  • Mortgage Predictions for March 2025: Rates Fall As Economic Concerns Ramp Up
    www.cnet.com
Mortgage rates are on a bit of a downward trend, with the average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage dropping from the 6.9% range in early February to around 6.7% this week. But a shaky economy will likely keep the housing market frozen for a while.US stocks tumbled after President Donald Trump refused to rule out a full-blown recession in an interview Sunday. Prospective homebuyers are bracing for what Trump is now calling "a period of transition," with steeper inflation, economic austerity and a slowing job market. TAX SOFTWARE DEALS OF THE WEEK H&R Block Free Simple Tax Returns eFile: $0 (save $0) TurboTax Deluxe 2024 (Federal and State, PC/Mac Download): $56 (save $24) TurboTax Premier 2024 (Federal and State, PC/Mac Download): $83 (save $32) TaxSlayer Classic Plan: $28 (save $10) Deals are selected by the CNET Group commerce team, and may be unrelated to this article.Higher unemployment reduces consumer spending and slows demand, generally leading to lower mortgage rates, according toColin Robertson, a mortgage industry expert and founder of The Truth About Mortgage website. Robertson added that "with uncertainty regarding tariffs, trade, and government spending, mortgage rates might be stuck in limbo."Housing giant Fannie Mae expects average mortgage rates to remain above 6.5% for most of the year. Lenders set rates depending on a range of factors, including investor expectations and the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. Any shift in the economic outlook could change mortgage forecasts over the coming months. What's causing lower mortgage rates this week?Growing concerns over the Trump administration's turbulent economic agenda have decreased investor confidence in the stock market and increased demand for bonds, lowering their yields. Falling bond yields translate to lowerborrowing costs for homebuyers(the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage is closely tied to the 10-year Treasury note). When lower mortgage rates are based on an expectation of slower economic growth, that's "far from a desirable economic environment," according toMatt Colyar, an economist at Moody's Analytics. "This is not a rosy picture," Colyar said. In any case, slightly lower home loan rates this month won't change the housing affordability equation, especially when household incomes can't keep up with the high cost of living. Today's mortgage rates are still higher than they were last September, as shown below. What impact will the Fed have on rates? The big question is how new jobs data and fiscal tightening will influence the Federal Reserve'sinterest rate adjustments in the coming months. While the Fed doesn't directly set mortgage rates, changes to its benchmark federal funds rate impact other consumer borrowing rates, like home loans, over the longterm. After inflation had showed ongoing signs of slowing in late 2024, the Fed reduced interest rates three times. Yet, at its upcoming meeting on March 19, the central bank is unlikely to make any cuts. Duringa forum in New Yorklast Friday, Fed chair Jerome Powell reiterated the need to hold rates steady based on the unpredictable effects of government policy. "We are well positioned to wait for greater clarity," Powell said.Markets anticipate that the Fed could resume cutting interest rates in May or June when it's clear if there is an increased risk of a job-loss recession. The wave of federal layoffs and job cuts has not yet been reflected as a sustained trend in labor data. "It's going to take more than one month of negative employment data for the Fed to change its policy stance," said Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter. While today's mortgages are expensive compared with the 2% interest rates of the pandemic era, experts say rock-bottom rates won't return unless there's another severe economic downturn. Though rates could continue to decrease, they aren't likely to fall much below 6% by the end of 2025. Expert tips for homebuyers With thespring homebuying seasonfast approaching, prospective homebuyers are left wondering whether to enter the market or continue waiting on the sidelines. It's never a good idea to rush intobuying a homewithout establishing a clear budget. Here's what experts recommend before purchasing a home: Build your credit score. Your credit score will help determine whether you qualify for a mortgage and at what interest rate. A credit score of 740 or higher will help you qualify for a lower rate. Save for a bigger down payment.A larger down payment allows you to take out a smaller mortgage and get a lower interest rate from your lender. If you can afford it, a down payment of at least 20% will also eliminate private mortgage insurance. Shop for mortgage lenders.Comparing loan offers from multiple mortgage lenders can help you negotiate a better rate. Experts recommend getting at least two to three loan estimates from different lenders. Consider mortgage points. You can get a lower mortgage rate by buying mortgage points, with each point costing 1% of the total loan amount. One mortgage point equals a 0.25% decrease in your mortgage rate.More on today's housing market

