  • Dwarf Lemurs Combat Aging During Hibernation by Reversing Their Cellular Clocks
    www.discovermagazine.com
A hamster-sized primate from Madagascar, the fat-tailed dwarf lemur is our closest genetic relative known to hibernate. They also tend to live longer than youd expect given their size. New research reveals a potential anti-aging mechanism within their cells. (Image Credit: David Haring, Duke Lemur Center)NewsletterSign up for our email newsletter for the latest science newsPerspectives on aging vary greatly by culture, with Western societies often associating youthfulness with health and success. While aging is a natural process, it is linked to numerous health issues, driving scientific efforts to better understand its mechanisms. At the molecular level, aging results from the accumulation of cellular damage, leading to physical and cognitive decline, increased disease risk, and ultimately, death.Researchers have long known that telomeres the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes play a key role in cellular aging. Each time a cell divides, telomeres shorten slightly. Factors like chronic stress, a sedentary lifestyle, and insufficient sleep can accelerate this process. Over time, telomeres become so short that they can no longer safeguard the DNA, leading to cellular dysfunction and aging.A research team from Duke University and the University of California, San Francisco, recently studied the effects of hibernation and food deprivation in dwarf lemurs. Their findings, published in Biology Letters, suggest that these small primates can reverse cellular aging, offering potential insights for age-related disease research.Metabolism in HibernationDuring hibernation, mammals undergo phases of metabolic depression, known as torpor, which are occasionally interrupted by brief periods of increased body temperature (euthermia) to maintain survival. The primary function of this process is to conserve energy during times of scarce food and extreme environmental conditions. These metabolic shifts create an ideal scenario for studying telomere dynamics, as telomeres respond to drastic physiological changes.Fat-tailed dwarf lemurs, the only primates known to hibernate for extended periods, spend up to seven months in hibernation. They lower their heart rate by 96 percent and reduce their breathing to just once every 10 minutes, only waking briefly once a week to warm up.Read More: Could Humans Ever Hibernate in the Future?Temporary Cellular RejuvenationTo examine the impact of hibernation on telomeres, researchers induced hibernation in 15 dwarf lemurs at the Duke Lemur Center by lowering temperatures to the mid-50s Fahrenheit. The lemurs were divided into two groups: one remained fully dormant, relying on stored fat for survival, while the other had access to food when awake and active.Genetic samples collected via cheek swabs and analyzed using qPCR revealed that telomeres in hibernating lemurs not only avoided shortening but actually grew longer. "The results were in the opposite direction of what you'd expect," said study author Lydia K. Greene in a press release. "At first, we thought something was off with the data."However, further analysis confirmed the findings: lemurs that experienced deeper torpor showed significant telomere lengthening, while those that periodically woke to eat maintained stable telomere lengths. This effect, however, was temporary within two weeks of emerging from hibernation, the lemurs' telomeres returned to their original lengths. According to lead author Marina Blanco, this lengthening may serve as a protective mechanism against cell damage that could otherwise occur during periodic warming phases.Life-Extending Stress ResponsesDwarf lemurs are not the only mammals that exhibit telomere lengthening in response to extreme metabolic states. Astronauts and scientists working in the deep sea, who experience prolonged periods of altered metabolism, have shown similar telomeric changes.Blanco hypothesizes that lemurs have developed a mechanism to enhance cellular survival by temporarily extending telomere length, potentially contributing to their longer lifespan compared to non-hibernating primates. This finding also raises questions about the connection between food deprivation and telomere elongation, though the direct link to longevity remains unclear. These results highlight the intricate relationship between telomere dynamics, energy balance, and hibernation. Understanding the mechanisms behind this phenomenon could pave the way for developing novel, safe treatments to slow or prevent age-related diseases in humans.Article SourcesOur writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards. • Where are St. Patricks remains? Its a hot debate.
