and her colleagues wrote. They wake up whenever temperatures rise above a certain threshold, allowing them to maximally exploit these balmy periods for feeding and growth.Going Dormant for DevelopmentThat works great for the first year, when every individual is just wandering alone in search of a meal. But the second winter complicates things: Once its over, an entire generation must come out at once, ready to reproduce in the few days they have left on Earth. If they arent synchronized, it could spell doom for the species. The problem is that thousands of midges dont necessarily mature at the same rate. If they were all plunged into quiescence without warning one autumn day, due to a sudden drop in temperature, theyd be caught in various stages of development. And then, come summer, theyd emerge in those various stages, many of them still sexually immature.Obligate diapause solves this by ensuring that the whole population goes dormant just before pupation, the final transformation from larva to adult. Each midge follows its own timeline, with late bloomers waiting longer than their precocious counterparts to bed down for the winter. That way they all emerge on the same developmental schedule when the snow melts, and glorious reproductive success ensues.Surviving Extreme ConditionsNo other insect is known to switch between quiescence and obligate diapause. But under the right circumstances it seems like a logical game plan, given the peculiar demands of an inhospitably cold environment. In fact, Yoshida suggests that it could be a common strategy for species living not just in Antarctica, but also in Arctic and alpine zones. It may be a while till thats confirmed, though, considering it took the Osaka team 6 years to establish a method for rearing Antarctic midges in the lab (ironically for such hardy creatures, Yoshida says it was difficult to determine what temperatures they preferred). So for now they stand in a class of their own and their adaptability is a testament, as the authors put it, to the resilience of this species in the face of extreme challenges.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards. • Stardew Valley: Why You Should Start Over in 2025
    gamerant.com
Despite turning nine years old in 2025, Stardew Valley still holds up surprisingly well. Not only was the game a hit when it first came out on PC, and again when it was released on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and mobile platforms, but since then, Stardew Valley has continued to dominate the sub-genre of cozy, farming sims thanks to a steady stream of post-launch updates and community mods. Especially for players who havent experienced some of the latest improvements and additions for Stardew Valley, 2025 seems like the perfect time to return for another playthrough.

  • The Best Sacrifices In Squid Game
    gamerant.com
Squid Game became a worldwide phenomenon for many reasons, one of the biggest being its innate unpredictability. It truly feels like no character in this dystopian thriller is safe, and that all of them could die at any minute. If that wasnt enough, many of them have tragically sacrificed themselves for the sake of others.