March 12, 20253 min readThe Latest on Bird Flu Research, Infected Cats, and MoreNo new human cases of avian influenza have been reported, and poultry infections are low so far in March. But infections in cats are continuing, and new research is raising concerns about the virusBy Meghan Bartels edited by Lauren J. The number is just more than half of Januarys tally. To date, March has seen 220,000 birds die.Dairy cattle cases: California has reported six new herds of dairy cattle infected with avian influenza this month, bringing the national total to 983 herds infected since the current outbreak began.Infections in CatsBird flu infections in domestic cats remain concerning, and there have been a few relevant new developments on the issue. The U.S. Department of Agricultures Animal and Plant Health Inspection Servicethe office that is monitoring the avian influenza outbreak in domestic and wild animalshas not announced any new detections of bird flu in mammals since March began. Several local officials have recently announced new cases in pet cats, however. The reports include two cats in Kansas without specified potential exposure routes, outdoor cats in New Jersey, cats that drank raw milk in Los Angeles and cats that ate raw food in Washington State and Oregon. In conjunction with the cases in Washington State and Oregon cases, on March 1 a Washington-based company called Wild Coast Raw voluntarily recalled some of its raw cat food after the H5N1 virus was found in the product. This was at least the third instance in which raw pet food was connected to infected pet cats in recent months. Experts have encouraged people to protect pet cats from bird flu by keeping them inside and not feeding them raw food or milk.According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bird flu symptoms in pets include fever, fatigue, poor appetite, red or inflamed eyes, discharge from the nose or eyes, trouble breathing and neurological effects, including tremors and blindness.New Research on the VirusScientists recently released two new interesting findings about avian influenza genetics and transmission potential. The first was reported in a paper published in Emerging Microbes & Infections that analyzed a bird flu strain that infected poultry farms in British Columbia in late 2024. Scientists found that, in this area, the virus that has been killing poultry across North America picked up a mutation from a local, less pathogenic avian influenza virus. This mutation is often found in flu strains that are resistant to oseltamivir, a common influenza treatment for humans that is sold under the brand name Tamiflu. The mutation detection raises concerns that if the strain were to spread more widely and infect humans, it would be difficult to mitigate. The second finding was described in a preprint paper that is currently awaiting peer review and publication. In the study, researchers confirmed that pigs can be infected by the avian influenza virus strain that is circulating most prevalently in U.S. dairy cattle. Thats concerning because pigs are a key species for influenza transmission; they are vulnerable to infection by both avian and human varieties of flu. If the same pig was infected by both avian and human types of flu virus, the viruses could intermix, creating a new, dangerous avian influenza strain that could be better equipped to infect humans.Bird Feeder QuestionsGenerally, experts advise caution around dead wild birds. But with high levels of avian influenza circulating in wildlife, we wondered whether bird feeders could be dangerous for wild animals or a source of exposure for humans. In 2022, the U.S. Department of Agriculture recommended that people who keep poultry remove feeders, but additional guidance has been scarce. Krysten Schuler, a wildlife disease ecologist at Cornell University, says that, assuming you dont you probably dont need to take down your feeders because avian influenza doesnt affect all species equally.Birds that visit feeders tend to be small perching ones that are scientifically known as passerines. We havent seen a lot of [highly pathogenic avian influenza] in passerines that you would encounter at a bird feeder, Schuler says. She recommends sticking with her usual maintenance advice: clean the feeder every two weeks or so to prevent a range of infections and call the state wildlife management agency to report dead wild birds.

