Bluesky now lets users upload longer videos, improves DMs, more9to5mac.comThe microblogging social network Bluesky was updated today with some new features aimed at improving the experience of using the platform. With the update, users can now upload longer videos but thats not all. Read on as we detail whats new on Bluesky.Whats new in Bluesky: longer videos and moreAs detailed by Bluesky in a post, version 1.99 of the platform brings some welcome and long-awaited changes. One of the most notable is certainly the ability to upload longer videos. More specifically, you can now upload a video of up to three minutes on Bluesky. Previously, the platform limited videos to 60 seconds.Another welcome improvement is related to DMs. Users will now have a separate DM inbox to approve requests from unknown users. This makes it easier to filter messages from people you know. And when you dont want to reply to a DM from an unknown account, you can simply reject the conversation. Bluesky believes that this will help reduce DM spam. The platform has also made it easier to mute accounts from a post and to report posts and accounts to moderation. Moreover, the layout of the platform has been improved for tablets. In December 2024, Bluesky began rolling out its own Trending Topics feature, so that users can see what everyone is talking about. For now, the trending topics are global and do not differ by region, and theyre only available to those using Bluesky in English. The platform promises that support for more languages will be added in the future.Currently, Bluesky has more than 32 million active users. Although Threads (owned by Meta) has more users, Bluesky has been gaining traction in recent months. The Bluesky app is available for free on the App Store, and it requires an iPhone running iOS 15.1 or later. Make sure you have the latest version of the app installed so you can access all the new features.Gadgets I recommendAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. Intel MacBook Air users can finally upgrade without giving up a feature9to5mac.comStill using an Intel MacBook Air? Youre now free to throw it in the recycling bin without feeling guilty.OK, maybe dont go that far, but Intel MacBook Air users can finally upgrade to the Apple silicon version without giving up a useful feature. The M4 MacBook Air hits stores on Wednesday, March 12. Visually, the most striking change is the new sky blue version that replaces space gray, and lets not forget the tweaked mute key icon total game changer.Visually, the MacBook Air has been an upgrade over the Intel version since the current design debuted with the M2 chip.Redesign aside, though, the last three generations of MacBook Air couldnt beat the last Intel MacBook Air from early 2020 in one department. External display support was a notable step back for the MacBook Air when Apple switched from Intel chips to Apple silicon.Thats because both the M1 and M2 MacBook Air are capable of using just one external display. Without wonky workarounds, the first two Apple silicon versions just couldnt drive two external displays simultaneously even if they were both just 1080p resolution. My switch from Intel to Apple silicon in late 2020 started with the original M1 MacBook Air that replaced my 16-inch Intel MacBook Pro. I went from Apples hottest-running and nosiest Mac notebook ever to the fan-less MacBook Air and never looked back.I could also never look at the second 21.5-inch 4K monitor on my desk when using an Apple silicon MacBook Air. The improvements to performance and battery life were worth the trade-off when it was necessary, but it was still a setback compared to the most basic Intel MacBook Air.That started to change with the previous generation MacBook Air. Apple enabled the ability to connect the M3 MacBook Air to two displays for simultaneous use, but only with the MacBook Air lid closed.Since then, the MacBook Pro has gotten more attractive. All M-series MacBook Pro models have always been able to drive dual monitors, but theyre neither MacBook Air priced nor MacBook Air sized.Which brings us to the best tidbit about the M4 MacBook Air. It will work with two external displays while using the built-in display at the same time. No more compromise! Unless youre shopping for one of those earlier generation M-series MacBook Air models. Eventually theyll be off the market and all MacBook Air models being sold as new will be as capable as the Intel MacBook Air!The M4 MacBook Air is available for pre-order now and hits stores on Wednesday.Best Apple accessoriesFollow Zac Hall on X, and listen to Runtime with co-host Sophia Tung on Apple Podcasts and YouTube.Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. Xiaomi 15 Ultra: My Review After 2 Weeks of Testing It Around Europewww.cnet.comThe Xiaomi 14 Ultra was one of thebest phonesof 2024, thanks in no small part to an awesome camera system that took some of the best photos I've ever seen from a camera phone. At the heart of this was its 1-inch type image sensor, which is physically larger than the sensors found in almost any other phone. The result? Great-looking images in a variety of conditions. But it's 2025 now and the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is here to try and tempt more photographers away from Apple's clutches. The phone has had a variety of updates, including the powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite processorand a host of new AI skills -- because apparently all phones need to have AI built in whether you like it or not. And while the camera hasn't seen many updates, there are a few tweaks to keep photographers interested.Read more: MWC 2025: All the Phones, Wearables, Robots and AI Live From Barcelona MWC 2025: Xiaomi's Photography-Focused 15 Ultra Is a Powerhouse See all photos The Xiaomi 15 Ultra global version was announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It goes on sale in the UK and wider Europe later this month for 1,299 with 512GB of storage or 1,499 if you want 1TB. As with other Xiaomi phones, the 15 Ultra will not be available to buy in the US but for reference that base UK price converts to $1,630 or AU$2,630.Here are the most important things to know about the Xiaomi 15 Ultra.Xiaomi 15 Ultra camera The Xiaomi 15 Ultra comes with four generations of OS updates along with six years of security support. Andrew Lanxon/CNETI was bowled over by the massive image sensor inside the 14 Ultra's main camera, so I suppose I should be pleased that the 15 Ultra has kept it. But I am a bit disappointed that it's literally the same model -- the Sony LYT-900. Sure, it's a great sensor and not that old, but I had hoped to see Xiaomi take its winning formula from last year and make it even better.Maybe the lens is better? On paper, I'd actually argue there's been a downgrade. The 14 Ultra had a rare variable aperture, which went from wide open at f/1.6 and could close down to f/4. It allowed for attractive star-burst effects when shooting points of light in the dark. The 15 Ultra has gotten rid of this and instead has a fixed f/1.6 aperture -- Xiaomi says it can achieve the same effects "through software optimization and algorithm updates." Sigh. MWC 2025: I Took Hundreds of Photos With the Xiaomi 15 Ultra. These Are My Faves See all photos Read more: Best Android Phone of 2025While you can adjust the depth of field strength (the amount of background blur behind your subject) in the portrait mode, I've found a couple of things wrong. First, the image with the blur doesn't save when you take it, so it looks the same no matter what fake aperture you set it as. This is probably just early software problems and I'm sure they'll be fixed. But the lack of real adjustable aperture also means you don't get the nice star bursts on street lights at night anymore. Those starbursts are probably a niche thing to be excited about, but they truly transformed the look of night photos and the effect was one of my favorite things about shooting with the 14 Ultra. To see this kind of innovation chucked out in favor of a software-based "solution" is frustrating. It's also exactly what I complained so much about last year, with AI being the only area where companies are innovating now. Ironically, in that article, I applauded Xiaomi for the 14 Ultra, but I won't be able to with this new model. Here's the Xiaomi 15 Ultra's camera app. Andrew Lanxon/CNETIt's also odd to see that the ultrawide camera's aperture has been dropped from f/1.8 to f/2.2. The only actual upgrade to the cameras I can see is that the telephoto zoom resolution is higher for better-looking zoomed-in shots.Photos taken with the Xiaomi 15 UltraIt's still a powerful camera setup though and I've taken some shots in my testing that I like. As with the 14 Ultra, the camera is certified by Leica, and there are some Leica-approved color styles to choose from, my favorite of which remains the high contrast black and white mode. It's great for punchy monochrome street photography. You can see a selection of my test images here, but also check out my longer gallery of examples if you're keen to see more of this camera in action. Enlarge Image Vibrant colors and great exposure and detail from this outdoor shot taken on the main camera. Andrew Lanxon/CNET Enlarge Image I loved using the Leica high contrast black and white mode for punchy street photography in Edinburgh. Andrew Lanxon/CNET Enlarge Image Taken in raw and edited in Lightroom, the camera's ability to capture beautiful light and shadow has resulted in a great-looking pic of my stunning ball of delightful furry wonder. Andrew Lanxon/CNET Enlarge Image This night time shot from the main camera looks awesome, though I'd like