Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games hereHelldivers 2 will receive more new weapons in the future as part of Warbonds. Leaks for Warbonds have possibly revealed a huge melee weapon as part of the next crossover, meanwhile, there are old Warbond leaks still yet to come to fruition. While leaks have dried up, a player has experienced a bug that created a devastating monstrosity Arrowhead should add to Helldivers 2 as a new weapon.Helldivers 2 bug creates monster new weaponOn the Helldivers subreddit, OP Hakatuuu has shared screenshots of a bug. This bug created a monstrosity of the DCS and the Grenade Launcher. It looks absolutely diabolical, and, of course, theres an urge to see Arrowhead make it a reality rather than a one-off bug.Reacting to the bug, theres a lot of responses echoing the sentiment that it looks super cool, and that the community would love Arrowhead to add a sniper grenade launcher to the battle for democracy. The most upvoted comment says that it would be neat if Arrowhead decide to add a Helldivers style OICW. The OICW is a weapon that has never made it past the prototype phase, but, for a futuristic video game, it should be able to become reality. There is a lot from this bug that fans would love to see Arrowhead implement. Ideas include a Stationary Belt-Fed GL Stratagem, as well as a Grenade launcher with underbarrel marksman rifle.Unfortunately, we dont know of any new guns set to be added to Helldivers 2 anytime soon. However, new leaks have revealed weapon modifications for the Liberator, and some of these modifications actually appear in the games opening cutscene. For more Helldivers 2, check out our guide to thebest warbonds ranked, along with thebest stratagemsandbest throwables. Given that those sales centres are said to have gobbled up an estimated $43 million from the iZEV pot, it may be understandable to some why the iZEV program was halted just 72 hours after the initial announcement that money would soon run out.Advertisement 3Story continues belowThis advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.Article contentArticle contentRecommended from EditorialIf selling approximately 8,600 cars across four stores sounds like an impossible number, well, youre exactly right. Everyone expected EV sales to spike once the government told Canadians the iZEV program was in imminent danger of running low on cashbut the numbers posted by these Tesla locations beggars belief. An analysis of data shows one spot claimed 2,558 sales in a single day, despite a quick survey of its physical location showing its not able to park even one-tenth that number of vehicles.Advertisement 4Story continues belowThis advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.Article contentNever mind the logistics behind delivering that many vehicles in one working day. If each customer was allotted just 20 minutes per delivery, that works out to over 850 employee hours; theyd have required over 70 people simultaneously working 12 hours straight without any breaks, just delivering cars. That being said, the iZEV data shows deliveries on January 11 tied to a Quebec-based Tesla store associated with the G1N 2G3 postal code in many other provinces, including Alberta, British Columbiaheck, nearly every other province. Parking inside of a Tesla dealership in Laval, Quebec Photo by Nadine FilionSo what actually happened? Unsurprisingly, the corporate behemoth that is Tesla wouldnt respond to The Star for any comment on this situation, nor apparently could anyone be reached at the stores. Speaking as a person who once toiled in the dealership environment, this author will say it is not unheard of for the business office to backdate an occasional deal in order to make some sort of quota or qualify for a volume bonus. One or two machines recorded for yesterday instead of today isnt generally the end of the world. But the level of alleged chicanery on display at these Tesla stores seems egregious, particularly since it involves massive amounts of money from the public purse. The Canadian Automobile Dealers Association in particular is not happy about it, and is asking Transport Canada to conduct a full investigation into whether the EV rebates were claimed properly.Sign up for our newsletter Blind-Spot Monitor and follow our social channels on X, Tiktok and LinkedIn to stay up to date on the latest automotive news, reviews, car culture, and vehicle shopping advice.More in Industry News See more Share this article in your social networkMatthew GuyMatthew Guy is a lifelong gearhead who writes automotive content for Canadian and American outlets. One of Those DaysHopetown, one scrapper in the sort of Disco Elysium successor fight, reveals another ex-Disco collaborator and gets a pretty Disco Elysiumy first teaser starring DE's narratorThe Kickstarter campaign for Longdue's game launches on March 17.Image credit: Longdue News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on March 11, 2025 Yep, it's one of those days again. At the same time that Disco Elysium studio ZA/UM has announced its own not Disco Elysium 2, one of the many would-be Disco spiritual successors in the works has revealed its first teaser, along with news of having brought on board another ex-Disco dev.Longdue, the studio behind this particular kinda Discoey thing, is part of the messy sort of successor trio alongside Dark Math Games and Summer Eternal, and is about to commence a Kickstarter campaign for the psychological RPG it revealed in January. That Kickstarter will begin on March 17.