  • Why aren't there romances in Avowed? Obsidian explains

Why aren't there romances in Avowed? Obsidian explains"Doing romance and doing romance well are two very different propositions."Image credit: Eurogamer / Obsidian News by Robert Purchese Associate Editor Published on March 12, 2025 Romance has become increasingly common in role-playing games in recent years, having had central roles in Baldur's Gate 3, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and Cyberpunk 2077, to name a recent few. But it was conspicuously absent from Obsidian's latest RPG, Avowed, and I am not the only person to wonder why.I had a chance to ask game director Carrie Patel why this was the case during a post-release interview about Avowed, and it turns out Patel had a lot on the matter to say. "Doing romance and doing romance well are two very different propositions," she said. For starters, it's important that non-player characters don't lose their sense of self in a game just because you've shown romantic interest in them. "Part of doing romance well means not only a compelling romance path but also one that is faithful to the character being romanced," she said."It's always a bit of a letdown when you see a character who has a clear personality, and goals and interests, and suddenly, in the service of this romance that the player has embarked on with them, they now become the player's yes-person; they're happy with whatever you want and lose their sense of personhood."To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Watch on YouTubeNumber two: romance shouldn't be the only way you can get closer to, and deeper with, someone. A relationship should not only depend on - or be gatekept by - romantic interest. "You need an equally compelling platonic path," Patel said, "because it's a shame if romance is the only right way to really get to that full level of depth with a character."Finally - and Patel said she sees this a lot as developer and a player - if romance is used as a mechanic then it will be treated as one, potentially detracting from why it was there in the first place. "The more you introduce romance as a mechanic, and the more that you build systems around it, and metrics, and ways for players to bolster and measure their affinity and affection level with other characters, the more it becomes something people engage with as a system rather than as a relationship," she said.Avowed, contrary to popular belief, does have a kind of companion relationship in it, but this isn't telegraphed at all through the game, or teased, or incentivised. You'll come across it if you speak regularly with the companion in question - I don't want to spoil who it is - but the intention was it should come up organically rather than be something you aim for."There's nothing that says 'hey this is a thing that can happen' - there's no system that's going to track your status with them - but if you're doing the kinds of things that you would do if you were interested in this character, you'll probably come across the option by the end of the game," Patel said. "And it should feel natural, organic, and surprising." Oh but Yatzli, what could you mean? | Image credit: Eurogamer / ObsidianThis reminds her of a character from The Outer Worlds - Obsidian's sci-fi RPG, a sequel for which it's working on right now - called Parvati Holcomb, who we praised on Eurogamer in an article about asexual representation in games."What works so well about the Parvati bar scene in The Outer Worlds is it just feels believable and relatable, because who hasn't gotten a drink with a friend and talked them through their romantic predicaments?" Patel said. "And by the same token, finding a relationship - an affection that blooms between you and someone you're spending a lot of time with - that's something that should feel organic and surprising, and not like this meter that you're tracking in the background to see how close you are to reaching the top."Avowed was released in February to favourable reviews. I called it "one of this year's most pleasant surprises" in Eurogamer's Avowed review, relishing the game's sense of adventure and carefree attitude towards fun. It's very refreshing. The game seems to have been a success for Obsidian and Xbox, too, leading to the question of what's next for it and the associated Pillars of Eternity series. Will there be a PlayStation 5 version, or an expansion, or a sequel? I put these questions to Patel in my Avowed interview and more.