it even more with a subtle star burst on the street light. Andrew Lanxon/CNET Enlarge Image Using the telephoto zoom lens, I've been able to fill the frame with the awkwardness of this street performer forcing two strangers to hold hands for an extended period. Andrew Lanxon/CNET Enlarge Image And here the telephoto zoom has captured a nice natural bokeh around this couple. Andrew Lanxon/CNETXiaomi's Photography Kit is optional for the 15 UltraYes, you can buy the 15 Ultra with the same Photography Kit that was offered with last year's model. It includes a case, a powered grip with shutter button and an attachable ring that allows you to use regular 67mm photography filters. The grip is awesome. It clicks in neatly, adds some extra battery life to the phone and the shutter button and settings wheel allow you to shoot just like you were using a compact camera. It's much more comfortable than taking photos without it.It's been updated too, with a new thumb grip attachment to make it a bit easier to hold. There's also a soft-touch, screw-in shutter release button, which is bigger and easier to quickly find and hit than the original button it screws into. If you're keen on using your phone for street or travel photography, the Photography Kit is worth getting. Look at the Xiaomi 15 Ultra wearing its optional Photographer's Kit. Andrew Lanxon/CNETThe Snapdragon 8 Elite chip is a powerhouseThe Snapdragon 8 Elite chip found inside the Xiaomi 15 Ultra has already impressed us on phones like the OnePlus 13 and its power is noticeable here, too. It put in notable scores on our benchmark tests, while everyday operation is fast and lag-free.It's great for gamers, too, with demanding titles like Genshin Impact playing smoothly at max settings and at 60 frames per second. Qualcomm's 8 Elite chip isn't just designed for raw power though, it's built for better AI processing. Which brings me neatly on toNew AI skills with Gemini on the Xiaomi 15 UltraGoogle Gemini and Gemini advanced are built in as standard, including the conversational Gemini Live and Circle to Search. But Xiaomi has thrown in a few of its own features, too. There's a generative text tool to create blocks of text based on your prompts, along with a helpful tool that creates text transcriptions from voice recordings -- great for a busy tech journalist. There's also a variety of image-focused AI tools for expanding an image using generative AI, removing things in a scene or simply sharpening the picture. The AI tools all work as well as I'd hope, but it's worth keeping in mind that all of them require an internet connection in order to use -- including the voice transcript tool, for some reason. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra runs on Android 15. Andrew Lanxon/CNETAn acceptable software support periodThe 15 Ultra launches with Android 15 on board, and Xiaomi promises it'll receive four generations of Android updates along with six years of security support. It's less than what both Samsung and Google provide for their flagships (seven years of both software and security support) and I'd certainly have liked to see Xiaomi match, or even beat its rivals here, especially considering the high price of the phone.Still, a shelf life of six years is decent enough (a third of people keep their phones for three years or longer) and matches what OnePlus offers for its recent OnePlus 13 flagship. The rest of the phone is solid tooBattery life is good, but not outstanding. On our demanding video streaming test it held out better than the OnePlus 13 but didn't do quite as well as the Galaxy S25 Ultra. You can safely expect a day of use but as with all phones you'll probably want to give it a full charge overnight. The 6.7-inch display is bright, vibrant and pin sharp. Videos look great, as do colorful mobile games. The phone is IP68 rated to help keep it safe from spilled drinks, too. All in all, it's a phone that ticks pretty much every box you'd expect from one of today's flagships. I just wish I'd seen more innovation in the cameras for this year's model. Still, there's no question that it still takes superb images that rival any of today's flagships. If you're looking for a high-performance Android phone to use as your main camera on your travels, it's certainly worth considering.Xiaomi 15 Ultra specs vs. Xiaomi 14 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, OnePlus 13 Xiaomi 15 UltraXiaomi 14 UltraSamsung Galaxy S25 UltraOnePlus 13Display size, tech, resolution, refresh rate 6.73-inch AMOLED; 3,200x1,440 pixels; 1 - 120Hz adaptive refresh rate 6.73-inch AMOLED; 3,200x1,440 pixels, 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate6.8-inch AMOLED; 3,120x1,440 pixels; 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate6.82-inch AMOLED; 3,168x1,440 pixels; 1-120Hz adaptive refresh ratePixel density 522ppi522 