Firefox's has been reimagined in 2025 to be fast, modern and inviting the first time you run it and every day after. We've always had your back on privacy, and still do. We think the browser should be a piece of software you can rely on to have your back, pleasant to look at and working seamlessly with the web.Is Firefox a trustworthy browser?Firefox is considered a secure and private browser. By default, Firefox blocks known third party trackers, social media trackers, cryptomining scripts and fingerprinters from collecting your data.Does Firefox use Google as a search engine?Yes, Google pays hefty royalties to Mozilla/Firefox for making them the default search engine in Firefox. That deal is worth around $400 million per year (as of 2021-2022) and makes up the vast majority of Mozilla's total revenue. Is Firefox better than Google Chrome?Firefox and Chrome are updated every few weeks, so it's hard to compare them over time. At one point, Firefox has offered advantages over Chrome in terms of RAM usage, but that claim can go back and forth depending on the revision (and the potential for regressions). Microsoft Edge and Apple's Safari have also made such claims, but in general all browsers are continually improving and beating each other.Firefox does offer better privacy and customizability (to an extent) and is a solid browser with lots of add-ons available. If you want the best customizability on a stock browser, you should also check out Vivaldi (Chromium based).Who owns Firefox?Firefox is developed by the Mozilla Foundation, a US-based non-profit that operates and controls the Mozilla project. Is Firefox based on Chromium? No, Firefox is not based on Chromium. In fact, Firefox is one of the last major browsers that isn't. Firefox runs on its own Quantum browser engine.FeaturesA sleek, clean Firefox design backed by researchGoing into the Firefox redesign, our team studied how people interact with the browser, observing their patterns and behaviors. We listened to feedback and gathered ideas from regular people who just want to have an easier experience on the web. We obsessed over distractions, extra clicks and wasted time. The resulting new design is simple, modern and fast and delivers a beautiful experience to support what people do most in Firefox.Streamlined toolbar and menusThe toolbar is naturally where you start every web visit. It's the place where you type a URL to go somewhere online. After web page content, it's what you look at most in Firefox. The new toolbar is simplified and clutter-free so you get to the good stuff effortlessly.Menus are where key Firefox actions and commands live. We've consolidated extra menus to reduce clutter and be more intuitive through the three bars menu in the upper right or by right-clicking to activate it on your computer screen. The new look reorganized and streamlined our menus to put the best actions quickly at your fingertips. When privacy protections are engaged in Firefox, the shield icon in the toolbar glows subtly indicating that we're working behind the scenes to protect you from nosy trackers. Fun fact: Firefox has blocked more than 6 trillion --- that's trillion with a T --- trackers since we rolled out enhanced tracking protection, stopping thousands of companies from viewing your online activity.. We're talking about tracking cookies, social media trackers, fingerprinters, cryptominers and more. Go ahead and click on the shield to see who and what Firefox is blocking... you might be surprised by what you find out.A new look for tabsBased on our research, we found out that more than half of you have 4+ tabs open all the time, and some of you have more, a lot more. And we feel that! Tab as much as you like, friends. Tabs got a makeover so they are now gently curved and float above the toolbar. It's an exciting change that also serves as a reminder that tabs aren't stationary. So grab those tabs, move them around and organize them as you like. Tabs also got a glow-up to be a touch brighter when active. What's NewNewMicrosoft PlayReady encrypted media playback is now being rolled out to select sites on Windows. Through this support, we are gradually rolling out a 1080p baseline and 4K Ultra HD support with key streaming partners. An added benefit is that viewers get less battery drain and better performance when streaming their favorite movies and shows.Wide Color Gamut WebGL is now available for Windows and macOS users! With this support, Firefox is bringing a richer, more vivid range of colors to the videos, games, and images on your screen. This implementation currently supports wider color (P3) profiles in 8-bit.WebRender hardware accelerated rendering is now enabled for most SVG