Forza Horizon 5 on PS5 causes uproar as Xbox upsets PlayStation fansAdam StarkeyPublished March 10, 2025 12:56pmUpdated March 10, 2025 1:33pm Forza Horizon 5 comes out on PS5 next month (Xbox Game Studios)Xboxs multiformat ports continue to have some annoying wrinkles, as Forza Horizon 5 on PS5 raises concerns about game preservation.Forza Horizon 5 is the latest Xbox game to make its way to PlayStation 5 as part of Microsofts multiplatform strategy and while that is great news for anyone who doesnt own an Xbox, some of the ports have come with a few problems. One bugbear is the lack of physical versions for several of these Xbox ports, with Hi-Fi Rush, Sea Of Thieves, and Forza Horizon 5 all being digital-only on PlayStation 5. The others, like Grounded and Pentiment, got physical versions but only through specialist retailer Limited Run.Another annoyance is the inconsistent need for a Microsoft account to play, which applies to Sea Of Thieves and will also be mandatory for Forza Horizon 5.An FAQ on the games website reads: In addition to a PSN account youll need to link a Microsoft account in order to play Forza Horizon 5 on PlayStation 5. This process begins the first time you start up the game on your console. It adds: On launch of the game, you will be asked to sign-in with your Microsoft account sometimes referred to as the Xbox Live services that are a part of your Microsoft account and link it to the PlayStation Network account you are currently logged into the PlayStation 5 console. It goes on to describe linking a Microsoft account to a PSN account as being on a title-by-title basis and permanent, so if youve already done it in Sea Of Thieves, youll have to do it again in Forza Horizon 5.Players have the ability to unlink the Microsoft account to that PSN account for Forza Horizon 5, but will be constrained to relinking to only that specific and originally linked Microsoft account, it concludes. As with Sea Of Thieves, the reason behind this Microsoft account link is to enable crossplay (although this doesnt include cross-saves across platforms). This is the same with some PlayStation games on PC, although Sony has since removed the requirement across several of its titles, including Helldivers 2 and God of War Ragnark, following backlash. While the act of making a Microsoft account is relatively hassle free, the fact youre required to have one to play the game (whether online or offline) has raised some concerns around game preservation.According to X account Does It Play?, which tracks the long-term functionality of games, this requirement basically kills preservation for the PlayStation 5 version of Forza Horizon 5, presumably because it might no longer be accessible if this account linking feature is switched off in the future.More TrendingTheres a chance Microsoft could address this down the line to make it future proof, but its still another hanging concern when youre dishing out 54.99 at least for a game thats four years old at this point. Its particularly unfortunate for Forza Horizon as, like most driving games with licensed cars and music, its likely to be withdrawn from sale once those licences expire in the near future as happened with 2018s Forza Horizon 4 last year.If Forza Horizon 5 has a similar six year run then it could disappear from online stores as early as 2027. If youve already bought a copy by then youll still be able to use it, but no one will be able to buy it new which means it will essentially cease to exist for anyone that doesnt already own it on PlayStation 5, since theres no physical edition. It remains to be seen if the account requirement will apply to Microsofts other games which are set to come out on PlayStation 5 in the coming months, including Indiana Jones And The Great Circle and Doom: The Dark Ages. Forza Horizon 5 is set to launch on the console on April 29. Will The Dark Ages require a Microsoft account? • Webb Telescope Spots Two Protostars Locked in a Violent, Million-Year Battle
    gizmodo.com
By Passant Rabie Published March 10, 2025 | Comments (1) | Protostar Lynds 483 as captured by the Webb Space Telescopes NIRCam. NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI The universe can be a beautiful but violent place. A new image from the Webb space telescope captures an epic battle between two stars as they launch jets of material toward one another, creating a vigorous scene of colliding gas and dust that will last for roughly one million more years. Using Webbs near-infrared camera (NIRCam), scientists imaged two actively forming stars that make up Lynds 483 (L483), capturing the massive outburst of material from the stellar pair in high resolution. The two stars have been launching column-like jets at each other for tens of thousands of years, and the shimmering ejections shine in beautiful orange, blue, and purple colors. The north and east compass arrows show the orientation of the image on the sky, and the scale bar is labeled in light years. Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI L483 is located 650 light-years away in the constellation Serpens. The image is bursting with incredible detail, revealing how the material interacts with itself, slowing down or speeding up, and forming different shapes that stretch out across the cosmos. The two protostars can be seen at the center of the hourglass shape, theyre both still in their formation phase. It will take them millions of years to finish forming and end up around the same mass as our Sun, according to a Webb statement. By that time, the outbursts will have subsided, likely leaving behind a tiny disk of gas and dust from which planets may form. For now, the two stars are exchanging fast, tight jets of material. As newer ejections collide with older ones, the material will crumple and twirl based on the density of the outbursts. The exchange of material has also resulted in chemical reactions that have produced a range of molecules, like carbon monoxide, methanol, and several other organic compounds, according to the statement. Some of the jets end up twisted or warped, as seen with the orange arc in the top right edge of the image. This is the result of the ejected material being slowed down by existing, denser material, creating a shock front. Theres a lot going on in the image, creating a beautiful medley of colors and light. If you were viewing this from space, however, it wouldnt exactly look like that. The colors of the image are the result of using different filters to sample specific wavelength ranges, and then assigning different hues to each monochromatic image associated with a different filter.Since launching in December 2021, Webb has wowed us with stunning photos of the universe. Most recently, the space telescope captured an edge-on protoplanetary disk with extreme precision.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Passant Rabie Published March 8, 2025 By Passant Rabie Published March 7, 2025 By Passant Rabie Updated March 6, 2025 By Passant Rabie Published March 6, 2025 By Passant Rabie Published March 5, 2025 By Passant Rabie Published March 4, 2025

Sasaki Reimagines Omans Second-Largest City with a New Waterfront MasterplanSave this picture!Overall Framework Render. Image Courtesy of SasakiSalalah is Oman's largest logistics port and its second-largest city. Located within a two-hour flight from Dubai and a 90-minute flight from Muscat, the city attracted over one million tourists in 2024. As part of the Oman Vision 2040 investment plan, Oman's Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning has commissioned Sasaki to develop a master plan for redesigning the city's waterfront. The plan includes renovating the city's coastal public spaces and constructing new housing and infrastructure to accommodate projected growth. The project is part of a broader initiative to double tourism's contribution to the nation's GDP by 2030, with on-site construction set to begin later this year, in 2025.Save this picture! The New City Salalah waterfront development designed by Sasaki comprises 12,000 residential units for 60,000 residents across four neighborhoods, 3.5 million square meters of parks, 200,000 square meters of retail and hospitality space, two new hospitals, and integrated multimodal transport links. Covering 7.3 square kilometers, the plan envisions a walkable urban environment, emphasizing 10-minute neighborhoods. It prioritizes mixed-use development and soft mobility, incorporating open spaces, cultural venues, and amenities. The design also features a pedestrianized marina and a new 6-kilometer-long public beach, aimed at attracting travelers.Save this picture! The masterplan seeks to enhance Salalah's appeal as a year-round sea-and-sun destination at the crossroads of Asia, Europe, and Africa. Romil Sheth from Sasaki highlighted the region's valued natural features, including lush wadis, local agriculture integrated into the city, and an extensive coastline, as key elements complementing the plan's urban design, placemaking, and planning strategies. From a climate resilience perspective, the New City Salalah masterplan includes measures to address rising sea levels and flooding, particularly given the region's khareef monsoon season. These measures include the introduction of a wetland park, revetments, and natural infrastructure strategies to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events. Related Article Architecture Now: 3XN, Foster + Partners, and More Redefine Redevelopment and Community Design The waterfront development is an integral part of the Greater Salalah Structural Plan, a framework designed to enhance livability by addressing spatial, infrastructure, and mobility challenges while expanding capacity to accommodate the growing Wilayat Salalah, which is projected to reach a population of 674,000 by 2040. The phased development is scheduled to begin later this year, with 5,827 residential units set for delivery in Phase 1.Save this picture! This initiative joins other urban planning projects announced earlier this year. In Europe, Zaha Hadid Architects was recently awarded a large-scale urban regeneration project in Naples, while Foster + Partners unveiled plans for the reclamation of a former industrial site in Constana. In North America, RIOS and Field Operations are advancing a project to transform parking lots into a new neighborhood in Chicago, while in Asia, Uzbekistan is preparing to expand its capital city with a master plan designed by Cross Works. Plans range from industrial land reclamation to densification of under-occupied areas, bringing cities up to speed with the climate resilience and social needs of their societies. • Google Gemini Is Coming to Android Auto but the Rollout Is Troubling
