  • Konami's Japan-set Silent Hill f resurfaces with eerie new trailer and fresh details

Konami's Japan-set Silent Hill f resurfaces with eerie new trailer and fresh detailsBeauty in terror.Image credit: Konami News by Matt Wales News Reporter Published on March 13, 2025 It's been a good long while since Silent Hill f was unveiled as part of Konami's four-game series revival back in 2022. But now that Bloober Team's superb Silent Hill 2 Remake is behind us, the publisher is turning its attention to its curious Japan-set follow-up. And thanks to its latest Silent Hill Transmissions stream, we've got an eerie new trailer and a few more hints at what's in store.Back during its initial 2022 announcement, Konami revealed Silent Hill f is being developed by Neobards Entertainment (which has previously served as a support studio for Capcom's Resident Evil games), with creature and character design by Kera, and a script by When They Cry writer Ryukishi07. And courtesy of its latest update, we now know a little more.Silent Hill f is, for instance, set in the 1960s, its events unfolding in the rural town of Ebisugaoka - based on Kanayama, Gero, in the Gifu Prefecture. Here, we meet our protagonist Shimizu Hinako, an "ordinary teenager" who suddenly finds her home shrouded in fog and changed in "horrific" ways. As Silent Hill f play out, she'll explore a town she no longer recognises, solving puzzles, fighting strange enemies, and eventually having to make a "beautiful yet terrifying" decision that lies at the heart of the game.Silent Hill f trailer.Watch on YouTubeThat idea of "beauty in terror" is a theme Konami repeatedly returned throughout its latest Transmissions episode, explaining that while Silent Hill f retains the elements of psychological horror long-time fans will associate with the series, its setting allows it to deal with some more classically Japanese ideas, such as the notion that "when something becomes too beautiful and perfect, it instead becomes deeply unsettling".It also spent a bit of time addressing Silent Hill f's notable shift away from the titular town that's been the focus of the series since its debut in 1999. Sharing his own perspective, Ryukishi07 explained that while Silent Hill can be considered a physical place with a dark history, it's equally a series "about portraying characters' struggles with the evil within themselves - sin, discontent, and conflict - in a visually striking way". And this, he noted, is a concept Silent Hill f retains, adding, "It's a gateway into the psychological battles of the human mind."Konami also confirmed the return of long-time Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka, although this time he'll only be creating music for Ebisugaoka's Fog World. Music for its Otherworld (known as the Dark Shrine in Silent Hill f) will be composed by Kensuke Inage, whose musical credits include Tekken 8, Samurai Showdown, and Star Fox Guard. In a message shared during the stream, Inage explained his compositions will use "imagery from shrines, blending ancient Japanese court music with ambient echoes", all interwoven with techniques intended to connect the player to the protagonist's "agonies, internal conflict, fear, and other emotions."Elsewhere, Konami teased "creatures that really infiltrate players' psyches", alongside easter eggs for long-time fans to uncover, despite Silent Hill f's new setting. And that's pretty much all we're getting for now. Silent Hill f doesn't have a release date yet, but it's coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC - and Konami says it'll have "plenty more to share in the future". Until then, there's a new trailer, which you can watch above.Silent Hill f was one of four new Silent Hill games to be revealed back in 2022. PlayStation 5 freebie Silent Hill: The Short Message and Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 Remake launched last year, and its fourth project, Silent Hill: Townfall, is being developed by Stories Untold and Observation developer No Code. Annapurna Interactive is still set to serve as the latter game's publisher, despite a "mass exodus" of staff at the end of last year.