filter primitives, improving performance for certain graphics-heavy content. Accelerated filters are feBlend, feColorMatrix, feComponentTransfer, feComposite, feDropShadow, feFlood, feGaussianBlur, feMerge and feOffset.Added support for macOS' new screen and window sharing selection features on macOS 15 and later. Support for macOS 14 will be added in a future release. The macOS session resume feature has been enhanced. Firefox will now automatically relaunch if it was open before a system restart, like after an OS update.Firefox now blocks third-party cookie access when Enhanced Tracking Protection's Strict mode is enabled.FixedVarious security fixes.ChangedAs a follow-up to our work to upgrade mixed content starting with Firefox 127, HTTP-favicons will now also be blocked if they can not be received over HTTPS instead. The Copy Without Site Tracking option is now grayed out when no known tracking parameters are found within the link. Additionally, more tracking parameter support has been added for websites such as LinkedIn and Shopee. Please report tracking parameters that aren't removed by filing a bug in Bugzilla.Previous Release Notes:Security Vulnerability fixed in Firefox 131.0.2, Firefox ESR 128.3.1, Firefox ESR 115.16.1Previous Release Notes:Fixed an issue causing some sites to not load when connecting via HTTP/2. (Bug 1908161, Bug 1909666)Fixed collapsed table rows not appearing when expected in some situations. (Bug 1907789)Fixed the Windows on-screen keyboard potentially concealing the web page when displayed. (Bug 1907766)Starting with Firefox 127, we're enabling a new anti-tracking feature in Nightly: Bounce Tracking Protection. This protection detects bounce trackers based on redirect behavior and periodically purges their cookies & site data to prevent tracking.Starting with Firefox for Android 128, the new tab strip feature for tablets is available for testing in Nightly builds! This enhancement makes tab management more intuitive and efficient, providing a smoother browsing experience for devices in that form factor. Please share your feedback on Google Play and/or the Mozilla Connect post to help us improve it further.Firefox now supports playback of protected content from streaming sites like Netflix while in Private Browsing mode.Firefox now has a simpler and more unified dialog for clearing user data. In addition to streamlining data categories, the new dialog also provides insights into the site data size corresponding to the selected time range.NewThe Copy Without Site Tracking option can now remove parameters from nested URLs. It also includes expanded support for blocking over 300 tracking parameters from copied links, including those from major shopping websites. Keep those trackers away when sharing links!Firefox now supports Content-encoding: zstd (zstandard compression). This is an alternative to broti and gzip compression for web content, and can provide higher compression levels for the same CPU used, or conversely lower server CPU use to get the same compression. This is heavily used on sites such as Facebook.Catalan is now available in Firefox Translations.Enabled AV1 hardware decode acceleration on macOS for M3 Macs.Telemetry was added to create an aggregate count of searches by category to broadly inform search feature development. These categories are based on 20 high-level content types, such as "sports," "business," and "travel". This data will not be associated with specific users and will be collected using OHTTP to remove IP addresses as potentially identifying metadata. No profiling will be performed, and no data will be shared with third parties. (read more)Nvidia RTX Video Super Resolution ("VSR") is now available in Firefox. RTX VSR enhances and sharpens lower resolution video when upscaled to higher resolutions and also removes blocky artifacts commonly visible on low bitrate streamed video. VSR requires at least a 20-series or higher Nvidia RTX GPU, Microsoft Windows 10/11 64-bit, and Nvidia driver version R530 or higher. The feature can be enabled in the Nvidia control panel.Nvidia RTX Video HDR is now available in Firefox. RTX Video HDR automatically converts SDR video to vibrant HDR10 in real time, letting you enjoy video with improved clarity on your HDR10 panel. It requires at least a 20-series Nvidia RTX GPU, Microsoft Windows 10/11 64-bit, and Nvidia driver version 550 or higher. The feature can be enabled in the Nvidia control panel.FixedVarious security fixes.ChangedThe URL Paste Suggestion feature added in Fx125 was temporarily disabled while the team investigates a potential performance issue. The feature will be re-enabled in a future release once the performance issue is addressed.