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. As you might remember, Hopetown, is the DE kinda successor where you play as a journalist in a mining town and has a "psychogeography system" that makes "emotions, memories, and conversations replace traditional mechanics like keys and levers, becoming the tools that unlock doors, alter landscapes, and reshape relationships".The fresh teaser for it doesn't tell us much more, but it does see original Disco Elysium narrator Lenval Brown say some words as a camera pans down an artistically rendered hallway full of people arguing, before settling on Hopetown's protagonist. Longdue has brought Brown on board to voice "a key character" in the game, as well as being "closely involved in the project".Watch on YouTube"It feels good to be backto step into something new," Brown said, "Theres nothing like bringing a world to life, shaping a story thats been waiting to be spoken into existence."It's also brought in another ex-Disco dev to work alongside the folks like narrative director Grant Roberts and technical lead Piotr Sobolewski seen in the latter part of the teaser, with Martin Luiga, an editor on the original Disco, having joined the Hopetown team."I am pleased to share my experiences with Longdue to help them craft the narrative and systems for Hopetown, playing to the strengths that the narrative RPG genre has achieved thus far and attempting to innovate upon them to tell a rich story based in equal parts on what has been, what is and what could be," Luiga said, "I am confident that the team can deliver a worthy addition to the canon of Western RPGs."Are you keen to see how Hopetown turns out, assuming it can hit its crowdfunding goals and comes to fruition? • This is not Disco Elysium 2, this is C4 ZA/UM announces its next game, a spy RPG about doing the work you love, even if it doesnt get you any fame or parades
    www.vg247.com
WordsThis is not Disco Elysium 2, this is C4 ZA/UM announces its next game, a spy RPG about doing the work you love, even if it doesnt get you any fame or parades"We want to build on what we've done before, but not simply by repeating it, or rehashing it."Image credit: ZA/UM/VG247 News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on March 11, 2025 Disco Elysium studio ZA/UM has officially thrown its hat into the kinda DE successor maelstrom, announcing an upcoming spy RPG codenamed Project C4, which its developers explicitly say isn't a Disco sequel.Instead, it's a gritty sounding game that's more Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy than James Bond. In the first part of a presentation announcing it with a teaser, C4's writers were introduced as Siim 'Kosmos' Siname and Jim Ashilevi, who worked on the original Disco Elysium as a producer/writer (citing Idiot Doom Spiral as a character he had a hand in) and lead voice over director respectively. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. The pair stated that over the past five years, among other things, ZA/UM has been "settling in a wider, expanded team, with many new faces bringing in their skills and fresh perspectives", adding that these devs have "learned how to work together and iterate, so we're able to make games for the long term".It's worth pausing here to note that, as you may well know, a lot of former original DE devs have departed ZA/UM in different and sometimes acrimonous ways since that game came out, including the likes of key writers Robert Kurvitz, Aleksander Rostov, and Helen Hindpere. As for this new game, it looks and sounds quite Disco Elysiumy. "As an Operant serving a questionable global power, the player finds themselves locked in a vicious, clandestine struggle for truth and influence," the plot summary reads, "Yet it is the mind that takes centre stage in Project C4. More vulnerable and more powerful than the physical world, it can be erased, changed, reordered, and of course significantly altered through regular use of psychoactive substances amongst other means." Gameplay-wise, amid all they spying, C4 "blends player introspection, deep character-driven dialogue, and high-stakes encounters steered by dice rolls".However, Siname and Ashilevi said the game is explicitly "not Disco Elysium 2". "We have learned a lot," Ashilevi explained, "Most importantly, we've discovered what we didn't want to be or do as a studio. We want to build on what we've done before, but not simply by repeating it, or rehashing it."In terms of the game, Ashilevi later outlined that Project C4 is "all about spy games, allegiances, and betrayals, adding: "It is not 007, with his hero complex, the Bond girls, and the gadgets. It it more like Slow Horses - doing the work you love, even if it does not get you any fame or parades. No heroes, only the stench of failure".More details about the game will seemingly be shared at GDC, so we'll have to see what they look like. For now, let us know how you feel about Project C4 below. Are you intrigued by it, or have the messy and controversial events that've followed the original Disco's release become hard to look past?