    www.technewsworld.com
Im old, which means I get to see the same mistakes made by the same companies over and over again.Id hoped that AI would fix this, but that clearly isnt the case at the moment because Google has once again previewed a product before it was ready and is getting some bad initial reviews.Remember Google Glass? That product was released before it was ready, and due to the bad press it received, head-mounted displays were delayed for around a decade.Well, Google has started previewing Gemini for Android Auto before it is ready, and users arent becoming fans. This week, lets talk about why Gemini for your car could be a good thing if Google doesnt kill it prematurely.Well close with my Product of the Week: a really cool, smart, vehicle-mounted drone system that will be available across all BYD models.Premature Product Launches and Marketing FailuresOne of the advantages of having a strong marketing organization is that it can manage bad initial impressions and help prevent an unfinished product from ruining its future potential.Steve Jobs was a master at this. While he was alive, Apple out-marketed almost every other company on the planet. The result was that Apple was able to bring to market an iPhone that initially sucked but survived until it didnt. Then, it transformed the market.Google isnt a marketing company. We saw this in spades with Google Glass, another product released before it was ready, which then died a painful death. Its hard to overcome bad first impressions; products introduced before they are ready generally leave bad first impressions. We can see this with the initial coverage for Gemini in Android Auto. While I dont think the product is cooked yet, I also dont think it is as bad as the reviewers seem to think it is, and I believe it will get a ton better.AIs Role in Modern VehiclesI recall back in the 1970s when car makers decided buyers wanted a voice rather than an idiot light to tell them what was going on. Youd get verbal scripted messages like your door is ajar or fasten your seatbelts. That got really annoying after a short time and killed this feature. The idea of talking to your car wasnt bad, but having it verbally alert you to what a light indicator would have done faster, better, and cheaper didnt seem like a step in the right direction. However, AI in your car could be far more interesting because you can converse with AIs. Rather than the pain of voice commands that came after scripted voice alerts (with voice commands, you have to learn specific commands), AIs like Gemini use natural language and can converse with you. AI can do many things, like identifying a place along your route with food youd enjoy, alerting you that you are getting sleepy, and automatically taking you to a safe, affordable hotel. It could provide deeper analytics than idiot lights do.For instance, the meaning of a check engine light can indicate anything from a minor issue to a critical failure, depending on the affected system. So rather than a general alert, the AI could point to the component that had failed, tell you the criticality of the failure, and then get you the appropriate help, whether thats a tow truck or factory support. The criticality of the failure would be a huge benefit. If interference engines have a problem with the timing chain, they can self-destruct if the engine isnt turned off immediately, and a coolant leak can result in a blown head gasket and the need for a new engine. Having AI prevent any of that would be well worth the cost of admission.AI as a Co-Pilot for DriversI used to drive long distances solo a lot when I was younger. Staying awake on a long drive, particularly at night when there is little or no traffic, is problematic. Having someone to talk to helps, but a passenger can fall asleep, too, which isnt always ideal on a long drive.Gemini is a conversational AI, which means you should be able to talk to it and have it hold a conversation with you. Exploring new ideas, chatting about things around you that you might otherwise miss, or just discussing a subject that interests you could make the drive go by faster and make it less likely youll wake up in a hospital or worse. Moreover, this conversational feature could be particularly useful for long-haul truck drivers.Wrapping Up: Will Gemini in Android Auto Succeed?Assuming it was well-trained, generative AI in a vehicle would be a great addition. It should provide more complete answers to questions, more effectively guide you to gas, food, or safety, tell you not only what is wrong with your car but what you should do to limit the damage, and keep you entertained on long trips where you are very likely to fall asleep. But the AI has to be properly trained, performant, and not annoying. Right now, Gemini in Android Auto is none of those things. Thus, it shouldnt be seen in the light of day because it is creating negative impressions that could eventually kill this effort.I hate to see Android Auto AI go the way of Google Glass, but it doesnt look like Google has yet learned from past mistakes. Lets hope Google corrects its path, as Id really like a working AI to chat with while I drive.BYD DJI Car Drone FeatureThe Chinese are doing some amazing things with their EVs. They have EVs that can become boats should you need to get out of a flood, EVs that can rotate on their axis, and flying cars