  • SpaceX scrubs Crew-10 launch attempt 40 minutes from liftoff
    www.digitaltrends.com
SpaceX and NASA have stood down from Wednesdays 7:48 p.m. launch attempt of Crew-10 to the International Space Station (ISS) due to a technical issue on the ground. With the four crew members strapped into their seats inside the Crew Dragon spacecraft atop the Falcon 9 rocket at the Kennedy Space Center, the countdown clock was stopped at 7:06 p.m. ET, and at the same time the call was made to scrub the launch attempt.Recommended VideosCommentators on the livestream said the problem centered on the hydraulic system that controls a clamp arm that links the rocket to the launch tower. Please enable Javascript to view this contentThe issue actually surfaced four hours before liftoff, with SpaceX engineers saying they were trying to resolve it. However, with about 40 minutes to go and with the issue still outstanding, it was decided to halt proceedings for the day.The next launch opportunity is at 7:26 p.m. ET on Thursday, March 13, provided the issue is able to be resolved.Commenting on the scrub during the livestream, NASA astronaut Jessica Meir, who flew to the space station in 2019, said: Flexibility is really the key to everything we do as astronauts. We know that the plan is always changing and launch scrubs are definitely a reality that we have seen happen over and over again.Meir added: Were ready for this, this is what we train for. We know that at the end of the day you may be lifting off, you may not be. Its definitely a bummer for everyone involved but we will again do as were trained and get ready for that next opportunity. The four Crew-10 astronauts NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov will now return to crew quarters at the Kennedy Space Center and await confirmation of a new launch time, which could be as soon as Thursday.Editors Recommendations

  • New Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan will pick up where Pat Gelsinger left off
    arstechnica.com
now bring the blue man group ads back New Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan will pick up where Pat Gelsinger left off Tan will start as CEO on March 18, taking over from interim co-CEOs. Andrew Cunningham Mar 12, 2025 6:12 pm | 7 Credit: Bloomberg Credit: Bloomberg Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreAfter a little over three months, Intel has a new CEO to replace ousted former CEO Pat Gelsinger. Intel's board announced that Lip-Bu Tan will begin as Intel CEO on March 18th, taking over from interim co-CEOs David Zisner and Michelle Johnston Holthaus.Gelsinger was booted from the CEO position by Intel's board on December 2 after several quarters of losses, rounds of layoffs, and canceled or spun-off side projects. Gelsinger sought to turn Intel into a foundry company that also manufactured chips for fabless third-party chip design companies, putting it into competition with Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC), Samsung, and others, a plan that Intel said it was still committed to when it let Gelsinger go.Intel said that Zisner would stay on as executive vice president and CFO, and Johnston Holthaus would remain CEO of the Intel Products Group, which is mainly responsible for Intel's consumer products. These were the positions both executives held before serving as interim co-CEOs.Tan was previously a member of Intel's board from 2022 to 2024 and has been a board member for several other technology and chip manufacturing companies, including Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), and Cadence Design Systems.Tan picks up the baton at a fraught time for Intel, which reported a loss of $18.76 billion in 2024, its first annual loss since 1986. Some of the company's competitors, including the likes of Qualcomm and TSMC, have reportedly at least looked into buying or taking a stake in the company or its foundry business, something that would have been hard to imagine just a few years ago.The company has a lot riding on its upcoming 18A manufacturing process, a rollout that Tan will now oversee. It's the first cutting-edge manufacturing process that Intel is offering to potential third-party foundry customers, and it's also meant to allow Intel to bring at least some of its own chip manufacturing back in-house. Recent Core Ultra CPUs and all Intel Arc GPUs have been made in whole or in part by TSMC.Part of Intel's turnaround is being funded by the US government, which passed the CHIPS Act in 2022 to funnel billions of dollars into domestic chip manufacturing. That law passed Congress with bipartisan support, but President Donald Trump recently called the law a "horrible, horrible thing," stoking fears that the administration may cancel future funding or attempt to recover funding that has already been distributed.Andrew CunninghamSenior Technology ReporterAndrew CunninghamSenior Technology Reporter Andrew is a Senior Technology Reporter at Ars Technica, with a focus on consumer tech including computer hardware and in-depth reviews of operating systems like Windows and macOS. • Android apps laced with North Korean spyware found in Google Play
