Urban islands are an important part of the history of the city of Porto, having been a very common type of housing in the city from the 19th century onwards. They were composed of semi-detached houses, built in the long patio of the bourgeois houses. They were small houses, usually with a door and a window facing the access corridor through which all the other houses that made up the island were distributed.Save this picture!Originally, urban islands were built to house the working poor and their families, who moved to the city in search of work. Over the years, urban islands have become overcrowded and unhealthy, with poor living conditions.Save this picture! In the 1970s, the Portuguese government started a rehousing program, with the aim of demolishing the urban islands and relocating their inhabitants in social neighbourhoods that were built on the outskirts of the city. Although many of the islands have been destroyed, many others still remain in the city as part of its memory, trying to renew itself in the perspective of contradicting the more impersonal side that often defines social neighbourhoods.Save this picture! It is precisely in this attempt that this project arises, an opportunity to rethink housing in these unique and historic spaces of the city. The base is one of those typical semi-detached houses on urban islands, measuring 4 meters across, 4 meters deep, with two floors, 3 windows and a door.Save this picture! The proposed intervention is divided over the two floors of the house, which are interconnected through a contemporary staircase that transports us from the public space - living room and kitchen - to the private space - bedroom and bathroom.Save this picture! The living room and kitchen are a single space, punctuated by one of the house's windows and strongly marked by the presence of the staircase, which starts at the counter in the kitchen and ends in a black volume through which we reach the upper floor. Here is the bedroom that cohabits with a camouflaged bathroom in a mirrored volume that expands the space and reflects the light that enters through the two windows.Save this picture!Save this picture! The existing stone walls are painted white, increasing the luminosity inside, to which contemporary elements in a contrasting color are juxtaposed, giving each house a unique identity.Save this picture! From the outside, the intervention is denoted by the black volume that enunciates the entrance door, as well as by the contrasting color of the new shutters placed on each of the windows.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officespaceworkersOfficeMaterialsMaterials and TagsPublished on March 09, 2025Cite: "Covelo House / spaceworkers" [Casa Covelo / spaceworkers] 09 Mar 2025. • Death Stranding 2 gets June 2025 release date, huge new trailer at SXSW
    www.polygon.com
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will be released on June 26 for PlayStation 5, game director and Kojima Productions founder Hideo Kojima announced Sunday during a panel at SXSW 2025 with a lengthy new trailer for the game. That trailer offered a new 10-minute look at Death Stranding 2 and its stars, including some fresh faces. The sequel to the 2019 action game will once again star Norman Reedus as Sam Bridges, the package-toting hero of its bizarre story. La Seydoux and Troy Baker will return too, as Fragile and Higgs, respectively. Theyll be joined by new characters played by Elle Fanning (Tomorrow), Shioli Kutsuna (Rainy), and George Miller (Tarman). Also joining the cast are Luca Marinelli as Neil, Debra Wilson as Doctor, and Alissa Jung as Lucy. (Theres also a cameo from Korean action star Lee Dong-seok, aka Don Lee.)Death Stranding 2s new trailer even appears to have a handful of nods to Kojimas previous game franchise, Metal Gear Solid. Marinellis Neil looks unmistakably like Solid Snake at one point, with the giant tar creature that fuses with the DHV Magellan becoming the Magellan Man, Kojima said giving Metal Gear Rex/Sahelanthropus vibes. Beyond that, theres plenty of gameplay action and story hints to chew on for Death Stranding fans.Kojima Productions new trailer explains that Death Stranding 2 is set 11 months after the formation of the United Cities of America. Servers line the beach and deliveries have been automated, ostensibly putting porters like Sam out of work. Chiralium from the Beach continues to warp the environment (and the cats!), just as a new faction is spreading its influence. But none of that, it seems, will stop Sam from doing his job.For more insight into Death Stranding 2, check out Kojima Productions and PlayStations special panel from SXSW 2025.In Death Stranding 2s first trailer at 2022s The Game Awards, Kojima said his experiences during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic prompted him to rework the games script, which will follow the events of the first games journey across a post-apocalyptic America ravaged by inky black monsters known as Beached Things. The second, 10-minute trailer from a State of Play stream last year showed the delivery company Bridges worked for has dissolved and a new organization called Drawbridge has risen in its place. But as with all Kojima-led games, the exact details are murky.A live-action Death Stranding movie was announced in 2022 and picked up by renowned film production house A24 in 2023. The film will take place in the same world, but wont directly recreate the events of the first game, Kojima said at the time of the original announcement.Death Stranding 2 has only been announced for PlayStation 5, but a PC version could appear later if Sonys trend of delayed ports continues.