that look like they are decent cars. They even have a car that jumps over obstacles on the road. Audis new E-Tron GT Performance does this as well, and I have to admit I lust for that car.But what caught my eye, particularly as I think about how AI could be used in driving, was the BYD/DJI (DJI is the biggest Chinese drone company) and their effort to wed a drone with their SUV line.Part of why I find this fascinating and want one is that I was a fan of the old Green Hornet TV show in the 1960s, and Black Beauty, Green Hornets car, had something like this. Audi has something similar, which is an amazing prototype.BYD is bringing it to market, and while I like the Audi concept better, there is an advantage to having something you can actually sell. However, in the Audi video linked above, you can see how a drone, or in the case of the Audi, drones, could be used to guide the way on dark roads, look ahead to see what the nature of a massive traffic jam is, or, in the case of a space alien invasion, realize in time that you need to be driving in the opposite direction fast (I watch too many sci-fi movies).I can picture driving to a picturesque area and then launching the drone to get a unique picture, using it to capture all aspects of an accident, sending it ahead to an area that looks dicey to make sure you can make it through (like if there is a flash flood warning), or looking for help if you are broken down and cant get a cell signal. And of course, pulling into a cars and coffee event and then launching the drone from your roof. It would surely draw attention from the one or two overpriced supercars that always seem to get the most attention. Not that Im into that at allI just think this BYD/DJI effort would be really cool. I only wish we could buy BYD cars here in the U.S. so I could check it out. So, this drone option is my Product of the Week.

  • Into the Unknown: How Similar Is Deep Sea and Space Exploration?
    www.discovermagazine.com
Both the deep sea and space are difficult to reach and even more difficult to explore. You cant breathe the air, temperatures are extreme, gravity varies, and atmospheric pressure makes survival impossible without protective vehicles. Its part of the reason that these remote terrains are largely left unexplored. Only around 5 percent of the universe and 26 percent of the ocean floor have been visited. Both deep sea travel and deep space travel come with a lot of risks and a lot of preparation, but when it comes to the nitty gritty, how similar are these two remote worlds?Requirements for Deep Sea and Space TravelAccording to DavidKlaus, a professor of aerospace engineering science at the University of Colorado Boulder, the fundamentals and preparation of deep sea and space travel are very similar. Both sea and space require bringing along water, food, and oxygen, as well as the removal of contaminants like urine and feces. The biggest difference between space and the deep sea is that in space youre pressurized from the inside out and under water youve got all the pressure on the outside. And in both cases, you have to maintain the atmosphere with the right amount of pressure, temperature, and humidity. The fundamental functions are, for all practical purposes, the same, but the difference is in how you meet those functions, says Klaus.Read More: What Comes After Oceangate?Exploring the Remote Ends of the Earth and BeyondWhen youre underwater, you can always come up to the surface (even though it might take a few minutes) to resupply, and the same is true of low Earth orbit, where you can resupply with more water, food, and other goods being sent up to the Space Station. If a broken part needs to be repaired, that can happen in low Earth orbit but not in deep space. When youre traveling to deep space, for example, to Mars, the time lag adds another layer of danger. It takes a minimum of six months to fly to Mars, depending on where you are in the Earths orbit. The time lag for communication in deep space can be up to 44 minutes roundtrip, which means if something life-threatening is happening, theres nothing a ground crew can do to help, says Klaus. He adds that this drives the need for autonomous decision-making that you wouldnt necessarily have in low Earth orbit or in the deep sea.The Biggest Risks of Deep Sea and Space ExplorationWe know from the Titan submersible that theres a real risk of implosion when it comes to deep sea exploration. The Titan submersible imploded in June 2023 with five passengers on board. The implosion likely occurred during the vehicles initial descent, killing the passengers instantly. Other risks of deep sea exploration include entanglement on the sea floor and fire in the cabin.By far, the biggest risks in space travel are launch and reentry, when the largest amounts of energy are expended. But theres also the risk of space radiation, which happens beyond the protection of the Earths magnetic field.According to NASA, high-energy galactic cosmic rays and solar storms can harm the body or damage spacecraft. Whats more, isolation from Earth can be risky if an astronaut encounters an accident or has a life-threatening health problem while aboard a spacecraft. Over time, gravity can also be harmful to the body, weakening bones and muscles. While both the deep sea and space offer a new frontier of exploration, each poses its own set of challenges and risks. And with all that goes into exploring these remote worlds, its no wonder that theres still so much more to explore both on Earth and in space.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards. • This unusual stone circle may predate Stonehenge