    arstechnica.com
SECURITY VETTING? WHAT SECURITY VETTING? Android apps laced with North Korean spyware found in Google Play Google's Firebase platform also hosted configuration settings used by the apps. Dan Goodin Mar 12, 2025 6:03 pm | 1 Credit: Getty Images | Kirill Kudryavtsev Credit: Getty Images | Kirill Kudryavtsev Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreResearchers have discovered multiple Android apps, some that were available in Google Play after passing the companys security vetting, that surreptitiously uploaded sensitive user information to spies working for the North Korean government.Samples of the malwarenamed KoSpy by Lookout, the security firm that discovered itmasquerade as utility apps for managing files, app or OS updates, and device security. Behind the interfaces, the apps can collect a variety of information including SMS messages, call logs, location, files, nearby audio, and screenshots and send them to servers controlled by North Korean intelligence personnel. The apps target English language and Korean language speakers and have been available in at least two Android app marketplaces, including Google Play.Think twice before installingThe surveillanceware masquerades as the following five different apps: (Phone Manager)File Manager (Smart Manager) (Kakao Security) andSoftware Update UtilityBesides Play, the apps have also been available in the third-party Apkpure market. The following image shows how one such app appeared in Play. Credit: Lookout The image shows that the developer email address was mlyqwl@gmail[.]com and the privacy policy page for the app was located at https://goldensnakeblog.blogspot[.]com/2023/02/privacy-policy.html.I value your trust in providing us your Personal Information, thus we are striving to use commercially acceptable means of protecting it, the page states. But remember that no method of transmission over the internet, or method of electronic storage is 100% secure and reliable, and I cannot guarantee its absolute security. The page, which remained available at the time this post went live on Ars, has no reports of malice on Virus Total. By contrast, IP addresses hosting the command-and-control servers have previously hosted at least three domains that have been known since at least 2019 to host infrastructure used in North Korean spy operations.Even when not hosted in Play, the apps relied on a two-stage command-and-control infrastructure that retrieved configuration settings from a database hosted on Firebase, a Web application developer platform provided by Google. Google has since removed both apps and the configuration database from its infrastructure. In a post published Wednesday, Lookout researcher Alemdar Islamoglu wrote:KoSpy can collect an extensive amount of sensitive information on the victim devices with the help of the dynamically loaded plugins. These capabilities include:Collecting SMS messagesCollecting call logsRetrieving device locationAccessing files and folders on the local storageRecording audio and taking photos with the camerasCapturing screenshots or recording the screen while in useRecording key strokes by abusing accessibility servicesCollecting wifi network detailsCompiling a list of installed applicationsThe collected data is sent to the C2 servers after getting encrypted with a hardcoded AES key. Lookout researchers observed five different Firebase projects and five different C2 servers during the analysis of the available KoSpy samples which can be seen in the indicators of compromise section.A Google representative didnt respond to emails asking precisely how many of the KoSpy apps were hosted in Play and over what time span. The representative also said that the most recent app sample was removed from Play before it received any downloads but didnt reply to a request seeking data on other samples. The representative went on to note that Google Play Protect can detect some malicious apps installed on Android devices even when apps come from sources outside of Play.Lookout said it has medium confidence that North Korean spy groups tracked under the names APT37 (ScarCruft) and APT43 (Kimsuki) were behind the malicious apps.Android users should give careful thought to any app before installing it. Many apps provide no meaningful benefit at all, as was the case with the apps detected by Lookout. In other cases, a normal mobile browser can perform the same tasks. Anyone concerned the apps may have been installed on a device theyre responsible for should check the above-mentioned indicators of compromise, provided at the bottom of Wednesdays post.Dan GoodinSenior Security EditorDan GoodinSenior Security Editor Dan Goodin is Senior Security Editor at Ars Technica, where he oversees coverage of malware, computer espionage, botnets, hardware hacking, encryption, and passwords. • Critical Role's cofounders credit 4 things to stay friends after running a business together for a decade