  • Random: Fan's 110km Journey To Draw Mario's Face Will Put Your Morning Stroll To Shame
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Damien McFerran / Nintendo LifeNo matter how hard you went on the MAR10 Day celebrations yesterday, we'd wager that you probably didn't put as much effort into marking the occasion as Guillaume Lazert, a French fan who embarked on a two-day, 110km (68 miles) trip just to draw Mario's face (thanks, NME).You see, Lazert is a self-professed "GPS artist", whose canvas is the walking app Strava and whose paint is... uhh, walking. By tracking his routes around Paris, Lazert has previously etched out images of the Eiffel Tower and an outline of France, but, for a MAR10 Day special, he decided to focus on something a little more gamey.By walking 50km on Sunday 9th March and biking a further 60km on MAR10, Lazert was able to map out a giant image of Mario's face when the route is viewed in Strava. Racking up 110km in a little over 10 and a half hours sure is on the longer side of a weekend stroll, but that end result is quite the view.Nintendeal shared the final route on BlueSky and our legs are aching at the mere thought of trying it ourselves:A Nintendo fan and "GPS drawing specialist" walked 31 miles and biked 37 miles to draw Mario's head across the city of Paris(Artist: Guillaume Lazert; source in French) Nintendeal (@nintendeal.com) 2025-03-10T20:15:51.573Z"My very first video game was Super Mario 64, on the Nintendo 64," Lazert told French outlet Le Figaro (via Google Translate), "It brought back a lot of memories during these 110 km! • Feature: But The Future Can Change - Chrono Trigger And Learning To Love The World
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Square EnixNote: If you haven't played Chrono Trigger to completion...what are you playing at? If you're sensitive to spoilers, come back when you're done as we discuss end-game details below...But... the future refused to change. For the most part, Chrono Trigger is a chirpy, cheery game. Its lightning in a bottle, a magical experience full of joy and excitement. Yet, there are few endings as gut-wrenching as Chrono Triggers 'Bad' ending.Youve spent hours travelling between time periods, rescuing innocent people, gathering allies, and seeing firsthand the evolution of Lavos, the cause of the apocalypse in 1999 AD and the origin of evil throughout history - throughout millions of years of history.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube798kWatch on YouTube Travelling to 1999 AD and taking on Lavos right before it causes the apocalypse, only to fail, is devastating. The future refuses to change, and Lavos takes all life, including yours. Life and the world collapse and grey out before your very eyes. This beautiful world youve become acquainted with that youve seen in six different times and witnessed the spirit of humanity change, adapt, grow, and evolve is gone. But the future refuses to change; its not that it cant. The words on the screen, in front of that greyed-out image of Earth and Lavos blood-curdling scream blaring out of the speakers, might feel like a gut punch, but it also serves as the fuel, the motivation, to get back in the fight to save the world.Image: Square EnixBut you already know that, right? In the 30 years since its release, everything that can be said about Chrono Trigger has been said. You dont have to accept the world as it is. Pursue your dreams. Fight for change. You cant change everything, but you can change some things.Where many time travel stories are cautionary tales that preach the dangers of changing the course of history, Chrono Trigger throws caution to the wind and says, Screw that: If you want to change the future for the sake of you, for the sake of the world, change it.Chrono Triggers message is poignant and, importantly, timeless. Things are crap right now, and I cant really get through a day without feeling like the world is going to collapse in some way. If I had my own Epoch, Id hop in it right now, travel through time, and do something to change the future. Thats what Crono, Marle, Lucca, and friends did. All because they love the world, and they love the people in it. And I do, too.Chrono Trigger throws caution to the wind and says, Screw that: If you want to change the future for the sake of you, for the sake of the world, change it.Chrono Triggers depiction of Earth is special, and it does something that very few RPGs manage to achieve it makes its setting a character through its use of time travel. Over the course of millions of years, you get to: experience a worlds make-up physically