Casalgrande Padana’s Terrae tiles collection Earthy tones bring a timeless charm to everyday living spaces, and are conducive to a sensation of wellbeing. Casalgrande Padana’s new Terrae collection draws on colour shades offered by the pigments and precious minerals of the earth. Tiles in the Terrae collection are available in six colours (beige, white, caramel, brick, tobacco and taupe grey) and different shapes, including square (200×200mm, 600×600mm, 900×900mm, 1,200×1,200mm) and a range of rectangular options (82×250mm, 300×600mm, 600×1,200mm and 1,200×2,780mm). Different thicknesses, from 6mm to 9mm to 200mm, and finishes are available, including natural and grip surfaces. The aim is to provide a pleasant tactile sensation while meeting a range of technical requirements. A version of the beige, tobacco and taupe grey tiles in 600×600×20mm and 600×1,200×20mm is specially designed for the outdoors, with an anti-slip surface. These tiles can either be laid directly on turf, gravel or sand, or glued on screed or raised supports to allow for the installation of electrical and plumbing systems. Porcelain stoneware is a compact, hard and non-porous ceramic material made from finely ground clays, quartz and other minerals that are fired at high temperatures. Resistant to water and scratches, this durable material is particularly well suited to flooring and wall cladding. In additional to the solid colours, the Terrae collection comprises more decorative tiles with elegant ribbed, gridded and other geometric patterns that make use of several colours in the collection’s earthen palette. These tiles help create attractive visual and tactile effects, with unique colour contrasts that add character and a touch of sophistication to both indoor and outdoor spaces. Suitable for the most challenging design applications, the tiles will maintain their aesthetic and functional characteristics intact over time. The silver-based treatment Bios Antibacterial applied to the tiles guarantees continual protection against micro-organisms, while the tiles are easy to both lay and clean. The durability and outstanding technical performance offer designers an impressive range of creative options, allowing for customised uses in various types of projects, whether adaptive reuse or new builds, and including private homes, civic spaces and commercial interiors. Why Trust Us?Last week I was reading one of my favorite design newsletters, Cathy and Garrett of The Grit And Polish, a pair of old-home renovators in Washington state. Cathy was sharing about shopping for window treatments, specifically the designer-beloved Chik blinds, for a rental renovation project. When the estimated price for the blinds didn’t come in at budget, instead of giving up, Cathy employed what she’s coined, “The 90% Rule.” I’ll let her explain:“Garrett and I have found that getting from 90% to 100%, design-wise, can be very expensive,” says Cathy. “And more often than not, we’re just as satisfied with the lower cost option.”Cathy ended up sourcing bamboo rollup blinds that, while not an exact match to the Chik blinds, are close enough to get the desired look without significantly breaking the budget. Cathy admits that, like all of us, she occasionally splurges, but “most of the time 90% feels like the right compromise between good design and reasonable budget.” Armed with a new catch phrase, I spent the weekend thinking of all the times I’m thankful to have settled on a “pretty good is good enough” way of thinking.In the Living RoomEllen GodfreyThe living room of my 1914 Craftsman is bright and cheerful with coffered ceilings and an original coal-burning fireplace with an inky green tile surround. I knew I wanted to do something to highlight the green tile, so when my friend and designer, Ellen Godfrey introduced me to Trustworth’s “Hydrangea” wallpaper it was love at first sight. It’s a whimsical, floral pattern that has similar green tones to my tile paired with muted yellows and dusty pinks. But without the budget to afford a full-room wallpaper install, I opted to apply the 90% rule and only wallpaper the fireplace bump out instead. I saved thousands of dollars on both the wallpaper and the installation fees, and, thanks to the room being mostly windows and door, I got 90% of the way to the look I was after. For 55 years, Range Rover has set the standard for luxury SUVs, with outstanding off-road capability and cutting-edge technological advancements. The iconic brand launched its first installation in Milan, Futurespective: Connected World, designed in collaboration with design studio NUOVA. Two seemingly opposite worlds collide – a 1970s showroom, complete with wood paneling, shag