ppi501 ppi510ppiDimensions (inches) Black and white: 6.35 x 2.96 x 0.37 in.; Silver chrome: 16.35 x 2.96 x 0.37 in.6.35 x 2.96 x 0.36 in6.41 x 3.06 x 0.32 in.6.41x3.01x0.33 in. TCL's 60 Phone Series Expands With Better Cameras, Bigger Batterieswww.cnet.comThe TCL 60 series of phones is expanding, the company revealed Monday at Mobile World Congress 2025. TCL highlighted its plans internationally forlower-cost phone models that have a 108-megapixel main camera, more NxtPaper displays that mimic e-readers and big 5,200-mAh batteries with 18-watt wired charging. The TCL 60 series first debuted in January at CES 2025 with the $200 TCL 60 XE NxtPaper 5G that will head to the US market later this year. The TCL 60 XE will be joined by several variations of both TCL's NxtPaper devices and phones with traditional displays that are set for release in Asia, Europe and Latin American markets.Read more: MWC 2025: All the Phones, Wearables, Robots and AI Live From Barcelona The TCL 60 SE NxtPaper 5G. TCLTCL 60 series display and batteryThe TCL 60 SE NxtPaper 5G has a 6.7-inch display, 5,200-mAh battery, support for AI tools like a writing assistant, an IP54 rating for splash and dust resistance and 18GB of memory paired up with 256GB of storage. That phone will cost 189 euros, which roughly converts to $195.The TCL 60 NxtPaper -- without any additional letters in its name -- has a larger 6.8-inch display, a 108-megapixel main camera (which we rarely see in these price ranges) and up to 512GB of internal storage. Like the SE phone, it will also include 18GB of memory and a 5,200-mAh battery. That phone will cost 199 euros. TCL's NxtPaper phones change to an eReader-like mode by tapping a button. Tara Brown/CNETTCL 60 series priceTCL's non-NxtPaper devices range in price from 109 euros to 169 euros. On the low end of this price range is the TCL 605 which has 128GB of storage, a 50-megapixel main camera and a 5,200-mAh battery. While on the higher-end are the TCL 60 5G and TCL 60 SE. The 60 SE has a 6.67-inch display, a 50-megapixel main camera, 8GB of memory and 512GB of storage. The 60 5G -- without any additional letters -- gets a 6.8-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor and has 6GB of memory along with 256GB of storage. The entire TCL 60 series unveiled at MWC 2025. TCLWill the TCL 60 series come to the US?While most of these phones aren't coming to the US, this lineup does give a few hints about what could be coming to phones that cost $200 and less from TCL and other phone companies. For the last few years, phone batteries in these lower-cost phones have kept to 5,000 mAh -- which as it is often last a full day -- but companies like OnePlus are starting to push those capacities even higher in more expensive phones. Its promising to see that lower-cost devices can start bumping up the battery capacity.Read more: 5 MWC 2025 Products You Can Actually Buy Right Now0 Comments ·0 Shares ·58 Views

The best VPN trials of 2025: Expert tested and reviewedwww.zdnet.comProtecting your privacy online is important, and learning how to use avirtual private network (VPN) is an excellent way to start the process. VPNs mask your online activities by issuing you an IP from another location, encrypting data, and sending your requests through their server networks. They make it harder for third parties to track you, making you less likely to become a victim of eavesdropping or for your personal information to be exploited by marketers. They also help stop internet service providers (ISPs) from throttling your connection and can be used to access streaming services worldwide. There are so many VPNs out there -- some more trustworthy than others -- that deciding on the right VPN for you is a daunting task. The easiest way to see if a particular VPN is the right one for you is to sign up for a free trial, which most companies offer. In most cases, we recommend you choose a trial over a free VPN service, as many free offerings require you to agree to data collection and targeted advertising. In addition, most VPN providers will ask for your payment card details when you sign up for the free trial. Take note of the money-back guarantee period and cancel before you are charged. What is the best VPN trial right now?Our top pick is Proton VPN as it is one of the few VPN providers that still provides a free option without a time limit and doesn't ask for your financial details. Although restricted, the VPN is user-friendly and has an attractive user interface, giving you all the time you need to figure out how VPNs work and whether this one suits your needs. Paid plans are also available.Below are ZDNET's top picks for the best VPN trials on the market right now. Sort by All The best VPN trials of 2025 Show less View now at Proton Since launching in 2017, Proton VPN -- the open-source virtual private network from the