  • Anti-aging zealot Bryan Johnson wants to start foodome sequencing
    techcrunch.com
In the same way that genome sequencing determines the genetic makeup of an organism, Bryan Johnson the investor and founder behind the Dont Die movement wants to start foodome sequencing. Were going to sequence the U.S. foodome, which means test 20% of foods that constitute 80% of the American diet based on stuff we eat everyday, Johnson said Thursday at the SXSW festival in Austin.Johnson is the founder and former CEO of Kernel, a brain monitoring device company, the founder of OS Fund, and the founder and former CEO of e-commerce company Braintree.Today, hes obsessed with finding ways to extend his lifespan and preaching that gospel to others. He has taken extreme measures, including transfusing his blood with that of his 17-year-old son and undergoing shock therapy treatment to get more nighttime erections, which he says directly correlates to health. Most of his tips about life-extending habits are easy enough to guess: Get better sleep. Spend time with community. Exercise. Eat healthy. But Johnson says its not as easy to eat healthy as you think.I want to be real with you. Its just very, very hard to buy clean food, he said, noting that most foods from grocery stores, even the organic brands, could have toxins from various processing methods. His goal is to test as much food as possible and create a public database where people can donate money to have certain foods and brands tested for toxins such as heavy metals or microplastics. The results, he hopes, will hold brands accountable for unsafe food practices. The idea received a round of applause from the packed audience at SXSW, who eagerly participated in Johnsons various breathing exercises, prompts to move around, and a longevity experiment that involved balancing on one foot with eyes closed. (I made it to 30 seconds no big deal.)Johnson has faced a lot of hate online for his eccentric philosophy that with the advent of AI, we may be the first generation that doesnt have to die.We are giving birth to super intelligence. Its the biggest thing happening in the entire world now, Johnson said, adding that no existing ideology explains how to handle AI and that the survival of our species is no longer guaranteed now that AI has entered the picture. The human race would be wise to repurpose its objectives [around AI and] away from money at any cost to Dont Die.In other words, while we debate AI alignment with the human race, why not align AI with the mission of preserving human life? Why not, he asks, use AI to tap into millions of human-level geniuses to track human progress and tackle agings biggest challenges? Its a provocative question and one that has drawn criticism from skeptics who argue that dying is an essential part of being human.Dr. Andrew Steele, a longevity scientist, acknowledges that eating well and exercising helps extend life, but that genetics not extreme measures plays a larger role in determining life expectancy. But that perspective hasnt deterring Johnson from promoting his Blueprint Protocol, his lifestyle formula for maintaining what he says are worlds best biomarkers. Hes also marketing his own line of supplements and foods. His brand of olive oil is ironically or aptly named Snake Oil.

  • Sesame, the startup behind the viral virtual assistant Maya, releases its base AI model
    techcrunch.com
AI companySesamehas released the base model that powers Maya, theimpressively realistic voice assistant. The model, which is 1 billion parameters in size (parameters referring to individual components of the model), is under an Apache 2.0 license, meaning it can be used commercially with few restrictions. Called CSM-1B, the model generates RVQ audio codes from text and audio inputs, according to Sesames description on the AI dev platform Hugging Face.RVQ refers to residual vector quantization, a technique for encoding audio into discrete tokens called codes. RVQ is used in a number of recent AI audio technologies, including Googles SoundStream and Metas Encodec.CSM-1B uses a model from Metas Llama family as its backbone paired with an audio decoder component. A fine-tuned variant of CSM powers Maya, Sesame says. The model open-sourced here is a base generation model, Sesame writes in CSM-1Bs Hugging Face and GitHub repositories. It is capable of producing a variety of voices, but it has not been fine-tuned on any specific voice [] The model has some capacity for non-English languages due to data contamination in the training data, but it likely wont do well. Its unclear what data Sesame used to train CSM-1B. The company didnt say. Its worth noting the model has no real safeguards to speak of. Sesame has an honor system and merely urges developers and users not to use the model to mimic a persons voice without their consent, create misleading content like fake news, or engage in harmful or malicious activities.I tried the demo on Hugging Face, and cloning my voice took less than a minute. From there, it was easy to generate speech to my hearts desire, including on controversial topics like the election and Russian propaganda.Consumer Reports recently warned that many popular AI-powered voice cloning tools on the market dont have meaningful safeguards to prevent fraud or abuse.Sesame, co-founded by Oculus co-creator Brendan Iribe, went viral in late February for its assistant tech, which comes close to clearing uncanny valley territory. Maya and Sesames other assistant, Miles, take breaths and speak with disfluencies, and can be interrupted while speaking, much like OpenAIs Voice Mode. Sesame has raised an undisclosed amount of capital from Andreessen Horowitz, Spark Capital, and Matrix Partners. In addition to building voice assistant tech, the company says its prototyping AI glasses designed to be worn all day thatll be equipped with its custom models.