changing; spot similarities between continental shapes and town locations; see where certain islands have fused together, broken up, or even been completely wiped off of the map. The further you get through the game, the more similarities youll spot.Sure, its obvious when you compare 600 AD and 1000 AD. The Middle Ages and Present Day only have a gap of 400 years to contend with, and many locations are in the exact same places. Truce, Guardia Forest, Porre, the Heros Grave, and a few other places have barely changed, and even where islands have merged, their locations match. The Sun Shrine is present in every single time period. Even the Tyranno Lairs reappearance in the Middle Ages (as the Giants Claw), after millions of years, hammers home the importance of the world.Images: Square EnixThere are smaller details in all of the maps, too. The mountain range behind the Dactyls Nest in 65,000,000 BC remains all throughout history, even if it changes. Of course it would; rain, weather, and even human influence would erode the natural structures. The Ice Age alone seems to have created a more jagged range of mountains, compared to the lush green plateau of the nest millions of years ago.Traditions have even survived Earths turbulent history, just as in real life. Ioka Village is home to a small festival where the people dance. Crono, upon visiting the village, is challenged to a soup-chugging contest by Ayla, the chief. This is in 65,000,000 BC. At the beginning of the game, in 1000 AD, Crono can take part in a prehistoric dancing game at the Millennial Fair. He can also imbibe in a drinking contest not as safe as soup-chugging, kids, dont try that one at home.Chrono Trigger loves its world. And it loves its history. But it acknowledges historys mistakes, too. The events of 12,000 BC and the collapse of Zeal more than amplify that message. Because of Queen Zeal and the (aptly named) Mammon Machine because she tried to use Lavos humanitys innate ability to use magic was lost to time. There are people that want to correct that mistake, like Melchior, one of the three Gurus and the architect behind the Mammon Machine. He warned Queen Zeal of the dangers of using Lavos power, but was thrust forward to 1000 AD. He wants to change 'history' Antiquitys future, the Present Days past, and the apocalyptic future of 2300 AD.Images: Square EnixEven Chrono Trigger sets limits to what you can and cant affect, though. You can destroy Lavos at the Ocean Palace in 12,000 BC probably not until a second playthrough, mind you. But doing that doesnt change the future, it just thrusts you back to the End of Time where Gaspar, another of the three Gurus, resides, and allows you to talk to the staff who worked on the game.Chrono Trigger loves its world. And it loves its history. But it acknowledges historys mistakes, too.Defeating Lavos before killing the Black Tyranno doesnt really change much besides two things: Lavos is dead, obviously; and, oh, everyone is a reptite now and forever they never died out in this timeline. Otherwise, everythings largely the same. In another ending, if you defeat Lavos while Crono is dead, then eventually Gaspar will intervene in the celebrations and insist that theres still a way to revive Crono. There are many good and bad constants in all of these timelines, things that the party doesnt have the power to change.Image: Square EnixBut its also not fair to call catastrophic events like the summoning of Lavos in 12,000 BC, or Magus attempt to summon the creature again in 600 AD, a blip in the timeline, because of the suffering those events inflict. History can be painful, and things that happen in the past ripple. We feel the after-effects of events from over one hundred years ago; they wound people, physically and mentally, and can alter paths. All we can do is bear the sins of the past and do something with that information, to change the future.Despite everything, despite how bleak things are, there are things worth fighting forIts that undercurrent of history's weight and the power of change that makes storylines like Fionas resonate so strongly. Despite only being a sidequest, how important it is to change the 'little' things has stuck with me, too. Restoring a forest might seem like nothing in the grand scheme, but to Fiona, its everything. And to you, who has seen firsthand what happens, you want to give that one person a spark of hope. You have to go back, convince someone to plant a seed, defeat the monsters in the Sunken Desert, then have Robo stay and water and care for the forest.Image: Square EnixIn the present day, you can see the fruits of your