    www.eurogamer.net
From serious Skyrim to cheerful fantasy: Obsidian on the evolution of Avowed and grappling with the "expectations that come from your own history""We always had a challenge to define exactly what we were going to be."Image credit: Eurogamer / Obsidian Feature by Robert Purchese Associate Editor Published on March 12, 2025 What a difference a few weeks make. It wasn't that long ago that question marks were still hanging over Obsidian's coral-coloured role-playing game Avowed. Promotional trailers had left people unconvinced, showing an adventure that looked old-fashioned and lacking in originality. Yet weeks later, Avowed has wide acclaim. "It's one of this year's most pleasant surprises," I wrote in our Avowed review. It's a game that went from being under suspicion to an unlikely Xbox star. Obsidian has proven three times in a row now, with Grounded, Pentiment and Avowed, that it can produce the goods consistently for Microsoft, and do it in a way that's less risky than betting everything on each project it makes. In stormy seas, Obsidian's boat seems, blessedly, buoyant."At Obsidian, we've always been very upfront that we make very ambitious games but we don't have 400-person teams; we are working off a budget," Avowed game director Carrie Patel tells me in a video call. It's a limitation I think it took many people, myself included, a while to understand about Avowed. Some had assumed that as the studio's first game bankrolled by owner Microsoft, after years of independence, it would have significantly more resources available to it. But that wasn't the case."Avowed very intentionally has a focused scope," Patel says. "This isn't a game where we're trying to create an endless playground that players can sink hundreds of hours into. This is something where we had a very clear experience in mind. We had a story to tell, we had several corners of this very beautiful world that we wanted to take players through, and we wanted to make sure that experience was dense, entertaining and varied, and then players are going to roll credits and maybe they'll start a new game." It's a retro approach that she says players responded really warmly to. I was one of them.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Watch on YouTubeBut there's no pleasing everyone. Obsidian has a long history: founded in 2003, it's made all kinds of role-playing games in those 20-plus years, from South Park games to Fallout and Star Wars games (and it has pitched ideas for many more). That legacy has a weight to it, especially when people perhaps preferred what you made in the past. "There's a degree to which you can't ever fully escape the expectations that come from your own history," says Patel. There are those who compare Avowed to "maximalist" RPGs that try to offer everything, as she calls them, and wonder why her game doesn't have, say, lockpicking, or kill-everyone-style full world interactivity (though there are decisions you can make in the game that affect hundreds and possibly thousands of lives). I have personally wondered, for similar reasons, why Avowed doesn't have companion romance - a feature so commonplace in RPGs nowadays it feels conspicuous by its absence. Well, according to Patel, "Doing romance and doing romance well are two very different propositions.""There were earlier visions and designs where this was going to be a larger game, a full open world, and multiplayer was going to be a part of it"Doing romance well means a few things, she explains. One part is ensuring characters retain their integrity when you romance them, and don't drop everything - their sense of self, their beliefs - the moment you show an interest in them. "It's always a bit of a letdown when you see a character who has a clear personality, and goals and interests, and suddenly, in the service of this romance that the player has embarked on with them, they now become the player's yes-person," Patel says.Secondly, if you're offering a romantic path with a companion, you should also offer an equally compelling platonic path, "because it's a shame if romance is the only right way to really get to that full level of depth with a character". Finally, Patel adds, "a thing that I see a lot as a developer and also a player, is the more you introduce romance as a mechanic, and the more that you build systems around it, and metrics, and ways for players to to bolster and measure their affinity and affection level with with other characters, the more it becomes something people engage with as a system rather than as a relationship."Avowed does have the option of a companion romance, however, it's just not signposted in ways we're used to. It will naturally arise if you talk consistently with the character in question - I wouldn't want to spoil who it is - but the point is that it will do so unexpectedly; you won't play for it. "It should feel natural, organic, and surprising," Patel says. Romance could be in the air. But with whom? | Image credit: Eurogamer / ObsidianBut managing expectations is something Obsidian has been doing with Avowed ever since it was first revealed in the summer of 2020. Its first cinematic trailer teased a dark fantasy world that looked closer in tone to Elder Scrolls than the extravagant pink and purple and orange world we eventually got, with confrontations inspired by the Balrog in Mines of Moria. Watching the teaser now, it seems like it's for a different game entirely, and there's a reason for that: it was.The original idea for Avowed was quite different to the game we have now. Originally, it was going to be a tonally darker game and play like Destiny meets Skyrim, Patel told Bloomberg in a recent interview. This co-operative multiplayer idea was a key part of Obsidian's pitch to Microsoft when it was acquired in 2018, so when that deal went through, that's what it tried to make. "There were earlier visions and designs where this was going to be a larger game, a full open world, and multiplayer was going to be a part of it," Patel tells me now.But open worlds and multiplayer take expertise and a lot