    www.popsci.com
Marty Burns, who plays Saint Patrick, poses inside the ruins of Inch Abbey as the re-enactment of Saint Patrick's first landing in Ireland takes place at Inch Abbey on March 11, 2018 in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland. Charles McQuillan/Getty ImagesShareWith a feast day full of the color green, Irish dancing, parades, and beer, Saint Patrick is arguably among the most famous saints in the world. You dont have to be Irish or even Catholic to celebrate Irelands patron saint.Yet, for a faith steeped in the veneration of the remainsor relicsof saints, St. Patricks relics have been debated by historians, archeologists, and the clergy for centuries. Despite the large granite stone that marks the spot where his bones are laid outside Down Cathedral in Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland, its not entirely clear if that is Patricks true final resting place.Essentially, this is tied into the cult of relics, Niamh Wycherley, a medieval historian at Maynooth University in Kildare, Ireland and host of The Medieval Irish History Podcast, tells Popular Science. Ireland was in the jurisdiction of what we would have referred to then as Western Christendom. The veneration of the saints, and then by extension the veneration of their bodily remains or of items associated with them, is just a fundamental part of Catholicism.Who was the real Patrick? While he didnt really use a drum to get all of the snakes out of Ireland, Patrick was a real person. He was a fifth century missionary credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. He was born in Britain and was captured and enslaved by Irish raiders when he was only 16-years-old. Patricks six years as a slave would reinvigorate his Christian faith and fundamentally change him. While he initially doubted his abilities as a missionary, Patrick returned to Ireland in 433 CE where he baptized and confirmed the masses. Most historical sources say that he died on or around March 17 in the year 461 CE. Get the Popular Science newsletter Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. By signing up you agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. The majority of what historians know about him come from two short written works. In the Confessio, he details his spiritual autobiography and hisLetter to the soldiers of Coroticus denounces British mistreatment of Irish Christians. For me as a historian, the most important thing about Patrick is that we have surviving documents by him, says Wycherley. And despite that, most of our understanding of Patrick today completely ignores these two texts. I kind of find it funny and I think theres something really deep going on there. You can give someone a firsthand testimony of something, and it doesnt matter, people will believe what they want to believe. Fake news is not a new invention. Fake news has been around forever. The bone(s) of contentionFor historians and archeologists, this debate and the importance of relics and remains is not fully surprising. Humans as a species have a tangible pull to the remains of their dead, items of clothing, books, or other possessions of lost loved ones or icons. This kind of a veneration of the bodies of revered ancestors and respected individuals and communities, is something that cuts across a lot of organized religions, says Wycherley. In Catholicism, churches all around the world hold relics of saints and even Jesus Christ himself that serve as places of pilgrimage and for a connection to the greater Roman Church. It was important for a church to have this tangible connection with their own patron saint, says Wycherley. Patricks church was in Armagh and in texts, it mentions that the Armagh church has relics from Rome. But what Armagh doesnt have in the seventh century is a tomb or the body of St. Patrick. The Mourne granite slab marking the traditional burial place of St. Patrick at the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity also known as Down Cathedral in Downpatrick. CREDIT: Hugh Rooney/Eye Ubiquitous/Universal Images Group via Getty Images. In addition to being important places of pilgrimage, relics can bring in fame and quite a bit of profit and prestige to a church. According to Wycherley, churches have fought one another over the remains of saints and some relics were stolen.Armagh ultimately became the most powerful church in Ireland for many centuries, but it seems that maybe that wasnt necessarily a given, says Wycherley. There was a time period where maybe Kildare might have been the most powerful church. In the surviving texts from the 600s, Armagh seems to be trying to explain their way out of why they dont have the grave or the tomb of St. Patrick.Historians believe that if the church really had access to Patricks remains there likely would have been a ceremony, where the bones might have been dug up from a humble grave and then placed into a fancy tomb or inside the church.Propaganda, 1185 styleThe story that Patrick was buried at Downpatrick is also based on some propaganda during the late 12th century CEabout 700 years after Patricks death. In 1185, Anglo-Norman knight John de Courcy reportedly staged the discovery of the relics belonging to three saints including Patrick. He claimed to have dug up Patricks body and brought the relics into a new tomb at Downpatrick. While there is no way of really knowing if these were the actual bones of Patrick, the strongest evidence still supports that he was buried somewhere in Downpatrick.People have gotten permission to subject these bones to scientific analysis, which still wont tell you who the person exactly is, says Wycherley. But they can tell you if they are the remains of someone from that time period, what geographical area they are from. The best account we have is the Life of St. Patrick by a scholar named Muirch. This hagiographyor biography of a saintwas written in the late 600s. The hagiography is more of a religious work and not an account of Patricks actual life, its valuable for understanding the greater Irish church in the seventh century and Patricks impact. While we may not know the precise location of Patricks remains, his voice is preserved in his accessible writingswhether we want to listen to it or not.

  • These ancient Maya puppets may have been used in rituals
    www.sciencenews.org
NewsArchaeologyThese ancient Maya puppets may have been used in ritualsThe figurines indicate cultural connections with other parts of Mesoamerica These oddly expressive figurines from the ancient Maya world were probably puppets for ritual scenes and perhaps used for portraying people long dead.J. Przedwojewska-Szymaska/PASIBy Tom Metcalfe35 seconds agoFive oddly expressive clay figurines, made on the edge of the Maya world about 2,400 years ago, were probably used as puppets in public rituals to commemorate mythical or real events. They would have either represented actual personages, or they were generic media for rituals connected to rulers, says archaeologist Jan Szymaski of the University of Warsaw.Szymaski and his colleague Gabriela Prejs unearthed the puppets near the top of a ruined pyramid at the San Isidro archaeological site, a little under 50 kilometers west of San Salvador. The soil layer containing the puppets dates to about 400 B.C. But such figurines may have been used throughout the Maya Preclassic and Classic periods, from about 2000 B.C. to A.D. 900, Szymaski and Prejs report March 5 in Antiquity. This head of a male figurine, unearthed with others amid the ruins of an ancient pyramid in El Salvador, exhibits tattoos or scarification.J. Przedwojewska-Szymaska/PASIOne of the largest puppets is about 30 centimeters tall and depicts a man, while two others of similar size depict women. The three large figurines lack hair, but two smaller ones one almost 18 centimeters tall and the other about 10 centimeters depict women with locks of hair on their foreheads. The puppets had no clothes when they were found, but Szymaski thinks they were decorated for their ritual roles. Im pretty sure that they were given clothes and wigs in order to look more lifelike, he says.