    www.businessinsider.com
2025-03-12T23:07:01Z Read in app Critical Role's cofounders have been in business with each other for a decade. Robyn Von Swank/Critical Role This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? Critical Role, the nerdworld business giant, started streaming their show in March 2015.On March 12, the crew celebrated their 10th anniversary.Four of CR's eight cofounders shared what they think has helped the team stay together.Critical Role started as a birthday present for Liam O'Brien, who wanted to find a friend group to play "Dungeons & Dragons."More than a decade on, the team of eight runs a sprawling nerdworld business. CR has investments in everything from its main streaming platform to game publishing and animation production.During a conversation with Business Insider, the crew credited four tips that have kept them from falling out over the years.1. 'Share your thinking in advance'Travis Willingham, CR's CEO, said that talking to each other is his top tip to stay in business with one's best friends. Travis Willingham has been CEO of Critical Role for a decade. Robyn Von Swank/ Critical Role "It is so important not just to communicate how things are moving within a very complicated business but also to share your thinking in advance," Willingham said.He said that one of the CR team's "biggest advantages" is having eight cofounders."We have so many different perspectives. We come from incredibly different walks of life. We have different interests," Willingham said."There also has to be a ton of grace in just recognizing that some people have strengths in some areas, there are weaknesses in others, which the team works to support," Willingham said.2. Someone who's the 'beating heart of the group'Sam Riegel, a multiple Emmy-award-winning director who helms CR's animation push, said the crew is "stronger than ever." Riegel says he just really likes spending time with his friends. Robyn Von Swank/Critical Role The group's "secret weapon" isMatthew Mercer, the company's chief creative officer, who Riegel said functions as the team's "beating heart.""He keeps reminding us over and over to spend time together as friends," Riegel said.Mercer also often tells the group they need to have fun with what they're doing together while streaming their "Dungeons & Dragons" game live. If the audience likes it, it's a bonus."He keeps reminding us of that and it's a wonderful check-in, and it keeps us grounded," Riegel said.3. Keep your ego in checkO'Brien, who helms CR's literary production drive, said all eight cofounders are "very hard workers," and "level-headed" decision-makers."We manage, for the most part, to keep our egos in check," O'Brien said. O'Brien says the CR crew remembers they have a common goal they're striving for. Robyn Von Swank/Critical Role O'Brien said that when there are differences of opinion, the team remembers they have a common goal."Those disagreements when they do come up they're inconsequential in comparison to the dream that we're building together," O'Brien said."We are dangerously close to too many Emmys, though," he joked, referring to Riegel's win record at the annual awards show. "I think we could maybe win one more, but then beyond that, things might start to get dicey."4. Enjoy each other's company even during crunch timeMarisha Ray, CR's creative director, said it isn't uncommon for the cofounders to work 80-hour weeks. But they have a "strong foundation" now and help, from a broader team they've hired over the years. Ray, CR's creative director, said the crew has a bigger team, so the founders can take time for themselves. Robyn Von Swank/Critical Role "A lot of it has been building the building blocks so that we can also take a little bit of time to just enjoy each other's company," Ray said. She added that the little things matter like taking time to "enjoy each other's company" and ensuring they stay friends outside work.Riegel said what keeps him going is that one thing hasn't changed over 10 years: The crew really likes spending time with each other."I just want to hang around my friends and get margaritas with them and be around to experience these events with them and tell stories together," Riegel said. "That's it. Everything else is all extra."