of resources to make, and a couple of years into development, Avowed was wobbling. Obsidian couldn't find a way to make the game multiplayer "while still preserving the elements that work very well in a single-player RPG of the kind we typically make", Patel says - presumably meaning the choice-and-consequence and dialogue that drives Avowed now. So, multiplayer was cut. In fact, the whole game was rebooted in 2021, which is when Carrie Patel - who'd worked her way up at Obsidian through the Pillars of Eternity series and The Outer Worlds - was made director of the game. The original Avowed cinematic announcement trailer from 2020. It looks like quite a different game, doesn't it?Watch on YouTubeThe other big changes Patel instigated then were downsizing from one large open-world to a handful of smaller zones, and changing the setting of the game. "It was still set in the world of Pillars of Eternity," Patel clarifies. "It was just set in a different part of the world, and there was a sense that the direction it had moved in didn't feel entirely true to the IP any more. There were different characters, it was a different part of the world, it was a very different story. But I probably shouldn't be too specific in case anyone ever wants to play with some of those ideas in the future," she says.By the time Avowed was re-announced in 2023, it looked like a drastically different game. In a "ripping the band-aid off" moment, as Patel puts it, Obsidian showed mid-development footage of a much more colourful-looking game - "something that felt very different from what a lot of audiences were used to and understood very clearly in terms of, like, a very grounded, grim, serious fantasy. It is grounded," she adds, "it is serious, but it's also very colourful, it's also very fantastical.""The wonderful thing about the reception Avowed has gotten is it shows that there is certainly an appetite for new fantasy IPs" People were confused, and in the years following it, this confusion lingered. Was it still a Skyrim-like game?Whatever Obsidian showed, it struggled to convince fans about the new direction. "We always had a challenge to define exactly what we were going to be and to make that very clear to players," Patel says. "So much of what works best about Avowed is the exploration and that's not something that you can really easily tease in a 90-second trailer. It's something that you have to be in the game experiencing for yourself." It wasn't until Obsidian put Avowed in players' hands, at shows and press events, that the reception began to warm.Game Pass is an extension of this now, helping the millions of people who subscribe to "dip their toe in" and try Avowed without having to buy it separately, widening the audience potentially significantly. But how large the Avowed audience is, Patel is slippery about saying. "I don't have a really firm metric," she says. "I've certainly been very happy, and all the folks I've talked to, both at the studio level and at the Xbox and Microsoft level, have been very happy with the reception to our game - to the number of people playing it, the amount of time they're spending in it. But knowing that some people are coming to our game through Game Pass, some of them are purchasing on a variety of platforms, I don't know that there is one specific metric or number I could give you."And the trailer Avowed was re-announced to the world with in 2023.Watch on YouTubeNevertheless, Patel is smiling, and it sounds as though Avowed has done well for Microsoft and Obsidian. And where there's success, there's often a desire for more. Patel hinted at a future for Avowed in a previous interview, saying, "Now that we've built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I'd love to see us do more with it."When I ask her about this, she says: "I couldn't say anything specific just yet, but I know we've got a wonderful team that really knows and loves this world, and has learned an incredible amount over the past four years about how to make a really strong RPG together."What exactly that means, it's unclear. In the near-term future, Obsidian is all hands on deck focusing on getting sci-fi sequel The Outer Worlds 2 finished. "We've got a lot of people who are transitioning onto their next projects," Patel says. It doesn't sound as though anything beyond bug fixing is happening on Avowed right now. But in the future, who knows? It's also unclear what Avowed's apparent success might mean for the future of the Pillars of Eternity series, for instance - might renewed interest in the world of Eora reawaken it? Pillars game director and Obsidian design director Josh Sawyer still seems to be working on the tabletop version of Pillars of Eternity, and there's clearly a desire for old-school CRPG experiences now, as proven emphatically by Baldur's Gate 3.Or perhaps Avowed will be how Obsidian carries the Pillars name on. Patel considers it a Pillars game, though not a direct sequel to Pillars of Eternity, or Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire. There's also a PlayStation audience still to be courted by Avowed should Microsoft decide to publish the game there, which I expect it will. (I ask Patel if she's tested Avowed on PlayStation hardware yet and she diplomatically answers, after a short pause, "I have not."). But the future seems bright for the game - and hopefully for the series as well, perhaps."The wonderful thing about the reception Avowed has gotten is it shows that there is certainly an appetite for new fantasy IPs," Patel says. "I recognise that some of our players are coming from Pillars and Deadfire, but I think for the majority of people, this is their first time in the world of Eora, so it's heartening to see that there is appetite for that novelty, that players are interested in jumping into something new. It certainly gives us a lot of enthusiasm and optimism for continuing to be ambitious, continuing to introduce players to new worlds, and bringing them into the games we're making and the things that are exciting to us."I know we're always excited to try new things."