labour at Fionas Forest, a beautiful, lush woodland which is home to the games timeless campfire scene, and is an example of Crono, Robo, and the others giving back. Its a small, positive change, and a beacon of hope. If we can do this one little thing, perhaps we can make a difference. Because we love this world, and we can make those ripples more beautiful, more positive. We can change the future.Chrono Triggers world is what sets it apart from almost every other RPG. Its small, but we become intimately familiar with it. Despite everything, despite how bleak things are, there are things worth fighting for: a better future.Yet even in the face of the apocalypse, Chrono Trigger can make time for a joke or two. It stands as a beacon of light against tyranny and evil, and its message resonates now more than ever before. Instead of The future refused to change, consider the words of a random nun in the Middle Ages:In our world, every storm has an end. Every night has a new morning. What's important is to trust those you love, and never give up. We must all keep hope alive Expect more "over the next year""Tackle life with as much energy as Goku! I'll try to do the same!"Worth a thousand wordsRelated GamesSee AlsoShare:02 Alana has been with Nintendo Life since 2022, and while RPGs are her first love, Nintendo is a close second. • EU AI Act: Latest draft Code for AI model makers tiptoes towards gentler guidance for Big AI
    techcrunch.com
Ahead of a May deadline to lock in guidance for providers of general purpose AI (GPAI) models on complying with provisions of the EU AI Act that apply to Big AI, a third draft of the Code of Practice was published on Tuesday. The Code has been in formulation since last year, and this draft is expected to be the last revision round before the guidelines are finalized in the coming months.A website has also been launched with the aim of boosting the Codes accessibility. Written feedback on the latest draft should be submitted by March 30, 2025.The blocs risk-based rulebook for AI includes a sub-set of obligations that apply only to the most powerful AI model makers covering areas such as transparency, copyright, and risk mitigation. The Code is aimed at helping GPAI model makers understand how to meet the legal obligations and avoid the risk of sanctions for non-compliance. AI Act penalties for breaches of GPAI requirements, specifically, could reach up to 3% of global annual turnover.StreamlinedThe latest revision of the Code is billed as having a more streamlined structure with refined commitments and measures compared to earlier iterations, based on feedback on the second draft that was published in December.Further feedback, working group discussions and workshops will feed into the process of turning the third draft into final guidance. And the experts say they hope to achiever greater clarity and coherence in the final adopted version of the Code. The draft is broken down into a handful of sections covering off commitments for GPAIs, along with detailed guidance for transparency and copyright measures. There is also a section on safety and security obligations which apply to the most powerful models (with so-called systemic risk, or GPAISR).On transparency, the guidance includes an example of a model documentation form GPAIs might be expected to fill in in order to ensure that downstream deployers of their technology have access to key information to help with their own compliance.Elsewhere, the copyright section likely remains the most immediately contentious area for Big AI. The current draft is replete with terms like best efforts, reasonable measures and appropriate measures when it comes to complying with commitments such as respecting rights requirements when crawling the web to acquire data for model training, or mitigating the risk of models churning out copyright-infringing outputs. The use of such mediated language suggests data-mining AI giants may feel they have plenty of wiggle room to carry on grabbing protected information to train their models and ask forgiveness later but it remains to be seen whether the language gets toughened up in the final draft of the Code. Language used in an earlier iteration of the Code saying GPAIs should provide a single point of contact and complaint handling to make it easier for rightsholders to communicate grievances directly and rapidly appears to have gone. Now, there is merely a line stating: Signatories will designate a point of contact for communication with affected rightsholders and provide easily accessible information about it.The current text also suggests GPAIs may