  • How is the Trump administration affecting architectural practice? Tell us how its going.
    www.archpaper.com
Were now over 50 days into President Trumps second term, which has brought rapid changes to the operations of the federal government. These shifts have broad impacts for architects, landscape architects, engineers, and others who are at work improving the built environment. So far, environmental regulations have been slashed; USAID has been gutted; staff layoffs are widespread at the Department of Education and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); and the GSA has been asked to offload hundreds of federal properties. As seen with the recent defunding of Columbia University and ICEs detention of Mahmoud Khalil, freedom of speech and academic integrity is also under threat. The Guardian recently reported that the U.S. is now on the Civicus Monitor Watchlist, which means the organization believes the country is currently experiencing a rapid decline in civic freedoms. On the flip side, there is some encouragement for domestic self-sufficiency. In a recent executive order, Trump sought to stimulate the timber industry, and some, like Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) and the National Association of Home Builders, welcome the clarification of the definition of the waters of the United States, among other environmental deregulations. Last month, ABC also celebrated the decision to restore merit-based competition for infrastructure contracts to build land port of entry projects procured by the GSA. The impact of steel and aluminum tariffs on construction has yet to be seen, and early news is mixed: According to New Hampshire Public Radio, steel tariffs could boost some local manufacturers but increase prices and hurt sales for others.Whats Happening in Your Workplace? As well as another lunar highlight on Sunday, this is also your last chance to see Venus and its looking absolutely stunning.Friday, March 14-Saturday, March 15: Venus As A CrescentJust after sunset, look low in the western sky to see the two innermost planets of the solar system Venus and Mercury. Although seeing Mercury in the post-sunset sky is a rare opportunity, theres something much more exciting to see tonight. Now just 3%-lit, Venus is on the cusp of disappearing into the suns glare. It will pass into the pre-dawn sky on March 22, but this weekend is the last good chance to easily see it and what a sight. See through any telescope, or even a big pair of binoculars, the crescent looks like a smiley face and is so slim, and low in the sky, that is shines in all of the colors of the rainbow.According to Spaceweather.com, thats because Earths atmosphere acts like a prism, separating the red crescent from the blue, with the splitting of colors so obvious because the crescent is so slim.Catch Venus and Mercury while you can before they both vanish into the twilight next week. Be outside 45 minutes after sunset and get observing because theyll sink into the western horizon within about 30 minutes.Sunday, March 16: Moon And SpicaStellariumSunday, March 16: Moon And SpicaBe outside looking east-southeast about two hours after sunset to see a 93%-lit waning gibbous moon rise just below a bright star Spica in the constellation Virgo. This star, which is 261 light-years from the solar system, is one of four that the moon passes close to every month. The others are Aldebaran, Regulus and Antares. However, this is a particularly close pass. The sight of Spica rising in the east is a sign that astronomical spring is almost with us.The times and dates given apply to mid-northern latitudes. • Firefox increased its market share in Europe thanks to Digital Markets Act
    www.techspot.com
The big picture: Europe's digital economy has been governed by the Digital Markets Act since November 2022. This law requires major mobile ecosystems to implement a browser ballot, a change that Mozilla believes will enhance user choice and promote market competition. The browser choice screens enforced by the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA) are having a noticeable impact on Firefox's ability to compete in the internet browser sector. According to a recent Mozilla post, the new regulatory framework helped the open-source browser increase its daily active users in two of Europe's biggest countries. The DMA covers several digital services, including browsers. Mozilla feels that the most empowering aspect of the DMA is the control it gives European users. Instead of being forced into a default engine, they can choose their desired browser. Mozilla Foundation researchers discovered that browser choice screens are powerful tools when well-designed and fully implemented.People prefer choices in any market. Mozilla found this especially true for personal devices like smartphones or other mobile gadgets. After the first DMA-derived browser choice screens started rolling out in 2024 for the iOS ecosystem, Firefox's daily active users increased in Germany and France by 99 percent and 111 percent, respectively.Mozilla noted that browser selection screens currently available on iOS and Android are a much-improved feature for mobile users. Starting in March 2024, new and existing Android users started getting prompts asking if they would like to stay with the factory default (Chrome) or switch to an alternative. More recently, new and existing iOS users with Safari as their default browser got similar choice dialogs after upgrading to iOS 18.2.It's worth mentioning that Apple had implemented a browser default prompt with iOS 17.4. However, it was poorly designed. Of course, mobile and PC users outside the EU haven't received such features and likely won't anytime soon. Mozilla also said that Firefox was able to win new users thanks to some of its advanced features, which include enhanced privacy controls, performance gain, and new productivity tools. // Related StoriesMozilla warned that Big Tech gatekeepers could hinder the DMA's ability to reach its full potential because some companies still lack proper compliance plans. However, despite its imperfect state, the new digital market regulations gave Firefox's European userbase a noticeable boost in just one year.