  • Rise of the Ronin is off to a rough start on PC as it becomes Team Ninja's worst-performing major Steam launch in years

Say it ain't NiohRise of the Ronin is off to a rough start on PC as it becomes Team Ninja's worst-performing major Steam launch in yearsFor a while, it looked like Team Ninja may have finally figured out how to cultivate an audience on PC for its biggest games, but its latest release stumbles.Image credit: Team Ninja, Sony Interactive Entertainment. News by Sherif Saed Contributing Editor Published on March 12, 2025 If youre among the millions of players currently enjoying Monster Hunter Wilds, or the many others holding out hope that Assassins Creed Shadows wont be a disappointment, theres one other major March release that likely fell off your radar. That, of course, being the PC launch of Rise of the Ronin, the once-PS5 exclusive game from Nioh and Ninja Gaiden maker Team Ninja. The game arrived Tuesday on Steam with what could only be described as a thud.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Rise of the Ronin is finally on PC, some one year after its initial release on PS5. As Team Ninjas next big game, and the follow-up to the exceptional Nioh series, there was a lot riding on it kicking off a new franchise for publisher Koei Tecmo.Unfortunately, the game disappointed many of those who come to Team Ninjas game for a very specific experience, and failed to capture the more casual audience because of just how predictable and samey the experience it offers is, compared to its contemporaries. If you were hoping the PC launch would revive interest in the game, and perhaps allow it to make a better impression, youre sadly going to be disappointed.Rise of the Ronin has peaked at a meagre 12,105 players on Steam following its launch (via SteamDB), a far cry from the figures recent major releases from Team Ninja, such as Nioh 2, and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty managed to pull. This is particularly strange coming on the heels of Dynasty Warriors: Origins, which was a big hit for KT, peaking at a very respectable 69,483 concurrent players when it launched in January. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. The player reception to Rise of the Ronin isnt much better, either, with just under 1,000 user reviews on Steam, and an overall rating of Mixed. Alongside the usual cavalcade of complaints about performance, many players dont like how, well, Assassins Creed-y it feels.Granted, theres still room for things to improve throughout the week and maybe even get a boost over the weekend. Weve certainly seen games start slow and garner more players as word of mouth spreads, but those games usually start off with much higher numbers. Its hard to have high hopes, however, given that Ronins release is sandwiched between titans like Monster Hunter, and the upcoming Assassins Creed Shadows - another game also covering a similar era in Japan, and offering similar gameplay.

  • What Is My Render Missing? (Imperfections and Light Textures)

TutorialsWhat Is My Render Missing? (Imperfections and Light Textures)Feel like your 3D render is missing something? It might be that you need to play around with some image textures. by Greyscalegorilla What is an image texture? A Greyscalegorilla texture is standalone single image texture map, like a photo or pattern, that is used to add details such as roughness, color, or surface imperfections. Textures can be used on their own, such as gobo lighting textures and area light maps, or serve as one part of a material. In my experience, any render that I felt ended up looking the way I wanted to always includes one of these things. A gobo, area light map, or surface imperfection always adds that little bit of extra detail or texture that makes something really look realistic (if thats what youre going for) or professional. So, heres a little rundown on how to get a bit more detail in your work. Greyscalegorilla Plus members have access to hundreds of area light maps, gobos, and even HDRI within the Studio desktop app. If you arent a member, you can download the Studio app and connector for Blender (or your 3D app of choice) and get 50+ free assets, including a selection of gobos, textures, materials, and more. Gobos If youve ever seen a play or a movie (Im going to go out on a limb and assume this is the case), youve probably seen a gobo at work in real life. A gobo refers to a pattern that is placed in front of a light source in order to change the pattern that is projected. A gobo usually looks like a small metal disc that you can slide into your light fixture. The patterns created by gobos are often window blinds, tree limbs, or abstract shapes that help to create an interesting illusion or light source. In terms of working in 3D, gobos are very useful because they can create lighting effects without the need for extra geometry or elaborate