be able to refuse to act on copyright complaints by rightsholders if they manifestly unfounded or excessive, in particular because of their repetitive character. It suggests attempts by creatives to flip the scales by making use of AI tools to try to detect copyright issues and automate filing complaints against Big AI could result in them simply being ignored. When it comes to safety and security, the EU AI Acts requirements to evaluate and mitigate systemic risks already only apply to a subset of the most powerful models (thosetrained usingUS pressureUnmentioned in the EU press release about the latest draft are blistering attacks on European lawmaking generally, and the blocs rules for AI specifically, coming out of the U.S. administration led by president Donald Trump. At the Paris AI Action summit last month, U.S. vice president JD Vance dismissed the need to regulate to ensure AI is applied safety Trumps administration would instead be leaning into AI opportunity. And he warned Europe that overregulation could kill the golden goose. Since then, the bloc has moved to kill off one AI safety initiative putting the AI Liability Directive on the chopping block. EU lawmakers have also trailed an incoming omnibus package of simplifying reforms to existing rules that they say are aimed at reducing red tape and bureaucracy for business, with a focus on areas like sustainability reporting. But with the AI Act still in the process of being implemented, there is clearly pressure being applied to dilute requirements. At the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona earlier this month, French GPAI model maker Mistral a particularly loud opponent of the EU AI Act during negotiations to conclude the legislation back in 2023 with founder Arthur Mensh claimed it is having difficulties finding technological solutions to comply with some of the rules. He added that the company is working with the regulators to make sure that this is resolved. While this GPAI Code is being drawn up by independent experts, the European Commission via the AI Office which oversees enforcement and other activity related to the law is, in parallel, producing some clarifying guidance that will also shape how the law applies. Including definitions for GPAIs and their responsibilities. So look out for further guidance, in due time, from the AI Office which the Commission says will clarify the scope of the rules as this could offer a pathway for nerve-losing lawmakers to respond to the U.S. lobbying to deregulate AI.

  • Meet the new VC firm secretly backed by Volkswagen
    techcrunch.com
A new venture firm called Leitmotif has been on a quiet blitz for the last 16 months, funding around 20 startups broadly focused on decarbonization. Its portfolio includes EV companies, space and battery plays, and four nuclear fusion startups. But the firm has only said its funding is from European industrial interests. Now, Leitmotif has told TechCrunch where the money came from: the Volkswagen Group. The German automotive giant has committed $300 million to Leitmotifs first fund and is its sole limited partner; Leitmotif has deployed roughly one third of that so far.During a conference on Tuesday, Volkswagen Groups CEO Oliver Blume said Leitmotifs investments could help lower the automakers carbon footprint and develop a circular economy inside and outside the company. Volkswagen culture is team culture, he said.Leitmotif wants to go even further, according to the young firms managing partners Matt Trevithick and Jens Wiese. They hope to spin up successive funds that draw in more European industrial interest beyond Volkswagen. Its an ambitious effort. Securing funding for hardware startups, especially ones with a serious manufacturing component, has been tough the last few years. But Trevithick believes its the right time to try to invest in these kinds of companies.Technology has always been a driver of human progress, and I think the United States is about to supercharge that, he told TechCrunch. I think the next several years are about to produce a number of technical capabilities in the United States that the rest of the world will marvel at.Leitmotif is also building a transatlantic fund while the geopolitical environment is being strained by the Trump administration.Despite that turmoil, Wiese who was the head of Volkswagen Groups M&A, Investment Advisory, and Partnerships division before starting Leitmotif said the overarching goal of the new firm is to create a bridge between the European industrial establishment and the US innovation ecosystem.Priority one: make moneyTrevithick and Wiese