minds of Proton Mail -- has made its mark. Alternatively, you can sign up for a subscription and cancel within 30 days.At ZDNET, we view Proton VPN's free offering as a "trial," especially if you are new to the world of VPNs and want to learn how to use the software before signing up for a paid plan. A bonus is that the VPN provider is backed by Swiss privacy laws, some of the strongest in the world. The caveat is that you can only connect one device to one of three countries with the trial. On the flip side, there are no data limits. If you opt for a paid subscription, you can access over 4,600 servers in 91 countries. Also: Best travel VPN of 2025If you're interested in a paid plan, you can pay $4.49 per month on a two-year contract or $5 per month on an annual plan. Show more Factors to consider when choosing a VPN trial When considering trying out a new VPN, there are numerous factors and conditions to think about, the most important of which are outlined below:Trial length: VPN trials vary in length. For example, you may have 30 days on your Windows PC, whereas iOS or Android-based trials may only last seven days. The latter can be useful but may not be enough time to test a VPN before purchasing.Limits: VPN trials are often limited, which may impact the devices you can use your VPN on, the number of devices, speed, or server access. Furthermore, there may be speed caps imposed on free VPN plans or during trial periods, which don't reflect the true capabilities of the VPN service.Payment details: Some VPNs require payment card details before you can test out their service. If this is the case, remember to remove your details before your time runs out, to avoid being automatically charged for a paid subscription.Paid plans: If you find a VPN that you like, you may then decide to sign up for a paid plan. Consider the monthly cost of your new plan ahead of time and decide whether it is within your preferred price range.Security: Avoid VPNs without extensive customer feedback and with shady business practices. It's not worth potentially trading your data and privacy to save a few bucks. Show more How did we choose these VPN trials? When looking for the best VPN trials of 2025, we wanted to see just how user-friendly they are, whether you'll be asked to hand over payment card details, and whether the trials themselves have value. We considered the following factors.Hands-on research: We conduct extensive hands-on research, including speed tests and domain name service (DNS) leak tests, on many VPN offerings. If a VPN doesn't perform as it should, they don't make the cut.Usability: We kept usability and user-friendliness across the different VPN trials. The point of a trial is to learn how VPNs work and to ensure a VPN is the right product for you.Limitations: Some VPN trials are limited; for example, maybe you can only connect to a handful of servers. We prefer it when trials are for the full VPN service, but there are some exceptions.Customer reviews: We examined customer reviews, including both positive and negative experiences. We also kept in mind the longevity of VPN providers, considering their track records for user and data privacy, popularity, as well as the variety and accessibility of services.Money-back guarantee: You often have to rely on a 30-day money-back guarantee to test the most popular VPNs. Except for services like Proton VPN and Windscribe, a subscription model is still preferable to free VPNs, unless they use the revenue generated from paid plans to support free options. Show more Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is a VPN? A virtual private network (VPN) is a network of nodes -- or servers -- that reroute internet traffic to mask its original IP address. VPNs also add a layer of encryption to protect data packets and online communication. As the internet was not designed to be inherently secure, VPNs were developed to bridge part of the security gap. While they are not a foolproof solution, a reliable and trustworthy VPN can help protect your online privacy. If you want to understand how VPNs work in more detail, check out our guide oneverything you need to knowabout VPNs. Show more What is a VPN trial, and how does it work? A VPN trial is a way to test a VPN service before purchasing it.Typically, these trials last for a specific period or have limited functionality. Once the trial period ends, you must subscribe to continue using the service. VPN trials work by providing you with a temporary account, allowing you to test the VPN's features and functionality. Some VPN providers offer free trials. You can cancel your subscription within the trial period to avoid being charged, but you will likely have to provide your payment card details when signing up. VPN trials can range from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the provider. During the