  • Jurassic World: Chaos Theory Is Still the Most Exciting Part of the Franchise
    gizmodo.com
The surviving Nublar Five escape to Europe in the aftermath of finding out their former friend Brooklynn has now joined the bad guys in dealing with even more dinosaur danger in the next chapter of Netflix and Amblins animated Jurassic World franchise. In the trailer for Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, we reunite with the core group as they continue on their adventures in saving dinosaurs from corrupt hands. Castmembers Paul-Mikl Williams (Darius), Sean Giambrone (Ben), Darren Barnet as (Kenji), Raini Rodriguez (Sammy), Kausar Mohammed (Yasmina), and Kiersten Kelly (Brooklynn) return to reprise their roles. This time the Nublar Fives current mission takes them to Italy, where they join up with new friends including Bens totally real girlfriend Gia, played by Beatrice Grann, and Isabella Rossellini (yes, that one) as Nonna. Seeing these kids grow up over the course of both series has been a blast and the way the show has never pulled any punches with dino horror and tragic themes makes it such an underrated gem in the Jurassic canon. Its definitely been more engaging, exciting, and memorable than the recent live-action trilogy and were so happy its back for more. The kids trace Brooklynns journey into the world of dinosaur trafficking, where she might be getting in too deep to stay a double agent while her friends attempt to reach out to her. And really, theyre not kids anymoreand having the events of the films be used as a backdrop to this dark coming-of-age story has always worked really well in upping the stakes. Every season is so good and just builds from camp friendship forged during the Jurassic World opening era to its destruction, when the kids got castawayd into young adulthood. Now, theyre doing their best to cope with the responsibility they feel to keep each other and dinosaurs safe.It makes sense their experiences activated their drive to protect the dinos from those who seek to exploit them, though it seems one of them might have since taken up with the wrong cause. It appears this season catches up to the events of the last film with the scene that features those very large prehistoric bugs Dr. Sattler and co. had trouble controlling in Jurassic World Dominion. And who knows, it might tie into the events of the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth. Well keep hoping the kids will show up as live-action characters in the films. Tune in on April 3 for Jurassic World: Chaos Theoryseason three only on Netflix. Want more io9 news? The Roof House is a housing project that we designed from the process of discovering the homeowner's identity, aiming to create a design that reflects their personality and aspirations, creating a feeling uniquely theirs.Save this picture! On day one, the homeowner met with the IF team and gave us a clear, detailed list of what they wanted for their dream home. It covered everything from style to materials, which made it easy for us to understand. But we also wanted to bring some fresh ideas to the table. The homeowner's clarity made things easy for us when it came to crafting a design that ticked all their boxes. We figured that getting them involved in a design workshop could be a game-changer. It'd help us really nail down what they needed before we got down to the design.Save this picture! The IF team set up a workshop where each family member could talk about their day-to-day needs. We made some floor plan mock-ups and let them shuffle things around to their heart's content. It was fascinating to see how they envisioned the space and how each area connected. An interesting part was involving their children in the processthey drew their dream bedrooms, and the IF team incorporated those ideas into the final design. We also discussed design ideas together, showing them samples of materials and interior concepts to gather their input. This was all about making sure we were on the same page before diving headfirst into the design process.Save this picture! The initial brief for the Roof House was to emphasize a fully functional house with an exterior that is neither overly grand nor standing out. On a rectangular plot of 189 square wah, the owner is looking for a design that accommodates a family of four and one pet. The kitchen and common area were to be warm and welcoming for guests. Reflecting the owner's humble yet private nature, the house needed to be sizable enough to provide a cozy atmosphere where family members can easily access.Save this picture! In the design development phase, the IF team explored various architectural forms, we landed on a single slope roof that effortlessly covers the three floors. The master plan features a central courtyard with a double-height space between 1st and 2nd floors, while private spaces are tucked away at the back. This design gives the appearance of a single-story house from the outside. To enhance privacy, we incorporated a garden and carport at the entrance.Save this picture!Save this picture! The key element of this residential project is "The Roof." We experimented with several angles to find the perfect slope, ensuring the final look closely matches the envisioned outcome. The Roof House is a three-level residence where the architecture emphasizes a single-slope roof to subtly conceal its large size. The owners desire to see the movement of each family member while inside the house, fostering a sense of closeness.Save this picture! The IF team centered the layout around a central courtyard, connecting the living area, kitchen, dining, and guest welcoming zones. This arrangement creates a warm and inviting atmosphere for visitors. Family members on the second and third floors can observe activities through the central court while still maintaining the privacy of their bedrooms. The Roof House is all about hidden charm. Outside, it seems modest, but step inside, and you'll find a big, open, and connected space that's perfect for a family to grow and thrive together.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officePublished on March 12, 2025Cite: "Roof House / IF (Integrated Field)" 12 Mar 2025.