setups. You can just plop a black and white image and connect it right to your light and it will project whatever pattern is in the image. In Greyscalegorilla Plus, we have a whole slew of different gobo options to choose from. We have anything from window blinds to flashlights and everything in between. If you want to use a gobo in Blender, all you have to do is create a spotlight, turn it up pretty bright (so you can see the effect of the gobo), and open up the shader editor. In the shader editor, with your light selected, you can check the Use Nodes toggle switch right at the top. This will create an emission node that has a handy little color slot. This is where youd drag in your image texture / gobo file (or if youre using Greyscalegorilla Studio just copy the path and paste it into an image texture node) and connect it to the color slot. Boom. Gobo. If you want to customize the look of the Gobo, you can change the spot size to make the overall pattern bigger. If you think the pattern created by the gobo is too harsh or sharp, you can change the actual size of the fixture itself with the Radius slider in the light options panel. Making the radius bigger will soften the shadows. Subtle Surface Imperfections Clean Material Greyscalegorilla Subtle Surface Imperfections Surface Imperfections Almost nothing in the real world is entirely clean. As someone who has spent a good amount of time doing product videography/photography, trust meno matter what you do, there will always be a speck of dust or a piece of hair or even a tiny tiny smudge on your subject. Therefore, if youre trying to make something look super realistic, you might (keyword there, might) want to add in some surface imperfection. Obviously, a huge benefit of doing product visualization in CG is that you can have a perfectly pristine looking product. However, if youre really trying to fool the viewer into thinking what youre making is real, thats where you want to consider surface imperfection. Were talking about things like deep scratches, light scratches, smudges, hair, crust, and anything else youd want to make your object look well, dirtier. To add a surface imperfection to your object, particularly if its a shiny object, all you need to do is connect your image texture (with some smudges or scratches on it) to the roughness slot in your shader. You might need to fix UVs or remap some things, but thats all there is to it. To control the amount of surface imperfection, you can always add a color ramp node. Bringing the lighter side of the ramp closer to the darker side will effectively add more contrast to your image texture, therefore making the surface imperfection a bit punchier or more noticeable. You can also drop in a math node and change it to multiply. Youll want that right after your color ramp node, and before your shader (roughness slot). This will give you a slider that basically turns up the amount of surface imperfection. Lighting with Area Light Maps Default Blender Lighting Greyscalegorilla Area Light Maps Area Light Maps An area light map is a beautiful thing. It gives you the ability to make a boring, square, and ultimately lifeless area light into something that behaves a little more like a real light on a real film set. This comes into play particularly with reflections. When lighting a reflective object, in the real world or in 3D, you need to pay close attention to the way your reflections look. Reflections are what lights reflective objects, not the light itself. So if you want interesting reflections, a plain boring area light isnt going to cut it. There arent really any perfect edge to edge white square lights in existence (aside from maybe an arri litepanel but thats beside the point). So, thats where an area light map comes in. To connect an area light map to your area light, its pretty similar to a gobo. You need to click the use nodes button in the shader editor, and then connect your area light map to the color slot on your emission node. This will give your area light the reflections (and a bit of the light quality/color) of the area light map. Whether its a big softbox look youre going for, or perhaps a couple of small tube lights to give your product that perfect specular highlight, its always going to be an improvement over an unnatural white square. Light Textures vs HDRIWhat's the difference between Greyscalegorilla light textures and HDRI? Lighting TexturesArea Light Maps and Gobo textures have a high-dynamic range, but are used with individual area lights in 3D software. Lighting textures allow pinpoint precision and realistic lighting conditions as if you were pointing a real light at your 3D object. HDRIGreyscalegorilla HDRI are panoramic images of real world locations and true-to-life studios and skies. HDRI are used to quickly create realistic environmental lighting in 3D, whether that is in a studio, outdoors, or even in space.