said Volkswagen had a top priority when it agreed to invest in the fund: make money.First and foremost, this is about setting up a successful venture firm, Wiese said. While Volkswagen Group rakes in hundreds of billions of dollars per year in revenue, Wiese said making money is still important in part because its how the industry keeps score. After that, the VC firm said it plans to invest in category defining companies within our fields of interest, according to Wiese, and also identify new pockets of innovation that could benefit the Volkswagen Group.Wiese said he expects roughly one quarter of Leitmotifs portfolio over time to interact with Volkswagen and its myriad brands.EV truck startup Harbinger is one example. Leitmotif co-led Harbingers $100 million Series B in January, and Wiese said the startup has had discussions about collaborating with Volkswagens trucking division.Geographically, Leitmotifs investment strategy is structured so that roughly 70% of its capital will be deployed in the U.S., with the other 30% being invested in the E.U. The firm will maintain offices in both Palo Alto and in Munich.Trevithick said 70% of Leitmotifs global investments in this first fund will be made in startups that are solving todays known problems and exist in billion dollar plus markets with customers ready to buy the innovation. The other 30% of the fund will be focused on what he called revolutionary innovation that will create billion dollar markets in the 2030s and beyond. So far, this strategy has led to investments in battery recycling company Redwood Materials, reusable rocket company Stoke Space, and even circular polyester startup Syre. Leitmotif has publicly backed 13 startups to date, though there are more in its portfolio that have not been announced.Leitmotif will eventually have other funds; Trevithick and Wiese said theyre particularly eyeing robotics and AI next. Volkswagen will have the right to invest in those if it chooses, but Leitmotif is independent and, for now, focused on finishing out its first fund.Timing is everythingLate 2023 was arguably the worst time for startups in recent memory to lock down large funding rounds, especially ones focused on hardware or deep tech, thanks to high interest rates.Trevithick said that made it a great time to start Leitmotif. Its in down markets when the strong companies separate from the weak. In a bubble, everyone gets funded, he said. That fundraising slowdown caused other firms to take fewer risks outside the startups they were already invested in, Trevithick said. There were less new dollars available to fund good companies that were there, because everyone got myopic about their own portfolio, he said. I think thats why we got a lot of inbound interest to participate in rounds that, in the bubble time, maybe we wouldnt have had access to.That interest came in large part thanks to Wieses and Trevithicks backgrounds.Wiese spent nearly 8 years at Volkswagen Group, where he ran mergers, acquisitions, and investments for the German automaker. During this stint at Volkswagen, Wiese developed what he called quite a deep network into the venture community, both in Europe and in the U.S. That included forging a relationship with battery maker QuantumScape, where Wiese was a board member until 2024.Trevithick, meanwhile, was a partner at Venrock for a decade. There, he focused on making investments in green energy during the original clean tech boom in the early 2010s, with his highest-profile bet being an early one on battery maker Atieva the company that eventually became Lucid Motors.Investing, advising, and guiding companies through the subsequent clean tech bust was valuable experience for navigating the uncertainty currently plaguing the industry, Trevithick said. While many corporate net zero goals are being either hedged or abandoned outright, Trevithick said the clean tech industry is starting in a much better position this time around.Plus, Trevithick said he believes the unpredictability will present more opportunity for firms like Leitmotif and the startups it backs.I think we can all agree its just going to be a highly volatile environment. Which should disproportionately favor entrepreneurs, startups, and venture capitalists, he said.We feel very confident about our portfolio, Wiese added. Yes, [decarbonization] is our overarching theme. At the same time, we invest in companies where we are convinced they have the business case to succeed regardless of what, lets say, the theme of the day is.This story has been updated with comments from Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume.