  • UX design is like diet and exerciseessential, yet easily ignored
    uxdesign.cc
UX is like diet and exerciseessential, yet easilyignoredIn our quest for success, we chase quick fixeswhether through drugs or technologygaining convenience but risking consequences.Image created using AdobeFireflyEveryone knows that diet and exercise are fundamental for good health. People understand that eating well and staying active lead to a longer, healthier life. Yet, despite this knowledge, most people struggle to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The reasons varysome lack discipline, others get discouraged by slow progress, and many are simply overwhelmed by the effort required. Many businesses treat user experience (UX) the same way. They recognize that great UX leads to better customer satisfaction, stronger brand loyalty, and even increased revenue. But when it comes time to invest, UX often falls by the wayside, sacrificed for immediate profits, tight deadlines, or the belief that its goodenough. Why diets failand UX doestooThe struggle with dieting isnt about a lack of knowledge. People know that eating whole foods and exercising work. The real challenge is that results taketime.A single bad meal doesnt cause weight gain overnight, just as a bad UX decision doesnt immediately sink a product. The impact accumulates until the damage is undeniable.True UX success isnt about tweaking a few buttons or running a single usability testits a continuous process of research, iteration, and refinement. But businesses, like dieters, are impatient. When UX doesnt deliver instant results, its often dismissed.Image source: https://cameron.econ.ucdavis.edu/excel/ex02windows.htmlTake Microsofts Ribbon interface in Office 2007. It replaced traditional menus with a tabbed design meant to make features easier to find. At first, usersincluding Microsoft employeeshated it. It felt confusing and unnecessary. But over time, people adapted, and it actually made Office more efficient. Today, its a standard design in Microsoft products.Just like in dieting, impatience in UX can make us overlook whats ultimately good for us. When results arent immediate, we risk abandoning meaningful improvements before they have a chance towork. The one-size-fits-all mythHealth challenges are made harder by a market flooded with diet and exercise trendsketo, vegan, HIIT, strength trainingeach claiming to be the best. But no single method works for everyone. Success depends on consistency, discipline, and understanding ones ownbody.UX is no different. Theres no universal methodlean UX, design thinking, double diamond, and agile all have their advocatesbut real success comes from adapting to user needs, staying consistent with design principles, and understanding the problem youresolving. And just as diet and exercise alone arent always enough with factors like metabolism, psychology, and environment playing a rolegood UX isnt just about adhering to strict methodologies or implementing structured interfaces and intuitive navigation.Even well-researched, methodical approaches can fall short if they dont account for unique user contexts, emerging behaviors, or unexpected challenges. True UX success requires adaptability, experimentation, and a willingness to rethink conventional wisdom.Image source: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/google-glass-project-doomed-fail-antonio-nieto-rodriguez/Google Glass is a prime example of how even well-researched UX can fail if it doesnt account for real-world contexts. While the technology was cutting-edge, Google overlooked how users would feel wearing a head-mounted camera in public. Privacy concerns, unclear use cases, and social resistance led to its failure as a consumerproduct. However, by adapting to user needs, Google repositioned Glass for enterprise settings, where hands-free functionality proved valuable. This shift highlights the importance of UX flexibility, real-world testing, and a willingness to rethink initial assumptions.Image Source: Mario Tama/Getty ImagesThe shortcut solutionhow AI is becoming the Ozempic ofUXRecently, the weight loss industry has seen a radical shift. The most successful approach to losing weight isnt stricter dieting or better exercise routinesits drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. These medications fundamentally alter how the body processes hunger, allowing people to lose weight without the grueling discipline of traditional dieting.UX may be on the verge of its own shortcut moment. Artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, and automation tools are transforming the way digital experiences are designed. Instead of extensive research phases and painstaking user testing, AI can analyze user behavior in real time, predict pain points, and automatically optimize interfaces and experiences.Take e-commerce, for example. Instead of months of testing and user research, AI can instantly tweak checkout flows, optimize layouts, and personalize experiences. Just like Ozempic simplifies weight loss, AI is streamlining UX.Image source: GettyImagesFor example, Dynamic Yield (owned by Mastercard) leverages advanced deep learning algorithms, originally developed for McDonalds, to continuously test and optimize digital menuboards. These AI-driven recommendations enhance the Recommended Items and Suggestive Sell sections in real time, adapting to customer preferences, time of day, and purchasing patterns for a more personalized experience. As AI takes on more of the heavy lifting, businesses that once struggled to prioritize UX may now embrace itnot out of newfound discipline, but because AI reduces the effort required. But these shortcuts come with their own pitfalls. The hidden costs of shortcutsShortcuts are seductive, but they come with trade-offs. Weight loss drugs, while effective, and necessary for some, dont teach better eating habits or the importance of long-term health. Some even experience side effects, and the weight often returns once they stop taking the medication. In UX, AI-driven tools can be transformative, but they arent perfect. Automated systems optimize based on patterns and data, but they lack the human touch. They can predict behavior, but they dont understand emotion.A purely AI-driven UX strategy risks prioritizing engagement over ethical design, efficiency over genuine delight, and metrics over meaningful experiences.Theres also the danger of over-reliance. Just as people who depend entirely on weight loss drugs may struggle once they stop, businesses that lean too heavily on AI may lose sight of the deeper principles of human-centered design.A prime example of a failed AI strategy is McDonalds AI-powered drive-thru system, which relied on voice recognition for order-taking. This system was separate from the previously mentioned Dynamic YieldAI.https://medium.com/media/600938c74dfd18af4a301bd14145ad6d/hrefPartnering with IBM in 2021, McDonalds aimed to streamline the efficiency of drive-thru transactions, but the AI had an 85% accuracy rate, meaning it misinterpreted about one in five orders. Viral videos from 2023 highlighted errors, such as the system adding random items to orders, leading to frequent employee intervention and slowing service rather than improving it.Due to these issues, McDonalds removed the system from over 100 locations in June 2024, showing the risks of over-relying on AI without a solid backupplan. The future Is enhancement, not replacementThe evolution of weight management isnt just about medicationits about combining medical breakthroughs with sustainable lifestyle changes. Similarly, AI isnt here to replace UX designers but to enhance their creativity, problem-solving, and decision-making rather than dictate the entire designprocess.AI can handle tedious, repetitive tasks like generating wireframes, analyzing user behavior, and optimizing layouts based on data. However, it lacks empathy, intuition, and the ability to understand cultural context or human emotionsall essential for creating meaningful user experiences. The businesses that succeed wont be the ones blindly following AI-generated designs, but those that leverage AI as a tool to support human expertiseallowing designers to focus on strategy, innovation, and refining the nuances AI cantgrasp.Just as lasting health improvements require both medication and behavior changes, great UX will come from blending AIs efficiency with human insight, creativity, and ethical judgment. In the end, theres no true shortcut to exceptional UXjust smarter, more effective ways to achieveit.Dont miss out!