trial period, you may have limited access to certain features, reduced connection speeds, or a limited number of servers to choose from. Most VPN providers, however, offer a full range of features during the trial period. Not all VPN trials are secure and trustworthy, so it's essential to choose a reputable VPN provider that has a history of protecting user privacy and security. Show more When should a VPN not be used? Using a VPN is generally recommended day-to-day. In some circumstances, you may decide not to enable your VPN.VPNs can slow down your connection, so if you're not dealing with sensitive information, you may want to trade speed for security temporarily, such as when gaming. You should also always check if using a VPN is legal in your country. Show more What does a VPN not protect you from? VPNs protect your privacy by masking your IP address and encrypting your traffic. Unless there are specific, integrated features, they do not offer protection against online threats such as phishing, drive-by malicious downloads, malware, ransomware, or data breaches. To protect yourself against these attack vectors, you should ensure you have a firewall and antivirus software. Stay suspicious of untrusted messages and emails. Show more Are there alternative VPNs worth considering? There is a huge selection of VPN offerings in the market today. Elon Musk Claims Twitter (Now Called X) Was Down Due To A Cyberattackwww.forbes.comWASHINGTON, DC - NOVEMBER 13: Elon Musk listens as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump addresses a ... [+] House Republicans Conference meeting at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill on November 13, 2024 in Washington, DC. As is tradition with incoming presidents, Trump is traveling to Washington, DC to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House as well as meet with Republican congressmen on Capitol Hill. (Photo by Andrew Harnik/Getty Images)Getty ImagesElon Musk is on the defensive after Twitter (now known as X) was down for several hours today. He claimed in one report that the outage was due to a coordinated cyber attack that originated in Ukraine. There was a massive cyberattack to try and bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area, he told Fox News. The outage was random and intermittent, lasting for 45 minutes at a time, then resuming only to go dark again for another 45 minutes. Another extended outage lasted several hours. While Musk did not provide evidence of the attack, its not a surprise that he would suspect Ukraine now that he is so firmly aligned with President Trump. Given his close association with Trump and the recent argument in the White House over Ukraine aid, its not out of the realm of possibility that the social media platform would become a target.Tracing why Twitter (X) was downIn most cases, its usually possible to at least determine the origin of a cyberattack using digital forensics techniques. For example, if there was a code injection on a server or a coordinated denial-of-service attack, security experts should be able to find some clues.Musk himself announced on the X platform that they were tracing the incident, which likely means X officials were trying to find out where the attacks originated and how they were made.It can take several days or even weeks to determine the true cause of a cyberattack or if that was even the real reason that the Twitter service was down for so long.Political clashesThis wasnt the only trending story related to Musk today.Musk seems to be clashing with political figures and world leaders on a routine basis. In posts that were also related to Ukraine, Musk claimed his Starlink service is the backbone of the Ukrainian army. Musk also called Senator Mark Kelly a traitor for visiting the country.Twitter, now called X, has become an unfiltered public square for discourse like this, and there are pros and cons to having such an open debate. It means anyone can chime in with an opinion, even if they dont offer any support or evidence. In recent months, social media platforms have removed some gatekeeping and monitoring as a way to give users more freedom to post what they want.In this case, the fact that Musk was claiming a specific country was responsible for a cyberattack without releasing any evidence is proof that social media has taken on a new freeform approach. We may never know why Twitter was down.0 Comments ·0 Shares ·51 Views

It ultimately traces back to the Proto-Germanic root _trak-/trekk-, meaning "to pull, drag, or draw." This is also related to the word "trek."Originally, "track" referred to marks left by something dragged or by footsteps, and over time it came to mean a path, a trail, a railway line, or a course of action.Let me know how you fared with your Wordle today on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook.