carpet, and a khaki Range Rover, leads into a hypermodern white space, with the 2025 Range Rover at the center of the installation. Here, these worlds work in harmony – bridging the gap between 1970 and 2025, the “futurespective” sets the scene for the next generation of Range Rovers, the distinct quality of immersion taking us simultaneously to the past and future. Stepping into a walnut-paneled ’70s paradise, full-length mirrors, distinctive clocks and hardware make this truly an immersive experience. So different from the open air and clever anchoring of the car in space, the 1970 Classic Range Rover is outfitted in a signature Olive Green color, warm and solid, reflecting similar color palettes of the time. Here, a deep burgundy shag offsets the green of the Rover and the dappled brown hues of the walnut, a bold and distinctly groovy interior that includes heartwarming details – a brochure that looks like it’s 50 years old, decade-specific lighting on the ceiling and side tables – that offers a distinct respect to the time, while also contrasting so elegantly with its new cousin. To outfit the space, NUOVA designed custom furniture, like the oxblood red seating, a circular version of their Enzo table with a white Carrara marble top, and bespoke desk chairs. 1970s details round out the room, including 44 custom beam ceiling lights, a chrome table lamp, a fish tank, and original sketches. NUOVA also collaborated with LA-based luxury atelier L’Equip to design outfits for the “time travel” concierge who guided guests through the two capsules in gear inspired by 1970s work attire and British fashion. “Range Rover has long been a companion to generations, seamlessly evolving through time while remaining anchored in its unmistakable identity. Our exploration of time travel isn’t merely nostalgic or speculative – it’s a lens through which we examine how design, innovation, and craftsmanship weave together across eras. Partnering with a brand so deeply rooted in heritage, yet constantly driven by evolution and reinvention, feels like a natural alignment,” says NUOVA founders Enrico Pietra and Rodrigo Caula. Leaving 1970 behind, the carpet is a first signifier of our immersion in the here and now, a wall-to-wall swan gray that speaks to space travel, aviation, and the great beyond. Mirrors stand in as columns, surrounding the 2025 Range Rover in a Bespoke metallic green finish. As the viewer traverses around the car, the mirrors pick up flitting images, coming in and out of focus thanks to strategic angling. Highlighting different facets of the car, the mirrors also showcase the soft gray of the walls with a bright light coming from the ceiling, almost mimicking a huge sunroof on a slightly overcast day illuminating the silhouette of the car. Launched in the 1970s in the United Kingdom and Australia, the Range Rover has been an iconic part of American culture as well, gray market sales prompting the brand to expand to the United States officially in 1987. The fifth-generation 2025 Range Rover has all the rugged capability of it’s original counterpart, with top of the line handling and sleek accents more appropriate for a modern age. First built in the 1500s, Osaka Castle has been destroyed, rebuilt and repaired over the years. In the early 1900s one of the wooden columns supporting the castle's main gate, known as the Otemon Gate, rotted out at the bottom. Craftsmen patched this in 1923 with this peculiar splice:I know the photo quality is poor. Here's a better photo of an identical splice joint executed by craftsman Chris Hall:Image and work: Chris Hall Following World War II, this splicing technique had been lost. Japanese craftsmen in the latter part of the 20th century had no idea how this splice was installed.In 1983, the joint was X-rayed. The joint was reverse-engineered, and Japanese craftsmen (and eventually Western craftsmen like Chris Hall*) learned to make it again.Here's how the mysterious joint goes together. I've cued this up to the right spot:The joint is referred to both by its technical name, basara-tsugi, and colloquially as the "Otemon splice."It's one thing to see how it goes together; it's another to make the joint on-site. Imagine trying to chisel that thing out, upside-down, on the rotted column while it's in place. I imagine installation on-site is similarly fiendish; if you cannot jack the entire structure up, you'd need to remove foundation stones (in Japanese timber framing, the posts often rest on stacked stone pilings dug into the ground) to have the space to wedge the replacement part in.----*Chris Hall was a highly skilled craftsman who shared his knowledge on his website, The Carpentry Way, until his passing in 2020.