His plan is to use his $36,000 to get him out and invest in a pickup truck to kickstart their new venture. However, he encounters a corrupt police force that seizes his money under the guise of civil forfeiture, claiming hes holding onto illicit funds. Terry is forced to take on these dirty cops, with each move unearthing even more evidence of systemic corruption.Directed by Jeremy Saulnier, known for similar gripping films like Blue Ruin and Green Room, Rebel Ridge never quite reached the wide audience it deserved. Despite its critical acclaim, with a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the title of Best Movie Made for Television earned at the 30th Critics Choice Awards, it remains criminally underrated. An unflinching examination of police corruption and racial injustice, the 2024 film goes beyond escapist entertainment and is the perfect pick for anyone looking for a more thought-provoking watch.Rebel Ridge is streaming on Netflix.NetflixMartin Freeman stars as a desperate father, Andy, in 2017s Cargo. Set in the Australian outback, the film depicts a world where a mysterious virus has decimated civilization, transforming the infected into ravenous, mindless beings within 48 hours of exposure. When Andys wife succumbs to the infection, he finds himself racing against time as he himself is bitten and doomed to suffer the same fate. The main problem he faces is finding someone who will care for his infant daughter, Rosie, before that happens. Andy soon meets Thoomi (Simone Landers), an Aboriginal girl who believes she can save her infected father through her tribes spiritual rituals. While some of the more popular recent zombie movies have placed an emphasis on frantic, gory action, Cargo chooses a slow-burn emotional approach through its intimate father-daughter story. Directed by Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke, the film steers clear of the more conventional undead rampage in favor of a deeply affecting human narrative. Its success is largely anchored on Freemans heart-wrenching performance as a father who knows his fate is sealed, but spends his last hours refusing to give in to despair in order to give his daughter a fighting chance.Cargo is streaming on Netflix.NetflixHigh school senior Alex Truelove (Daniel Doheny) seemingly has it all a loving girlfriend, a solid group of friends, and a plan to lose his virginity before graduation. Suddenly, everything feels uncertain as he deals with feelings hes never confronted before, paired with awkward encounters and misguided attempts at suppressing his emotions. How is he supposed to explain this to his girlfriend Claire (Madeline Weinstein) and to their friends?Alex Strangelove is a rom-com and a coming-of-age movie that presents an honest take on the messy and often confusing journey of coming to terms with ones sexuality. Unlike many LGBTQ+ films that lean heavily on trauma, this one embraces joy and self-acceptance with infectious energy. Director Craig Johnson also infuses the film with a bright, fast-paced visual style, and a killer indie-pop soundtrack makes key scenes memorable. Crimson Tide, which stars Hackman and Denzel Washington as two officers on a nuclear submarine who have a fundamental disagreement about whether to fire their arsenal, is riveting and remarkably small scale.Almost all of the movies action takes place on the sub, and many of its biggest scenes are verbal sparring wars between its two central characters, who have a fundamental disagreement about what it means to follow orders. Washington is the movies hero, and hes one of the few actors who can hold his own with Hackman for more than 90 minutes.