    www.popsci.com
Flagstones enclosure seen shortly after construction in the middle Neolithic period. Reconstruction by Jennie AndersonShareStonehenge gets some well-deserved attention when it comes to British archeology. Between its age, altar stones epic journey, and potential origin as a community building initiative, it has a storied history. However, another site in southwest England called Flagstones might be even older. New radiocarbon dating and human remains, red deer antlers, and charcoal found in the area puts this ancient stone circle near Dorchester at 3,200 BCEroughly 300 years older than Stonehenge. The findings are detailed in a study published March 6 in the journal Antiquity and the team believes that the Flagsontes may have served as a prototype for later monuments.First discovered during highway construction in the county of Dorset during the 1980s, Flagstones was formed of a 328 feet (100 meter) diameter circular ditch of intersecting pits. Archaeologists have found at least four burials in the enclosure pitthree children who had not been cremated and one adult who had been cremated. The remains of three other partially cremated adults were found elsewhere. Initially, its similarities to Stonehenge had archeologists and historians assuming that Flagstones must be of a similar date. Get the Popular Science newsletter Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. By signing up you agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.Flagstones is an unusual monument; a perfectly circular ditched enclosure, with burials and cremations associated with it, Susan Greaney, a study co-author and University of Exeter archeologist, said in a statement. In some respects, it looks like monuments that come earlier, which we call causewayed enclosures, and in others, it looks a bit like things that come later that we call henges. But we didnt know where it sat between these types of monuments and the revised chronology places it in an earlier period than we expected. For this new effort to age the stones, a team from Historic England and the University of Exeter joined forces with ETH Zrich in Switzerland and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. They took 23 new radiocarbon measurements and combined that data with some of the archaeological finds in the area. The early Neolithic activityincluding the digging of pitstook place around 3650 BCE. After several centuries passed, the circular ditched enclosure was created around 3200 BCE. The burials were also placed within that circle immediately afterwards. A later burial of a young adult male under a large sarsen stone at the center enclosure happened roughly 1,000 years after its initial use.A proposed timeline for Flagstones and Stonehenge. CREDIT: Greaney et al. 2025 The chronology of Flagstones is essential for understanding the changing sequence of ceremonial and funeral monuments in Britain, said Greaney. The sister monument to Flagstones is Stonehenge, whose first phase is almost identical, but it dates to around 2900 BC. Could Stonehenge have been a copy of Flagstones? Or do these findings suggest our current dating of Stonehenge might need revision?Additionally, this new look at Flagstones also reveals some connections to other significant sites, including Llandygi Henge A in Gwynedd, Wales, and some locations in Ireland. Similar burial practices and artifacts have been uncovered in both places. According to the team, these findings show how interconnected some Neolithic communities were across Britain and beyond.

I dont know about you, but I feel a few steps behind every time we spring forward. So, after I reset all the clocks and finally got outside to test the Urtopia Carbon Fold 1 e-bike, I needed some musical motivation to help me keep pace. However, I wasnt into earbuds on such a beautiful, busy day on the bike path, so I strapped the TREBLAB HD-Go to the JAMES Mehlville double-compartment carabiner on my belt loop and rolled out. You may not feel the same way I do about Daylight Savings Time, but if youre pro savings like me, youll love the money you can save right now if you buy a TREBLAB party speaker using exclusive Popular Science coupon codes at Amazon. But hurry, these deep discountsup to 43 percent offare only good through the end of March.TREBLAB HD-Go $19.93 w/ coupon code HDGO43OFF (was $34.97)TREBLABSee ItThe newest, smallest TREBLAB speaker, the HD-Go is the size of a hefty bar of soap. At only 3.8 ounces, however, I didnt even notice it hanging by my keys during a 20-mile bike ride. I was only out for a couple of hours, but I never worried about the HD-Go powering down thanks to its 16-hour battery life (Im gonna run out of gas way before that). And while it was a sunny Sunday, there are plenty of cold, rainy days where Ive thrown on a Pearl iZUMi jacket and attacked every ascent, so its good to know the speaker has an IPX7 waterproof rating if I wanted to take it with. As for the sound of this 7W speaker, it was clear and kicking, considering the driver size (you can always pair two if you want a bigger stereo soundstage).
